Extra Yachts presents new 34.5m X115 Triplex model

Extra Yachts, a brand of Palumbo Superyachts , has lifted the wraps on a new 34.5m model called the X115 Triplex.

The semi-displacement yacht features a modular exterior by Palumbo Superyachts in collaboration with Francesco Guida, while Milan-based studio Hot Lab has taken care of the yacht’s interior.

Key to the design of the superyacht is the cockpit, which features two foldable balconies that extend over an area of 75 square metres and offers sunpads and a sofa. The area overlooks a hydraulic swim platform that can be lowered into the water for easy access.

Other smart design features include a 4.6-metre tender garage on the yacht’s lower deck starboard side, which frees up the bow to allow for a Jacuzzi and sunpads.

The tri-deck yacht comes in a choice of configurations that allows owners to choose between five or six cabins. The standard layout comprises a full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck, complete with a private balcony, wardrobe, vanity, study area and bathroom with double sinks. 

A further four guest cabins can be found below deck: two VIP cabins with double beds and two cabins with single beds, all with bathroom facilities.

Aft of the main deck is a lounge area with sofas and dining area for up to ten. Meanwhile, the upper deck plays host to a second formal dining area, also seating ten, which is cleverly positioned between the indoor and outdoor deck areas to provide a semi-enclosed open-air setting.

There is also a sundeck area that provides an alternative area for sun-soaking.

The yacht’s interior features “soft, embracing shapes”, according to the yard, alongside large windows that contribute to the light and airy onboard ambience.

The yacht will be built in GRP and carbon fibre with a draft of 2.2 metres and a beam of 7.75 metres. 

Triple Volvo Penta IPS engines deliver 1,000 horsepower each, making the yacht capable of reaching maximum speeds of 17.5 knots and cruising speeds of 12 knots.

On top of that, the yacht is fitted with two 2,600 hp MTU engines mated to waterjets. During the first sea trials, she hit 37 knots at full tilt and showcased “great stability and maneuverability,” according to Extra. The yard says she’s also quiet and comfortable below deck.

The cockpit layout has Extra’s unmistakable DNA, with a modern layout and large entertaining spaces. The aft galley is cleverly concealed behind a glass partition that can be lifted or lowered on demand. Elsewhere, there are four large cabins that can accommodate up to 10 seafarers.

Back upstairs, the 800-square-foot outdoor deck features collapsible balconies, a dedicated “lounge zone” with sun loungers and an extendable table that comfortably seat 12. On the starboard side, you’ll find a large garage holding a 13-foot Williams Sportjet tender. There are also two Jet Skis housed in the bow, alongside a hydraulic crane for hauling and launching toys.

Although it’s only been a couple of years since Extra entered the marine industry, the newcomer’s fleet now includes six models ranging from 76 to 130 feet. The yard also recently unveiled a new hybrid catamaran known as the X30 Villa that pairs the space of a superyacht with the efficiency of a multihull. The second X99 Fast will also be based in Miami and will join the first hull across the pond once complete.

The exterior design, by Francesco Guida, features a unique personality with unusual lines, impressive volumes, an innovative concept of use. The Extra X96 TRIPLEX has been conceived to meet the needs of anyone keen on entering the yachting world, enjoying full contact with nature and in a spirit of full conviviality with guests and family. 

The fly deck, featuring two areas dedicated to sunbathing and one furnished as living, offers the privileged advantage to fully enjoy cruising in total comfort and privacy even on the top deck. Penned by Hot Lab, the interiors are chic and contemporary. Materials, textures and colors have been studied in detail. The design is clean, simple yet refined.

Beautifully illuminated by floor-to-ceiling windows, all the spaces are bright and exquisitely connected to the outdoor areas. The upper deck is laid out as a large open-air living area thanks to the retractable windows able to create a single large space, in full contact with the sea. It has been furnished with a 12-seater dining table by Minotti.

On the main deck, the large living room with spectacular C-shaped sofa by Minotti and occasional armchairs is the ideal place to relax and socialize. Thanks to a maximum beam on 7.5 meters, the master cabin located on the main deck forward is the widest in the category of boats under 30 meters. Its design creates elegant and stylish feel using soft luxurious yet sober nuances.

