Calypso 200.13ft /61m Custom motor yacht lands in Seattle in early June there usual – back again cruising the amazing Pacific Northwest. Calypso landed in Elliott Bay Marina for a short lay-up then she rounded the corner northbound to Shilshole Bay then by entering the Ballard Locks for a lift from the vast and massive Puget Sound to lift her way into the WA Ship Canal. At 61m the Calypso is a big girl while passing 25 ft. run about day boats in the canal. Next up on this early June sunny afternoon, Calypso go a Ballard Bridge lift where it’s always part of the Seattle marine traffic fun to see Alaska crab boats, seiners, draggers and processors get passed by superyachts back for annual Northwest dockage come early summer.

Calypso at 301.13ft was built with Steel hull and Aluminium superstructure. Custom motor yacht Calypso is built to comply to MCA and Lloyds Register standards. Her cruising speed is 14 knots, a maximum speed of 15 knots and a range of 4,000nm from her 168,000 litre fuel tanks, she is the perfect combination of performance and luxury for full-time crew, owners and guests at the dock and underway.

Invasive species detected at aquarium wholesaler, alert issued in WA

RENTON, Wash. - Wildlife officials are asking pet stores in Washington and Idaho to be cautious after a highly invasive species was discovered hitching a ride on a popular aquarium item in Renton earlier this month. 

According to the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), on Aug. 5, a local wholesale aquarium company in Renton notified wildlife officials after finding zebra mussels on a shipment of Marimo moss balls.

Within minutes, a WDFW Aquatic Invasive Species team arrived, collected the moss balls in question, and was able to positively identify multiple adult zebra mussels.

In addition to pet stores, the WDFW is asking anyone who may have purchased Marimo moss balls for their aquariums to be on the lookout and report any sightings immediately. 

"We all have a role to play in preventing and stopping invasive species, and the most basic action is to be aware and report anything that could be a problem and looks out of place. If you see something, say something, because you could find the first hitchhiker and prevent millions, if not billions, of impacts to the economy and environment," said Justin Bush, aquatic invasive species policy coordinator.

What are zebra mussels, and why are they invasive?

Zebra mussels are highly invasive mollusks that are native to waters in Eastern Europe and western Russia. They are invasive because they threaten native fish and wildlife the moment they are introduced to a new body of water. They have an extremely high reproductive rate. One individual female is capable of releasing up to one million eggs per year. Zebra mussels also cost taxpayers millions of dollars because they rapidly clog pipes and other intakes.

Zebra mussels were first detected on Marimo moss balls in retail pet stores in Seattle, Washington back in 2021. This quickly turned into an international response after zebra mussel-contaminated moss balls were detected in 41 other states and nine Canadian provinces.

Should I be worried about zebra mussels in Washington?

According to the WDFW, if zebra mussels become established and take hold in Washington, officials estimate it would cost more than $100 million each year to keep the state’s power and water facilities operational. That is in addition to the catastrophic damage zebra mussels can pose to native species and the environment.

"If you think your aquarium may be carrying invasive mussels, use the online reporting options including the Washington Invasives app or online reporting form ," said Bush. "It is as easy as taking a photo and submitting for an expert to review."

Mike Lynch’s Sunken Superyacht Is Largely Intact, Italian Officials Say

I talian investigators searching the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht said it appeared largely intact, a discovery that contradicts earlier eyewitnesses who said its mast had snapped when it sank in Monday’s storm.

Divers are reporting that the 180-foot-long yacht was lying on its side on the ocean floor, an Italian coast guard official said Wednesday. “The divers are looking for structural damage on the hull,” the official said.

The early reports from Italian officials appeared to be at odds with witnesses who had said the aluminum mast snapped during a violent thunderstorm when the vessel sank off the coast of Sicily with 22 people on board, including owner Mike Lynch, a U.K. tech billionaire.

The towering mast on the Bayesian stretched nearly 240 feet into the sky—making the superyacht the tallest luxury sailboat when it was built.

Maritime experts said a broken mast of that height could cause serious damage to a vessel, but the design isn’t a safety concern as long as the masts are well maintained and held tightly upright on the hull by cables called stays.

