Naxos Yacht Charters

Naxos is one of Greece ’s most romantic islands and it’s a fantastic central Cyclades location with the imposing Mount Zeus as the background to your superyacht charter. Blessed with a beautiful southwest facing coastline, long, golden sandy beaches and savoury locally grown food and wine, Naxos is a wonderful place to visit.

This beautiful island in the sun is the largest in the group of the Cyclades with Mykonos and Santorini close by. Mount Zeus, a 1004m high peak, is covered in lush green forests with enchanting villages scattered around. The capital of Chora is a busy harbour town on the west coast and home to historical sites like the unfinished Temple of Apollo and Portara, also known as Big Door.

Separated by small headlands, the beaches are almost joined together. Here you’ll find lots of small bays and busier spots like Agios Prokopios, Orkos and Plaka. On the west coast, there are often strong winds in the afternoon that create perfect conditions for windsurfing or kite surfing. For visitors who love natural beauty, you won’t be disappointed cruising around Naxos: The island bursts into bloom in late spring so head for the hills and take in the distinct perfume of the citrus groves as well as the delightful olive groves. As a souvenir, why not buy a bottle of the local wine to take back to your superyacht to enjoy later with a mouth-watering meal? There’s everything here in this part of Greece from beaches, water sports, romance and great family getaways for a luxury yacht charter that will be cherished for years to come.

The Cyclades Islands are a perfect quiet greek escapes from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Whereas, if you visit Mykonos you wouldn't exactly get the same! The largest Cyclades island, Naxos is big enough to need a car (or boat) to get around. While it does have some nightlife, it is nothing as wild as its neighbouring islands, but its size does mean that you can enjoy the lively nights but still get peace and quiet on those that you would prefer to relax.

There are some busy, beautiful beaches where you will find beach bars and all the infrastructure needed to make the most of the sun, sea and sand, with a beer in hand. Agios Giorgios is a popular white sandy beach with shallow turquoise waters where you can enjoy the buzz, but if this is not your scene, you sail a little way away and you'll soon find a village or town with a beach that hasn't the amenities and buzz, but a quite space that promotes a genuine sense of escape.

Naxos is historically one of the richest of the Cyclades island group. It has evidence of habitation reaching back millennia and the adventurous will soon find relics from traders and empires from thousands of years ago. If walking or mountain biking is your thing, the highest point of Naxos Island is 1,000m above sea level, and there are some great trails to explore inland.

Though many areas of the Cyclades are marketed as hideaways, you'll soon find the perfect spot to hide away on your Naxos yacht charter. You just need to set sail and keep a good watch for a spot of your very own!

Explore Naxos By Renting A Yacht

Your Naxos yacht charter will open the door to many a quiet Cycladic island retreat, with excellent sailing routes in-between.

You will almost certainly fly into Mykonos, widely held as the 'Ibiza of the Aegean Sea' thanks to its legendary nightlife and structured tourism infrastructure, but if that's not your scene, you can quickly embark on your charter holiday to find your own haven.

Human history has swept through the Cyclades for thousands of years and those in search of ancient ruins will not be disappointed. Relics of the Athenians, Ottomans and even Minoans can be found in lots of different places around the islands.

You can also avoid the loud crowd as you choose to anchor or moor your charter yacht in places that suit you. Such as the nearby beautiful island of Paros and the tiny Antiparos, which are becoming increasingly popular thanks to their ideal distance from Athens. Other small Cyclades islands like Schinoussa, Sikinos and Ios are small enough to walk across yet large enough to still feel secluded! Nearby Tinos and Syros have plenty going on that you can have some fun ashore.

You will often find that Greek villages go at their own pace, and while they may have a hotel or two, most aren't hyper focused on tourism. It is their natural beauty and calm aura that makes a greek charter so special. Chora, a stiff 20 minute walk up the hill from the main port of Ios is stunningly beautiful and well worth the walk. Similarly, Parikia on Paros has better tourism infrastructure but is resoundingly Cycladic in nature!

How To Get To Naxos

There are three airports serving Naxos Island - Mykonos is closest, as well as Athens and Santorini.

Mykonos Airport

Just 4km from Mykonos Town, the airport is served by a number of European and international airlines. This is around an hour's ferry ride to Naxos Island.

