Top 13 Luxury Sport Fishing Yachts You Need to See

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: August 8, 2024

It is possible to fish from any type of boat, but a sportfishing yacht is purpose-built for angling aficionados to chase fish of all sizes and species, whether it’s fun fishing for sailfish and mahi-mahi off the beach in Palm Beach or campaigning a professional-level billfish crew on the high-profile (and big-money) tournament circuit from the Bahamas to Bermuda and back. The best sport-fishing yachts combine rugged, blue-water construction with performance, range, agile handling and the comforts of luxury-yacht living. On the outside, sportfish yachts are notable for their dance-floor size cockpits for fish fighting; livewells to keep baits kicking; in-deck fish boxes to keep the catch chilled; and an armada of rod holders for drift fishing, kite fishing or trolling. They also are known for big diesel horsepower and speed, often north of 40 knots. Sportfish yachts are also notable for luxurious interiors with supple leathers, granite countertops, high-end galley appliances and spacious staterooms. These are highly self-sufficient angling platforms geared for life beyond the horizon where the water is deep and the fish are big.

Viking Yachts 82 Convertible

Viking Yacht Company recently debuted its newest sport-fisherman: the 82 Convertible . Hull No. 1 is serving as the factory demo for the busy summer tournament season in Bermuda and along the East Coast. Thanks to many factors, including the use of computational fluid dynamics, performance is exceptional: twin MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines provide a reported 42-knot top hop and a 36-knot cruise speed. This 82-footer also leverages several proven systems for ease of use and efficiency, such as digital switching from Octoplex as well as the Optimus electronic power steering system. The Viking 82 is engineered for many systems that were previously custom installations and are now on the options sheet, including omnidirectional sonar, multiple water makers and crushed ice machines, tuna tube bait systems as well as the extensive use of refrigerated storage boxes. The Viking 82 is available in three models: open bridge, enclosed bridge and sky bridge.

Royal Huisman 171

A 171-foot sportfisherman? Yes. That’s exactly what the six-deck Special One is, from Dutch builder Royal Huisman. The interior and exterior design is from noted Dutch yacht-design firm Vripack, which calls the vessel “a sport-fisher on steroids.” The hull and superstructure of the supersize sportfish is Alustar aluminum, a material known for its strength and relatively light weight. Even with six decks, Vripack has managed to create sleek lines. It starts with a high freeboard forward that seemingly dares the ocean to approach. Transitioning from the bow, the sheerline slopes downwards in a steady cadence. The flowing sheerline resolves seamlessly at the cockpit. The vessel’s raked house and stacked deck are juxtaposed against the long profile, creating a sinewy aesthetic, which is no simple feat in this 171-footer. Add in all of the expected angling accouterments and 30-knot speed, and you have a sportfish yacht ready to chase fish around the world.

Rybovich 94

Size, speed and agility is a unique trifecta in a sportfish boat, but the 94-foot, 41-knot III Amigos from Michael Rybovich and Sons checks all those boxes as well as a few more too. The sportfish boat, designed by Patrick Knowles with naval architecture from Dusty Rybovich, is built in cold-molded mahogany. Prop pockets help keep the boat’s half-load draft down to a Bahamas-friendly 5 feet. The Rybovich 94’s impressive speed is helped by a pair of beefy 2,600 hp MTU diesels.

The owner of III Amigos also owns a 196-foot Feadship superyacht and, while he wanted the sportfish to be all business on the outside, he wanted luxury-yacht finishes on the inside. Subtle but telling touches are the solid doors to the staterooms; each mimics the owner’s Feadship with ¾-inch thickness. The doors close flush (each has hidden hinges), and the sound is of a Rolls-Royce door closing.

Release Boatworks 43 Gameboat

Reminiscent of arguably one of the most classic sport-fishing boats of all time—the 43-foot Merritt—the 43 Gameboat from Release Boatworks takes that design to a new level of sophistication and performance. These include a hull built using blister-resistant modified epoxy resin, which is vacuum-infused using Airex foam cores with E-glass hybrid fiberglass laminates to maximize strength while minimizing weight. The stringers are built with fiberglass encapsulated foam, and the bulkheads are vacuum-infused with composite cores. The extensive use of composite materials throughout the boat creates a strong finished product and saves a great deal of weight, providing admirable performance. With standard twin 550 hp Cummins QSB6.7 diesels, the 43 Gameboat cruises at 30 knots and tops out at 35 knots. Notable options include 600 hp Cummins QSCs or Volvo Penta D-8s, omni sonar, gyrostabilization and various tower options. The Release 43 Gameboat is also available in walkaround, flybridge walkaround or express layouts.

