Pacific Sailing School RYA DAY SKIPPER COURSE
Suits those preparing to skipper their own cruising catamaran.
This program of courses is designed to teach you to be the “Skipper” or take charge and combines both theoretical and on- water education. The skipper is responsible for the safety of the yacht and all crew. These responsibilities include weather forecasting, victualling, engine maintenance, sail selection and vessel handling, passage planning, watch keeping, navigation and pilotage. The package varies depending on previous experience.

RYA Sailing courses we offer
Stepping into the world of sailing for the first time is exciting and exhilarating. The courses in the RYA Yachtmaster training scheme will help you learn to sail and build confidence, become a useful crew member and even learn how to skipper a sailing yacht and manage it’s crew.
Most courses can be taken either on your own or with friends and family, including children provided they meet our minimum age recommendations. There are also flexible options allowing you to do the course in one go or split over several days or weekends.
Our sail cruising courses can also help you progress to the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Certificates of Competence which are recognised by maritime authorities worldwide and can be commercially endorsed for professional skippers and crew.

Ahoy there, fellow landlubbers and sea enthusiasts alike! Last week, our family embarked on an unforgettable journey, trading our land legs for sea legs as we took on the RYA Competent Crew course. Picture this: a mother and her two energetic kids, all set to conquer the waves and become bona fide sailors. Spoiler alert: it was a mix of high seas adventure, hearty laughter, and a few, shall we say, “learning opportunities.”
Last weeks 7 day Coastal Skipper course to Percy Island. It took 4 days to get there and 2 days to get back. In my view Percy Island is a hidden paradise and certainly a bucket list item. N

Known to be one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet, the Clipper Race welcomes people from diverse walks of life from all around the world to become ocean racing sailors. Battling through the most extreme conditions, and facing whatever Mother Nature throws their way, it is a true test of determination to the finish line. Crew can either take on the challenge of the full 40,000nm circumnavigation or choose one or multiple legs of the epic adventure. Airlie Beach will feature on the fourth stage of the event's circumnavigation which starts from Portsmouth, UK on 3 September 2023. After visiting Puerto Sherry, Spain, Punta Del Este, Uruguay and Cape Town, South Africa, the fleet will head to Australia. Making their first stop in Fremantle, teams will then travel to Newcastle, New South Wales before heading upwards to make their final Australian stop in Airlie Beach. Here they will enjoy the crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery of The Whitsunday Islands and enjoy the rest and recuperation before the next Leg begins. Joscelyn O'Keefe, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Host Port, Coral Sea Marina Resort said "Following the positive economic impact of its previous visits, we are delighted to once again be Host Port for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. This popular, 1-day course provides an introduction to sail cruising for novices. By the end of the course you will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and be aware of safety onboard.
RYA Start Yachting (2-days)

This 2-day course provides a short, live-aboard introduction to sail cruising for novices. By the end of the course you will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and be aware of safety on board.
RYA Competent Crew (5-days OR 3 weekends)

A hands-on course designed to teach practical skippering and seamanship techniques that will cement the learnings from the compulsory prior theory course: RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship or RYA Day Skipper.
RYA Coastal Skipper
Skippering a yacht on coastal and offshore passages demands strong navigation, seamanship and leadership skills. The coastal skipper practical course prepares those with previous skippering experience to undertake longer voyages.
RYA Coastal Skipper Theory Online or in Classroom
This is an intensive course covering advanced coastal navigation techniques including – position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge and use of charts and other navigational publications and the correct, safe use of the GPS.
Bareboat Charter
This one-day, nil experience required course will have you on your way to the most enjoyable sailing holiday imaginable. You will gain knowledge to safely and competently charter your own desired yacht by providing practice picking up moorings, planning your trip, advice on what to expect and what to pack and take.

The RYA Ocean Yachtmaster theory course is for those who have a passion for sailing and navigation. It is a wonderful course that will keep you occupied for hours on end.
RYA Yachtmaster – Preparation and Exam
To attain the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore candidates must pass a practical examination of their skippering ability. A Yachtmaster is capable of skippering the yacht on extended offshore passages by day or night.

