The history of Swan Maxis begins early on, a few years after the establishment of Nautor. An expert client asked for a 17 m Sparkman & Stephens. It was the year 1970 and the magnificent Swan 55 took shape. At that time, it was one of the largest yachts in the world to be produced in series and in fibreglass. A clean foredeck leads aft to the coach roof of the raised saloon, which blends seamlessly into an expansive, protected cockpit area. This core element of the experience afloat is completely free of lines, enabling those not engaged in the sailing of this sublime superyacht to truly relax while underway. The detailed design conceals a sophisticated, electrically controlled bimini top and sprayhood, which disappear into a completely flush coach roof cassette when not in use, and offers extensive shelter from sea and sun.

At anchor, the cockpit area transforms into an encompassing lounge space. With versatile deck sofas, it is the perfect place to unwind as the sun sets before converting into an elegant, intimate dining area. Following the philosophy of other designs in the Maxi Swanline, the Swan 120 also offers ‘aisle seats’ to enhance both the sailing and leisure experience.

Aft of the deck lounge is a clean deck space, still sheltered by the coamings, which runs to behind the steering pedestals with ‘aero-seating’. In-between the helming stations, it is possible to incorporate a ‘snug-island’, which provides protected access to the aft accommodation with a dodger, sprayhood and cozy seating for those on watch.

The voluminous stern section will gain real attention when the yacht is at rest. The transom folds down hydraulically to form a teak-decked swim platform and reveala a spacious garage, housing a tender of 4.5 metres and other toys of choice. Once the tender is launched, the large area becomes available for watersports, sunbathing and even dining. The design means the clean Swan stern under sail effortlessly transforms into a large ‘beach-deck’, connected to a well-organised ‘hangar’ for maximum entertainment at anchor. In addition to the stern platform swinging down, a section of the aft-deck may be opened up to convert into a large sunbed at deck level.

The hull and deck of the Swan 120 will be a full carbon fibre construction, using epoxy SPRINT® pre-preg carbon fibre interior and exterior skins on a core of M-grade Corecell foam. The pre-preg system provides the best in structural stiffness and rigidity at the lightest possible weight, while at the same time ensuring absolute structural integrity. The hull will be laid up in a female mould tooled from the same technology, thereby ensuring identical mechanical properties when the hull undergoes heat curing using the very latest in oven technology.

First look: Swan 120 – designed for outside living

At the recent Monaco Yacht Show, we took a look at several of the featured new yachts on display, including the new Swan 120

Being moored stern-to in Monaco’s Port Hercule during the recent Monaco Yacht Show 2021 was the perfect place to showcase a trump feature of the Swan 120. Its ‘beach deck’ with a twin set of steps that gently lead down from the aft deck will rival some of the aft ends of the surrounding motoryachts.

The new Swan 98 and and Swan 120 are the latest in Swan’s new generation German Frers-designed range of performance cruisers. These powerful, beamy designs sport twin rudders and plenty of form stability in a style which has already proven popular over the last three years with the 65 and 78.

These latest superyacht versions are of carbon-epoxy construction. Geared around ocean passagemaking at speed they come with the option for a telescopic keel, which buys improved windward performance paired with shoal draught capability.

By carrying almost max beam right aft on the Swan 120, designer Frers has created the multiple benefits of form stability, huge volumes below and the space to create this aft hangar-slash-beach terrace area.

Deck lounging space has clearly been a key criteria of the design. The vast guest cockpit is adorned with multiple sofas and can be protected by a bimini and sprayhood which rise out of a coachroof cassette at the push of a button.

A 1.8m-wide companionway of curved glass then eases you into the deck saloon where there are vast daybeds adjacent to the large hull portlights.

Nautor's Swan Yachts for Sale

The Nautor’s Swan shipyard is located in the small Finnish town of Pietarsaari, just a short distance from the Arctic Circle. On this icey stretch of coast, Nautor’s Swan have been building boats since 1966 and the Swan range is known throughout the world. In a build environment where temperatures can fall to minus 30 degrees celsius, and the sea can be frozen for up to five months of the year, advanced engineering excellence is a core part of the yard’s DNA.

