Which sailing yacht is owned by a Russian billionaire?

Sailing Yacht A is a sailing yacht launched in 2015. The vessel is a sail-assisted motor yacht designed by Philippe Starck (exteriors and interiors) and built by Nobiskrug in Kiel, Germany for the Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.

Its propulsion consists of a variable-speed hybrid powerplant with two lineshaft controllable-pitch propellers that is sail-assisted by a three-mast fore-and-aft sailing rig. The freestanding carbonfiber rotating masts were manufactured by Magma Structures at Trafalgar Wharf, Portsmouth. Doyle Sailmakers USA manufactured the three fully automated carbonfiber/taffeta full roach sails. The furling booms were built in Valencia by Future Fibres. The rigging of the yacht was developed partially to be implemented on cargo ships and for commercial use. The vessel features an underwater observation pod in the keel with 30cm (12in)-thick glass. It is the largest private sail-assisted motor yacht in the world.

Sailing Yacht A was delivered by Nobiskrug on 3 February 2017, and left Kiel on 5 February 2017. It exited the Baltic Sea in light mode on near-empty fuel tanks in order to clear the Drogden Strait with minimum draught. It underwent final sea trials and the final fit-out at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena, Spain. Boat International called it “the boundary pushing superyacht”. The yacht is owned by Melnichenko through Valla Yachts Ltd. of Bermuda, and was initially registered there at Hamilton. In December 2021 the yacht was moved to the Isle of Man flag and registered at Douglas.

Who owns the $1.5 billion dollar yacht?

2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion). In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the world’s second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdom’s sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield, and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the ocean’s surface.

1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion). History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysia’s richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-karat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. If you see it somewhere, let us know.

This is why people like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos work to keep their yachts out of the public eye. Though we are not including Jeff Bezos’s yacht, Koru (Maori for “coil”), in this list because it is a sailing yacht and thus excluded from the realm of these motor yachts, it created controversy in the Netherlands when its presence became known. Jeff Bezos’s abided the $500 million price tag of Oceanco, the Dutch custom yacht builder, to create the 417-foot megayacht. But when the company, at Bezos’s behest, requested that a local bridge be dismantled to make way for its gigantic mast on its journey from the shipyard, public sentiment turned against the cento-billionaire, and Oceano shelved its request. Maybe a port like Monaco would be more accommodating?

How did John Staluppi make his money?

How did John Staluppi make his money?

Just like the cars he adores and the boats he builds, John Staluppi is a walking, talking embodiment of the ‘American dream’. Starting out as a petrol station mechanic in Brooklyn, Staluppi built a billion dollar business of car dealerships, before turning his hand to creating some of the most iconic superyachts ever built.

We meet at Staluppi’s offices in North Palm Beach, Florida, but – apropos the man – this is no ordinary office building. The shopping mall on US Highway 1 looks innocuous from the outside, but once you’re buzzed in through the front door you enter a dreamscape. The building is home to Staluppi’s classic car collection and museum Cars of Dreams. The cars were arranged in a Brooklyn, circa-1960s, scene, complete with drive-in and merry-go-round. Yes, that’s a merry-go-round. A big one. It’s quiet: the museum is only open three or four times a year for charity events; Shop with a Cop, Hospice Foundation of America and American Heart Association are those that benefit.

Staluppi arrives, dressed casually in a blue open-necked shirt and jeans; burger, fries and shakes are delivered to eat in the museum’s ‘diner scene’ and we settle down to talk.

Its evolution includes brand new and upgraded accommodations and new state-of-the-art facilities. What remains the same is the resort’s relaxed luxury setting, personalized service, five stellar beaches and hundreds of acres of unspoiled tropical island.

“After over six years, we are excited to raise the curtain on Peter Island Resort’s transformation to a new level of luxury,” states David Van Andel, President, Peter Island Resort. “Our evolved and re-imagined private island hideaway will welcome guests with the same warm, Caribbean hospitality, casual elegance and natural tropical wonders that have captivated visitors for decades. Peter Island Resort & Spa to Reopen in December 2021!

