Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2024

One of three Cookson 50s in the race, this New Zealand yacht is coming up for her first Rolex Sydney Hobart, so her form is relatively unknown. However, she is a local product of Cooksons in Auckland, so on paper, should be a goer. As if to prove so, in March 2011, Akateatook line honours in the NZ Round North Island Yacht Race. She finished well ahead of the rest of the fleet, winning all four legs on line. Crew includes family members Wade and Ross Lewis, who were aboard for the win. Also joining the crew is noted Kiwi all-round yachtsman, Rodney Keenan, who has travelled this path a few times in the past and picks his boats carefully, meaning Akatea is sure to make her mark.

The 45m/147'8" motor yacht 'Awatea' (ex. My Trust) was built by Hakvoort in the Netherlands at their Monnickendam shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Felix Buytendijk Yacht Design and she was completed in 2008. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Cor D. Rover Design and she was last refitted in 2023.

Awatea has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 suites comprising two VIP cabins and two cabins that can operate as twins or doubles. The supremely spacious full beam master suite incorporates its own study and dressing room. She is also capable of carrying up to 9 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Awatea is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3508B DI-TA) 960hp engines running at 1600rpm, she comfortably cruises at 11 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 13 knots with a range of up to 4,600 nautical miles from her 71,223 litre fuel tanks at 11 knots. Her water tanks store around 15,662 Litres of fresh water. She was built to Lloyds Register ✠ 100 A1 SSC Yacht Mono G6 ✠ LMC classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.

Akatea makes a statement in Lipton Regatta

Eoin Fehsenfeld’s Shaw 11, Akatea, shot out of the blocks in the first race of the 2017 Lipton Cup series to register a solid line honours win over Bruce McKraken’s First 45, Ikon, but drew attention to itself for all the wrong reasons in the second race, which was started under a ‘U’ flag after a general recall.

Akatea was left with nowhere to go when she reached the line about ten seconds early, earning a disqualification, but claimed line honours again by a similar margin in Race 3.

Rod Warren’s Joust enjoyed Race 1, shadowing Ikon for most of the race to register a first place on IRC by five seconds over Ikon, but steering problems ended their campaign midway through the first leg of the second race. Given the closeness of the competition, her retirement was a huge disappointment. With the problem rectified between races, Joust returned to competition for Race 3.

The second race followed the script, with Ikon taking line honours in Akatea’s absence ahead of Stuart Lyons’ J111, Jake. Ikon, Vertigo and Jake took out the first three places on IRC. With another IRC first place in Race 3, Ikon looks primed to reclaim the Lipton Cup which eluded her in controversial circumstances last year.

Division C’s first race was delayed as the race committee waited for breeze, but when racing began, it was Calum Brenan’s Lucy in the Sky which pulled away for a first and fastest ahead of Tim Feore’s Osprey and the S80 Moonraker, sailed by P Neilson and R Langham.

Moonraker turned tables on the Diamonds in Race 2, finishing third over the line to win PHS handicap ahead of Lucy in the Sky and Alison Wilson’s Pascol, but Pascol scored a convincing handicap win in the third race ahead of the S80, Outlaw. Results in this division will now be wholly dependent on tomorrow’s Long Race.

Another strong contingent of Bluebirds was close all day, with three different winners from three races. Panacea won the first race, Blue Volvo, sailed by Samantha Paige won the second and the third went to Warwick Norman’s Revel. Like Division C, the final outcome will rest on the Long Race.

Despite a fourth place in Race 2, Fred Kasparek’s Weapon of Choice leads the VX 1 sports boat division with a second fourth and first placing from today’s races. Kim Clarke’s AUS139 is also well placed.

The Cruising Division only sailed one race today, with PHS handicap honours going to Michael Pointon’s Vitesse, followed by Robin Warlond’s Shore Thing and Ray Borrett’s Laurelle.

Line honours went to Gary Prestedge in the Archambault 40, One for the Road, which worked its way to the front during the first leg and was never headed.

The International Cadet class looks like a tough battle between Spitfire (Peter Allen and Ashton Rawstron) scoring a first and a second along with Anaconda (Eliot Hughes and William Farnell). A protest in this fleet may affect the outcome.

Weather conditions were challenging early, with very light breezes on the eastern side of the bay and some big shifts.

Rover, envelops a welcoming nautical interior with exceptionally large volumes for a 45m yacht. AWATEA accommodates up to 14 guests in five staterooms with a splendid full beam master suite on the main deck. AWATEA took four years to build, and the result is a timeless, highly functional little ship punching well above her weight. Her sweeping lines and flared bow combine elegance with seaworthiness. Her exterior finishes are rare for a yacht of her size, and her functional layout makes the most of her 499 Gross Tons. AWATEA feels a lot larger than the average 45m yacht. Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht My Trust, built in 2008 by Dutch shipyard Hakvoort, is a modern tribute to an opulent outdoor lifestyle. With a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, her naval architect is Diana Yacht Design while she features exterior design by Cor D. Rover and the interior work of Felix Buytendijk. This arresting vessel measures 45 metres and can accommodate up to 10 guests.

