Boat: Beneteau 323 | 22 extended by three feet). Helms was a company located in Irmo, SC and built throughout the 70's before closing doors in the 80's. We knew the well through the Sailing Club. The 27 was a fine , a "big boat", by Lake Murray standards, back in the day. John Helms may still live in , you may be able to find him through or perhaps facebook. He is happy to depart information about their line and offer any necessary. I'll PM you if I can find any of Johnny's contact information. If you contact him first, tell him that Greg Handal says "hello". |

Boat: Menger 19' Catboat | . Did a lot of weekend cruising on the Chesapeake in it. It had a bolt-on external IIRC. Don't know if the 27 was the same, but I suspect so as the 27 was designed by the same guy and appeared to be just a slightly larger version of the 24. I made a number of improvements to my during the 4 years I had it -- internal halyards led aft, carpentry, table, etc. The fellow who bought it from me turned around and it the next year to Stuart Windley, the of the 24 and the 27. He said he liked my modifications. |

The company's first boat was the Helms 25. Eventually a 27 was added, followed by a 30, which was later replaced by a 32 footer. Several hundred of the 24, 25, 27 and 30 foot boats were built, but only 10 of the 32 footer were ever built. ... Great job on the Helms 25 review! Helms 25 kwaltersmi: I bought my 1976 Helms 25 about a year ago. I sail in Delaware and this was a Peroia, Ill fresh water boat. It was complete with original trailer and a good condition 15 hp outboard. One main and 2 head sails that are old but clean and not torn but stretched out from age. Had a survey done on the deck before buying.
The particular Helms 25 that is the subject of this review carries a sail inventory which includes a 125 square foot mainsail, 225 square foot 150% genoa, 160 square foot laper/jib and a 400 square foot symmetrical spinnaker. In wind conditions up to about 15mph - 18mph, the main and genoa move the boat along nicely.

The 25 - Centerboard and fixed ballast, good head room only if you get the Pop-up model and use it while anchored. Both are great boats but have very different characteristics.
The Helms 25 is equipped with a centerboard keel. A centerboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.51 - 0.61 meter (1.67 - 1.97 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The Helms 25 is a 25.0ft masthead sloop designed by Jack A. Helms and built in fiberglass by Helms - Jack A. Helms Co. since 1974. The Helms 25 is a light sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a day-boat.
The owner (my boss) sold Cals, Newports, C&C's, Helms, Mirages and other great boats. I worked for the Sailing center for several years. The year after we raced a Mirage 28 it was not as successful as the Helm's. I rate it as the best 30 I sailed! The helms 25 is also a great boat. You will love everything about the helms 30.

Under PHRF a fin-keel 25 rates about 222 (shoal draft, 230 or so), letting it sail boat-for-boat with the Catalina 25 and the O'Day 25, two slightly higher priced but otherwise comparable boats in size and type. Windward performance is hurt by shrouds attached at the rail and by the heavy weather helm created as the 25 heels.

There are a few on the lake where I keep my Helms 30 and they seem to be a cut above the hunters, catalinas, etc... of the same era. My 30 seems to be a much higher build quality than similar boats and sails very well.

I recently purchased a '74 Helms 25 but it looks like in the 40 years since it's production one of the owners has possible redone the mast rigging, and the boom vang now leads to a traveler at the front of the cockpit.

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5
