Cost of boat rental in split.

The prices for yacht charters in Split are closely tied to the weather and sailing conditions throughout the year. They tend to be at their lowest in March, corresponding to the low season, and reach their peak in July when demand is high and sailing conditions are optimal.

Split, Croatia is many sailors' dream destination. Set on the Adriatic Sea, this coastal town offers everything a European sailor may want. The spring and summer months have favorable temperatures and strong winds for sailing. Plus, the small towns around Split offer a variety of cultural experiences to enjoy during the day. Tourist sites such as Diocletian’s Palace and Peristil Square make for a memorable visit to archaic Croatia .

Split is the next frontier for sailors who have already experienced everything the Mediterranean has to offer, or who want to go off the beaten path. Croatian sailing is less about coastal relaxation and more about historic majesty and cultural immersion. 12 Knots can provide an exceptional sailing experience for you and your group.

Split is an ideal place to begin a sailing charter for all group sizes and needs. Whether you’re an experienced skipper or a beginner taking on their first major sailing trip, we can provide the creature comforts and information needed to make your trip memorable. Below is some of the most important information about Split bareboat rentals for you to start planning and booking your trip.

Sailing Conditions in Split

Split offers exceptional sailing conditions throughout the year. Temperatures range from 22-28 C in the spring, and 26-30 C in the summer. Wind speeds typically reach 10 to 20 knots with calm seas in the warmer months. The early autumn can also be an enjoyable time to sail; however, temperatures begin to drop in October, causing an increase in rainfall.

Three dominant winds determine sailing conditions in Split:

  • The Bora: This north-easterly wind brings cool weather to the Adriatic Sea and coastline
  • The Sirocco: This warm and humid wind reaches the entire Adriatic coastline at a typical speed of 16-20 knots.
  • The Maestral: This wind is strongest in the mornings with average speeds of 16-20 knots.

Best Time to Vacation in Split

Sailing in Split is best in the late spring, summer, and early fall. During these times you can expect calm seas and a warm, dry climate. Average temperatures in Croatia are favorable most of the year except for the winter months. This brings many other sailing tourists to the area, with whom you may have to compete for moorings.

The summer is the busiest time, so if you’re planning a summer sailing trip expect crowds in the cities. However, traveling to Croatia in the summer affords some of the most beautiful blue skies, warm waters, and very little rain. Regardless of the time you plan your trip, be vigilant of local weather patterns to best plan sailing times and duration.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Croatia has over 1200 islands and cities from which to start sailing, but Split is the perfect place to do so. This area is equipped for beginner sailors with plenty of mooring buoys and marinas and can offer easier conditions to sail than parts of the Mediterranean.

For beginners, sailing from May to September will offer the best conditions. Regardless of your experience level, you will want to be cautious at popular marinas due to the influx of sailors during “Yacht Week” and the official sailing season.

If you are planning to book a bareboat charter in Split, Croatia, you will need to provide a certificate of competence. These are required for all sailing vessels in the region. If you do not have such a certificate, a crewed charter will be provided, as all 12 Knots crews are certified.

Split Luxury Yacht Charter: Explore the Heart of the Adriatic

segelyacht chartern split

With Split Luxury Yacht Charter Guide we are taking you to the serene islands of the Split Archipelago, like Biševo with its famous Blue Cave, southern shores of Vis, Pakleni islands and Hvar

Split, as well as the entire Adriatic coast, is blessed by the mild Mediterranean climate, which means a lot of sun and heat, especially in the summer months, and very few cold and rainy days. Although there is a whole range of things you can do in Split throughout the year, such as the obligatory walk through the UNESCO-protected Diocletian’s Palace, if you love hubbub, parties and concerts, this enchanting city should definitely visit in the heart of the season.

In July and August, all of Split seems to be dressed summer dresses, just in time for the world-famous Ultra Europe festival (July 8-10, 2022). On the other hand, those who are into more romantic experiences will surely be delighted by the spring face of Split and the surrounding islands, which seem to wake up around Easter, as do most travel agencies, cafes and restaurants , opening their doors and welcoming first visitors.

However, it should be emphasized that for many September, and more often October, are the most desirable part of the year to visit Croatia and Split, as in pre- and post-season there are no crowds, prices are lower, and weather and sea temperatures are still pleasant for all sea-related activities.

Throughout this summer half of the year, an extremely large number of visitors decide to charter a yacht in Split because the Split area is one of the top charter destinations in Croatia .

Marinas and berths in Split archipelago

Split yacht charter is extremely popular because of the many magical surrounding destinations, but also because some of the most beautiful Croatian marinas are located in this part of the Adriatic.

ACI marina Split

split luxury yacht charter guide aci marina

The city of Split is dotted with many small, local marinas, but with 320 berths by far the most visited is ACI Marina Split (+385 (0) 98 398 850) which offers much-needed parking sports for yacht owners. In case you are looking for parking in and around ACI Marina Split, first look inside the marina.

One very attractive anchoring spot near Split is the Blue Lagoon, which is located between Veliki and Mali Krknjaš, and the much larger Veli Drvenik.

Marina Martinis Marchi

Maslinica island of Solta Split luxury yachts charter guide

ACI marina Milna

On the island of Brač , the largest nautical center is the deep Milna cove with three marinas: ACI marina Milna (+385 (0) 98 398 851) with 170 berths, Yacht club Milna (+385 (0) 91 400 04 87) with 45 berths and Marina Vlaška (+385 (0) 99 244 7410) with 70 berths. Apart from Milna, the nearby Brač Yachting Anchorage Bobovišća (+385 (0) 91 500 1619) is also becoming increasingly popular, where you can book your place on the buoy in advance.

ACI marina Palmižana

aci marina palmizana hvar charter

Pakleni islands off the coast of Hvar seem to have been created for anchoring, as was the nearby ACI Marina Palmižana (+385 (0) 21 744 995) with 180 berths. The nearby Vinogradišće cove offers the possibility of buoy berths (concessionaire Đenko Meneghello +385 (0) 91 171 82 42), and in addition to providing protection from almost all winds except the south, is locally famous for a spectacular number of excellent restaurants to visit by boat .

Anchorages on Vis island

If you are aiming towards Vis, make sure to stop at Budikovac, beloved for its turquoise lagoon whose depth rarely exceeds 2 meters. One of everyone’s favorite coves on the island is Stončica, where buoys have been set up to welcome yachts, and the same concessionaire (Gradina Vis +385 (0) 21 711 121) offers buoys in the town of Vis, where boaters have 100 berths at their disposal.

