Safe Haven T-2000 Voyager Luxury Catamaran

Back in April, Storm Kathleen slammed into the west coast of Ireland as a fearsome Force 10 gale, packing 70 mph winds and 15-foot waves. While locals sandbagged their homes and prepared for the worst, Frank Kowalski decided it was a swell day for a boat ride.

Safehaven Fast Power Cat

Evolved from Safehaven’s 75-foot XVS20 monohull launched in 2018, Kowalski used his expertise in building commercial, work-boat power catamarans to design the twin-hulled T-2000 Voyager to offer speed with stability.

“The stability in beam seas is what’s key here,” he says. “While we were out recently in a Force 8 with 40-plus knot winds and 12-foot seas, we were able to stop and leave the boat to drift while we retrieved a drone. It just took the waves on the beam with ease. In a monohull, it would have been rolling so badly you couldn’t have stood on the deck.”

Then there’s the sheer velocity that comes with twin, scalpel-thin hulls slicing through waves. With the T-2000’s pair of 1,550 hp MAN V12 diesels driving France Helices SD5 surface drives, the Safehaven can hit a top speed of 57 mph.

Safehaven Power Cat

“It’s just the most amazing sight, standing on the stern, watching these huge roostertails behind,” Kowalski adds. “We’ve also incorporated retracting swim platforms so you can see the props spinning on the surface, plus valved exhausts that switch between silenced and straight-through. The noise from those V12s is sensational.”

His hull No. 1 demonstrator boat has all-diamond-quilted marine leather, well-finished cabinetry, colored LED lighting, and below-deck accommodations for six in three cabins. Hull No. 2—already sold and due for completion in the next 18 months—will up the luxury factor.

Safehaven Marine T-2000

“It’s going to a client in the Middle East who plans to use it for just himself and his wife,” says Kowalski. The client has specified a full-width owner’s suite with a central, king-size bed and oversized his-and-hers bathrooms and closets in each hull. “He also wants to go fast— very fast,” Kowalski continues. “So we’ll install twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s, again with surface drives, and a central hydrofoil to reduce drag. The plan is for it to hit a top speed in excess of 69 mph.”

The new T-2000 is also designed to go the distance. With the 2,900-gallon tanks, it has a range of more than 1,000 nautical miles at 34.5 mph, and 1,700 nautical miles at 18 mph. Throttle back to 12 mph and range increases to 3,000-plus nautical miles.

Much of this is down to the yacht’s symmetrical, semi-wave-piercing hulls, made of a carbon-fiber-composite construction, with inverted lower bow sections and a double-chine arrangement that projects spray clear of the boat. The hydrofoil in mid position also means that, at speed in calmish seas, the T-2000 rides with half its hull length out of the water.

Safehaven Marine T-2000 Power Cat

To eliminate waves slamming into the bridge deck windshield, Kowalski moved the pilothouse farther back. It also makes for a sleeker profile, giving the T-2000 the look of a single-hull sportsyacht.

The entire helm area gets flooded with light courtesy of the four-panel, angled windshield and quartet of fixed skylights above. To see the boat’s hydrofoil in action, the bridge has a glass panel in the floor that’s also designed for viewing marine life below at night. Most of the windows have half-inch-thick toughened panels to shrug off cascading water.

Safehaven T-2000

In finer weather than typically found on coastal Ireland, the T-2000 has a small flybridge with a helm station and sun-lounge area up top, plus a covered stern cockpit with sofas and table for alfresco dining.

This storm-tested, metallic-red demonstrator is available for around $3.35 million.

Voyager V1040 Flybridge – Boat Review

By David Granville Catamaran design over the years has favoured practicality over aesthetics, and thus limited the hull’s potential appeal. But no more, writes David Granville – Voyager’s new V1040 Flybridge is the cat’s whiskers. Powered catamarans have long been recognised for their excellent seakeeping ability and performance, which is probably why they are the boat of choice for rescue organisations and commercial operators alike. NEW 2024 T-2000 Voyager. 20m High performance, long range blue water explorer catamaran revealed.

voyager power catamarans

The T-2000 ‘VOYAGER’ is a Safehaven Marine designed high speed, long range, blue water explorer catamaran. Its main design remit was for a vessel providing the best efficiency, economy and range in its size bracket at higher cruising speeds circa 30-40kts, but also be equally efficient and economical at lower planning and semi-planning speeds right down to displacement speeds, and to be capable of, due to her large fuel capacity of an extremely long range at these speeds: (1,000nm+ at 30kts and 1,700nm at 16kts and over 3,000nm at 9-10kts). As such Voyager is capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean non-stop. The T-2000 Voyager perfectly fulfils the role of an ‘Explorer’ yacht and will appeal to an owner looking to explore remote and occasionally inhospitable locations but who, on occasion wishes to get there fast and take advantage of favourable weather windows, but not at the sacrifice of comfort and excitement.

