I thought I booked a guided tour with skip the line tickets. But the tickets did not include the guided tour. Again, my fault for not reading close enough. Mix up with the meeting time

Mix up with the meeting time, we were told 12.35 but head office had a 2.35 pm meeting time for our culinary tour of Bratislava. Our 5 hour tour was rushed through in 3 hours & instead of the guide ending the tour back at the pickup point she left us at the last cafe stop, so we had to fumble our own way back though the old town streets in the freezing cold & rain to the bus stop to get back to Vienna & got lost in the process, the bus was late.

The guide was really nice and had the…

The guide was really nice and had the best intentions, unfortunately the journey was terrible, it took us ages to get to Como due to traffic so we ended up not going to Bellagio. We felt rushed throughout and to top it up we had an incident in the highway with the bus and we ended up staying there for nearly 3 hours! We arrived back in Milan at 10 pm! Not the bus driver’s or guide’s fault but we did not enjoy the tour.

It was easy to search and book our tours in advance...

It was easy to find, compare and book tours for Athens 30/08/24 and Rome 19/09/24. Information provided was excellent and accurate. They consistently kept me updated with reminders and relevant information ie whether backpacks were allowed or ID was required. They also let me know when my tour of the Colosseum was amended and arranged a partial refund. Both tours went well with excellent guides and no issues. Highly recommend GYG and will definitely use GYG when booking future tours.

This tour was organized by VIETNAM ADVENTURE Tours. Guide Vinh is exceptionally attentive and caring. He remembered every detail about your personal inquiry and didn't leave a question unanswered. He is outgoingly helpful und very knowledgeable about things even outside the tour. A true gentleman always ready to assist even without asking for it. The activities are wisely chosen, interesting and tasty. There was not one boring moment. I have very much enjoyed this satisfying tour and recommend it highly.

Monsanto, Idanhs-a-Velha and Penha Garcia

We did a tour with Francisco to Monsanto, Idanha-a-Velha and Penha Garcia today. It was excellent. He was a wonderful guide and very knowledgeable. He was mindful of us the whole time and took us on interesting paths so that we could get the whole experience and not just a little bit. We could not have had anyone better to show us these stunningly beautiful places. All of them are must see places - the rock formations, the views, the little villages and the buildings on boulders are incredible. It is an amazing tour to do and we highly recommend it. It is so worth every bit doing the tour as on our own we would never have got to see as much. If you want to go then ask for Francisco in Castelo Branco as your guide - you won't be disappointed.

Their customer service don’t care about any issue you bring to their attention- they don’t even read or address what you have written- just generic responses. I am an Airline Captain and very seasoned traveller, and would never use this company again- so hopefully that says enough for anyone wishing to use this terrible outfit.

Forest and sand dune horse ride in Agadir

Described as a forest and sand dune horse ride with english tour guide, it was anything but. Dropped off at and rode through a desolate wasteland rubbish tip, to a the river Souss, saw some flamingos too far away to take any pictures, then the same desolate wasteland trip back. The tour guide spoke no English and was on his phone most of the time, watching tiktok. The only saving grace was I'd never ridden a horse before, which was quite nice. The camel riding tour is exactly the same, which I also did. Do one but don't waste money on both.

This tour was perfect with a solid driver and a very knowledgeable tour guide. The falls were beautiful and the farm stop was great with coffee and marriage cake. Highly recommend.

I purchased tickets to visit the Coliseum and unfortunately a member of our party was unable to go. I asked if get your guide could do a name changed and was refused. I feel this was harsh as the ticket was over £60. With other trips I’ve booked for the group I’ve spent over £1500 and no consideration was made.

Made selecting exactly what we wanted…

Made selecting exactly what we wanted to do simple. Only issue which could be easily fixed, is that as soon as you select your first experience, a clock starts counting down for you to purchase, by the time is selected my last item, the clocked hit zero and I had to start again, bit of a pain. Write them down first then book.

Great guides and a very enjoyable tour. Transportation was very comfortable and the trip was great value for money. Have used the company a few times now and every time the organisation of the day has been faultless.

Do NOT use GetYourGuide company to book tours!

I booked a tour through GetYourGuide for Isafjordur, Iceland, while on a cruise. Unfortunately, due to weather, we were not able to dock in the port, so we were not able to do the Waterfall tour. GetYourGuide provides NO refunds for any reason, if their tour is cancelled in less than 24 hours, even if it is out of a person's control! They are a third-party company. The food was plenty full and may I add delicious. I highly recommend this tour. The 4 hrs seamed to past effortlessly we were never rushed and had ample belly laughs. You can purchase everything from skip-the-line tickets to a private tour to guided hikes. 

