  1. Taming the Wild Boom: Two Designs for a Gallows

Unfortunately the traditional gallows can't reasonably be used on most modern cruisers because the short boom on modern boats doesn't reach anywhere near the aft end of the boat. A boom gallows sprouting from the middle of the cockpit or bridged neck might be possible, but it would be damned awkward.

  2. Pam Says: What is a Boom Gallows and Why Should I Have One?

A boom gallows is usually a piece of nice teak that is made into a board about the width of the cockpit of a sailboat. The board has cups or indents across the top that allow a boom, when not in use with the mainsail, to cradle in the cups. Hence the name, boom gallows, as it looks very much like the gallows of old when the heads of people were ...

  4. A Sure Way to Secure the Boom

Boom Gallows: Boom gallows are a great solution for offshore boats, but are rare on cruising boats, and don't suit many coastal craft. The boom crutch, often removable, is the small-boat equivalent. Pendant to Backstay: This limits the movement but does not eliminate it. It also can harm the backstay. Twin Mainsheets: Creating a perfect triangle, twin mainsheets hold the boom in securely.

The Boom Gallows is primarily a safety feature on a boat. It allows the boom to rest in a secure position while any work is done on the boom, such as while reefing or while stowing the mainsail or when the boat is sitting at anchor or on a mooring and even while it is sailing.

  6. Things You Never Thought to Ask About the Boom on Sailboat

What is a Boom Gallows? Help with a Heavy Sail Laden Boom. Many older bluewater boats have boom gallows. It's a wooden arch that spans the cockpit of the boat. It has notches in it where the boom can sit. The purpose of a boom gallows is to provide a hard point where the boom can be sat.

  7. Boom gallows: design, construction and method of use

We do use a boom gallows on the small boat, it is basically a board which clips on to the aft coaming, the lower end is shaped to fit around a footrest/chock on the cockpit sole. Holds the boom nicely, same place every time so the cover fits. Reactions: Buck Turgidson. 6 Dec 2020 #16 Buck Turgidson Well-known member. Joined

Either the sail stretched or it is a different sail altogether, the boat is new to me. I have three options: get a new sail, shorten the boom gallow, get rid of the boom gallow.

The handholds that the gallows provide are just marvelous. Boom sits calmly even in the constant waves that passing ferries, fishermen, harbour police and pilot boats create. We have also took our topping lift to the stern, where it goes through a block on the pull-pit and is tied to a cleat on the starboard.

These things go back to heavy wooden booms and lots of heavy sail material and needing a place to stow this when not in use. Even though the Sail Yacht was "modern" with aluminum spars and Dacron sails it had an 18 ...

  14. Understanding the Boom of a Boat

The Role of the Boom The boom serves as a central hub for controlling your sailboat's performance. By adjusting its position, you can fine-tune the mainsail's angle (a concept known as the point of sail) and shape in response to changing wind conditions. This impacts speed and direction and is an essential attachment point for other sail controls like the outhaul, reef points, and clew.

BOOM GALLOWS Boom gallows frames are available for all of the Westsail boats, made to the original Westsail drawings, and to some new designs that have been done. The most popular boom gallows frame was of 1" OD stainless steel tubing, with ears welded to the top rail to hold a teak bar, and a brace fore and aft on each leg, with round base plates.

  16. Boom Gallows Removal

The boom gallows creates an arch over the cockpit of the boat, supporting the boom when the mainsail isn't being used. I've replaced this support by running a line from One of the minor projects I've had on my list has been the removal of the boom gallows from the cockpit area of the boat.

Makes her a home. Home Depot is bound to have aluminum or galvanized electrical conduit tubing that would be stonger and possibly even cheaper than plastic, which WILL break. The PVC we used to support a winter cover lasted (with many repairs) about two seasons. A boom gallows takes a lot more abuse than that.