January 26th, 2020

Peter Island Resort BVI Construction

For all the fans of the Peter Island Resort & Spa, we finally have long-awaited news regarding the reopening of the resort. Since hurricane Irma destroyed the resort in 2017, information about what is happening with the rebuild and when the resort be operational has been extremely hard to come by. We now have a date, but limited details on specifically what the rebuilt Peter Island Resort will look like.

The BVI Government announced this week that on January 21, 2020 an agreement was signed by Premier Andrew Fahie and David Van Andel, director of the resort, on behalf of Peter Island (2000) Limited, for the redevelopment of the property.

Upon completion, the resort is expected to have 52 rooms and suites as well as three villas. It appears, however, that the rebuild will be done in phases as the press release stated that the reopening of the “hotel’s main sections” will be done in December 2021.

BVI Traveller will continue to keep you updated as more news becomes available, but for now this is all great news for all those who know, love and have visited Peter Island!

In the main lodge, you’ll find everything from sumptuous breakfast buffets to surf-and-turf dinners at the Drake Steakhouse, a new restaurant concept courtesy of Frank Sham, the property’s new executive chef. Outside, complimentary snacks will be served every afternoon at the new infinity pool overlooking the bay. Meanwhile, butlers will service the beach cabanas. In addition to offering an array of pool and beach-based activities, the resort has also invested in a new recreational area where guests can burn calories (for cocktails) playing basketball, bocce ball, and pickleball.

The Falcon's nest at Peter Island in the BVIs

That said, the island’s biggest celebrity, according to Peter Island Resort’s president David Van Andel, is its longtime ambassador, Miss Jean Kelly.

“See if you can keep up with her dancing,” Van Andel tells Robb Report . While he won’t divulge how much the resort’s renovations cost, Van Andel recommends guests start their stay with a run around the property’s five-mile loop. “It’s not for the faint of heart,” he said, “and you won’t forget the ‘hill.’”

In lieu of regular rooms and one-bedroom suites, guests who value Insta-worthy vistas over easy beach access can always book the resort’s luxurious mountain-top Falcon’s Nest villa (rates from $11,640 per night). Completely rebuilt to give off more contemporary vibes, it’s still the best spot on the island for 360-degree panoramic views of the Virgin Islands. The Hawk’s Nest villa (rates from $5,645 per night) is also being redecorated and upgraded.

And because future hurricanes are as inevitable as the tide, the villas and all new resort structures are being built to the Miami Dade High Velocity Hurricane Zone guidelines.

Reopening following its rebuild and reimagination after the 2017 hurricane season, Peter Island Resort is set to emerge from its six-year transformation this year.

A six-year rebuild

On reopening in 2024, Peter Island Resort will unveil brand-new upgraded accommodation and state-of-the-art facilities now occupying the island set apart by its five beaches and unspoiled tropical interior.

“After over six years, we are excited to raise the curtain on Peter Island Resort’s transformation to a new level of luxury,” said David Van Andel, President, Peter Island Resort.

“Our evolved and reimagined private island hideaway will welcome guests with the same warm, Caribbean hospitality, casual elegance and natural tropical wonders that have captivated visitors for decades. For generations we have been honoured stewards of Peter Island and we look forward to sharing our revitalised Caribbean treasure once again in 2024.”

A revitalised island hideaway

The resort will reopen with 52 accommodation options, spanning rooms, suites and villas, including the luxurious Falcons Nest villa with 360-degree views from its elevated mountain setting. This accommodation will be joined by two restaurants: The Drake Steakhouse on Deadman’s Beach, and the Drunken Pelican at the resort’s Yacht Club.

A highlight of the property is its new Yacht Club featuring a marina for vessels of up to 200 ft. This venue in Sprat Bay encompasses a dedicated swimming pool for Yacht Club guests, and sports recreation area with pickleball, basketball and bocce ball courts, as well as the Drunken Pelican restaurant and bar.

