Where should I go on an Italy yacht charter?

Ligurian Riviera Yacht Charters

Also known as the Italian Riviera, Liguria Riviera yacht rentals are characterised by centuries-old architecture, historic landmarks, and craggy cliffs.  Highlights of the Italian Riviera include  Cinque Terre , a string of former fishing towns carved into the hills overlooking the sea. Nearby  Portofino  shares the same type of brightly-coloured buildings and is a magnet for superyacht charters.

Amalfi Coast Yacht Charters

Amalfi Coast yacht rentals are one of the most beloved cruising grounds in Italy. Also known as the Sorrentine Peninsula, the coast stretches from Naples to Salerno, covering towns such as Sorrento , Positano, Ravello and Amalfi. Islands including Capri and the Phlegrean archipelago (which covers Ischia, Procida and Vivara) are included in the Amalfi Coast. The region has limited beaches, but plenty to see and do onshore- you won't ever be bored on the Amalfi Coast!

The island of nearby Capri is steeped in culture, history and natural beauty. Explore the ancient villas, and discover the wonders of the legendary Blue Grotto.

Sardinia Yacht Charters

Located in the Tyrrhenian sea next to the French island of Corsica , Sardinia is hugely different to the Italian mainland. In contrast to the steep bluffs and deep sapphire sea of the Amalfi Coast and Italian Riviera, Sardinia is bordered by sugary sand beaches and crystal-clear bays.

The north-east coast of the island is the most popular for visiting yachts. For keen sailors, a voyage around La Maddalena archipelago can't be beaten- it's the same location where a number of prestigious regattas are held and it sits on the famous  Costa Smeralda , which   is well-known for its beaches and fantastic snorkeling opportunities.   Porto Cervo is a luxury-lovers dream, with its high-end shops and designer emporiums close to the main port. Meanwhile, Olbia is the quieter sister of Porto Cervo, where you can while away the day wandering around museums and admiring the architecture.

Venice Yacht Charters

the famous canals of Venice where luxury charter yachts are not allowed to cruise but provides a romantic setting while guests are enjoying their vacation

A cultural gem of Italy, Venice is a city that is primed for of art and theatre fans. There are countless museums and art galleries for you to explore during your visit, and while you can't cruise your yacht through the city's inner waterways, you can indulge in a gondola ride- and that's far more intimate and romantic!

Nearby, the island of Murano is famed for its production of unique hand-blown glass art, and makes the perfect stop for a day wandering the boutiques and galleries.

Yacht charters in Venice can also incorporate the beautiful neighboring destinations of Croatia into their itinerary. Speak with your yacht charter broker for more information.

Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera

An Italy yacht rental vacation offers an abundance of things to see and do. Here is our small selection of some of the most impressive:

Don't Miss:

  • Chryst of the Abyss , an 8-ft bronze statue that stands 17m below the surface of the sea in Portofino, creating a popular diving spot.
  • Fontelina , an iconic beach club set on the rocks in Capri.
  • Villa Rufolo , a villa with beautiful, manicured gardens overlooking the sea in Ravello.
  • Il San Pietro di Positano , a pretty hotel with an elegant terrace looking out over the ocean in the cliffs of Positano.
  • The Faraglioni , a rock formation off the coast of Capri.
  • Cala Goloritze , in Sardinia, a white-sand beach which is consistently voted one of the prettiest in Europe.
  • Hotel Splendido , timeless hotel and SuperyachtSet hotspot in the hills looking out over the bay of Portofino.
  • The Sunken City of Baiae , a small city that sunk into the sea during Roman times close to Naples.
  • The Blue Grotto , or Grotto Azzura, a semi-submerged cave in Capri where the light refracts the sunlight from outside, creating a mesmerizing optical illusion.

From family-friendly fun to dazzling party hotspots, Italy provides it all. You can enjoy laid-back cruises or jam-packed island-hopping and finish your yacht charter with enough memories to last a lifetime.

With a rich history stretching back thousands of years, Italy has long been a pilgrimage destination for culture vultures across the globe, who come in their droves to absorb its beautiful architecture, fine art and iconic culture. From the colosseum in Rome and world-famous artists to its iconic fashion houses, the allure of Italy's rich history and culture is clear.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to superyachts for charter in Italy, with one of the largest and most diverse fleets in the world for you to choose from.

Motor Yacht Charters in Italy

You can choose between a small, fast and sporty motor yacht , or a larger one with all the latest amenities; or something in between the two. Motor yachts with planing hulls are ideal for you if you want to zip between destinations quickly. They are sleek, sexy and ideal for speed demons. However, be aware that they consume more fuel and will be less stable at anchor.

Motor yachts with displacement and semi-displacement hulls are generally slower, but offer more space as well as stability at anchor. The largest yachts in the international charter fleet are all displacement or semi-displacement.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Italy

There are plenty of sailing yachts for charter in Italy. Choose between a high-performance ketch, a classic sloop or a catamaran for increased on-board volume.

The country’s west coast is better for experienced sailors who aren’t afraid of wind and swell. The east side is more relaxed, and you can easily incorporate some island-hopping around Croatia into your vacation.

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget in Italy. The average prices for motor and sailing yacht charter in Italy are as follows;

  • An Italy motor yacht rental can range from $32,600 to $1.3m per week plus expenses
  • A sailing yacht charter in Italy averages from $29,000 to $560k weekly plus expenses

Italy’s charter season runs between April and October. Peak season is in July and August, when the mercury’s at its peak and rainfall and wind levels are at their lowest. Savvy charterers looking to save some money should consider chartering a yacht in Italy during shoulder season, which is generally between April and May, and September and October. While these months aren’t as lively as peak season, you can still enjoy warm weather, fewer tourists, and less competition for slips.

Turquoise waters of Sardinia in Italy

Italy’s west coast is the most popular region for yacht charters, and most of clients will usually book a week or more in order to fully experience all that this slice of paradise has to offer.

Most yacht rentals begin in Naples with access to the most popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Sardinia . For yacht charters on the Italian Riviera, most people begin in Genoa .

You can browse our selection of tailor-made itineraries to help you choose the type of vacation that’s right for you;

Where to End a Italy Yacht Charter

The most popular destination for beginning or ending a yacht charter is by far and wide Naples , especially for the Amalfi Coast, thanks to its excellent international links and well-provisioned superyacht marinas.

While exploring Italy by yacht, you will find plenty of marinas that cater to a wide range of superyachts. This includes:

  • Marina di Stabia  is a luxury marina close to Naples, which caters to yachts up to 100m.
  • Marina Molo Luise  is a second option close to Naples, which caters to yachts measuring up to 140m.
  • Porto Lotti , located in the Italian Riviera, caters to yachts of up to 100m.
  • Darsena Fontanelle on the East Coast has a maximum capacity of 60m.
  • Venice Yacht Pier , which has the capacity to host yachts of up to 120m.

Italy is one of our most popular destinations in the summer months. Therefore, advanced booking is crucial if you want to secure your perfect yacht, in your ideal destination on your preferred dates.