voyager power catamarans

Combining potentially a very high speed capability of well over 50kts when fitted with the largest engine options, with exceptionally good seakeeping abilities enabling high cruising speeds of circa 30kts+ to be maintained in even moderately rough sea conditions. Blue water cruising can inevitably mean bad weather is encountered simply due to the long distances involved, and when encountered a true blue water yacht must be able to deal with such situations. Drawing upon Safehaven Marines 25 years of experience in building commercial all weather pilot, S.A.R. and patrol craft, Voyager is capable of true ‘all weather’ operation. The design also draws from Safehaven’s experience in setting multiple UIM World long distance speed records: In 2021 Safehaven set a World record in their XSV20 demonstrator Thunder Child II for crossing the inhospitable North Atlantic from Ireland to Iceland, an 862nm voyage at an average speed of 30kts. As such Voyager will be well able to deal with hard weather, and able to safely weather a storm at sea and do so in comfort, as the interior design incorporates a high degree of luxury in its fit out and will be equally at home cruising and entertaining in the Mediterranean.

Hull Design. The T-2000 Voyager features hydrofoil supported symmetrical semi-wave piercing hulls that combine an inverted bow with traditional topside flare. The inverted bow provides a very fine waterline entry to cut through waves but also maximises waterline length, thereby increasing its displacement hull speed and corresponding efficiency whilst the topside flare keeps the boat dry, throwing spray clear. The bridge deck is terminated 3.5m from the bows to eliminate the possibility of waves slamming on the bridge deck in large steep head seas when inevitably forced to slow down, (traditionally the Achilles heel of catamaran designs). Additionally the bridge deck to waterline clearance is substantial, being a minimum of 1m at the transom in order to prevent wave impact on the bridge deck. Overall the visual design of T-2000 is very graceful being exceptionally sleek, far removed from the typical boxy looks of most catamarans and in side profile has the looks of a sports monohull yacht. A hydrofoil is optionally incorporated which improves efficiency at higher speeds by as much as 20% with little low speed penalty, lifting the hull out of the water at speeds over 20kts reducing drag and resistance. Its design and position being optimised through CFD, as were the hulls spacing which, at a 6.2m beam proved optimum for wake interaction, and 6.2m, (which could be considered moderate for its length) provided the best compromise between static stability and dynamic behaviour in waves. The moderate beam eliminates the sometimes uncomfortable motion very wide beam cats can have in a seaway on certain courses, whereas the T-2000 in essence rides like a monohull that doesn’t roll or yaw in beam and following seas, or slam in head seas. Its moderate beam also makes the T-2000 ‘marina friendly’.

Being fully custom built Voyager can be specified with a range of engines and propulsion systems. Alternative propulsion systems such as Volvo IPS, Waterjets and conventional shaft drive are available where still very fast maximum speeds of circa 40kts are adequate.

With an L.O.A. of 20m the Performance of Voyager for her size is extremely impressive. The first of class being powered by a pair of MAN V12 1,550hp engines and Twin Disc MGX5146A gearboxes with surface drive propulsion from a pair of France Helices SD5 drives. Surface drives were chosen as they provide the best efficiency at higher cruise speeds (circa 35-40kts), and the surface drives props are vented for smooth low speed operation. A maximum speed of well over 50kts makes her one of the fastest boats of her size around, comprehensively fulfilling the ‘high performance’ brief and providing excitement in abundance, yet the design almost uniquely also offers ‘Trawler style yacht’ range and ocean crossing capabilities. Close quarters manoeuvring is assisted by large and powerful twin bow thrusters and twin stern thrusters incorporating ‘variable speed’ capability, allowing the vessel to be held against the quay or marina whilst being tied up or cast off, a real advantage when short-handed or mooring in adverse conditions. The powerful thrusters combined with the gearboxes ‘Quick shift’ low speed function ensure the T-2000 is very easy to operate when berthing.

The RIB is stored very securely high above the waterline for safety in heavy weather. A forward lounging area with removable cushions and table is situated in a well deck quickly drained through the bridge deck by two large 4” scuppers, allowing the well area to be cleared of water in 8 seconds. Each bow is fitted with an anchor and windlass (two anchors for safety) and a bridle system. Large anchor lockers also provide a storage area for fenders, warps etc with the st/bd compartment also housing a workshop. Stern to mooring is assisted by two capstans at the transom quarters and a Hydraulic extending Besenzoni Passerelle fitted to the transom.

voyager power catamarans

A flybridge is accessed from the aft deck via a substantial stainless steel ladder with wide teak steps and hand rail. The flybridge incorporates a two seat helm position, the console being electrically adjustable for height allowing a sporty low seating position for helming underway, but can be raised 50cm to allow standing at the helm when undertaking close quarters docking manoeuvres. A large ‘U’ shaped seating area with a table allows for comfortable lounging and entertaining underway. Each hull incorporates a large dive platform. The aft, side decks and forward decks as well as the flybridge are laid in teak and holy synthetic decking for low maintenance and durability with the side, foredeck and aft deck areas being enclosed by railings .8-1m, high ensuring all deck areas are safely accessed by the crew. The first of class T-2000 is fitted with a valved exhaust system, incorporating by-pass valves allowing switching between watertrap silencers for quite running or straight through, allowing the exhaust note from her V12 engines to be appreciated when offshore emitting a fantastic exhaust sound befitting her extreme performance.

