Last missing body from sunken superyacht near Sicily recovered

Divers have been operating inside the yacht for more than two days.

LONDON -- Divers in Italy have recovered the last missing passenger from the superyacht that sunk off the Sicilian coast, ABC News has learned.

Six bodies had been recovered by early Thursday morning but the body of the final missing passenger -- believed to be Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of the yacht's owner, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch – was located inside the yacht Friday.

The body is being taken from the pier to Palermo’s Rotoli cemetery for identification.

The list of victims, according to Italian news agency Adnkronos, includes Jonathan Bloomer, the president of Morgan Stanley International; his wife Anne Elizabeth; lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Nada; British entrepreneur and yacht owner Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hanna. The ship's cook, Recaldo Thomas, was found on Monday morning.

Mike Lynch's body was recovered from the yacht on Thursday.

Rescue teams had been facing a "very hard" operation to find those still missing after the superyacht sunk on Monday, a spokesperson for the onsite fire brigade teams told ABC News.

The vessel was lost early on Monday in stormy weather around half a mile from the fishing village of Porticello, close to the city of Palermo.

Divers had been operating inside the yacht for two days, Cari added. "But the job is very hard because there are large obstacles and [we] have to work in very narrow spaces."

"It's a long process and we can only operate in short spells," said Cari. Divers have to be rotated constantly, with each only able to stay underwater for around 12 minutes, he said.

Two Americans -- Christopher and Neda Morvillo -- were among the missing, ABC News confirmed on Tuesday.

Christopher Morvillo is a partner at law firm Clifford Chance and represented Lynch in his recent fraud case brought by Hewlett Packard. He is a former assistant United States attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Visiting Gerresheim: An afternoon with historical highlights

History and Italy fans, watch out!

Although geographically, but by no means socially remote, Gerresheim has only "recently" become part of Düsseldorf. In the 20th century, specifically in 1909, the town in the east was incorporated. A stroke of luck for the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital, Gerresheim impresses with its architecture and history alone, which dates back to the year 1000. At that time, the Frankish nobleman Gerricus - the namesake of the historic town center - ensured that women, men and children moved here by founding a convent. But people are said to have settled here as early as the Neolithic period! As you can see, Gerresheim is historically one of the most exciting districts in Düsseldorf - especially as there is much more to discover than can be summarized in this one text.

On the way to the district in the seventh borough, you will pass a historical point: since 1989, the witches' stone on the area between Dreherstrasse and Schönaustrasse has been a reminder that two women were burned at the stake after the last witch trial on the Lower Rhine. Gerresheim artist Gabriele Tefke created this monument in memory of Helena Curtens, who was only 14 years old at the time, and Agnes Olmanns, who died at 46.

If you want to discover the district, the best place to start is a few hundred meters further on at the square on Dreherstraße/Wallgraben. An information board conveniently shows you the way to Gerresheim's most important sights. If you still need to get something: There are two bakeries, a flower store, a kiosk and - for the end of the tour - a restaurant. From your current location, you can already spot the spire of the Catholic Basilica of St. Margareta. If you walk towards it via Neußer Tor street, you will pass the Gerresheim Citizens' Office on the right. The building is the former Katharinenberg convent, which existed until 1834 and served as accommodation and a place of work for Franciscan nuns. The old mayor's house, on the other hand, dates back to 1646: Back then, there were just 500 to 600 million people living in the world. Hard to imagine today, isn't it?

Gerricusplatz can definitely be described as the district's showpiece or parade ground. In the traffic-free town center, you will experience a Düsseldorf that doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the city - in a positive sense. Here you will find a courtyard that not only serves as the setting for the Christmas market, but with its brick and (often crooked and leaning) half-timbered houses really does invite you into a bygone era. Everything here seems more relaxed, calmer and focused on the essentials. It's as if everyday life has simply been left hanging in front of Gerresheim like a jacket on a coat rack, so that only serenity reigns in the district itself. The church completed in 1236, the aforementioned Basilica of St. Margareta, with its Romanesque collegiate building, certainly has an influence on this. In the basilica, you should definitely take a look at the Ottonian crucifix on the high altar, which is more than 1000 years old and is one of the oldest surviving high crosses in Europe. A little trivia fact: Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a leading FDP politician who is now also very present in the media, used to be chairwoman of the parish council of St. Margareta.

