In early 1980, the Club received a letter from Buckingham Palace stating that His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh had accepted the Club's invitation to become Commodore-in-Chief of Sandringham Yacht Club. Sandringham Yacht Club opened its stunning new clubhouse to rapturous applause in July. The new clubhouse stands on the site of the old carpark and is closer to the marina, and to the yacht-racing action on Port Phillip Bay. Built at a cost of $12.75 million, the new facility replaces the old clubhouse which has stood since 1956.

Sandringham Yacht Club will host the 2024 Tasar World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. This hugely popular and highly competitive class will be taking to the waters of Port Phillip from 28 to 31 December 2023 for the Australian National Championships and will follow this up with the main event - their World Championship from 2 to 9 January 2024.