Your broker will also need plenty of time to tailor an itinerary to suit you, and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in marinas. We recommened booking up to 3 months in advance to give your yacht charter broker the optimum time to organise everything down to the last detail.

Italy yacht charter itineraries.

Our wide selection of itineraries has been curated with the help of brokers and yachting experts to ensure each one is perfectly tailored for a luxury yacht charter. To make it easier to choose the right fit for you and your party, you can browse our itineraries based on the number of days you’re planning to spend chartering.

From Portofino to Positano and everywhere in between, Italy is home to a variety of charter hotspots. If you’re looking to explore one region in Italy, we recommend an itinerary that covers between 5-7 days. This will give you enough time to spend on shore discovering the delights of new towns and pretty villages, while also enjoying some down time on deck.

If you’re looking to explore two regions that aren’t far from each other (for example the Amalfi Coast and Sardinia) you should consider 7 days. Your itinerary can incorporate an overnight cruise to ensure you don’t waste a day underway.

For more than two regions, or if you’re looking to spend more than one night in any destination, you should consider an itinerary that is longer than 7 days. This will give you enough time to fully experience everything that this beautiful Mediterranean destination has to offer.

Italy is a vast country that covers many sub-regions, so be sure to consider this when browsing our itineraries. Many people will choose to start and end their vacation in Italy, but it’s also possible to incorporate neighbouring countries into an itinerary; a popular destination is the South of France, but you could also incorporate Croatia or Greece.

Italy Yacht Charter Q&A

Italy is one of the yachting capitals of the world, and certain regions are extremely busy during peak season.

You should start the booking process as early as possible, particularly if you’re looking to spend some nights in port. Marinas such as Marina Grande in Capri and Marina di Portofino are among the most in-demand in the Mediterranean, so be sure to let your broker know if you’d like to book a berth in either of these.

As with all popular travel destinations, Italy can be congested and touristy in the height of summer. Cultural sites and landmarks will always be popular attractions, but you can avoid the crowds by dining at exclusive restaurants and beach clubs, which you can find in our Points of Interest section.

In most European countries, VAT is charged on yacht charters. The percentage varies from country to country. Italy charges 22% on the cost of the charter, however, there are some instances where this can be reduced depending on time spent chartering in international (or non-EU) waters. Talk to your charter broker for more information.

If you’re looking to explore one or two areas of Italy, we recommend a 7-day itinerary. However if you’re looking to explore multiple regions of Italy, you should plan a longer itinerary. Luckily, there’s plenty of room for flexibility and longer and shorter itineraries can be arranged according to the needs of your charter party.

With a huge variety of yachts to choose from, there’s a charter yacht in Italy to suit every budget.

For a mid-sized motor yacht during peak season, you can expect to pay anywhere between $90,000 to $300,000 per week plus expenses during peak season.

You should be aware that the price displayed next to the yachts on our site are base rates, and do not cover additional expenses.

Additional costs include the cost of fuel, berthing, VAT, crew tips and food and beverages. You should factor these costs in and typically expect to pay upwards of 30 - 35% of the base rate on top of your charter fee.

To help you get an idea of the yachts that are available, you can browse ALL crewed yachts available for charter in Italy on our site. When you’ve chosen your perfect yacht, you can make an inquiry and a charter broker will be in touch.

They will take care of the booking process, and talk to you about what you want from your vacation so that they can provide you with an incredible experience down to the very last detail.

If you’re still undecided on the yacht that you want, that’s not a problem; your charter broker will consider your requirements and recommend a selection for you.

There are plenty of opportunities for sailing in Italy. The country’s west coast is ideal for experienced sailors who don’t mind wind and swells. Islands like Sicily, Sardinia, Capri and Ischia are all great locations for a sailing vacation. Meanwhile, Italy’s sheltered east coast is typically calmer, and you could even incorporate some island-hopping in Croatia.

Our clients typically book a yacht charter in Italy between June and August. However, the weather in certain regions is still pleasant as early as June and as late in the season as September.

In September in particular, the seas are warmer and there are far fewer tourists, so this could be a good time to visit if you’re looking for a more relaxed vacation.

Where you begin your yacht charter in Italy depends on where you want to charter. One of the most popular start destinations is Naples, which provides access to all the most well-known yachting destinations including the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Sardinia and the Italian Riviera (or Liguria).

What types of motor yachts can I charter in Italy?

Superyachts.

Nothing can match the prestige of cruising Italy’s most exclusive destination aboard one of the world’s finest superyachts. A luxury superyacht offers limitless levels of luxury with outstanding onboard amenities and a larger crew ready to cater to your every need.

Multi-hull vessels

Catamarans are the most popular form of multi-hull vessel, offering superb volume courtesy of their wide beam. They also typically boast a shallower draft compared to similar classed vessels, meaning they can easily access smaller marinas. Catamarans also offer superb stability, making them great for those who want maximum comfort. Multi-hull vessels are a great choice for those seeking plenty of space, including large groups of friends and families.

Expedition yachts

Expedition yachts are built to cruise the world’s most remote regions; however, they have appeal in the Mediterranean as these world-class vessels boast an enhanced number of tenders and water toys. If you want maximum adventure in Italy, charter a luxury crewed expedition vessel.

Sports yachts

Sports yachts are built for speed and are great for zipping along the Italian coastline. These charter vessels typically boast a planing hull, enabling them to reach high speeds, and are a superb option for those who want to maximize the number of ports of call in one itinerary.

Flybridge yachts

Flybridge yachts boast an elegant, large, open-air area at the top of the vessel. This voluminous space is ideal for large group gatherings and this flexible spot typically includes zoned areas for dining, sunbathing, and relaxing. Some flybridge yachts will also feature a bar and hot tub on the flybridge. The flybridge area is also a great spot for soaking up panoramic views of the Italian coastline.

Full displacement yachts

Full displacement yachts offer a smooth, quiet ride due to the hull shape that is designed to minimize the impact of the waves, especially in open seas. Due to their design, displacement motor yachts often boast spacious interiors when compared with planing yachts or sports yachts and are the perfect way to enjoy a truly relaxing Mediterranean vacation in Italy.

No matter what type of motor yacht you want to charter in Italy, Moran Yacht & Ship can connect you with your ideal vessel. Our team has access to the finest Italy yachts for charter and will craft a bespoke itinerary that perfectly matches your desired vacation experience. Contact our luxury yacht brokers today.

What is the Advanced Provisioning Allowance?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance – or APA – is an additional fee that is paid on top of the base charter rate. This fee covers non-fixed costs, such as food and beverage, fuel, berthing fees, and on-land excursions. Your luxury yacht broker will estimate the APA based on your itinerary and vacation experience. At the end of your charter, the captain will provide a detailed breakdown of all costs incurred during your Italy yacht charter, and any funds left in the APA will be immediately returned to you.

How many crew will my Italy private yacht charter have?

