Emirates Team New Zealand: America’s Cup Defender Profile
The 37th America’s Cup racing is underway, and here’s a team profile on Emirates Team New Zealand, the crew and their yacht club, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron…
Team profile.
Nationality: New Zealand
Representing: Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron
Key Sailors: Peter Burling (Skipper), Nathan Outteridge (Helm), Louis Crosby, Hamish Bond, Ray Davies
About Emirates Team New Zealand
Based in Auckland, New Zealand’s AC sailing team has had great success in the America’s Cup, dating back to their first win in 1995. Other notable victories include the 2000, 2017, and the most recent 2021 America’s Cup, making them the current cup holders in this 37th edition. They’re successful defence of the cup back in 2017, under the care of skipper Glenn Ashby, heightens the pressure and ups the stakes for this year’s competing teams – the question is, will TNZ hold their defending title?
Team Formation
The Australian win at the 1983 America’s Cup is seen to have opened the door to little New Zealand, who until that time would have been viewed as completely unmatched to go up against the United States in a technology based and cash dependent sporting event. Nevertheless, with backing from Michael Fay and David Richwhite (merchant bankers), the Kiwis entered into their first America’s Cup in Freemantle, 1987 . Since then, the team have enjoyed some well earned victories, becoming the 2nd team to successfully defend the cup twice, winning in 1995 & 2000.
Visit the official Emirates Team New Zealand website for more info on the history and triumphs of the TNZ .
Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron
Established in 1871, the RNZYS is New Zealand’s leading yacht club. Previously the ‘Auckland Yacht Club’, it’s name was changed to “ Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron ” in 1902 when it was granted royal patronage, and it hosts thousands of racing events per calendar year.

Guide to New Zealand
A vast natural theme park of rare, seismic beauty
Heart-pumping thrills abound within the untamed beauty and rich, varied heritage of New Zealand. From wine-tasting to white-water rafting, bush-walking to bungee jumping, here you will experience things you will never forget amongst semi-tropical beaches, yellow sulphurous lakes, hot, sandy beaches, steaming geysers and active volcanoes.
Explore two remarkable destinations on one itinerary with New Zealand’s two main islands – North Island and South Island creating endless choice for a fantastic tailor-made luxury yacht charter vacation. A mecca for adrenaline junkies and backpackers, its otherworldly peaks and spectacular valleys are no secret, yet modern cosmopolitan cities and world-renowned wines and restaurants appeals to visitors looking for luxury.
Embracing an astounding range of the world’s landscapes in perfect harmony, the South Island’s Norwegian-like fjords, snowy peaks and plunging waterfalls form an incredible landscape. The magnificent Southern Alps stretch much of the length of the island with exhilaratingly steep chutes and undulating terrain parks to the picture postcard backdrop of lakes Wakatipu and Wanaka.
Located at the tip of the South Island is Marlborough, one of New Zealand’s principal yachting destinations. Cruise along the coastline of countless tree-lined inlets, exploring the Marlborough Sounds and secluded bays before stepping ashore to sample the famed green-lipped mussels, lobsters and scallops and the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world. Known as the adventure capital of the world, Queensland offers countless head-rush experiences and is the southern hemisphere’s premier ski destination, whilst the gastronomic capital Wellington is abundant in chic bars, restaurants and cafés.
North Island is the quieter and more tranquil of the two islands, rich in yachting history and slick cities, its landscapes comprise of pristine lakes and gleaming white beaches. Raft through gorges and down waterfalls, take a helicopter to a remote section of the Kaituna River, sledge or river-board through breath-taking landscapes and twist and turn through its reaches by jet boat. From the lush forests and black mountains of the Cormandel peninsula to the glorious palm-fringed Ninety Mile Beach, even the most restless traveller will feel invigorated on a luxury yacht charter in the cruising grounds of this uplifting island.
Auckland is the largest Polynesian city in the world and is home to a plethora of shops and world-class restaurants. Step ashore from your superyacht to explore the iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge, and the decadent cuisine on offer with an adventurous mix of influences in Maori, Pacific, British and modern international.

Running National Events
Click here for Back Issues of YBQ Magazine
Yachting New Zealand has regulations in place for National Championship events and other major regattas to ensure there is value in the title of “National Champion”.
Guidelines for Organising Authorities on the steps and requirements to run a Yachting New Zealand approved National Championship event.
These regulations also aim to ensure National and World Championship events are sailed in accordance with the practices and procedures that apply to major events that shall be of a uniformly high standard of organisation on the water and on shore, and all New Zealand sailors can be informed of the opportunity to compete for the title of “National Champion”.
National championship events will be appointed a National Race Officer to review your race documentation and provide race management guidance if required. See Regulation 4.5.4 Yachting New Zealand approval of National Championships and Other Major Events for full details and criteria.
If an event fully complies with Regulation 4.5.4, the winner of a Yachting New Zealand National Event will be officially recognised as the National Champion. They will have their name published in the Yachting New Zealand Annual Report and the list of National champions as well as receive a Yachting New Zealand National Champion certificate. For all clubs wanting to run a National Championship event there are a few steps that must be taken meet the criteria set in Yachting New Zealand’s Regulation 4.5.4.
Step One: Submit an Application A National/Major Event Application Form to run the event must be submitted to Yachting New Zealand no later than 30th June. Once approved all dates will be published on the regatta calendar on Yachting New Zealand’s website.
Step Two: Submit a Notice of Race A draft Notice of Race and entry form must be submitted to Yachting New Zealand for approval before publication, 4 months prior to the event. The NOR must be written using the YNZ Standard NOR template. This template is designed for users to simply input their relevant event information, and ensures the NOR has everything that is required as per RRS Appendix J. Please make sure that you have the correct format and do not use a previous year’s version; it may have been superseded. www.yachtingnz.org.nz
Step Three: Submit Sailing Instructions Draft Sailing Instructions must be submitted to Yachting New Zealand for approval before publication, 2 months prior to the event. The Sailing Instructions must be written using the standard YNZ Sailing Instructions template. The intention is to provide the information in a format familiar to sailors, in the order in which they would need it, and in a language which has specific and accepted meanings. Please make sure that you have the correct format and do not use a previous year’s version; it may have been superseded.
Step Four: Submit an Event Report A National Event Report Form must be sent to Yachting New Zealand no more than two weeks after the event, along with a set of final results. This allows Yachting New Zealand to establish that the event has been run to the standards required, and officially recognise the winner as a National Champion. It is also a means of identifying and addressing any problems and any improvements noted for future occasions.
Other important criteria to note for running an approved national championship event:
- Regulations regarding the Organising Authority’s insurance requirements must be met.
- The race officer must be a Yachting NZ qualified National Race Officer.
- You must appoint a protest committee of minimum 3 people incl. at least one Yachting NZ qualified National Judge. Dispensation can be granted to allow a National Judge on telephone link if necessary.
- A minimum of 7 races shall be scheduled of which a minimum of 5 races are required to be completed to constitute a series.
- A minimum of six yachts must have started in any one race in the series (with the exception of the following classes: Skud 18, 2.4, Sonar, Hansa 2.3, Hansa Liberty, Hansa 303 – Single Handed, Hansa 303 – Double Handed where 5 yachts must have started in any one race in the series).
- All entrants and crew members shall be financial members of a yacht club affiliated to Yachting New Zealand, or be a member of his/her Member National Authority.
Note: contact YNZ if you cannot find an appropriately qualified Race Official as required to assist. We have a database of people who are often looking for events.
Downloads of the required documents and links to useful resources and information are all available on the Yachting New Zealand Race Official and Event Resources page.
