5 Important Points for Ice Navigation of Ships

Navigating in ice waters can be a real task for ships, as the later moves cracking and smashing through the frozen and frigid seas. While moving towards subzero temperature with ice covered waters , the ship’s captain has to be extremely cautious and must pay utmost attention to the type of ice, thickness, and its exact location in the subzero navigation areas. If there’s any kind of misjudgment during ice navigation, a detour from the navigable route would lead to additional fuel wastage and might also get the vessel stuck in thick ice leading to dangerous situation and damage.

The existence of ice on seawater corresponds to a major restraint for ships and offshore operations at high latitudes in both the hemispheres. The sea-ice, which on an average is 2–3 m thick, can be pierced only by specially designed ice-strengthened vessels or icebreakers with an appropriate ice class.

Most merchant ships and fishing vessels which are not ice-strengthened must consequently keep away from all ice waters and sub-temperature areas. In many places, where the concentration of ice is maximum and the ice pressure is highest, even the  most powerful of the icebreakers  have problems with ice navigation.

Ice Navigation of Ship

To avoid such mishaps during ice navigation , an ice pilot and ice breakers are normally provided for commercial vessel operations which help to safely guide the vessels through the ice field to and from their destinations. In addition to the ice pilot being on board and the ice-breaker’s relentless assistance, a few other measures must be kept in mind by the vessel’s crew during the ice navigation.

1.  Manoeuvring in Ice

First of all, it is imperative to understand that if any alternative route is available for the ship, ice water should be avoided at all costs. However, if ice navigation is inevitable, it should be made at right angles to the leeward edge where the ice is loose or broken. While manoeuvring through ice if a floe cannot be avoided then it should be hit squarely with the stem. Note that a glancing blow may damage the ship’s shell plating or throw the vessel off course causing another unavoidable blow.

Entry in ice should always be done at low speeds to avoid any sort of damage. Once into the pack, the vessel’s speed can be increased so as to maintain headway and control so as to never lose all way off and avoid the ice floes to close in on the hull, rudder and propeller.

If the ship is stopped by heavy concentration of ice the rudder should be put amidships and the engines should be kept turning slowly ahead. This will wash away the ice that is accumulated astern and will help the vessel to fall back.

In a close pack during ice navigation, avoid sharp alterations of course and keep the speed enough for steerage way. Full rudder movements should be avoided or used only in cases of emergencies.

2.  Lookout

Always keep vigilant lookout for leads (navigable channel within an ice field) through ice. Additional lookouts should be posted forward or at higher ends for safety concerns. Conning should be carried out from the ship’s bridge to get a better view of the ice accumulation.

Keep in mind that at all times the stern must be observed for rudders’ movement so as to avoid a floe from actually moving the stern towards it. In such cases, it is advised to post men right aft with torches, whistles, walkie-talkies, etc. to make sure that the bridge is informed immediately in case the propeller is in any kind of danger. This is extremely important in twin screw vessels. Reduce speed if the ice goes under the ship.

ship navigation in ice

3.  Engine care

During ice navigation, engines should be kept running at all times and under maneuvering conditions in such a way that the ahead and astern movements can be easily carried out without time delay. Similarly, engine movements from ahead to astern and vice-verse should be made cautiously to avoid stressing the engine mechanisms in low temperatures, which could be unfavorable to the ship’s engine parts. Also, when ice approaches the stern of the vessel while maneuvering  bursts of the engines should be given accordingly to keep ice from accumulating.

4.  Navigation at Night

As far as possible, avoid navigating through ice at night. It is preferred to “heave to” since the leads or lanes cannot be seen. Most ice navigators stop the vessel along the edge of the ice and leave the vessel drifting along with the pack.

At nights, seawater lubricated tail end shafts are in the danger of getting frozen. To avoid from freezing, vessels with single screws should have their aft peak tank filled with water and have it kept warm by means of steam hose injection, or other alternative means. The vessel should keep her engines running with propeller on low RPM so as to avoid seizure by ice.

ship ice navigation

5.  Anchoring

Anchoring in heavy concentrations of ice should be avoided; if ice is moving then its force may break the cable. When conditions permit, anchoring can be carried out and it must be done in light brash ice, rotten ice or widely scattered floes with the main engine on immediate notice. Anchor should be brought in as soon as the wind threatens to move ice onto the vessel.

Even with the advent of new techniques and technologies for ice navigation such as radar sensor images through cloud cover, infra-red images, and satellite images for a larger view of the surroundings around the vessel, it is vital to understand that ship’s operations of any sort under the influence of sea-ice are not only dangerous but also life threatening, and utmost care must be taken while navigating through such ice areas.

