In 1913, and a group of fellow boat owners met at his boathouse to discuss and make plans for organizing a yacht club. They enthusiastically drew up Articles of Incorporation, subscribed money to buy land on the lake and build a clubhouse, and voted for the officers, making himself the first Commodore. Built at a cost of $5,000, the clubhouse was ready for the new members to enjoy by October of the same year. The first Regatta, featuring power boats, took place shortly after the opening of the . Many regattas were held that year to encourage boating, but the first one was so special that all the businesses closed so everyone in town could watch the races.
The , the received its charter on October 11, 1913, signed by Governor Park Trammel. The club has been in existence ever since and celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2003.
The original club was formed for the "promotion of yachting and education in seamanship." All members were required to be boat owners, a rule which was enforced until the 1940s, when the loss of membership due to the war, and gasoline rationing made the requirement impractical. During World War II, several MDYC members assisted the Coast Guard in patrolling Lake Harris every day. The Club itself was used as a USO during the war, and food was prepared by the members, who bore both the expense and the sacrifice of some of their food ration coupons in order to provide for the servicemen and women who visited the USO. Some 17,000 servicemen and women were entertained at the . At the time Mount Dora’s population was less than 4,000 people. The club never closed its doors, even though World War II took a heavy toll on the membership. It remains the in Florida.
Both regattas and cruises were major activities in earlier years, and continue to be so today. In the beginning, however, races were held for power boats and speed racing. Since 1953, have replaced them, and have been held every year since except for one when a storm with lightning prevented the Regatta from taking place.
In 1966, the original building burned, and a new one took its place at the foot of 4th Avenue on Lake Dora.

Arthur “Dean” Guy, commodore of the Mount Dora Yacht Club, 351 W. Fourth Ave., said he sent a letter to members seeking money for the project and 70 percent of them contributed. The 1,000-square-foot pier was dedicated in January. Guy said the decision to build the private dock came because of crowding at the municipal pier next to the yacht club. “Our members used that dock for many years. We realized we needed one of our own,” Guy said. Wise Marine Construction of Orlando designed and built the 65-foot-wide pier. It is 114 feet long, with the walkway reaching 90 feet and then branching into three 24-foot finger piers that surround boat slips. Guy said about 14 boats can dock in the slips and the outside area. “That depends on the particular depth of the water at any given time,” he said. Guy said the dock needed to be stronger than a typical residential pier, so it was built using larger pilings and ledgers. He said a typical residential dock has pilings of 4 by 4 inches and ledgers of 2 by 6 inches; pilings used for the yacht club dock are 4 by 6 inches and ledgers are 2 by 8 inches. Also, a residential pier would normally be built on 8-foot centers. Centers in the yacht club’s pier are 10 feet. The walkway is 5 feet wide and paved with 2-by-6-inch boards laid crosswise. Guy said pilings reach 8 feet beneath Lake Dora at the pier’s end. “A lot of sand on the lake bottom had to be blown away before the hardpan was reached,” he said. At the pier’s entrance is a 16-by-40-foot upland deck with built-in seating to be used for social activities. “We have a social evening planned for May,” Guy said. “We’ll use the deck to gather for barbecues and other activities – perhaps have a band.” Past the deck is a gated entry with key pad security. Two glass lanterns top the gate and others grace the deck, the walkway and the end of the pier. Some are powered by photoelectric cells that switch the lights on from dusk until dawn. In the center of the dock stands a flagpole flying an American flag, the Florida state flag and the Mount Dora Yacht Club flag. The pole also is illuminated at night. Construction took two months. “One of our members devoted a lot of time working on the permitting, which involved the St. Johns River Water Management District,” Guy said. Jimmy’s Electric Service of Mount Dora provided electrical work. Guy said the Mount Dora Yacht Club, built in 1913, is the third-oldest club of its type in Florida and the state’s oldest inland water yacht club. The club has about 100 members and 40 associates, who are widows of former members.