Voyager V625 Getaway: Review

Stunning new aussie trailerable cat with double bed, standing shower and fishing/family layout.

Powered catamaran manufacturer Voyager Catamarans has unveiled a wonderfully finished new 6.1 m trailerable cat called the V625 Getaway. This full-featured hardtop cruiser/fisher has a great hull and an interior layout cleverly designed to maximise the available space.

OVERVIEW - Voyager Cats adds a hardtop cruiser to its V625 line-up Powered catamaran manufacturers have been doing it tough in recent years, as evidenced by the closure of some leading brands. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Some local manufacturers are prospering, including Queensland company Voyager Catamarans.

Voyager is best known for its high-end powered cruising catamarans which start at 10.0m in length and extend through to a sophisticated 13m flybridge cruiser. However, a few years ago Voyager ventured into the trailerable powered cat market with a cabin model called the V625. A single, fairly basic model called the Classic was launched initially, but this was followed by an offshore fishing model called the V625 Sport Fish, and a cruiser/weekender version called the Family Hardtop.

Now, Voyager’s Derek Appleton has combined everything he has learned to date from the design and development of the V625 series to create a family/fishing model called the Getaway – and it’s a beauty!

PRICE AND EQUIPMENT - Flagship Voyager trailerable model has all the good gear Launched at the 2015 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, the Voyager V625 Getaway is an exciting new addition to the trailerable powered cat market. It bears no comparison to the plain, basic fishing cats of years past, but is a powered cat for the modern era with an excellent standard of finish and fit-out.

The Getaway is the flagship of the V625 range, and is outfitted and priced accordingly. There are relatively few options as all the good gear is included – and there’s lots of it.

Key features include the large double berth, port side cabin toilet and shower (with full standing headroom), lock-up cabin, hardtop with toughened glass windscreen and sliding side windows, wide instrument panel, overhead radio locker, deluxe swiveling helm seats on storage boxes, four additional cockpit squab seats, wide side coamings with upholstered side panels, large, self-draining rear cockpit with removable table, twin 180-litre fuel tanks, 60-litre freshwater tank, hydraulic steering, and a boarding platform with ladder.

Fishing features include a plumbed live-bait tank, clever rotating cutting board set-up, ice box/sink, salt and freshwater deck wash, above floor side storage pockets (with good toe-under grip), four flush-fitted stainless rod holders, recessed cockpit coaming rails, and stainless-steel deck hardware throughout.

Packaged with a pair of 90hp four-stroke Suzuki outboards, and riding on an Oceanic tandem axle trailer with electric/hydraulic break-away brakes, the standard Voyager Getaway package is priced from $119,950. That’s a fair sum, but you do get a lot of boat for your money.

Options fitted to the test rig included a power upgrade to twin 115hp extra-longshaft Suzuki four-stroke outboards, an anchor winch, stainless steel framed cockpit awning, full camper covers and electronics – which comprised a Lowrance HDS 12 touch-screen GPS/Fish Finder, Lowrance Link5 VHF radio and a Fusion stereo.

With the extra gear, the Getaway is priced at around $136,700. But for a pair of outriggers, and a barbeque for cooking (both optional) the test boat was ready to fish or cruise.

The Voyager Getaway is the top of the range and most expensive of the V625s. The other models don’t have quite the gear and equipment – but they are significantly cheaper. Consider that the Classic model starts at around $75k for a BMT package, while the Sport Fish fishing version is priced from just under $100k with dual 90hp four-stroke outboards.

All variations of the Voyager V625 will require a trailer with break-away brakes, as the BMT packages will exceed 2000kg – and most models will be in the 2.2 – 2.7 tonne range on a tandem-axle galvanised steel trailer.

INTERIOR LAYOUT - Versatile layout suits fishing and family boating The layout in the Getaway has been cleverly designed for both fishing and family boating. The cabin is particularly well thought-out. Using the depth of the hull sponsons, combined with a higher deck and dash moulding, Voyager’s Derek Appleton has created a remarkably spacious cabin area.

On the starboard side of the cabin there is an enormous underberth storage locker which houses the 60-litre freshwater tank and pump system.

Opposite, just inside the cabin entry there is a toilet and shower area which has full standing (183cm) headroom. So you can take a shower or get changed after a swim in relative comfort. It is a lot roomier in the forward cabin area than comparable sized powered catamarans.

Other features include a double size berth with three cloth-covered berth cushions (so they can be stacked over on the starboard side when not in use) and drawers for clothes, life jackets, etc.

The wiring is hidden in a compartment behind a So-Pac hatch while a clear acrylic hatch in the forepeak provides internal access to the foredeck and dual anchor wells.

In inshore and calm seas it is easier to reach the foredeck by climbing around the cabin sides as the side decks are wide and there are plenty of hand-holds.

