Houseboat Vs Yacht (Differences & Comparison)

August 30, 2022

Houseboat Vs Yacht (Differences & Comparison) | LakeWizard

For most people, a houseboat and a yacht refer to the same thing. But is that the case? This houseboat vs. yacht comparison guide has the answer.

If you are looking to spend some of your time living on the water, you can either purchase a houseboat or a yacht. After all, they are the same thing, right? Not exactly. Houseboats are yachts are two different water vessels.

A houseboat is more of a floating house. It’s specifically built for permanent residence in water. And while it can move around, most houseboats spend the majority of their time moored to a port. Yachts, on the other hand, are designed for leisurely water activities like racing and vacations.

In this houseboat vs. yacht comparison guide, we will take a closer look at how these two water vessels compare. We will explore their designs, the different types available, their floor plans, and their pricing. And by the time you finish reading this guide, you will have a clear idea of the differences between a houseboat and a yacht. Also, this guide will help you to know the right choice for your needs.

We aim to provide our readers with informative, well-researched, and trustworthy content. And this is made possible thanks to our ever-dependable team, composed of respected journalists, experienced researchers and various other experts, drawn from different specializations. So, whenever you come across any type of content piece on our site, you can rest assured that the information you are getting is credible.

Table of contents

One of the main differences between a houseboat and a yacht is their design or appearance. If you take a closer look at a houseboat, you will notice it resembles something that looks like a floating home. And this explains why it’s called a houseboat. It’s a combination of a small house and a boat, thus the name.

A yacht, on the other hand, looks like an ordinary boat. Hence, it’s almost impossible to confuse the two, in terms of appearance, since they are considerably different.

A notable difference in their appearance is the hull. Considering that different water vessels come with different types of hulls, this is also the case with these two. For a houseboat, you will notice that it has a flat bottom hull. The flat bottom hull is designed to enhance its stability in the water since it spends the majority of its time docked alongside a pier, berth, or slip.

On the other hand, yachts come with V-shaped hulls. The V-shaped hull is designed to enhance the vessel’s agility and speed. Unlike houseboats, yachts spend most of their time moving around on the water. And this explains why they come with this type of hull design.

So, if you come across a water vessel that has a flat-shaped hull, it’s highly likely you will be looking at a houseboat. On the other hand, if it has a V-shaped hull, the chances are it’s a yacht or other similar water vessels built for agility and speed.

But, it’s also worth mentioning that some high-performance boats like tournament waterski boats also have flat-bottomed hulls. This hull design is to enable them to skim smoothly on the water surface.

Similar to other water vessels, houseboats and yachts come in different types, shapes and sizes. So, if you are looking to purchase any of these two water vessels, here are the different available types.

There are two main types of houseboats. These are static or non-cruising houseboats and bluewater or cruising houseboats. Each of these two types is built for a specific purpose and utilization.

Static Houseboats

As their name suggests, static households are not built for moving around. Most of the time, they are anchored or moored to a designated spot, which may be a dock or marina. Static houseboats are the most popular out there.

Non-cruising houseboats come equipped with almost all the modern conveniences that you would find in a normal house. However, these boats like propelling mechanisms, meaning you can’t move around in them.

Cruising Houseboats

A cruising houseboat is almost similar to a static houseboat, in terms of design and furnishings. But, it comes with a propelling mechanism, which may be a sail or engine. These are designed for individuals that want to travel around in a floating house. They are mainly built for vacationing.

But, as much as you can move around in a cruising houseboat, you can’t operate it on open or high oceanic seas, meaning you can only cruise with it on small water bodies. Cruising houseboats are not as popular as their static counterparts are.

While there are two main types of houseboats, you will come across numerous types on the market, branching from these two basic ones. Some of the different kinds of houseboats that you will find on the market include:

Pontoons are flat-looking cruising houseboats, mainly made from materials like wood, marine-grade aluminum, plastic, steel or fiberglass. They are mainly designed for vacationers. Pontoons are popular among houseboat lovers because of their practicality, stability and affordable prices. Also, they are easy and safe to operate and their maintenance costs are minimal.

Barges are large houseboats, which can be moved around or permanently anchored at the bay. Barges are the most popular houseboat styles due to their generous amounts of storage space. A conventional barge can accommodate approximately 10 people, making them ideal for families.