The resort’s sprawling spa, known for its views over Big Reef Bay, has also been reimagined, with seven treatment rooms, relaxation lounges, a fitness centre, spa boutique and beauty salon, as well as a saltwater pool, al fresco relaxation areas and an outdoor hot tub.

Events will also be hosted on the island, with space for up to 180 people in a new 3,000 sq ft oceanfront conference centre flanked by two event lawns and a pre-function veranda.

  • West Michigan Foundation Watch: Steve and Amy Van Andel Foundation

Foundations are a way for members of the Capitalist Class, which made their wealth by exploiting workers, to hide some of their wealth from taxation, only to then turn around and use foundation funds to undermine social movements and generate positive PR for themselves.

“ In any case, the hidden hand of of foundations can control the course of social change and deflect anger to targets other than elite power.”

  –  Joan Roelofs, Foundations and Public Policy

Steve and Amy Van Andel Foundation

GRIID has always begun our Foundation Watch work by looking at the foundations associated with the most powerful family in West Michigan, the DeVos family. GRIID has already looked at the  Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation , the  Doug and Maria DeVos Foundation , the  Dan and Pamela DeVos Foundation , and finally the CDV5 Foundation . Last week, we also look at the other Amway fortune family, with a focus on the David and Carol Van Andel Foundation .

david van andel yacht

I am using the data from the foundation’s 990 document for 2022, which is the most recent year that is available. The Steve and Amy Van Andel Foundation has $97,836,676.00 of assets in the foundation’s account, which is just another way that members of the Capitalist Class to be able to hide their money from taxation.

Before I dive into how the Steve and Amy Van Andel Foundation distributed their funds, I wanted to point out that Steve Van Andel  is the co-chair of the board of directors of Amway, located in Ada. In addition it is important to point out that the Steve and Amy   Van Andel Foundation provided Amy Van Andel a $150,000.00 salary for being the Executive Director of the foundation, along with paying Debrah Rushlo $67,677.00 in her role as Executive Assistant.

The Steve and Amy Van Andel Foundation made contributions to dozens of entities in 2022, but there are some clear categories of groups they contributed to, such as the Religious Right, Think Tanks, Education-centered groups, and social service entities, to name a few. Below is a listing of each from these categories, with a dollar amount.

Religious Right

  • Bethel Community Education – $100,000

Think Tanks/Far Right Policy organizations

  • American Enterprise Institute – $20,000
  • The Heritage Foundation – $10,000
  • The George W Bush Foundation – $4,000,000

Education-centered groups

  • Cornerstone University – $15,000
  • Davenport University – $25,000
  • Grand Rapids University Preparatory Association – $10,000
  • Hillsdale College – $7,200,000
  • Potters House – $25,000

Van Andel-owned, created or connected groups

  • Van Andel Research Institute – $10,000
  • West Michigan Aviation Academy (DeVos run) – $50,000

Groups receiving Hush $

  • Baxter Community Center – $30,000
  • Family Promise of Grand Rapids – $50,000
  • Grand Rapids Public Museum – $100,000
  • Kids Food Basket – $50,000

One recipient of funding from the Steve and Amy Van Andel Foundation that stands out is Hillsdale College ($7.2 Million). Hillsdale College is know for being part of the larger Charter School movement that opposes Public Education and is on the advisory board of Project 2025 .

Hillsdale College has a long history of practicing and promoting far right values. The former President of Hillsdale College, George Roche, was also on the advisory board of the US affiliate of the World Anti-Communist League, according to Scott and Jon Lee Andersen’s book,  Inside the League: The Shocking Expose of How Terrorists, Nazis, and Latin American Death Squads Have Infiltrated the World Anti-Communist League.