Athens Airport

This major international airport has flights from all over the world, and you can fly to Naxos' domestic airport in around 45 minutes.

Santorini Airport

Several European and international airlines fly into this airport, and you can take a ferry onto Naxos from there.

Marinas In Naxos

Somewhat surprisingly there is only one, small marina on Naxos - Naxos Marina - that has 70 berths.

Naxos Marina

With just 70 berths, this is the main marina on the island with boats for rent including luxury yacht charters , catamarans , monohull sailing yachts , luxury motor yachts and RIBs on a bareboat or crewed yacht charter basis.

Berth Characteristics:

Max Length 20m (65 Feet)

Max Draught 5m (16.5 Feet)

List of additional services: Shore power, water, toilets, washing facilities, fuel, bar, supermarket restaurant and shipyard

Suggested Sailing Routes From Naxos

Thanks to its central location in the Cyclades it is possible to sail to an island every day on a Naxos yacht charter. On your bareboat charter or skippered yacht charter, you can enjoy the small Cyclades islands with just a short sail.

7 days - the Cyclades: Just west of Naxos is Paros, and its beautiful capital, Parikia. Head SW from here to Antiparos and after a quiet night ashore, then south to Sikinos. Your next sail will be again short, this time to Ios - don't miss the capital Chora! NE to Mersini on the small Cyclades island of Schinoussa, before spending night 6 at Moutsouna on the east coast of Naxos Island. Return to base for handover the next day.

14 days - Island chain hopping: With 14 days you can stretch your sea legs a bit and sail well beyond the Cycladesthemselves. In the first couple of days you can sail through the Cyclades and then head off west to the Peloponese and then the Saronic Islands before heading north into Athens and then back to the Cyclades and to your marina. This is an opportunity to get out and explore the different sub-cultures of Greek island life, as well as get a taste for the capital city Athens as you go.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Naxos

The sailing season runs from late April to October, with July and August being the busiest months for yacht rental. This is ironic as July and August can be the worst times to sail! Both the extremely hot air temperatures and often hazardous Meltemi winds can make for big winds sailing when you honestly just want to hide from the heat.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season, with the chance of rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for a Greek island yacht charter.

Come September and October the seas remain warm having soaked up all the seasons sun. However there are often water shortages on the islands and everything looks parched.

Sailing Weather In Naxos

April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, though these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40. The northerly Meltemi winds can be fierce and can hit F7 for a solid few days.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

There are a few main points to consider when considering a yacht charter. Firstly, what is your budget? Do you have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat, or would you be interested in having a skipper on board? Whom you are taking sailing, and how many cabins you would require on board? Finally, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip? Once you have figured these questions out you can then plan the perfect yacht charter.

What are the Marinas in Naxos?

Naxos Marina is on the west coast of Naxos Island and has 70 berths for yachts of up to 20m LOA.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Naxos?

Given the large crowds, fierce heat and often feisty Meltemi winds in July and August, there are better times to do a yacht charter. We would suggest late May when the land is green, water is plentiful and the winds lighter. You also shouldn't struggle to get a berth in a marina!

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Naxos ?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Naxos?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Your Sailing Area

Exploring the lesser cyclades under sail.

The skippers of Zorba Cat consider the Lesser Cyclades as one of their favourite sailing areas in Greece, also referred to as the Small Cyclades. And, once you visit them, you’ll know why! The area offers a stunning experience from anchoring in beautiful deserted bays with crystal clear water to discovering ancient ruins and historical sites, allowing you to experience the very best of Greek culture. The focus of this trip is to explore the untouched side of the Cyclades, away from the tourist hustle and bustle. Your route will entirely depend on the wind and weather, as well as the feeling of all the guests onboard.

For the island lover and adventure traveller, this chain of small, secluded islands is a paradise. In the Lesser Cyclades, it’s all about switching off and adapting to island time. The magical combination of sailing, swimming, siestas, a good book, and generous taverna meals will make you forget what day of the week it is. The flashy boutiques and selfie-stick-wielding crowds of Mykonos and Santorini are a million miles away.

You can spend your days with a balance of sailing and exploring. Snorkel in bays and caves, discover a WWII plane wreck, wander local villages, and enjoy traditional Greek tavernas, of which the skippers know the very best and are on hand to guide you every step of the way.

