Glory: Steve Kozloff’s 170m triple masted yacht concept unveiled

US yacht designer Steve Kozloff has lifted the lid on Glory, a new superyacht concept that comes complete with an aircraft hangar, submersible storage and a set of three tilting masts.

Fitted with Solid Sail System, the masts are groundbreaking in their ability to set their own sails, rotate a full 380 degrees and tilt forward 70 degrees to reduce drag and allow the yacht to pass under high bridges.

While Glory is a superyacht first and foremost, she has been designed with scientific research in mind. To this end, she will be able to cruise in polar regions thanks to an ice-classed hull and heated masts, handrails and doors that prevent icing.

A pair of cranes will help load and off-load research equipment and a large tender garage offers storage for tour tenders and two Nemo U-Boat Worx submarines with a dedicated launch system to allow easy access to the depths of the sea.

The aircraft hangar covers an area of 620 square metres and boasts a unique elevating and gyro stabilised landing pad. This can accommodate up to two helicopters or three eVTOLs.

The yacht has a wide range of top-class amenities spread across her five decks, including a 450 square metre owner’s suite and two master suites. In total, Glory can accommodate 26 guests and a crew of 40.

Interiors feature curved walls, plenty of windows and a wide variety of entertaining spaces including a marble-clad piano bar.

The stern boasts an intimate viewing platform, while the upper deck features a six by 12 metre swimming pool.

The Solid Sail system also features integrated load sensing technology that informs the captain how much to drive sailing rigs.

She can cruise at 14 knots for 6700 nautical miles with diesel power only. Under sail power only, she can make 12 knots.

This comes after Kozloff unveiled a 160 metre superyacht concept named Galleon in June 2021 .

Steve Kozloff Lifts Lid on 170m Triple Masted Yacht Concept

By Heather Collier

Renowned US yacht designer Steve Kozloff has unveiled Glory, an innovative, new superyacht concept that comes complete with an aircraft hangar, submersible storage and a set of three tilting masts.

After unveiling his 160 metre superyacht concept Galleon in June 2021, it appears Kozloff has decided to push the boundaries even further.

Newly released renders show the vessel is fitted with Solid Sail System which features integrated load sensing technology that informs the captain how much to drive sailing rigs.

The three masts are groundbreaking in their ability to set their own sails, rotate a full 380 degrees and tilt forward 70 degrees to reduce drag and allow the yacht to pass under high bridges, something that is continually a challenge for modern day luxury vessels.

This model comes after the ice-class explorer Elegante and Arctic Owl as part in his Goliath Series.

While Glory is a superyacht first and foremost, she is ultimately an explorer, and has been designed with scientific research and adventure in mind. Fit with an ice-classed hull and heated masts, handrails and doors that prevent icing, she will be able to cruise in polar regions for scientific exploration.

Her pair of cranes will help load and off-load all research equipment, and a large tender garage offers storage for tour tenders and two Nemo U-Boat Worx submarines with a dedicated launch system to allow easy access to deeper levels of the sea.

In conjunction with this, her aircraft hangar covers 620 sqm and boasts a unique elevating and gyro stabilised landing pad which can accommodate up to two helicopters or three eVTOLs.

Glory also features a series of top-class amenities spread across her five decks, including a 450 sqm owner’s suite and two master suites. She can accommodate up to 26 guests and 40 crew members, with spacious VIP areas to indulge in.

Her interiors feature futuristic curved walls, an abundance of stylish windows and a wide variety of entertaining spaces including a marble-clad piano bar.

Guests can enjoy panoramic views of the water from her intimate viewing platform at the stern, while the Upper Deck features a 6 by 12 metre swimming pool.

Equipped with a 6,000 hp hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, she can cruise at 14 knots for 6700 nautical miles with diesel power only, with a top speed of 17 knots. Under sail power only, she can reach 12 knots.

Framed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, Glory appears to be the perfect explorer vessel; intended for the most wild, untouched corners of the ocean.

Concept: 170m sailing superyacht Glory

Hey! Quite a long time ago, we noticed an interesting trend - among the great variety of superyachts, there will always be a couple of giant sailboats. Huge and majestic ships, which are unlikely to become anything more than a monument to human genius, do not cease to arouse admiration. Among them is the sailing superyacht Glory by renowned designer Steve Kozloff.

New concept

Californian designer Steve Kozloff recently unveiled the concept of a sailing superyacht called Glory. One of the features is an innovative mast control system. The new 558ft (170m) yacht is the latest addition to Kozloff's Goliath Series of foldable yachts.

