The Devonport Yacht Club was officially founded in 1905, but traces its roots back to the late nineteenth century, when yacht racing was first organised on the North Shore, under the auspices of the North Shore Sailing Club.
Following a name change, this became the North Shore Yacht Club. In 1909 the Club, in company with the other three major yacht clubs in Auckland, formed the Auckland Provincial Yachting Association, forerunner of the present Auckland Yachting and Boating Association.

Devonport Yacht Club
From its earliest days as a Naval base, Devonport has had a strong maritime connection. New Zealand claims to have the highest boat ownership per capita in the world and sailing is a popular pastime here.
The Devonport Yacht Club, the wooden building located in front of you at 25 King Edward Parade was founded in 1905 and is located on the prior site of the Devonport Steam Ferry Company. The core building of the clubhouse originates from the old passenger ferry waiting room which was transported there from the old Devonport Victoria Wharf in 1926.
The Devonport Yacht Club has a proud racing heritage and has fostered coastal and offshore cruising, amassing a superb collection of trophies including the oldest known cup still competed for in New Zealand - The Herald Sanford Cup (1870). The club has been affiliated with a number of famous people over the years including its first patron, His Excellency Admiral of the Fleet, Viscount Jellicoe of Scapa, Governor General of New Zealand. And more recently the intrepid Sir Peter Blake was its patron.
During the winter months the foreshore around the club is crowded with yachts and boats of all description undergoing routine maintenance. The haulage of these boats ashore has been a major revenue earner for the Club.
Walk on to see a small concrete plinth and plaque located just before the white wooden building.
From 1859 to the 1890’s Devonport became the most important shipbuilding area in the North Island, if not the whole of New Zealand. Along the waterfront of King Edward Parade and Torpedo Bay that stretches ahead of you were a number of ship building yards which were used to build a range of wooden sailing scows and coastal traders.
Directions to Point 10 - Calliope Sea Scout Hall: Along from the plaque is a white wooden building, the Calliope Sea Scout Hall. Walk past it and stop by the concrete steps.