Budikovac island Vis Luxury Yacht Charter Guide

In Komiža , 30 boats can be moored on the waterfront (SDZ Port Authority +385 (0) 21 339 825), and 60 buoys have been set up in Komiža Bay (Komiža Nautical Center +385 (0) 21 713 215). Contact the Komiža Nautical Center if you decide to visit the Mezoporat cove on the island of Biševo, where 20 buoys have also been set up.

Yachting routes that pass through the Split waters are by far the most popular on the Adriatic due to the magnetic attraction of this part of the Croatian Adriatic and the fabulous pearl-like islands that surround this city – Hvar , Pakleni islands, southern coast of Vis, Blue Cave on the island of Biševo. Gather your crew, opt for Split luxury yacht charter and direct your bow to the south.

Island of Brač

Along the way, many boaters want to swerve a little toward the island of Brač and the deep Milna cove, whose Italian name valle di mille navi is due to its legendary depth and the ability to host a thousand ships. Those who want to experience the local atmosphere of a small island town can spend their first night in Bobovišće cove where most boats moor, while lovers of calm, picturesque nature can sail to the southern shores of this stunning island.

Island of Šolta

island of solta croatia

If your cruise hasn’t started in Šolta, make sure you visit the island as the icing on the cake of your Split yacht charter. This island has similar yachting attributes as the neighboring Brač, but is much smaller and isolated. On island of Šolta , the most desirable destination among boaters is Maslinica, an authentic fishing village that today shines with new splendor and is the proud home of the most beautiful Croatian boutique marina Martinis Marchi .

We also warmly recommend a visit to the picturesque town of Stomorska or the turquoise southern coves that maintain a certain wild feeling to them and are ideal for all fans of intimate lovers of more mysterious moments.

Hvar and Pakleni Islands

town hvar yacht charter

Many boaters who opt for an early check-in during their Split yacht charter immediately decide to cover about twenty-five miles and conquer Pakleni islands, and spend time exploring this enchanting archipelago counting 21 islands, islets and cliffs. Pakleni islands – which sounds like hell islands in Croatian – do not justify their name and are actually as peaceful as you can imagine, seeing how they are actually named after a wood resin – paklina – found around here.

The largest island in this archipelago is St. Clement, and with no southerly wind all of its southern coves are true oases of beauty and pleasure. Stretching west to east, the spacious Soline, the turquoise Taršće, the slightly smaller Stari Stani and the most popular Vinogradišće coves lure with their charms.

On this list is also the too popular Stipanska cove on the islet of Marinkovac, whose vibrant and loud nightlife might not be everyone’s cup of tea. In any case, St. Clement is serene, criss-crossed with trekking paths that connect all its bays and are a great opportunity for an hour or two spent in nature.

hvar pakleni islands croatia boat charter

Should you want a stronger ‘connection’ to the land, either due to unfavorable weather conditions or just in case, ACI Marina Palmižana and the northern shores of St. Clement are only a few miles away, and the mesmerizing beauties of Hvar are at your fingertips.

You can stay in this micro area of Hvar for several days, just like many local families have been doing for decades, but it would be a real shame no to go farther and get to know the entire island.

Vis and beautiful beaches

The southeastern side of Vis and a range of incredibly beautiful islands are only a dozen nautical miles away. We suggest that you first drop your anchor in Stončica, a sandy cove with turquoise water, and take a walk to the nearby lighthouse, among the beautiful in the Adriatic. In its immediate vicinity to the east lies Smokova cove, where even in the high season there aren’t too many boats, and which is known as an ideal destination for playing picigin, a highly addictive local ball game.

Later, you can visit the other sandy haven on the island – the nearby Zaglav cove, where you can indulge in a dive among the many fan mussels, allow yourself to be charmed by the surrounding turquoise or bask in the sun lying on the fine sand that this uninhabited cove is famous for. Right around the corner lies the town of Rukavac, whose northern side is covered in rocky shores, and whose much gentler southern side is a haven with white pebble beaches, like the beloved Tepluš beach. Both sides are suitable for anchoring (in the absence of southerlies) and are separated by a stone pier suitable for docking for vessels with shallow draft.

In case the weather forecast is favorable, spend the night in the turquoise lagoon that mourns the island of Budikovac. This island is a unique microcosm that doesn’t lose its peculiar character even at the peak of the yachting season. A local celebrity Andro Slavić lives in Budikovac all year round, where he has a real small ranch and a uniquely imaginative restaurant.

The next day, as soon as the sun approaches its zenith, let the magical colors of the Green Cave on the neighboring island of Ravnik spill over you. After that, visit another island delight – Srebrna beach, whose name – silver – is a misnomer, as the this cove boasts the most beautiful white pebble beach.

Sailing along the southern shores of Vis in the direction of sunset, you’ll find it hard to choose where to drop your anchor. Ruda cove lures with its almost Caribbean shades of blue, Mala and Vela Travna with imaginative configurations of rocky shores and silky miniature pebble bottoms, and the famous Stiniva is a true masterpiece of Mother Nature. This ‘cove in a cove’ is reminiscent of an exclusive pool, open 24/7 for the lucky ones.

Town Komiza Vis Luxury Yacht Charter Guide

Spend the night in the picturesque fishing village of Komiža if the sky is not frowning from the west, which is usually a sign of bad weather. Drop your anchor at the waterfront or tie your vessel to one of the many buoys, but wherever you stay, make sure you leave Komiža exactly as you found it.

Visit local beaches around Komiža, walk to the most impressive symbol of the town – the church of St. Nicholas, and if you want a unique adventure, rent a bike and conquer the steep, steep road to one of the most spectacular Adriatic lookouts, from where you’ll be able to chose where to turn your bow next. Vis luxury yacht charter is a ideal mixture of magical beaches, pristine nature and delicious local cuisine.

Biševo and Blue cave

biševo island split luxury yacht charter

You can complete your cruise with a visit to the magical Biševo island and the beautiful Blue Cave. A visit to this island some 40 miles toward the open sea almost always remains imprinted into the visitors’ minds ss one of the most beautiful memories from their Split yacht charter, which is why this very special, almost zen destination, deserves a special full-length feature.

One of the best in Croatia. Split is the largest city on the Croatian Adriatic Coast and a favourite starting point for many sailors, the main reason being its central location. This makes it an excellent base for exploring, especially the Dalmatian islands of Brač, Šolta, Hvar and Vis, but also Korčula, Pelješac and Lastovo to the south or the unique Šibenik-Kornati archipelago to the north.

With Yachts Croatia, you can charter a variety of yachts from Split, bareboat or crewed, ranging from the 10 meter motor boats like Antares 36 and popular catamarans like Sunreef 50 to over 40 meter long luxury yachts like Benetti and luxury sailing yachts like Clase Azul.