Hillsdale College has hosted forums over the years with speakers such as Manuel Ayau, a member of Guatemala’s Amigos del Pais, a group linked to the death squads in Guatemala. Hillsdale also houses the late John Bircher Clarence Manion’s tape collection, with lectures from former Nicaraguan Dictator Anastasio Somoza Hillsdale’s magazine,  Imprimis, which  provides a forum for anti-minority views.

In another book by Russ Bellant,  The Coors Connection: How Coors Family Philanthropy Undermines Democratic Pluralism , the author writes:

“Longtime Hiilsdale President Roche is opposed in general to social engineering plans, among which he includes affirmative action and public education. Roche has attacked the Civil Rights Restoration Act as frightening federal intervention. He calls affirmative action “the putrid backwash of all the tired social engineering schemes and complains that its advocates are so hypersensitive that a school’s unwillingness to set up advanced bongo drum programs is called racist.”

Bellant goes on to say:

“The selection of contributors for Hillsdale’s monthly magazine, Imprimis, also relfects the school’s far right political views. In one issue, Gerda Bikales, a founder and former executive director of the English Only organization, US English, condemned the advocates of cultural diversity and bilingual education. She attacked the skilled language planners and other militant advocates who promote bilingual education, as well as those who aggressively pursue diversity and cultural pluralism.”

However, don’t just take the word of Bellant, even a  recent article in the New York Times  made it clear that the politics of Hillsdale College are reactionary and far right.

Because Hillsdale College does not accept federal money, they do not have to follow federal policy, like Title IX.   As a result, the college does not follow Title IX guidelines on sex discrimination and the handling of sexual assault cases and it has refused to engage in the otherwise required reporting on student race and ethnicity, let alone develop an affirmative action plan. Not surprisingly, the school’s “race blind” admissions policy results in an overwhelmingly white student body.

In 2013, Dr. Arnn was castigated by Michigan legislators when, during testimony against the Common Core, he made a remark about officials who questioned Hillsdale’s racial record. Years before, he said scornfully, Michigan officials had come to the campus with clipboards, trying to count faces and prove, he said, that the college “ didn’t have enough dark ones. ” He later issued a barbed apology: “No offense was intended by the use of that term except to the offending bureaucrats.”

The New York Times article goes on to say:

It is no coincidence that Justice Clarence Thomas, an advocate of strict “originalist” interpretation of the Constitution, delivered the commencement address last spring, likening Hillsdale to a “shining city on a hill” for its devotion to “liberty as an antecedent of government, not a benefit from government.”

david van andel yacht

On a recent episode of Doug DeVos’ podcast Believe,  GRIID provided some analysis on the comments from the current Hillsdale College President, Dr. Larry Arnn , which are here below.

The President of Hillsdale College engages in what most scholars refer to as American Exceptionalism. American Exceptionalism is the idea that the US as a country is unique and special and should be seen as a model for the rest of the world. This sentiment is reflected in the conversation between Dr. Arnn and Doug DeVos, since neither of them mention anything about the US genocidal policies directed at the First Nation’s people that lived here way before the Europeans invaded these lands.

The Hillsdale President does acknowledge slavery, but just in passing. Interestingly enough, Dr. Arnn then spends a great deal of time talking negatively about the 1619 Project, stating:

You know, the New York Times has done that frightful 1619 Project. And they claim that the movement of the founding of America from the colonies forward was in the direction of perpetuating slavery.

The President of Hillsdale College then cites Gordon Wood as the leading US Historian, so as to contradict the claims made by the 1619 Project. This theme is not really explored by DeVos or his guest, since both are not interested in a serious exploration of the more honest history that the 1619 Project explores, particularly as it related to the centuries long practice of systemic racism in the US and how it has impacted the Black community in particular.

While DeVos and his guest make backhanded comments about Critical Race Theory, they fail to mention that Hillsdale College has developed their own curriculum to counter the 1619 Project. The Hillsdale project is called  The Hillsdale 1776 Curriculum , which is a very sanitized and whitewashed version of US history.

