Polynesian paradise at catamaran resort and spa in san diego.

Travels with Greg

catamaran resort video

By Greg ARAGON

My 6-year-old son has never left California. So when he said the Catamaran Resort and Spa ( www.catamaranresort.com ) in San Diego is more fun than Hawaii, I took it with a grain of salt.

But then I started thinking. He has a good point. The tropical island-inspired Catamaran has everything a kid and his family love. It offers a big, beautiful swimming pool, a sandy beach, spacious rooms and suites, bike rentals, a video arcade, an onsite restaurant and lots of opportunities to make new friends.

Our getaway to the Catamaran Resort began recently when we checked into a gorgeous bay front suite overlooking San Diego’s stunning Mission Bay. Spanning 438 square feet, the room was highlighted by a large patio that is literally steps from the sandy beach.

catamaran resort video

The suite also boasted a big private bedroom with two queen beds and a large TV, a separate living area with another big TV, a pullout sofa, a wet bar with a refrigerator and a dining area. A large and spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower completed the room’s layout.

Beyond the suite, the rest of the property is just as impressive. Featuring 310 rooms, the sprawling Polynesian-themed resort is surrounded by palm trees, waterfalls, koi ponds, exotic birds and lush vegetation.

catamaran resort video

The hotel is located in San Diego’s Pacific Beach community and sits on the shores of Mission Bay, a large, artificial saltwater bay created for recreational activities such as wakeboarding, jet skiing, sailing, camping, cycling, jogging, roller skating, skateboarding and sunbathing.

One of my family’s favorite spots at the resort was Mission Bay’s sandy beach located steps from our patio. Here the kids made sand castles and played in the water while we relaxed in lawn chairs, soaking rays and admiring the coastline.

The beach was also where we rented a 21-ft Hurricane powerboat and cruised around the bay for a fun-filled hour. We rented the boat from Action Sports Rentals ( www.actionsportrentals.com/catamaran-resort-hotel-spa/ ), which has a booth on the dock in front of the Catamaran Resort.

It was an epic voyage. After learning how to control the vessel and finding the proper speed for the bay, we cruised into the morning sun. Along the way we waved to boaters and paddle boarders, sailed beneath an old bridge and past expensive condos and luxury hotels. The boat was easy to maneuver, had lots of seating and shade and was a perfect family outing for the afternoon.

catamaran resort video

After mooring the boat, we went to the resort’s large pool area where my kids played in the water and made new friends. Secluded behind tall palm trees, the pool is a tropical oasis with lots of seating, a Jacuzzi and a bar. Each day, the pool area offered a free kids’ program for hotel guests.

Next to the pool is also a video arcade, full of free games for kids and their parents. My son and I had a great time there, shooting basketballs, racing cars and playing foosball.

catamaran resort video

From the pool, we walked along a lush, tropical path to Oceana Coastal Kitchen, the resort’s on-site signature restaurant. Boasting beachfront dining with spectacular views of Mission Bay, Oceana serves creative, coastal California dishes with an eclectic flare. The restaurant, led by executive chef Paul Arias, won Tripadvisor’s 2023 Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” Restaurants for Everyday Eats, ranking 10 th best in the U.S.

Our dinner at Oceana began with a delicious bowl of New England style clam chowder with bacon, red bliss potato, thyme, cream and steamed little neck clams on top and mixed in. I am a major chowder fan and this bowl had the perfect amount of creaminess along with a perfect clam to potato ratio, making it one of the best I’ve had.

catamaran resort video

The restaurant also specializes in sushi and when we sampled the Oceana House Roll we fell in love. The rolls are exquisitely filled with eel, tempura shrimp, crab, Nori, avocado and unagi sauce. This dish is a work of culinary art.

We completed our dinner at Oceana with a succulent grilled prime hanger steak with smoked potato puree, watercress, cippolini and macadamia chimichurri; and  a tasty Hawaiian style pad Thai with stir fried vegetables, tofu, pineapple, chili, macadamia nuts, cilantro and soy.

After dinner we strolled along the beach and watched the sun fall into Mission Bay.

The next morning we had potatoes and eggs, and a plate of chilaquiles for breakfast at Oceana, and then rented a surrey bike from Action Sports Rentals. We then pedaled around the bay. Along the way we saw sailboarders fling over waves and then stopped at a park for the kids to play.

catamaran resort video

Back at the resort we watched a demonstration featuring the hotel’s exotic parrots including vibrant macaws, beautiful cockatoos and a lilac-crowned amazon. Some of the birds talk and can say things like “hi,” “hello” and “goodbye.” The parrots are available to view outside daily between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Pacific time, depending on the weather.

We concluded the day at the resort’s Sunset Luau. Held on the shores of Mission Bay, the luaus are a festive celebration of Polynesian food, music and dances perfect for family and friends. The party begins with a lei with real flowers and a delicious Mai Tai. This was followed by an all-you-can-eat buffet with Hawaiian-inspired rice and salads and various succulent meats including pork, chicken and fish.

catamaran resort video

Local luau group Pride of Polynesia provided authentic island music and dance featuring hula and fiery torch dancers. Kids also got a chance to hula dance and participate in activities at the Kids Corner where they made flowered leis, festive crafts, colored and played with stick-on tattoos.