Viking Yachts 38 Billfish

The Viking Yachts 38 Billfish offers a special place in the hearts of bluewater sport-fishing enthusiasts around the world, with its combination of versatility, comfort and performance. The reasons are numerous. As an owner-operator vessel, the 38 Billfish offers simplicity and ease of maintenance, serving as a ready-to-go fishing machine that is equally adept at inshore and offshore excursions as well as for extended cruising with family and friends, thanks to its reliable inboard diesel power. It has a large cockpit as well as the speed and range to fish well offshore alongside much larger vessels, while also providing a fast, safe and comfortable ride in a variety of sea conditions.

From its spacious tackle center to a one-of-a-kind walnut interior Hull No. 65 is a tailored fit, and it also has the latest in propulsion tech in the form of twin 2,025 hp Caterpillar C23B diesels. Taking full advantage of the Cat power, Rebelette cruises comfortably at 1,750 rpm while making an easy 31 knots. With 1,650 gallons of fuel, it has range to spare at this speed. Push this vessel up to 1,950 rpm to reach a fast cruising speed of 37 knots, which is impressive in any book. Wide-open throttle is 43 knots, fully loaded and ready to fish.

F&S Boatworks 82

F&S Boatworks’ stellar reputation stands tall in the world of custom sportfish builders so it’s no surprise that its latest creation, the 82-foot Special Situation , continues the tradition. One of the hallmarks of any F&S is the performance and Special Situation certainly doesn’t disappoint in that department. Powered by a pair of  2,600 hp MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines, at 2,000 rpm and 80 percent engine load, cruising speed is 36 knots, burning just south of 200 gallons per hour. Backing off to 1,650 rpm, it’s using 122 gph at 28 knots. At the other end of the spectrum, the top hop is more than 42 knots at 2,450 rpm.

Bayliss Boatworks 60

The 60-foot Sequentis was recently delivered to its new owners by the team at Bayliss Boatworks and it represents the first walkaround design for the storied North Carolina custom boatbuilder. Designed for live-bait tournament sailfishing in South Florida, Sequentis has 360-degree fishability as well as multiple livewells and pitch-bait tubes. And in a sport where having the ability to quickly relocate to a hot bite can mean the difference between finishing in first place or dead last, Sequentis is also fast. Powered by two MTU 12V2000 M96X diesel engines, it reportedly hit speeds of well over 42 knots during the initial sea trials in July 2024.

Albemarle 53 Spencer Edition

Albemarle Boats and Spencer Yachts formed a partnership to design and build a semicustom Carolina boat, with the goal of bringing in the characteristic design elements, styling and performance from the custom world but to do it in a production setting, allowing for faster build times on the order of months rather than years. It was a dream several years in the making, and the result is the Albemarle 53 Spencer Edition .

Winter Custom Yachts

Tim Winters and his team of boatbuilders at Winter Custom Yachts in North Carolina have truly optimized the walkaround concept, taking full advantage of its inherent versatility. Anglers are no longer confined to the limited space in the cockpit and have the freedom to fight fish all the way around the boat from bow to stern. Even just taking the family on a shorthanded picnic cruise is safer and easier since everyone has full access to the bow without having to navigate a slippery deck. Its latest 46-footer , Thumper , is one of the most versatile boats in this size range on the water today.

The Best Offshore and Deep Sea Fishing Boats

best offshore fishing boats

3 Deep Sea Fishing Boat Types

1. center console boats.

Center consoles are ideal for offshore fishing due to their versatility. These boats allow for 360-degree rod movement around the gunwales, typically come equipped for a range of tactics from trolling to live-baiting to kite fishing, and are designed with ample fuel capacity for long trips. Their hull designs also ensure safe and comfortable journeys far from shore.

Explore Center Consoles

2. Sportfishing Yachts

A sport fishing yacht is the ultimate machine for dedicated offshore anglers. These yachts can handle cruises of up to 100 miles, allowing for days of fishing in comfort, often with luxurious amenities like onboard air conditioning and ice makers. Their size also lets you fish in weather conditions that would keep smaller boats docked.