The number of crew aboard a crewed motor yacht charter in Italy will vary depending on the size of the vessel; however, all crewed yachts will include, at the very least, a captain and several deckhands and stews/stewardesses. The world’s largest vessels can boast a crew of more than 20.

What amenities can I expect?

Every luxury yacht for charter is unique, so amenities vary between each vessel. Common amenities aboard a luxury motor yacht include:

  • Swimming pools, almost all will be heated and some will also include counter-currents for fitness. Swimming pools on luxury yachts are often surrounded by sun pads, enabling you to soak up the Mediterranean sun.
  • Hot tubs are a popular hub on luxury yachts, often located on the aft, bow, or flybridge. Enjoy a soak in your private yacht’s hot tub while enjoying a handcrafted cocktail prepared by the crew.
  • Fully equipped gym. Expect state-of-the-art equipment, including bikes, treadmills, ellipticals, and weight-lifting equipment. Some luxury yachts will also include a dedicated fitness trainer as part of the crew, helping you to maintain your fitness regimen at sea.
  • Spa area, including treatment rooms. Some luxury Italy charter yachts will also include various wellness facilities, including a sauna, steam room, and hammam.
  • Beach clubs are typically located on a yacht’s aft, providing a seamless connection with the ocean. They often boast plenty of loungers and sun pads as well as a bar.
  • Cinema room with state-of-the-art audio equipment; a superb way to enjoy family movie nights! Have your yacht’s crew prepare popcorn and your favorite treats and drinks for the ultimate cinematic experience.
  • Voluminous salons, deck spaces, and staterooms ideal for intimate gatherings or extravagant yacht parties.
  • Garage with water toys, including jet skis, snorkeling gear, stand-up paddleboards, water skis, and inflatables. Some yachts will also include scuba diving equipment and fishing gear.
  • Tender vessel, ideal for quickly accessing small ports, beaches, and coves.
  • Touch-and-go helicopter facilities or helipad, provide the most exclusive and private way to access your yacht from shore.

No matter what amenities you want on a luxury yacht, Moran Yacht & Ship can help find the right vessel for you. Contact our team today if you would like to charter a luxury yacht in Italy.

What currency should I take to Italy?

Italy is part of the European Union and has adopted the Euro as its official currency. Debit and credit cards are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, and attractions.

What are the visa entry requirements for an Italy yacht charter?

US citizens will require a valid passport to enter Italy, valid for at least three months before your planned departure from Italy. US citizens can travel for up to 90 days in Italy without having to secure a visa. While it is not mandatory, taking out travel and health insurance is also advisable. If you want to enjoy a private yacht charter in Italy, Moran Yacht & Ship can help. Our charter brokers will also be able to advise you on entry requirements depending on your citizenship. Contact our team today.

How many guests can I take on my Italy yacht charter?

Most luxury yachts for charter in Italy are capped at 12 guests, even if the vessel can accommodate more. This is due to additional regulations that a vessel must adhere to if they wish to carry more than 12 guests. However, a few select charter vessels for rent in Italy can accommodate a larger number of guests. No matter how many guests you want to sleep aboard a luxury motor yacht in Italy, the charter experts at Moran Yacht & Ship can help. We have access to the finest yachts for charter in Italy, including the world’s largest vessels. Contact our team today.

On a Yacht Along the Coast of Italy: Enjoy an Unforgettable Holiday!

Italy is an amazing country: warm and sunny, friendly, welcoming and very diverse. Even if you've already visited Italy several times, a yacht journey along the coast will show you the Italian treasures from a new and unknown side. It is a guarantee that you will have a lot of fun and joy during such a trip.

Warm and gentle Mediterranean Sea, nice and cool Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas, the Sicilian and Sardinian Seas, the Adriatic, the Ionian Sea... there are so many seas around Italy that it can't be compared with any other country. You would ask - what could be a more suitable place for a leisurely, relaxing and at the same time rich in impressions yacht holiday than Italy?

10 reasons for Yacht Chartering Italy

In fact, there are many more reasons, but let's take a look at some of them:

  • there are several major international airports in Italy, so it's easy to choose the closest one to the place of embarkation and start your journey easily;
  • the natural beauty of the Italian coast is magnificent, and you will enjoy both admiring it and taking hundreds of gorgeous photos and videos;
  • the sea breeze in summer makes you feel much more comfortable during hot July and August days;
  • there are no harsh storms in the Italian seas during a yachting season;
  • local beaches, especially in Sardinia, are one of the best in Europe, and you will have the opportunity to make sure it is so;
  • diving into the warm sea directly from the deck of a charter yacht is an incomparable pleasure and exclusive privilege;
  • you can go to any port you like at any time according to your planned itinerary and enjoy excellent local cuisine or exciting shopping;
  • you decide how much time you'd like to devote to knowing the sights and local gems - which ones to visit, and which ones to skip or leave for the next time;
  • it's possible to plan a comfortable itinerary for any season, and for a specific occasion, so there's no need to wait for the summer holidays;
  • a yacht charter in Italy allows you to visit not only popular tourist locations but also little-known small islands with their special unique flavour.

If you're going to Italy for the first time, of course, start with visiting the most popular places. Legendary Rome, the golden coast of Emilia-Romagna province, ancient Naples, stunning and magnificence Florence. Venice - a unique city on the water with canals, gondolas and gondoliers, the legendary San Marco's square and the ancient Doge's Palace are waiting to be seen for the first time. And let's not forget the islands of Sicily and Sardinia - two of the most popular yachting destinations in the whole Mediterranean.

Italian food you should definitely try when chartering a yacht here

Nutritionists believe that Mediterranean cuisine is the key to healthy and active longevity. So when you're in Italy, you are welcome to enjoy delicious and healthy meals prepared from fresh local ingredients. There are a lot of vegetables and fruits, fish and seafood, whole grain flour and olive oil. Even though Italian cuisine is very high in calories, these calories consist of healthy natural nutrients.

If you appreciate wine, add a glass of red or white from a local vineyard to your meal, and enjoy life. Oh, and let's not forget the aroma of coffee in Italy: an invigorating ristretto or a light lungo - the choice is yours!

Here is a short list of what you should definitely try when chartering a yacht in Italy:

  • thick and nutritious minestrone;
  • exquisite carpaccio with olive oil;
  • pasta with different sauces;
  • tortellini and ravioli;
  • pizza that's being prepared right in front of you;
  • risotto with meat, mushrooms or seafood;
  • super tasty lasagna;
  • creamy gelato ice cream and delicate tiramisu dessert.

Weather in Italy: what you need to know when going on a yacht cruise

Summer days are a true blessing in Italy. The sea warms up to +27°C, and the air temperature is usually +34°C. There may be light rainy moments, but this doesn't affect your yachting vacation.

Don't be afraid of very hot days when you're on a yacht, as the fresh sea breeze will cool off the air a bit and let you enjoy the journey. The northern and central regions of Italy are a bit cooler than the southern part of the peninsula. And the real heat reigns in Sicily and Sardinia.