Trailerable

Trailerables are houseboats with a narrow and long design. Their narrow design makes them ideal for cruising small river systems and canals. Its name comes from the fact that you can tow it with a vehicle and move it around since it’s lightweight. Trailerables are smaller than the majority of other houseboats. But, if you only wish to spend a short amount of your time in the water, then a Trailerable will be the ideal vessel.

Floating Home

A floating home is a non-cruising houseboat, ideal for people who don’t want to cruise around in their boats. It’s a great retirement home for someone who wants to spend the majority of their time staying on the water. Floating homes are among the cheapest houseboats. They are affordable to build and easy to maintain.

River Houseboat

If you are planning to be living permanently on water, then you should consider building or buying a river houseboat. Houseboats are usually made of fiberglass. Also, they are customizable, meaning you can have them built according to your specifications. River houseboats and you can furnish them with various conveniences.

Full hulls are popular houseboats that you will mainly find in the U.S. Full hulls come with a spacious interior, meaning they can accommodate several people. And thanks to their design, they have higher buoyancy, meaning they can handle rougher waters better than most other types of houseboats.

Just like houseboats, yachts come in different types. Yachts can be categorized based on size and purpose, among others. Let’s take a closer look at the different yachts that fall under each of these categories.

When it comes to size, you can buy a smaller yacht, medium-size yacht, mega yacht or a super yacht. As you may expect, the bigger the yacht, the more it’s going to cost you to buy and maintain.

Smaller Yachts

Smaller yachts range between 10 meters to 20 meters. The majority of smaller yachts are usually privately owned. They are mainly used for water recreational activities like water sports or cruising. These yachts can be sail-driven, motor-driven or a combination of both.

Medium-sized Yachts

Medium-size yachts range from around 20 meters to 30 meters. They are ideal for tourist groups or bigger families. Medium-sized yachts may have a small crew for operating and maintaining them.

Super Yachts

These yachts measure around 30 to 50 meters long. They come with several nice features like sky lounges, Jacuzzis, bars and dining rooms. They can be sail-driven or motor-driven. Superyachts also have a professional crew for serving the people on board.

Mega Yachts

These are the biggest yachts currently. They are usually owned by super-rich individuals since they are quite costly. Some are also owned by organizations that offer water tourism.  Megayachts measure around 50 meters long or even more. Similar to superyachts, mega yachts also have a dedicated crew that works round the clock. They are also adequately outfitted with numerous luxurious facilities and amenities like cafeterias, swimming pools, suite rooms, restaurants, gyms, conference banquets and pubs, just to name a few.

Different yachts are built for different purposes and target markets. Some of the different yachts that fall under this category include:

Cruiser Yachts

As their name suggests, these yachts are mainly built for moving around or vacationing. Cruiser yachts come in different types and sizes. They are built for long-distance trips. Luxury yachts usually fall under this category.

Sports Cruisers

These yachts are built for short fast traps and water sports activities. They are quite compact and smaller in size than most of the other yachts. And as you may expect, their accommodation spaces are also limited.

Fishing Yachts

Fishing yachts are purposely built for fishing and leisurely activities. They come with adequate space for storing fishing gear. These yachts come with open decks, to make fishing easier. While you can use them in various fishing spots, they are not allowed for deep-sea fishing.

Expedition Yachts

If you love exploring or touring using water vessels, then expedition yachts are the perfect fit for you. They are built for long-distance water trips and vacations. Expedition yachts are given permission to explore remote and uncharted locations, which is usually not the case with cruiser yachts.

Trawler Yachts

Trawler yachts are also fishing vessels. However, they are built for large-scale or commercial fishing. But unlike ordinary fishing yachts, trawler yachts come with some comforts like sleeping bunks, since the crew may spend several months fishing.

Comfort and Livability

You can live on both a houseboat and a yacht. However, yachts tend to be more expensive compared to houseboats per square footage. Therefore, for the average person, a houseboat provides the most practical, affordable and convenient option.

Houseboat Floor Plan

The floor plan of a houseboat resembles that of a conventional house. As for the yacht, its floor plan resembles that of a conventional boat. For a houseboat, there will be a living room, bathroom, bedrooms and a fully-equipped kitchen, meaning it accommodate an entire family.