There are many things to consider when chartering a yacht, and the size of a yacht is the key factor impacting the price. In our charter section you can find motor and sailing boats, catamarans, luxury sailing yachts and luxury yachts. Through Yachts Croatia listings, a charter vacation on a yacht can range from a minimum of €16,000 per week (22 metre yacht Glorious) to a maximum of €210,000 per week (40 metre yacht Happy Me). Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

On a yacht charter from Split or Trogir you can find on all the islands and along the coast a wonderful variety of harbours, anchorages and small bays to drop anchor for a lunchtime swim. With reliable winds you can keep the sailing distances as short or as long as you like. The marinas in Croatia offer some of the best facilities in the Mediterranean but there are mooring charges for charter yachts.

Due to the popularity of this area for sailing holidays, yachts are available for charter from several marinas easily accessed from Split airport, including Trogir and Primosten.

Trogir Sailing Journal by Kali, Nautilus Yachting

Fresh from passing my day skipper, I spent quite a while umming and ahhing as to where I should take the family for our first solo sailing holiday. But when a brand new (2022) Oceanis 40.1 popped up in Trogir during the October half-term, for under £1000, it seemed almost obvious our decision was being made for us.

Croatia is a country I have never been to before, and the opportunity to visit Europe's most popular sailing area seemed too good to be true. Also after speaking with a few friends, sailing from Split offered lots of possible itineraries, including lots of sheltered ports to run from the October weather. Perfect... Split it is!

Trogir Sailing Journal by Kali, Nautilus Yachting

Day 1 - Marina Baotic

The flight to Split was noticeably shorter than my previous flights to Greece. The journey was a little under three hours, from stepping onto the plane at Heathrow to stepping onto the boat in the Marina. A swift start to the holiday. Our flight arrived late in the evening,  and thankfully rather than searching among the 500 or so yachts in the dark, the office had left a really helpful personalised note, as to exactly where our boat was moored and a number to contact just in case.

Once we had unpacked and were fed and watered,  we checked the weather for the week which seemed perfect.   Gentle and Moderate winds from the South East until Wednesday, before the winds reversed and Northerly Winds took over from Wednesday through to Friday.   Nigh on perfect weather for a gentle sail to Sibenik and back.

Marina Baotic

Day 2 - Trogir to Rogoznica (17nm)

On arrival into Rogoznica, I prepped our crew for mooring, the pilot guide on board helped select our quayside mooring point but as we approached I could see the Harbour Master prepping a spot for us. A stern too mooring spot with lazy lines. Reversing in I got my first mate ready to throw the stern line, the Harbour Master was ready to pass them a lazy line, and i was at the helm. After a tiny bit of shouting and potentially a little more panic than was required we were safely moored for our first night.

Trogir to Rogoznica (17nm)

Day 3 - Rogozniza to Primosten (6nm)

Rogoznica seemed to be one of those small towns where the number of boats outnumbers the number of houses. Fresh water and electricity at the town quay meant we could stay clear of the dubious showers. Numerous shops and bars lined the quayside and that meant we could have a lazy coffee and pastry ashore rather than cook breakfast.

Our chart showed Primosten as just a few miles away and the weather for today was exactly as expected. Our sail today turned out to great day to get some miles under our belt and test out a few gybes with the crew. Fantastic winds ensued and we had winds of 10-12 knots throughout the morning, plus the chance to test out a few maneuvers with the crew. Following lunch on the water and a few maneuvers, playtime was over. We headed to Primosten nice and early, after hearing the marina was quite small. Thankfully there was plenty of room on this smaller town quay.

Again under the eyes of a keen Harbour Master, we moored for the day and within 20 minutes were all safely secured. Primosten offered lots to see and options to explore, following a brief visit to the beach and a strut through the old town. We decided that we have to stop here again on the way back to Trogir and give this town the time it deserved.

Rogozniza to Primosten (6nm)

Day 4 - Primosten to Sibenik (11nm)

Sailing from Primosten to Sibenik, today was the day I was most looking forward to on the trip. I have heard about the National Park and Waterfalls in Krka for a few years now I felt this would be one of the days key to my time in Croatia. Keen to get going we left Primosten just after breakfast and 'sailed' to Sibenik. The winds were super light today (less than 5kts) and the journey was quite a short one on the motor. Arriving into Sibenik, I was suprised at how big the city was, it has a lively waterfront, a fuel station and to my crew's delight a Mcdonalds' within walking distance.

Once moored, for such a large town it was strange to see this was our first town quay without full facilities however the ability to get to Krka National Park certainly made up for it. We climbed into a local taxi and made our way to the National Park.

Lots of different paths of varying lengths make their way through the park and we very happily spent the rest of the day trekking past what felt like a new waterfall around each corner.

Primosten to Sibenik (11nm)

Day 5 - Sibenik to Primosten (11nm)

Now officially on the return leg, we could relax a little more, as we were simply heading back 'Home'. Our confidence on board was really high, also aided by winds almost Ionian in nature and the ability to motor along on smooth glassy water. All the scare stories of freezing 'Bura' winds of late October seemed a million miles away from 25 Degrees and less than two knots of wind we had on this return leg.

Pootling along, with almost no other boats on the water, we could have stopped to look at St Nicholas 16th Century Citadel on the way out of Sibenik but we were keen to get to Primosten as soon as we could.

Arriving at Primosten just after lunchtime we arrived at the same time as lots of Croatians that head to Primosten for a day out due to its great beach and relaxed feel. This time around we were going to make the most of Primosten and had enough time to hit the beach and explore the winding streets of its walled city and hilltop church.

Primosten is certainly a stop worth adding to an itinerary. I would recommend it to anyone heading North from Split.

Sibenik to Primosten (11nm)

Day 6 - Primosten to Trogir (20nm)

Due to time constraints, today was our final day sailing and our longest day on the water we needed to return to Trogir. We headed out of Primosten on the motor. Then after an hour of motoring, the wind picked up and we had a fantastic stretch of real sailing. Twelve to fifteen knots of wind pushed us along a sailing either a broad reach or running dead downwind. The sailing was nice and stable and that kept the crew happy while cruising along at between 4-6 knots was enough to keep almost any sailor happy. Compared to the non-existent winds of yesterday this was very much a welcomed change and by far the best sailing conditions for the week. A little under five hours later we pulled into the fuel station in Trogir for a top-up and back into the Marina.

Mercifully the easy berth that we left five days ago was available for us to slip right back into. I would never forgive myself if we had five days issue free and then caused a scrape in the final 100 meters. Needless to say, I should have had more faith in my crew as by now we were a well-oiled machine and piloted the boat, back into its spot with minimal stress.

