New Models 2023: Motor Yachts – International

Part three of YACHT STYLE’s annual ‘New Models’ feature covers the year’s premieres from leading international luxury motor yacht and powercat builders.

Galeon 560 Fly

MOTOR YACHTS: INTERNATIONAL

Galeon is having another exciting year for new models, having launched the 375 GTO and flagship 800 Fly last year.

This year, the Polish builder held the world premieres of its 440 Fly and 560 Fly at the Miami International Boat Show and showed them at the Cannes Yachting Festival, with both models integrating the same drop-down sides seen on flybridge sisters like the 400, 500 and 640.

Galeon 440 Fly

In the three-cabin 560, the saloon can open on both sides, to port for a waterside bar and fully to starboard, where the interior dining area can be converted into alfresco dining with sea views over the fold-down balcony.

The three-cabin 440 has a much larger saloon than the 400, with sofas on both sides, while both new Fly models feature the multi-functional cockpits, foredecks and enormous flybridges the brand is known for.

Galeon 450 HTC

Galeon has also launched the 450 HTC, a hard top coupe model set to premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show from October 25-29. Features include a high-low swim platform featuring integrated steps, a flip-up outdoor galley aft of the cockpit, a sliding cockpit bimini, an opening sunroof inside and three cabins below.

The newest model from Nimbus is the Weekender 11 (W11), which debuted at Cannes. The 41-footer is grouped with the W9 and 305 Drophead in the Swedish builder’s Day Cruiser series, but is a semi-enclosed ‘weekender’ built on the same hull as the open Tender 11 and the enclosed Commuter 11.

Fitted with twin Mercury outboards, either 300hp V8s or 400hp V10s, the yacht starts with an aft facing sofa before a covered J-shaped seating area with outdoor galley. There’s also a foredeck sunbathing area that can be covered by a bimini, and a lower deck with two double beds and a bathroom.

Swan Overshadow

Also at Cannes, Nautor Swan debuted its 43ft OverShadow, which is produced with the Shadow – the Finnish brand’s first motor yacht – at ‘Casa Shadow’ in Italy in partnership with Oversea Italy. The OverShadow is effectively the inboard version of the Shadow and features additional space below deck.

Spanish builder Tesoro debuted its T38 Powercat at Cannes, while Gulf Craft premiered its flagship power catamaran, the two-cabin SilverCat 46 Lux, at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show. Adding to the 34 (CC, HT, Lux) and 40 (CC, Lux) models in the range, the SilverCat 46 Lux is available with two 440hp inboard engines or even four 400hp outboards.

Gulf Craft Majesty 111

However, Gulf Craft’s most high-profile world premieres at this year’s Dubai show were the Majesty 111, later exhibiting at the Monaco Yacht Show, and the Nomad 101, which appeared at the Sydney International Boat Show in August.

Designed with Netherlands-based Phathom Studio, the 34m, 240GT Majesty 111 has a semi-displacement hull, enclosed skylounge, main-deck owner’s stateroom with a skylight into the flybridge plunge pool, plus five lower-deck guest cabins including a 15sqm forward VIP suite. There’s also storage for a 4m-plus tender and jet-ski, and a three-cabin crew quarters for up to six crew.

Gulf Craft Nomad 101

An extended, tri-deck version of the Nomad 95 SUV, the 130GT Nomad 101 has a new sky deck and a full-walkaround upper deck with 35sqm of exterior area and 16sqm of interior lounge space. Accommodation includes a main-deck master suite and four ensuite guest cabins on the lower deck. The yacht can carry a Williams TurboJet 325 tender and two three-seater jet-skis.

Aquila has released two new models this year, starting with the 42 Yacht, which had its world premiere at Miami and had its European debut at Cannes.

The new entry model for the powercat leader’s Yacht range of flybridge models including the 44, 54 and flagship 70, the 42 Yacht retains brand signatures like large outdoor areas, a cockpit bar and flybridge-foredeck steps, while introducing new cabin options below deck and a new swinging hammock off the tender crane.

Aquila’s second new model is the 47 Molokai, set to debut at Fort Lauderdale and reputed to have a top speed over 50 knots. Following the 28 Molokai, the 47 Molokai is the second model in the brand’s Offshore series of fishing boats. Boasting an overall length of 49ft 4in, the ‘Big Kahuna’ has a 45ft 8in, double-stepped hull, which helps reduce drag and improve handling and stability, while its bulkheads are in carbon-fibre.

Leopard 40 Powercat

Like Aquila, Leopard had a major premiere at Miami, with the new 40 Powercat completing the brand’s new-look family of powercats, which also includes the 46 and flagship 53, all by Simonis Voogd Design and built in Cape Town, South Africa.

The 40 Powercat features what Leopard describes as the largest flybridge ever seen on a 40-footer,  while other exterior spaces include the transoms, aft cockpit and foredeck sunpads. The foredeck is accessible by the side decks or through the forward saloon door, a brand signature since 2010. A full-length en-suite owner’s cabin occupies the starboard hull, while to port are two guest cabins and a shared bathroom.