GetYourGuide began when a handful of classmates started the website in 2009. They were determined to change the travel game forever. 

The idea originated from a trip that Johannes and Tao–two of the founders–took to Beijing. 

Johannes arrived a day early, and Tao wasn’t there to show him around. 

The two friends recognized a universal issue: Travelers arrive at new dream destinations but don’t know where to begin.

I like GetYourGuide because their website makes it easier for me to start planning a trip.

By searching through their database, I can find everything from unique tours to the top tours and activities worldwide. 

How Does GetYourGuide Work?

Search Desired Location

Most travelers use Get Your Guide to search for guides at their predetermined destination. 

In this case, it’s easy to type in the desired location at the top of the Get Your Guide web page. 

Several tours pop up after searching for the destination. 

Tours with the highest reviews rank highest. From here, I use the filter options that Get Your Guide offers.

If I can’t find a tour from the main search, I select filters like:

• For first-time visitors
• Landmarks & monuments
• Entry tickets
• Family-friendly activities
• Culture & History
• Guided tours
• Viewing points

I often find opportunities I hadn’t thought of, like sandboarding or kayaking through caves.

Choose Your Ideal Tour

Choosing the ideal tour can be difficult, especially with so many options. Keep in mind that the Best-Seller certificate indicates the highest quality tours.

Read the tour description thoroughly, as that’ll give you a clear understanding of what the tour offers. 

After finding the perfect tour, fill out the information like name, email, and credit card details.

I could pay for my tour with PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or a credit card. And there aren’t any hidden fees or booking fees when you book tickets on GetYourGuide.

Once the payment is complete, you’ll receive a confirmation email with all the details for your tour.

Meet Your Tour Guide at the Specified Location

After purchasing my tour, I received an email stating the meeting point to join the tour company. 

Sometimes, the tour operators ask for the local address of your hotel, Airbnb, or hostel. 

When I visited Rainbow Mountain in Peru, we sent them our local address and photos of our passports. 

Some tour guides offer to pick you up, and others specify a meeting place (or multiple meeting points).

Booking tours through GetYourGuide is simple, but sometimes, the local agency is unclear about the meeting point. 

I suggest contacting the tour provider if you’re unsure about the meeting point. 

GetYourGuide Review: My Experience With Using GetYourGuide

Public and Private Tours

Most activities through GetYourGuide are public, but there are some private tours. 

I prefer booking a private tour when I know I want to be in a small group. 

For me, activities in nature–like guided hikes–are more peaceful in smaller groups. 

I use the filters to narrow my search to private tours by clicking See More Categories, then Private Tours.

Using the filters on the Get Your Guide website cuts my results in half, sometimes more. From there, it’s easier to find tickets.

Day Trips and Multi-day Trips

Most of the tours I find through Get Your Guide are day trips. Still, there are tons of shorter or longer experiences.

While researching Peru, I used the Duration filter to see 12 pages of cooking classes, sunset excursions, and viewpoint tickets.

The shorter guided experiences help enrich long days. While planning a day trip, I’ll check out the city tours and popular activities.

Get Your Guide also offers multi-day trips, like the Salkantay Trek in Peru. I wanted to do this hike, but it was a significant investment. 

While I’m sure that booking multi-day trips through Get Your Guide is fine, my travel companions and I still felt more comfortable booking extensive tours with local companies in town. 

Plus, I’ve learned that I can usually save money by booking locally because of the currency exchange. 

Self-Guided Tours 

GetYourGuide also offers self-guided tours that you can download onto your phone and listen to at any time.

These tours come in audio and visual form. I haven’t purchased any of the self-guided tours yet, but I’ve noticed a few things.

On the GetYourGuide website, I suggest searching for “audio tour [location name]” instead of “self-guided tour.” They’re listed as “Other Experience,” which meant I had to click on the tours to check that they were in fact, audio or visual tours.

I actually found it just as productive to Google phrases like “GetYourGuide audio tour Italy.”

It’s also inconvenient to download the tours since they aren’t all housed on the official GetYourGuide app. The tours are created by different agencies that have their own apps.

You’ll download the app ahead of time and then receive a link to access the tour. Most tours can be refunded as long as they’re “returned” ahead of time and not activated.

