Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

I recently bought a Magnifik Midget (pic here: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZsPncLrH6Co/UFXkB_3LdRI/AAAAAAAAVig/lobrKliGP1s/s577/P9161076.JPG ) and was pleasantly suprised to find it is sail number 2. I spent a little time researching the web to find out a little about these boats. Here is some history I learned from Jonas Pettersson ( http://magnifik.sjuntorp.com/): The first 8.5 meter Magnifik was built of wood in 1965 by designer Bruno Boström for coastal cruising and racing. It is said to have won many races. In 1966, production began in the UK on the "Midget" 7 meter plastic or GRP hulls adapted from the original. Some sources indicate that UK moulds were produced by Tyler. Cresent Monarch of Varberg, Sweden and a builder in Holsterbrobruk, Denmark manufactured the same hull in Scandinavia. From 1972 to 1977, Runnbåtar (Dalarna, Sweden) & Johnsson (Partille, Sweden) continued production until economic consierations moved manufacturing to Styrsö, Sweden. Boats could be purchased in varying states of completion from bare hull to fully fitted but the majority were completed by inividuals who constructed the interior furnishings after purchase. This accounted for the varying quality of construction seen in boats surviving today. Many originals included an inboard, 6hp, Färe Göta motor. It is thought that a total of 640 Magnifik Migets were constructed between 1966 and 1981 when production appears to have ceased. Here are the yachts technical specifications (from http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=6985 ) Hull Type: Fin Keel LOA: 22.97' / 7.00m LWL: 18.86' / 5.75m Beam: 6.96' / 2.12m Draft: 3.22' / 0.98m Displacement: 3058lb / 1387kg Ballast: 1499lb / 680kg Listed SA: 215ft² / 19.97m² Sail area displacement: 16.37 Ballast displacement: 49.03% Displacement length: 203.50 Designer: Bruno Boström Builder: Johnson Batar AB (SWE) Hull Material: Glass reinforced plastic (GRP) First Built: 1966 Last Built: 1981 Quantity Built: 640 Rig Dimensions Rig Type: Masthead Sloop I: 25.59' / 7.80m J: 8.40' / 2.56m P: 21.33' / 6.50m E: 8.37' / 2.55m Sail area (foresail): 107.48ft² / 9.98m² Sail area (mainsail): 89.27 ft² / 8.29 m² Total (calculated) sail area: 196.74 ft² / 18.28 m² DL ratio: 203.50 Sail area displacement: 14.98 Estimated forestay length: 26.93' / 8.21m There are a couple Swedish and Polish blogs detailing refits and other adventures with Magnifik Midgets: - http://magnifikmidget.blogspot.com/ - http://magnifik.sjuntorp.com/ - http://hem.passagen.se/hoss/magnifik.htm - http://www.angelfire.com/mb2/sail0/ - http://magnifiksven.blogspot.com/ There is a Swedish Magnifik Midget forum at: http://www.webvoter.net/se/community/forumthreads.php?community_id=2714&forum_id=6475 . There are several dozen posts about the various jobs and parts specific to the MM. There are some beautiful examples for sale here: http://www.allaannonser.se/magnifik-midget.html

I tried to find information on the internet about the Magnifik Midget before my purchase of MM 378. But I did not find the answeres on my questions. It was then I decided to do this website.

The site shows the renovation of my boat and is updated as soon as some new happens with the boat.

Navigate around on the site and do not forget to type in the guest book. There is always funny to see when you have been in on the site.

If you have any questions? Wright them in the forum, and I or someone else would try to respond to them.

Mail me if you have any point of views or ideas on the site.

If you have been on the side earlier, you might need to press “updates” in order to see new things.

If you have a picture on your boat, please e-mail me, and I will put it in the list: . Do not forget to type the boat number.

History about Magnifiken

It all begun 1965 when the yachtconstructor Bruno E.R Boström had drawn an oneoffbåt that was named Magnifik. It was built in wood and was approximately 8,5 metres. 23,5 kvm Coastcruiser. Bruno drew the boat to his little brother Per Olof, and he won many oceanraces with that boat. Then Bruno got the idea to build a plastic variant off the boat. This was done smaler than the original, thereof the name midget.

The production started 1966 in England.  Cresent Monarch in Varberg took over the moulds after that. Moulds has also been in Holsterbrobruk in Denmark. There is information that says that moulds also was in Norway and Finland.

Runnbåtar AB in Dalarna bought up several of these moulds, and 1972 Johnsson boats bought up the moulds from them, and begun the production in a premise in centers of Partille outside Gothenburg. 8-10 Magnifik Midget was built there each month by self-building. The interest for this kind of building took up and shut down in Partille 1977. The shipyard  then moved to Styrsö. Johnson boats once had a register over the produced boats, but it was destroyed in a fire.