The dual anchor wells are large and the test boat was fitted with an optional anchor winch.

A feature of note is a telescopic stainless steel ladder which extends off the bow on the port side so you can easily board the boat from the beach or boat ramp. Great feature!

The forward cabin is separated from the helm and saloon area by a full cabin bulkhead and lockable bi-fold style cabin door. The high dash is part of a separate mould specially created for the Getaway model to increase the headroom in the forward cabin, and to provide lots of real estate on the fascia for flush fitted engine gauges and electronics – such as the big 12” Lowrance HDS12 on the test rig.

The steering wheel is well positioned for the helmsman, the engine gauges almost at eye level, and the binnacle-mounted twin throttles fall comfortably to hand when running the boat in a seaway.

We found the boat most comfortable to drive while standing up and with the bolster on the front of the helm seat flipped-up and out of the way.

Seated, with the bolster lowered, we could reach the helm and throttle well enough, but the addition of a fore and aft slider would have allowed for more back support and improved the seated driving position.

Vision through the toughened glass windscreen and side windows was excellent – though we did experience some sun glare off the dash at certain angles. We have found this to be an issue with several hardtop craft we have tested in recent times. A black rubber matt, or painting the top of the dash in a dark colour may provide the solution.

Storage areas are plentiful in the Getaway. Wide cockpit side storage pockets compliment the large helm seat boxes, co-pilot side shelf and huge underberth locker in the cabin. There is also an underfloor kill tank option for anglers.

Moving aft, the self-draining rear cockpit is large. It stretches 2.75m from the cabin bulkhead to the transom, and is 2.18m across. It is perfectly designed for fishing or family boating – with 720mm of freeboard, great “toe-under” support beneath the side pockets, and the coamings are nice and wide for fitting rod holders, outriggers, and more.

For family outings a table slots into a socket in the cockpit floor and is easily reached by any of the four surrounding cockpit seats. For fishing, the rear seat squabs can be folded down – or removed completely.

At the transom there is a sink/ice box with freshwater shower built into the rear deck on the starboard side, while a good sized live-bait tank (plumbed) and salt-water deck-wash lies opposite.

A bait/cutting board slots into a rod holder in the deck near the bait tank and is cleverly designed so that it can be swiveled into a variety of positions, including directly over the boarding platform.

The batteries are accessible on platforms under the transom, along with engine and pump plumbing etc.

ON THE WATER - Soft ride and good performance from slim but buoyant hulls A good powered catamaran is enjoyable to drive at sea and we expected great things from the Voyager V625 Getaway. We were not disappointed. In smoother conditions than we would have liked the Voyager easily met out expectations for ride comfort, stability and overall performance.

The Voyager’s foam-filled hull is a beauty. The hull sponsons are quite fine and narrow in shape at the entry, but they widen to provide the buoyancy needed for the hull to lift out of wave troughs in a following sea. The pronounced “wave breaker” fairing in the tunnel also contributes to forward lift – as well as reducing tunnel slap at displacement trolling speeds.

The Voyager is exceptionally stable at rest, and solid and surefooted underway. With the hardtop and high superstructure you will get some wind-list in a beam sea, but this is easily correct with trim adjustments to the engines.

The V625 accepts outboards from 70hp, though twin 90hp four-strokes is recommended as a minimum to take advantage of the hull characteristics – and to have reserve power for bar crossings, etc.

The test rig was fitted with a pair of Suzuki 115hp extra-longshaft (25”) outboards which provided ample acceleration and a top speed just shy of 40knots. Twin 115s is the maximum recommended for the Voyagers and more than enough for recreational applications.

VERDICT - A stand-out performer with an innovative design and layout Modern, trailerable powered catamarans are much better finished, and better equipped than their predecessors from the 1970s and 1980s, but few can compare with the new Voyager V625 Getaway. With regard to finish and fit-out, design and innovation, handling and performance, the V625 stands out from the crowd. This versatile, family/fisher cross-over cat is a ripper – and is certain to attract buyers looking for a craft capable of performing more than one role.

In trailerable terms, the V625 is a big rig, but at around 2.4 – 2.6 tonnes complete, it is readily trailerable behind modern 3.0 tonne rated 4WD vehicles.

LIKES >> Clever cabin layout >> Full standing headroom in toilet >> Soft ride with great stability >> Family/fishing cross-over layout >> Excellent finish and fit-out >> Plenty of storage and seating

Discover the Top Power Catamarans for 2024

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: September 10, 2024

Power catamarans have seen a surge in popularity, growing both in size and appeal. These cruise-focused yachts offer homelike comfort, fuel efficiency and user-friendly operation, making them a favorite among avid travelers. Their popularity extends to the bareboat charter market for the same reasons.

In this article, we explore the world’s top power catamarans, ranging from a 36-footer ideal for a cruising couple to a 78-footer perfect for entertaining friends and family. The propulsion options are diverse, including outboards, diesel inboards, hybrids, and even all-solar setups.