Overall a fantastic break on the water, and the fears of Croatia being a very expensive, cold October destination were completely dashed. I have to admit we were really lucky with the amazing weather for the entire week but for the price, availability of yachts, and lack of other boats on the water I would happily recommend it!

While the beginnings of Split are often connected to the construction of Diocletian's Palace, the city was discovered earlier as a Greek colony of Aspálathos. The Greek settlement lived off trade with the surrounding Illyrian tribes, mostly the Delmatae, who inhabited the (much larger) nearby city of Salona. In time, the Roman Republic became the dominant power in the region, and conquered the Illyrians in the Illyrian Wars of 229 and 219 BC. Upon establishing permanent control, the Romans founded the province of Dalmatia with Salona as the capital, and at that time the name of the nearby Greek colony Aspálathos was changed to "Spalatum".

Following the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476, Spalatum became a part of the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantium.

It grew very slowly as a satellite town of the much larger Salona. However, around AD 639 Salona fell to the invasion of Avars and Slavs, and was razed to the ground, with the majority of the displaced citizens fleeing to the nearby Adriatic islands. Following the return of Byzantine rule to the area, the Romanic citizens returned to the mainland under the leadership of the nobleman known as Severus the Great. They chose to inhabit Diocletian's Palace in Spalatum, because of its strong (more "medieval") fortifications. The palace was long deserted by this time, and the interior was converted into a city by the Salona refugees, making Spalatum much larger as the successor to the capital city of the province. Today the palace constitutes the inner core of the city, still inhabited, full of shops, markets, squares, with an ancient Cathedral of St. Duje (formerly Diocletian's mausoleum) inserted in the corridors and floors of the former palace. As a part of the Byzantine Empire, the city had varying but significant political autonomy.

Split took root from a flourishing ancient Roman town, and its rich history and culture can be gleaned from the surviving remnants and ruins that are scattered within the “old” town. One of the major reasons why many sailors and travelers love to spend their yacht charter holiday in the town of Split is the fact that it is truly Adriatic in every sense of the word.

Split - Crown Jewel of Croatia

Split is the oldest and most significant tourist destination within the region. It hosts the famed Diocletian’s Palace, which is regarded as one of strongest link to the rich culture of ancient Roman civilization in all of Croatia.

The city was founded by Diocletian, emperor of ancient Roman Empire and the exclusive enclave was chosen as his place of retirement. This explains the presence in the town of Split of surviving remnants of opulence and wealth of a rich ancient civilization.

Important Attractions and Places to Visit on Your Yacht

For those who are spending their luxury yacht charter holiday in Split for the first time, it is essential that they start their discovery and experience of the beauty and charm of Croatia by visiting the Diocletian’s Palace as well as its 4 imposing gates. This architectural and historical gem of Split is regarded as one of the world’s best-preserved ancient palaces today. This palace is the best reminder of the strong influence of the ancient Roman civilization on the culture of Croatia.

Other notable landmarks and archeological structures that you must see in Split include the cathedral of St. Duje, the Temple of Jupiter, the Peristil Square, the famed Egyptian sphinxes and the renowned promenade of Split. Of course, it is best that you cap your journey to the old Split with a visit to the town’s Archeological Museum.

Depending on the kind of yacht charter holiday that you want to experience in Split, there are diverse options of important sights to see and places to visit. If it is shopping galore that you want to experience in your Croatian jaunt, then your day activity should include the underground shopping center of Podrum and the Enoteka Terra, if you are looking for the best local wines and spirits. Another shopping haven that you should not miss is the Marmontova Street. This stretch of road is lined with an array of fashion boutiques that showcase the best and premium designer apparel.

Of course, your Croatian experience is never complete if you don’t sample the local cuisine. There are numerous restaurants in various sections of the city, but the best ones are those located along the waterfront. You can sample in these restaurants delectable local dishes such as grilled seafood and shellfish, roasted lambs and other local concoctions like salted anchovies mixed in olive oil.

If you are looking for the authentic Croatian yachting experience, then you should set sail to Split to spend your yacht charter holiday there.

Split Yacht Charter Enquiry

Just a brief note to let you know we had a great week aboard the Lady Thuraya. The yacht is in great condition, everything appears as new the furnishings are tasteful and comfortable and all the fixtures worked perfectly well. The navigation equipment also appears state of the art, looks like the renovation was extensive and very complete. But what really made our stay most enjoyable was the crew, always ready and anticipating our every desire, attentive to the smaller details, always a smile on their face and a genuine interest in providing us with an unforgettable experience while giving us all a great sense of safety and security with their professional attitude and ease of maneuvering the sailboat even into the tightest of mooring spots. The food was delightful and light, impecably served, totally appropriate for the heat we experienced; pity that Frans will not make a career of cooking on yachts! Bravo! Guide to Split

Blissful beaches, cool crowds

A pearl of the Dalmation Coast and the second-largest city in Croatia, Split is becoming a highly popular destination for luxury yacht charters . Its impressive architecture, trendy haunts and cultural beacons pull in thousands of visitors every year, but it is also equally renowned for its sapphire sea and picture-perfect beaches.

When arriving to Split by yacht, the city looks less like a thriving metropolis and more like a beachside oasis. Palm trees line the waterways, turquoise coves dot the shores and and flourishing green areas give the city a refreshing energy.

Visitors can easily while away hours perusing the streets of Split. The city borrows inspiration from Venetian and Baroque themes, all underpinned by the signature Croatian architecture. A number of ancient sites were used as the backdrop for Game of Thrones; these include the fortress of Klis just outside the city and many of the city's elegant streets.

The famous Diocletian’s Palace also enjoyed a star billing in Game of Thrones; namely the site’s basement played host to a den of dragons. Whether you’re a Game of Thrones fan or not, the UNESCO-listed building is well worth exploring while on a yacht charter vacation in the Mediterranean .  It dates back to the 4th century AD, and was originally built as a lavish estate for the Emperor.

After a dose of culture, be sure to check out Split’s burgeoning creative side. The city is awash with prestigious art galleries and boutique shops peddling trend-setting bespoke goods. The city is also famous for its flourishing lavender fields, and you would be remiss not to bring back some heady lavender oil or sweet-scented cakes of soap after your trip to Split.

Within dawdling distance of Diocletian’s Palaces lies Bacivce Beach, a sandy strip where you can enjoy some down time before returning to your charter yacht to begin the next leg of your adventure.

If you are interested in incorporating Split into your yacht charter vacation, be sure to take a look at all Croatia luxury charter yachts .