Considering that houseboats have a shape that is almost similar to that of a residential home, you will notice that their layouts are also similar. So, in case you live in an area where property prices are too high, you can simply opt for a houseboat. You will have almost similar living quarters at an affordable cost.

Yacht Floor Plan

As earlier mentioned, yachts are mainly designed for leisure activities like water sports, boat parties, fishing and weekend getaways. Therefore, they are mainly designed for vacationing and not long-term living in the water.

As for the floor plan, its layout will be similar to that of a boat. However, a yacht will come with more luxury features and comforts compared to a conventional boat. For instance, most speedboats don’t have indoor living spaces. They usually come with a captain’s seat and a bench. Some may also have a low table, but this feature is quite rare in speedboats.

A yacht, on the other hand, will have several luxurious features, which you can’t find in a speedboat. The main issue with yachts is that interior space is quite limited. While it may appear posh and luxurious, it lacks enough space, meaning it’s not ideal for long-term living on the water. Also, yachts tend to have limited headroom, compared to houseboats.

When you compare the two, you will conclude that a houseboat will be cheaper per square footage, compared to a yacht. If you browse the prices for these two water vessels of comparable size, you will notice that a yacht will cost you considerably more than a houseboat.

Wrapping It Up

A houseboat and a yacht are similar in various ways. Both are built for people that want to spend time in the water. But, they also have considerable differences. A houseboat is more of a floating house, designed for those who want to establish a permanent residence on water. Yachts, on the other hand, are ideal for recreational purposes. So, if you are looking to settle permanently close to a water body, then a houseboat will be the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you are planning on going for a vacation or other water-based recreational activities, then a small yacht will serve you well.

Aerial ropeway

yacht house boat

A unique installation for central Russia, an aerial ropeway spans the Volga, connecting Nizhny Novgorod with Bor. The scenic service is very frequent, although somewhat pricey for such a short distance (90 RUR, as of 2016).

Outside of the cities, there are a number of important monasteries within Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, such as Makaryev Monastery (across the Volga from Lyskovo), or the Diveyevo Monastry not far from Sarov, in the southwest of the province.

Russia's Golden Ring is nearby and its prominent attractions at Vladimir and Suzdal can be daytripped from Nizhny Novgorod by bus.

The next major stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway are Vladimir to the west and Kirov to the east.

Boat explodes in Marina del Rey

100-foot yacht explodes in marina del rey.

A boat was completely destroyed in a massive fire in Marina del Rey.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. - A boat is completely destroyed after exploding in Marina del Rey .

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a call in the 13800 block of Bora Bora Way a little after 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18.

Firefighters say two people safely got out of a 100-foot-long yacht. Neither were hurt in the massive fire, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

SkyFOX was over the scene around 8:45 p.m. when the boat was engulfed in flames.

A boat was destroyed in a fire in Marina del Rey. It is unknown if people were inside the boat at the time of the explosion.

As of late Wednesday night, officials did not say what caused the boat to catch fire.

This is a developing story. Tune in to FOX 11 News at 10 p.m. and Good Nite LA at 11 p.m. for the latest.

12 adults, 11 children rescued after boat runs aground in Boston Harbor

BOSTON (WHDH) - Emergency crews rescued 12 adults and 11 children Wednesday evening after a boat ran aground in Boston Harbor.

A Massachusetts State Police spokesperson said the incident happened at 6 p.m. at Rainsford Island.

Boston police and state police personnel responded. Though everyone was rescued, a Boston EMS spokesperson said one adult was taken to an area hospital after she suffered a shoulder injury.

A Somerville youth hockey team was having a good time aboard the La Bella Vita boat when the vessel hit a cluster of rocks near the island. A hole was ripped in the hull of the boat.

The marine towing company, Sea Tow, responded and worked to try to recover the boat that ran aground. Though police said crews stabilized the vessel, they were not able to fully salvage it.

On Thursday, all that could be seen peeking out of the water was the boat’s flybridge, due to the high tide. However, it was low tide when the boat hit the rocks Wednesday.

