First look: Wally 101 – all-carbon flier

The new Wally 101 will be hitting the Med maxi circuit this summer and is built with racing in mind for a keen racer owner

Product Overview

Full custom yachts don’t come much fleeter than the Wally 101, an all-carbon flier from Wally, which is based on the famous Wallycento box rule.

The Wally 101 will displace around 56 tonnes when finally delivered this spring, 40% of which is ballast – not bad for a 101ft yacht! The hull itself is a sandwich construction in pre-preg carbon fibre and was joined to the deck last autumn.

The boat was recently painted snow white and sea trials will follow shortly.

Like most Wally yachts, the Wally 101 will include Magic Trim and Magic Traveller systems for easy short-handed sail handling using hydraulic cylinders hidden inside the hull. The owner is a Wally veteran and loves to race, so the rig is designed for power. There’s a 110% genoa and square-top mainsail supplying 630m2 of canvas upwind, and the yacht should be capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots. A hydraulic lifting keel optimises upwind performance, while the propeller and shaft retract into the hull to reduce drag.

That said, there’s plenty of entertaining space aboard. The central cockpit has a table for eight, sunbeds surround the scooped aft deck, and the saloon has seating and dining for up to 12. There are three guest and two crew cabins.

The lifting keel increases the draft from 4.70m to an extraordinary 6.80m, for unparalleled upwind performance.   The new wally101 Full Custom can easily reach high performance at all speeds and in all configurations.  When not sailing, the 425hp engine will provide a top speed of 11.5 knots.   This cruiser racer combines a high-performance platform with a family-friendly exterior and interior layout. The yacht’s deck plan features an amidships cockpit with a table seating up to eight and an aft sunbathing area for ultimate relaxation. The owner’s cabin has an ensuite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. Two further ensuite cabins complete the guest accommodation for six, and the saloon includes a living and dining area with seating for up to 10-12. The service area is comprised of a crew mess, laundry, galley and two ensuite cabins for four crew.

The First wally101 Full Custom Has Launched

Wally has launched the wally101 Full Custom, a yacht inspired by the Wallycento box-rule design.  

“Following Baron D , Nahita and the Wally 144 Full Custom of the last few years, this is the 48th full-carbon sailing superyacht built by Wally, continuing the company’s remarkable contribution to the advancement of sailing design and technology,” Stefano de Vivo, Wally managing director, stated in a press release. “Launching a fully custom 101-footer is a great milestone for us, which demonstrates once again the ability of Wally and Ferretti Group to always place themselves at the forefront, even in the competitive market of sailing superyachts.”

According to the builder, the yacht displaces 55 tons, almost 15 percent less than similar-size yachts. Carbon-fiber technology, including a high-tech sandwich composite with pre-preg carbon fiber, helps to keep weight down.

Naval architecture is by judel/vrolijk & co., with exterior and interior design by Wally and Studio Santa Maria Magnolfi.

Features include the Wally Enhanced Hydraulic System, which has multiple hydraulic pumps to speed up sail handling.

How fast will the wally101 Full Custom go? According to Wally, under sail, the boat can “easily reach high performance.” Under power with the 425-horsepower engine, top speed is reportedly 11.5 knots.

Wally 101 : Insight into the construction of a superyacht

Today, we treat the masters of classic wooden boatbuilding, their architects and craftsmen with respect, even devotion. They once elevated yacht building to an art form. Their heyday ended when, with the help of modern plastics, endless series production from the mould began. With carbon fibre as a material, boatbuilding approached a new, spectacular level of boatbuilding sophistication with technically complex individual structures. It is not only the finished product that is of interest here, but also its creation. A current example of this is the construction of a Wally 101, which is currently being built at the Performance Boats shipyard in Forlì near Ravenna on the Adriatic. The number 101 stands for the length of the ship in feet (30.80 metres). Delivery of the 48th carbon fibre sailing yacht from Wally is planned for spring 2023.

This is the fourth Wally yacht for the German client. It replaces a Wally 100, which was extremely successful on the regatta course but is now twelve years old. After three designs from the Argentinean-Italian design studio of Germán Frers, the owner is relying for the first time on the Dutch, Germany-based Rolf Vrolijk, a proven regatta specialist.

Ten years of development in design and material

Wally Yachts in Monaco, now under the umbrella of the Italian Ferretti shipyard group, has succeeded in asserting the minimalist design style of high-performance cruiser-racers developed by Wally founder Luca Bassani more than a quarter of a century ago and continuing to position Wally Yachts at the forefront of the evolution in yacht building against all imitators. The client of the new boat expects his new Wally 101 to offer the greatest possible comfort for his holiday cruises and a speed potential that will allow him to have a major say in the International Maxi Class regattas.