Hillsdale College is also smack dab in the middle of the Charter School debate in the US, providing curriculum resources and a cadre of ideological apologists for far right values. In fact, a r ecent investigation by NewsChannel5 in Tennessee ,  “discovered new evidence that reveals the true Hillsdale connection, including more hidden-camera video from the reception hosted by Hillsdale president Larry Arnn for Lee.

That’s the same video where Arnn famously declared that public school teachers come from “the dumbest parts of the dumbest colleges.”

Following the release of that controversial video, three Tennessee school boards voted down applications from the Hillsdale-affiliated American Classical Education to open charter schools in their districts.

All of this is to show that, like so many other wealthy families from West Michigan, the Van Andel family has a long history of funding far right causes and institutions, like Hillsdale College. This example demonstrates once again, that philanthropic contributions are not simply charitable gifts, the foundations of wealthy families are designed to channel massive funds to promote their ideological interests.

Medieval history

Modern history, administrative and municipal status, demographics, transportation, notable people, twin towns and sister cities, external links.

Astrakhan was formerly the capital of the Khanate of Astrakhan (a remnant of the Golden Horde ) of the Astrakhan Tatars , and was located on the higher right bank of the Volga, seven miles (11   km) from the present-day city. Situated on caravan and water routes, it developed from a village into a large trading centre, before being conquered by Timur in 1395 and captured by Ivan the Terrible in 1556 and in 1558 it was moved to its present site.

The oldest economic and cultural center of the Lower Volga region, [16] it is often called the southernmost outpost of Russia, [17] and the Caspian capital. [18] [19] The city is a member of the Eurasian Regional Office of the World Organization United Cities and Local Governments . [20] The great ethnic diversity of its population gives a varied character to Astrakhan. The city is the center of the Astrakhan metropolitan area .

The name is a corruption of Hashtarkhan, itself a corruption of Haji Tarkhan ( حاجی‌ ترخان )—a name amply evidenced in the medieval writings. Tarkhan is possibly a Turco-Mongolian title standing for "great khan ", or "king", while haji or hajji is a title given to one who has made the Islamic requisite of pilgrimage to Mecca . Together, they denoted "the king who has visited Mecca". [ citation needed ] The city has given its name to the particular pelts from young karakul sheep , and in particular to the hats traditionally made from the pelts. [ citation needed ]

Colloquially, the city is known by the short form Astra . Another popular nickname is The Caspian Capital . [ citation needed ]

Astrakhan is in the Volga Delta , which is rich in sturgeon and exotic plants. The fertile area formerly contained the capitals of Khazaria and the Golden Horde . Astrakhan was first mentioned by travelers in the early 13th century as Xacitarxan . Tamerlane burnt it to the ground in 1395 during his war with the Golden Horde . From 1459 to 1556, Xacitarxan was the capital of Astrakhan Khanate by the Astrakhan Tatars . The ruins of this medieval settlement were found by archaeologists 12   km upstream from the modern-day city.

Starting in A.D. 1324, Ibn Battuta , the famous Berber Muslim traveler, began his pilgrimage from his native city of Tangier , present-day Morocco to Mecca. Along the 12,100-kilometer (7,500   mi) trek, which took nearly 29 years, Battuta came in contact with many new cultures, which he writes about in his diaries. One specific country that he passed through on his journey was the Golden Horde ruled by the descendants of Genghis Khan , located on the Volga River in southern Russia; which Battuta refers to as the river Athal. He then claims the Athal is, "one of the greatest rivers in the world". In the winter, the Khan stays in Astrakhan. Due to the cold water, Özbeg Khan ordered the people of Astrakhan to lay many bundles of hay down on the frozen river. He does this to allow the people to travel over the ice. When Battuta and the Khan spoke about Battuta visiting Constantinople, which the Khan granted him permission to do, the Khan then gifted Battuta with fifteen hundred dinars, many horses, and a dress of honor. [21] [22]