With a distinctive dark blue hull, My Trust creates an imposing picture with her sweeping line that extends from her stern to the very top of her superstructure. Her exterior finishes are rare for a yacht of her size, featuring details finished in teak veneer that only adds to the vessel’s warm ambience.

The luxury motor yacht’s bright and spacious aft deck offers a generous seating area complete with a sofa large enough to seat 10 and two large teak tables. Atop this sits the sundeck boasting a whirlpool tub for up to six people and liberal space for lounging in the sun. When the heat gets too much, there is even a 15-nozzle water-misting system that operates with the touch of a button. For entertaining there is an electric stainless grill and bar.

The superyacht’s impressive lazarette is more well-equipped then most, featuring air conditioning and a complete bathroom with shower. Here the garage houses a full range of watertoys, a dive compressor, tender and three PWCs. Also onboard are two Vespa scooters ready to be ridden ashore.

Drawing on the red, blue and white of the Dutch flag, the super yacht’s colour scheme is complemented by a distinctly nautical interior, somewhat resembling a traditional sailing yacht. The main saloon features a dry bar, and pop-up LCD screen alongside a dining area and, further forward, a galley and pantry. The bridge deck boasts its own lobby as well as a bar fashioned in the same way as a classic yacht club complete with beer taps and an espresso machine. The area also houses a lounge with sofas, games table and cinema.

Amongst her five cabins are an indulgent owner’s stateroom and four double guest staterooms. The owner’s suite is accessed via a large study and features a retractable LCD flat-screen TV, two-seat sofa, walk-in-wardrobe, and a private bathroom with shower, whirlpool bath, sauna and treadmill. The lower deck houses the four guest cabins each with en suite, hidden drop-down TV and Pullman bunk. An extra-luxurious feature is the remote-controlled system for the AV as well as cabin lighting, curtains and air conditioning. Crew accommodation is situated forward on the lower deck and consists of four double cabins with separate bathrooms, all of which open off the crew’s mess.

Featuring a dedicated crew, My Trust is an excellent charter yacht for luxury vacations. The yacht cruises comfortably at 11.3 knots while her crew of nine ensure the needs of every guest are met.

My Trust was built in compliance with MCA standards and to class with Lloyds. She is also the first superyacht from the Netherlands to be constructed under the new charter guidelines for Commercial Cruising Vessels (CCV).

She cruises the West Mediterranean during the summer charter season and the Caribbean during winter.

Clarence Thomas Took Free Yacht Trip to Russia, Chopper Flight to Putin’s Hometown: Dems

The allegedly secret gifts were disclosed in a letter from two Democratic senators that accused Thomas of potentially committing tax fraud.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been accused of not disclosing a yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter flight to a palace in President Vladimir Putin’s hometown, among a slew of other gifts and loans from businessman Harlan Crow .

Buried on page 14 of a letter that two Democratic senators sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday, in which they urged Garland to appoint a special counsel to probe Thomas, was an astonishing list of dozens of “likely undisclosed gifts and income” from Crow, Crow’s affiliated companies, and “other donors.”

In the letter, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) said Thomas, one of the court’s staunchly conservative justices , even may have committed tax fraud and violated other federal laws by “secretly” accepting the gifts and income potentially worth millions.

“The Senate is not a prosecutorial body, and the Supreme Court has no fact-finding function of its own, making the executive role all the more important if there is ever to be any complete determination of the facts,” reads the letter requesting the appointment of a special prosecutor. 

“We do not make this request lightly,” said the letter. 

The list of potentially secret gifts also includes a loan of more than $267,000 provided by Thomas’ close friend Anthony Welters, the yacht trip to Russia from the Baltics, and the helicopter ride to Yusupov Palace in St. Petersburg. ProPublica first reported last year on the existence of extensive undisclosed gifts and lavish trips from Crow.

Additionally, Justice Thomas is accused of not disclosing tuitions for his grandnephew, free lodging, real estate transactions, and home renovations. The action escalates Democratic senators’ efforts to hold Thomas accountable for perceived ethics controversies. 

According to the senators, Thomas’ conduct could violate the Ethics in Government Act, which requires officials like Supreme Court justices to file annual reports disclosing gifts and income accepted from outside sources.

“It is a crime,” reads the report, “To knowingly and willfully fail to file or report such information.”

Since 2023, two Senate committees have been looking into the 1991 loan from Welters that was connected to Thomas’ purchase of a luxury motor home. Welters previously responded to a New York Times request for comment on the loan only to say that it was “satisfied.”

Thomas, for his part, belatedly disclosed some—but not all—gifts from Crow this year and has defended the gifts as “personal hospitality” from some of his and his wife’s “dearest friends.”

“The evidence assembled thus far plainly suggests that Justice Thomas has committed numerous willful violations of federal ethics and false-statement laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy benefactors have,” Whitehouse and Wyden wrote.