Although his new ship is only 30 centimetres longer than the old one, the two projects are very different. This is the result of ten more years of technical developments in design and materials. The Wally 101, with its planing, almost surfboard-flat hull, is almost a metre wider at 7.49 metres, and the lift keel, with a draught of 6.80 metres in regatta mode, is an impressive 1.40 metres deeper than the Wally 100, which is an important factor when sailing downwind. In terms of the data that is particularly important for performance under sail, the new model scores points with an upwind sail area of 630 square metres, compared to 521 square metres for its predecessor. The new boat also has a clear advantage in terms of weight savings, now 56.4 tonnes compared to 68 tonnes. Modern design and technology provide considerably more space below deck, with superior sailing performance.

The minimalist Wally DNA is the link

When Wally Yachts unveiled its iconic 24-metre "Genie of the Lamp" as a push-button automated day cruiser in 1995, it was hard to imagine what the Wally team would be working on in the future. In fact, the developments from almost three decades of high-tech boat building are not visually recognisable at first glance. However, they all share the typical minimalist Wally DNA.

Its inventor Luca Bassani on the question of what so many years of evolution in yacht building have brought to his boats: "The fuller lines, with the greatest width in the stern area, and a lighter hull structure enable our yachts to have greater volume and more performance. Advanced materials such as prepreg carbon fabrics, high-tech fibres for the standing and running rigging and lightweight titanium for the fittings make the yachts stiffer, lighter and more reliable. This also applies to the electronic equipment and controls, which make all boats even safer and more comfortable. We continue to build yachts according to the motto 'fast and easy', but today our customers and their crews are much more involved in the development. Owners' experiences with previous Wallys are an invaluable source of knowledge for us. Their personal wishes and ideas for the external and internal layout play a much greater role in the planning process than was previously the case."

The Wally 101 as art in architecture

Performance Boats is one of a handful of shipyards worldwide that have experience with carbon fibre one-offs in the size and quality of maxi yachts. What leaves the yard here, as in the case of the Wally 101, after two years of work, is a 30.80 metre long piece of "tech art". The various stages of development in the realisation of the project can also be described as art in construction, of which the slatted structure as the basis for the negative shape of the hull is just one example: a work of art in itself.

In order to achieve an optimally smooth outer skin and minimise the need for filling, the sandwich laminate is laid in the mould, which is considerably more time-consuming than laying it on the upside-down positive mould. There is no need to worry about correct impregnation with resin in a negative mould. The epoxy resin of the prepregs, i.e. the laminate pre-impregnated with resin, which is cooled to minus 18 degrees Celsius before processing, reacts with heat and hardens in a 440 square metre oven at 85 degrees Celsius. The deck of the yacht is then created in the same way - in one piece. On 22 August 2022, 15 months after construction began, the hull and deck were married so that painting of the hull could begin soon after. Swan white is the colour of choice for the new build.

The boat builders are the best in the world

Finally, Luca Bassani has his say once again: "Our boat builders responsible for laminating have been with Wally since the very beginning. They are among the best in the world, and they have developed techniques to get the best out of the high-quality materials." As the finished Wally 101 is expected to weigh just 56.4 tonnes when suspended from the crane, this would make her around 20 percent lighter than similar yachts of a comparable length.

The new construction from the computers of the Judel/Vrolijk design office is a classic Wally hybrid: the window gallery on the hull reveals a comfortable interior, while the lines of the hull and the sporty rigging package promise dominance on the regatta course. The work of art can be experienced next spring, but before that we will take a look at the interior - which we will also show here on yacht.de!

Wally 101: the latest, very light jewel in the crown of Wally Yachts

Wally 101 is a sailing cruiser-racer, designed by Judel/Vrolijk & co. and Luca Bassani. Lightness was a driving factor of the whole project.

After the launch of a 145-footer last year, Wally has announced the sale of a 101-ft (30 meters) fully custom sailing yacht, named Wally 101 . Her owner has previously built three vessels with Wally, as he enjoys using his yachts for a combination of family cruising and racing on the Wally Class circuit and other regattas. This fourth yacht is inspired by the renown Wallycento boxrule design combining acer potential and comfortable cruising.

Judel/Vrolijk & co . has provided the yacht’s naval architecture alongside interior and exterior design from Wally’s design team, led by Luca Bassani .

_ Lightness was a target: the displacement of the fully-equipped superyacht is just 56,4 tons , almost 20% less than yachts of similar size and configuration, and with 40% of the total weight attributed to the keel .

