VICTORIA DEL MAR Yacht for Sale

The 2006 Delta VICTORIA DEL MAR, the largest 50-meter yacht in the world, showcases some amazing features and capabilities from America’s preeminent shipyard, Delta Marine. With 781 gross tons and an impressive 7,500 square feet of living space, VICTORIA DEL MAR boasts seven well-appointed staterooms, an on-deck dedicated gym, a garage, an elevator and so much more. The master stateroom is on the bridge deck with a private balcony and incredible views while the two VIP staterooms are on the main deck forward. She has state-of-the-art composite construction for long-term reliability and lower cost and still offers the blue water capability to cross oceans with her full displacement hull.

The Delta Design Group was responsible for her entire engineering package, including naval architecture and exterior styling. The yacht is equipped with Quantum Zero Speed stabilizers making her extremely comfortable at anchor and underway. Her preferred twin Caterpillar 3512 engines were rebuilt in 2018, and her ABS 15-year class special survey was completed in 2021. VICTORIA DEL MAR boasts an impressive charter history and is ideal for an owner seeking a yacht with unlimited charter potential.

VICTORIA DEL MAR’s contemporary interior showcases a mixture of light woods and cool color tones. Her visionary owner worked closely with Claudette Bonville Associates and chose to incorporate glass along with some stonework, bringing the aesthetic of the ocean indoors. The use of custom glasswork can be seen throughout the entire interior, including glass countertops in the guest bathrooms that add an element of drama and the striking blown glass chandelier situated above the dining table that measures over 8 feet in length and weighs more than 1,000 pounds. The superyacht is equipped with an all-decks elevator for ease of access and features a beautiful main staircase made of Anigre and Zebrawood. A full gym can be found on the main deck and is convertible to a massage or spa room if desired.

Entering the main salon, you will find a wet bar to port and a large buffet to starboard. The seating areas are nearly identical, with two couches, two coffee tables, four ottomans and four armchairs offering seating for a total of 14 guests. A TV is forward that drops down into a built-in cabinet when not in use. The 12-person formal dining table is forward, featuring a massive solid glass tabletop on a custom cantilever stainless steel base. The table is surrounded by built-in custom china, silver and stemware storage. VICTORIA DEL MAR’s skylounge is an exceptional space to relax, be it lounging on the comfortable couches in front of the large-screen TV or enjoying a cocktail on the port and starboard veranda balconies.

Seven elegant staterooms welcome 14 guests for private use or 12 for charter service. Her king-size master suite is located on the bridge deck aft and offers a semi-private, full-beam air-conditioned aft deck space with removable windows, a full-service bar, a table with seating for eight and direct access to the sundeck and main deck aft. This unique space is perfect for a private meal or a meeting and offers guests their own private, quiet haven away from the noise of the rest of the yacht. The suite features 180-degree views, a writing desk/vanity and a seating area with a couch and chair. Two VIP staterooms with queen-size beds are forward on the main deck. Below deck, the yacht offers two queen staterooms and two twin staterooms, all outfitted with the same luxurious accompaniments as the master. Aft is the foyer where the elevator lands on this deck. Each of VICTORIA DEL MAR’s guest cabins includes private en-suite bathrooms. Including the Captain, up to 12 crewmembers can be accommodated onboard.

The superyacht’s exterior deck spaces are second to none. Her aft deck features sliding windows for wind and sun protection. There is a built-in settee aft, a table and seating for nine. A glass-enclosed spiral staircase leads up to the owner’s deck and sundeck levels. VICTORIA DEL MAR’s sundeck is centered around entertainment. The space is complete with an outdoor galley, a bar and a 100” HD cinema screen, creating the perfect alfresco cinema. Guests will enjoy the large Jacuzzi, abundance of sunpads and alfresco dining area. The yacht’s sundeck is complete with a full day head including a shower for added convenience. The hardtop offers shade when needed.

VICTORIA DEL MAR’s storage for tenders and toys is excellent. The yacht’s tender is conveniently stored in the float-in aft garage, while her foredeck houses Jet Skis and a bow crane for ease of launch. Her extensive toy list further contributes to her already-impressive charter capabilities.

Full Details

VICTORIA DEL MAR is an exceptionally spacious yacht with all the modern amenities needed for world-wide cruising. Her clean and minimalist interior was styled by Claudette Bonville Associates, who worked closely with the yacht’s owners to produce a fresh and comfortable onboard atmosphere. She has a beam of nearly 34 feet for a total of 7,500 square feet of living area, 781 gross tons, and 9’ draft with Quantum Zero Speed stabilizers, which makes her an extremely comfortable platform. The Delta Design Group was responsible for the entire engineering package, including naval architecture and exterior styling.

