Why: Choose a Mediterranean Yacht Charter?

Mediterranean yacht charter vacations are always by far and away the most popular summer location. You can read hundreds of our client endorsements here . Think the French Riviera, Monaco, Italy, Croatia, Sardinia, Spain and Greece. This is where most of the large crewed superyachts are concentrated and this is where also where you will find a huge variety of interesting places and cultures to experience. The Mediterranean (or Med’ for short) has everything. The area covers a large diversity of countries, cultures landscapes and experiences. Yet, the fantastic thing is that they are relatively close together, so you can create convenient and action packed itineraries very easily. On top of this, the yachting infrastructure in Europe is second to none so there are dozens of beautiful marinas filled with beautiful private superyachts and mega yachts that can be chartered as well as all the shops, restaurants, bars and conveniences that you could need. Because of its popularity the Mediterranean has an incredible choice of charter boats available to rent, both motor (power) yachts and sailing yachts, including the ever more widespread large luxury private superyacht charters.

How Much Does it Cost To Charter a Yacht in The Mediterranean?

Mediterranean yacht charter prices vary according to the size, style and age of the yacht. Our luxury superyacht charter yachts rent from 30,000 Euro to over 1,000,000 per week, plus expenses, in the form of an advanced provisioning allowance (APA). Conversely, smaller 'all inclusive' type vacations cost between Euro 15,000 to 50,000 per week. Timing & Weather: The Mediterranean Yachting Season

The Mediterranean yachting season generally runs from April to the end of October. During the height of the season, in July and August, the climate is warm and sunny and the winds tend to be light. While this is the high season for all tourism, you can still easily avoid onshore tourists while afloat. The weather can also be good during the shoulder seasons.

Tip: Shoulder Season Means Value & Choice

Another good time to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons from April-May and September-October. These periods fall each side of the main summer season when the temperatures are still comfortable. September, for instance, is an underrated time of the year because the weather is usually good (if not too hot) but the sea is at its maximum temperature which is ideal for swimming. At this time there is greater choice of berths and anchorages for your boating vacation and the onshore tourists are not present in their largest numbers.

What types of motor yachts can I rent in the French Riviera?

As one of the world’s foremost superyacht destinations, there is a superb selection of luxury crewed yachts for charter. Some of the most popular types of motor yachts include:

Superyachts

For those wishing to make the ultimate style status, a superyacht is the most exclusive way to cruise the French Riviera’s coastline. Moran Yacht & Ship specializes in arranging luxury yacht charters aboard the world’s most spectacular motor yachts. We have access to the best superyachts and mega yachts for charter. Contact our team today.

Expedition vessels

Expedition vessels are a popular choice for those seeking an enhanced selection of tenders, water toys, and helicopter facilities.

Multi-hull motor yacht

Multi-hull motor yachts, including catamarans, are an excellent choice for those seeking exceptional volume. The wide beam of a multi-hull vessel means that guests often benefit from oversized salons. Catamarans also often boast a shallower draft, meaning they can often access small marinas and coves. Many also boast trampolines at the front – a great spot for soaking up the sun!

Full displacement motor boats

Full displacement motor boats are great for leisurely cruising along the Cote d’Azur. These yachts often boast enhanced comfort levels due to their hulls that are designed to cut through the waves.

Planing sports yacht

Planing sports yachts are excellent for those who want to experience the thrill of cruising at high speed along the French Riviera coastline! Beat the traffic and travel in style from one exclusive destination to the next. Great for those who really want to maximize the number of ports of call in one itinerary.

When is the best time to enjoy a luxury yacht charter in the French Riviera?

The best time to enjoy a French Riviera yacht charter is during the summer months, which is the peak superyacht season in the Mediterranean. During the summer season, you can expect sun-drenched days, balmy temperatures, and warm seas, ideal for making the most of your private yacht’s many tenders and water toys. The shoulder season, spring and fall, are also wonderful cruising times, and a key benefit is fewer crowds.