January 8, 2000 Russia's Forces Suspend Attack Against Grozny By MICHAEL R. GORDON OZDOK, Russia, Jan. 7 -- Confronted with fierce rebel resistance, rising casualties and bad weather, the Russian military announced today that it was suspending its assault on the Chechen capital, Grozny. Lt. Gen. Gennadi N. Troshev, deputy commander of the Russian troops fighting in the separatist region of Chechnya, said the pause was intended to allow the thousands of civilians still trapped in Grozny to escape from the fighting. He did not say how long it would last. The Associated Press Russian soldiers at the entrance to Grozny removed concrete block letters spelling Dzhokhar on Friday. That is the name Chechen separatists have given to the capital, in honor of Dzhokhar Dudayev, the first president of the breakaway republic, who was killed in 1996 during the previous war. The military also announced a shake-up of the top command. Though the orders were issued locally, the likelihood was that they had been at least coordinated with Vladimir V. Putin, Russia's new acting president. Popular support in Russia for the campaign in Chechnya was a central factor in Mr. Putin's rapid rise from his position as an obscure new prime minister to acting president and front-runner in Russia's presidential race. There has been no sign that this support is waning, but there has been widespread speculation that rising casualties or continued setbacks could start to erode it. The suspension of attacks on Grozny marks an abrupt change for Russia's generals, who had vowed to make short work of the militants. Just last week, Col. Gen. Valery L. Manilov, deputy chief of the General Staff, predicted that the capital would be seized in a matter of days. But with Chechnya covered by a dense fog, the Russians have been unable to use artillery and air power, which are vital to the operation to seize Grozny. Russian commanders have also been surprised by the stubborn rebel resistance, and may have been forced to rethink their tactics. "We will also use this as a short break for our personnel," General Troshev said. "We will regroup, and when we feel that the civilians have left Grozny, we will inflict a resolute and final blow against the militants who sit in Grozny." In a separate announcement, the army said Maj. Gen. Vladimir A. Shamanov, a swaggering and contentious commander, had been removed as the leader of the Western Group of Russian forces, which is fighting in the southern foothills of Chechnya. General Shamanov declared last year that there would be mass resignations and possibly even civil war if the Kremlin sought to halt the military campaign in Chechnya. Though such hawkish views on Chechnya are shared by many civilians, his open challenge to Russian political leaders was unusual for a nation in which the military has generally stayed out of politics. Human rights advocates have also charged that General Shamanov's troops looted homes in the Chechen town of Alkhan-Yurt and executed civilians who tried to stop them. Russian prosecutors are investigating the episode, which became an international embarrassment. There had been reports that General Shamanov might be retired. Instead, he was among the Russian commanders in Chechnya who were decorated with "Hero of Russia," the highest military award. Now, however, he appears to have been sidelined and will return to his duties as commander of the 58th Army, which is deployed in Vladikavkaz, west of Chechnya. "His political activity went beyond the role outlined in the constitution for the army, and Alkhan-Yurt was the last straw," said Yevgeny Krutikov, a correspondent for the Russian newspaper Izvestia. General Shamanov was replaced as commander of the Western Group by his deputy, Maj. Gen. Aleksei I. Verbitsky. General Troshev, who announced the suspension, also said he himself would be replaced as commander of the Eastern Group of Russian Forces in Chechnya, which is fighting in the Chechen highlands. He said he would be replaced by his deputy, Maj. Gen. Sergei A. Makarov, and would concentrate on his other duties as deputy commander of the forces in the North Caucasus region. Russian troops began the war three months ago by sweeping through the northern plains and then steadily advancing in the lowlands. The street fighting in the capital, however, has proved more difficult. When Russia forces began their assault on Grozny on Dec. 26, their plan was to surround the rebels in the city and pound them with artillery to weaken their resistance. Then Russian Interior Ministry troops and commandos were to move through Grozny house by house to ensure that they were free of rebels. But the plan quickly ran into problems. The artillery destroyed many of Grozny's buildings but not the cellars in which the rebels hid. The Russian military has generally shied away from carrying out more powerful airstrikes, fearing that they would kill many of the tens of thousands of civilians believed to be trapped in the city. Russian soldiers have also been vulnerable to ambushes and snipers, and their casualty rate is climbing. Adding to their problems, a thick fog has rolled in and prevented the Russians from conducting bombing strikes -- the base here at Mozdok has been a major staging area for the strikes -- or making effective use of their artillery. Instead of occupying the city's center, Russian forces have been battling groups of rebels on the outskirts as the rebels try to break out of the Russian encirclement. The dour mood was summed up by a situation report issued by the command here today. It bluntly said the situation in Chechnya "continues to remain complicated and tense." In announcing the suspension of the bombardment of Grozny, General Troshev insisted that the evacuation of the city's civilians was urgent, charging that the militants had blown up several tanks of chlorine to poison the air and thwart the Russian attack. "When an enemy is encircled, they will resort to anything," he said. "All they want to do is inflict greater casualties on us without thinking about the future of Grozny and Chechnya. Grozny has officially been declared today a zone of ecological danger." But new tactics for taking Grozny seemed to be emerging. General Troshev implied that the civilians needed to leave so as to provide the Russian forces with an even freer hand in making punishing artillery and air strikes against the city. The general said leaflets were being dropped to encourage the frightened population of Grozny to leave. The Russian military has scored some successes. Commanders say, for instance, that they have surrounded the town of Vedeno, the hometown of Shamil Basayev, one of the main rebel leaders. General Troshev said most of the rebels were in the mountains, along with Mr. Basayev, the rebel fighter Kattab, who was born in the Middle East, and Aslan Maskhadov, the Chechen president. Only 500 to 1,000 rebels are still in Grozny, he said. With winter and one of the densest fogs in years settling in, however, the Russian military is afraid of becoming mired in the fighting in Grozny and the highlands. It also faces possible guerrilla attacks behind its lines. Underscoring the difficulty of the military's mission, General Troshev began his news conference today by saying he would not discuss Russian casualties. "Don't ask me about losses," he cautioned. "Every loss is a tragedy. Let the analysts talk about this."