Top Luxury Power Catamarans

The following power catamarans are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Fountaine Pajot MY44 : A family-oriented cat suitable for long-range cruising and aimed at owner-operators.
  • Silent Yachts 60 : This is a catamaran that can cruise comfortably for long distances using emissions-free solar-electric propulsion.
  • Horizon PC74 : With interior and deck space like a much larger vessel, the PC74 is perfect for cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean.
  • Aquila 36 : This beefy 36-footer is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran.
  • Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat : A spacious design, this vessel fits the volume of a 130-foot-long monohull into just 78 feet of length overall.
  • Horizon PC68 : This cat has a stable ride, long range, volume to spare and intriguing layout options.
  • Two Oceans 555 : An elegantly simple yet luxurious 55-foot custom with the space and amenities of a much larger vessel.
  • Lagoon 630 : From its open salon to its spacious decks, the Lagoon is a comfortable and luxurious platform.
  • Fountaine Pajot MY5 : A midsize cruiser with serious big-boat space for family and friends.
  • Prestige Yachts M8 : The voluminous 65-footer lets owners customize onboard spaces.
  • Aquila 47 Molokai : Calling all anglers: This cat has 60-plus-knot speed and is set up for serious bluewater adventure.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The  Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent Yachts 60

Solar panels, ocean-crossing range and self-sufficiency define the electric Silent-Yachts 60 power catamaran. If there was any question that the “Tesla moment” has arrived in yachting, the Silent 60 clearly provides a positive response. Consider, for a moment, crossing oceans in silence at 5 to 6 knots without consuming a drop of fuel and never needing to plan your course between fuel stops. Imagine sitting at anchor and running the air conditioning all night, not to mention all the galley appliances plus the washer-dryer, without the hum or fumes from a genset.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the  Horizon PC74  is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36  is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the  Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat  is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC68

Multihull yachts ride differently than monohulls, often counteracting the sea’s motion for a smoother, more stable ride. On the Horizon PC68 , sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, and a Humphree stabilization system with blades reduces roll. Horizon uses SCRIMP construction for resin saturation that maximizes strength with an 111,112-pound displacement. And with a 5-foot-4-inch draft, the PC68 invites island cruising.

Two Oceans 555

With 27-knot speed, house-like volume, an on-deck master and top-tier tech, the Two Oceans 555 is a formidable power catamaran. Dave Jirikovic of HMY Yachts was on a quest. The sales broker was looking for the meanest, nastiest patch of Gulf Stream he could find to show a potential client what the Two Oceans 555 power cat could handle. And just as he had intended to show us, the broad-shouldered power cat didn’t even notice. He even dropped the single-lever throttles back to idle and left the 25-foot-wide Two Oceans 555 beam-on to another set of square-edged seas. The 55-footer brushed that off too. Jirikovic tried quartering into the seas—never a happy angle for catamarans—and the yacht drowsed through them.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the  Lagoon 630 MY  burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The flybridge deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY5 is a standout feature, offering virtually unobstructed 360-degree ocean views and an elevated beach club vibe. Aft of the off-center starboard helm is a spacious area perfect for entertaining, complete with a wet bar, refrigeration center, and ample seating. It’s the most popular space aboard according to the builder. And if the weather turns for the worse, a second helm station in the saloon allows the skipper to pilot the MY5 in climate-controlled comfort.

Prestige Yachts M8

How fitting it was that Prestige Yachts introduced its new M-Line flagship, the M8 , at Portopiccolo, a picturesque yachting village outside Trieste, Italy. Formerly a quarry, the cliff-side area had been chiseled into a clean site rife with eye-catching vistas, much like the French builder’s 65-foot power catamaran and its nearly 3,000 square feet of usable real estate.

Aquila 47 Molokai

With every boat, there’s an origin story. In the case of the Aquila 47 Molokai power catamaran, it starts with MarineMax, which saw people renting boats for bareboat charters. MarineMax Vacations was born. After experimenting with several production yachts, the company decided to build its own: the Aquila line, designed for charter as well as for sale to owner-operators.

Voyager V1250 Conquest

Voyager V1250 Conquest

Author : Barry Tyler

CRUISING CAT

They were an impressive range before, with a reputation for quality and innovation; the release of their evolutionary new Voyager  V1250 Conquest model however, adds a new dimension to an already high-quality Voyager catamaran range.

Stylish in profile and now sporting an optional fully enclosed flybridge, this new Conquest model is if you like a larger more luxury version of their current V1100 Discovery model. It hails a new era in Voyager technology, specification and presentation for rather than simply ‘tarting’ up the V1100 model Voyager designer and CEO, Derek Appleton, has a completely new hull as well as deck and interior design. “The profile lines are still indisputably Voyager,” Appleton explained, “but the enclosed flybridge configuration required a whole new approach to layout and styling. “As well, we have opted for a significantly larger one-level cockpit that, aft of the transom upright, will appeal to the fishermen, swimmers and divers, while forward of this feature it is an entertainer’s delight with room for an outdoor table setting if so desired,” he enthused.