Average air temperatures are:

Spring (March to May):

Daytime temperatures: 15 to 20 degrees Celsius (59 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit)

Nighttime temperatures: 10 to 15 degrees Celsius (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit)

Summer (June to August):

Daytime temperatures: 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit)

Nighttime temperatures: 18 to 23 degrees Celsius (64 to 73 degrees Fahrenheit)

Fall (September to November):

Daytime temperatures: 20 to 25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit)

Nighttime temperatures: 15 to 20 degrees Celsius (59 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit)

Winter (December to February):

Daytime temperatures: 10 to 15 degrees Celsius (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit)

Nighttime temperatures: 5 to 10 degrees Celsius (41 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit)

How much does it cost to rent a yacht on the French Riviera?

The cost of a crewed yacht charter on the French Riviera will depend largely on the size of the charter vessel, your cruising itinerary, and the time of year. Expect to pay a minimum of US$200,000 for a week aboard a luxury crewed motor yacht and in excess of 1 million for the world’s finest superyachts on the French Riviera. During the summer season, charter rates are at their highest, with more competitive rates during the spring, fall, and winter. If you are flexible on dates, it is also possible to secure highly competitive last-minute bookings. If you want to book a luxury yacht charter on the French Riviera, the charter brokers at Moran Yacht & Ship are standing by to assist you. Contact our team today.

What is the APA?

The APA, or Advanced Provisioning Allowance, is an additional fee paid on top of the base charter fee. The APA covers non-fixed costs, such as food, drink, fuel, and berthing costs. The APA is paid in advance of your yacht charter, and any remaining amounts are returned to you at the end of your charter. Your luxury yacht broker will estimate the cost of the APA in advance, and you will be provided with a breakdown of all expenses at the end of your charter.

What amenities can I expect on my private yacht charter?

Every yacht is unique, so amenities do vary from vessel to vessel. However, typical amenities on crewed luxury motor yachts in the French Riviera include:

  • Spacious salons – great for larger groups wanting plenty of space to entertain or even host a yacht party.
  • Movie theaters – popular with all; enjoy your favorite film with popcorn and treats prepared by the yacht’s crew.
  • Hot tubs – typically located on the aft or fore deck and the central hub of many yachts! Relax and rejuvenate with a handcrafted cocktail expertly created by your yacht’s crew.
  • Swimming pools  – many yachts include a heated pool, some with counter-flow currents, a great amenity for kids and fitness enthusiasts.
  • Fitness equipment  – expect state-of-the-art equipment, such as treadmills, bikes, elliptical machines, weights, and more. Larger yachts may also include a personal trainer to help you maintain your fitness regimen.
  • Spa treatment rooms – pamper yourself with restorative treatments tailored just for you. Many yachts include a sauna, steam room, and hammam, offering the ultimate wellness experience.
  • Beach clubs  – a superb destination for leisurely days on the water. Located aft, beach clubs will boast sun loungers, often a bar, and easy access to the water.
  • Tenders and water toys – these often include jet skis, Seabobs, kayaks, snorkeling gear, stand-up paddle boards, and inflatables, guaranteeing fun on the water.

Larger superyachts may also feature:

  • Touch-and-go helicopter facilities or landing pads providing seamless access to your yacht and the utmost convenience and privacy.
  • Diving centers, including trained scuba divers can take you to the best coral reefs and wrecks.
  • Additional cabins for your own personal staff, including personal assistants, nannies, and security.

No matter what amenities you desire aboard your luxury charter yacht, Moran Yacht & Ship can connect you with your ideal vessel. If you want to enjoy a French Riviera yacht charter aboard the world’s finest luxury yachts, contact our team today.

How many guests can I take on my French Riviera yacht charter?

Most charter yachts can take a maximum of 12 guests – even if cabin numbers enable a larger number of guests. This is due to maritime law and additional regulations that are required for a luxury yacht to carry more than 12 guests. However, there are some charter yachts that can accommodate more than 12 guests.

How many crew members will my French Riviera yacht rental have?

The number of crew members on your French Riviera yacht rental will be primarily determined by the vessel size, with large yachts having more crew than smaller-sized yachts. At the very least, you can expect a crew to include a captain along with several deckhands and stews/stewardesses.

What currency should I take?

France’s official currency is the Euro. Credit and debit cards are also widely accepted.

What's the best airport to fly into for a French Riviera superyacht charter?

The primary airport along the French Riviera is the Nice Cote d’Azur airport, which has commercial flights to multiple international destinations as well as a dedicated private jet terminal.