A Sea Tow representative said crews plan to return to Rainsford Island as soon as possible in hopes of towing the boat to shore.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police had assumed control of the investigation into the incident.

Fort Myers Beach: Boat crashes into Matanzas Pass Bridge...again.

FMB Boat Crash 3.png

UPDATE: 12:40PM

The Florida Department of Transportation says the damage caused by the shrimp boat was limited to "scrapes to the paint on the outside beam".

The bridge will remain open.

UPDATE: Tuesday, September 17th

On Tuesday, the Florida Department of Transportation confirmed that the Matanzas Pass Bridge was hit by the same shrimp boat that crashed into it on Monday.

A report on Tuesday described the boat's outrigger making contact with the bridge after which the shrimp boat then backed away.

FDOT says that a marine unit reported no visible damage to the bridge, and the bridge remains open.

The department has dispatched a bridge inspection team to assess the bridge and document any damage.

UPDATE 3:22 P.M.:

All lanes are back open on the Matanzas Pass Bridge.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A shrimp boat crashed into the Matanzas Pass Bridge Monday morning, leading to a complete shutdown of the bridge for several hours.

The incident occurred when the Captain Jack shrimping boat’s outrigger became lodged underneath the bridge.

FMB Boat Crash.png

Watch FOX 4's Anvar Ruziev's full coverage here:

Deputies say there is no major damage, and no injuries. The Florida Department of Transportation said the closure was necessary to allow inspectors and the Coast Guard to inspect the bridge following the crash.

FMB Boat Crash.png

Deputies rerouted traffic and marine activity.

"This incident will cause delays and we appreciate the public’s patience as we work to ensure safety in the area," FDOT said.

David Richardson, captain of Sundance Sailing, witnessed the crash from the dock. "Oops as we say in captain land," Richardson commented. "There were a couple of thumps, bangs, and a crash with broken metal."

Some neighbors found the collision nostalgic, "It reminds me of the old days when we used to have a swing bridge that got stuck open all the time," said Fort Myers Beach resident Sam Laurie. "But it's new for a shrimp boat to run into it."

Shrimp boat crew members familiar with navigating the bridge explained how the crash could have happened. Tyler Adams, a shrimper, shared that when passing under the bridge, they usually lower the outriggers using winches to fit beneath the structure.

"Sometimes we don't get it all the way down and hit the outrigger on the bridge," Adams said.

The boat’s owner, Chris Gala, provided further insight, explaining that the length of the boat’s outriggers was 65 feet, the same as the maximum clearance height of the Matanzas Pass Bridge. While the crew was instructed to wait for a support boat to assist them, they decided to attempt the crossing without help, a decision that Gala believes may have led to the accident.

The crew plans to attempt another crossing under the bridge Monday evening, this time waiting until low tide.

The Playpen is a popular area for boaters in the summertime, located between Oak Street Beach and Navy Pier.

Two people from the boat refused medical treatment, but one was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, and another was in serious condition, CFD said.

It's not immediately clear why the boat crashed.

Video of the scene was captured by a Citizen app user.

Five ambulances responded to the incident.

In June, a 58-year-old man died after falling from a boat in the Playpen .

And, in 2022, a woman lost both her legs in a boating accident in the area.

Wisconsin wake boat bans, neighbors pitted against each other

Wisconsin wake boat bans has neighbors heating up.

A water war is still heating up in Wisconsin. A new kind of powerboat is prompting a wave of local ordinances all over the state.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Wis. - Summer may be winding down, but a water war is still heating up in Wisconsin. A new kind of powerboat is prompting a wave of local ordinances all over the state.

There is hardly a more sensitive issue on Wisconsin lakes than so-called "wake boats" – boats designed to make bigger waves for water sports.

SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News

It's unclear if lawmakers will tackle the issue at the state level, but in one small town after another, residents say they can't afford to wait. And wake boat owners are feeling singled out.

"We’re trying to be responsible, respectful boaters," said Corey Kincaid, who is raising three boys on Blue Spring Lake in southeast Jefferson County .

In recent months, Kincaid said neighbors have been recording him and his boys when they're on the lake. He said their affinity for competitive wakeboarding has made them targets.

"They’ve been filmed and kind of somewhat harassed," he said. "You know, we just don’t want people hating us."