Among other things, an interesting Elegante model was noted in this line. Recall that Elegante was introduced back in December last year.

Masts, sails...

To set such a colossus in motion, powerful masts and reliable sails are needed. Another feature of the yacht should be the new Solid Sail system. The system was developed by the French company Chantiers de L'Atlantique. It has many advantages over the traditional system, says Kozloff.

Thanks to the Solid Sail system, the masts can tilt forward by 70 degrees, which allows the height of the yacht to be reduced from 237 feet (72 m) to 134 feet (41 m). This will allow Glory to pass under most bridges. Each mast can also rotate 360 degrees to make the most of the power of the wind.

The system also offers software-based sail monitoring - a huge number of sensors are built into both the masts and the sails. This will allow the skipper to determine exactly how best to distribute the load on the sails and which course is best to enter.

Hull and ride characteristics Glory

The Glory board is also stable and reliable. The hull will meet the standards of expeditionary vessels, and the superstructure will be made of aluminum. Glory will be used for truly long journeys.

The superyacht is also equipped with a 6,000 hp hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system. She will provide a top speed of 17 knots and a range of 6,709 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 14 knots.

With 30,000 square feet (2,800 square meters) of sail, the Glory will reportedly be able to reach speeds of 12 knots. Of course, engines and sails can work simultaneously to increase range and speed.

Internal organization

The five-deck yacht can accommodate up to 26 guests and 40 crew members. The most impressive of the cabins is, of course, the master cabin. Its area is about 1,500 square feet (139 square meters). Another highlight is the chic piano bar on the upper deck, finished with exquisite Italian TB Marmi marble.

Glory is also equipped with a huge aircraft hangar and a gyro-stabilized landing pad that can accommodate up to two helicopters or three eVTOLs. In addition, the yacht's full-beam garage can store four tenders, two Nemo U-Boat Worx and other "toys", while two large cranes will help load and unload food and equipment. To top it off, the yacht has a large pool on the upper deck and a beach club with retractable decks aft.

The owner of the yacht is Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The yacht’s construction cost more than $600m. The name of the yacht, Azzam, means determination in Arabic.

The exterior design of the yacht was provided by Nauta Design, while interior design was by Christophe Leoni. Fr. Lurssen Werft was responsible for the engineering and construction of the Azzam superyacht. Technical engineering activities were carried out under the leadership of Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi.

Development of the world’s largest superyacht

The yacht was transferred from her original dock at Lurssen Shipyard, measuring 170m, to a larger dock, measuring 220m, in May 2012. Steel cutting for the yacht was held in late 2009.

The yacht successfully completed sea trials in June 2013, prior to its commissioning.

Dimensions of the superyacht

The Azzam measures 180m long, and has a beam of 20.8m and a maximum draft of 4.3m. The hull of the world’s larget yacht is made of steel.

The yacht is larger than the Eclipse by 17.2m. The Eclipse, which was commissioned in 2010, is owned by billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Azzam superyacht has a gross tonnage capacity of approximately 14,000t and features a fuel tank with a capacity of one million litres.

Its main salon measures 29m in length, with its beam measuring 18m. The salon on-board the yacht has an open space featuring no support pillars. The yacht features approximately 50 suites with no large open spaces on the deck, with the interior design of the vessel incorporating the Empire Style.

Azzam superyacht layout and facilities

The interior design of the yacht is highly confidential, but initial photo releases suggest that it features six decks. The rear view of the vessel also suggests that it is powered by jets.

The yacht is capable of providing accommodation facilities for at least 50 professional crew members. Similar to other yachts constructed by Lurssen, Azzam is environment-friendly with decreased carbon dioxide, noise and soot emissions, as well as enhanced fuel-efficiency.

Azzam is also believed to include facilities to use waste heat from the engine to operate the yacht’s desalination system for drinking water. Lurssen has been lauded for being the first yacht-builder to implement this system.

Engine details

The yacht features two gas turbines and two diesel engines with a rated power output of 23,500hp. The yacht can sail at a maximum speed of 30k.

Rainsford Mann Design unveils 170m
"The appointment of Rainsford Mann Design to design a truly spectacular new yacht for a corporate syndicate has resulted in one of the most incredible projects in the marine environment today.

Conceived in 2003, the 170m length and 24m beam of this vessel will make her the largest private superyacht on the planet when she is launched. Her 30m height will dominate her surroundings, but with an elegance that is to be expected in this sector of the market.