Other airports include:

  • Marseille Provence Airport
  • Aéroport du Golfe de Saint-Tropez (private flights only)
  • Cannes Mandelieu Airport (private flights only)
  • Toulon–Hyères Airport
  • Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport

When you charter a luxury yacht with Moran Yacht & Ship, your charter broker will advise on the best airport to fly into and provide assistance in arranging transportation to and from your yacht.

Feadship C concept yacht

Feadship announces 75m superyacht concept powered entirely by fuel cells

Dutch yard Feadship has announced a new, 75-metre concept known as C, with full details to be revealed at this year's Monaco Yacht Show . The superyacht has been designed by Studio de Voogt to commemorate Feadship's 75th Diamond Anniversary.

C is inspired by the design of a diamond and how its facets reflect and magnify light, which manifests in the use of glazing to "draw light deep into the yacht's interior". Her hull shape and fully electric propulsion system marks an evolution from the shipyard's concept Breathe, revealed in 2010 and the award-winning Savannah .

This concept is predicted to be "30 per cent more efficient than a typical 75-metre yacht" with dual shafts, propellers, and rudders, according to Feadship. The yacht will also follow on from Feadship's ground-breaking Project 821 by drawing 100 per cent of her power needs from fuel cells directly running on methanol and complimented by lithium-metal batteries.

Other "innovations" on board C are the partially enclosed lower deck sea lounge, to be used at anchor or underway, a beach club with sea-level dining, a duplex owner’s suite and an articulating crow’s nest rising from a private observation deck. A pair of infinity-edge hexagonal pools match the shapes of various seating areas and the atrium.

The new concept also follows on from an earlier concept, Pure, and the recently-delivered Ulysses with a fully digital command centre and navigation hub that includes "the latest in intelligent situational awareness technology with cameras and data fusion".

The yacht is expected to reach a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. Additional power for the hotel load will be generated passively by two pairs of wave-actuated fins that fold out from the hull aft of the anchors.

A French Polynesia yacht charter vacation offers a mesmerizing selection of things to see and do. Here is our small selection of some of the most outstanding:

Don't Miss:

  • The Pā'ōfa'i Gardens, Papeete, Tahiti : within easy walking distance of the port of Papeete, the Pā'ōfa'i Gardens stretch for around 4.5 hectares along the waterfront and host more than 400 trees and plants from all around the five archipelagos of French Polynesia.

Tiki Takaii, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands:  the ancient archaeological site of Mea'e Te l'Ipona is situated high above the Puama’u village, in the mountains of Hiva Oa and is home of the largest "tikis" (ancient, human-like religious stone sculptures) in French Polynesia.

Motu Tapu Lagoon, Bora Bora:  once the private beach of the Queen of Tahiti in 1827, Motu Tapu lagoon is crystal clear and turns a vivid blue as the water gets deeper. Surrounded by stunning views, this bay creates a vision of an idyllic desert island escape.

Marae Taputapuatea, Raiatea: a newly-listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, this famous temple is one of the most renowned temples in French Polynesia. With hundreds of ancient temples spread across these islands, some of them still buried in the jungle, there are many for you to explore.

Mount Aorai, Tahiti:  Aorai is the second highest peak in French Polynesia, after Orohena. Generating phenomenal views throughout the hike, this 9.5-mile walk is one to remember.

Tiputa Pass, Rangiroa: t he most famous dive site in French Polynesia. This is a dive you can repeatedly perform, day after day, and still, be astonished by what you may see each time. From great hammerhead sharks to manta rays and turtles, there is a huge variety of wild and wonderful marine life found here.

French Polynesia's vast scattering of islands means there is something to suit everyone; from adventure and wildlife enthusiasts to beachgoers and sun worshippers. The region is also ideal for diving enthusiasts, notably in the Society Islands and the Tuamotus islands, which provide some of the most memorable diving sites across the globe.

Particularly idyllic and charming, it is no surprise French Polynesia is also a top destination when it comes to weddings and honeymoons. The islands are like paradise on earth and provide the perfect backdrop to any romantic event.

French Polynesia has an incredibly rich culture and historic background which can be seen and felt as soon as you visit the region. The first people to observe Tahiti and French Polynesia’s other isolated islands migrated from Southeast Asia roughly 4,000 years ago. Today, many residents are descendants of the brave sailors who navigated their way here on wooden canoes stitched with natural fibers.