70 Sunreef Power

Poland’s Sunreef Yachts is enjoying another spectacular year for new models and hosted three world premieres at Cannes, comprising the 70 Eco sailing cat in Port Canto and two powercats in Vieux Port. One of them was the 70 Sunreef Power, which joins the 60 and 80 models in the builder’s standard range of luxury powercats.

The 80 Sunreef Power Eco – based on the 80 Sunreef Power – was arguably the most exciting of the builder’s premieres as it’s the first powercat from the Eco range to be displayed at a major boat show, although the yacht on show in Cannes and Monaco is the model’s third unit (hull two, Sol , appeared on the cover of Issue 72).

The first 60 Sunreef Power Eco is also expected to launch this year. All Eco models feature Sunreef’s in-house ‘solar skin’ – which is less than 1mm thick – integrated into the hulls, superstructure and bimini roof, as well as an ultralight battery bank.

This beautiful 1993 Super Van Craft 1380, fitted with great twin MAN diesel engines offering excellent fuel economy at cruising speed, is available for immediate handover. She offers incredible living and socializing space inside and out, having benefited from a major refit in 2017, which included:

• Hull paintwork cleaned and minor repairs made.
• Repainted grey rub bar.
• All brightwork sanded to bare wood, repaired where needed, and revarnished.
• Full engine service, including all new filters.
• New seawater pumps fitted.
• Stripped and serviced fuel pumps.
• Water strainers replaced with new bronze and glass strainers.
• Cleaned and flushed fuel tanks.
• New 24v batteries (x6).
• New 4-man life raft with custom-made mount and rear bracket.
• New Lofrans windlass with helm control switch and 30m anchor chain.
• All new skin fittings: stern gear and steering gear serviced.
• Bow thruster serviced, including new seals.
• New stainless steel radar arch made and fitted for radome, anemometer, AIS aerial, and VHF aerial.
• JABSCO searchlight added.
• New TV aerial mounted to the arch.
• Teak console made and fitted for all instruments, including Garmin, plus new VDO engine instruments.

Navigation has been upgraded to all new Garmin equipment, including log, depth, wind, AIS, radar, and chart plotter. The upgrades include:

• Garmin GPDMAP 1223xsv Chart plotter.
• GMR18HD radar.
• Garmin 315i DSC VHF.
• Garmin AIS transceiver.
• Garmin wired log, depth, and wind.

MALAIKA has been our first boat, and one that we have truly loved. Over the past four years, we have covered 2,300 nautical miles around the coast, including trips to the Isle of Wight, Solent, Littlehampton, The Hamble, Eastbourne, central London, and several journeys to Southwold and Ipswich. She is easily manageable by the two of us, and thanks to her twin engines, bow thruster, and easy handling, she is often taken out solo. Bear in mind, we started as complete novices! The previous owner kept her as a liveaboard in St Katharine Docks, but we wanted to spend more time at sea, so we undertook a significant upgrade of the navigation, safety equipment, and instrumentation in 2022. We frequently entertain on board—she has a great galley and outdoor space—and she always attracts a lot of attention in any marina.

'Long Tally Of Errors' Could Lead To Manslaughter Charges In Deadly Billionaire Yacht Sinking

Seven people died when a strong storm sank the bayesian superyacht.

The 184-foot the Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily Monday, taking seven people down with it including a billionaire tech CEO and his young daughter. What may seem like a tragic act of God might actually be the result of a string of very bad decisions, and Italian officials are investigating the sinking now as a suspicious act.

To be clear, there suspicion is not based on Mike Lynch’s recent win in court on fraud charges , which the yacht trip was meant to celebrate . A witness who testified in Lynch’s defense and Lynch’s lawyer and their families were also aboard the yacht and made up the majority of the victims. What the police are interested in are the choices of the crew aboard the Bayesian superyacht. From Daily Beast :

Authorities are now probing whether Lynch, her father, and five other deceased victims, including Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, could have been saved if not for a chain of human errors in advance of the disastrous shipwreck. According to the Italian newspaper la Repubblica , investigators are looking at how the Bayesian’s crew responded to worsening sea conditions before the 180-ft sailing vessel sank in little more than a minute at 4:06 a.m. in the early hours of Monday. The paper reported that the vessel’s captain, James Cutfield, was heard repeating “we didn’t see the storm coming” when he was treated in hospital after the shipwreck. However, la Repubblica reported that investigators have reviewed Automatic identification system (AIS) data that, along with witness interviews, suggests the crew had over 15 minutes to plan for and respond to the inclement weather, including rising wind and waves. “It was a fast but progressive worsening of the sea and wind conditions,” one source told the paper. The superyacht became unmoored and was overwhelmed by 100-mile-per-hour wind gusts. “Everything that was done reveals a very long tally of errors,” Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of Italian Sea Group, which owns the shipyard where the Bayesian was built, told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera . “The passengers should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And why didn’t the crew know about the incoming storm?”