The decor is a mixture of light woods and cool color tones. In addition to stonework, the Owner has chosen to use the light airiness of glass to bring the look of the ocean inside. Featured in the guest heads are beautiful custom glass countertops that integrate the sinks with dramatic shapes and forms. The dining table is accentuated by a blown glass chandelier that measures more than 8 feet in length and weighs more than 1,000 pounds. Throughout the yacht are original artwork by Andy Warhol, Elsworth Kelly and Joan Miro. Her main deck offers an open layout with an inviting main salon featuring beautiful woodwork and décor that flows beautifully into a formal dining area that seats 12 guests under the blown-glass chandelier.

VICTORIA DEL MAR can accommodate up to 14 guests for private use (12 for charter service) in seven impressive staterooms. Her master stateroom is located on the bridge deck aft and boasts a semi-private, full-beam air-conditioned aft deck space, with removable windows, and direct access to the sundeck and main aft deck. Two VIP staterooms with queen-size beds are located on the main deck forward while, below deck, she offers two queen staterooms and two twin staterooms - all ensuite. A full gym located on the main deck can be converted to a massage or spa room. A beautiful main staircase of anigre and zebrawood offers access all four decks, as does the elevator.

VICTORIA DEL MAR’s skylounge is an exceptional space to relax. Sit back in the comfortable couches in front of the large-screen TV or enjoy cocktails at the bar and make use of the perfectly situated game table. The skylounge is flanked by private balconies, well suited for sightseeing, reading and more.

VICTORIA DEL MAR’s sundeck is designed for entertaining, complete with bar, outdoor galley, and 100” HD cinema screen. On of the most popular spots on the yacht, this area also offers a large Jacuzzi, sunpads and alfresco dining for up to 18 guests. For convenience, there is a day head and shower on this level. A lightweight carbon fiber, contemporary hardtop (supports the mast, radar and communication systems above) offers guests shade during the day if desired.

Equipped with preferred twin Caterpillar 3512 engines (rebuilt in 2018), VICTORIA DEL MAR has a cruising speed of 12-12.5 knots and a maximum speed of almost 14 knots. Carrying 21,800 US gallons of fuel gives her a range of over 5,000 nautical miles. The ABS 15-year special class survey was completed in spring 2021, and the yacht is LY3 compliant with Jamaican Registry.

VICTORIA DEL MAR is a rare combination of quality, pedigree, space, and features, packaged inside a composite hull and superstructure built by the finest shipyard in the US.

The aft main deck is entered via the passarelle on the starboard side or through boarding doors on port and starboard of the main deck. There are sliding windows on the port and starboard sides of the aft deck for wind and sun protection. On center is a built-in settee aft, table and seating for nine persons. This entire area is air conditioned keeping the temperature down even on the hottest of days. There is a spiral staircase enclosed in glass, which leads up through the owner’s deck and sundeck levels. This area can also be enclosed for inclement weather conditions.

You enter the main salon through two automatic sliding glass doors. Upon entering this area you have a wet bar to port and buffet to starboard. In the main area of the saloon to port and starboard are nearly identical seating areas with two couches, two coffee tables, four ottomans under the coffee tables and four chairs for seating 14 guests. Forward on center is a TV, when not in use the TV drops down into a built-in cabinet out of sight.

Forward of the salon is the dining area with a massive solid glass tabletop on top of a custom cantilever stainless steel base. The table comfortably seats twelve. Fitted into the port, starboard and center cabinets surrounding the dining area built-in custom china, silver, and stemware storage. The floors on the main deck are finished in maple.

Proceeding forward on starboard is the main deck foyer entrance and entrance point to the elevator servicing all four decks. Further forward on port side of this foyer is the main deck day head and stairs leading to the bridge deck level.

Beyond the foyer moving ahead is the main deck guest library, which then leads further forward into the twin main deck VIP cabins. Both VIP cabins are fitted with 8’ high coffered ceilings, walk-in closets, and a custom cabinet, which also houses the entertainment equipment. The heads offer full-size walk-in showers and single wash basins. Skylights are fitted into the coffered ceilings for an amazing amount of natural light. Huge windows in the hull give expansive views.

Just aft of the port VIP cabin is the gym, which converts into a massage room and has amazing views out the hull windows. The gym is fitted with free weights and larger pieces of equipment include a treadmill and stationary cycle.

Also on the main deck is the full-service galley fitted in stainless steel, a stewardess service pantry and forward of galley is the crew lounge/dinette. Also located in the crew mess is the very large walk-in cold storage and freezer. From the crew lounge, the crew go forward down a set of stairs which lead to the laundry room and crew cabins.

The lower deck consists of four guest cabins; the two aft both have standard size queen berths; ensuite heads, with very large bathtubs. Each of these cabins is very spacious with room for loose furnishings and massive amounts of storage. The two forward cabins each have twin berths and large ensuite heads with showers. Aft in the foyer is where the elevator lands on this deck. On the forward end of the foyer is the discreet, direct crew access for service, which also leads forward to the crew quarters and laundry.