You could buy the boat either completed from the shipyard, then most often them came with on board motors, Färe Göta 6 hk. Or they came as semi make. Then, you hade to build the furnishings alone, thereof varying kvalite. Then you bought a packet solution. You  got the moulds vaxed and the gelcoat completed painted, a pair of cans with polyester and fiberglass carpets. Shipyard workers and tools was around to use. 1975 was the price for this packet approximately 27000 sek, no furnishing included.

The last boats were built around 1980-81. Totaly there has been produced approximately 640 boats. Big sister to the Magnifik Midget is a Markant 30. It is 9,18 long and Bruno Boström drawn it in 1966, and started to be built 1968. However not in so many copies. Other ships Bruno have designed is Mix 31, Winga MS 31 that is a motorsaylor. Minette was built -68 to -77 in 125 copies, B 31 in 1000 copies, -73 to -78. Winga 30, -76 to 80, 260 copies. Boström 37, built in 300 copies with beginning -77. The ship that was built in most copies where B 31 Mark II that were produced between 78 and -82 in 3000 copies.

Review of Magnifik Midget

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The interior is like many other boats made of mahogany. Mahogany belongs to the hardwood species, known for being water-repellent and resistant to decay. It has an attractive wood grain and holds wood polish and varnish well. The boat is equipped with 4 berths, a galley and toilet facility.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Magnifik Midget is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.98 - 1.08 meter (3.22 - 3.52 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Magnifik Midget is typically equipped with an inboard Färe Göta engine at 6 hp (4 kW). Calculated max speed is about 4.5 knots

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Magnifik Midget is 1.91, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Magnifik Midget is about 81 kg/cm, alternatively 457 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 81 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 457 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 9m 2 (96 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Magnifik Midget 23 Foot - Fin Keel - Swedish Sailing Yacht Boat - Steeple Essex.

magnifik midget sailboat

Currently in the water at Steeple in Essex, she can be taken out and inspectedwhenever required, she has been in the water since August 2018 having been dried out for 10 months in a very hot summer! BIMBLE has been stored ashore on the hard almost every winter since 1994She was built in 1976 I am reliably informed by the previous ownerbut there are no papers to officially prove this. She was primed thoroughly in August 2018 and given a fresh coat of anti foul.No signs of osmosis were found anywhere, she is rock hard all over.Three new anodes have been fitted in 2015 Designed by Bruno Bostrom from Sweden, over 600 of these hulls were built.Details of this fast yacht can be found at http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp? Class_id=6985 YOUTUBE videos of a Magnifik Midget in action https://youtu.be/31pXImyT_oQ https://youtu.be/Gs2BkfHuGCk Bimble is on the Small Ships Register SSR since 2015 so she is eligible for sailing to foreign ports. In 2015 I sailed her over the North Sea to to the Frisian islands of Holland and Germany and onto Oslo in Norway and was met with some big dangerous seas, the seas in the Baltic were the worst but she behaved impeccably!

She is a safe yacht, she is a dream to sail. This yacht points exceedingly close to the wind! The beam is narrow and the hull shape almost identical to a Contessabut with a smaller fin keel. She sails well even in the lightest of winds! The bilge has always been kept dry as I have previously lived on this yacht full time since 2010 so she has been kept warm in all the winters since, so no damp or moisture has penetrated anywhere. I have drilled holes in all of the compartments and cupboards so that any water ingress from any part of the yacht funnels immediately to the main bilge in the keel. The keel area has a lot of space where storage for many large water containers that can be kept deep down in the boat, this helps the stability of the boat enormously and helps her to sit better in the water, when under sail.

She has been fitted out and insulated with wood veneers. There is plenty of excellent carpentry work in the yacht withlots and lots of storage compartments and shelving of all shapes and sizes, all the latches work it’s just that there is a lot of varnishing to do if you are so inclined? The cockpit has two teak grates to walk on. The port and starboard lights work, the bulb in the trilight requires changing at the top of the mast. Interior lights work but the yacht could do with a re wiring although this is not essential. There is a working deck light half way up the mastthat faces towards the bow. There is some old wiring that could be ripped out. All NEW standing rigging was fitted in 2008 and the helm stock was overhauled and bearings replaced in 2008.

She comes with a super reliable Mercury 5 horsepower outboard petrol engine that has been serviced after 10 hours of use and serviced after 125 hours, the second service completed in August 2018. The total number of hours now being 157.The outboard engine charges the main boat battery. The cost of the outboard engine was over £950.00 in 2015! It is fed by fuel contained in a separate red petrol plastic tank 12 litres approximately. The battery was recently purchased new in September (£120.00) is a big size 110 amp hours and still has a 2 year guarantee warranty.Current charge reading 13.8 volts!