Nautor’s Swan handles everything from the design to the finest details in a fully integrated in-house building process. The smaller Nautor’s Swan hulls, for cruising yachts, are hand laid-up and vacuum-infused, while the larger models are constructed in foam-core carbon, which has huge weight-saving benefits.

Swan yacht buyers can also enjoy membership of ‘Club Swan’ – a non-profit organization for past, present and future Swan sailing yacht owners. The Club organizes various regattas, including the ‘Rolex Swan Cup’, the ‘Swan European Regatta’ and the ‘Swan American Regatta’ and these are run in association with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Royal Yacht Squadron of Cowes and the New York Yacht Club, respectively.

Today, with more than 50 years’ of heritage, Nautor’s Swan is globally recognized as an undisputed leader in the international sailing market.

History of Nautor’s Swan Yachts

The Nautor’s Swan Shipyard was founded in 1966 by Pekka Koskenkyla, a man with an inspiring vision to produce high-quality, high-performance sailing yachts for those passionate about cruising, racing and seeking contact with the ocean and nature. Pekka, educated in the USA, had the foresight to engage Sparkman & Stephens of New York, one of the most acclaimed yacht designers at the time, to design the first sailing yacht. The vessel was built in fiberglass and trimmed with wood – materials which would dominate the production of vessels in the years to come.

The first sailing yacht model from the Nautor’s Swan shipyard was the Swan 36, and this led to the Swan 37 and Swan 43, with the latter winning the Admiral’s Cup in 1969.

That same year, fate’s fickle hand dealt the Nautor’s Swan yard a catastrophic blow. The Assembly Hall caught fire and burnt to the ground, destroying with it a dozen hulls in various stages of production. Pekka was forced to sell stakes in the company to finance the yard’s rebuild and see production resumed.

When the yard was re-established, the larger and more elegant Swan 55 and Swan 65 yachts were born. Partnering cruising capability with racing prowess for the typical owner and recreational yachtsman, the designs were immensely popular. Testament to their racing ability, it was a Swan 65 (named SAYULA II) that won the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973/74.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Nautor’s Swan engaged naval architect Ron Holland as their designer of choice. Holland designed five boats for the yard, of which approximately 300 units were produced.

The mid to late 80s saw Swan enter another new era of design, this time with the appointment of German Frers. Along with a string of great successes in models under 80 foot (24m), Frers was also responsible for Swan’s first Maxi models; the Swan 80, Swan 90, Swan 100, Swan 105, Swan 110 and Swan 115 – with the 115 seeing the yard cross over into superyacht territory.

Frers’ contribution to Nautor’s Swan also permitted them entrance to the ‘one design’ racing sector, with the design of the Swan 45 in 2001. This was followed by the ‘Club Swan 42’ in 2005 which was developed in association with the New York Yacht Club.

In 2002, a new yard, close to the sea, was opened in Jakobstad. The new yard is dedicated to the assembly of the Maxi Swans, building the Swan 60 through to the Swan 115.

In 2017, Nautor’s Swan opened their Boatbuilding Technology Center. Here, there are facilities dedicated to joinery and high-tech lamination, a post-cure oven, painting halls, and areas for warehousing and logistics. The close proximity of the engineering and manufacturing departments results in an efficiency that is rarely seen.

Nautor’s Swan has been controlled and managed by Leonardo Ferragamo and his group of investors since 1998.

Known today as ‘Swans’, the modern yachts built by Nautor’s Swan owe their success and acclaim to the original Swan 36. This first design, which featured a number of significant innovations, offered a level or performance and safety that equalled that of traditional wooden vessels yet the lighter fiberglass hull provided greater steering ability and enhanced living space. The Swan 36 marked the beginning of what would become one of the most prestigious boat yards in the world.

The Swans of the ‘70s and ‘80s were designed by the award-winning naval architect Ron Holland. German Frers took over as Swan’s naval architect of choice from the mid to late 80s, and he designed many highly successful models under 80 foot (24m) for the shipyard.

Swan’s first Maxi yacht models were also designed by Frers: the Swan 80, Swan 90, Swan 100, Swan 105, Swan 110 and Swan 115. The 115 brought Nautor’s Swan into the superyacht sector and the skills of Frers’ have again been employed for the design of Swan’s latest sailing yacht, the Swan 120.