3. Walkaround Fishing Boats

Families who fish blue water often choose walkaround boats. A cabin with a berth and a private head provides a comfortable space to take a break or seek shelter during a rainstorm, which is especially important with kids onboard. Many walkarounds also feature fully protected helms, allowing for fishing in poor weather and extending your season into late fall or winter.

Key Features of Offshore Fishing Boats

Whether you're dreaming of battling a big blue marlin or reeling in a bluefin tuna, there are a few essentials that every deep sea fishing boat needs. Start with plenty of rod holders for setting up a trolling spread or resting rods between casts. Built-in tackle boxes are invaluable for keeping gear organized and avoiding the hassle of carrying a big box back and forth. A raw water washdown is essential, as deep sea fishing can get messy with bait and catches. If you plan to keep your catch, an integrated fish box is a must. Depending on your fishing methods, other features might be crucial too. Outriggers are important for trolling, and a rigging station with a sink and bait tray is handy. Live bait anglers will need at least one live well, often multiple, for different bait. Those using electric reels for deep-dropping or kite fishing will want 12-volt outlets under the gunwales. In addition to these built-in features, you'll need to stock up on gear tailored to where you fish and what you target.

What to Consider When Buying a Deep Sea Fishing Boat

Beyond equipment, several key attributes distinguish good deep-sea fishing boats from the best. As you make your choice, be sure to consider:

Does the boat have enough fuel capacity for your desired trips? When calculating a boat’s range, use only 90% of its fuel capacity, keeping 10% in reserve to avoid running out before reaching the inlet. Many seasoned offshore anglers go a step further, following the rule "one-third out, one-third back, one-third in reserve" to ensure they never run low on fuel.

When it comes to fishing miles and miles from the inlet, size does matter. This is another one of those factors that requires you to make a judgement call depending on where and how you fish. Most captains would feel comfortable running a 21-foot center console 10 or 12 miles into the ocean to go deep sea fishing on a calm, sunny day in south Florida. But trying to take that very same boat 50 or 60 miles out into the open Atlantic to reach the edge of the Continental Shelf off the coast of Maryland would be considered by many to be a dangerous over-reach.

Hull Design

A boat’s hull design impacts its seakeeping, speed, efficiency, and stability, influencing your fishing range and the sea conditions you can handle. Typically, center consoles and walkarounds feature a wave-splitting deep-V hull, while larger sportfishing yachts often use a semi-V or nearly flat bottom for better handling in rough seas. Multihull designs are also popular among offshore fishermen for their smooth performance in rough water.

Is a Deep Sea Fishing Boat Right for You?

Choosing the right boat involves many factors, and it won’t be easy. Our top advice is to spend time on the ocean with each type of boat—take sea trials and test various makes and models. Visit local boat shows  to inspect different options. Do your research and take your time. Once you find the ideal deep-sea fishing boat for your needs, you’ll be set for the ultimate angling adventures.

If you’re looking for everything that a big tournament boat has to offer packed into a slightly smaller size, look no further. You’ll find all the storage, power, and fun you need in the Seahunter Tournament 33.

With an overall length of 31’10” and a 10’2” beam, the Seahunter 31 offers a lot of room, in both the bow and transom area. It’s wide beam provides an unbelievably stable platform making it perfect for drift, kite and bottom fishing.

The SeaHunter 30 Floridian builds on the strengths of the 28 model, offering enhanced stability and more deck space for a versatile fishing experience. With its larger design, it navigates smoothly through diverse sea conditions, making it ideal for both inshore and offshore adventures. This model combines the practicality of its smaller counterpart with additional comforts and luxury, ensuring a seamless experience for anglers and leisure seekers alike. The 30 Floridian is a superb choice for those who value flexibility and performance, without the necessity of a larger tow vehicle.

With the ability to gather bait in shore and head offshore at impressive speed, all in the same boat, The Seahunter 28 is truly our go-anywhere, do-anything model.

Deep Sea Fishing: boats, fish species & techniques

Former U.S. President Herbert Hoover once said, “All men are equal before fish.” That saying is never more true than when deep sea fishing on a sportfishing boat. The great wide ocean is home to legendary fish and humans spend a great deal of time trying to catch them. Deep sea fishing is exciting, exhilarating, and exhausting, but there is absolutely nothing like it.

