HISTORY
Endeavour, a 130-foot J Class sloop, was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith and built by Camper & Nicholson at Gosport England to challenge for the America's Cup in 1934. Having prepared his campaign in Shamrock V, Sopwith was keen to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. With his experience designing aircraft, Sopwith applied aviation technology to Endeavour's rig and winches and spared nothing to make her the finest vessel of her day. From launching in 1934 she continued her preparation by competing against Shamrock V (then owned by Sir Richard Fairey) and the newly launched Velsheda (owned by W.L Stephenson). She swept through the British racing fleet and into the hearts of yachtsmen the world around, winning many races in her first season. Like many before her, Endeavour did not win the Cup but she came closer to doing so than any other challenger.
Endeavour pioneered the development of the Quadrilateral genoa, a two clewed headsail offering immense sail area and power, and still used on J Class yachts racing today. She also had a larger and better designed spinnaker but Sopwith was let down by poor crewing. Just prior to departure for the USA, his professional crew went on strike for more money and Sopwith was forced to round up keen amateur sailors, who had the enthusiasm but not the experience. Afterwards, she returned to England to dominate the British racing scene until 1938 when she was laid up prior to the war.
Over the next 46 years, the Endeavour passed through many hands, her fate often hanging by a thread. Among other indignities, she was sold to a scrap merchant in 1947 only to be saved by another buyer hours before her demolition was due to begin. In the seventies, she sank in the Medina River in Cowes. Again at the eleventh hour, she was bought for ten pounds sterling by two carpenters who patched the holes in her hull with plastic bags and got her afloat again. In the early eighties, Endeavour sat in an abandoned seaplane base in southern England. She was a complete wreck, a rusting and forlorn hulk with no keel, rudder, ballast or interior.
REBUILD In 1984 American yachtswoman Elizabeth Meyer bought Endeavour and undertook a five year rebuild. Since the hull was too fragile to be moved and was miles away from any boatyard, Meyer had a building constructed over the boat and hired welders to restore the hull. Endeavour's missing keel and ballast were rebuilt, the steel frames and hull plating repaired and replaced where necessary, and a new rudder fabricated. The newly seaworthy hull was launched and towed to Holland where it was put on a barge and transported to the Royal Huisman Shipyard. There, the mast, boom and rigging were designed and built, the engine, generator and mechanical systems installed and the interior joinery completed. All told, an inconceivable amount of work, love and agony went into achieving Endeavour's present level of perfection. Endeavour sailed again, on June 22, 1989, for the first time in 52 years.
Between 1989 and 1999 Endeavour cruised extensively and competed in numerous races, creating a wonderful spectacle In April 1999, history repeated itself when she was joined by Shamrock V and Velsheda to compete in the Antigua Classics Regatta, bringing in a new era of J Class sailing a sight not seen in over 60 years.
MODERN RACING American, L. Dennis Kozlowski stated in 2000 "No one truly owns Endeavour, she's a part of yachting History, I'm delighted to be the current caretaker." Endeavour, Velsheda and Shamrock raced together at the J Class Regatta for the first time in UK waters after more than 65 years. Endeavour won both regattas after close racing between the yachts.

Immerse yourself in the world of ship modelling and enjoy a journey back to the age of these marvellous ships with our kit models .
The Ship Endeavour was built in June 1764 by Thomas Fishburn, originally under the name of the Earl of Pembroke. She had a displacement of 368 tonnes with an overall length of 106 feet, a keel length of 97 feet, and a maximum beam of 29 feet. She had a broad rounded bow, a flat stern and was square rigged. Originally she was engaged as a collier for the transport of coal. On 5th April 1768 she was commissioned as Royal Navy ship, given the name Ship Endeavour , and fitted out for voyages of exploration. This fitting out took place at the Deptford shipyard, near London, where she was prepared for her first voyage, with new decks, cabins and spaces being built to house officers, scientists, servants, marines and crew, in all a total of 94 men. The Ship Endeavour sailed round the world under the command of Captain James Cook , setting out from Plymouth, England, on 8th August 1768 and arriving back in London on 13th July 1771. The purpose of this expedition was to observe the passing of the planet Venus between the Earth and the sun, and also to estimate the distance between the stars and to use this information as a way of calculating the parameters of the universe.
The ship was later used by the Royal Navy in the American war of independence and was eventually scuttled with a dozen other vessels off Newport, Rhode Island in 1778.
See how, step by step, you can replicate a model down to the finest detail and faithful to the original ship. We invite you to let yourself get carried away and set up spaces for creative leisure in which you can enjoy this marvellous model ship .