Top places to visit in Italy when chartering a yacht

Yacht travellers are so lucky that not only the inland part of Italy has beautiful and interesting places to see. The coast offers an infinity of historically significant, inspiring and nice spots to discover too. Some of them are so close to the water, that you don't even need to disembark:

  • ancient Genoa with many attractions;
  • San-Remo, known throughout the world for its annual music festival;
  • Bordighera with its sumptuous impressive architecture;
  • Albenga, a city that has managed to preserve the unique atmosphere of the Middle Ages;
  • Anzio, one of the bright pearls of the Tyrrhenian coast;
  • Naples with its cathedrals, frescoes and the mesmerizing panorama of Vesuvius;
  • the islands of Ischia and Capri that attract tourists from all over the world with their natural beauty;
  • Amalfi, a resort at the very foot of the cliffs with its impressively beautiful beaches;
  • Sicilian Palermo, where ancient architecture is harmoniously blended with a modern look;
  • The coast of Sardinia steals the hearts even of the most experienced travellers with its unique aura

And this is only a tiny part of Italian beauty that's worthy of attention.

A yacht charter along the coast of Italy is a special form of relaxation. It can't be compared to staying in a hotel. While cruising around, you discover so much and collect so many memories. Plus, you are doing it in comfort without a need for packing and unpacking every time you're in a new place.

Just try it, and you will definitely want to do it again!

MYBA Charter Show 2025 venue ...

  • Yacht Charter Locations >
  • Mediterranean Yacht Charter >

Below we explore the right time to charter and some of the key places to visit. You can also browse the yachts available in Italy this year. An Italy yacht charter vacation brings this central Mediterranean country’s beautiful culture and scenery to life. You can experience many different aspects of Italy, including the restaurants, art, history and colour in the comfort of your favourite luxury charter yacht on the Mediterranean and Adriatic coastlines. The famous Italian places you can explore include Naples , Capri , Amalfi , Portofino , Sardinia , Rome ,  Sicily and Venice , to name a few.

Cost To Charter a Yacht In Italy:

The cost to charter a crewed yacht in Italy begins at a price of around 5,000 Euros per week plus advanced provisioning allowance (APA) expenses, typically around 30%. The most expensive luxury Italy superyacht charter holiday costs over 1 million Euros per week plus APA.

The Italy Charter Season:

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Italy season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season for Italy is in July and August. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes. Other good times to rent your yacht are generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers. The types of yachts available in Italy include motor yacht, sailing yacht charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamarans, power boats, sailboat, luxury yachts and the ever increasing mega and superyacht charter.

Expert Charter Broker Quote:

“I think Italy is so special because it truly has something to offer everyone. Whether you are seeking a romantic honeymoon, a family vacation, or a holiday with a few of your closest friends, Italy can provide exactly what you’re looking for.” – Trina Howes Luxury Yacht Charter Broker in her article titled ‘ Italy – Why is this Charter Location so Special? ’

Superyacht moored inThe Italian Riviera - Rapallo and Cinque-terra

Many Italy and Amalfi private charters begin in Naples. Naples is a city with a distinct energy - chaotic yet charming, cluttered yet beautiful. Rather daunting to the virgin eye,

Naples has a way of shedding your inhibitions, to present a proud and colorful culture, with an alluring hospitality. Naples is the yacht charter hub of southern Italy and the gateway to Capri and the Amalfi Coast. The Isle of Capri and Amalfi present some of the most spectacular coastlines of the whole Mediterranean.

AMALFI COAST - COSTIERA AMALFITANA

A yacht holiday in Italy must incorporate the stunning Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi coast is around a day sail south of Naples. Amalfi and Positano , like Capri, attract visitors and charter yachts of the highest prestige. The 50 km of the Amalfi coastline stretches mainly from Sorrento to Salerno . It remains a place of rare and incredible beauty. The hillside towns are a truly magnificent display of Italian engineering and architecture. Terrace houses and buildings cling to steep cliffs, rising from the coastline.

Portofino is another must see. It is a tiny town of cobble-stone streets, framed by hills of silvery, ancient olive groves. From the top of the hill, the views of the harbor and coastline are breathtaking. Cafes, boutique shops and gelataria’s spill out into the harbor piazza. The portside cafes are a great place to sit and watch the glamorous yachting world go by. Further down the Italian coast, you'll sail upon 'Cinque Terre' - A succession of five coastal villages, all with the same spectacular views of the seas. These villages are less expensive and sophisticated, than their more popular sister, Portofino. There is a stunning and famous walk along this coastal route, linking the five towns romantically called 'Via Dell 'Amore' ( The Way of Love ).

A charter in Sardinia, Italy is also quite an experience. Sardinia is a universe unto itself. It's an island of Italy, where the local language is incomprehensible to all other Italians.

An island with one of Europe's most stunning coastlines; it's waters teem with fish; it's golden sands disappear into oceans of blue; it's rugged mountains are covered with flocks of sheep producing cheese so pungent, your palate will never forget.

Beneteau Italy, Mediterranean

Venice is a city that’s surrounded by so much water, so being afloat on a yacht vacation is a fantastic way to experience this classic Mediterranean city. Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the world , with its intricate web of canals, charming gondoliers, glorious renaissance architecture and narrow cobbled streets. Venice is an essential stop on any Adriatic yacht charter holiday. On your charter boat, take a cruise down the Grand Canal. From the deck of your charter boat, you’ll be able to pass by sights such as the Ca'Foscari, Palazzo Grassi, Guggenheim Museum and the Accademia Bridge.

Why CharterWorld? CharterWorld is a specialist charter company with all the crewed yachts in Italy and the Mediterranean at the best price. With the industry’s top professional yacht brokers and every yacht in the Mediterranean available you will be well served. If there is a boat or cruising area in Italy, or elsewhere, that you are interested in which is not covered here, please contact us and we will provide you with that information personally and free of charge.

Where in the Mediterranean is the Amalfi Coast located?

The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline along Italy’s western coast in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This stretch of coastline has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. The Amalfi Coast is located in the Province of Salerno, famed for its stunning beaches, archaeological and historical sites, and spectacular scenery.

What's better, a motor yacht or sailing yacht charter in Amalfi?

Whether a  motor  or luxury  sailing  yacht rental is best depends entirely on your preferences and desired experiences. A luxury motor boat will typically boast a larger volume, including spacious saloons, cabins, and sun decks, and will often feature more  amenities  than a comparably sized sailing boat. Motor boats are also more accessible and offer enhanced comfort levels. A luxury sailing yacht, however, provides the sheer thrill and romance of harnessing the power of Mother Nature. Indeed, nothing can be more spectacular than watching the sails flutter in the wind while you cruise the Amalfi Coast. For many, a yacht wich sails thanks the wing, without the use of enginee also fosters a greater connection with the sea. Of course, whether you opt for a luxury motor boat or sailing vessel, you will enjoy an unforgettable experience at sea, with a highly professional crew ready to cater to your every need and a personalized itinerary. Our Amalfi superyacht charter specialists at Northrop & Johnson will be able to advise you on the pros and cons of both motor yachts and sailing boats and then handpick a selection of vessels that meet your needs.