Leaving the church behind you, numerous benches under even more lime trees invite you to chat with your neighbors in spring, summer and autumn. Perhaps the conversation will even turn to the Heimatbrunnen, a fountain erected in 1973 as a gift from the city to mark Gerresheim's 1100th anniversary? It shows the history of the district in 15 depictions - particularly inviting for fans of historical events. The moated castle known as the "Quadenhof" is just a few meters away on the square. Now privately owned, the building, which was erected between 1423 and 1437, not only served to protect and defend Gerresheim in the Middle Ages. Members of the Düsseldorf School of Painting also used to set up their easels here to paint the castle on paper or canvas.

In addition to the beautiful Alter Markt just around the corner, where boules teams compete, a number of Art Nouveau houses also serve as a popular motif. They invite you to finally turn your dream of owning your own home into reality. Or to dream about how all the rooms from the hallway to the fitness room could be furnished until you win the lottery. Take a look at the dream homes in Dreifaltigkeitsstrasse, Ottostrasse and Hardenbergstrasse, knowing full well that they are private property. The "Villa Poggfred" at Heyestraße 92 is considered outstanding, and the house of the former works doctor of the Gerresheim glassworks, which is reminiscent of a medieval castle - more on this in a moment - is sure to delight architecture fans. You will also pass the Protestant Gustav Adolf Church, which was completed in 1878.

So, enough walking around for now! And now to the essential part of any excursion: the food! Another stroke of luck is that many Italians feel at home in Gerresheim, with one Italian restaurant after the next. From simple but highly delicious dishes to multi-decorated cuisine, you will find a huge selection in Gerresheim. Starting with the "Saltimbocca" not far from Guerricusplatz (Kölner Tor 40) and the "Barberia Italiana" (Heyestraße 1), many restaurants are located at the lower end of Heyestraße, around two kilometers from Guerricusplatz. In fact, so many descendants of former migrant workers run bars, ice cream parlors, pizzerias and stores here that the area in Süd-Gerresheim is also known as "Little Italy". For example, stop off at the "Trattoria Bistro Terranova" (Heyestraße 119) or treat yourself to a quattro stagioni at the "Pizzeria Malibu" (Heyestraße 114) or "La Ruota" (Bündingenstraße 1). The very traditional tratoria "Mama Lisi" (Nachtigallstraße 3) is an institution in Gerresheim. You can stock up on parmesan, pappardelle and all sorts of other fine dishes to take home at the delicatessen "Sapori del Sud" (Benderstraße 45) or "Il Punto Dolce" (Heyestraße 127). Incidentally, the aforementioned guest workers once came to Gerresheim because they worked here in the Gerresheim glassworks founded by Ferdinand Heye in 1864. The name of the district, as you can probably guess, goes back to the factory. At the end of the 19th century, it was the largest in the world! Back then, 1200 people worked day and night to produce glass. The factory was to be history by the end of 2005. A new residential area is being built on the site, where you might one day be looking for an apartment, despite all your enthusiasm for Gerresheim!

UK tycoon's daughter is seventh, final victim of Sicily yacht sinking

Divers searching a sunken superyacht off Sicily recovered the body of the teenage daughter of UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch Friday, the seventh and final victim of a tragedy in which the businessman also perished.

Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah had been among six passengers reported missing after the "Bayesian" went down off the north coast of the Italian island in a storm early on Monday morning.

After Hannah's body was brought ashore on Friday, her family issued a statement describing their "unspeakable grief".

"The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends," it said.

Search teams had recovered the bodies of four of Lynch's friends on Wednesday, and that of the entrepreneur himself on Thursday.

The body of a man believed to be the yacht's chef had been found a few hours after the sailing ship sank.

Lynch, 59, had invited friends and family onto the sailing boat to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case.

But the 56-metre (185-foot) British-flagged yacht was struck by a waterspout -- akin to a mini-tornado -- before dawn on Monday as it was anchored off Porticello, near Palermo.

It sank at around 04:30 am local time, according to management company Camper and Nicolsons, and now lies on the sea bed some 50 metres down.

- 'Heartbroken' -

Hannah had just finished her end-of-school exams and had a place to study English literature at Oxford University.

