Island Heights Yacht Club
Island Heights Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the United States. Located on Barnegat Bay along the central coast of New Jersey, it is home of the Wanamaker Cup. Founded in July 1898, 30 summer residents agreed to form a yacht club and for that purpose assembled at the house of Charles Webb, a white house across from the club. The first meeting decided that race entrance fees were $.50, and boats must be skippered by owners in good standing.
Stories from Island Heights Yacht Club
On Aug. 9, 1898, the club constitution was adopted. Article 2 states that the purpose of the club is to promote yachting and rowing (rowing has seemed to fall to the wayside). Article 7 states that the original annual dues were to be $3 for members and $2 for junior members. Rule 11 states that the crew for any yachts shall consist of one man for every five feet of deck length and each yacht shall return to port with the same number of crew that she left with. Women were permitted to join in 1899, when an amendment was passed that allowed a ladies’ auxiliary to be formed.
On April 7, 1900, the club incorporated in the state of New Jersey at a cost of $5.16. Riparian rights were purchased at the foot of Oak Avenue for $100.00. Construction on the club house began and the facility was ready for the summer of 1900. On April 28, 1900, the membership agreed on plans for a south wing to the club house, a pier, and to modestly furnish the house for less than $3,500. They approved a north wing three years later for $3,000. They also agreed to purchase the riparian grant from Thomas Perrine for $200. Interclub races then began with Bay Head Yacht Club and Seaside Park Yacht Club. Spectators often viewed races from chartered railroad cars that left from the old Island Heights train station on River Avenue. On Aug. 2, 1901, Bay Head YC, Mantoloking YC, Seaside Park YC, and IHYC agreed to mark a bay channel from Bay Head to Island Heights.

Cute building right off boardwalk. It's a nice location to walk around and just enjoy fresh air. If you walk pass the club you could find a two story gazebo for a better view of the water front. Tip. If you crave some dessert, you could find a Playa Bowl location which is only 5 min away. Thank you for reading this and I hope you find this helpful.

Great condo with an even better location. We could not have been happier with our recent stay at Yacht Club 7548! We came in early July and were able to escape our busy lives in Atlanta. The condo has the most incredible views of the harbor not only from the living room, but the bedrooms too. Everything feels new and nice in here since it's been remodeled recently. The beds were comfy and the very clean kitchen was stocked with the essentials that we needed. The community pool was a plus for the kids and they spent hours there. We walked to dinner most nights and can't say enough about how easy the location of this condo is! Overall, great condo with an even better location. - Anonymous , Posted: 07/08/2024

New York Yacht Club to host Team Racing Worlds in 2025

The New York Yacht Club, which sparked the keelboat team racing revolution with the creation of the Hinman Masters Team Race in 2000, will see this discipline attain the highest competitive level in the sport when it hosts the World Sailing 2025 Team Race World Championship, May 28 to June 1, at Harbour Court in Newport.
The first team racing world championship in a decade will be sailed in the Club’s fleet of 23-foot Sonar keelboats in a two-on-two format. While not as widespread as the three-on-three format that is used in scholastic and collegiate racing in the United States and elsewhere around the world, the two-on-two format has won a lot of support with its easy-to-understand scoring format—whichever team finishes in last position loses the race—non-stop action and smaller team size.
“When this came forward, when the bid package came out, we said of course we’d want to run this,” says Susan Daly, co-chair of the New York Yacht Club’s Team Racing subcommittee. “It’s a natural fit for us given our history both with keelboat team racing and having run a team race worlds in 2005 in Vanguard 15 dinghies. This world championship is a great way to kick off a packed 2025 regatta calendar at Harbour Court.” In addition to the Hinman Masters regatta—for which skippers must be 45 or older and crew must be 40 or older—the New York Yacht Club runs three other highly regarded team race events each summer: the Morgan Cup, the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters and the Women’s 2v2. The Club also created the Global Team Race Regatta and hosted it in 2018 and 2022. The Club expertly maintains a fleet of 22 Sonar sailboats that are reserved for team racing and the occasional fleet race regatta. In the four team-race regattas hosted by the New York Yacht Club, spinnakers are used. But the format for the world championship will mandate the jib-and-main-only configuration. A dozen teams are anticipated, including one from the host New York Yacht Club. The remainder will be qualified through their member national authorities. For United States sailors hoping to compete, a qualifying regatta is anticipated in early 2025. The NOR for the 2025 Team Race World Championship can be found here . The next edition will be held in August 2026 at the Gamla Stans Yacht Sällskap, Stockholm, Sweden, and is supported by the City of Stockholm and the Swedish Sailing Federation.
Teams meeting the eligibility requirements set out in the Notice of Race may submit a Request for Invitation using this link .