Since 1995 we have been working in yacht charter business and offer sailing boat rental in Croatia . We mostly work with high-quality sailing boats provided by our sister company Beneteau Croatia . In addition to yacht charter in Croatia , we also operate one of the oldest and best sailing school in Croatia where we provide sailing courses to “new” as well as to experienced sailors.

Our company philosophy is to provide our clients with the best possible service  when they charter a yacht for a sailing holiday in Croatia . Our team consists mainly of very experienced sailors, securing the highest possible standard in the whole process with arranging/planning, booking, arrival at one of our charter bases in Croatia and final departure from the Marina for an unforgettable sailing adventure in Croatia.

As already mentioned, our yacht charter fleet consists mainly of sailing boats from Beneteau. In our fleet we have boats from 30 feet to about   64 feet and in terms of berths our boats offer space for 6-12 persons. All boats are carefully maintained by our technical team and the colleagues from Beneteau Croatia . As a charter client you can expect to board a charter boat in super condition.

Well, what is the wording – no rule without an exception ! Actually, we at Ultra Sailing also have Catamarans for charter ; the catamarans are of the brand Fountaine Pajot . If you rather want to rent a motorboat , mega yacht or other types of vessel our experienced booking team can of course assist you in finding vessels of those types.

From which charter bases in Croatia can the Ultra Sailing boats be rented?  Ultra has branch offices and staff in ACI Marina Split , ACI Marina Dubrovnik , Marina Baotic (Trogir) ,    ACI Marina Pomer in Pula and Marina Kastela . Charter boats have to be returned in the same Marina they were rented in. Upon request and payment of additional fee it is possible to arrange one way charter from Trogir/Split to Dubrovnik or vice versa .

Charter price  depends on a number of factors, size and type of charter boat, duration of rental and date of the charter . At Ultra we offer various discount programs like early booking Yachtcharter   or last minute sailing if you are flexible it is possible to enjoy a week sailing holiday in Croatia at a bargain price.

If you are looking to charter a sailing boat in Croatia for the first time, you of course need to be aware of the formal requirements for chartering a yacht in Croatia , no need to say that a license for operating the vessel is required. Additionally, sailing and navigation skills should be on an adequate level. Detailed information about the exact requirements for chartering a yacht from Ultra Sailing in Croatia can be found on our page. If you don't have the necessary licenses, we can arrange a skipper or we can recommend considering the Ultra sailing school program where the necessary theoretical and practical sailing skills can be acquired to do a bareboat sailing .

Split first came to prominence in around AD 295 when the Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered a palace built there. Diocletian's Palace remains an important part of the city to this day even after a number of other empires have ruled over the city over the last two Millennia.

The Venetians owned Split over the city for more than 350 years, then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the French and then of course Tito’s Yugoslavia until the late 1980’s. Diocletian’s Palace remains an important part of the city, untouched in the civil war and the destruction of Yugoslavia in the early 1990’s. As such this historic port is an almost unspoiled Mediterranean port that is worthy of a stay for a day or two, even before heading off on a luxury yacht charter.

Explore Split By Renting A Boat or Yacht

You can sail to Brac Island and Solta Island that lie an easy few hours sailing away from the ACI Marina Split, and can give you a taste of the best the Adriatic has on offer shortly after leaving port and an easy shakedown cruise on the sailing yacht. Another historic port on the Dalmatian Coast is Trogir, again a short day sail from the city along the bay.

On a typical sailing holiday you can mix and match between cities and towns, laid back anchorages and busy marinas as you go, taking in everything from barbecues on deserted beaches to full blast nightlife the feeling takes you.

Thanks to its position in the middle of the Adriatic Coast, Split is a great place to start a yacht charter heading south through the islands and along the Croatian coast towards Dubrovnik. Many a yacht charter up the Adriatic Sea is a one way trip, taking in the islands to the west as you hop from port to anchorage on your journey.

Skippered and fully crewed yacht charters also follow this route, with you just a passenger while taken by sea to some of the best spots known to those running the boat.

The holiday hotspot of Hvar is just a couple of days’ sailing from Split too. You will encounter the best nightlife in the region as well as some fantastic beaches. On an itinerary such as this you would loop back to Split at the end of your trip.

Heading north, Kornati Island is a national park with unique geology and wildlife, and are worth a visit for a day or more.

Around 50% of the marinas in Croatia are run by the state-owned ACI Marina company. These are of a good standard, though you should be aware that on some of the remoter islands shore power and water might be limited. ACI Split is where most sailboat charters leave from, though Trogir Marina is not far from Split Airport – you can include Split as part of your planned itinerary from there.

Where you can sail to or hire a boat to travel in the nearby area

If you have an eight day yacht charter (Saturday to Saturday) then you can head south to Dubrovnik and loop back or north to the Pula peninsula and return.

On a bigger, faster vessel like a motor boat or superyacht you could visit much of the coast of Croatia from north to south – it isn’t a very big country, though there are 2,000 islands to visit!

How To Get To Split

There are regular flights from several British airports to Split.

Travel routes to get there.

From the UK you can fly direct from Bristol, Belfast, Glasgow, London (Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton), Newcastle, and Manchester. It is also possible to fly to Venice and then on to Split from there.

The airport is 23km from the main city and a taxi costs around £30 for the trip. There are shuttle buses into the city centre from the airport too – these can save you money but you will still have to get from the bus station to the ACI Marina Split for the sailboat charter.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Split

Broadly there are two ways you can take a charter out of Split. The first is a one-way trip south to Dubrovnik, taking in the islands and coastline as you go.

The second is a loop route. Heading south over 6-8 days it is possible to head down to Dubrovnik and then island hop north via Vis island, Hvar Town and Stari Grad, either staying on a mooring buoy or going alongside at a town quay as you head back to Split.

Heading north you can take in the Kornati Island national park and head as far north as the original Dalmatian capital of Zadar before looping back south.

Trogir Marina is a little closer to Split Airport than ACI Split so you could include the city as a stop on similar routes north or south.

A typical day’s sail could be up to 35 miles though can be as few as 15. On a sailing monohull this would amount to 3-7 hours sailing daily though on a quick motor yacht you can cover a greater distance and spend more time exploring ashore.

Types Of Boats and Yachts To Hire In Split

Broadly there are four types of boat you can hire in Split – the motor cruiser, monohull sailboat , catamaran and speedboat.

Ranging from a 50 metre-plus fully crewed superyacht to a 15 metre bareboat, motor cruisers are a comfortable and fast way of getting around the coast and islands of Croatia. The larger ones will have all manner of toys from jet skis to racing yachts aboard, and plenty of entertainment space to enjoy sunsets (and sunrises!) in good company.