Deep sea fishing is different from inshore fishing. First of all, the fish are bigger. Seas, gulfs, and oceans provide a much larger habitat for fish to roam, and hunt each other. This means larger fish, but it also requires different techniques and equipment to catch them. The techniques you use to catch bonefish on flats aren’t going to work trying to catch big game species like striped marlin, mahi mahi, or a bluefin tuna.

As opposed to inshore or near-shore fishing, deep sea fishing is usually done in waters at least 100 feet deep, and as far out as a hundred miles or more from shore. How far offshore you need to go depends on several factors. First, what type of fish do you want to catch? Most of the deep sea game fish species are pelagic fish, which means that they live in the pelagic zone of ocean waters – being neither close to the bottom nor near the shore.

Some fish species like hanging out on the continental shelf, around deep underwater reefs and seamounts. Other fish species like to hang out past the drop – which is characterized by a steep drop in depth from the continental shelf. In these areas there can be underwater canyons and structures, and different types of fish are found all over. Pelagic fish like to hang out in these deeper waters because there is an abundance of food sources, bait fish – also known as forage— which will migrate from place to place during the year.

fishing charter

Big Game deep sea fishing boat

The first thing you need to catch the big game fish is a fast, seaworthy vessel. These come in various types, from center console open motorboats with biminis or T-tops to large sportfishing vessels with air-conditioned cabins, some reaching 60 or 80 feet long. Engine size and speed are important, because your boat isn’t just going to get you to the fish, it also has to follow the fish, some which can swim up to 40 knots per hour. Smaller sportfishing boats will have a minimum of two outboard engines, and some have more. Larger sportfishing vessels such as Hatteras or Viking will have large inboard diesel engines that can be 1,000 hp each, and many have two of these! Top speeds of some of these sportfishing machines are in the 35 – 40 knot range.

Finding the fish, chasing the fish, and eventually heading back home safely all require a safe, seaworthy boat and a captain and crew who have the expertise to get it done. The next thing you need is fish catching equipment: rods, reels, gaffs, holsters— all the gear that make catching happen. Every piece of equipment is important, down to the size of the hook and the type of fishing line. For deep sea fishing braided line is strong and popular. Special monofilament line made from fluorocarbon is strong and practically invisible to fish. Add to that mix the ever-important lures and bait, live and frozen. A boat that has electronic fish finders and other underwater fish locators are one step ahead of the game, those crews mean business. Nowadays many private and commercial fishing vessels have underwater cameras to see exactly what is down there. Most modern fishing boats carry radar and chartplotters for increased safety at sea and in order to navigate accurately. Lastly, you’ll need the most important element of all — a captain and guide who knows how to find the fish and give you the experience of a lifetime. Ideally, this is a team that goes out fishing most days of the week. A captain that knows his boat and his fishing grounds, has all the necessary gear onboard, and a crew that will help you bring the catch of your dreams onboard.

Some of the most popular deep sea fish are also the most tasty: many kinds of tuna and mahi mahi (dorado) are hard fighting fish that are not only fun to catch but also a prize on the plate. Tuna fishing is its own science, and one could spend a lifetime getting to know what lures they will bite, and where to find them consistently. Mahi mahi are hard, fast fighting fish that are also beautiful to watch. They are known worldwide for their delicious meat and have entire fishing tournaments dedicated to catching them. They also migrate and are available seasonally in certain areas of the world.

Marlin is THE most popular fish when deep sea fishing

Marlin is THE most popular fish when deep sea fishing

These migrations are one of the reasons why deep sea fishing draws so many fanatics. When the fish are running there is nothing like it. Marlin is another species that attracts dedicated followers that travel the world to catch the biggest marlin they can. Marlin, like other pelagic species, like to migrate along underwater channels such as those created by the Mona Passage off the Dominican Republic, or the Yucatán Channel in Riviera Maya , Mexico . If you go fishing in Punta Cana , you most likely head to the Mona Passage. These are veritable fish highways dotted with sportfishing boats ready to pull monster fish feeding on forage. Another place you can find marlin are around underwater rock formations like those off Cape Verde and especially the Island of São Vicente. These underwater rocks have a tremendous deep sea fishing life and are attractive to pelagic species because they provide reef-like shelter and food sources for bait fish— this is what Saltwater Sportsman calls “marlin country”.