Below deck, there are four guest cabins: two VIP cabins with double bed and two cabins with single beds, all with en-suite bathroom. No compromise on usable space: the area dedicated to guest cabins measures 56 square meters. Precious wood and leather, together with lacquered panels, create a pleasant play of contrasts on the surfaces. The highly technological helm station equipped with all the latest navigational instruments, gives excellent visibility and total control.

Irish survivor of yacht sinking is from family of adventurers who have known tragedy

The Irish crew member who survived this week’s superyacht tragedy in Sicily comes from a wealthy family of sporting mavericks with a long history of adventure pursuits.

Chief Stewardess Sasha Murray, 29, was one of 15 survivors when the Bayesian dramatically sank on Monday taking seven lives, including that of owner Mike Lynch and his 18‑year-old daughter, Hannah.

Ms Murray and her family have divulged no details of her lucky escape, during which she injured her leg.

Locals in Sligo were at first unaware she had been in Italy working on the vessel, but those who know the Murray family were not surprised to learn of Sasha Murray’s presence on the Bayesian superyacht . 

‘We were all water babies,’ a family friend told the Irish Mail on Sunday this weekend. ‘It is no surprise to me that Sasha ended up on the water. It ran right through the whole family.’

In fact, Ms Murray’s family on both sides are steeped in adventure sports and count scuba diving and water skiing champions in their ranks.

As a result, Ms Murray and her brother Killian grew up surrounded by adventure-seeking figureheads who appear to have inspired similar interests in the next generation.

But this adrenaline-fuelled lifestyle has also spawned a double tragedy for the extended Murray family.

On May 30, 1998, Ms Murray’s father Fionn was killed in an aircraft crash during an airborne treasure hunt.

Her maternal grandfather, Holger Schiller, who was piloting the light aeroplane, also perished in the accident at Sligo’s Cummeen Strand.

One witness, Michael Fletcher, who was walking on the beach, later described the aircraft’s final moments in an interview with the Sligo Champion newspaper: ‘As it came in closer it was clearly losing height.’

‘When it was directly above me I heard an almighty roar, like a tractor trying to start up and then, within a matter of seconds, it had nose-dived.’

‘There was very little I could do for the occupants. All I could do was say a prayer over them.’

Years later, in 2005, the family sued the US manufacturer and were awarded €550,000 in damages by the High Court.

Prior to his death, aged 33, Fionn Murray had been a champion racing driver. In a glittering career, he won every available title at the Formula Ford level and in 1990 took second place at the prestigious Brands Hatch Festival.

He left behind his wife Jessica and their two children. At the time Sasha was just three and her brother was one. Both children would go on to enjoy motor racing from an early age.

They were also schooled in sailing and water sports at the Sligo Yacht Club where their grandfather Kevin Murray – Fionn’s father – was a renowned figure. Kevin was a well-known businessman in Sligo and the majority owner of Brooks Hanley builders’ providers.

Originally from, Balgeeth, Kilmessan, Co. Meath, he lived in Strandhill Road, Sligo and had nine children – all of whom engaged in daring pursuits.

Kevin Murray kept a 50-foot, 270 horsepower motor cruiser called the MV Chumvi at the Sligo Yacht Club, and used it to assist in many search and rescue missions. 

During one daring rescue, which led to a bravery award, Kevin Murray, accompanied by his eldest son Alan, plucked stranded sailors from the rocks of the Black Rock lighthouse in stormy seas at considerable risk to themselves.

On another occasion in 1970, the MV Chumvi led the Asgard into port for the famous vessel’s first-ever visit to Sligo. Now on display in the National Museum at Collins Barracks, the Asgard played a key gun-running role in advance of the 1916 rising and later became Ireland’s first national sail training vessel. 

Kevin Murray was also a pilot, as was his wife, Peg, and local newspapers dubbed the family the ‘Flying Murrays’ in headlines.

Kevin Murray was also a motor sport champion and water skiing fanatic and one of the founders of the Sligo Waterski Club.

He built his racing cars – the Murray’s Mercury series – himself, and was a four-time winner of the Hewison Trophy, the longest-running motor race in Ireland.

During the blizzards of 1947, he used a US army truck, purchased after the war, as a snow plough to help ESB restore power and distribute food supplies receiving council tributes for this work. Kevin died in 2000 aged 91, two years after the accident that claimed the life of his son, Fionn. 