The Swan 120 carries all the hallmarks of a Nautor Swan: grace, power and comfort. The elegance is timeless, with the sleek exterior styling and naval architecture by world-acclaimed Germán Frers, who has collaborated with Nautor Swan for more than four decades.

As with all Swan Maxis, the Swan 120 has regatta performance credentials. Constructed in carbon fibre using innovative construction techniques, the Swan 120 is lightweight and stiff. There are three sail plan configurations offered, meeting the wide range of needs and different approaches to sailing. Access to remote, unspoiled anchorages is also possible thanks to its telescopic keel.

A key feature of the Swan 12o is the fold-out transform that doubles as a teak-decked swim platform and garage for a 4.5-metre tender and other water toys. Once launched, the swim platform is large enough for sunbathing or dining at the water’s edge.

The multi-level is sublime and incredibly generous in space. Immediately greeting guests is a large saloon with a lavish lounge and dining area, with large windows port and starboard, providing stunning vistas. The Swan 120 brings together the skill and craftsmanship of three distinct groups, all renowned in their individual fields, and working together, in partnership, to create a masterful interpretation of the modern superyacht. Delivering unparalleled comfort, safe passage-making and the requisite level of reliability, the Swan 120 resets the bar for this size of yacht.

The naval architecture for the inspirational project emanates from the Buenos Aires office of maestro, Germán Frers, house designer for Nautor’s Swan since the early 1980s. A fresh, influential element in the longstanding collaboration between Argentinean flair and Finnish build-prowess, is the interior design contribution of Genovese architect, Misa Poggi. Featuring the latest construction techniques and materials, along with an innovative range of solutions, the Swan 120 is aimed at defining the next generation of performance superyacht design.

Shaping the present, influencing the future

The shape of the Swan 120 reflects the elegance and style Frers brings to all his yachts, particularly Swan yachts where the lines are instantly recognizable and make a statement in every harbour and on every ocean. From the stunning stem, with the typical Germán Frers sheerline, the hull lines sweep gently aft. From around the mid-point, the smooth rocker in the hull rises to a masculine stern with powerful, dynamic quarters above the waterline. In addition to the Owner’s stateroom, there are three ensuite guest cabins envisaged, one double and two twins, along with three twin crew cabins, also ensuite. In both layouts, for privacy, the galley and laundry are positioned close to the crew quarters and provide everything needed for seamless service of the Owner and guests. The Swan 120 comes with a comprehensive specification as standard, but there is an extensive list of options to ensure each yacht reflects her Owner’s unique interests and style. Three sail-plan configurations echo the diversity of approach to the sport of sailing and that different Owners will favour different sailing grounds. Capable of world girdling exploits to concentrating exploration of the Mediterranean, Caribbean or Pacific, the emphasis will always respond to the needs.

In addition to the sail-plan considerations, Nautor’s Swan has given thought to the underwater appendages. Chief among these is the option of a telescopic keel, which reduces draught from 5.5 to 3.5 metres. In conjunction with the standard twin rudders, this keel option opens up a world of shoal-draft lagoons, colourful harbours and remote, unspoiled anchorages without compromising sailing performance. As expected, the system design is optimized for safety and reliability without any intrusion into the interior. The anchor for a vessel of this size is critical piece of equipment and the design-thinking has had made sure that the Swan 120 has an appropriate system. The anchor is launched and retrieved by means of a hydraulic retracting and folding arm, utilizing a design that has proven its reliability and ease of use over many years.

The Swan 120 has been designed to enable worldwide cruising without compromise. Advanced sail handling systems are complemented by abundant deck stowage including a spacious forward sail locker and two aft lazarettes. She also has generous tankage for both water and fuel, all easily inspected. Below the raised saloon is a full-beam engine room providing excellent access to her 450hp main engine, the two generators and other electrical and hydraulic systems. For those wishing to compete, there is a comprehensive racing package that includes a square-top mainsail with running backstays; a double-length bowsprit with bobstay for fast reaching with powerful masthead gennakers and even the option to integrate a concealed anchor system.