Certain species like Wahoo and Bigeye Tuna also like to hang in the deep canyons and around underwater rock formations. But, one thing is certain, you can’t find these fish or even access them without the right charter boat. Deep sea fishing is not simply a sport, or a day fishing in the ocean, it’s a lifestyle that requires a certain dedication to the art and science of catching pelagic fish.

Different types of Deep Sea Fishing

There are many different ways to catch a fish, and the method you choose will depend on the fish you are trying to catch, as well as the time of day and how they are feeding or presenting in the area of ocean where you are fishing. The most common types of sport fishing are trolling, chumming (or chunking), popping, and jigging. The most popular method to fish for tuna, marlin, billfish, wahoo, even mahi mahi is by trolling. Depending on the species you are trying to catch you’ll want to maintain a speed of 5 – 8 knots. The deeper you set your bait, the slower you’ll want to troll. When trolling for different fish species, anglers spread their tackle out from the back of the boat in a variety of patterns. Some use outrigged poles called greensticks to create the illusion of a loose school of fish. Different lures are deployed to attract fish to strike. When trolling you want to keep an eye out for weedlines, changes in water color, and signs of life such as birds or jumping fish. Those are great places to troll for bait as well as your target species.

Another popular technique is kite fishing, which is a variation of trolling. As Salt Water Sportman magazine explains, “Fishing kites present baits splashing at the surface, emitting distress vibrations that travel through the water ¬column and over a broad swath of water. For example, when at drift, three to six baits can be fished downwind from one or more kites, whereas three to four additional baits can be fished upwind on flat lines, staggered at various depths.” Kite fishing is especially effective with dolphin, wahoo, sailfish and tuna.

Where you choose to troll will also depend on what species you are expecting to catch, as well as the bait fish spotted in the area. Paying close attention to detail will net you the best outcome. For example, bigeye tuna and wahoo hang out in canyons, so trolling along underwater contours at 250 ft or lower will draw the fish up, whereas fishing for bluefin can depend on the baitfish available – in certain cases you can troll around a school of bluefin.

Trolling is effective with all kinds of lures and bait, which on one hand can be great, but on the other hand may make it hard to choose what to use. It’s ideal to have a good variety of options onboard, and be ready to switch things up. But, one thing is for sure: it won’t be boring! Favorite all-purpose baits are squid and ballyhoo, and it’s common to catch bait fish while at sea to use later on the same day.

Chumming or chunking is a popular method of bringing fish near the boat, and is a technique that works with dolphin, tuna, shark, and wahoo. By slowly drifting and creating a wake of chunks of bait fish such as butterfish, mackerel, and even smaller tuna you can then set out a troll with live baits and lures to score a monster catch.

Another method of catching fish offshore during your fishing trips is by casting spin reels and poppers. Believe it or not, anglers use high-end spinning reels and rods and precision-tuned custom lures to reel in all kinds of fish, including huge bluefin weighing hundreds of pounds. Light tackle fishing for large fish can leave you lightheaded and hooked for more. The anglers lure the fish to the surface with plugs that they “pop” up and down. If they’ve chosen the right spot, the fish will explode from the surface and take off with the lure. Some anglers end up boating the fish, others just want the thrill of the fight with a fish built for speed and power.

Nice "Sama" caught Jigging during a deep sea fishing tour in Fuerteventura

Sama caught jigging in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Jigging is another way to draw a large fish to the surface. In these scenarios, the boat will be drifting along an underwater canyon or a sea mount or ridge. Anglers will drop lines with lures at different depths and jig to attract the bite. The best place to drop a jig is in the middle of a bait school. There are few species that can’t be caught with a jig. Salt Water Sportsman describes how a jig works: “A metal jig with free-swinging hooks is dropped beneath the boat and retrieved with a rhythmic motion that creates a vertical walk-the-dog action that’s irresistible to fish. The technique works over featureless bottom, plus it’s effective when fished through suspended schools of bait. It works over wrecks, reefs and rock piles. It works for rockfish, yellowtail and yellowfin tuna on the West Coast, stripers and bluefin tuna in the Northeast, and grouper, king mackerel, wahoo, snapper and tuna in the Southeast and the Gulf.”