In 1556, the khanate was conquered by Ivan the Terrible , who had a new fortress, or kremlin , built on a steep hill overlooking the Volga in 1558. This year is traditionally considered to be the foundation of the modern city. [3]

In 1569, during the Russo-Turkish War , Astrakhan was besieged by the Ottomans, who had to retreat in disarray. A year later, the Ottoman sultan renounced his claims to Astrakhan, thus opening the entire Volga River to Russian traffic. [ citation needed ] The Ottoman Empire , though militarily defeated, insisted on safe passage for Muslim pilgrims and traders from Central Asia as well as the destruction of the Russian fort on the Terek River . [23] In the 17th century, the city was developed as a Russian gate to the Orient. Many merchants from Armenia , Safavid Persia , Mughal India , [24] [25] and Khivan Khanate settled in the town, giving it a cosmopolitan character.

For seventeen months in 1670–1671, Astrakhan was held by Stenka Razin and his Cossacks . Early in the following century, Peter the Great constructed a shipyard here and made Astrakhan the base for his hostilities against Persia, and later in the same century Catherine the Great accorded the city important industrial privileges. [26]

The city was held from 1707 by the Cossacks under Kondraty Bulavin during the Bulavin Rebellion until they were defeated the next year. A Kalmuck khan laid an abortive siege to the kremlin several years before that.

In 1717, it became the seat of Astrakhan Governorate , whose first governors included Artemy Petrovich Volynsky and Vasily Nikitich Tatishchev . Six years later, Astrakhan served as a base for the first Russian venture into Central Asia . In 1702, 1718 and 1767, it suffered severely from fires; in 1719 it was plundered by the Safavid Persians; and in 1830, cholera killed much of the populace. [26]

The Astrakhan Kremlin was built from the 1580s to the 1620s from bricks taken from the site of Sarai Berke . Its two impressive cathedrals were consecrated in 1700 and 1710, respectively. Built by masters from Yaroslavl , they retain many traditional features of Russian church architecture, while their exterior decoration is definitely baroque .

In March 1919 after a failed workers' revolt against Bolshevik rule, 3,000 to 5,000 people were executed in less than a week by the Cheka under orders from Sergey Kirov . Some victims had stones tied around their necks and were thrown into the Volga. [27] [28]

During Operation Barbarossa , the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the A-A line running from Astrakhan to Arkhangelsk was to be the eastern limit of German military operation and occupation. The plan was never carried out, as Germany captured neither the two cities nor Moscow . In the autumn of 1942, the region to the west of Astrakhan became one of the easternmost points in the Soviet Union reached by the invading German Wehrmacht , during Case Blue , the offensive which led to the Battle of Stalingrad . Light armored forces of German Army Group A made brief scouting missions as close as 35   km to Astrakhan before withdrawing. In the same period, elements of both the Luftwaffe 's KG 4 and KG 100 bomber wings attacked Astrakhan, flying several air raids and bombing the city's oil terminals and harbor installations.

In 1943, Astrakhan was made the seat of a Soviet oblast within the RSFSR . The oblast was retained as a national province of the independent Russian Federation in the 1991 administrative reshuffle after the dismemberment of the Soviet Union .

In the present day, Astrakhan is a large industrial centre of the Volga country, Russia, with a population of over 500,000. Starting nearly 400 years ago and continuing to the present day, Astrakhan has been Russia's main center of fish processing. The market for fish is a large component of the economy in this city. [29]

Owing to shared Caspian borders, Astrakhan recently has been playing a significant role in the relations between Russia and Azerbaijan. As the latter's government has been heavily investing into the wellbeing of the city, Astrakhan has recently begun to symbolize the friendship between both countries. In 2010 a bridge was constructed with donations from Azerbaijan, which was named "Bridge of Friendship". [30] Moreover, Azerbaijani government sponsored secondary school number 11, which carries the name of the national leader Heydar Aliyev , as well as a children's entertainment center named "Dream". [31] Apart from that, a park has been built in the center of Astrakhan which is dedicated to friendship between the two countries. In the last 5 years Astrakhan has been visited by top Azerbaijani delegations on several occasions. [32] [33] [34] [35]