Moving forward into the crew quarters from the guest area, on port are stairs leading up to the crew mess and lower deck laundry area. The laundry area is fully equipped with three full size machines, a sink and steam iron. Continuing forward to starboard is the engineer’s cabin with the lower bunk being a queen and an upper single berth. This cabin can either be for a couple or two crew. There is a full-size working desk in this cabin and ensuite bath. Moving forward there are four more cabins, each ensuite and with upper/lower berth configuration. In total, including the Captain, there is accommodation for up to 11/12 crew. The storage under the crew’s quarters is noteworthy as it is a massive area for provisions and dry storage that is well organized and easily accessible.

Owners Deck / Skylounge / Bridge Deck

Starting from the bridge deck foyer aft of the bridge, you can arrive here either via the elevator or stairwell to all decks. Moving aft to port is a day head for this deck level. The floors in the foyer and skylounge are finished in mahogany and holly. Forward from there you enter the very spacious bridge. The bridge is designed for both operating the yacht and for guest comfort. A huge wrap around u-shaped settee is raised for views out the pilot house windows with two tables. Outside the bridge on both port and starboard sides there are drop down control wing stations, which are positioned perfectly for close quarter maneuvering. On the port side aft of the pilot house is the ship’s office and further aft from here is the Captain’s cabin with ensuite head and excellent storage, including two very large hanging lockers.

Starting from the foyer on this deck level and going aft you enter the sky lounge through a set of custom glass doors. Portside is a full-service bar with fossilized wood top. Further forward is a game table; aft is a settee, coffee table and two chairs. A unique feature in this area are the verandas on both port and starboard, both with chairs and tables. The door to the verandas can also be left open, should one like to have fresh air with cross ventilation.

Aft of the skylounge is the massive Owner’s full beam suite, consisting of a bedroom, large his & her bathroom, and a private enclosed deck. Aside from the incredible privacy and space, the position of the Owner’s suite on bridge deck level means you are far from the noises created when the yacht is in operation, such as the bow thruster and anchor deployment. The king berth facing aft offers 180ᵒ views. To port there is a writing desk/vanity and on starboard is a sitting area with couch and chair for reading or relaxing. Two nice walk-in closets to either side provide ample, accessible storage. The owner’s head is beautifully finished with a large bathtub, separate shower, and double wash basins.

Further aft is the enclosed aft deck with full climate control, full-service bar, dinette table and multiple seating areas to relax in privacy or with some company for an intimate meal. A circular stairway that is enclosed with glass and a sliding door provides access to the sundeck or lower aft deck.

The sun deck has multiple access by the aft spiral staircase, the elevator, or internal stairs forward which lead up from the central staircase through all decks.

The sun deck is massive, offering plenty of space for sunning or shade. Moving from aft to forward there is a davit to port for storing wave runners on ocean crossings. Nearby is an 8 person Jacuzzi/hot tub and four chaise lounges. On center is a beautiful dining area which seats 18 guests. Under the hard top on port side is a day head complete with shower. Forward of the dining area is the elevator, which again services all decks. On the port side of the elevator is a full-service bar which faces both aft and forward. Further forward and to starboard is a wonderful built-in settee for intimate conversations.

The hard top covering this area is a true work of art. It has been engineered so there are no posts interfering with the view and built with hybrid composites. All the way forward on the sun deck is the staircase which leads down to the bridge deck main foyer.

Engine Room And Garage

The engine room is entered either via the swim platform or port side aft main deck.

The tender is located aft with a float-in garage. This garage has an amazing design, which keeps the tender and its operations completely out of the guest spaces. In addition, the tender can be launched and recovered in less than two minutes. When coastal cruising, the wave runners are stowed on the foredeck. For ocean passages they are stowed on the sun deck.

Victoria 30: a small boat with big ambitions

The Victoria 30 is a small boat with big ambitions: a pocket cruiser that’s fun to sail and pretty to boot. Is she Queen Victoria or just a pretender to the throne? Rachael Sprot finds out...

Product Overview

Victoria 30.

If you can measure the success of a boat by the strength of its owners’ associations, then Victoria yachts are right up there.

Their devoted following spans the Atlantic, and boasts an active Facebook page that Chuck Paine, the designer himself, keeps up to date.

On this side of the pond the Victoria 34 is highly regarded. It’s the training boat of choice for the Joint Services training centre which owns 15 of them.

However, the Victoria 30s are less well known and there were only 50 or so made.

I hadn’t heard of them until I was invited to sail Rowan a few months ago by owner Bennie Mallet, but it’s the kind of boat that once introduced, you won’t forget.

The Victoria 30 is hard to pigeonhole. The most distinctive feature is the canoe stern and attractive shear-line, but she isn’t your typical, old-fashioned ‘double-ender’.

Despite the eclectic mix of 1970s and 1980s cruising boats in Torpoint Marina where I jumped aboard, Rowan still caught my eye.

I couldn’t put my finger on it, but she was just different.