Minutes after Kincaid gave the FOX6 Investigators a ride in his wake boat, we sat down for an interview with one of his neighbors, Ryan Tobiasz.

"We have one boat that goes back and forth and back and forth," Tobiasz said, referring to Kincaid's boat, which he said makes repeated passes within a short distance of his shoreline. "We have said, ‘Hey, back off. You’re coming in too close.'"

Tobiasz believes so-called wake boats like Kincaid's are doing damage to the lake his family has called home for generations.

"If the lake is damaged, if the bottom is going to be damaged, the shorelines are going to be damaged, that’s going to impact all of us," Tobiasz said.

yacht house boat

That is why he and others want to restrict their operation on the public lake in southeastern Jefferson County , which covers about 150 square miles.

"You can see across the lake here," Tobiasz said. "It’s very small."

With a mean depth of just seven feet , wake boat critics say Blue Spring Lake is especially vulnerable to the slow, plowing speeds typically associated with wakesurfing, which requires a boat to operate with its bow pointed up.

"And that prop wash going down and scouring the bottom of the lake," Tobiasz said.

What is wakesurfing?

Wake surfing relies on special fins that push the wake to one side, creating a wave big enough to surf without a rope. However, Kincaid's boys don't wakesurf – they wake board .

"Seems like there’s a lot of confusion," Kincaid said.

Wakeboarding requires faster speeds, meaning the boat levels out on the water. It also relies on divided wakes and the use of a tow-rope. Some say it's more like waterskiing than wakesurfing.

Still, as Kincaid's boys get older, they are learning to master more complicated wakeboard tricks.

"That’s kind of where you need a bigger ramp, you know," Kincaid said.

That is where his wake boat comes in handy. It automatically draws lake water into built-in ballast tanks inside the hull.

"We have to go slow for a second to get the ballast on," Kincaid said.

The onboard water makes the boat heavier, which makes the waves produced by the boat's movement bigger.

yacht house boat

"That’s the big controversy," Kincaid said.

In other words, it's not necessarily the sport that matters.

"It’s the boat," Tobiasz said.

"I think anyone who chooses a boat such as a wake boat for a lake that may not be suited for ballast boating may not have made a good decision," said Jim Hochman, Blue Spring Lake board chair.

Proposed ordinance divides community

That is what prompted Hochman to introduce a proposal to regulate wake boats on Blue Spring Lake.

"It’s going to pit neighbor against neighbor," Kincaid said.

"It’s not meant to be a personal issue," Tobiasz said.

Last month, more than 100 residents packed a park pavilion for the annual meeting of the Blue Spring Lake Management District, some saying they were blindsided by the proposed ordinance.

"How, all of a sudden, is this an issue?" asked Sharon Deguzman, a lake resident who spoke up at the meeting.

"I would like to see some actual facts," said Andy Schuler, also a lake resident.

"We try to be good neighbors," Kincaid said, before his voice became choked. "It's hard for me to talk about."

yacht house boat

Hochman now says the proposal should have been clearly marked as a working draft.

"Got that FOX?" he said, turning toward a FOX6 News photographer who attended the meeting. "I made a mistake."

The Aug. 24 meeting filled an outdoor pavilion in Aurelian Springs Park, a short drive from the lake. Nearly 20 different people took turns at the microphone, some defending wake boat owners.

"You are videotaping 10-year-olds!" said a woman in a yellow t-shirt who did not give her name.

More than half of those who spoke, however, expressed concern for the lake's ecological health.

"When the wake boats go by, the waves come crashing in," said former board member Bill Goldburg.

"It affects the weed beds, the lake bottom, and fish habitats," said resident Brian Randall.

"I started seeing boats going through the water like this," said Eileen Oelke, a 75-year resident of Blue Spring Lake, as she used her hand to demonstrate the signature bow-high angle of wake boats. "Behind them was a trail of brown. Wake board boats don’t have poop. That was our lake bottom!"

Water war waged town by town

What's happening in Palmyra is part of a statewide water war that is being waged one small town at a time.

