The crew from Spain came through in the end, as racers spent the day searching for pivotal gusts in highly variable wind conditions in the finale of the Oracle Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix on Sunday, July 23.

The sailing event, the four-year-old SailGP tour’s debut in Southern California, was staged before jammed grandstands in front of a wildly praised course at the end of the Port of Los Angeles’ Berth 46.

Spain, Denmark and Australia prevailed in three races Saturday and two more on Sunday, landing them in the finals late Sunday. When the Spaniards prevailed, the sold-out crowd gave skipper Diego Botin, who took over the reins of SailGP’s youngest team in 2023, an enthusiastic standing ovation.

Ten high-tech catamarans soared across the water as SailGP arrived in Los Angeles County on Saturday . Fans packing the grandstands at L.A.’s Outer Harbor were eager for a second day of hydrofoil-fueled action on Sunday.

“The famous ‘hurricane gulch’ winds in our Outer Harbor are ideal for these $5 million, high-tech” boats,” Arley Baker, the Port of Los Angeles ‘ senior director of communications and stakeholder engagement, declared on Saturday. One sailor declared the POLA racecourse, surrounded by the shoreline and the breakwater, “an incredible venue.”

L.A. is the only stop where the fan area is directly adjacent to the racing base, providing a richer viewing experience, organizers said.

Despite inconsistent conditions, the racers put on a speedy show. And they were ready to set new course records on Sunday, aiming for a good-wind, flat-water opportunity off San Pedro.

Mother Nature had other ideas. The organizers, fans and racers all showed up hungry for a repeat. The wind, however, was frustratingly fickle.

Light to moderate winds prevailed most of the day; sometimes, the wind fell off in the usually gusty outer harbor. But the team from Spain’s late burst of speed was enough for victory as the event drew to a close.

While these incredible boats can sail in about any amount of wind, Sunday’s conditions could not muster up enough of it for sustained flying.

Seagoing strategists tirelessly searched for stronger gusts to have any hope of attaining any speed at all.

This was an experienced group, one ready for such a windfinder’s day. Though this was SailGP’s first foray into Southern California waters, many of the skippers were familiar with the area, having sailed in the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s small boat competitions. Four of the teams’ captains were veterans of the Congressional Cup, the annual Long Beach regatta.

In the end, the boats were able to foil in each of the races but no records were broken. Amid the light winds Sunday morning, large sails were installed on each of the matched boats, making controlling the watercraft more of a challenge.

When these boats are “foiling” they fly above the waves at close to freeway speeds, supported only on hydrofoils. The higher the foils are, the faster the boat goes. But as the foils go higher, control is progressively lost, racers say.

F1 motorsports driver Sebastian Vettel, a co-owner of the German team, noted the difficulty in maneuvering. After a practice run this week — his first experience sailing aboard these speed machines — he declared: “No brakes.”

This weekend’s event was part of a SailGP season during which international teams travel to iconic cities including Sydney, Auckland and Bermuda. L.A. was the second site of a 12-stop season that runs until June of 2024.

The next event is in St. Tropez in September.

Fans came from Orange County, Long Beach and the South Bay, excited to have the race in local waters. One group of Long Beach grandstand ticket holders, ranging in age from 19 to 80, chartered a bus and stopped for lunch at San Pedro Brewing Company before racing.

Some fans helped out with the event, too.

Recent UCLA grad Max Berg — a Long Beach lifeguard and Catalina 37 Wet Wednesday sailor — worked for Team New Zealand. He was looped in by Bell businessman and past New Zealand rugby star Dougie Pye.

Mike Segerblom, Executive Director at United States Sailing Center, connected SailGP with local youth programs to participate in SailGP’s Inspire program and provided some kelp analysis help at the racing venue.

Inspire is SailGP’s community, education and outreach initiative. It hosted foiling clinics both on and off the water on Wednesday and Thursday prior to the weekend races.

Tours of the tech base were held for local youth groups. One youth sailor who participated was 9-year-old Daisy Sumpter from Long Beach, who just last week took top honors in the Jessica Uniack Memorial Beach-to-Bay Race.

“On the morning tour of the base I was most fascinated by the way everything can be packed up and shipped to the next sailing venue in containers,” said Daisy. “I’m a water child. I’ve watched SailGP and I think about how it would feel to foil. It wouldbe scary but it would be fun.”

Melanie Roberts – one of Segerblom’s former students from the USC sailing program — connected him with SailGP officials. During racing, he was a “shock absorber,” helping out wherever needed to keep the course clear of non-racing boats.

Chuck Clay, staff commodore of Alamitos Bay YC, was one of the sailors who Segerblom recruited to help with the course marshal task.

Camille Daniels, 2000 chairman of Long Beach Yacht Club’s Congressional Cup, showed up to support Jimmy Spithill, who competed that year in the “grandfather of match racing.”

Spithill helmed the United States entry on Sunday, cheered on by Daniels.

Both agreed they’d like to see SailGP return to Southern California in 2025.

They are not alone. Race organizers declared the event a winner, thanking the Port of L.A. for its support.

LAYC 2024 Opening Day Race

sailboat race san pedro

SAN PEDRO— Racing is slowly making its way back onto the waters of Southern California as the Los Angeles Yacht Club (LAYC) has announced its opening race day, on Jan 27.

This series will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and the US Safety Equipment Requirements (USSER) and US Nearshore Race level, except as modified by notices of race and sailing instructions.