Bennie told me that she had a whole suite of racing sails which she’d inherited from the previous owner.

All 16 of them were sitting in her garage at home, including multiple spinnakers! I was even more perplexed.

Canoe sterns have a significant place in the history of ocean cruising boats. From the Vikings to Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Bernard Moitessier, many great sea voyages have been made in ‘double-enders,’ but I have to confess I associated them with Colin Archer’s heavily built Norwegian rescue ships, or the Nauticat motor-sailers.

Solid and seaworthy perhaps, but more of a survival pod than a sailing machine. Spoiler alert: I was wrong.

Aside from the canoe stern there are other features that make her stand out.

Rowan has a cutter rig, encapsulated keel , bowsprit, deep gunwales and a separate tri-sail track. There’s no messing about here, this boat means business.

There was a complex evolution behind the design. The Victoria 30 was originally built in the United States as the Leigh 30.

The Leigh in turn was based on the smaller Frances 26 which Paine had lovingly designed with his own, singlehanded sailing ambitions in mind.

Paine had fallen in love with the double-ended fishing boats he’d seen in Scotland in 1974 and promised himself that he’d try to replicate the design back home.

Thus the Frances was conceived, and it soon developed something of a cult following.

It was a natural progression to create a slightly bigger, family-sized version.

Small enough to be affordable, but rugged enough to withstand offshore conditions, there was one other important criterion: it needed to sail well.

So with its relatively small long-keel, substantial build quality, healthy sail area and generous ballast-ratio, the Leigh was born.

It was the editor of Yachting World at the time, Bernard Hayman, who persuaded Victoria Yachts in Southampton to bring the Leigh to the UK market.

Hayman spent many years perfecting his own small, offshore-cruiser, Barbican, and made pioneering voyages to the USSR and Norway in it.

So it seems that he and Paine shared many of the same values when it came to cruising boats: they needed to be bullet-proof, kind on the crew and a pleasure to sail.

Bennie bought Rowan in 2018 precisely for the Victoria 30’s offshore cruising credentials. She often sails it solo or with her daughter, Fiona.

She bought the boat in Ireland and sailed it to Plymouth, from where she cruises the English Channel.

Initially attracted to the Victoria 34s, which were slightly out of budget, she was delighted to discover their little sister and bought one straight away.

When I stepped aboard, I was immediately struck by how safe I felt. The raised coachroof is narrow with a solid teak handrail, allowing a decent side deck to move around on.

The cockpit was surprisingly spacious in port with the tiller up because it extends right out to the gunwales in the aft section, so there’s more space than you’d expect from a boat with a canoe stern.

The aft part of the cockpit is directly enclosed by the push-pit, making it very secure. Under the cockpit seats are two large lockers, one aft and one to port.

Further forward the coachroof ends quite short of the bow and the flush foredeck has room for a well-lashed dinghy or in Rowan ’s case, solar panels .

It’s a useful space for raising the anchor or setting up warps.

The cutter rig and wooden bowsprit were options rather than the default spec, so there are also standard sloop-rigged versions available with large overlapping genoas.

I’ve always preferred the cutter rig for sailing offshore though.

In stronger winds a staysail performs much better than a half-rolled genoa, though for coastal cruising the running backstays, which are a necessary accessory to the staysail, do create an extra level of faff when tacking.

The hull is solid GRP with a balsa-cored deck. Under each deck-fitting the balsa core is replaced with a plywood pad adding strength where it’s needed.

The GRP was laid to Lloyds’ specification, though Paine has commented that the resulting laminate was actually less substantial than the original Leigh hulls made by Morris Yachts in Maine.

The encapsulated keel was unique to the Victorias. The American-built Leigh had a bolt on lead keel instead but it was harder to get them cast in the UK so Victoria opted to encapsulate them.

Many ocean sailors prefer encapsulated keels anyway because it’s one less thing to worry about.

The companionway has an inbuilt GRP storm hatch which slides over the Perspex one in inclement weather. It’s another testament to the kind of voyages that this boat was designed for.

Although small boats are more vulnerable to down-flooding through hatches, due to the lower freeboard, it’s a shame you don’t always see this kind of belt and braces approach on larger yachts.

Below decks there’s enough solid teak and teak veneer to give it a warm, traditional feel.

A well-balanced helm and high ballast ratio make for a rewarding sail on the Victoria 30

The plastic laminate head-linings are easy to clean, keep things bright and have aged well. Timber strip planking lines the areas of bare hull and is a lovely touch.

There’s also plenty of stowage behind and under the seats. I particularly liked the saloon table which drops down from the main bulkhead to reveal the wine locker.

It’s a robust defence against the accusation that small boat sailing is glorified camping. The galley to port of the companionway is compact but well-equipped.

A small wet locker adjacent means you don’t drag soggy kit through the cabin. Forward of the saloon is the heads, which takes up the full width of the boat.