Sasha’s mother Jessica Schiller was also a racing fanatic and worked as a mechanic for Fionn Murray’s team. Jessica’s parents, Holger and Erika, are part of a German mining and granite dynasty from Weidenberg, Bavaria that dates back to 1890.

In the 1970s, Holger and Erika fell in love with Ireland during a holiday and bought Ardtarmon Castle, near Lissadell House in Sligo. Holger placed an ad in a local newspaper seeking a German-speaking architect to renovate the property. Today, Ardtarmon Castle is run by Erika and provides self-catering luxury accommodation to visitors.

It is also home to an estate agency called Schiller and Schiller, which is run by Bjorn, an uncle of Sasha.

In 1996, Bjorn won the Formula Ford 1600 ‘Star of Tomorrow’ championship in the Phoenix Park, with Fionn Murray as manager and Kevin Murray as the engine builder.

Two days before Monday’s yacht tragedy, Bjorn presented the Fionn Murray Memorial Trophy to the winner of an annual race held in his honour in Mondello.

MONZA, Italy (AP) — Lando Norris claimed he’s not feeling the pressure — no more than normal at least.

Norris secured a dominant victory at the Dutch Grand Prix last time out to continue to chip away at Max Verstappen’s lead at the top of the Formula One standings.

The McLaren driver moved to within 70 points of Verstappen with nine races remaining and much of the focus will be on how the title fight could develop at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.

“I don’t think of (the expectation) at all,” Norris said on Thursday. “There’s always pressure. I still get so nervous before qualifying, before the races I still get just as excited and just as nervous.

“I barely eat anything on Sundays, I struggle to drink anything on Sundays, just because I’m nervous and because of the pressure,” the 24-year-old Briton added. “But I think it’s how how you turn that into a positive thing, how do you not let it affect you in a bad way, how can you actually use it in a good way to help you focus on the correct things and so on.”

It was clear last weekend at Zandvoort that Norris’ team had the fastest car following McLaren’s latest upgrades. That points to what could be an increasingly competitive title fight with Verstappen in the last nine races of the season after the Dutch driver was far ahead of the rest in 2022 and 2023.

McLaren also cut the gap to Red Bull in the constructors’ championship to 30 points as the team chases its first title since 1998.

It was only a second ever win for Norris. The other victory was in Miami in May, and he has finished second four times since then.

Verstappen had never been beaten on his home track but Norris has been quick to temper enthusiasm about a reignited title race.

“Monza’s a very different track. It gives the team a good amount of confidence and always a little bit of a boost, but it doesn’t change your feeling,” Norris said. “We know we’ve been performing well the whole year since Miami, we’ve been doing a very good job and this was a weekend where everything just went perfectly.

“We’re pushing hard every weekend, of course our goal is to catch in both, especially from a constructors’ side it looks a lot more doable than the drivers’ side. But I’m doing my best, the team’s doing their best and that’s all we can hope for.”

Verstappen said last weekend that “something has been going on lately with the car” and that Red Bull needs to figure out how to combat twin problems of a lack of pace and higher-than-expected tire wear.

The three-time defending champion is now without a victory in five races, his longest winless run since 2020. But Verstappen appeared unfazed by his narrowing lead.

“Listen, I just do the best I can,” he said at Monza. “If I win it or not, it’s not going to change my life. Would I like to win it? Yes, of course.

“But it’s not in my hands with the performance of the car because I just try to do the best I can, try to give feedback, try to make it faster. If that’s going to be enough to the end of the year, I don’t know.”

History of Kalmykia

In ancient times, the territory of Kalmykia was inhabited by representatives of many tribes and nations (Cimmerians, Scythians, Sarmatians, Huns, Pechenegs, Polovtsy). This area was the center of one of the earliest state formations in Eastern Europe - Khazaria, which had a profound influence on the history of Europe and Asia.

In the 13th century, this territory came under the control of the Golden Horde. After the collapse of the Golden Horde, Nogai tribes roamed here. The ancestors of the Kalmyks were western Mongols (Oirat), who came from Dzungaria. In 1608-1609, they first took the oath of allegiance to the Russian tsar. From the middle of the 17th century, they began to populate the area between the Don and the Volga rivers and founded the Kalmyk Khanate.

The Kalmyk Khanate achieved its greatest power during the reign of Ayuka Khan (1669-1724). Ayuka Khan firmly defended the southern borders of Russia, fought against the Crimean and Kuban Tatars, Kazakhs, mountaineers of the North Caucasus.