Greek Island highlights

The sandy shores and crystal clear waters of Iraklia are a great choice for your first stop. Offering a historical walk to the Cave of the Sacred Icon of Agios Giannis – an initial scramble through the entrance leads to a sequence of caves full of stalactites and stalagmites.

The islands of Kufonissi (with its Caribbean-like turquoise water) and Schinoussa offer a truly unique and traditional Greek island experience. The dramatic mountain island of Amorgos is home to a breathtaking monastery carved into the rock, where the monks are waiting for you at the top with delicious psimeni (spiced “baked” raki) and loukoumi (Greek Delight you might say) after your stair climb.

If guests are interested in more sailing miles, Zorba may visit Ios and Folegandros offering one of the most scenic old towns (Choras) in the Cyclades. On the way back to Naxos, Paros ( with its quieter sister Antiparos ) offers guests a chance to visit and feel the “real Greece” with its relaxed local atmosphere. Near Antiparos, the islands of Despotico and Strongili , are known for their unspoilt nature and protected species under the Natura 2000.

Life on Board

Catarman Zorba Cat is run by sailing couple Aga and Greg who strive to provide an authentic sailing experience in Greece, where you can discover hidden anchorages away from tourist-heavy areas and dine in traditional Greek seaside tavernas. Whether you’re a family, couple, or solo traveller, there’s something for everyone with Zorba Cat’s charters. Expect an unforgettable sailing holiday with her!

Authentic Greece

During all of Zorba Cat’s voyages, the main aim is to avoid tourist crowds and instead opt for small harbours or anchorages next to deserted islands. Each day, guests stop for a swim in beautiful bays, some of which are wild, while others have a small taverna serving fresh fish and seafood for lunch, often taken out of the water before their very eyes. Guests have the opportunity to jog or practice yoga in the morning, enjoy organic healthy food on board, and experience a healthy lifestyle close to nature. Friendly locals, as well as delicious food and wine, are common features on all the islands that Zorba Cat visits.

All Zorba Cat voyages offer a perfect balance of relaxation, sightseeing and sailing! Depending on the itinerary, Aga and Greg recommend and help to organise excursions to historical sites and other places worth visiting.

A Typical Day

After a peaceful night’s rest, you can start your day by indulging in a wholesome breakfast, take a leisurely stroll ashore and savour a delicious cup of coffee while admiring the scenic surroundings.

We usually sail for a few hours each day until we arrive at a stunning bay with a deserted beach. There we have plenty of time to enjoy activities such as snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing, exploring the island or bay, and reading books. Together, we prepare a light lunch, and the Greek salad seems to be an ideal choice for a hot day. After lunch, we take some downtime, and maybe even a little siesta or a swim before setting sail again.

Zorba Cat has stand-up paddle boards, a double kayak, water skiing, inflatables and snorkel masks for guests to use included in the ticket price.

In the afternoon, we’ll set the sails again to a new location. If you’re interested, you can learn how to steer, tie knots, and pull ropes. Alternatively, you can simply relax and sunbathe on the deck. Before the evening arrives, we will arrive at a new island and dock in a charming little village. There, we will explore the area and enjoy the beautiful sunset, which is rumoured to be even more impressive than the one in Santorini!

In the evenings, our main focus is to unwind and take things slowly. We usually head to a traditional Taverna to sample some amazing local food and delicious Greek wine while enjoying live music and dancing some Zorba. “No hurry” is our motto for the night.

Zorba Cat sailing stern side on

The ticket price includes breakfast and lunch, and Aga will be your host and main chef on board Zorba Cat. However, guests are welcome to participate in all aspects of life on board and often assist with food preparation and cooking. Aga plans to go shopping on the first day so that everyone’s preferences can be considered (if  guests would like to join her, they are welcome)  The evening meals will mainly consist of dishes from Aga & Greg’s favourite Greek tavernas. Local cuisine, fresh fish, and seafood can be purchased at a relatively low cost of about 30€ per person, which includes wine.

Aga and Greg have spent many years exploring this region of Greece, and they believe that to experience authentic Greece truly, guests should have the opportunity to dine in Greek tavernas. If spending a night on a remote anchorage is a priority, dinner will be prepared communally aboard.

Zorba Cat Aga lunch

Sleeping and Relaxation

Zorba Cat is a custom-built charter catamaran, so all her communal spaces and cabins have been well-considered and are generously proportioned.