It’s a decent size with a large hanging locker behind the loo. Many of the interiors were customised, so the exact layout varies slightly from boat to boat.

Sleeping accommodation on the Victoria 30

The forepeak can be made into a very snug double berth. Credit: Richard Langdon

Officially there are seven berths on Rowan . The saloon seats are decent sea-berths and one pulls out to make a small double.

There’s also a pilot berth above the port side which provides useful stowage. There’s a decent quarter berth behind the nav station and a V-berth in the forepeak with an infill to make a double, but it’s pretty cramped for two.

There’s no doubt about it, there’s much less volume below decks than a modern boat of the same length.

But there’s still 6ft headroom in the saloon and several berths over 6ft long.

She compares well with other boats of the same era and there’s an economy of space which means that every inch is well used.

Somehow there’s room for an Eberspacher , calorifier and 150 litres of fresh water – the same tankage as you’d have on a Bavaria 30, a feat worthy of Mary Poppins’ carpet bag.

Under power she handled the tight turn out of Torpoint Marina well and, with the help of her substantial prop walk, turned around in almost a boat length.

Like most long-keeled boats, reverse is not her forte, but the nice thing about the canoe stern is that it’s much easier to wiggle your way backwards into a tight berth than with a broad transom.

It wasn’t until we put some canvas up that I really understood the Victoria 30’s appeal. In a blustery Plymouth Sound we hoisted the main to reef two and unfurled half the genoa.

She shot off and I’ll admit, I was a little taken aback. I’d only just recovered from the initial shock when I noticed a big gust barrelling towards us.

I braced myself for a fight on the helm but it never came, she just dug in and kept going. I was even more taken aback.

The Victoria 30 Rowan is ideal for medium-distance, short-handed sailing in challenging waters.

There was only one word for this: fun, the kind of fun you can only have when you trust the boat implicitly.

The reason she feels so trustworthy comes down to two factors: the helm is supremely well balanced, and her high ballast ratio makes her extremely stiff.

‘I really like that you can walk away from the helm for a few minutes,’ Bennie explained later. ‘It’s easier for me to take her out on my own.’

The rudder design was something Paine put considerable thought into. Its square bottom concentrates power lower down where it’s needed.

Her AVS is also impressive: a whopping 163° – better than a Contessa 32 or a Rival 34 . She’s no slouch in light airs either.

The saloon on the Victoria 30 has a 6ft headroom

The next day the wind had dropped to Force 3-4 and she easily hit 5 knots close-reaching with her fully battened main, staysail and genoa.

She pushed up towards 6 knots when we bore away to 110° apparent and if she’d had a clean bottom would have done more.

The wind instruments weren’t working, but we tacked through less than 90° without any effort at all.

In the lulls, her weight gave her enough oomph to power through the chop without stalling.

Though her keel is long, it’s not too long: the cut away forefoot means there’s less wetted surface area than there might be.

The Victoria 30 hold their value well, making them a good investment.

The Victoria 30 hold their value well, making them a good investment. Credit: Richard Langdon

I could see why the previous owners had invested in such an extensive sail wardrobe and raced her; the Victoria 30 is rewarding to sail.

That said, the cockpit is pretty tight for a racing crew: two’s company and three’s a crowd. The tiller takes up much of the space when down, so the wheel version would be better if sailing with friends and family.

These boats have generally aged well and hold their value. The usual things will wear out: teak decks and toe rails, and interior woodwork if it’s not looked after.

The sprit on Rowan was rotten on the inboard end, and Bennie has put big stainless backing plates underneath all the deck fittings after the bolts for the main halyard block ripped up through the deck.

It’s not a bad defects list for a boat that’s needed little maintenance in 40 years. I began to wonder what kind of voyages I’d do if I owned a Victoria 30.

She’s ideal for medium-distance, shorthanded sailing in challenging waters.

She’s a boat in which you can be self-sufficient and that will handle heavy weather well.

Her modest draught means you can get off the beaten track and if you ground her on an uncharted rock, with her long, encapsulated keel you’ve got a good chance of coming away unscathed.

I came back to her Viking heritage – she’d be perfect for a summer cruise around the Northern Isles, the Faroes and Iceland.

It’s the go-anywhere attitude that I like most about the Victoria 30. How many boats of this size have a separate tri-sail track? How many boats of any size have a tri-sail track?

The Victoria 30's The compact galley is well set up for a short-handed crew.

She’s the kind of boat where some of your daydreams can become a reality. The canoe stern was still troubling me though on what is otherwise a practical boat.

I’d heard the assertion that it ‘parts the waves’ in heavy weather but I was sceptical – Paine may be a legendary naval architect, but he’s not Moses.

I asked him what purpose it served. ‘I do not believe there is any practical advantage. Sailing is a pastime that is all about quality of life. There is nothing practical about using the wind to propel a boat at five knots [but]… there are some folks who just like the look of this shape, and if it only does a little harm, they will still love it.’