Re-live the romance and adventure of traditional sailing on a modern ship. You can do as much or as little work as you like. Either jump in and haul on ropes to hoist the sails, grab the wheel and – with the skipper’s permission and supervision – guide the big ship, or sit back, enjoy a drink and watch the world sail by.
2024 Moreton Bay Day Sail, Saturday 7 September, 10am – 4 pm
Sit back and enjoy the Southern part of Moreton bay.
South Passage is a 100ft gaff-rigged schooner built with advantages of modern technology merged with the spirit and romance of traditional sailing.
You can do as much or as little work as you like. Either jump in and haul on ropes to hoist the sails, grab the wheel and – with the skipper’s permission and supervision – guide the big ship around the bay, or sit back, enjoy a drink and watch the world sail by. Weather permitting, we should even be able to stop for a swim.

RYA Day Skipper
The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Day Skipper course is the gateway to mastering the art of sailing and becoming a confident and capable skipper. This course is designed for aspiring sailors who wish to elevate their expertise in yacht handling, navigation, and overall seamanship. Get ready to set sail on a transformative journey towards becoming a skilled and certified Day Skipper.

By the end of this course, the successful Day Skipper will feel confident to undertake shorter passages over a 24-hour period in familiar waterss. Successful completion means that you can charter a yacht worldwide with confidence.
The RYA Day Skipper and Bare Boat practical course is designed to teach you essential practical skippering and sailing techniques. Completion of this course gives you an internationally recognized qualification for bare boat chartering.
In this course, you will navigate and take control of a yacht on a short passage under the guidance of a highly qualified instructor to ensure that your first, perhaps hesitant, steps as a skipper are taken in safety.
As a skipper you must be completely responsible for the management of a yacht. Thus, the syllabus of this course also includes chartwork, electronic navigation, meteorology, basic engine checks, passage planning, preparing the yacht for sea, and rules of the road. In addition, night sailing is undertaken to give you a taste of pilotage in the dark. Completing this course will also prepare you for obtaining the International Certificate of Competence ( ICC ), which is essential for skippers navigating foreign waters, particularly in Europe.

Living onboard throughout the course, each night is spent in a new place, allowing you to experience the delights of a real cruise. You will visit many of the quiet bays, anchorages and yacht harbour’s of Moreton Bay, Southeast corner of Queensland or the Whitsundays (depending on chosen course) and in the evenings there is time to relax and reflect on the events of the day.
Whether you prefer the stability and spaciousness of a catamaran or the traditional experience of a monohull, our RYA Day Skipper course offers options to suit your sailing style. SLEEPING & EATING
Accommodation: HAVE YOUR OWN SPACE AS STANDARD OPTION! We are the only company in Queensland providing your own space to sleep as standard. You do not have to pay extra for the no “no snuggling with strangers option”. No more cramming into the berth with a stranger, you will have your own space to sleep. Examples of your own space would be single bunks, or on the saloon bed.
DO YOU WANT YOUR OWN CABIN? We have that as an option as well. If you want to save some money, share a private cabin with a partner or friend.
Food and Dietary
Food is included in the price of the course, aside from one evening meal ashore at a local yacht club or restaurant. We will accommodate your dietary preferences including gluten free, vegan/vegetarian, lactose free, etc. You will receive a link to nominate your dietary preferences shortly after booking in for the course.

Adult Learn to Sail Courses
The learn to sail courses offered are ‘start sailing’..
Start Sailing provides a safe & enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing for beginners. Participants will have fun on the water and at the same time acquire the necessary skills to be responsible and competent in a boat.
The course includes an introduction to boat handling skills & essential safety knowledge that will allow participants the freedom of sailing small boats with guidance from an instructor or coach.
These class acts as a platform to more advanced training courses or alternatively, once you have completed Start Sailing 2 you should be ready to join our Sailing Club straight away!
Adult courses are held over a single weekend from 9am to 4pm. The courses are run in 14ft Vagabond dinghies and a safety boat is always on hand to ensure safety.

