Private yacht charter for the british virgin islands.
Recent BVI Yacht Charter Trends
The British Virgin Islands are considered one of the best-crewed catamaran destinations in the world. The catamarans operating in the area have evolved significantly and are now a popular sailing option in the virgin islands. With their larger size, superior stability, and luxurious amenities, guests can enjoy more space and comfort while on the BVI yacht charters.
This is because catamarans operating in the British Virgin Islands, far from being the second-best sailing choice of the distant past, are getting bigger and more luxurious , affording a pleasant, relaxed journey on the gentle trade winds of the archipelago. A fully crewed catamaran is a comfortable alternative to motor yachts, especially above the 60ft+ range .
Furthermore, while the British Virgin Islands have traditionally been known as sailing destinations, there has been a growing demand for motor yachts among luxury yacht charter guests. As the marinas compete to accommodate more and larger vessels, their numbers increase There are now over 200 large (over 100 feet meters) motor BVI yacht charters operating in the area in the high season. The motor yachts offer more privacy and prestige , more water toys , and comfort as they are able to accommodate a larger number of guests (and crew). Note that jetskis are not allowed in the BVI yacht charters (yes for USVI – except for national parks).
From covid to work permits and business licences.
With the health crisis is almost at an end , Covid regulations in the British Virgin Islands have changed. They have not disappeared, but transferred into a bureaucracy war of work permit and trade licences.
What that means is that your charter starting in USVI might not go to the BVI because the paperwork did not make it through. How can you be sure that your selected yacht has the necessary paperwork to go? That depends on your dates. Consult your preferences with us and we’ll be very direct about where your selected yacht is in terms of feasibility of a BVI charter. Note that the rules are subject to, often very unexpected, changes.
BVI charter guests on vacation are no longer required to register for entry clearance or show proof of travel insurance, regardless of their vaccination status. Also, there is no longer the need to present a COVID-19 test result upon arrival in the British Virgin Islands.
Keep in mind
Selecting a private yacht charter broker.
When it’s time to charter a yacht for your trip to the British Virgin Islands, it’s important to choose a broker with a local presence on the ground, and one that has the most experience in the market.
DMA Yachting has a permanent presence in the British Virgin Islands, which gives us the knowledge and experience of boats, the local fleet, crews, and the little local secrets that give an edge towards achieving the perfect luxury yacht charter vacation.
If you’re looking to charter a yacht in the BVI, you’ll want to start your search at least six months out. The main charter season in the BVI spans from December to March, with a peak around Christmas/New Year. Notice the interesting months of April and November, which offer reasonable deals in the British Virgin Islands.
By the beginning of summer, the best choices for peak dates are booked. It’s not unseen to have clients inquire 2 years ahead – the value for money First minute vs. Last minute is unbelievable. There still are “deals” on last minute charters that rarely have to do with last minute cancellations.
Our favorite spots
A beautiful island in the British Virgin Islands, Jost Van Dyke is a must-see for yacht charters looking to experience some of the best scuba diving in the world. The waters around the Jost Van Dyke land are flourishing with marine life- creating an incredible opportunity for snorkeling and other water sports.
Even though it is one of the smallest leeward islands in the BVI , the yacht charters will be treated to spectacular scenery and authentic experiences in Jost Van Dyke. Don’t miss a visit to the Great Harbour Bars of Foxy’s and Ivan’s for a drink, the peaceful energy of Diamond Cay, and the crashing waves of Bubbly Pool.
Connect yourself with the local culture at White Bay – a magical place of positive energy in BVI yacht charters. Swim from your boat to the famous Soggy Dollar bar for a painkiller. Hang out in the hammock in Hendo’s Hideout, get a roti or seafood, and relax on the beach. Weekends are more party-like, with day trips from USVI filling the beach bars.

Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the British Virgin Islands, with just over 4,000 people. It’s known for its beautiful white sands, the rock pools known as The Baths, and world-class luxury resorts and clubs for BVI yacht charters. There are also some great hiking trails on Virgin Gorda with sweeping views of the island’s coastline-making it an ideal destination for visitors with bareboat catamarans .
After soaking up the sunshine and saltwater activities in Virgin Gorda, consider visiting the Copper Mine National Park. These 19th-century abandoned ruins are found between Copper Mine Bay and Crooks Bay on the island’s southeastern point. The structures were built by Cornish miners and housed around 130 families before the mine was closed in 1862.
This tiny island is arguably one of the most pristine places in the world, and it makes sense why it has become synonymous with white sand beaches. Loblolly Beach, Bay Beach, and Cow Wreck Beach are not to be missed in BVI yacht charters.
Anegada sea is also home to the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean. You’ll find turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, and even manta rays!
The island has a modest road network, little traffic, and is best discovered on a boat. However, those that choose to explore on land will find easy hiking trails that offer a unique view of the topography.