As you’ve probably guessed by now, I couldn’t agree more.

Expert opinion of the Victoria 30

Nick Vass B.Sc B.Ed HND FRINA MCMS DipMarSur YS, Marine Surveyor www.omega-yachtservices.co.uk

The Victoria 30 is a long-keel, canoe-stern yacht introduced in 1982, designed by American Chuck Paine, on the same lines as the flush-decked Francis 26 and the coach-roofed Victoria 26, which were based on his older American made Morris 26 and Morris Leigh 30 designs.

The Victoria 30 has a long keel moulded into the hull with encapsulated ballast. It is likely that the ballast is lead shot.

Encapsulated ballast has the advantage of not requiring keel bolts that can work loose and the keel won’t need to be re-bedded.

Lead has value and can be sold to pay for the responsible disposal of the yacht when it comes to the end of its working life.

Watch out for the plethora of teak on the decks of Victoria 30s as this can be expensive to replace when worn out or decayed.

A woman in red salopettes down below on a Victoria 30

Bernie bought Rowen to sail offshore. Credit: Richard Langdon

Most were fitted with Yanmar 2GM20 16-hp engines which were reliable and common.

The double-ender stern pinches the cockpit and makes access to the stern gland, gearbox and rudder post gland problematic, so make sure that these components have not been neglected.

The lack of transom makes fitting an emergency boarding ladder tricky as the banana shape means the very aft end is high out of the water.

Make sure you have a boarding ladder ready for emergencies such as a roll-up rope ladder Velcroed to the guardrail which can be grabbed and deployed from the water.

I have found leaking chainplates on Victoria 30s. Leaks can damage the elaborate hardwood interior joinery.

Ben Sutcliffe-Davies, Marine Surveyor and full member of the Yacht Brokers Designers & Surveyors Association (YDSA)

www.bensutcliffemarine.co.uk

Generally, the Victoria 30 was pretty well built, but having surveyed several over the last decade, there are a few issues to look out for which are rectifiable but costly.

I should also note that these issues haven’t been found on every Victoria 30 I have surveyed! Boats which were fitted with teak decks are now 35-plus years old and need careful inspection.

I’ve seen many with water ingress through the caulking which has become trapped under the timber decks and got into the balsa deck core, causing softening.

The keel is encapsulated and reported as lead. Generally there will be a lean mix of sand and cement to act as a packer around where the lead is laid into the keel void.

Only around 50 Victoria 30's were built in the UK

Only around 50 Victoria 30’s were built in the UK. Credit: Richard Langdon

I have seen some where, following a grounding, water has got inside affecting this lean mix. It is fixable over time in a warm workshop. The rudder is keel hung.

I have seen very high moisture in this shoe support area and several boats needed work to dry the area of laminate and address this problem.

I’ve surveyed one Victoria 30 where the bonding failed on the hull to deck arrangement near the chainplates and required work.

Several had genoa tracks which leaked through the side decks. Internally, be aware of the chain locker and drain, which is accessed from within the forepeak.

I have had a few where the plywood was quite soft at the base of the locker. Check the deck collar of the keel-stepped mast as water can inevitably get in.

Alternatives to the Victoria 30 to consider

Morgan giles 30.

Many Morgan Giles 30s were home finished by owners, so layouts vary. Credit: David Harding

Many Morgan Giles 30s were home finished by owners, so layouts vary. Credit: David Harding

The Morgan Giles 30 came from the chief designer at Morgan Giles yachts, Kenneth Collyer, and was initially designed for his personal use.

Francis Morgan Giles, who was still alive at the time, is reported to have said that ‘God made man so he could float on a piece of wood’.

So, the first boat was built out of timber but with the inevitable transition to GRP , it was used as plug for the moulds.

First built in Teignmouth, when the Morgan Giles yard closed in 1969 Somerset Plastics bought the moulds.

It produced 70 hulls between 1969 and 1996. The lines are gorgeous, with a gentle sheer and classy counter stern.

The MG30 has good seakeeping abilities and handles heavy weather well.

70 Morgan Giles 30s were built between 1969-1996.

70 Morgan Giles 30s were built between 1969-1996. Credit: David Harding

Proportionally she’s got quite a bit less sail area than the Victoria 30 but they have many similar qualities, including an encapsulated long keel and efficient, square-bottomed rudder.

First specced with 1.6T of lead ballast, most of them actually have 1.8T of cast iron instead.

The original layout is quite unusual, with the galley taking up the full port side of the saloon and a table and short bench seat opposite.

There are two quarter berths either side of the cockpit, a heads across the full width of the boat forwards of the mast and V berth forwards.

Nearly all of the MG30s were home-finished, so there are quite a few layout variations and the usual pitfalls for the enthusiastic amateur to watch out for.

They don’t tend to come up for sale very often due to the limited production run and because faithful owners tend to keep hold of them.