FOX6 Investigators have obtained a list of 31 communities that now have ordinances restricting "artificial wake enhancement." The first such ordinances in the state were passed in Mequon and Thiensville in 2009, along the Milwaukee River, which banned operating a boat in a "bow-high manner," "use of ballast," and "operation at transition speed." That prohibits boats from fast enough to create a wake, but too slow to level-out – or plane – on the water. Wakesurfing requires boats to operate at a transition speed, rather than planing.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic , just five wakesurfing ordinances existed across Wisconsin . From 2021 to 2023, another 10 ordinances were approved. And in 2024, 16 more communities have restricted artificial wake enhancement.

In all, the 31 local ordinances restrict ballast boating on nearly 200 Wisconsin lakes.

yacht house boat

Many of those new ordinances were crafted with the direct assistance of Jeff Meessmann, director of Last Wilderness Alliance .

"A lot of people say, ‘Well you’re just trying to ban wake boats.’ That’s not true at all," Meessmann said.

Wake boats themselves are not the problem, according to Meessmann. It is how they are used; the artificially bigger waves matter. Meessmann said there is an even greater concern when ballast boats are used on more than one lake.

"Ballast tanks can not be emptied (completely), so they run the probability…they run the likelihood of transferring aquatic invasive species," Meessmann said.

Call for state legislation

Meessmann said he would like to see a state law that requires ballast tanks to be inspected before a boat can enter a new lake. He would like state lawmakers to ban wakesurfing from lakes smaller than 1,500 acres – and he wants state lawmakers to require wake boats to stay at least 700 feet from shore in water at least 30 feet deep.

The water sports industry has lobbied for a 200-foot shoreline buffer with no depth restriction.

Wakesurfing boats on WI lakes; calls to restrict 'monster trucks' of water

Wakesurfing boats on WI lakes; calls to restrict 'monster trucks' of water

A conflict is brewing on Wisconsin lakes as a new generation of powerboats is making big waves. That is setting the stage for a water war in Madison.

"What we’re proposing compared to what the wake boat industry is proposing is miles apart," Meessmann said.

What is most important, according to Meessmann, is that nothing be passed that eliminates ordinances that have already been approved.

"You can't get rid of local control," Meessmann said.

Ordinance on hold for 90 days

Back in Palmyra , lake board members agreed to slow down and study the issue further, but only for another 90 days.

"This group does not want to wait to see what happens in Madison," Hochman said.

That has Corey Kincaid nervous.

"We're just trying to enjoy the lake like everybody else," Kincaid said.

While his neighbors keep a wary eye on the future of a shared natural resource.

yacht house boat

"I’m just really worried what could happen out here," Tobiasz said.

The Water Sports Industry Association did not respond to an interview request for this story.

Meanwhile, a pair of competing wake surfing bills – 2023 SB 680 and 2023 SB 1016 , both sponsored by Senate Republicans – failed to advance in the last legislative session. It's now unclear if lawmakers have any plans to bring them back.

State Sen. Andre Jacque (R-De Pere) declined an interview request, while State Sen. Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk) did not respond at all.

As for scientific research, the University of Minnesota's St. Anthony Falls Laboratory is studying the impact of downward propeller thrust from wake boats on shallow lake bottoms. Many observers have been waiting months for the findings to be released. A spokesperson for the University of Minnesota now says they expect to publish results in early 2025.

Former yacht club commodore died after falling into water at Poolbeg marina, inquest hears

Former yacht club commodore died after falling into water at Poolbeg marina, inquest hears

Seán McCárthaigh

A former commodore of a yacht club in Dublin drowned after falling into the water at a marina on the River Liffey while trying to get onto a boat after a social event last year.

An inquest at Dublin District Coroner’s Court heard the body of John Wedick (78) – a well-known figure in sailing circles and a senior member of the Poolbeg Yacht & Boat Club – was found floating in the water at the club’s marina on Pigeon House Road, Ringsend on the morning of November 19, 2023.

The widower and father of five from Camolin, Co Wexford, who had been commodore of the club on several occasions, had attended a social function to mark its 50th anniversary on the previous evening.

The deceased’s son, John Wedick Junior, who gave evidence of formally identifying his father’s body to gardaí, told the coroner, Clare Keane, that his father was in good health and spirits when he last saw him, which was the day before his death.