Deep Sea Bottom Fishing

Even when you are far out in 150 to 200ft water you can go bottom fishing. Bottom fishing scores a different kind of fish, demersal instead of pelagic. Demersal fish live and feed on or near the bottom of the sea in the demersal zone. They occupy the sea floors and are found in deep waters on or near the continental slope or along the continental rise. The objective for rigs that are used in bottom fishing is to take your bait to the bottom, where the water hits the sand, and lure in the fish. Bottom fishing mostly uses live bait like squid also uses artificial lures but. Fishing is done when the boat is stopped (anchored or drifting over “spots” where fish are known to lurk in shallow water – 100 – 300 feet deep). By dropping a weighted line in the desired location (found via fishfinder), you can catch a number of demersal fish such as snapper, grouper, barrelfish, halibut, and redfish.

The bait, of course, has to be appetizing to the fish, which is why live bait is often used more often than artificial lures. The live bait movements attract local fish and when they strike you’ll know because your line will start to pay out from the reel. Set your drag, reel it in and get ready for a fight. While bottom fish don’t usually get as big as the larger pelagic fish, you can still reel in some large fish! Snapper can get up to 35 lbs, grouper up to 70lbs, and halibut even larger. If you are fishing for larger fish you might want to use an electric reel to make it easier to bring large fish to the surface. Acting like an electric winch, these types of reels can keep your arm from falling off as you bring up your huge deep sea monster.

Best Ocean Boats: Types and Brands to Buy

15th nov 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

What makes a good ocean boat ? It’s a valid question, commonly asked, but as with many boating questions, there is no one answer. In fact, there is no best ocean boat either. Only the best ocean-going boat for you and what you want it to do. Whether it’s offshore fishing, sailing around the world, coastal cruising, or extended voyages, there will be good boats for the task—and others, not so good.

Of course there are many characteristics that ocean-going boats will need to have that are different from those designed to ply gentler inland waters where breaking seas, long distances, and inclement weather rarely if ever are a factor. Here we’ll take a look at the types of boats that are designed for the ocean and also look at some of the best ocean boat brands on the market today.

What Characteristics Do the Best Ocean Boats Have?

Seaworthy in open water and stormy weather: A boat tackling ocean waters needs to be sturdy enough, large enough, and/or nimble enough to navigate the bigger seas and stronger winds that can arise. If you’re tackling oceans, you’ll typically want a boat that is 20 feet long or larger and built with strength. It’s important to know your boat’s limitations, to check the weather carefully before venturing out, and prepare accordingly. Knowing your boat’s range—is it a long-distance, bluewater voyager or a day-sailing coastal boat?—is also key to staying safe.

Deep-V hulls and deep draft: Most ocean-going boats have deep-V hulls and adequate draft to provide extra stability in turbulent waters, high waves, and bad weather. An exception to that are multihulls, which can offer excellent stability thanks to their multiple hulls and wide shape. In addition to a deep V hull, ocean-going boats are often designed with strakes—molded lines running down the hull of motorboats that help them reach planing speed and reduce the slap from large waves. If you don’t plan to venture offshore or undertake long voyages, a shallow or modified V hull is often ideal for more coastal ocean cruising in shallower waters.

Corrosion resistance : In contrast to fresh water, salt water is highly corrosive and damaging to boats, and they need to be designed for and maintained to cope with those damaging effects (see our guide to the differences between saltwater and freshwater boats for more advice). Boats designed for salt water will have marine-grade metals such as stainless steel, and must be built with corrosion-resistant hardware.

Power and fuel capacity : If you’re going to cruise farther, it makes sense that your boat will need a fuel-efficient engine as well as a larger fuel tank to allow you to carry on longer without refueling. Fast boats such as those used for offshore fishing commonly have large powerful engines, allowing you to get to the offshore fishing grounds in less time. For those crossing oceans, sailboats have long been the boat of choice since wind-power is free, if occasionally finicky.

Sleeping and storage capacity: If you’re cruising long distances, you’ll need to ensure that you have enough cabin space, living space, and storage space for supplies to accommodate all those on board. Bunks will typically be fitted with lee cloths to securely hold sleeping crew members in their berths. Ventilation is also critical, allowing fresh air below decks without bringing sea water along at the same time.

The Best Types and Brands of Ocean Boats

Ocean sailboats.

Sailboats bring the romance to cruising the oceans, and are able to sail motor-less for thousands of miles, making them the top choice when it comes to long range ocean cruising. The choice of sailboat is endless, but it depends how far you want to travel as to how big a sailboat you’ll need. Coastal sailing can be done in most sizes and styles of sailboat, while you’ll ideally be looking for a strong and sturdy sailboat over 35 feet to travel long distances (see our guide to bluewater sailboats under 40 feet for some exciting small sailboat options and what to look for in an ocean sailboat).