Owing to their age some of them are quite neglected when they come to market, and even the well-maintained ones will need investment as things like chain plates get to the age where they require pulling.

A thorough survey is essential. But, they don’t make ‘em like this any more, the lines are lovely so it’s worth snapping up a well-maintained one, or taking the trouble to restore one.

Halmatic 30

The Helmatic 30 came with a long cast iron bolt-on keel. Credit: Boy Aylott

Halmatic has a reputation for building solid, no-nonsense boats. It produced the hulls of lifeboats, work boats and Royal Navy Patrol boats.

But between the bulky grey bruisers a lot of very attractive yachts emerged from the company’s sheds at Portsmouth harbour.

The Halmatic 30 is one of them, as are most of the Camper and Nicholson designs.

The Halmatic 30 is the younger sibling to the Nicholson 32 and was designed to open up the offshore cruising market to those on a smaller budget.

Like many of these classic hull designs, it had a further evolution too and became the Barbican 30.

The long cast-iron keel makes her sea- kindly, though unlike the Victoria and the Morgan Giles 30, it is bolt-on rather than encapsulated.

The transom-hung rudder extends the wetted surface area, but there’s enough sail area to make up for it.

The interior fit out is more basic than the Victoria’s and they command a lower price as a result.

Unusually for a boat of this size and era, there are no quarter berths. Instead, the coachroof comes well aft, giving a generous saloon with 6ft headroom throughout.

Although this results in a small cockpit, the upside of the lack of quarter berths is two generous cockpit lockers.

Everything on a boat of this size is a compromise, and in our infinitely varied British climate, prioritising space below decks, rather than above it, might be a good compromise to make.

Frequently described as a ‘go-anywhere’ boat, the Halmatic 30 is still achieving its original mission: to prove that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get your hands on a serious offshore cruiser.

Elizabethan 30

A larger sail area means good sail performance in light airs on the Elizabethan 30

A larger sail area means good sail performance in light airs. Credit: David Harding

The only fin keeler in this selection, it seemed a shame to miss out this little gem.

Designed by David Thomas, the Elizabethan was originally designed as a RORC half-tonner so they’re a performance yacht with cruising capabilities, rather than the other way around.

David Thomas created some of the most successful cruiser-racers of the last 50 years including the Sigma 33 and 38, and British Steel Challenge 67s.

Like many of his other designs, the Elizabethan is robustly built and extremely seaworthy.

The layout below works well for cruising, though some boats were home finished with varying degrees of success.

The two full-length saloon berths make clever use of trotter boxes so as not to reduce the space in the galley or nav station; there’s a quarter berth to starboard and the usual V-berth forwards.

The cockpit is a good size with useful lockers, although to go up and down the companionway you’ll need to clamber straight across the traveller, which sits just outside the hatch.

There’s an active owners’ association which would be a good source of knowledge for those new to the boat or undertaking refits.

At almost 20% lighter than the Victoria 30 and sporting a larger sail area, they’ll be good in light airs and a whippet around the cans.

The real proof of the pudding is that Thomas kept one for himself and even came second in the Round the Island Race on her.

A versatile cruiser-racer which is often compared to the Contessa 32, but can be yours for a much lower price tag.

Russian opposition group report says it's identified another superyacht belonging to Vladimir Putin

  • A Russian military plant built Vladimir Putin a 71-meter superyacht, according to a new report.
  • The report was written by the Dossier Center, a Russian opposition group funded by an exiled oligarch.
  • Putin's rumored mistress often uses the yacht on vacation, according to the report.

Insider Today

Vladimir Putin's newest known superyacht is 71 meters long, cost an estimated $50 million to build, and can carry up to 28 people, according to a new report from Russian opposition group the Dossier Center.

The vessel, called the Victoria, is based in Sochi but in October docked at a Turkish port near Istanbul for repairs, according to ship tracking data cited in the report. Construction on the yacht began in 2005 at a Russian military facility that typically produces nuclear submarines, according to the report, citing unnamed sources close to Putin.

The Dossier Center, an investigative outlet funded by exiled petroleum oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky – by some estimates, once the richest man in Russia – last month revealed that Russia had accidentally doxed its own spies by uploading their addresses onto a public city hall website.

Officially, Putin takes a salary of about $140,000 a year and lives in a small Moscow apartment – but extensive reporting shows the dictator almost certainly controls numerous estates and a small flotilla of luxury yachts . While there's no official estimate of his net worth, observers have pegged it in the tens of billions of dollars.

After Russia invaded Ukraine last year, authorities seized a $700 million superyacht linked to Putin with six floors, two helipads, a swimming pool , a beauty salon, and gold-plated bathrooms.

Victoria is nowhere near as grand. It has just two master cabins, according to the Dossier Center's report. But it also has the distinction of being linked to former Russian gymnast Alina Kabaeva, rumored to be Putin's mistress and the father of his children.