Despite being clunky, I did find a lot of unique tours. My favorites were the Paris History of Crime Tour and a complete package of US National Park tours .

Transportation through GetYourGuide

Not all travel booking sites offer transportation services. Get Your Guide works with local drivers to pick you up from your accommodation and take you to the airport. 

Airport shuttles are available with a one-way or round-trip ticket. 

I first started looking into transportation services through the GetYourGuide website because I’m planning a trip to Mendoza, Argentina.

Booking a ride this way is surprisingly convenient and cheap, even for budget travelers. 

Tickets to Attractions through GetYourGuide

Get Your Guide is the perfect platform to use for European sightseeing.

For example, Florence is one of the most popular places in the world to travel to and one of my favorite cities.

Florence is chock-full of sightseeing, and it’s easy to book tours through Get Your Guide.

Just like filtering for specific durations, I filter based on my interests.

The homepage of Get Your Guide has four main categories: Sports, Culture, Food, and Nature. 

You can manually select more specific activities by typing them into the search bar or choosing the “Filters” button once you decide on a travel destination.

I love these features because booking an architecture-focused day trip to Pisa one day and a walking tour of Siena the next was easy.

The advantage of touring with a local provider is that they know the ins and outs of their city. 

GetYourGuide App

I love booking tickets directly on the app when on a long bus ride or in the car. 

When I find tours and activities, I can save them to my wishlist. 

Then, I’ll book tours on the guide app or my computer once I return to my Airbnb .

I stay logged into my GetYourGuide account on the website and the app. This way, my wishlist is available on my phone and computer. 

Finding the same tour and tour operators on either device is a matter of clicks. 

Plus, anytime I have a travel-related conversation, it’s easy to open my phone and bring up some of my top bucket list activities.

Skip the Line Tickets

Sometimes, I’m not feeling a tour, but there’s still a sight I need to see. Skip-the-line tickets are the perfect way to see a popular attraction without waiting long. 

The line to see Michelangelo’s David is horrible, but buying my entrance ticket beforehand means more time to explore the city. . . and more time to enjoy wine in the evening.

Unfortunately, sometimes there’s a booking fee for these sorts of tickets.

But sometimes it’s worth the extra booking fees to receive the ticket before others.

One time, I booked a tour in Italy and found the same activity for cheaper elsewhere. I contacted Get Your Guide, and they paid the difference! 

Before you do this, make sure each tour includes the same things. It pays to compare prices!

Easy to Use

More than anything else, I love the easy interface of GetYourGuid’s website and app. They take what can be a confusing process and make it simple. 

GetYourGuide makes finding activities that everyone will enjoy simple, and I can buy tickets within seconds. 

Other travel booking sites don’t always make this process easy. I respect GetYourGuide for prioritizing that.

I may be jumping ahead here, but it must be said. GetYourGuide has a worry-free cancellation policy . 

I’ll go into more detail later, but the most crucial feature is free cancellation within 24 hours of the tours and activities. 

Large Selection of Tours in Popular Destinations

If GetYourGuide didn’t have a large selection of tours, we might not have had this conversation. 

But there are many different tours in places like North America, Europe, and Australia. 

It’s also nice knowing that local companies are getting paid, too, and it’s not bad for the local economy. 

Other travelers will agree that it’s fun daydreaming about travel by looking up tours with a local company. 

Very Few Tours in Some Parts of the World

It’s a bummer that GetYourGuide doesn’t have as many tours in South America and Central America.

I love the rugged travel style of these places, but sometimes I want to do a couple of tours before setting out on the less-trodden path.  

GetYourGuide offers tours to trendy places like Machu Picchu. It skips some of the less flashy destinations, like tours around a town or small hikes. 

One of my favorite Central American countries, Guatemala, has very few tours to choose from. I was there for two months and never opened the app. 

Not Many Nature Tours

Now, this is changing for the better, but I want more adventure activities to choose between. 

Sometimes, when I go to a new city, I want to see what the suburbs are like and what adventures await outside the city limits. 

Simple tours of little-known locations aren’t as popular because many tourists visit to see the big attractions. 

GetYourGuide Cancellation & Exchange Policy 

Things come up that we have no control over. That’s why booking tours with a good cancellation policy is essential. 

GetYourGuide offers free cancellation for their own tours and activities within 24 hours. 

An issue arose while traveling through Europe, so I canceled one of our GetYourGuide tours. I received a full refund, no questions asked! 

Be sure to read the fine print of every tour that you book. There could be different rules for each activity. 