Monohull sailing boat

The workhorse of the sailboat charter fleet, monohull sailboats do the job in comfort – though not at a ripping pace. Better at getting to windward than a sailing catamaran, you’ll likely find yourself under sail more often on a loop route than on a cat. Don’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry, but that’s part of the fun of sailing! Available for as little as €120 a day at the basic end you can have a great sailing holiday for a group of six adults at a good price – though you can pay a lot more for extra comfort and space.

Sailing catamaran

Much quicker downwind than a monohull, sailing catamarans can be fun and fast – but extremely comfortable and spacious at the same time. Expect en suite heads in every cabin and plenty of entertainment space below. The twin engines will more than make up for the leeway that makes these less handy to windward.

Not for spending the night on, speedboats are still a fun way to explore the Croatian coastline and islands. You can hire one for a day or half-day and blast about the sea, enjoying the sunshine and cool sea breezes with the wind in your hair.

Do you need a licence to hire a Yacht or Boat in Split

If you are on a skippered or crewed yacht charter you do not need a license to charter a boat out of Split. You also don’t require a license for smaller speedboats. However if you are on a bareboat charter you will need a license of sorts. Accepted licenses include:

The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) - European and South African sailors

Qualifying national sailing certificates for the icc.

Day Skipper

Coastal Skipper

Yachtmaster

American Sailing Association

ASA 104 Bareboat certificate

International Proficiency Certificate

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Split

The sailing holiday season in Split runs from April to October. Marinas charge around 20% extra in July and August and can be very busy – if you can avoid these months then it will be cheaper and quieter.

It can be very hot in the summer months too with the odd day in the high 30s or above. The sea is very warm in August, getting up to 25 degrees C.

Weather can change quickly so do keep your wits about you. As always be aware of the local forecast for the coming 24 hours.

Expect occasional rainy days but temperatures between 22-28C and up. Winds will be NW, 10-20kts

June-August

Very little rain if any. Temperatures from 26C and up to the mid 30s. Wind NW 10-20kts

Cost of hiring Yachts and Boats in Split

A motor cruiser can cost from €400 a day for a 12 metre boat though this can reach €600 a day in summer. If you have €37,000 a day you can hire a superyacht that comes with crew, tenders and toys.

Catamarans will cost from €500 a day in low season up to €5000 a day for a luxury end one in high season.

Monohull sailing yachts can cost as little as €120 a day though in high season the same vessel will cost €200 or more.

Speedboats with no sleeping cabin can cost as little as €50 for a half day.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Charter a private yacht in split with scansail.

Situated in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, Split is a beautiful and historic city waiting to be explored. Not only is Split filled with an abundance of natural beauty, but it is the largest city on the Adriatic Coast, meaning there is so much to see! The city itself is sprinkled with gorgeous beaches that are ideal for a private yacht charter. Moreover, you can travel around and go island hopping throughout the region to get to know Croatia like never before.

How much does it cost to charter a private yacht in Split?

The price of a private yacht charter in Split will vary depending on various factors such as the duration of the journey, the seasonality, the boat type and the size of the vessel. Below is a list of average prices according to yacht type.

€4,000 per week

€5,694 per week

€4,270 per week

€9,800 per week

What is the best time to visit Split?

Split has a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and shorter yet cold winters. If you visit during the summer, you can expect consistent sunshine and highs of around 30 degrees Celsius. However, the winter months can drop down to 0 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the best time to charter a private yacht in Split is from June to September.

Should I charter a private yacht with or without a skipper?

When searching through Scansail, you may find that many yachts come with the option to hire a skipper. While it is possible to charter a yacht without a skipper, having a professional sailor on board with you brings many advantages. For example, a skipper will be able to handle all the sailing, docking and anchoring, leaving you with more time to relax and enjoy. Moreover, the skipper will be comfortable sailing around the region, so they can safely navigate around Split and show you all the best it has to offer. Ultimately, a skipper can provide you with the ultimate luxury boating holiday.

What to do in Split?

With so much to see and do in Split, it can be difficult to know where to begin. For this reason, we have compiled a few suggestions to help inspire your private yacht charter holiday.

Firstly, we recommend getting to know the Old Town. It is a coastal city, so you can dock your yacht in the ACI Marina nearby. Afterwards, you can wander the streets and gaze up at the stunning architecture. If you’d like to visit beaches, one of the most popular spots is Kašjuni Beach. Thanks to Marjan Hill, the beach is protected from any harsh winds, so you won’t have to worry about any windy days keeping you cold. If you want to be greeted by more soft sands and aquamarine waters, Žnjan and Trstenik Beach are other great options to spend sunbathing and swimming. These beaches are connected by a long walkway and are loved by local residents. The best part about these beaches is that they are very spacious, making them great for families and large groups. Moreover, the beaches are filled with entertaining water sports facilities such as snorkelling, windsurfing and scuba diving.

If you are interested in taking your private yacht charter off the mainland of Split, there are various nearby islands that you can discover! For instance, the largest island in the Dalmatian region is Brač. This breathtaking island is great for exploring. Our top recommendation is to just navigate along the coast until you reach a beach that you enjoy. However, if you want a specific spot to begin, one of the most popular beaches is Zlatni Rat Beach. It has a unique triangular shape and receives visitors from all over the Mediterranean.

Another spectacular island is Hvar, famous for its lush greenery and historic architecture. This island is covered in marvellous beaches for the daytime such as Beach Dubovica and Pokonji Dol. Soak in the Croatian sun during the day and then head to the centre of town to revel in the glamorous nightlife! With so many restaurants and bars, you are certain to be entertained.

Other recommendations of nearby islands to which you can do day trips or longer journeys with your private yacht charter are Vis and Korcula. Each of these are popular destinations with unique characteristics and rich cultures. Whether you come with friends and family or on a romantic getaway, there is something for everyone in Split.

Rent a boat in Split with or without a skipper

Looking for a yacht charter in Split, Croatia? Many of our boat rentals in Split include a skipper on board or allow a skippered option at an additional cost. Having a skipper on board will ensure that you have an even more enjoyable experience.

A skipper will know the area well, and so this is a wonderful chance for you to discover hidden beaches or lesser-known attractions situated just next to the Adriatic Sea . A skipper will also be able to adapt your sailing route so that it best suits both your desires and those of your family and friends. This means that you can sit back, worry-free, and soak in the beauty of this stunning city.

If you choose not to hire a skipper, make sure you have the appropriate boating licence for your boat rental. Alternatively, choose a boat that you can rent without a licence. Whether you decide to hire a yacht in Split with or without a skipper, you’re sure to have an unforgettable holiday.

What is the best time for a Split boat charter?