Kabaeva's friend, another Russian gymnast and the choreography director of a gymnastics festival Kabaeva organizes, posted a photo of herself on social media with the yacht in the background. And an anonymous source told The Dossier Center that Kabaeva often vacations on the Victoria.

Spokespeople for the Russian president and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Two more superyachts discovered in Putin's possession

Investigators at the Dossier Centre, founded by Russian political exile Mikhail Khodorkovsky, have discovered two more superyachts used by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle, bringing the Russian dictator's fleet to 10 yachts.

Source: Dossier

Details: The newly revealed yachts are the 71-metre Victoria and the 38-metre Orion, an escort vessel.

Orion yacht

PHOTO: DOSSIER CENTRE

Victoria was built at the shipyards of Russia's Sevmash military plant together with the Graceful yacht. She is currently undergoing repairs at a Turkish shipyard that prepares ships for the navy of NATO member Türkiye.

The Victoria yacht has been described as the flagship of Putin's Black Sea flotilla. The Victoria left Russia's Sochi port on 21 October and docked west of the Istanbul shipyard two days later. The vessel moved to the docks on early 25 October, switched off its AIS transmitter and ceased to appear on the maps of relevant services.

Yacht Victoria in the Turkish port of Tuzla in November 2023

The investigators managed to see the yacht using a drone. A distinctive feature of the ship, the massive letter V, was captured.

F or reference: Early in Putin's second presidential term, the Sevmash military plant, building nuclear submarines, including the modern fourth-generation Yasen and Borey projects, was involved in yacht construction.

The two yachts of the A-1331 project were the only ones produced by the military shipyard. The first one was Victoria, the preparation of which began in 2005, followed by Graceful, the building of which started in 2006.

Graceful took 8 years to build, whereas Victoria was completed in 14 years.

The contract with Sevmash was concluded by businessman Sergey Maslov's company, Julesburg Corp, located in the British Virgin Islands.

Sevmash reported successful testing at the end of 2013. The Victoria was taken to Italy, but the ISA Yachts shipyard never started work, so the vessel was moved to Türkiye in 2015.

The Victoria was completed at the Turkish shipyard AES Yachts on 24 July 2019.

The Victoria can take 28 people on board, but reports indicate that there are usually 11-15 crew members and up to six passengers on the vessel. The cost of the ship, as stated in the 2019 customs declaration, amounts to US$50.1 million. The same document describes the main technical specifications of the yacht, including its design feature: there are two master suites on board. The Graceful boat has as many master suites, and the Russian president's residences always have two separate bedrooms: one for the master and one for the mistress, Dossier noted.

Yacht interior

The Victoria is stationed in Sochi and periodically reaches Cape Idokopas, where Putin's palace lies. The vessel switches off its AIS and disappears from the radar just before the cape.

The vessel left Sochi for Crimea in the summer of 2021. The 38.5-metre Orion boat accompanied the yacht on this journey. It was developed in 2009 in Viareggio, Italy.

The Dossier Centre spotted the Victoria in Sochi in a photo posted on the account of Natalia Belugina, a rhythmic gymnast and choreographer of the Alina festival, organised annually by Alina Kabaeva, another Russian gymnast and Putin's mistress. Belugina is a friend of the latter, and they occasionally travel together. A source familiar with the athlete told Dossier that Kabaeva and her family indeed use the boat.

Quote from Dossier: "Vladimir Putin was never photographed on the Victoria, so there is no direct documentary evidence that the yacht belongs to him. However, as with other Russian president's yachts, there is plenty of indirect evidence: a specially selected crew, the ship's route, passing close to the presidential palace, the nominal owner, and the unusual construction history."

Details: After the arrest of the Scheherazade yacht in Italy, the Victoria reportedly became the largest Putin-related yacht in the Black Sea.

The same " southern flotilla " includes:

The €30 million 54-metre yacht Chaika (formerly Sirius), the only vessel on the balance sheet of the Russian Presidential Affairs Directorate. Putin met with Alexander Lukashenko on board the Chaika in May 2021.

The 46-metre yacht Shellest worth about US$23.9 million. The Shellest serves as a sailing vessel to get to Putin's palace on Cape Idokopas and has been sailing between Russia's Sochi and Gelendzhik since November 2022.

Putin's flagship in the Baltic Sea is the Graceful. The " northern flotilla " also includes:

37-metre Aldoga, completed in Viareggio in 2009. The exact cost of the yacht is unknown; similar ships cost US$14-16 million.

32-metre Nega, built in 2013 by the UK company Princess Yachts, costing US$12.2 million.

a Brizo 46 model boat worth just under US$1.2 million, assigned to Graceful.

Yachts related to Putin

Background: In May 2022, reports emerged that the Italian authorities had ordered the arrest of the 140-metre superyacht Scheherazade, whose owner is believed to be Russian President Vladimir Putin, in the port of Marina di Carrara.