Friends described her as warm, loving and "charming and ferociously intelligent", according to one of the tributes issued by the family.

Lynch, once dubbed the British "Bill Gates", was "the most brilliant mind and (most) caring person I have ever known", said another.

The businessman had been acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

US lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at top law firm Clifford Chance who worked on the trial, also died in the sinking, along with his wife Neda.

Morvillo's firm Clifford Chance paid tribute to the couple, saying all were "heartbroken at the tragic passing... and still coming to terms with this terrible loss".

Italy's fire service said 27 divers had gone down to the submerged yacht each day, performing 123 dives overall in a search that also saw helicopters scour the area.

The bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were also found.

The Bloomer family said they were suffering "unimaginable grief" for a couple who had been together for five decades.

"Our only comfort is that they are still together now," the family said.

- 'Uncovering the truth' -

Many questions remain about why the yacht sank, and so quickly, when other boats nearby were unaffected.

Italian prosecutors have opened a probe and will hold a press conference on Saturday.

On Thursday the head of the company which built the boat said the tragedy could have been avoided.

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," said Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which includes the Perini Navi company that built Bayesian in 2008.

But Nautilus International, a maritime trade union, called for a "thorough, unbiased investigation".

General secretary Mark Dickinson warned questioning the crew's conduct "without the full facts" would be "not only unfair but also harmful to the process of uncovering the truth".

The Bayesian, owned by Lynch's family, boasted a 75-metre mast, the tallest aluminium sailing mast in the world, according to the Charter World website.

Raising the wreck would likely cost some 15 million euros and take "six to eight weeks", according to the salvage engineer who led the operation to recover the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which sank off Italy in 2012.

To recover the yacht, the mast could be removed on the seabed but the boat would be lifted up whole using a giant crane and a team of 40 specialist divers, South African engineer Nick Sloane told the Repubblica daily.

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch confirmed dead after yacht sinking

U K tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, 59, has been confirmed dead after multiple days of search and rescue efforts, multiple news agencies report . The 183-foot super-yacht, Bayesian, capsized off the coast of Sicily around 5 AM local time on Monday morning during a violent storm. Lynch was one of 22 individuals on board, including passengers and crew, with 15 individuals rescued and one body found immediately following the events. Five more bodies, including Lynch's, have since been recovered. At this time, his daughter is the only person still missing, Reuters reports , citing sources close to the rescue operation. 

Lynch co-founded tech companies Autonomy and Darktrace and founded venture capital firm Invoke Capital. Following the $11 billion sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard , Lynch has spent the past decade-plus engulfed in a legal battle over allegations of inflating sales and misleading HP . A San Francisco jury acquitted him in June of all 15 counts of fraud. 

The yacht excursion was meant to celebrate Lynch's recent victory, with family, friends, and business associates joining him. Other members of the deceased include the yacht's chef, Neda and Chris Morvillo, a Clifford Chance lawyer who represented Lynch and Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International. Angela Bacares, Lynch's wife, escaped the wreckage and is safe. 

Lynch's co-defendant, Stephen Chamberlain, 52, also faced tragedy this week. The BBC reports he was hit by a car on Saturday, August 17, while out running in Cambridgeshire, England, and died from his injuries.

You can also print a  blank application  or pick up an application at your county elections office, any Department of Motor Vehicles office, and many post offices, public libraries, and government offices. To have a paper application mailed to you call your  county elections office  or the Secretary of State's toll-free voter hotline at (800) 345-VOTE.

The Santa Clara Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR), was organized on March 4, 1926 , and is based in Santa Clara Valley, California. 

Once called "The Valley of Heart's Delight," now called "The Silicon Valley," today's Santa Clara Valley is predominantly an urban area. Fortunately, when there were people with a vision to establish industry to feed people's minds and bodies, there were also those who foresaw the need to feed people's souls. There are still a few orchards that bloom gloriously each spring. We have open spaces preserved in the hills so we can still enjoy nature's gifts. There are magnificent redwood forests in the nearby Santa Cruz mountains, and there are trails, parks, and wildlife preserves along the San Francisco Bay.

We in the DAR honor our ancestors who helped to found our country. We need to remember that what was done in the past affects our lives today. What we do today will affect the lives of those who follow us.