Le Commandant Charcot Wiki

The "Ponant Icebreaker" was named after Jean-Baptiste Charcot (1867-1936) - French scientist and medical doctor, who was the leader of the French Antarctic Expedition (1904-1907) to Graham Land ( Antarctic Peninsula ). He also participated in the following 1908-1910 expedition to the Bellingshausen Sea and the Amundsen Sea, which discovered Charcot Island (named after his father).

The vessel took 3 years of planning and an additional 3 years of building. Its battery system guarantees endurance of around 100 days of continuous operation on that power alone. The hull (number 887) is ice-strengthened and classed PC2 (polar class 2). The propulsion is diesel-electric (hybrid). The onboard LNG Fuel storage is by GTT. The Azipod propulsion units are by ABB.

The yacht is Ponant's first LNG-powered (Wartsila Dual Fuel engines, with alternative battery power) and operated on polar cruise itineraries (Arctic and Antarctica) including remote destinations in Ross Sea and Weddell Sea.

The vessel's propulsion system consists of two ABB Azipod VI units (360-degree azimuthing thrusters). This marked ABB's 100th cruise ship Azipod order since 1995 when this patented technology was first implemented (on the CCL-Carnival Cruise Line 's ships Elation and Paradise ). Next order was in 1997 (from Royal Caribbean ) - 3 units for the then the world's biggest passenger liner Voyager of the Seas .

ABB's Azipod VI series features 6-m / 10-ft propellers and combined power output of 34 MW, resulting in greater maneuverability, fuel savings and efficiency gain (10-15% in comparison to the conventional shaft line systems). By using Azipod propulsion, the Ponant icebreaker ship saves around 700,000 tons of fuel per year.

ABB Azipods as power output varies between 1,5 and 22 MW per unit. ABB land-based experts monitor all units' operational parameters, remotely coordinate equipment analysis, run diagnostics, and predict maintenances. Due to technology's lowered noise and vibrations, the Azipod propulsion also improves passengers' comfort.

In March 2022, ABB MarineCare signed with Ponant a 10-year agreement (until 2032) to provide 24/7 support and services (remote diagnostics and monitoring, preventive and regularly scheduled maintenance, and critical spare parts) for the icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot.

On July 3, 2018, was signed a contract between VARD-Fincantieri and GTT (French company specializing in marine LNG shipping) for constructing the ship's LNG tanks. The tanks are equipped with GTT's "Mark III" membrane system (cryogenic liner directly supported by the vessel's inner hull). The patented technology optimizes the payload in very restrained hull spaces. GTT was also responsible for selecting and coordinating subcontractors and installing the equipment. Ponant Icebreaker's fuel tanks have total LNG capacity 4500 m3, which makes it capable to run for 60 days without bunkering (the entire cruise route) using only LNG.

In August 2018 was contracted Wartsila (Finnish corporation specializing in marine manufacturing and services) to provide vessel's dual-fuel engines (model 31DF). The cruise ship operates primarily on LNG,(liquefied natural gas). Its powerplant consists of all six 31DF engines (4x 14-cylinder plus 2x 10-cylinder). Wartsila also will manufacture and install its gas fuel supply system and navigation equipment (Wartsila Nacos Platinum package). All Ponant ships are fitted with Wartsila-made engines.

The vessel's construction officially started on November 14, 2018, with the traditional steel-cutting ceremony held at VARD Tulcea shipyard (Romania) . On December 14 was held vessel's keel-laying ceremony.

On March 18, 2020, the vessel (yard/hull number 887) left VARD Tulcea and headed for VARD Soviknes Shipyard ( Alesund Norway ) for outfitting. The towed hull (+superstructure steelwork) arrived at VARD Soviknes on April 28th.

The ship's delivery was initially planned for April 2021, but VARD officially delivered Le Commandant Charcot to Ponant on August 2nd.

The cruise ship was officially christened on September 18, 2021, in Port Le Havre France . The naming ceremony was led by the boat's godmother Anne Manipoud-Charcot (Jean-Baptiste Charcot's great-granddaughter). The special event was attended by Herve Gastinel (Ponant's CEO), the ship's two Masters/Captains (Etienne Garcia, Patrick Marchesseau), numerous VIP guests including Alain Ducasse (Michelin-starred chef), Luc Jacquet (Oscar-winning film director), Jean-Michel Wilmotte (architect), Jean-Philippe Nuel (interior architect and designer), as well as employees of VARD, Aker Arctic, Stirling Design.

In spring 2022, in Cherbourg France , technicians of the German manufacturer -4H-JENA engineering GmbH installed on the icebreaker the company's FerryBox (multi-parameter seawater sensor and measuring system) to evaluate the impact of glacial meltwater input to the oceans (specifically, the rising level of oxygen). The system's measurement parameters included salinity, temperature, sound velocity, the concentration of dissolved O2 and CO2 (seawater's acidification and the oceans' CO2 absorption capacity.