Amalfi Boat Rental: What to do on Capri?

Winding roads on luxury yacht charter Italy

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What to see on your luxury yacht charter in italy.

On the Italian Riviera, take in the colourful buildings and laid-back pace of the Cinque Terre and Portofino, enjoying a walk through one of the region’s charming cliff top villages, then jump in a car or helicopter for a day trip to see the historical cities of Pisa or Florence.

In the summer months, many elect for a crewed yacht charter in Italy. As the perfect addition to any luxury yacht charter in the Mediterranean, Sardinia’s waters are bustling with visiting superyachts at anchor and within the marina of its main town of Porto Cervo, a honeypot for business magnates and global celebrities alike. Relax and be pampered in a world-class spa and then head out to Porto Cervo’s luxury boutiques or try a round of golf. Explore the island’s historical attractions including the town of Alghero, with its maze of alleyways packed with shops selling local produce and an abundance of medieval churches. By night, head to one of Porto Cervo’s stylish restaurants before hitting one of the lavish nightlife spots for which the town is known.

The peaceful and picturesque neighbour of lively Sardinia, Elba offers those on a luxury yacht charter in Italy; with the chance to get away from it all on this quaint island dotted with secluded beaches backing onto mountains and green forests. The island’s largest town is Portoferraio, with its fascinating 16th-century Medici fortress, great for a daytime tour, as well as Villa dei Mulini, Napoleon Bonaparte’s home while in exile in 1814.

A tour of the Amalfi Coast allows you to dial back the pace and relax at anchor while gem-hued waters lap at the vertiginous cliff-faces dotted with ancient towns. The classic Southern Italian charm of seaside towns like Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi have been preserved and are a highlight for many visiting superyachts. Inland excursions to stunning Ravello, perched 365 metres above the sapphire-blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, can include visits to the town’s famous cliffside gardens or an alfresco evening concert at the Moorish-style Villa Rufolo in the summer. And the island of Capri is an essential stop on many an Italian yacht charter itinerary, with its famous Blue Grotto cave, upscale luxury ateliers and boutique shops selling handmade leather goods, homemade limoncello and ceramics.

A short distance across the Tyrrhenian Sea takes you to Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean. Sicily’s capital Palermo brims with busy markets, art galleries and historical architecture that make a great day trip ashore for the family, while the island’s large choice of beautiful beaches along 1,000 kilometres of coastline will have you believing you are in the Caribbean. For more active and adventurous yacht charterers, a hike up the famous active volcano Stromboli will be on the bucket list.

Rent a yacht in Italy to explore Venice. Moor up right next to the famous St Mark’s Square and take in the rich history and architecture of one of Europe’s most enigmatic cities. Take a romantic trip by gondola or private water taxi to grand homes once inhabited by the likes of Byron or dine in authentic, hidden ostiaries. The city is also host to international events such as the Venice Biennial and the Venice Film Festival.

Rent a Yacht in Italy: when is the best time for a luxury yacht rental in Italy?

The main charter season in Italy falls between May and September, although the weather and water can still be warm enough to enjoy in October. Average temperatures in Italy range between highs of approximately 24C (75F) in May to 31C (87F) in August. The sea temperature in June is usually around 24C (74F), peaking at 26C (79F) in August.

Where to anchor on your private yacht charter in Italy?

On the Italian Riviera, Portofino is one of the most popular port towns for a superyacht visit. Moor up directly onto the edge of the town and walk off the lazarette directly into one of the authentic Italian restaurants or luxury boutiques.

The inimitable Porto Cervo is one of Italy’s most famous port towns and home to the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. With luxury facilities onsite and playing host to a range of regattas and sailing events throughout the summer, it is a hive of yachting activity.

Elba is a much quieter island retreat for cruising superyachts and its main port town is Portoferraio, which is able to cater to vessels of up to 65 metres in length. The town’s many historical attractions provide day trips ashore for the whole family.

The Amalfi Coast is mostly a destination for superyachts that stay at anchor with tender trips into the small fishing villages ashore, but the purpose-built Marina di Stabia to the south of Naples offers a good point of embarkation for any luxury superyacht charter in Italy.

Venice is a popular point of embarkation for an Adriatic yacht charter. With great international transport links, it offers a number of marinas for superyachts including Marina Vento di Venezia, Marina Fiorita and the Salute Mooring posts located directly in front of St Mark’s Square at the head of the Giudecca Canal.

In the summer months, Sardinia’s waters are bustling with visiting superyachts at anchor and within the marina of its main town of Porto Cervo, a honeypot for business magnates and global celebrities alike. Relax and be pampered in a world-class spa and then head out to Porto Cervo’s luxury boutiques or try a round of golf. Featured Italy Yacht Charters

Italy has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. July is the hottest month, while January is the coldest. The late Spring and early Fall months are typically sunny and make for excellent yacht charter vacations.

As many festivals occur along the coast, September is best for a relaxing and local experience. On a private yacht, explore Italy's local food and music festivals, which are scattered among the small fishing villages.

When most people think of Italian food, they think of pasta and pizza. However, the traditional cuisine of Italy includes many other tastes, such as seafood, ossobuco, risotto, and veal saltimbocca. Tiramisu, panna cotta, or lemon cake made with fresh Amalfi lemons are great ways to top off a delicious meal.

It is no wonder that Italy yacht charters are often the first choice for travelers interested in quality food and wine. A customized Italy yacht charter experience offers top-quality cuisine and a wide range of dining options onboard.

Iconic Italian Yacht Charter Destinations

italy yacht charters

We recommend Portofino for a romantic getaway or a high-end experience. It has unparalleled views of the Mediterranean and is one of the prettiest harbors on Earth. While an excellent choice for the summer months, this charming seaside village is best visited in the off-season. September through October are typically times when crowds are thinner.

Things to Do and to See:

  • Scuba dive. See the Statue of Christ of the Abyss, a bronze statue of Jesus by sculptor Guido Galleti. It is in San Fruttuoso Bay.
  • Visit a marine protected area, Marina Protetta Portofino, between Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, and Portofino.
  • Climb to the Church of San Giorgio and enjoy a breathtaking view.
  • See the Faro di Portofino – Lighthouse of Portofino.
  • Soak in the atmosphere of Piazza Martiri Dell’Olivetta – Heart of Portofino. The atmosphere here is reminiscent of the small fishermen’s village that Portofino once was.
  • Chiesa di San Martino – With simple but elegant architecture and a beautiful interior, San Martino Church dominates the uphill of Portofino.
  • Museo del Parco. Visit the Museum of Outdoor Statues in Portofino. There, admire works of art by some of the world’s most renowned sculptors. You can also have a nice view of Portofino Riviera from the terraced garden.

The countryside is dotted with villages. They range from historical medieval towns to modern hamlets catering to vacationers looking for a true escape. And maybe a visit to Calabria, known as the toe of the boot.