The best ocean sailboat brands

  • Hallberg-Rassy has been producing quality ocean-going cruising boats in Sweden for more than half a century. The company’s current lineup of comfortable, seaworthy, premium-priced yachts from 34 to 69 feet LOA.  Hallberg-Rassy boats for sale

Center Console Boats

Center consoles boats are high-powered vessels, commonly used for offshore fishing due to their open deck layout allowing for 360 fishability. Fast, stable, roomy, and well-equipped, they are wonderfully versatile and are available from trailerable 17-foot models up to 45 feet and longer, with cabins and heads. They are typically able to handle big seas and weather, but don’t have the sleeping, living, and storage space of longer-range types of ocean boats.

The best center console boat brands

  • Boston Whaler have been around since 1958 and have one of the best reputations in the center console industry for both their fishing and recreational boats.  Boston Whaler boats for sale
  • Everglades is a brand offering 23- to 45-foot center consoles with a clear focus on fishing offshore. Cabin Cruisers

Cabin cruisers make up one of the most versatile and popular of ocean boats as they are multifunctional, seaworthy, and well-designed for coastal cruising. While not normally suited to prolonged periods at sea or long-range cruising, this style of boat features home comforts, modest galley areas, and cabins that can be used for extended trips.

The best ocean cabin cruisers

  • Sea Ray are masters in producing small, luxurious cabin cruisers that offer weekends at sea, plenty of home comforts, and reassuring seaworthiness. Their Sundancer range is from 26 feet to 37 feet, and the SLX series goes up to 40 feet.  Sea Ray boats for sale

Cruising Catamarans

Cruising catamarans are fast gaining popularity for their long-range capabilities as well as their stability and huge amounts of extra living and storage space compared to monohulls of the same size. With salons and cockpits that stand well above the water line you get wrap around sea views, as well as huge cabin and galley space. They’re extremely capable blue water cruisers, but also perfect for coastal adventures with larger groups than you could comfortably get on a monohull. They don’t keel over in the same way as sailboats, offering impressive stability and speed, and are fast becoming a popular choice for around the world cruisers and charter companies.

What is Deep Sea Fishing?

What is Deep Sea Fishing? Understanding the Basics

deep sea fishing yachts

Table of Contents

Last Updated on February 13, 2023 by Boatsetter Team

Deep Sea fishing captivates the imagination of countless anglers, and it’s no wonder why — when you’re out in the ocean miles from land, there’s no telling what sort of pelagic predator will take the bait. Will it be a barracuda, a shark, or a billfish? You simply never know, and being surprised at what you catch is the norm rather than the exception.

So, exactly what is deep sea fishing? You may also ask “what is offshore fishing,” because many people would consider the terms interchangeable.

Some others, especially professional anglers, believe that it doesn’t qualify as “offshore” until you reach the edge of the Continental Shelf. Any closer to home they may term “inshore fishing” even though it’s in the ocean, and some eschew the term “deep sea” entirely.

So, how far out is deep sea fishing versus offshore fishing? In truth, there’s no clear definition for any of these terms, and different people use them differently. That said, most people would agree you’re deep-sea fishing when you’re in the ocean, you travel far enough from land that the water is relatively deep, and the target species are oceanic in nature.

Where to Go Deep Sea Fishing

All of America’s oceanic coastlines offer deep-sea fishing of one type or another. You can go deep sea fishing from San Diego , give it a shot fishing in New Jersey, or try it fishing from Galveston, Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. However, the decision of where to go deep-sea fishing will have a dramatic impact on the experience and especially on how long it takes to cruise to the fishing grounds.

Let’s compare San Diego versus New Jersey, for example.

  • From the west coast port , a boat will reach waters several hundred feet deep shortly after leaving the harbor and can be in thousands of feet of water in just 12 or 14 miles.
  • But that same boat leaving out of New Jersey would have to cruise for 25 or 30 miles to get into water depths measured by the hundreds of feet and may run 60 or 70 miles before reaching water thousands of feet deep.

Not only does where you go deep sea fishing have a big impact on how long the cruise will be, but it also dictates the types of fish you catch.

