Building a J-Class 1/16 scale model R/C sailboat!
The loss of stability happens with all boats that are scaled down to a model size with the smaller the model is compared to the full size version the greater the loss in stability. Larry Ludwig is the supplier for most of the aluminum masts for the Js. his masts are extruded and come in 10′ sections with each 10′ piece weighing just 1 lb.
Canterbury J Class
The Canterbury J is a 1.22 metre (48″) yacht with a main and foresail rigged to a 1.6 metre mast. 350 hulls have been sold and they are to be found in all areas of New Zealand and some as far afield as the USA, Canada and the UK. It is a one-design yacht and all hulls come from official molds approved by the Canterbury J Owners Association.

The rules serve to control the parameters of construction to allow for racing between boats of similar speed and characteristics.

Initial setting up. Place the mast in the mast tube and fix the shrouds and backstay. Attach the jib swivel so that the sails are relaxed with no tension in the shrouds and only slight tension in the backstay and jibstay. Back off the kicker on the mainsail boom and ensure the leech line is loose. Stand back and look at the rig.