The best time to rent a yacht in Split would be between May and October, when you have warm weather and little to no rainfall. For the hottest weather, visit in the summer, with averages of 28°C. However, summer is the high tourist season in Croatia, which means that Split will be crowded and the prices of Split yacht charters will be more expensive. For slightly lower prices and fewer crowds, we recommend a sailing experience at the tail ends of the high season in either May, June or September.

What type of boat is best for a Split yacht rental?

If you’re wondering which type of vessel to choose for your Split boat rental, you have to think about the logistics of your sailing holiday. If you want to sail for a longer period of time, it would be better to choose a comfortable and spacious vessel, fully equipped with all the amenities you’ll need.

Yachts and catamarans are great options for longer sailing trips as they are usually rented by the week, and they have everything on board to accommodate all passengers. For a shorter time on the water, we recommend a daily charter such as a RIB or a motorboat. If you’re an avid sailor, you might prefer a traditional sailboat. Be aware that sailboats can be difficult to navigate and should only be operated by experienced licence holders. Find the perfect vessel for your Split boat rental with Click&Boat.

Yacht Charter Split

Split is one of the most popular yacht charter bases in Croatia . A major tourist, commercial and cultural center, it is located in central Dalmatia and is the second largest city in Croatia.

From Split you can sail south to the islands of Brac, known for its Zlatni Rat Beach, long and pebbly; Hvar, the Adriatic’s glitzy party island which has a great culinary scene and Vis, with its Roman ruins and crystalline waters. Peace and quiet is nearby too with many hidden coves and sandy beaches to anchor in.

Dating back to ancient times, there are a number of archaeological, historical and cultural monuments and museums. Diocletian’s Palace is not to be missed. Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it was constructed by the Roman Emperor Diocletian and was an opulent and heavily fortified palace fronting the sea. It now forms about half the old town of Split.

For hiring a vessel from Split, there is a choice of four marinas: ACI Marina Split, Zenta Marina, Spinut Marina and Poljud Marina. The area around Split is well known by sailors as the ideal starting point for yacht rentals in Croatia . The Dalmatian islands are all easily accessible from here and all types of vessels are available for hire: sailing boats , motor boats and catamarans. In Split  we also offer gullets, as well as crewed luxury motor yacht charters .

Sailing conditions in Split

Sailing lovers from all over the world flock to this picturesque town in Croatia to go on a sailing holiday. It’s not just to see the beauty of Split, it is also due to the ideal sailing conditions in this part of Croatia.

On average you will get 315 sunny days per year in Split. During peak season between May and November, you will get sunny weather, mild temperatures and ideal winds for sailing. In the summer months June, July and August temperatures generally range from 26 to 30 degrees, making it ideal for a summer vacation.

However, if you are looking at sailing in Split in lower season, you need to be aware that the weather can change drastically from one moment to the next. We would therefore only recommend more experienced sailors to venture out into the Croatian Mediterranean in the months between December and April.

Three winds dominate this part of Croatia. The Bura, a north-easterly dry, but cold wind that moves from land to sea; the Sirocco, a warm, but humid wind that is generally responsible for a rougher sea; and the Maestral, which is part of the natural phenomenon when the land heats faster than the sea and is then transporting that warmer air out into the sea.

Tides are normally quite low (rarely higher than 0,5 meters) which is important to consider if anchoring in shallow waters.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Split?

The cost of renting a boat in Split can vary highly depending on the type of boat you are looking at renting, whether it is high or shoulder season, how many rooms the boat has, how old the boat is, what kind of budget you are handling and so on. On average you can rent a speedboat in Croatia for as little as 28 EUR per person per day and a speedboat for about 35 EUR per person per day. Other types of boats are more expensive. At an average price of 460 EUR per person per day, the catamaran is, on average, possibly the most expensive type of boat to rent here. On average a gulet would cost you around 75 EUR per person per day, a houseboat is 80 EUR per person per day and a motorboat 61 EUR per person per day. If you’re looking at renting a sailboat, the most popular type of boat in Split, it costs about 225 EUR per person per day.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Split?

There is not THE best boat to rent, only the best boat for your sailing vacation in Split. Depending on whether you want to go on a proper sailing adventure where the experience matters more than the destination or if you just want to rent a boat to find the best beaches, you are looking at different types of boats.

Rent a catamaran in Split

Pros of renting a catamaran in Split

Catamarans are the perfect vehicle to sail in shallow waters. Instead of a keel, they have a shallow draft, which means that you can anchor closer to the shore to swim to some of the most beautiful beaches or to sunbathe in waters that are not as exposed to the wind as open waters. This makes it also the perfect boat to jump right into the water whenever you feel like it.

As catamarans are often more of a luxury option when sailing on water, some might compare them to little hotels on water. If you are up for a sailing adventure, but prefer some of the amenities a typical hotel holiday has to offer, a catamaran charter might be the best option for you.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Split

Standing on two hulls makes catamarans a lot more stable than other types of boats, but also bigger. This might impose a few difficulties on you if you are looking at mooring your boat in a marina. Spaces are usually scarce. Mooring big catamarans often costs more than mooring other types of water vessels.

Rent a sailboat in Split

Chartering a sailboat is one of the most popular options for a sailing holiday in Split. There are plenty of good reasons why this is the case!

Pros of renting a sailboat in Split

Ideal wind conditions lend themselves to the fact that renting a sailboat is one of the most popular options for many tourists visiting this part of Croatia. You get the actual sailing experience rather than just hopping from island to island to enjoy the most beautiful beaches, caves and lagoons. Another pro is the fact that you move with the wind, meaning that you save on the costs for fuel and sail more environmentally friendly. In this day and age it is truly worth considering.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Split

You are 100% dependent on the weather when sailing on a sailing boat in Split. Although many modern sailing boats come with an engine, many older models are not equipped with one. If the wind seizes to blow as much as you would hope, you might find yourself stuck in the middle of the Adriatic. This can be disappointing - especially if you only have a week of vacation to sail around this part of Croatia.

Charter a sailboat in Split

Rent a motorboat in Split

Pros of renting a motorboat in Split

One of the biggest advantages of renting a motorboat is their shallow frame which allows you to anchor closer to the shore than with a sailing boat for example. This comes in especially handy if you look at stopping by some of the stunning beaches and hidden bays that you can discover from Split. Additionally, they are much faster vehicles than some of the other types of boats you can rent in Split, making it the perfect water vessel if you’re aiming at seeing as much as possible within a short period of time.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Split

The speed of motorboats comes at a price. At first glance they might not be the most expensive option, but the faster you sail around Split, the more you will have to pay for fuel. Not necessarily budget-friendly.