  • Let’s say you’re fishing in Jacksonville, FL . A deep sea fishing trip could target anything from snappers to groupers to mahi-mahi, depending on how far out you’re willing to go and what tactics and tackle you have.
  • But from the Virginia coast northward, you’d likely see a very different selection of species, ranging from black sea bass to tautog to marlin and tuna.

Deep Sea Fishing Boat.

What Do You Catch Deep Sea Fishing?

As we just mentioned, where and how you’re fishing will dictate species selection. But we can narrow down the options into a few basic categories of what you can catch deep sea fishing. If you go far offshore in the hunt for pelagic species, in most of the oceans you could encounter:

  • Marlin (multiple species)
  • Tuna (multiple species)

Deep Sea Fishing in Florida, Mahi-Mahi.

If you don’t go way out into offshore waters, you’ll find a different selection of fish depending on where you are. Common species for different areas include:

North Atlantic Coast

  • Black sea bass
  • Striped Bass

South Atlantic Coast and the Gulf of Mexico

  • Grouper (multiple species)
  • Jack Crevalle
  • King Mackerel
  • Snapper (multiple species)
  • Sharks (multiple species)
  • Spanish Mackerel

Grouper Deep Sea Fishing.

Pacific Coast

  • Calico bass
  • Shark (multiple species)
  • White sea bass

Deep Sea Fishing Cost

You might assume deep sea fishing cost is through the roof, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. True, offshore fishing for pelagics can cost thousands of dollars per trip (in addition to the cost of a boat!) and even when split among the crew , several hundred per person. But many deep sea fishing options cost a whole lot less.

You can get on a large “ head boat” or “party boat” which takes out dozens of passengers at a time, and tickets to get aboard can range from $50 to $150 per person. As a rule, the farther out the boat goes the higher the charges will be.

Deep Sea Fishing Charter.

Many anglers will opt to hire a fishing charter to get out to the deep sea spots, and these boats come with all the gear and a captain and crew. Most take up to six anglers, so when you divide up the cost, it isn’t prohibitive. Just what will that cost be? It depends on what part of the nation you’re in, the time of year, and other variables like the current cost of fuel. That said, it will generally range from a couple hundred dollars per person to as much as $500 per person.

If you’d rather fish on your own, another option is to check out some fishing boat rentals . In that case, however, you’ll need your own gear and know-how. Deep sea fishing requires a lot of knowledge to succeed, so most people will go down this route only if they have been deep sea fishing many times.

We can’t get that experience for you, but we can help you get started down the road—check out Deep Sea Fishing Tips , to learn some of the basics.

In the next section, we will discuss the important factors to consider when buying a deep sea fishing boat , ensuring you make an informed decision that suits your needs and preferences.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Deep Sea Fishing Boat

Factors to Consider When Buying a Deep Sea Fishing Boat

When purchasing a deep sea fishing boat, it’s important to take several key factors into consideration to ensure you make the right choice. These factors include range , size , and hull design . Let’s explore each of these factors in detail:

The range of a boat refers to its fuel capacity and its ability to cover long distances. When buying a deep sea fishing boat, you’ll want to ensure that it has enough fuel capacity to reach your desired fishing grounds and return safely. Consider the distance you plan to travel and the fuel consumption of the boat to determine if it can meet your range requirements.

The size of the boat is another important factor to consider. Smaller boats may not be suitable for long offshore runs, especially in certain weather conditions. You’ll need to assess how many people will be onboard, the amount of storage space needed for fishing gear, and your comfort requirements. Opting for a larger boat can provide more stability and space, but it may also come with higher costs for maintenance, storage, and fuel consumption.

Hull Design

The hull design of a deep sea fishing boat plays a significant role in its seakeeping abilities and overall performance. Different hull designs offer various benefits and drawbacks. For example, a deep-vee hull provides excellent stability in rough seas, while a flat-bottomed hull offers enhanced maneuverability in shallower waters. Consider your fishing style, the conditions you’ll be fishing in, and the type of ride you prefer to choose a hull design that best suits your needs.

When buying a deep sea fishing boat, it’s essential to evaluate these factors to ensure you select a boat that meets your specific requirements. From range to size and hull design, each factor contributes to the overall performance and suitability of the boat for your fishing adventures.

By considering the range, size, and hull design of a deep sea fishing boat, you can make an informed decision and find a boat that enhances your deep sea fishing experiences.