'I'm a yacht expert - here's my theory on how Bayesian managed to vanish in 60 seconds'

Experts are continuing to look for those missing onboard the Bayesian yacht, which sank on Monday morning after being struck by a waterspout. Questions have been raised about why the vessel sank in Sicily

As expert divers continue their fierce search for missing passengers onboard the doomed Bayesian yacht , investigators on the ground are trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.

The £30m vessel, believed to be owned by billionaire business tycoon Mike Lynch , was battered by a fatal storm in the early hours of Monday, resulting in it 'quickly' capsizing into the depths of the Sicilian sea. Fifteen people have survived the freak accident, however six are still unaccounted for.

Those feared to be trapped inside the wreckage are Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah , Morgan Stanley Bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, along with jewellery designer Neda Morvillo and her husband Chris Morvillo, who is a partner at Clifford Chance law firm.

Tragically, one crew member - chef Recaldo Thomas - has been confirmed dead. Some reports suggest that the boat's aluminium mast, reported to be the world's second tallest, snapped clean in half amid the 'waterspout' - rotating columns of destructive wind over water.

While this is yet to be verified, a yacht expert argues that the humongous mast could have played a major part in the sinking.

The superyacht was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with its navigation status as "at anchor". Dan Green, 51, Research & Investigations lead at eSysman SuperYachts - a team made up of yacht crew who share insights on the vessels - said the 75m mast can cause issues in extreme weather .

"With bare poles (meaning no sails), the wind could have blown against the rig sideways to her anchor position causing the vessel to heal over (or lean) heavily," Dan told the Mirror . The UK-based expert explained that this type of superyacht has a lifting keel, which is ballasted - the main structural backbone of the ship filled with heavy material, which could have been raised, having a knock-on effect on the boat's stability.

"When these vessels are at anchor, especially in shallow areas, the keel is lifted to increase the draft (depth) to allow them to anchor or dock in marinas," he explained. "The keel when lowered increases the stability of the vessel.

"Especially when the yacht is underway using sails, as it counters the effects of the wind trying to push the vessel over. However it increases the draft (depth) of the yacht making it hard to get into some marinas (without hitting the sea bed/marina bottom).

"The lowered keel can increase the yacht's draft (depth) by 100 per cent. So, the keel is designed to be lifted up into the hull of the yacht. This allows them into more shallow water and marinas - however when raised, this reduces stability as the centre of gravity is raised, as the keel is also weighted with lead.

"It has an adverse effect on the stability of the yacht. Another effect of the keel being in the up position is the vessel will not self-right if it leans far over.

"If you add to that the possibility of hatches being opened on the vessel that would explain why it's saying so quickly." He added: "I would be very interested to know if the keel is in the up or down position - searchers should be looking at the position of the keel."

Survivor James Catfield, who captained the boat, said on Tuesday: "We didn't see it coming." He was described as "limp" as he waited outside an emergency room after he was freed from the sunken vessel .

Meanwhile a local witness in Porticello said: "That vessel was all lit up. At around 4:30 in the morning, it was gone. A beautiful vessel where there had been a party. A normal holiday day spent happily at sea turned into a tragedy. The vessel was not far from the port. It would have taken very little to raise the anchor and head for the port. Evidently they were surprised by the storm that suddenly hit and they were unable to avoid the sinking."

Matthew Schanck, Chairperson for the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the sinking would have likely happened 'very, very quickly'. Highlighting the rarity of such an incident, he explained: "There isn't really much the captain or the crew could do to prepare for these events given how rare they are.

"Reports that people who were in the life raft have had to enter the life raft from the water, and that indicates to me that this emergency has happened very, very quickly. People haven't had time to enter the life raft from the vessel, they've had to enter from the water.

"My understanding is that the flare has gone up from the life raft, according to the reports. We don't know if the vessel had time to send out any electronic distress signals, to use its radio or any other equipment to alert the authorities, but the eyewitness accounts from the shore and the anchorage state they saw the red flare.

"One of the captains from the anchorage said he saw the vessel there one minute and then the next minute the vessel was gone and all he saw was the red flare which indicates to me that this has been a catastrophic incident which has gone very quickly."

Mr Schanck also told GB News: "It's sort of unprecedented, really, to have a vessel of that size, being certified and commercially operated, to suffer such a significant event in weather that was pretty severe by all accounts, but should have been within the limits of the vessel itself."

Boatanicals Boat | 37' Stamas 2016

Check out this beautiful 2016 Stamas Aegean 370. She's a big 37 for sure and designed for rough water. Stored since new in a high and dry, this 2nd owner boat shows very well. She has twin Yamaha 350's with warranty remaining on the fly wheels for peace of mind. When the current owner bought the boat, the first thing he did was install a very reliable Westerbeke 5Kw Genset w/350 hrs, replacing the far from reliable Kohler. Engines and Genset serviced 2/2024 so she's ready to fish!