- Description
- Additional information
The Endeavour was the most impressive British sailboat to ever race in the America’s Cup World Series. Built for speed as well as beauty, the Endeavour was created in 1934 by Thomas Sopwith, the undisputed leader of the British aircraft industry. A magnificent model to be displayed as a home or office decor. Master craftsmen handcraft these highly detailed wood models from scratch using historical photographs, drawings and original plan. They are built to scale with high-grade wood such as: western red cedar, rosewood, and mahogany.
They are 100% hand built individually using plank-on-frame construction method and are similar to the building of actual ships. Each model requires hundreds of hours to finish and must go through a demanding quality control process before leaving the workshop.
The Endeavour model features beautiful hand-stitched sails that extends all the way to the masthead. The wooden pulleys keep the complicated rigging tighten. The deck is made out of wood planks that are carefully pieced symmetrically for a beautiful finish. An elongated boom flows from the mast to the stern. There is a wooden cabin located in the middle of the deck. You can also spot a companionway that would lead to the bottom hull. Various wooden winches are placed around the deck to wind up or let out riggings when needed. The model is secured tightly on a solid wood base with a brass nameplate. The mast and sails are folded down for easy packaging and shipping. It’ll make a perfect gift for home or office decorator, boat enthusiast, or passionate collector.

About Endeavour (Half Hull): K1060
Endeavour (Half Hull) | 1934 J-Boat. Endeavour is one of the most graceful hulls ever built.
The J-Boat, specifically the Endeavour, is a remarkable and iconic vessel that holds a special place in maritime history. Designed and built by the renowned naval architect William Fife III, the Endeavour was launched in 1934 and quickly gained fame for its impressive speed and graceful design. It was commissioned by Sir Thomas Sopwith, a British aviation pioneer and yachtsman, with the intention of challenging for the America’s Cup – the most prestigious trophy in the world of sailing.
With its sleek lines and towering masts, the Endeavour was a magnificent sight to behold. It was a true representation of the golden age of yachting, with its intricate woodwork and luxurious interior. The boat was also equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the time, including a hydraulic steering system and an innovative underwater shape that allowed for maximum speed and stability.
The kit contains pre-cut lifts (in alternating layers of basswood and mahogany), a chamfered solid cherry backboard (6″ x 23″), brass nameplate, plans, and illustrated instruction booklet. The modeler learns to glue the lifts, carve and sand them to conform to the true hull shape, finish the model and backboard, and assemble the completed model. Endeavour can be varnished, showing the decorative alternating basswood and mahogany layers, or painted as on the original yacht.

About the Endeavour
The Endeavour has sleek lines and towering masts, the Endeavour was a magnificent sight to behold. It was a true representation of the golden age of yachting, with its intricate woodwork and luxurious interior. The boat was also equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the time, including a hydraulic steering system and an innovative underwater shape that allowed for maximum speed and stability.
But it wasn’t just the impressive design and features that set the Endeavour apart from other J-Boats. It was the team behind it that truly made it stand out. Sir Thomas Sopwith assembled a crew of skilled and experienced sailors, led by the legendary skipper Charlie Barr. This team of ‘superstars’ was determined to bring the America’s Cup back to Britain after a 21-year drought.
And their efforts paid off. The Endeavour went on to win all four races in the 1934 America’s Cup trials, earning the right to challenge the current defender, the American yacht RAINBOW. Despite a valiant effort, the Endeavour ultimately lost to RAINBOW in a closely contested race. However, its legacy and impact on the world of sailing were cemented forever.
After its America’s Cup campaign, the Endeavour went on to compete in numerous races and cruises, setting records and delighting spectators with its speed and elegance. It also underwent several ownership changes and restorations, ensuring its preservation for future generations to admire and appreciate.
Today, the Endeavour is a treasured piece of yachting history and continues to inspire and captivate all who see it. Its legacy lives on through replicas, models, and even a museum exhibit dedicated to its remarkable story. The J-Boat Endeavour is a true testament to the ingenuity, skill, and passion of sailors and designers, and will forever hold a special place in the hearts of sailing enthusiasts around the world.