After fraud was alleged in the mayoral election of 2012 and the United Russia candidate was declared the winner, organizers of the 2011–2012 Russian protests supported the defeated candidate, Oleg V. Shein of Just Russia , in a hunger strike . Protestors, buoyed by celebrities who support the reform movement, attracted 5,000 people to a rally on April 14. [36]

Astrakhan is the administrative center of the oblast . [10] Within the framework of administrative divisions , it is incorporated as the city of oblast significance of Astrakhan —an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts . [1] As a municipal division , the city of oblast significance of Astrakhan is incorporated as Astrakhan Urban Okrug . [11]

The city of Astrakhan is further subdivided into four administrative districts: Kirovsky, Leninsky, Sovetsky and Truskovsky.

Astrakhan is the archiepiscopal see of one of the metropolitanates and (as Astrakhan and Yenotayevka) eparchies of the Russian Orthodox Church , its only other suffragan being Akhtubinsk. [ citation needed ] There is also a Catholic community, served by the Church of the Assumption of Mary (Astrakhan) . There is also a substantial Muslim population made up of Astrakhan Tatars and other Muslims. [37] At 1777 the white Mosque was built, [38] and the Baku Mosque was built in 1907–1909.

According to the results of the 2021 Census, the population of Astrakhan was 475,629. [15]

At the time of the official 2021 Census, the ethnic makeup of the city's population was: [39]

The city lies on two banks of the Volga, in the upper part of the Volga Delta, on eleven islands of the Caspian Depression, 60 miles (100 km) from the Caspian Sea. At an elevation of 28 meters (92 ft) below sea level, it is the lowest city in Russia.

Astrakhan features a continental cold semi-arid climate ( Köppen climate classification : BSk ) with cold winters and hot summers. Astrakhan is one of the driest cities in Europe. Rainfall is scarce but relatively evenly distributed throughout the course of the year with, however, more precipitation (58%) in the hot season (six hottest months of the year).

The below sea-level elevation and long distance from the ocean of Astrakhan significantly influences the climate. Winters are cold with average January temperature -3.6 °С (25.5 °F). Summer temperatures in Astrakhan are one of the highest in Russia with average Jule temperature 26.1 °С (79 °F) and may reach 40 °С (104 °F) and higher. The summers are much hotter than found further west on similar latitude in Europe and worldwide for 46°N with the notable exception of the interior Pacific Northwest of the United States. [ citation needed ] The mean annual temperature amplitude (difference between the mean monthly temperatures of the hottest and coldest months) is thus equal to 29.7 °С (85.5 °F) so the climate is truly continental. Spring and fall are basically transitional seasons between summer and winter.

A Perfect Circle, Primus + Puscifer Announce 2025 North American Tour Dates

A Perfect Circle ,  Primus  and Puscifer  have teamed up once again for a tour, but this time it's an extended North American run that'll take place in 2025.

The trio of bands embarked on the first edition of the Sessanta tour this past April in celebration of Maynard James Keenan 's 60th birthday, but it was a limited run only consisting of seven dates in the western half of the U.S. Now, they've decided to bring it to the rest of the states and parts of Canada.

Keenan is going to have quite the year, as Tool just revealed a handful of performances for 2025 earlier this month as well.

"The Sessanta run was by far the most fun and delicious extended birthday party I’ve ever had thanks to all of the attendees and the master musicianship of Primus, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. No comparison. Decided we need to share this with people who missed the first round in places we couldn’t get to. Strap in," Keenan said in a social media post, which featured a clip of the singer acting out a comedy skit.

Spanning over 26 dates, the Sessanta V2.0 tour will kick off in late April in Palm Springs, California and wrap up in early June near Seattle, Washington.
