Vanguard Zuma Vs. Vanguard LaserI am thinking about a purchase of either of these two boats, and am wondering waht would work best for a fairly shielded bay, with 2-3 intermediates in it. thanks My wife and I own a Zuma and have enjoyed four years sailing with it on an inland lake in Maine. It is a great boat for one or two, but would be very tight for three. The cockpit is generous for a boat this size and is more comfortable (better for 40 something sailors)in our opinion than the laser. We also looked at both, but decided on the Zuma, and for us it was the right decision. Good luck, I''m sure you could not go wrong with either as they are great boats. Hi! Does anyone know where we can get a rigging diagram for our 1987 Zuma 12' sailboat? Any help would be greatly appreciated.... Look at the pictures in this site..... the sail has a sleeve that slides over the mast.... a downhaul holds the sail in position. http://sailingtexas.com/szumae.html Thanks Victory! The boat looks much newer than its age because it has been stored on a rack in my heated basement and not seen the water in 8years. Before that Zuma was freshwater sailed its entire life and was never raced or abused. The boat features a 2 piece aluminum mast, snap in aluminum boom, zip on sail w/ battens, boom vang, main sheet with cam cleat, hiking strap, tiller extension, 2 dry storage compartments, a compass, and all newer lines throughout. The Zuma is a blast to sail, and can be easily transported in the back of a pickup, or on roof racks, so there is no need for the expense and headaches of a trailer. I am selling the Zuma because I am into cruising on larger sailboats, and just never have time to sail the Zuma. Rig and SailsAuxilary power, accomodations, calculations. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. TNT. Zuma has less square feet of sail and is a little bit shorter therefore it is slower.. Though easyier to sail. "The Zuma makes sailing easy. The 1988 Alcort Zuma Standard sailboat has a fiberglass hull and has an overall length of 12.92 feet. The width (or beam) of this craft is 51 inches. This boat is rigged as a Cat. The sail area for the sailboat is 65 square feet. The displacement for the boat is approximately 129 lbs.
Place the mast butt against a solid object, lift the top end, and walk toward the butt, raising it hand over hand until the mast stands vertical. Rotate the mast until the gooseneck (the metal post about two feet above the butt) points toward the stern. Keep your hands a good distance apart while lifting the mast over the hole.

Not wanting to make waves, but the Zuma is a great one-man boat as well. In fact, I often sailed solo on mine. Like the Sunfish, it's really a very light boat, weighing in at 130 lbs. (the same as a SF) but with a 5' beam. The advantage is that it can also carry more crew. Don't think of it as in the same class as the 340 lb. Catalina 14.2!
Edit, opps you said Zuma. From what I understand these where actually made by Laser Performance North America and would be considered a pretty good entry level boat if you want to just get into sailing. If you think you at one time want to compete, then you may be better off waiting for a deal on a laser to save from having to buy two boats in ...
Wrap the sail sleeve around the mast (with the free end of the halyard inside) above the gooseneck and engage about three inches of zipper to hold it in place. Pull on the halyard with your left hand while zipping the sleeve closed with your right, until the sail is all the way up. Cleat of the halyard securely.

Zuma sailboat made by AMF Alcort/Vanguard in the 80s and 90s. Excellent little sailing dinghy. Simple to rig and sail, room for 2 (friendly) adults and light enough to car top. Responsive, points pretty well and will plane out on a reach. Fun and great to learn on. LOA: 12'9" Beam: 5'0" Sail Area: 65 square feet Weight: 130 lbs
The Holder 12 is very stable, very good sailing boat, and easy to sail but no match for speed for the Laser or the Force 5. The Force 5 is better for larger sailors as it has, if I remember correctly 92 sq. ft. of sail area as compared to 76 (again only by memory) for the laser. The Laser is PLENTY powerful enough when the breeze picks up.
The sail type is quite a bit different - the Sailfish sail is a lateen rig, with two spars, and the lower spar normally has a gooseneck that connects to the mast. I'm honestly not sure if the Zuma mast would fit into that gooseneck. I'd probably look into selling the Sailfish rig and finding a used Zuma sail, or just buy the new one from Intensity.