The cancelation process itself is easy. You go to the Help Center and follow the instructions for Cancellation. The form asks for your booking reference and pin. 

There’s less risk when you buy tours that you can cancel so easily.

GetYourGuide is a good service for booking your tour in the most popular destinations worldwide. 

I’ve had good luck with GetYourGuide in Europe, Canada, Dubai, Australia, and even many countries in Southeast Asia! 

There are some spots you should keep your expectations low for.

Latin America is a part of the world that doesn’t have many activities available. Even so, I found quality activities with local guides in places like Cusco and Medellin. 

Conclusion: So, is GetYourGuide worth it?

I always use GetYourGuide when researching things to do in a new location. This site is valuable and worth your time. 

I think it’s the most reliable 3rd party tour site today. I love how they work with locals and aren’t trying to detract from the country’s economy.

One of the most popular online travel agencies that has been gaining popularity ever since it was founded in the late 2000s is GetYourGuide .

GetYourGuide is an online travel agency (or an online marketplace) that sells activities or tours. More like experiences . These are guided tours you can partake in once you reach your destination. One website, thousands of experiences.

Now you may wonder whether they are legitimate or a scam. We don’t blame you for thinking that because that’s what plagues everyone’s mind when it comes to booking accommodation or any other service in a foreign destination. GetYourGuide is pretty legitimate. It was founded in 2007 and has more than 60,000 products worldwide in 150 countries, 22 languages, and 40 currencies.

In case it needs to be more clear, GetYourGuide is a third-party booking site that sells these tours. That means when you opt for a booking, GetYourGuide is the middle man (aka agency) between you and the tour operator or the host of the activity. The whole system works just like a flight booking or a hotel booking website.

All the activities/experiences are divided into four categories. Sports, Culture, Food and Nature.

The food section includes experiences like guided tours exploring street food in the Middle East or learning how to make macarons in a traditional French kitchen in Paris. Wine tasting, making pasta from scratch, exploring tapas bars, and so on. There’s a lot to explore here for those who are super passionate about food.

In the sports section, you can go from zip lining in the city to a guided walking tour of the Madison Square Garden. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone. And in the nature section, you can opt for a dolphin-watching cruise, a trek through the mountains, or even enjoy a sunset by the bonfire. All these experiences so that you can be one with nature.

Finally coming on to the cultural experiences, you can completely immerse yourself in the destinations by learning more about their roots and history. Some of the experiences we discovered here include exploring Berlin’s street art scene, a bike tour through the nooks and crannies of Paris, and changing of the Guard Routine in London.

It’s a pretty robust offering by GetYourGuide. Something that would require hours of researching and planning is available to you at your fingertips through the GetYourGuide mobile app. Or you can even access the website and look up your destination.

All of these activities/experiences listed on the website are run by local companies and local guides. They pay a certain fee to have their activity listed on GetYourGuide. All in all, GetYourGuide is just a reseller. However, some activities are organized and run by GetYourGuide themselves which are listed as GetYourGuide Originals and are known to be of top quality.

How does GetYourGuide Work?

• At first, you start by browsing the activities you like. You can check out their reviews, compare prices, and dig a little more deeper. There are multiple activities/experiences revolving around the same tour. You can pick the one you like the most with the budget that you are comfortable with.
• Specify the number and type of participants, preferred date, and language (if applicable).
• Opt for your preferred option and select a starting time (if applicable).
• Provide your details for the booking.
• If you’re interested in a cancellation upgrade for added flexibility, you can include it in your purchase. (More on the cancellation upgrade later in the article)
• Choose your payment method and finalize the purchase.

That’s it. Nothing too complicated. You can either make the booking on your browser or you can use the mobile app.

The Finer Details

In this section, we will be going through the finer details that makes GetYourGuide stand out from the rest.

1. Everything is laid out

We couldn’t help but notice how each activity/experience is detailed under the ‘Important Information’ tab. Usually, it can be a huge bummer if you opt for one of these only to find out you didn’t pack the right gear.

Not only does it help in managing your expectations but it also gives you pointers and instructions so that you avoid any future inconveniences.

2. Cancellation Upgrade

Most of the activities on GetYourGuide come with a 24-hour free cancellation policy. That means you can cancel your booking until 24 hours before the activity starts to receive a full refund.

However, there are some activities/experiences where cancellation is non-refundable. In cases like these, GetYourGuide has partnered with Companjon Insurance to provide a Cancellation Upgrade .