The battery is fitted very very securely as I carried out the work myself! There is also a new 2016, 600 watt solid state inverter for converting electricity from the 12 volt battery to 240 volt standard. There is a solid state Garmin GPS that works, it will plot routes and give you your latitude and longitude amongst otherinformation. There is an Almanac from 2010 that I still find very useful. She comes with a very good Inflatable red BOMBARD Dinghy which is a good size for two people and has no leaks whatsoever! The Dinghy has manual self inflating pumps attached to itself so there is no need to carry any pumps!

Worth £150 all day long. She stands bolt upright on a drying mooring even in the softest of muds as she has a pair of lightweight aluminium legs that I have actually improved the upright stance by increasing the size of the footplates! I have made a new very solid and very very strong outboard bracket that has been well varnished 2015. I have made a new stronger varnished washboard hatch with a small window in 2015 that is a precise and exacting fit. Sails original mainsail still in good order, new wooden battens 2015 with no repairs!

Genoa - old fashioned brass hank on but in excellent condition! Bought secondhand on classifieds board in 2015 but it was never used beforehand !!! There is a Spinnaker sail in a sail bag! There is a sliding track on the forestay wire if a slide on sail is usedand there is a well oiled furling drum to roll up the Genoa! There is an excellent very well made rope ladder that can be hung overthe side of the yacht!

There is a bucket of various emergency flares. There is a small spare anchor and the main Danforth anchor has the main arm bentbut this has no effect on the holding power as the anchor always sets well .There is approximately 15 metres of anchor chain. There are some good quality nearly new warps.Small Red Ensign flag. Head (Toilet) worked but not been used since purchase in 2010. Standing room in the yacht is about 5 foot 5 inches. There are four berths with blue upholstered cushions.Old but clean! There is a galley area with a two burner gas stove connected to recently fitted new orange gas pipe that runs to the outside locker.

There is a small fitted 6 amp solar panel fitted on the foredeck that is not currently working but can be possibly repaired with new soldering ???? A well engineered designed stainless steel Stern pushpit has been fitted, it is not standard but is a very welcome contribution which adds enormously to the security and practicality of sailing a yacht. As with any yacht of this age there are many scrapes and chipsin the fibreglass.Beware! The photos do not show all the ugly bits that require painting! The topsides and cockpit need a new coat of paint, the interior needs an overhaul, wiring removed, the galley area is blackened from cooking. The headlining in the forepeak requires a little glue in places. The wood rubbing strake on the stern port side quarter (about 18 inches)needs replacing. The cushions in all berths are old but clean. There is no winch for the mainsail hoist, and it is not essentialto have one!

There is a depth gauge fitted on the yacht but a new computeris required??? I use an excellent handheld sonar depth gaugethat is solid state and available to purchase separately for £50.00 There are many things to re repair and make better if you choose todo so but the yacht functions very well, the only thing I’d really like to do is rewire some of the wiring and I would remove the head (toilet) as it is old fashioned and not the lightest.New firmer cushions would be a welcome improvement. The kicker line to hold the boom down could do with replacing as it’s getting a little stiff/old. Cost £15.00?? There is no VHF radio but wiring is there if required, I use a handheld VHFwhich is not included in the sale but can be purchased separately,it’s the latest Standard Horizon handheld, it has an automatic distress button, and I use it to navigate, put in waypoints etc, it will give me the compass course to steer, distance to waypoint and speed over ground. It’s an amazing bit of kit, I love it!

It comes with a rechargeable battery cradle to recharge the rechargeable battery, AA batteries can also be used in the radio if necessary. Available to purchase separately for £125.00 She is a fantastic yacht to sail. NOT INCLUDED IN THE SALE but can be purchased separately:100 amp hour large Solar panel cost over £125.00 new in 2014 but still in mint condition can be purchased for £50.00 NOT INCLUDED IN THE SALE: Excellent Handheld portable solid state DEPTH GAUGE cost £135.00 new in 2015 can be purchased for £50.00 Mobile phone: Adam Kingdon phone

Friends, meet Magnifik Midget 22 with motor Tohatsu 5 hp. (2005) for 500 euro only!

Location: Sweden

Length: 7 meters Width: 2.12 meters Draft: 1 meter Berths: 4 Toilet: available Kitchen (galley): available

A small but reliable full-keel sailboat at a very cheap price. In fact you buy the motor and get a sailboat as a gift 🙂

The plastic is in good condition, the sailboat is seaworthy, it is already in the water, there’s a full set of sails and a jib furler.

Electric works need to be finished, in my opinion it’s worth to update the wood as well but on the whole everything is in good condition.

Where else can you find a long-keel sailboat with a relatively fresh motor for 500 euro?