A few things to do on your charter in Italy include:

  • Take a donkey ride on Alicudi.
  • Snorkel underwater fumaroles in Panarea.
  • Sample Lipari's Malvasia wine is a sweet raisin wine produced in the Aeolian islands.
  • Have a mud bath in an open-air spa on Mount Vulcano.

Charter a yacht in Sardinia. This lush island is famous for its jagged limestone cliffs and rocky coves. It offers some of the best sailing routes in the world and is also home to some of Italy's best archaeological sites, including the Nuraghe and Domus de Janas.

Costa Smeralda of Sardinia

Costa Smeralda's crystal-clear waters and white sand beaches offer opportunities for various water sports, including snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving. Sunbathers can enjoy six miles of the pure, pristine Sardinian coastline.

Just off Sardinia's coast, the archipelago of the Maddalena Islands is best explored by yacht. Traverse the transparent green waters and stroll around the islands' quaint towns. Costa Smeralda is one of Europe's most secluded yachting destinations along the coast of Italy's southern region.

The luxury ports feature elegant restaurants and bars with sea views, while the beaches offer pink sands.

What to do on an Amalfi Coast Yacht Charter

The Amalfi Coast and Capri Islands boast a surprising string of Medieval towns perched on dramatic cliff sides and enchanting bays that can be approached by the sea on a luxury Amalfi Coast yacht charter . Discover the charming Italian streets of Positano , enjoy a drink under a bougainvillaea terrace in Sorrento , and swim in the secluded coves of Capri .

It is not surprising that jet-setters from across the globe flock to this exquisite coastline, where pastel-coloured fishing villages, sapphire waters, and delectable cuisine provides an idyllic setting for an Amalfi Coast yacht charter. Not forgetting the pristine landscape, flanked with lemon and orange groves and carpeted with Mediterranean shrubs.

On the Amalfi Coast, Positano has several beaches: from the elegant and intimate Laurito and Arienzo to the exclusive Fornillo that looks out across the sea to the Li Galli Archipelago, which is part of the Punta Campanella Marine Nature Reserve just in front of Capri. With its twisting narrow streets, ateliers specializing in hand-made goods, and the iconic stairs connecting the old town to the beach, Positano is a jewel nestled in this stretch of coastline that has no equal in the world. It is a must-see destination during crewed Amalfi Coast yacht rental.

Sorrento, Vietri , and Amalfi are equally impressive, with their elegant urban profiles and the unmatched charm of exclusive terrains popular with travellers who choose to hire a luxury yacht on the Amalfi Coast. Make sure you take the time to visit the town’s beautiful churches during your Amalfi Coast yacht rental , including the Basilica di Sant’Antonio, Sorrento’s oldest church and named after Sorrento’s patron saint. Inside you’ll find Roman artefacts, medieval paintings, and a mesmerising gilded ceiling.

An Amalfi Coast yacht charter is also the perfect occasion to glide among the grottos and Faraglioni of Anacapri and Capri and shop at their many luxury boutiques. That said, an Amalfi Coast yacht charter would be incomplete without visiting Capri’s arch of love, known as The Faraglioni di Mezzo, where three dramatic rock faces rise out of the sea, creating the famed trio of sea giants.

As a top italian Yacht Charter Company, Silver Star Yachting recommends visiting the garden of Villa Rufolo, known as the “Garden of the Soul”.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to go depends on your preferences and the experiences you seek. Generally, the peak season for yacht rentals in Italy falls between May and September, when the weather is warmest and the winds are the calmest. The peak season is from June to August when the temperature is also the hottest. In addition to good sailing conditions during this time, there are also various festivals and cultural events that take place. From lively beach parties to cultural celebrations, the summer months offer a lively and bustling atmosphere that adds an extra layer of excitement to your yacht rental experience.

For instance, if you're planning to navigate the picturesque Amalfi Coast, the months of May, June, and September often provide a perfect balance between favorable weather and fewer crowds. In contrast, if you're visiting the islands of Sardinia or Sicily, July, and August are typically the best months, as they offer sun-drenched days and a lively atmosphere.

If you're considering a bareboat charter in Italy, it's important to hold the appropriate boating license to navigate the yacht. Six people missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and one dead after tornado sinks luxury yacht off Sicily

R escuers were on Monday searching for six people – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch – who went missing after a luxury yacht was hit by a tornado and sank off the coast of Sicily, killing one of the 22 people on board.

The vessel was hit by the tornado at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to a spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard. The yacht was anchored about a half a mile from the port of Porticello on the Mediterranean island.

Four Britons and two Americans are among those missing, the spokesperson said.

A source told CNN that Lynch, the founder of software giant Autonomy, was a passenger on the yacht. The source spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Fifteen people were rescued, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, and one child was airlifted to the children’s hospital in Palermo. Eight people were hospitalized in total, according to the mayor’s office. One body was found on the hull of the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

A small waterspout – one of several types of tornadoes – developed over the area Monday morning, according to a report from the European Severe Weather Database. Other strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday, dumping more than 4 inches (100 mm) of rain in less than four hours in Brolo, east of Palermo.

The weather forecast had warned of potential strong winds, with storms across the entire southern region of Italy Sunday, the Coast Guard spokesperson added.

One survivor, Charlotte, 35, described how she battled to hold onto her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, reported Italian news agency ANSA, as a barrage of waves sank the yacht.

“In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she told journalists. “Many were screaming.”

The captain is among the survivors, the spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard said.

The 56-meter yacht called the “Bayesian,” which flies under a British flag, had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one Irish and one Sri Lankan, the spokesperson told CNN. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told CNN two of its citizens were involved in the incident, but were not among those still missing. The nationality of the dead person has not been disclosed.

The Italian fire brigade said its divers had reached the yacht’s hull 49 meters (160 feet) below sea level, according to a press statement. The brigade also dispatched helicopters to bolster the search operation.

The captain of a nearby boat said he turned on his engine to avoid crashing into the Bayesian, Reuters reported, as fierce gales swept the area.

“This morning we got this strong gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position,” he told reporters on Monday. “After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.”

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment of the yacht, a source familiar with the operations told CNN. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not say when the team is expected to arrive in Sicily.

British tycoon among those missing

Lynch, the British entrepreneur missing from the yacht, had been plagued by legal woes since 2011 , when he sold his company to tech firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion.

In June, he was acquitted of fraud by a jury in San Francisco, after prosecutors accused him of trying to inflate Autonomy’s revenue in the latest chapter of the legal saga.

He turned ground-breaking research at Cambridge University into the foundation of Autonomy, which became Britain’s biggest software company and a member of the blue-chip FTSE 100 index.

Lynch was lauded by academics and scientists and asked to advise the British government on technology and innovation.