During the reign of Khan Donduk-Dashi (1741-1761), the Russian imperial government began a policy of limiting the Khan’s power, Russian landowners and peasants began the colonization of Kalmyk land. Under these conditions, the idea of returning to the historical homeland (Dzungaria) spread among the Kalmyks. At that time, Dzungaria was under the rule of the Manchu Qing Dynasty.

January 5, 1771, the Kalmyks who lived along the left bank of the Volga began their journey to Central Asia. This migration became a national tragedy. More than 100,000 Kalmyks died in battles, from wounds, cold, hunger, diseases, etc. In October 1771, Catherine II abolished the Kalmyk Khanate.

The Kalmyks who remained in Russia continued to participate in the country’s wars against external enemies. They retained their Lamaist Buddhist religion and their semi-nomadic life. The word “kalmyk” in Turkish means “remnant” referring to those who stayed behind.

In 1920, the Kalmyk Autonomous Region was proclaimed. As a result of the Civil War, the Kalmyk nation was split. Don Kalmyks, who participated in the White movement, emigrated to Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, France and other countries. In 1935, the Kalmyk Autonomous Region was reorganized into the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

During the Second World War, in the summer of 1942, a significant part of Kalmykia was occupied by German troops. By January 1943, the Soviet army liberated the territory of the republic. In December 1943, the Kalmyks were deported to Siberia. It was a punishment for mass resistance to Soviet authorities and the fight against the Red Army.

The deportation became a national catastrophe. About 98,000 Kalmyks were deported and more than 40,000 died in exile in 1943-1950. The deportation of the Kalmyk people automatically led to the elimination of national autonomy. In 1944, the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ceased to exist. In 1956, the Kalmyks were rehabilitated. Kalmyk autonomy was restored in 1958 but not in its former borders.

In the early 1990s, the Kalmyks sought independence but abandoned their separatist intentions in 1994. February 20, 1992, the Supreme Soviet of the Kalmyk SSR adopted a resolution on renaming of the region to the Republic of Kalmykia. In 1993, the first President of Kalmykia was elected. In 2009, the 400th anniversary of voluntary entering of Kalmyk people into the Russian state was celebrated.

Kalmykia - Features

The region is located in the zones of steppes, semi-deserts and deserts. The length of the territory from north to south - 458 km, from west to east - 423 km.

The climate is continental. Summers are hot and very dry, winters are with little snow, sometimes very cold. The average January temperatures range from -7 to -12 degrees Celsius, the average July temperature are +23-26 degrees Celsius.

Kalmykia has the hottest summers in Russia, along with the Volgograd region. July 12, 2010, air warmed up to +45,4 degrees Celsius in the village of Utta - this is a record for the air temperature in Russia. The annual precipitation is 210-340 mm.

According to the 2010 census, the national composition of the population is the following: Kalmyks (57.4%), Russians (32.2%), Dargins (2.7%), Kazakhs (1.7%). The largest population center is the capital of the Republic of Kalmykia - Elista, which is home to over a third of the population of the region (104,400). In addition to Elista, there are only two more towns in the republic (Gorodovikovsk and Lagan), each with a population of about 10,000 people.

The economic potential of Kalmykia is underdeveloped. The most important part of the economy of the republic is its agro-industrial complex. The basis of the agricultural sector of Kalmykia is livestock (beef cattle, meat and fine-wooled sheep breeding). Due to the prevalence of zones of strong winds, the republic has significant wind energy resources.

Attractions of Kalmykia

Today, the culture of the Kalmykia Republic is connected primarily with the culture of the Kalmyk people - the only people in Europe who traditionally profess Buddhism.

Rich cultural and historical heritage of the region is represented by numerous archaeological sites. There are a lot of burial mounds made by various nomadic peoples. In general, there are more than 230 historical and cultural monuments, about 200,000 archaeological sites on the territory of Kalmykia.

The main attraction of Kalmykia is the city of Elista. The capital of the region impresses with its unusual Buddhist flavor and amazing buildings, among which the Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni stands out (the largest Buddhist temple in Europe).

The main natural attraction is Bolshoye Yashaltinskoe Lake - a large salt lake located in Yashaltinsky district, between the villages of Berezovskoye and Solyonoye. The area of the lake is about 40 square kilometers. It has a unique balneological potential.