At the time of payment, you can opt for a Cancellation Upgrade. You’ll have to pay an additional amount and the amount is determined by the type of activity. Note: Cancellation Upgrade is not applicable for all the activities.

With Cancellation Upgrade, you can rest easy knowing that you have the option to cancel your booking for any reason during the coverage period.

3. And the amount is fully refunded. The booking cost + the upgrade cost.

So in cases where your cancellation wouldn’t provide any refund, you can pay a little extra for the Cancellation Upgrade and have access to a full refund in case of cancellation. Kinda like insurance.

One drawback of this nifty feature is that the option to add a Cancellation Upgrade is not only limited to certain activities but also to those who are in the European Economic Area (EEA) at the time of booking. Hence you won’t be able to avail of the upgrade if you are booking from any other region other than EEA.

4. G Originals

If you are looking for quality, always go for GetYourGuide Original branded activities/experiences. These activities are hosted by the nice folks at GetYourGuide and they manage to ensure that the hospitality is always top-notch. The bar is set higher and you are more than likely to end your day with a smile on your face. Apologies if it sounds like we are marketing it, we were just blown away by GetYourGuide’s commitment to it.

Another benchmark for good quality activities/experience is the ‘Certified’ label. Activities/Experiences marked by the ‘Certified’ label are thoroughly vetted by GetYourGuide for quality. The only difference here is that the G Originals Activities are managed by GetYourGuide while the ‘Certified’ Activities are done by a third-party seller.

You can also filter all the activities with other labels like ‘Discounted Price’, ‘Likely to Sell Out’, and ‘Best Seller’. In order to look for a reliable, safe, and of good quality, we suggest filtering your results by ‘Best Seller’ and ‘Likely to Sell Out’.

4. Best Price Matching

You might want to buckle up your seats for this one. If you manage to find your booking elsewhere for a cheaper rate, GetYourGuide will refund you the difference. All you have to do is contact GetYourGuide’s customer care and forward them the link to the site where it’s cheaper. Upon verification, they’ll refund you the difference. No Questions Asked.

However, there are some terms and conditions to it. For starters, the location, number of participants, availability, and inclusions have to be exactly the same as your booking. GetYourGuide will check whether it meets their policy and then issue a refund if the criteria is met. Also, Best Price Matching does not cover discounts you might be eligible for on other sites.

5. VAT Inclusive Prices

Prices mentioned on the site and the app are always inclusive of VAT. You don’t ever have to worry about additional hidden charges or fees. Third Party Sellers who ask you to pay an additional fee during the activity are not legally allowed to do so and you can voice your grievance to customer care.

6. Is it Too Expensive?

Some may argue that going for these activities/experiences locally is a lot cheaper. While we may agree with that, you should bear in mind that there can be language barriers at your destination and a high likelihood of being ripped off in case you run into the wrong person. Hence, we believe booking your activities through GetYourGuide is simply better. And the gap between the prices of booking through GetYourGuide and through local isn’t that big either. You can also avail the different offers/discounts available on-site.

Sometimes you’ll come across situations where you are all set to book the activity well in advance only to find that the booking slots have not even opened up at all. In cases like these, you are bound to find the booking slots on GetYourGuide. If you tend to be one of those who like to stay ahead of the curve by booking everything well in advance, GetYourGuide bookings are the best way to go.

If you look hard enough, you’ll find some of the activities/experiences prices almost the same as the local prices.

Pros and Cons of Booking through GetYourGuide

Let’s be honest. GetYourGuide is not really perfect. Before we jump on to the reviews, let’s go through the advantages and disadvantages of using GetYourGuide. Let’s dig deeper and understand what makes GetYourGuide work its magic.

Pro – You’ll always be supporting locals

Most of us love to give back to the community whenever we travel. It’s also the fact that when you shop local, you completely immerse yourself in the rich culture and great vibes of the locale. And with sustainable travel being all the rage, shopping from MNCs is a big no-no.

While GetYourGuide may come off as a big corporate MNC, you can rest easy knowing that your purchases will ultimately end up supporting local businesses. As we mentioned earlier, GetYourGuide is a reseller. They sell tours operated by local companies, the very ones travelers might prefer supporting. Therefore, when you book through GetYourGuide, your funds essentially contribute to the backing of these local enterprises.

While these local companies do incur a fee for listing their tours on GetYourGuide, the benefits they gain far outweigh the associated costs. This is due to the fact that GetYourGuide stands out as a considerably more influential booking platform compared to most smaller companies. The exposure local businessmen are exposed to on this platform helps them attract a larger number of customers than they would typically receive.