Step aboard and you soon appreciate the fact the V1250 was indeed certainly very different for it offered a new meaning to the word spacious. All at one level, the gelcoated cockpit floor (teak  on each hull, providing sublime floor area but more importantly affording the designer the luxury of moving the transom upright further aft than is traditional.

With substantial stainless steel railings around the perimeter it was a perfect platform for the swimmers and fishermen – and the star-gazers seated on the aft-facing lounge on the outside of the transom upright. The standard and certainly appropriate-height boarding ladder provided good access to the water from what was a higher than traditional transom feature!

As I have stated so many times before, everything in a boat is a trade-off and benefits such as ease of boarding at a marina or pontoon, the enormous storage and kill-tank provision and of course the added floor area that accrues from this style of approach to cockpit and transom design – were infinitely more advantageous and credible trade-offs over what we have come to accept over the years as a traditional catamaran stern with multi-levels that invariably are an inefficient use of space.

voyager power catamarans

Forward of the transom upright, features included the secreted (large!) BBQ within this transom upright, the sinks at each end of the transom upright module, the full-width forward facing aft lounge, an integral 150-litre freezer to starboard of the saloon doors, corner steps each side for access to the foredeck, generous overhead protection courtesy of the flybridge overhang and a solidly mounted shade mesh and stainless steel canopy extension, and the moulded stairs which provide external access to the flybridge. Stairs incidentally which cleverly hinged up to reveal the perfect storage facility for dive bottles, wet gear or table and chairs. With this and the huge lockers in the aft of each hull it was clearly evident that no space was wasted.

Enclosed Flybridge

The flybridge level was a most expansive area of the boat, and certainly with the enclosed aspect of this particular version, one where you would likely spend most of your daylight hours – whether underway or when moored. A skipper and friend could be seated on the two Navigator helm chairs behind what was a most comprehensive and as well visually ‘impressive’ helm station.

Presented on a rounded vinyl-trimmed carbon fibre display that was both functional as well as ergonomic, features on this helm included Seastar steering, the Raymarine E120 electronics screen with radar, autopilot and VHF, and each side of the E120, the Steyr engine instrumentation.

Seating forward of this helm feature would cater for a veritable army of guests seated around the full-width U-shaped lounge and five-person table. ‘Clears’ on the rear corners and across the back of the flybridge ensured it could be transformed into a warm and dry room and if you felt like a wee tipple along the way, the bar module to port and adjacent to the top of the stairs included a Corian-topped servery, bottle rack and refrigerator. Indeed a very ambient part of the V1250 Conquest.

A New World

Step inside the Voyager saloon and there was a definite air of refinement about the presentation, in particular the wood finish. Bold was perhaps the best way to describe this room for every feature seemed to make a statement. To starboard was an elevated six-person dining setting. Arguably you wouldn’t normally get away with an elevation such as this but in a saloon with the generously high ceiling this example boasted, it was actually quite clever. Serving a two-fold purpose, it not only enhanced all-round vision but also provided greater headroom for the accommodation below.

Opposite this dining setting was the aft galley. Arguments abound as to the merits of where a galley should be situated, but I prefer an aft galley exactly like this option – one of the best I have seen in a vessel of this size. Finished as in the instance of the dining setting, in rich semi-gloss Californian beech, it was patently obvious the designers had listened to their clients for the galley was user-friendliness personified. Features here included 230 litres of separate refrigerator and freezer, a two-burner gas hob and oven as well as a microwave oven, generous bench space and importantly, equally generous cupboard, drawer and general storage provision.

voyager power catamarans

Completing the picture of elegance in the saloon was the chart table with (BEP) circuit-breaker switch-panel cabinet forward of the dining setting, and of course the impressive liquor cabinet which was ‘incorporated’ into the centre of the front bulkhead.

Luxury Accommodation – Catamaran-style

As in most catamaran designs there are a number of different options available. In this instance, the emphasis was very much on an appropriate level of comfort within the master stateroom. As such, this was a three-cabin configuration, with one bathroom.

The guest accommodation was in the starboard hull, with the ‘double’ room aft of the stairway. While not a huge room, the bed was a generous double – and there was still room to close the door when changing. Features in here included a feature wall mirror, good lighting, a wardrobe and side-storage facility, an opening side port-hole and a ventilation fan. The décor in here very much continued the up-market high level of presentation of the aforementioned areas of the V1250.

voyager power catamarans

The forward accommodation on that (starboard) side consisted of a twin single athwartships and fore and aft bunk configuration. With ample light and ventilation courtesy of an overhead hatch as well as a side port-hole, this cabin in fact was brilliant in design, very roomy, generously sized berths, good wardrobe and storage facilities, neat step access up onto each berth – and extremely well presented.