Ownership records held by maritime information service Equasis show that the yacht is owned by the Isle of Man-registered Revtom Limited company. Revtom Limited’s latest annual return from April lists Bacares as its owner.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

CNN’s Catherine Nicholls, Benjamin Brown and Eve Brennan contributed reporting.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily

15 people were rescued and one body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, by andrea rosa and nicole winfield | the associated press • published august 19, 2024 • updated on august 19, 2024 at 3:21 pm.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

Rescue workers and divers from the Italian fire brigade as a rescue operation continues for the missing people who were on board a sailboat that sank, in Porticello, Sicily Island

Search crews say their efforts to recover the six people still not accounted for after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday will "continue without stopping".

As the second day of that operation comes to close, here's what we have learned:

  • Friends of Recaldo Thomas , the chef believed to have died in the sinking, have begun to pay tribute to his "smile that lit up a room"
  • Three more survivors have been named as Leo Eppel and South African nationals Leah Randall and Katja Chicken - all members of crew that were on board the ship when it sank
  • Six people still remain unaccounted for: Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah , Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda
  • Divers have been able to reach the lounge of the yacht but their path to the cabins has been blocked by "a world of objects"
  • The Italian coastguard says that specialist divers are "evaluating the feasibility of safely entering the wreck", but warn the search is being complicated by its " depth and the position of the hull" around 50m (164ft) below the surface
  • Jonathan Bloomer's twin brother has told the BBC his family are "coping the best we can" as they wait for updates from the rescue team's ongoing efforts

We're going to pause our coverage now but you can read more about the second day of the Bayesian search operation here .

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch is still missing alongside his 18-year-old daughter

Six people remain unaccounted for after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, including a father and daughter, as well as two married couples.

UK businessman Mike Lynch, who helped establish Cambridge Neurodynamics and co-founded the firm Autonomy, is still missing alongside his daughter Hannah Lynch , an 18-year-old student.

Jonathan Bloomer , the chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank International, and his wife Judy Bloomer were also on the yacht when it sank and have not yet been found.

Chris Morvillo , a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewellery designer, have also been confirmed as missing.

Earlier we reported that the body of a man recovered near the sunken Sicilian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas , a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat.

His friends have described him as having "a smile that lit up the room".

Jonathan and Judy Bloomer - who are still missing following the sinking of the Bayesian yacht - are “incredibly generous people”, the reverend of their local church says.

Speaking to BBC South East, Rev Tim Edwards, from Knockholt in Kent, says “at the moment there’s an awful lot that we don’t know”.

He describes the couple as being “very much” part of the village community and active with local charities.

What are waterspouts? published at 19:52 British Summer Time 20 August 19:52 BST 20 August

According to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder, the Bayesian left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor".

Witnesses later described seeing a waterspout form during a storm that hit in the area overnight, and - as mentioned in our last post - it is believed to have struck the yacht before it sank.

Most are familiar with what tornadoes look like - they are rotating columns of destructive winds, protruding from the base of clouds down to the ground. According to BBC Weather, waterspouts are just that too, but they form over water rather than land.

Instead of dust and debris swirling around the core of strong winds, it is water mist whipped up from the surface.

Like tornadoes, most are only short-lived, narrow columns and are not easily picked out on weather radars, so many will go unreported.

How could the yacht have sunk? published at 19:39 British Summer Time 20 August 19:39 BST 20 August

It is believed the Bayesian was struck by a tornado over the water - otherwise known as a waterspout - causing the luxury yacht to capsize and sink to the seabed.

There are separate reports the boat's mast snapped during the freak storm, while other factors in the boat's tipping over could include water entering through hatches and doors which might have been left open because of warm weather off the Italian coast.

Graphic showing a boat with a mast standing straight and 1) says "High winds or a tornado-like waterspout may have tipped the yacht onto its side. The second image shows it leaning at 45 degrees in the water and says 2) "Water could then have entered hatches and doors left open because of warm weather". The third picture shows it lying on its side on the seabed and says 3) "The yacht is on its starboard (right) side on the seabed, 50m underwater"

"He is so approachable and a very easy person to talk to," Richard Smith, who lives in the Suffolk village of Pettistree, says. "A nice sense of humour."

"You might think with all that money that he would be a difficult person to talk to, but in fact he was a very easy person to talk to."

One of Mike Lynch's neighbours says she was "horrified" to find out he was missing and describes it as the "worst news".

"I just couldn't believe it, I thought this can't be right," Ruth Leigh, of Pettistree in Suffolk, says.

Leigh says they have lived near each other for around 15 years and describes Lynch as a "fantastic neighbour" and a "very charitable man".

"Even though he was incredibly wealthy and a very important person he never ever gave that impression.

"Whenever he met you he always remembers your name, he would chat to you - incredibly friendly and down to earth, which we thought was a great quality," she adds.

Did the yacht’s keel play a role in it sinking? published at 18:46 British Summer Time 20 August 18:46 BST 20 August

By Tom Edgington

There has been speculation about the type of keel on the Bayesian and whether it may have been a factor in it sinking.

The website for Perini Navi – the yacht’s builder – is currently not available. However, by searching internet archives BBC Verify has obtained the boat’s 2018 brochure.

In the “features and performance” section, the document gives dimensions for the keel in an "up" position - 4.05m (13ft) - and in a "down" position - 9.83m (32ft) - suggesting it is retractable.

The BBC has contacted Perini Navi but has not had a reply.

A keel is a support structure underneath the boat which projects downwards and helps keep it balanced on the surface.

Certain boats might require a retractable keel in order to enter shallow water without getting stuck.

We don’t know if the Bayesian’s keel was up or down at the time it was struck by a storm.

However, Andrew Fairbrass who runs a large yacht engineering business says “when you're sailing, you have to keep the keel down and it does make a big difference to stability”.

In cloudy skies and on choppy waters, the search has gone on all day, a helicopter scouring the site where the Bayesian capsized as divers plunged deep below.

They’re trying to access the wreckage of the yacht that was hit by a tornado-like waterspout, and is now 50m (164ft) underwater.

Given the depth, each dive can only be 10 minutes, and with the boat still largely intact it’s hard to get access inside.

British investigators are now here to assess what happened during the extreme weather that hit the Bayesian.

Severe heat and violent storms had prompted a weather alert before the yacht went down.

Tonight the search goes on - but any hope of a Mediterranean miracle survival has all but vanished.

Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer's twin brother has told the BBC his family are "coping the best we can" as rescue workers continue to search for him off the coast of Sicily.

The banker is one of six people still missing since the Bayesian yacht capsized.

Jeremy Bloomer tells the BBC he has not received any new updates on the search efforts to find Jonathan, beyond that divers are struggling to access the wreck of the boat.

He says: "It's a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don't know."

Jeremy continues: "He was my older [brother] by half an hour. So it means a lot when you lose a twin brother. It's still wait and see, so fingers crossed."

Asked how he was coping, he says the situation is "terrible" and something that's "beyond your wildest imagination".

Two members of crew named as survivors of yacht sinking published at 17:39 British Summer Time 20 August 17:39 BST 20 August

We've just heard from the Italian coastguard, which has named two more survivors of the yacht sinking.

South African nationals Leah Randall and Katja Chicken, who worked as crew members on the Bayesian, managed to get to safety after the vessel sank in the early hours of Monday morning.