Tahitians have a mindset that revolves around a philosophy known as  aita pea pea , or ‘ not to worry .’ Many Tahitian traditions and oral legends date back to their Maohi ancestors, including the bamboo huts built with pandanus roofs they still live in and the colorful pareus they still wear.

As well as its beautiful islands and swathes of beaches, French Polynesia is also renowned for its artistry which includes weaving, woodcarving and tattooing. Each sacred tradition tells a colorful story about Tahitian life, love, and their enduring relationship with nature.

Music and dance are also a huge part of their culture and each performance displays passion and vitality which was once linked to all aspects of island life.

If you’re unsure about whether you want to book a motor yacht, a sailing yacht or a luxury catamaran for your South Pacific getaway, there are a few things you should consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in French Polynesia

Motor yacht charters  are a fantastic way to explore all that French Polynesia has to offer, and with the extra power that you get from the high-throttled engines, you can cover much greater distances in a shorter amount of time, allowing you to get the maximum out of your private super yacht charter.

From large superyachts to sleek smaller models, and everything in between, there is sure to be something to suit your needs.

Sailing Yacht Charters in French Polynesia

Snorkeling in shallow tropical water off the catamaran

If it’s a more tranquil and peaceful experience you’re looking for, then perhaps a  sailing yacht  might be the best fit; allowing you to relax and rejuvenate whilst soaking in the impeccable views. The dry season between May and October is the optimum time for cruising across this gleaming archipelago. While there is no shortage of clear skies and warm sunshine throughout the year; there are more events and festivals, less humidity, and greater availability of cruise dates during these times.

Catamarans  are also a prevalent choice in French Polynesia, offering more excellent stability, ample space and larger cabins, as well as being perfect for navigating the shallow waters and the famous picturesque lagoons that are found here.

There is a limited amount of vessels that are readily available in this region so if you are keen on renting a luxury yacht around these waters, we highly recommend you speak with a yacht charter broker who can advise you on which yachts will be available and when.

For convenience we have listed the average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in French Polynesia below;

  • For private motor yacht rentals in French Polynesia, prices can range from $45,000 to $826,483 per week, plus expenses
  • For luxury sailing yacht rentals in French Polynesia, prices alter from $56,000 to $254,136 weekly, plus expenses

Taxes and service fees are set at 5% of the gross charter rate, to be collected before each charter.

French Polynesia is a year-round cruising destination with temperatures ranging between 28 - 31 degrees. Although the most popular times to embark on a private superyacht vacation are usually during the peak summer months, there are many different elements to take into consideration before you go.

Tahiti and French Polynesia only have two seasons the wet season and the dry season. Between May and September is the most favorable for yacht charters as it is generally drier and the winds tend to be more predictable.

The best conditions for sailing can be found in the Iles sous le Vent (Leeward Islands) region which is home to prevailing winds coming from the east at a speed of between 15-20 knots and up to 25 knots.

Between November and April is the wet season with an average high temperature of 35 degrees and an average low of 29 degrees.

Island of Tahiti, French Polynesia

Most yacht charters begin in Tahiti, French Polynesia's largest island. Papeete , a port city on Tahiti, is the capital of French Polynesia and is a great starting point for those wanting to explore the surrounding islands.

Guests can embark on their superyacht at one of Tahiti's main Pacific hubs, Marina Taina or Papeete Port . Papeete is a city bustling with life, you will find that you are within walking distance of excellent dining and shopping facilities.

One of the largest urban centers in the South Pacific, Papatee itself is a gracious and elegant tropical city with tall palm trees and an abundance of flowers hugging the city. From here you can cruise to the nearby Mo'orea , Raiatea and the additional Society Islands .

Others may prefer to start their charter in the region of Raiatea on Thaiti island which is where another popular marina is located. You can fly to the international airport in Papeete and then catch a connecting flight to Raiatea (Uturoa Airport) with Air Tahiti.