Across on the port side was the master accommodation. While essentially a ‘luxury’ characterisation would surely embody a private ensuite (an optional ensuite layout is available), I was more than happy with the option of a more expansive albeit communal bathroom, just across the walkway from the master bedroom, aft of the stairway. Especially appreciated was the space around the head – not cramped – and the separate shower cubicle – which you could swing a cat in!

voyager power catamarans

Again the ‘luxury’ descriptive for the master stateroom must be viewed within the context of a catamaran configuration, and yet again I have to say the designer did a damned good job. The queen-size island berth lay semi-diagonal across the room in what was a most majestic setting. With good headroom even when sitting up in bed, there was also plenty of lighting and ventilation and again, plenty of storage – even down to a huge (lined) walk-in wardrobe. The high-quality linings and carpet and the generous ‘splashings’ of wood all enhanced the visual pleasure. There was even a painting above the head of the bed – to complete the picture of contemporary opulence!

Mechanicals

As is the case with most Voyager catamarans, the recommended mode of power was Steyr diesels. “They are technically advanced engines which provide exceptional performance and miserly fuel consumption. I place special emphasis on the key elements of weight, performance and economy,” Appleton explained.

One would tend to suggest the hulls were seemingly quite efficient in their shape also, but certainly to glean a top speed of 22 knots from twin 3.2-litre 6-cylinder 190hp Steyr diesel engines, somewhat graphically supported his claims. More to the point, cruising at a relatively brisk 17 knots it used just 45 litres of diesel per hour.

Interestingly, with a fuel capacity of 1400 litres, that equates to a range of roughly 500 nautical miles.

In keeping with the ‘economical cruising’ philosophy, onboard power is 12V with the usual high-consumption items, such microwaves, powered through a Zantax inverter. The three 200Ah Absorbed Power AGM ‘house’ batteries and two engine ‘start’ batteries were all charged courtesy of the heavy-duty 90A alternators on the Steyr engines or when in port, courtesy of the shore power through the onboard charger.

voyager power catamarans

That system is quite sufficient within the context of the specification of this particular Voyager, but certainly if you were to take up the air-conditioning option or include such features as electric cooking, then sensibly you would be adding a genset to the portfolio.

Other onboard systems included heavy duty Seastar hydraulic steering, ZF Micro Commander electronic controls, TMC electric macerator heads and Clarion entertainment systems. The drive was conventional shafts, through ZF 45A 2.43:1 gearboxes to 4-blade 19” diameter x 21” pitch ZF Faster propellers.

As stated, the Conquest was what I would describe as a solid performer, a good honest hull that had few vices. Weighing in at just 9,000kg (not including the 1400 litres of diesel and 750 litres of water) the solid fibreglass hulls with composite core and foam topsides, deck and flybridge was a strong and tight ship and really revelled in the less than ideal conditions of our test day, which included rather gargantuan swells and waves off the Gold Coast Seaway entrance.

This hull had the obligatory handling skills required of a bona fide bluewater cruising hull. It accelerated surprisingly well considering the relatively meagre horsepower, it rode with a nice level attitude and it cruised efficiently.

As far as perception went, I felt most comfortable with a ‘luxury’ tag being applied to this vessel for it was spec’d and presented to a level beyond that of most catamarans available on the market today. Yet, it didn’t carry the price tag I expected.

If you subscribe to the theory that a 40-foot catamaran is the equivalent size of at least a 50-foot monohull, then the price tag of under $A1-million inclusive of the optional extra ‘luxury package’ which included amongst other things the enclosed flybridge, radar, aft awning, underwater lights, drinks cabinet – is most competitive.

Space Perspective Will Welcome Support Vessel MS Voyager to Port Canaveral Sept. 19

Space Perspective's MS Voyager to be Welcomed Back to Cape Canaveral for Celebration

WATCH: Meet the world’s first Marine Spaceport for human spaceflight that carried the world’s largest human-rated capsule recovery A-frame. The first luxury space capsule to launch to over 100,000 feet, Space Perspective will host a Voyager and Neptune Welcome Party replete with firehoses shooting water, alongside the MS Voyager with the capsule on board. For the public, a good area to watch Voyager come in is around Fishlips restaurant at Port Canavaeral.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – On the heels of the first inaugural flight of the fully operational Spaceship Neptune Excelsior, Space Perspective will welcome their support vessel MS Voyager, back to the Space Coast on Thursday, September 19 at 2 p.m. at the North Cargo Berth 8, Port Canaveral.

Spaceship Neptune ascended to an altitude of 101,000 feet, successfully demonstrating our ability to design and manufacture a luxurious spacecraft with the largest windows ever sent to space.

“The flight validated our thermal control systems, mission control, retrieval procedures, and more,” said Downey.

“And we are excited to say that if passengers had been aboard, they would have experienced a safe and comfortable journey to the edge of space. This is a pivotal moment for Space Perspective – as well as the surrounding space community – and we want to share the excitement with you. Do let us know if you or anyone from your team is able to join us.”

Space Perspective’s investment on the Space Coast is planned to total more than $38 million and spur the creation of approximately 240 full-time permanent jobs by the end of 2026, with an annual average wage of $80,000.

“Congratulations to Space Perspective for this exciting announcement and milestone, which continues the strong diversification of our region’s growing space tourism industry,” said Lynda L. Weatherman, President and CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast.