Rent a gulet in Split

Chartering a gulet might not be the first choice for everyone, but there are many positive aspects when it comes to renting a gulet in Split.

Pros of renting a gulet in Split

Renting a gulet is not for the fainthearted. Charter a gulet in Split if you are looking for an once in a lifetime adventure! Wake up in a different location every morning and experience what life is like on a boat. Although there are many different kinds of gulets, including luxury options, you cannot compare it with a stay in a hotel room. This makes it a huge plus for all adventurers out there.

Due to its space, gulets are often rented for groups of 10-15 people or more. If you are looking at an adventurous sailing vacation in Split with all your friends, this might be the perfect option. Don’t worry if you are not in possession of a valid international boat licence. You can always rent a gulet with an experienced skipper.

Cons of renting a gulet in Split

Only rent a gulet in Split if you are up for the challenge. Rooms in gulets are generally small. If you are feeling irritable in small spaces, this type of vessel is probably not for you. Other than that, gulets are perfect boats for a week of sailing.

What kind of boat license do you need when renting a boat in Split?

Renting a boat in Split and all of Croatia means that you need to possess a valid boat licence - including a VHF radio licence . This is not just a recommendation, it is Croatian law.

Don’t have a boat licence? Don’t worry! Book a boat in Split with an experienced skipper who will take care of maneuvering the boat, showing you the best spots away from the tourist crowds and most of them even have the most interesting stories to tell.

Sailing routes in Split

Start your sailing adventure in Split by picking up your boat from one of the many marinas. Start with some island hopping around Split on the island of Brac – anchoring in Bol, Milna or Bobovisca Bay. Then go to Zlatni Rat Beach , one of Europe’s most breathtaking beaches. If you love nature, you will be pleased to know that there are several opportunities for hiking and sightseeing. Next head to the vibrant island of Hvar , where you can enjoy great bars, lovely beaches and vineyards. Anchor in the stunning marina on the island of Palmizana . This nature park is just a five-minute sail or water taxi away. Continue south to reach the island of Korcula , which is well known for its charming Venetian Old Town and rich cultural traditions. From Korcula, make your way back to Split’s marina or continue on to the green island of Mljet , past the Elaphiti Islands and make your way to Dubrovnik, another stunning town located in the Adriatic sea.

From the islands of Solta and Brac to the World Heritage City of Trogir, there are many great destinations to visit that are just a stone’s throw (or about 15-30 nautical miles) away, making for some great day trips from Split.

One of the most popular day trips is sailing from Split to the island of Hvar , where you can anchor in some of the most stunning bays in all of the Dalmatian coast. Dubovica Beach and Jagodna Beach are just two of the incredible beaches you can visit on your trip there.

Lake Michigan Boating Guide

Lake Michigan Boating Guide

Table of Contents

Last Updated on August 23, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

With over 1,600 miles of coastline to explore, Lake Michigan can’t be beat for gunkholing, cruising, and sailboat racing. One of the five Great Lakes, this giant body of water is over 300 miles long, has more than 22,000 square miles of surface area, and borders four sates so there’s always somewhere to go and somewhere to rent a boat with a sharing service like Boatsetter. From Indiana to Chicago and Milwaukee to Mackinac, there are dozens of secluded anchorages, state parks, and charming waterfront towns to visit.

Where to Go

Grand Traverse Bay

You could spend years of summers exploring all that Lake Michigan offers but if you have just a few days of boat rental each season, consider checking out some of these destinations.

Grand Traverse Bay is well-protected and generally calm even if Lake Michigan itself is less so. Learn about Ernest Hemmingway who was from the area or explore the town of Charlevoix that is split in two by a canal which leads to Round Pond and Lake Charlevoix. Bring or rent bikes and ride the 26-mile Little Traverse Wheelway for some exercise.

Visit scenic Door County in Wisconsin on the lake’s western shore. The Door County Lighthouse Festival is popular as are July 4 th fireworks in Egg Harbor. And you don’t want to miss the Sturgeon Bay Harvest Festival in late September. Harbor hopping in this area can’t be beat.

Mackinac Island

Beaver Island is the opposite of busy Mackinac. This remote island is 35 miles from Charlevoix on the mainland and tends to be a quiet respite with an unpretentious municipal dock and fun toy museum. The beaches are pristine and you won’t want to miss the Whiskey Point Lighthouse and the Beaver Head Lighthouse for their spectacular views. Check the weather before crossing from the mainland so you don’t get caught in 30-mile winds which are not uncommon here.

Activities & Highlights

Whether you’re in Milwaukee, Chicago, or Door County, there’s much to do during the summer including live music, wine tastings and art festivals. One big draw is the Chicago Air & Water Show that takes place in August and on a boat, you’ll have front row seats to the action. Another can’t miss event is the Playpen boat party which is like a giant tailgate party for boaters that draws in excess of 800 boats in late July.

There are also sailing regattas like the famous “Mac” race that runs from the Chicago Yacht Club to Mackinac Island. This race takes place in July, is over 300 miles long, and over 125 years old. Join the sailboat send off in Chicago or welcome them at the finish line at the island and partake of all the activities and celebrations on both sides of this classic event.

Lake Michigan is long and it can build up seriously large waves when a northerly wind runs along its entire length. Always check the weather before departing, especially if you’ll be boating farther south around Chicago where the weather and sea state can get gnarly. Freshwater forms steeper waves than saltwater because it’s less dense and running into a wall of square waves is no fun.

It can also get very cold in winter with temps below freezing in January near the Windy City. Target to rent a boat in the area from May to October but be ready to change course or cruising plans, especially in spring and fall when the weather may be iffy. Dress appropriately, bring lots of layers, pack flashlights in case you’re caught out after dark, and don’t forget some extra food and water.

Rules & Regulations

There are a few things to know before you untie the dock lines. Like in most other states, the Coast Guard requires all children under 13 to wear a lifejacket when aboard a vessel under way, and there must be a sufficient number of PFDs for the rest of the people aboard as well. You as the operator, cannot bring the boat within 150 feet of a person in the water for safety reasons – unless you’re participating in watersports.

Also, Lake Michigan is located in its entirety within the United States which means there are no check-in requirements for Canadian immigration or customs. You’ll have a bureaucracy-free run of the whole lake.

Serious Boating

Just because it’s called a lake doesn’t mean you should take it less seriously than coastal boating on the ocean. The Great Lakes are massive bodies of water and Lake Michigan can be nearly 200 miles across so it will take some time to traverse. Be boating savvy and prepared. All this said, there are great anchorages, wonderful beaches, and much to do on its shores so book a boat and have fun all summer long