He described how his father was looking forward to attending the event at the yacht club as the anniversary celebrations had been delayed for a number of years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Wedick said the deceased would have known the area around the marina and the yacht club well, and he had also grown up in the area.

In reply to a question from the coroner, he said the area around the marina was “relatively well lit.”

The inquest heard that Mr Wedick was due to stay the night on board his son’s boat which was moored at the club’s marina.

The deceased’s son said he understood that his father slipped while getting into the boat and fell in the water.

He confirmed to Dr Keane that his father was able to swim.

In a written statement, a bar manager at the yacht club said Mr Wedick had attended a private members’ function in the clubhouse and was “in great form” and did not appear in any way upset or distressed when leaving the event sometime after 1am.

Garda Paul Fay of Donnybrook Garda station, gave evidence of being alerted to the discovery of a body in the River Liffey at the Poolbeg Yacht & Boat Club’s marina at around 9am on November 19th, 2023.

Garda Fay said he saw a body laying face down in the water between a pontoon and rocks when he arrived at the scene.

He also recalled noticing a large cut on the victim’s forehead.

The inquest heard the victim’s body was recovered from the water by Dublin Fire Brigade personnel and brought ashore at the Jeanie Johnston marina where Mr Wedick was formally pronounced dead at 9:27am.

Garda Fay said CCTV footage from the yacht club had caught the deceased’s last moments and showed him going through a gate that led to a pontoon in the marina before going to his son’s boat.

He described how the footage did not show Mr Wedick falling into the river but that his body was visible in the water afterwards.

Garda Fay said the victim looked fine as he was walking to the boat and did not look unsteady on his feet.

He also confirmed that the weather was dry at the time.

The deceased’s son pointed out that his father would generally wear sailing shoes when he was in the marina but was wearing dress shoes on the night because he was attending a black tie event.

“I’m not sure what grip they had,” he observed.

Although two other people had gone into the marina around the same time, Garda Fay said they had gone in a different direction on the pontoon and he was satisfied there was no third party involvement in Mr Wedick’s death.

“It just looks like a tragic accident,” the garda remarked.

Dr Keane said postmortem results showed he had sustained some abrasions on his scalp but it had not been possible to determine how they had been caused.

The coroner said there was some evidence of chronic heart disease but she did not regard it as a contributory factor in his death.

Dr Keane said Mr Wedick had mild alcohol intoxication, but the levels were “certainly not at the high end.”

Returning a verdict of accidental death, she said the deceased had died as a result of drowning.

She offered her condolences to members of Mr Wedick’s family who attended the inquest and acknowledged how traumatising such an “out of the blue and unexpected death” was for them.

Mr Wedick, who was known as “Johnny”, was also a founding member of the Dublin Bay Old Gaffers Club and was involved in the restoration of a 50-foot fishing vessel, The Bracan Lass, which had been docked in a dilapidated state in Grand Canal Dock for many years.

His love affair with sailing was formed in his youth where he grew up in his grandmother’s house in Ringsend and he joined the local sea scouts at the age of 10.

A former chef who set up his own wholesale meat distribution business, Mr Wedick moved from his home in Artane to Wexford in his retirement but remained actively involved in the Ringsend club until his death.

It’s a certainty: no fishing off the dock at Sharon Jones Amphitheatre.

North Augusta City Council finalized the rules of use for the city’s new boat dock this week.

Council gave its first sanction to the ordinance last month, just ahead of the dock’s formal opening, and the fishing question was the biggest point of debate. Still, the ordinance did get unanimous approval both then and now.

And the ordinance isn’t “graven in stone.”

“This is our initial foray into these rules. We’d like to let these go forward as-is, and if we get citizen feedback over the course of the next year, Council can always re-look these,” North Augusta City Administrator Jim Clifford said.

The dock opened Aug. 27 ; the rules of use will be posted at the dock.

Luxury yacht sinks after catching fire in California

A luxury yacht docked at Marina del Rey in California burned for more than two hours before eventually sinking. It is unclear how the fire started, though it is believed it was caused by fireworks and ammunition stored on board.

According to the yacht owner, there were approximately 1,000 rounds of ammunition on the boat.

The yacht, named The Admiral, is said to be valued at $985,000.

First responders set up a boom area to capture any contaminants, including diesel fuel.