FAQ’s
What age is this course suitable for? Adult courses are for anyone 14 years of age or over.
What is a Vagabond dinghy? A small, light boat that you generally rig ashore and launch every time you go sailing. They are big enough that there will be two kids to a boat learning to sail as a team. They are great fun to sail with an immediate response. However, there are some conditions where you will need to be quick and agile to balance the boat. If you don’t mind ending up in the water occasionally, dinghies might be just the thing for you.
What is the Course Syllabus? Basic boat handling skills Safety equipment and clothing Rigging & preparing a boat Ropework and basic knots Sailing techniques, tacking Rescue Procedures, towing Launching & recovery Sailing Theory, no go zone Wind aware, tides & currents
What happens in bad weather? If conditions are considered to be unsuitable for safety, a session will be called off before or during that session. If the session is called off beforehand it will be rescheduled to a later date.
What do I bring? Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, bathing suit, a warm jumper, shoes that can get wet, a water bottle, a change of clothes (minimal wardrobe needed) and a spray jacket. Be sure to pack this in a flexible soft bag. Please avoid bringing valuables.
What about meals? For weekend courses, our Restaurant and Bar is open for lunch and drinks after the sailing. Students are provided with a discount voucher to use at the Restaurant.
How do I sign up? Follow the link at the top of this page. Once you have signed up we will contact to arrange payment. Payment can be made via credit card in person or over the phone or via bank transfer.
Where do I start? Queensland Cruising Yacht Club is located in Sinbad Street, Shorncliffe on the banks of Cabbage Tree Creek. Dinghy courses operate out of the Training Shed. As you enter the Club through the pedestrian gates, turn right and you will find the green shed at the far end of the site.
What happens if we can’t get to every lesson? Whilst there are no refunds for missed lessons, our Instructors will try and ensure everyone reaches the end of the course. If required a ‘make-up’ lesson may be arranged at the end of the course.

At Marlin Marina and Ellis Beach, the club offers a variety of facilities, including two clubhouses, training amenities, a scenic beachfront lease, along with three keelboats (J24 and Masrm 720), 32 dinghies (Optimist, Pacer, Laser, Quest), two catamarans (Nacra 350), three power boats (rescue), and eight outrigger canoes. Over the years, the club has fostered a vibrant sailing community through a diverse range of events, training programs, social activities, and quality boating facilities.
One of the club's long-standing traditions is Wednesday Afternoon Go Sailing (WAGS), which has been a vital part of getting the community out on the water for over 40 years. It is estimated that since its inception, WAGS has provided memorable experiences on Trinity Inlet for over 28,000 people.
For keelboat enthusiasts, the club organises races every fortnight, catering for sailors of all skill levels. With the support of Australian Sailing, the club offers a range of keelboat crewing, helming, and skippering courses, enabling members to improve their sailing skills.
Dinghy sailing is another highlight at CYC, with the club holding off the beach races and regattas at a picturesque beachfront location at Ellis Beach. The facility offers camping opportunities to support multi-day regattas. Training programs in Australian Sailing Start Sailing 1 and 2 are offered to enthusiasts looking to expand their dinghy sailing skills.
The club is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of sailors through its Junior Sailing programs, which include Australian Sailing Tackers 1 and 2 (7 – 12 years old) and Youth Sailing (12 – 17 years old, Australian Sailing's Out There Sailing curriculum). Through an eight-week learn to sail after school program, the club participates in the Clontarf program, promoting healthy relationships and building self-esteem and confidence in young Indigenous men.
In 2023, CYC launched SheSails, a program aimed at empowering women in sailing. Since its inception, SheSails has made a significant impact, with over 400 women participating in land-based and on-water training and social events. In particular, SheSails has been instrumental in cultivating female talent in sailing, having supported the development of 2 female Australian sailing instructors and 2 female sailing mentors.