Striking styling defies the sheer scale of this yacht. Within fine lines normally attributed to vessels a fraction of the size, Rainsford Mann Design have laid out seven decks to provide living quarters on a phenomenal scale. A central atrium serviced by two full height glass lifts will connect the decks, allowing easy movement between accommodation and living areas.

Guests will be accommodated in a number of ways, starting with 40m2 cabins which make up a number of the uniquely decorated berths, and culminating in the mind-boggling 180m2 owner’s suite forward. A personal glass lift from a private drive-in garage at the waterline will allow immediate access directly to the sanctuary while elsewhere, split-level suites will offer incredible views and spacious floor plans more usually seen in central city apartments.

The owner’s suite, which will occupy an entire deck, comprises four bedrooms, all with en suite his-and-hers bathrooms, as well as five walk-in wardrobes, two offices, a dining room and a private owner’s gymnasium. In addition to this, the guest accommodation will cater for up to 35 guests.

Great care and attention has been lavished on the design of the opulent interior, with provision for every conceivable luxury. Amongst the exceptional open spaces will nestle a cinema, a private spa and sports centre, which will include an indoor swimming pool capable of draining its 120m3 of water in ten minutes prior to the vessel raising anchor. The yacht’s communication suite will allow international business to be conducted on board (if absolutely necessary), allowing guests long periods aboard without having to head back to the office.

Crew accommodation on the two lower decks will allow for 45 crew with a capacity for up to 65 for special events. The crew quarters will be well considered, with firsthand experience playing a vital role in its design. A private officer’s mess with en suite cabins and a crew bathing platform have all been carefully detailed to ensure the smooth running of the yacht and a positive working atmosphere on board. Crew will have access to a separate gymnasium allowing fitness levels to be maintained while a separate crew galley supplying provisions around the clock will allow efficient rotation of crew watches while the owner is in residence or the yacht is on passage. The crew will also have their own dedicated Internet suite, allowing them to keep in touch with the outside world in their spare time.

The sixth and highest deck will provide a sumptuous horizon lounge and sundeck with three bars, while the foredeck will sport a 15m jet-stream pool as well as a spa pool that will seat up to ten people at a time.

Diving is seen to be an essential part of the relaxation process and several different areas will be dedicated to this pleasure. The main dining room can be used for formal occasions, or opened up to the aft deck for a more relaxed approach, and guests can also choose from a number of more secluded open and covered areas that encompass a piano bar and themed zones. A special request was made for the provision of a walk-in humidor that will allow guests to smoke some of the finest cigars available. There will also be a cellar stocked with the finest vintages by a personal supplier. This, along with a galley area that will have some of the most modern appliances in the world, and cater for nearly every style of cuisine available will ensure that the gastronomic experience is of the highest quality. It is the owner’s wish to invite aboard guest chefs from the places the yacht will visit to prepare food for the guests, so the specification for this area had to be second to none.

Other entertainment facilities include a dance floor, a virtual golf range modelled on one of 20 courses worldwide, a wet and dry spa and a fully stocked library with over 1,000 books and other media to encourage quieter relaxation.

The massive tender garage will combine a drive-in flooded dock with dry storage to accommodate up to five tenders as well as a mini submarine.

Four side opening garage doors provide quick access for water toys such as jet-skis and two ski boats.

The helipad forward will enable quests to arrive by private helicopter while still allowing the owner’s helicopter to disappear into a concealed hangar with access directly adjoining the owner’s private quarters.

The provision systems on board are designed to offer comfortable trans-global cruising in all conditions with static positioning systems ensuring reliable zero speed stability. The ability to remain positioned in one location without the use of anchors will allow the yacht to rest in areas where the sea bed is of a sensitive nature, for example, near coral reefs, where guests can take advantage of fantastic diving opportunities.

Propulsion systems are being developed in association with one of the world’s major manufacturers, and will combine diesel and gas power plants with pod style drives, allowing excellent manoeuvrability, economy and cruising flexibility. This design will also allow efficient use of internal space.

Energy efficiency goals will ensure a low heat signature and carbon rating which, along with a ‘Clean Seas’ policy that utilises the latest technology for reduction of emissions and waste products, will reduce the environmental impact of this phenomenal vessel. The yacht is also designed to comply fully with SOLAS regulations.

Rainsford Mann Design are currently carrying out conceptual design studies defining a variety of alternative use options for the interior, including corporate considerations. Plans are for the first steel for the keel to be laid in mid-2006.