This race is open to yachts possessing a current Southern California PHRF handicap and the Area C Random Leg rating will apply. Cruising or Wooden Hull class yachts with a SoCal PHRF certificate will use their applicable PHRF rating, Area C and Random Leg. A minimum of four entries will be required to establish a class. Entry fees are $75 and a current PHRF certificate must accompany all entries. Entries must be received by 6 p.m. Jan. 25th. Late entries will only be accepted with the approval of the Race Committee Chairman. Late entries will not be considered without a current PHRF certificate, completed necessary entry forms and entry fees. Entries must be made by completing an LAYC Race Entry form through the Regatta Network.

Trophies will be presented as soon as possible after the completion of racing. Take-home trophies for the event will be awarded in each class on the following basis:

  • Up to four entries; one trophy
  • Five to seven entries; two trophies
  • Eight or more entries; three trophies for corrected time finishes

Perpetual trophies to be awarded are as follows:

The Keating Coffey Flagship Trophy will be awarded to the highest finishing present Commodore or representative Flag Officer who helms the entered boat for at least 75% of the measured distance of the race, including the start, each mark rounding and the finish. Only those entries indicating “Present Commodore / Flag Officer Driver” on their entry form or indicating such status to the Race Committee before 11:50 a.m. on the day of the race will be eligible for the Keating Coffey trophy. Boats competing for this trophy will sail the course with the code flag “one” and their yacht club burgee visible on the backstay.

The Craig Trophy will be awarded to the highest LAYC finisher who did not also win the Keating Coffey trophy.

The Vanderbilt Trophy will be awarded to the highest non-LAYC finisher who did not also win the Keating Coffey trophy.

As one of the oldest yacht clubs in California, the LAYC was founded in 1901 as   South Coast Yacht Club. In 1920, it changed its name to Los Angeles Yacht Club. The Los Angeles Motor Boat Club and LAYC consolidated their membership in 1922 and moved into a facility shared with the California Yacht Club. In 1937, LAYC moved from the California Yacht Club facility into a “temporary” New England-style clubhouse in Fish Harbor, San Pedro, where it remained for the next 56 years. Finally, LAYC moved in 1993 to its present location at Cabrillo Marina in San Pedro.

Looks useful and interesting. Good luck! We just had a weather seminar and spoke via Zoom with Cole Bauer, who was off Rio in 2nd place in the Global Solo Challenge race, being routed by our speaker. These sorts of sessions are very helpful.

Looks interesting and is a rare opportunity for this type of information. Another great bit of racing information can be found in Don Guillette's Sail Trim Guide , available right here on this site. There is a chapter on racing that most folks don't know is right there.

  • Team synergy is key to winning. We’ll lay out five ways to achieve it.
  • We’ll discuss how to tack more efficiently, set faster, jibe safer, and how to properly round the bottom mark.
  • We’ll detail driving and trim techniques for achieving max VMG as well as for Power, Speed, and Point modes.
  • We’ll present some great tips for getting good starts every time.
  • And finally, we’ll cover a few commonly encountered tactical situations.

So... How'd it go?

Divers find 5 bodies during search of superyacht wreckage after it sank off Sicily, 1 still missing

AP logo

ROME -- Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday and searched for one more as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Rescue crews unloaded three body bags from rescue vessels that pulled into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said two other bodies had also been found in the wreckage for a total of five.

The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and that no signs of life had emerged over three days of searching, maritime experts said.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered Monday - that of the ship's chef, Recaldo Thomas, of Antigua.

Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but would visit his parents' homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua as the nationality of someone on board.

The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.

Lynch's spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Meanwhile, investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy even though no formal suspects have been publicly identified.

Questions abound about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to sink so quickly, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors.

Was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat such as the Bayesian might have been retractable, to allow it to enter shallower ports?

"There's a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up," said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. "But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side," he said in an interview.

The captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat, which came to the Bayesian's rescue, said his craft had sustained minimal damage - the frame of a sun awning broke - even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest, hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship's position as the storm, which was forecast, rolled in.

"Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea," Karsten Bornersaid in a text message. But he said that might not have been a viable option for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

"If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea," he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

"So for the vessel to sink, especially this fast, you are really looking at taking water on board very quickly, but also in a number of locations along the length of the vessel, which again indicates that it might have been rolled over on its side," Souppez said.

Italian coast guard and fire rescue divers continued the underwater search in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck's depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in tag teams could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching.

The limited dive time is designed in part to avoid decompression sickness, also known as the "bends," which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.

"The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be," said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggests the operation's managers are trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.

"It sounds like they're operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they're being extremely conservative," he said.

Additionally, the divers were working in extremely tight spaces, with debris floating around them, limited visibility and oxygen tanks on their backs.

"We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down," said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. "An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren't normal conditions. We're at the limit of possibility."

"It's not a question of entering the cabin to inspect it," he added. "They've arrived at the level of the cabins, but it's not like you can open the door," he said.

The Italian coast guard said they had reinforced their dive teams and were using underwater remote-controlled robots, which can stay out for six or seven hours at a time and record the surroundings.

The lack of any signs of life and the recovery of bodies led outside experts to conclude that the search was now a recovery effort and investigation to determine how the tragedy had unfolded.

"I think the fact that there's been quite a lot of diving presence around the vessel and that they haven't been able to pick up any signs of life inside the vessel, is, is unfortunately, not a particularly good sign," said Souppez.

Winfield reported from Rome and Kirka from London. Associated Press visual journalists Trisha Thomas in Rome and Silvia Stellacci in Porticello and reporter Anika Kentish in St. John's, Antigua contributed.