There are two primary dining areas on the yacht – one in the spacious open saloon and the other on the stern of the deck, where you can enjoy alfresco dining under a canopy cover. You’ll find numerous spots to read a book or soak up the sun, both on the decks and across the bow nets (both areas are fully cushioned). The dropped transoms are perfect for easy access in and out of the water with swim ladders and fresh water hose showers.

Zorba Cat saloon dining table

Zorba Cat has two master ensuite cabins and two forward double ensuite cabins.

The Master cabins are at the rear and on either side of the catamaran with oversized standard double beds and plenty of storage and hanging space. In one of the cabins, the bed can be split into two single beds. The ensuite is a modern push-button flush toilet with a wet room-style shower.

On each bow of the boat, there is a double ensuite cabin complete with a double bed. The ensuite is a modern push-button flush toilet with a wet room-style shower.

The price also reflects the half-board nature of this holiday, as explained in Zorba Cat’s life on board section . Breakfast and lunch are included, but you will dine out in traditional tavernas for your evening meals. This is at the guest’s expense, but you’ll find a delicious local spread for as little as 30€ per person – including the wine! There is also board cash of €3000 per charter payable upon arrival that covers fuel, marina fees, water and air-conditioning. This is reflected in the ticket price advertised and is based purely on the economics of Greece, which is still such a cash-based society.

Zorba Cat  has lots of space for possessions but please be considerate and travel with rigid cases, only in soft bags or wheelie cases that are only hard on one side.

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy-drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items, these are not mandatory and those that have sailed before may have their preferences!

  • Light shoes/trainers (with good grip)
  • Flip flips, sandals OR Crocs
  • Swimsuits and a swim towel
  • Wash towel – micro fibres are great for lightweight and quick-drying
  • Lightweight, quick-dry clothes

It can be quite a few degrees colder out at sea so please bring layers even if the forecast seems like a warm week!

  • Warm, windproof and waterproof coat
  • Sun cream (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
  • Sunglasses and a sun hat/cap
  • Small personal first aid kit and any medication you may need
  • Camera/binoculars
  • Personal wash kit (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
  • Swim shoes to ensure you dodge those pesky Greek sea urchins…!
  • Cash – EUROS. Greece is still a heavily cash-based society
  • Charging cables for personal devices and EU 2pin adaptor for use in cabins (there are 12v USB sockets to charge devices during the day by the chart table if needed)
  • A good book to read!
  • Consider a small backpack/bag for onshore exploring

SAMPLE MENU FOR Zorba Cat

Please note that this is an example of what you may be served. Aga will be your host and main chef although guests tend to get involved with all aspects of life on board Zorba. • Selection of tea, freshly ground coffee and fruit juices
  • Fruits with nuts, oats, coconut with fresh Greek yoghurt, honey and eggs.
  • Typical Greek salad with fresh feta; tzatziki with bread; local goat cheese and figs

No! It's time to disconnect from the modern conforms and reconnect with nature! When within shore range, you should be able to reach 4/5G. Please make sure you have international roaming set up on your data plan.

Yes, all cabins have 220v EU sockets - please bring a 2-pin adaptor if needed.

ZorbaCat is sometimes at anchor so you'll need to be comfortable climbing in and out of the tender dinghy. She has dropped transoms with steps and swim ladder so getting on/off the boat is fairly easy. When she's docked, there's a simple gangplank.

No experience needed to join this boat.

Some snorkel gear, 2 x SUPs and 1 x Kayaks, water-ski and inflatables. (Please note, prior experience of water-skiing is needed)

Catamarans are generally very stable so it is rare that guests get seasick. Everyone reacts differently, but we recommend ginger tea or ginger biscuits and peppermints on board. It will pass in 24 hours.

Please check with the office for under 4, but we do require a 1:1 ratio with children. There is no limit for private charters but we recommend that children can swim. No maximum age limit exists as long as guests are fit and mobile.

Naxos yacht charter guide, naxos guide.