This achievement is accomplished thanks to the latest carbon fiber technology pioneered and developed over the years by Wally Yachts, using an advanced sandwich composite with pre-preg carbon fiber.

The yacht will also feature the Wally Enhanced Hydraulic System comprising the double low- and high-pressure pump technology to further speed up sail handling. Lowering the keel increases the draft from 4.70m to an extraordinary 6.80m , for an amazing upwind performance. But there’s more: developed for the Wallycento superyachts 10 years ago to improve performance even further, the retractable propulsion drive shaft reduces the drag by 5% which roughly translates into a 10 second gain per each mile sailed. As a result, the yacht can reach 18/20 knots of speed in full cruising configuration , with only the main and jib sails and all the comfort that guest require. When not sailing, the 425hp engine will provide a predicted top speed of 11.5 knots.

The advanced High Modulus mast and boom and the EC6 rigging contribute to Wally 101 sailing potential. With a sail area of 630 square meters upwind , the sailing set-up includes a bowsprit, a 110% jib, and a square-top main sail with twin running backstays and a deflector. As with every Wally, she is equipped with Magic Trim , the hydraulic ram developed to integrate the Wally push-button sail handling system introduced in 1998, allowing handling of larger yachts with a reduced crew.

The new Wally 101 is a high-performance platform that has been arranged with a family-friendly layout for enjoyment both day and night.

As part of Wally’s innovations for easy sailing, this new 101-foot is also equipped with the Magic Traveler for the main sheet and the jib floating clew system with up/down and in/out clew position adjusted by hydraulic rams, both introduced with the Wallycento superyachts in the ever-continuing effort to improve the original Fast & Easy experience.

The new Wally 101 is a high-performance platform that has been arranged with a family-friendly layout for enjoyment both day and night. Her deck plan features a cockpit amidships with a table seating up to eight and an aft sunbathing area for ultimate relaxation. The owner’s cabin has an en-suite and TV room , while two further en-suite cabins complete the guest accommodation for six. The saloon includes a living and dining area with seating for up to 10- 12, and complete the layout there’s a crew mess, laundry, galley and two cabins (with heads) for four crew. The slim deckhouse features the central skylight , introduced in 2004 with the Wally80 design to fill the interiors with natural light while enhancing the Wally inside-outside living.

Wally teasers the new wally 101 feet sailing yacht.

The Wally 101 is a 31m semi-custom carbon fiber sailing yacht that is currently in the final design process. It features exterior design by Italian design studio Pininfarina and the Wally in-house team. Furthermore, the yacht’s naval architecture made the German engineering company Judel/Vrolijk & Co .

According to Wally, there will be a new Magic Keel and a new generation of hull shape.

“Following the original spirit of Wally, the 101 is a yacht offering tremendous comfort inside and outside combined with swift performance while being simple and easy to sail,” says Luca Bassani, founder of Wally

The Wally 101 has a large cockpit with dining table and coffe tables. At the stern is a sunbathing area. The complete space is 58,4 sqm – other 100 feet sailing yachts in the past have 34,5 sqm.

Interior Wally 101

The accommodation of the semi-custom yacht ranges from six to twelve guests and four to six crew members .

There are different layouts available: three cabins and three separate living zones as play room for children, office, gym et cetera, four cabins and two living areas or five cabins . The crew area is aft and includes the crew mess, two double cabins with en-suites, navigation, galley and laundrey. The crew has direct access to the helm stations.

The tender garage houses a boat up to four meters .

Moscow Boat Show is the largest project in Russia presenting all the best in the world of yachting.

The exhibition annually shows high level of attendance and has already proved as significant and noteworthy event in the world of yachts and boats. Every year new exhibitors join the list of participants, genuine “sharks” of yachting business, the quantity of visitors considerably increases and the exposition becomes more sated and diverse.

The best companies professionally involved into yachting and small navigation business – 180 exhibitors from 17 regions of the Russian Federation and 15 countries traditionally presented the best and the newest in the world of yachting at 2011 edition: from design and facilitation of vessels and up to cruising and training courses for beginning skippers. In 2011 the overall exhibit space comprised 18 000 sq m. More than 25 000 visitors came to the show.

This year the exposition space will increase up to 30 000 sq m and will be accommodated in 4 exhibition halls. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development. The organizers will try to arrange a genuine fiesta of water on land!

Quite a number of foreign exhibitors will participate in the show. Foreign companies show increasing interest to yachting business in Russia.

Moscow Boat Show provides the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!