Even the guides responsible for hosting GetYourGuide Original Tours/Experiences are locals.

Pro – You’ll be Spoilt for Choice

GetYourGuide’s website and mobile application are built in such a way that you will be overwhelmed with things to do. So many activities are listed that it basically cuts down your research time to almost nothing. Just type in your destination’s name and you’ll find a myriad of activities/experiences you can book.

Having all your options laid out on a screen is much better than walking everywhere and finding out the rates by yourself. All that energy expended for nothing. It’s even a bigger hassle if the climate of your destination is hot and humid. With all your choices laid out, all you need to do is select the activity/experience according to your preferences.

The website is pretty user-friendly and you’ll be booking activities in no time!

Pro – Authentic Reviews

Customers who have done an activity/experience through GetYourGuide can leave a review based on their firsthand experiences. While this may be normal for an online booking site, GetYourGuide only allows reviews from verified customers. That means if you haven’t made a booking through the site, you won’t be able to leave a review. All the pictures may say they are radically different from each other but they tend to be the same tour hosted by different organisers. Don’t fall for the pictures and make sure you check the reviews before you move on ahead with the booking. Last thing you would want is double booking the same tour while it may seemed like you booked two different tours.

Con – Limited Choices in Lesser Known Parts of the World

As mentioned in the initial part of this GetYourGuide review, the platform stands out as an excellent choice for booking skip-the-line tickets, tours, and activities in major tourist destinations. However, if you are traveling to a lesser-known country, the platform doesn’t really sport a great collection. Christine Rosen is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a columnist for Commentary and a frequent contributor to the magazine’s podcast, and a fellow at Virginia’s Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture. Rosen is also the author of "The Extinction of Experience: Being Human in a Disembodied World," a book that has changed my life.

Every book changes every reader’s life for, at a minimum, reading any book consumes time you cannot get back. But some books have far-reaching impacts. I chanced, for example, upon "One Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich" among my oldest brother’s books when, long ago, he came home for the summer after his freshman year in college. That short, riveting novel by Alexander Solzhenitsyn had quite an impact on me. Until reading it, I had no idea of the Gulag or the vast suffering of those imprisoned in it or the menace of totalitarian ambitions. (I hadn’t begun high school yet so no criticism of my teachers in the 1960s, though it would be a fine book for every youngster in junior high to read.)

Of the thousands of books I’ve been lucky enough to read, very few suggest explicitly that I change my own behavior much less successfully do so. But Rosen’s subtly does just that, and she succeeded even before I had finished it. 

"The Extinction of Experience" is about technology and its many impacts on the world writ large and on every reader. An example: "Our personal technologies, particularly the cellphone , are a massive drain on civil attention." Hard to argue with that, of course, but as one reads anecdote after anecdote and study summary after study summary, it is hard not to indict yourself as a willing and probably unthinking participant in the ongoing conquest of everything in your life  by technology if indeed you are using your phone to, say, spend time scrolling or texting while waiting in line at the supermarket or pharmacy.

Much more broadly, Rosen explores in a compact but wonderfully conversational style the impact on our world of the many byproducts of the accelerated infusion of technology everywhere and all at once, from decline of drawing—by children and adults—the end or handwriting, the exile of boredom, the increase in road rage and pedestrian-on-pedestrian collisions. "A large part of our daily lives has already been colonized by technology as we constantly look down at our smartphones and computers," Rosen noted as she reviews how museum-going has changed radically in the years since the iPhone appeared. And not just that specific set of experiences —everything else too has been, if not bent, then shaped by technology.

No Luddite, Rosen is not inveighing against technology itself.  Like Jonathan Haidt in his important "The Anxious Generation," she is observing but unlike Haidt, Rosen is not focused exclusively on children but much more on adults (and as noted above, she is not making policy specific recommendations though it’s hard to miss her message.)

I heard about the book when John Podhoretz, editor-in-chief of Commentary, called it "terrifying" on the podcast. That raised my eyebrows so I asked my booking producer to get the book sent to me and then inhaled it, looking up long enough to engage my wife and our house guests about specific passages. A fine test of a book, I think, and certainly one that will encourage her publisher. 

In the strongest possible terms, since you are reading this column online, go and order the book. It won’t stop you from checking your phone or getting your news and opinions here. I am fairly certain, however, that you will look at your phone differently when you are finished with "The Extinction of Experience" —very differently.