“This global expansion of space tourism opportunities is not only exciting but will further strengthen Space Perspective’s presence and growth here on the Space Coast.”

MS Voyager allows Space Perspective to launch and receive its spacecraft from marine-based sites anywhere around the world. The ship was acquired from Edison Chouest Offshore shipbuilders and will homeport out of Port Canaveral until it is fully outfitted for future launches.`

When it announced the Spaceship Neptune Space Balloon, Space Perspective planned on launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Brevard County. Now, Space Perspective has plans to launch from the open sea anywhere in the world.

In addition to providing space experiences across the globe, the ocean-going ship will also be able to move as needed to create ideal launch conditions.

WATCH: Meet the world’s first Marine Spaceport for human spaceflight that will carry the world’s largest human-rated capsule recovery A-frame. The 272-foot vessel is powered by more than 8,000 horsepower and holds onboard generators that produce over 1 megawatt of electricity. Voyager’s incredibly precise mobility and dynamic positioning are made possible by two bow thrusters (one of which rotates a full 360 degrees) and two stern thrusters that rotate 360 degrees.

A Space Perspective spokesperson said upon splashdown of the Spaceship Neptune Space Balloon, a fleet of support boats will deploy to stabilize and retrieve the Neptune, which will be loaded back onto the Voyager via a custom-built A-Frame mechanism.

“Space Perspective will change your relationship with our planet by providing the quintessential astronaut experience of viewing Earth from the blackness of space,” said Jane Poynter, Space Perspective’s Founder and Co-CEO.

“It’s imperative for us to think about our business with a global mindset. Removing geographic borders for launch and landing accelerates our mission of making this transformative experience more accessible to the world and international marketplace – safely, reliably and with minimal impact on our planet.”

FLORIDA SPACE COAST HQ

The company is currently offering bookings to the edge of space out of its headquarters on Florida’s Space Coast.

Launching the Spaceship Neptune Space Balloon via MS Voyager gives Space Perspective flexibility that it says is needed to grow into a future market that Canaccord Genuity says could be worth $8 billion by 2030.

“We always imagined offering the opportunity to view the most incredible natural phenomena from space, including the Northern Lights, the boot of Italy, the sheer scale of the Nile Delta, and the deep blue seas around the Bahamas. Marine Spaceports like MS Voyager make this a reality,” said Poynter.

Space Perspective officials said the company has already sold more than 1,000 tickets at $125,000 each.

Now with the capacity to launch from marine-based sites around the world, in addition to launching from land on Florida’s Space Coast, Space Perspective has become the first global space travel experience company, offering safe and sustainable journeys to the edge of space from where Explorers live and play.

The name Voyager is an homage to the Voyager 1 Space Probe mission, which, on astronomer Carl Sagan’s request, took a photo of Earth from across the solar system on February 14, 1990.

That photo, now known iconically as the Pale Blue Dot, inspired Sagan’s book of the same name and his call for humans to “preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known” – words that reverberate through Space Perspective’s mission today.

Plans are underway to integrate the marine-based launches into marquee global events, and conversations are active with several potential destinations across the globe to offer Explorers an awe-inspiring view of some of the world’s most iconic geography.

Marine Spaceports create ideal launch conditions in two ways: by navigating to areas of good weather, which allows for year-round operations within a region, and by moving with the sea breeze, so there is virtually no wind across the deck.

This enables more frequent launch opportunities, as well as more options for the time of day, including sunrise and sunset nighttime stargazing flights for Explorers.

“This is another important milestone and a proud moment for the Space Perspective crew both in terms of pioneering engineering and the ability to scale our offer quickly, globally. We are grateful to our extended crew of dynamic, best-in-class operational partners,” said Space Perspective’s Founder, Co-CEO and CTO Taber MacCallum.

In keeping with Space Perspective’s environmentally conscious ethos, offsets will be provided by Cool Effects, and the vessel itself is being retrofitted to use biofuel to reduce its carbon footprint.

SMOOTH, GENTLE WATER LANDING

When it’s time to come back to Earth at the end of the journey in Spaceship Neptune’s pressurized capsule, a patent-pending splash-cone at its base provides a smooth and gentle water landing.

Fast boats from Fluid Watercraft will then arrive to stabilize the capsule, which will be lifted onto the Marine Spaceport by a custom-built A-frame provided by Supreme Integrated Technologies.

Communications throughout the operation – between land, sea, and capsule – will be provided by Silvus Technologies.

From early Apollo to SpaceX missions, water landings have been a safe and trusted way to return to Earth, and Space Perspective’s team includes former SpaceX and NASA launch and retrieval experts.

“We’ve always believed in Space Perspective’s mission and the experience they are bringing to the world through human spaceflight. Unlocking the ability to scale globally with the addition of Marine Spaceports only strengthens the proposition and the power of the company to change people’s lives and the future of our planet,” said Brandon Ross, General Partner of LightShed Ventures, a major Space Perspective investor.