If you’re looking for a getaway as close to paradise as possible, look no further than Necker Island for your British Virgin Islands Yacht Charter.
Necker Island is one of the world’s most exclusive and expensive destinations. Owned by Sir Richard Branson since 1978, it has been used as a private island for selective guests and celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and David Bowie. And if you’re wondering whether you can enjoy some of this luxury, the answer is yes.
Guests can enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving in the clear waters surrounding the island or relax on one of the turquoise-colored beaches during the Yacht Charter BVI.

Norman island is another privately owned island, this 600 acres paradise on earth provides sandy coves and an extensive network of caves waiting to be explored. This island is a premium snorkeling destination for all water enthusiasts and BVI yacht charters.
The history of Norman Island is tied to pirates and a hiding spot for pirates’ booty. Some say that Treasure Island, the famed novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, is based on the history of Norman Island.
The island has several bays and dive sites worth getting acquainted with, including Benures Bay and The Bight. You can also partake in an evening of drinking at the legendary floating bar of Willy T.
Tortola is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands. It’s home to some of the best diving and snorkelling in the Caribbean- especially in Cane garden bay . Tortola Island also has many historical sites and points of interest. Don’t miss a visit to Smuggler’s Cove, a perfect shallow reef ideal for scuba beginners and untouched by civilization.
To taste Caribbean living from your BVI charter vacation, venture into Torrola’s Road Town. The freedom of your own private yacht lets you explore the colorful streets and enjoy laid-back evenings tasting rum-infused cocktails from the beach bars. A visit to the Callwood Rum Distillery is a must, as is a stroll around the Craft’s Alive Village for souvenir shopping.

Choosing the right yacht for your trip can make a world of difference, and there are five key factors you’ll need to consider to ensure you’re selecting the perfect vessel for your British Virgin Islands vacation.
You’re probably wondering when’s the best time to set sail in the British Virgin Islands, and it’s crucial to know that the ideal sailing conditions often occur between December and April. During these months, you’ll experience steady trade winds, calm seas, and warm temperatures ranging from 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, don’t dismiss the rest of the year. May to November can also offer good sailing, with slightly higher temperatures and a bit more rain. It’s less crowded, so you’ll enjoy more privacy and potentially better deals on yacht charters.
But be wary of the Atlantic hurricane season , running from June to November. Although hurricanes aren’t a daily occurrence, they can disrupt plans. So, if you’re risk-averse, stick to the December-April window.
Remember, it’s not just about the weather. Consider what you want from your trip. If you’re seeking vibrant nightlife and events, time your visit with the annual BVI Spring Regatta in March or the Full Moon parties at Bomba’s Shack.
Armed with knowledge about the best times to visit, let’s now delve into some crucial travel tips for the British Virgin Islands, ensuring you’re well prepared for your yacht charter adventure.
Respect local customs and traditions. Islanders appreciate it when visitors take the time to understand their way of life.
Finally, remember that you’re in the tropics, so stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun.
Now, you’re a step closer to a smooth sailing experience in the British Virgin Islands. Take these tips to heart, and you’ll be on your way to an unforgettable yachting adventure.
With your bags packed and tips in hand, it’s time for you to set sail and explore the top destinations in the British Virgin Islands, where pristine beaches and vibrant marine life await. Your first stop should be Tortola, the largest island. Here, you’ll find Road Town, a harbor city brimming with Caribbean culture. Don’t forget to visit the Callwood Rum Distillery to get a taste of local flavors.
Next, head over to Virgin Gorda, renowned for The Baths, a geological wonder consisting of massive granite boulders. Here, you can swim in the unique tidal pools or explore the hidden caves. The island is also home to Gorda Peak National Park, a tropical forest with panoramic views.
Your adventure doesn’t stop there. Sail over to Anegada, the only coral island in the island group. It’s a paradise for snorkelers and divers with its vibrant coral reefs. Also, don’t miss the famous Flamingo Pond.
Before you immerse yourself in the rich Caribbean culture of the British Virgin Islands, it’s crucial that you become familiar with some of the local customs and etiquette to ensure you’re respectful of the islanders’ traditions and way of life.
Firstly, greetings are important here. It’s customary to say ‘good morning’, ‘good afternoon’, or ‘good night’ before starting a conversation. Don’t forget to maintain a friendly demeanor and eye contact. Island time is a real thing in the BVI – locals tend to operate at a relaxed pace, so patience is key.
Dressing appropriately is another aspect to be mindful of. While beachwear is acceptable on the sand, it’s seen as disrespectful to wear skimpy outfits in public places or religious sites.
Food and drink are at the heart of BVI culture. If invited to a local’s home, it’s polite to bring a gift. When dining out, tipping is customary, usually around 15% of the bill.
Lastly, the BVI is environmentally conscious, so ensure you respect their commitment to preserve their beautiful islands. Follow these customs and you’ll not only have an enjoyable visit but also earn the respect of the friendly islanders.
You can’t visit the British Virgin Islands without indulging in the local cuisine, and there’s a wealth of dishes you’ll want to try. Known for its rich, hearty flavors, BVI cuisine reflects its culturally diverse history with a unique blend of African, European, and Indian influences.
Begin your gastronomic journey with a hearty bowl of fish and fungi, a local staple. The ‘fungi’ is a cornmeal dish somewhat like American grits, served with a delectable fish stew. For something lighter, try the conch fritters. These delicious deep-fried snacks are made from conch, a type of shellfish renowned for its tender texture and sweet taste.
Of course, you can’t leave without tasting the national dish, Anegada lobster. Freshly caught and grilled to perfection, its succulent meat is a must-try for seafood lovers. Finally, wash it all down with a glass of the famous Painkiller cocktail. This tropical mix of rum, coconut cream, orange and pineapple juice, topped with a sprinkle of nutmeg, is the perfect way to end a meal.
So, there you have it – a comprehensive guide to your dream yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands. From selecting your perfect yacht to savoring local cuisine and respecting island customs, you’re now prepared for an unforgettable voyage. Remember, safety first and fully embrace the local culture. Your adventure is waiting. Now, it’s time to turn this dream into reality. Happy sailing!