“Bigger masts support bigger sails and higher sailing speeds,” said Takis Tsakos, a veteran captain who also oversees for clients the construction of superyachts such as the Bayesian at yards in Europe and the U.S. “The yacht fans love the bigger masts because they look marvelous and give the vessel more volume. They are especially impressive at night when they are lit up.”

The Bayesian’s mast could have fallen on the hull, damaging it, or could have been uprooted from its base by the strong winds if the stays weren’t tight enough. Yacht captains say loose stays can make a boat tilt as much as 15 degrees even with the sails folded.

“That would have made a gaping hole and water could have rushed in. It was also a relaxed evening—doors and windows could have been open with more water coming in as the boat tilted,” said Tsakos, founder of Athens-based Yachtways GP, which rents out luxury yachts in the Mediterranean. “These will be determined when the yacht is pulled out of the water.”

The people missing and presumed dead in the sinking of the Bayesian include Lynch, his daughter, a top executive at Morgan Stanley and one of Lynch’s lawyers. The group was celebrating Lynch’s acquittal on U.S. fraud charges.

Italian authorities are continuing to investigate the accident and divers are trying to access the sunken hull. Rescue teams located five bodies from the wreck on Wednesday. The body of the boat’s chef was retrieved from the sea on Tuesday.

Masts must meet the safety standards of classification societies that give the green light for a ship to sail and monitor its maintenance over the years. Oversize masts on superyachts are turned by computer so they face the wind straight on and not sideways even when the sails are folded.

“For a vessel of this size to go down, there must have been tremendous ingress of water inside its enclosed spaces,” said Fotis Pagoulatos, a naval architect who has participated in a number of shipwreck investigations. “Its design allows it to stay afloat, even with two compartments flooded.” He said he wouldn’t be surprised if the yacht’s hull is found cracked and buckled from the forces exerted by the freak weather and possibly the cracked mast.

The single-masted Bayesian was built by Italian company Perini Navi and delivered in 2008 to its original owner. The boat, which was taller than it was long, was one of a class of supersize luxury yachts that cruise the Mediterranean and other hot spots.

Formerly known as Salute, it was one of several that Perini Navi built that was 56 meters long. But its sister ships had shorter masts—generally extending 59 meters, compared with about 72 meters for the Bayesian. Perini Navi didn’t return requests for comment.

The Bayesian has been eclipsed by newer boats owned by other billionaires. Jeff Bezos, the Amazon.com founder, commissioned the 127-meter-tall Koru, a three-masted vessel that was delivered in 2023.

The Koru was so tall that in 2022 it sparked a protest over plans to dismantle a bridge to let it sail out of the Dutch port where it was built. Instead, the ship was towed to another shipyard to have its masts mounted.

Still, the Bayesian remained one of the largest private sailing yachts. It was ordered by a Dutch businessman but, in 2005, he was paralyzed in a yachting accident and it was sold on completion to another Dutch owner and renamed Salute, according to yacht brokers.

In 2014, it was sold to an entity owned by Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, and renamed Bayesian. It has no racing history, but boats of this size compete in events such as the St Barths Bucket Regatta, an annual race in the Caribbean, and in the Perini Navi Cup, a four-day race near Sardinia.

Perini Navi is known for creating some of the world’s most famous and luxurious sailing yachts, including the 88-meter-long Maltese Falcon, one of the world’s most recognizable sailing yachts, with rotating masts and a futuristic design.

The masts of the Maltese Falcon are 57 meters tall.

A seventh body is recovered from sunken superyacht off Sicily, believed to be Mike Lynch’s daughter

ROME (AP) — Italian rescuers on Friday brought ashore the last of seven bodies from a superyacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily, the Coast Guard said. It is believed to be that of the daughter of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who also perished when the boat sank earlier this week.

Hannah Lynch, 18, was the last person unaccounted for aboard The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht that went down in a storm early Monday.

Mike Lynch’s body was recovered Thursday. He had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial in the United States. His wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 survivors.

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends. Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy,” a spokesperson for the family said in a statement issued Friday.

Rescuers struggled for four days to find all the missing bodies, making only slow headway through the interior of the wreck lying on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) below the surface.

Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

The other five victims are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy; and Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators said it will hold a news conference on Saturday to unveil the first findings of its criminal investigation, which was opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The main question investigators are focusing on is how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

'She had a fire in her': 80-year-old grandmother killed while defending dogs in Seattle carjacking

An 80-year-old grandmother in Washington state died during a carjacking this week as she struggled to protect dogs, and a 48-year-old suspect is in custody for what police are calling a senseless killing.

The Seattle Police Department identified the victim as Ruth Dalton, a local dog walker. One dog in the car with her at the time belonged to Dalton and was later found fatally stabbed, police Deputy Chief Eric Barden said during a press conference Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested later that night by a SWAT team, Barden said, and when captured, he was carrying a bloody knife and the keys to Dalton’s Subaru.

“This is a tragic and horrific incident,” Barden said. “(Dalton was) participating vibrantly in her community... that was snatched from her and from her family and her friends and the community by virtue of this senseless violence.”

Police identified the homicide suspect to USA TODAY as Jahmed K. Haynes, of Seattle.

A motive in the killings was not immediately known, but police told USA TODAY Haynes has eight prior criminal convictions including a vehicular homicide in 1993, and Barden said the suspect has a history of mental health issues.

Just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a carjacking in the city's Madison Valley neighborhood, about three miles east of downtown.

Arriving officers, Barden said, found bystanders performing aide to Dalton in the road. 

Seattle firefighters responded and attempted to save Dalton, but she died at the scene. 

'She had a fire in her'

Dalton's granddaughter, Melanie Roberts, remembered her grandmother as a kind, loving, and generous soul.

"But she had a fire in her! She defended those she loved fiercely," Roberts told USA TODAY Thursday. "I have no doubt in my mind that she fought that man to save those fur babies. She wouldn't have cared about the car... her only thought would have been her clients' babies."

Roberts, 40, of Lake Stevens in Snohomish County, about an hour drive north of Seattle, said her grandmother started her business, Grandma's Critter Care, when she was five.

"(It was) to pay for private Christian school," Roberts, said. "That was her only goal. But she fell in love with the job and the people and was in business for 35 years. The love she had for every one of those animals and their humans was amazing."

Fingerprints on Dalton's cell phone led police to suspect

A preliminary investigation revealed Dalton was in the driver’s seat when the suspect jumped into her car.

Dalton fought back, police said, as the man tried to push her out.

Six dogs were in the car, one that belonged to Dalton and five others, including two dogs named Cowboy and Mister owned by Allison Enell.

Also in the car, Enell said: a terrier named Stewie, a King Charles Cavalier named Maisie who was injured and taken to a vet for emergency surgery, a Corgi named Bentley, and Dalton's dog, Prince Eric, who was killed.

Witnesses tried to help the woman, including one man who approached the car, but backed up when the suspect brandished a knife, Barden said. The same man returned with a bat, police said, but the suspect drove away, running over Dalton and striking several cars.

Dalton was dragged by the vehicle and fatally wounded.

“He did not need to back up,” witness Laura Dynan told The Seattle Times . “This woman was fighting for other people’s dogs and her own dog in this car. Like it wasn’t about the car. It was about the dogs.”

Not far from the scene, officers found Dalton’s car and obtained fingerprints from her cellphone, Barden said.

'She's a hero'

The five surviving dogs were found within a mile of the site by good Samaritans, Enell said, "scared and skittish, but all OK outside of Maisie."

"Ruth saved our dogs," Enell told USA TODAY. "She did it at the cost of her own life. I have no doubt the perpetrator would have murdered our dogs had she not fought to get the door open. She could have handed over the car and stepped back, but she fought and fought. She’s a hero. We are gutted."

Later in the day witnesses reported someone hurting a dog in Brighton Playfield in the Columbia City neighborhood, about 5 miles from the carjacking scene, Barden said.

When animal control officers responded to the scene, Barden said, they found a dog stabbed to death and noticed the dog's collar had a tag with Dalton’s name on it.

Man accused of killing dog walker, dog, faces first-degree murder, animal cruelty charges

King County online jail records show Haynes was booked into the jail just before 8 p.m. Wednesday and faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree animal cruelty.

As of Thursday he remained jailed with no bond, a jail spokesperson reported.

It was not immediately known when he was due to appear in court or whether he had obtained an attorney.