Raiatea is the ideal location to begin your yacht charter venture thanks to its close proximity to Tahiti's sister island, Mo'orea. Only 17km away, this island explodes majestically out of the crystal clear ocean into vertical peaks and is surrounded by a wide, shallow lagoon. Home to two beautiful bays, Opunohu and Cook bay, you'll find that you will feel instantly relaxed and rejuvenated within the first 24 hours of your yacht charter experience. From here, head to Huahine , Taha'a and Bora Bora for more idyllic cruising.

Tahiti, French Polynesia's main yachting hub, offers 3 marinas:

  • Marina Taina, Tahiti - an attractive full-service marina that offers limited stern to dockage to superyachts with controlling depths of 4-15 meters.
  • Marina de Papeete - a highly recommended marina located in the heart of the city that can home yachts of less than 20 meters LOA
  • Port de Papeete - beautiful port, has great security and is recommended for larger superyachts with multiple crew members.

Marinas outside of Tahiti include:

  • Maikai Marina, Bora Bora - offers berthing for yachts up to 45m (150ft)

Serene anchorages trickle all around the tropical islands of French Polynesia, giving way to labyrinthine coves and perfectly scalloped bays that provide a thrilling experience for yacht charter guests. With dozens of delightful anchorages to choose from, you'll have no problems finding the perfect place to settle whether you're wanting to soak up the warm sunshine or make the most of your yacht rental's water toy box.

Here is a collection of our recommended anchorages across this region:

ATMs are easy to find on Tahiti and near airports but more challenging on other islands so it is advised to plan your cash well.

Tipping is not expected or standard practice in the country.  That said, you can certainly tip for good service and in those situations, 10% is the unspoken benchmark.

French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France, and French is the official language. However, Tahitian is widely spoken, particularly in the outer islands, as well as in other dialects. Not many people speak English outside of tourist establishments.

Avoid daytrippers around popular hotspots by arriving either first thing in the morning or late afternoon when they all head back to their resorts.

Romantic, charming and elegant, Tahiti is a popular and idyllic charter location thanks to its naturally made lagoons and passes which teem with abundant marine life and coral-fringed reef. Not only this but the island is steeped in beauty, indulgence and adventure, the atolls of Tahiti are primed for those wanting to explore in perfect privacy and it is here that one can completely relax, kick back and enjoy deserted sandy beaches.

Mo'orea

beautiful bay in Mo'orea, French Polynesia

You can't deny the natural beauty of Mo'orea island. One of the best places for snorkeling and diving, the island is home to some of the most incredible marine life. Those on a yacht charter vacation will get to embark on the most incredible experiences here from deep sea diving to swimming with humpback whales. From the months of July to November, humpback whales visit the waters around this island and can be seen on a regular basis, sometimes even inside the lagoon.

Thanks to the island's crystal clear waters, the ocean around this region is home to some of the best snorkeling spots in the entire French Polynesia.

The Marquesas

yachts anchored in French Polynesian island, Marquesas

North of Tahiti, the mystical islands of Marquesas are some of the most remote, yet accessible, islands in the world. If you're looking for a truly authentic island experience, you'll be able to find it here. The islands are known locally as ‘The Land of Men’ and are famous for their traditional Polynesia tattoos and artistry.  There are many local artisan markets in the main villages where you can find any unique and original gifts, from seed necklaces to carved bone earrings to giant wooden manta rays carved with traditional Polynesia designs.

The Marquesas is made up of two main islands: Nuku Hiva and Hiva Ova, both of which offer dramatic scenery and perfectly unique landscapes. Rich in history and culture, these islands are definitely worth visiting as they are simply unlike any other destination in the world.

From archaeological sites, picture-perfect beaches and superb snorkel spots, this island is the perfect place to go for a unique charter vacation. Be sure to visit Aveva Bay for a refreshing swim and soak in the impeccable views from Panorama de Tefareii.

a couple chatting with an agent booking a vacation

For yacht charters in French Polynesia, we strongly advise booking well in advance of your trip to ensure you get the perfect vessel for your chosen dates. We recommend booking at least 3 months ahead to give your broker the time to organize the ultimate charter experience.

If left too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced. It is also useful to book early in order to secure a date when everyone in your charter party is available as the longer you leave it, the more challenging this will be.

Your  yacht charter broker  will also need plenty of time to craft a personalized itinerary and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in the marinas.  Advance booking will allow your broker the optimum time to organize everything down to the last detail to ensure your yacht charter runs seamlessly.