In total , 15 of the 22 people on board have been rescued . Among them are:

  • Mike Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares
  • Charlotte Golunski, her husband James and their one-year-old daughter
  • Ayla Ronald, who worked as a lawyer for Mike Lynch, and her partner

Twelve people were vacationing on Mike Lynch 's yacht, alongside 10 crew members, when it sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily. The gathering was reportedly a celebration.

Earlier this year, Lynch was cleared of fraud and conspiracy charges arising from the sale of his firm Autonomy to US tech giant Hewlett Packard. The decade-long legal battle had led to Lynch's extradition from the UK.

Upon being cleared of the charges in June, the British entrepreneur said he was "elated" and thanked his legal team for their "tireless work". Some of them were on the yacht alongside him when it sank.

Chris Morvillo , a lawyer for Clifford Chance - the law firm that represented Lynch - is among the six people still missing. So is his wife Neda Morvillo , an American jewellery designer.

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at the same law firm, also worked on Lynch's case. Both she and her partner were invited to the yacht and were rescued when it sank.

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer - who appeared as a defence witness for Lynch during his trial - and his wife Judy Bloomer were on the boat when disaster struck. Both are unaccounted for.

Charlotte Golunski, the board director of Luminance - an artificial intelligence platform founded by Lynch - was on board, along with her husband and one-year-old daughter. All three survived.

Lynch's wife Angela Bacares and daughter Hannah were also there. Bacares has been rescued but 18-year-old Hannah is still missing.

A search and rescue operation, which includes boats scouring the surface of the sea and divers examining the wreck of the Bayesian yacht on the seabed, is still ongoing.

As we've been reporting, the specialist diving team have been struggling to access the cabins on the wreck - which is around 50m below the surface - because of debris blocking access.

The body of a man recovered near the Bayesian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat.

His friends have been paying tribute to him. Gareth Williams, who lives in Antigua, knew Thomas for 30 years.

"I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit," he told me.

The two grew up together in Antigua, where Recaldo spent his time during off-season.

"He would come over to mine over the weekend and he would sing. He had the deepest, most sultry voice in the world, and a smile that lit up the room.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house. He loved yachting, but he was tired."

Eli Fuller met Recaldo some 25 years ago while out socialising in Antigua.

"He knew everybody and was friends with everybody. He'd always ask how you were doing, how your family was - he was always positive.

"Personality was very important in his job. The world's richest people want to hang out with someone social. He was sought after."

He added that Thomas became an inspiration to young black children who wanted to get into yachting.

"The kids would see all these white people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man travelling all over the world - it was important for our community."

Search efforts complicated by wreck's position underwater, coastguard says published at 16:42 British Summer Time 20 August 16:42 BST 20 August Breaking

The search for the missing six passengers "continues without stopping" but divers have not found anything, the Italian coastguard says.

The coastguard says that specialist divers are "evaluating the feasibility of safely entering the wreck", but that the search is being "complicated by the depth and the position of the hull lying on the seabed" - at 50m below the surface.

It adds there is no trace of "hydrocarbon pollution" - meaning oil or other similar fuel is not leaking from the wreck.

Two members of search and rescue team in orange coastguard boat off the coast of Sicily

We're well into the second day of search and rescue operations for the six people still missing after the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.

Here are some of the factors which make this a highly complex process:

  • The wreckage is currently 50m (165ft) below the surface of the water
  • Furniture and a "world of objects" are blocking access to the cabins of the yacht, hampering the divers' access
  • Divers can only spend 12 minutes below the surface of the water, meaning by the time they reach the Bayesian, they only have 10 minutes to search the wreck
  • The bridge of the yacht - the room where the captain controls the vessel - is full of electrical cables
  • Divers are unable to see inside the yacht , though a possible entry point could be through a 3cm (1.2in)-thick glass window
  • Specialist divers who are trained to work in small spaces have had to be flown in from Rome and Sardinia

Lord Deben says his friend Mike Lynch is "wonderfully kind and companionable"

Lord Deben, former Conservative MP John Gummer, describes his missing friend Mike Lynch as "a wonderfully kind and companionable" man.

"He is the kind of person who carries this enormously clever mind, but carries it so lightly, and is always interested in what others have to say and might contribute," he says in a statement.

"It is a very serious moment... for if we have lost him, we’ve lost a very wonderful man."

He adds: "It is one of the cruellest blows that could possibly be made if it turns out that he hasn’t survived because he had so much to give, and he was giving it.

"This is a man of outstanding ability, but also the sort of person whom we were all very, very fortunate to know."

Water conditions could have led to waterspout, says oceanographer published at 15:54 British Summer Time 20 August 15:54 BST 20 August

Dr Simon Boxall is a Senior Lecturer at Southampton University

Dr Simon Boxall is a senior lecturer at Southampton University

Dr Simon Boxall, an oceanographer from the University of Southampton, says "there's a lot still to be discovered" about what led to the sinking of the Bayesian.

Asked about reports the boat may have been hit by a waterspout , he tells the BBC they are "not normally dangerous" but that would depend on the intensity of the weather system.

Boxall says: "What's interesting is that we saw very light winds up until the time at which the yacht was hit.

"And then suddenly, the wind went from about three or four miles an hour to 30 or 40 miles an hour, and then dropped again. And that was on land.

"So it's a sort of precursor to there being a major sort of squall or even a waterspout that would have hit the ship."

The ocean to the north of Sicily is more than three degrees warmer than it should be at this time of year, he adds, creating a "perfect storm" for waterspouts to occur.

Captain Karsten Borner - a man with long white hair and glasses

The captain of the Dutch-flagged ship that rescued Bayesian passengers from the water before emergency services arrived has spoken again to Reuters.

Captain Karsten Borner has previously explained how he worked to keep his ship upright during the storm, before noticing the luxury yacht that had been behind his vessel had disappeared.

"I don't absolutely know what they did. I only know that they went flat with a mast on the water and that they sank in two minutes," Borner says.

He says the sea temperature, which meteorologists have told us was at an extreme high of 30C, is "way too hot for the Mediterranean, and this causes, for sure, heavy storms".

British tech giant Mike Lynch missing after possible tornado flips yacht

luxury yacht rental italy

British tech giant Mike Lynch, his lawyer and four other people are among those missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among the six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body has been recovered, and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello, near Palermo, where it had been anchored.

RELATED STORY | New tools help better predict storms and alert the public for hurricane season

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and was able to rescue some of the 15 survivors.

The Bayesian was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast, one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites list it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified only as Charlotte, said she had momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother.

Eight of the 15 people rescued and taken to shore at Porticello were hospitalized. One body was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for, said Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire rescue service.

RELATED STORY | Hurricane Ernesto weakens into tropical storm as it moves away from Bermuda over open waters

Rescue crews located the vessel and deep-water police divers were trying to access the hull, Cari said. The operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

”I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up so early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

The seven who weren't rescued included one crew member and six passengers, the coast guard said.