The best time for a BVI Yacht Charter is between December and April, which is the high season for tourism. During this time, the weather is sunny and dry, and the temperatures range from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit.
The peak of the high season is between Christmas and New Year’s when many visitors flock to the BVI to enjoy the festive season in paradise. This also means that prices for charters and flights are generally higher during this time.
If you’re looking to avoid the crowds and save some money, you can consider visiting the BVI during the shoulder season, November / Early December and April to July. This is the low season for tourism, and the weather is still warm and tropical. However, you should be aware that this is closer to hurricane season, so it’s essential to obtain trip insurance should something happen.

Anegada is the only inhabited British Virgin Island formed from coral and limestone. Sailing to it, you’d think you were sailing out into endless seas, but after some time, the tiny tips of the trees come into vision!
The North Sound, also known as the Billionaires playground. This amazing anchorage provides a calm harbor even in windy conditions. You have access to many popular stops such as Saba Rock, Bitter End, Oil Nut Bay, and Leverick Bay. The North Sound is also an amazing jump point to Anegada, which is often a unforgetable beam-reach sail.
Nestled between giant granite boulders and palms in the sandy bay of Spanish Town, is the chic restaurant, Coco Maya . Minutes from the iconic “Baths” of Virgin Gorda, the inviting lounge ambiance is perfect for relaxing at sunset. Coco Maya serves up an undeniably delectable fusion of Southeast Asian street food & Latin American cuisine with a touch of Caribbean flavor, and I couldn’t possibly be a bigger fan.

The dog islands are a mecca for scuba and free divers. The uninhabited islands offer some of the best, and often overlooked live coral patches.
The Baths are just one of those places that make you go… “how did this get here?”. They were made by granite that eroded into piles of boulders on the beach, creating natural tidal pools, tunnels, arches, and scenic grottos that are open to the sea.
Cooper is one of those charming spots you don’t want to miss when traveling around the BVI. It’s a tiny island with an incredible beachfront restaurant, its own rum bar, gourmet coffee shop, solar-powered brewery, and gift shop.
Scrub Island is a great place to spend a night or two prior to your yacht charter. It also has an incredible Spa, Restaurant, and snorkeling just in the vicinity. Scrub island also allows you to purchase a “day pass” should you wish to access their amenities such as their pool and hot tubs for the day.

Whether sipping cocktails on deck or taking a jump into the ocean, the Willy T offers a unique slice of BVI paradise.
Situated on the leeward side of Salt Island, this historic and exciting dive location is the crown jewel of scuba diving in the Virgin Islands. The bow rests shallow at 20ft and the stern at 100ft. The ship sank during a hurricane in 1867.
With its shallow shoals & secret caverns, the Indians are home to the brightest corals and provides incredible biodiversity aka “The Fishbowl”.

Much less traffic and endless empty anchorages whisper a siren song for the guests wanting solitude.
The island of Jost Van Dyke is home to this truly World Famous quintessential beach bar. Paddle up, swim in, or have the dinghy take you to your new favorite place. Ask Leon the bartender for a legendary Painkiller cocktail .
Only a 10 minute hike/walk from the Soggy Dollar Bar, the bubbly pools get their name from the waves coming over the ledge into the tidal swimming pool stirring it up. You’re likely to pass lots of wildlife, hear happy goats, and (if you’re lucky) try some delicious Prickly Pear Fruit along the way.
Located on the north coast of Tortola, Cane Garden Bay is known for its majestic sunsets, friendly locals, and live reggae music.