Naxos, the biggest and more fertile island of Cyclades, it was the centre of archaic Cycladic culture. The name Naxos has its roots from Naxo, an ancient greek emigrant who was lived in the island. Additionally, according to Greek mythology, "Zeus" was raised in Naxos and for that reason, the highest mountain of the island has named Zeus. To start with the archeological sights, Portara, dedicated to Apollo,is located in the capital, Naxos town, and it's a ideal sight for your summer photo album, as it is famed for its magical atmosphere. The castle of Naxos and the archeological museum are captivating sights located also in the capital of Naxos. The buildings of the castle date back to the 13th century, so it would be a unique experience for you to discover the ancient civilization. Inside the museum you can admire objects of art and everyday use of the inhabitants of Naxos from the ancient times until today.

What To Bring On Naxos Boat Tours?

If you’ve never been on a boat day trip here’s what you’ll want to pack:

  • Bag (ideally waterproof, if not, at least a waterproof pouch for electronics)
  • Water bottle
  • Hoodie or a cardigan

A waterproof bag is not necessary for every boat trip. If you’re taking a larger boat, your stuff will probably stay dry as there is a dedicated dry space to put it.

A swimsuit (and something dry to change into!) is a must if you’ll be swimming on the trip.

You can take a regular beach towel, but if you’re backpacking around Cyclades you probably have a quick dry microfibre towel. It works great, and I love mine!

Sunscreen is a must ! The sun is strong in Naxos, and you’ll want to have a bottle of sunscreen to reapply throughout the day if you’ll be swimming and hanging out on the boat.

Most Naxos boat tours are all-inclusive, meaning you’ll get freshly prepared lunch, snacks, and drinks. But after years of traveling as a vegan, I always pack some snacks in case vegan options are not available.

If you’re traveling to Naxos in the shoulder season, it can get chilly at night. Especially if you’re going for a Naxos sunset cruise, so grab a cardigan just in case.

I love to take a GoPro on boat tours as it is waterproof (and saltwater resistant, unlike iPhone!) and you can take incredible underwater photos.

Most boat tours in Naxos require you to show your ID or other proof of identity, so remember to bring it along!

Best Places To Visit On Boat Trips From Naxos?

Naxos is a windy island, that’s why most tours don’t offer fixed itineraries and the same company can take you along Naxos’ west coast one day and to Paros the other day.

When you see where is Naxos on the map , these are some of the places you’d want to see on a boat trip from Naxos:

  • Rina Cave : One of the most popular places in Naxos, a sea cave only accessible by boat tour. The water around the cave is a mix of saltwater and mountain spring water and has a unique blue hue.
  • Church Agios Sozon : A tiny, whitewashed church perched on the side of the cliff among the rocks. The easiest way to access is by sea.
  • The Small Cyclades : A remote group of islands on the southeast of Naxos. It is a place to get away from the crowds and enjoy an authentic Greek island atmosphere. While you could stay on one of the bigger islands, Naxos sailing trips are the most popular way to visit.
  • Paros and Antiparos : If Paros is not already on your Cyclades itinerary , you can easily visit it on a boat day trip from Naxos.

FAQ: Boat Trips From Naxos

Most Naxos boat cruises depart from Naxos Marina, located in the city center of Naxos Chora, right next to Naxos ferry port.

Yes, you should book Naxos boat tours in advance. Unless you’re spending a week on the island, and you want to shop around in person, it is better to have your tours sorted out in advance. The best ones are often sold out several days in advance and it is hard to get a last-minute spot in high season.

While Naxos boat tours are cheaper than sailing trips from Santorini, they are not cheap activities. These tours start from around 70€ per person, up to 200€ in the high season. While the price might seem high upfront, they are a full-day activity and usually include lunch, snacks, and unlimited drinks.

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

UK's vessel Bayesian

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

The sailing conditions in Naxos are excellent, with the Meltemi winds in the summer months offering an exciting sailing experience. The island’s wide array of marinas and ports, such as the main harbour of Naxos Town, provide safe and convenient docking options.

Naxos’s rich cultural heritage enhances its charm as a sailing destination. Embark on a journey to explore ancient ruins, Byzantine churches, and traditional villages. The island’s historical highlight, the Portara, or Temple of Apollo, is a must-visit landmark.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Naxos

At Yachting.Rent, we are proud to offer a diverse fleet of vessels to cater to the unique needs and tastes of every sailing enthusiast. When it comes to sailing in Naxos, two popular options among our clients are sailing boats and catamarans.

Sailing boats are perfect for those who wish to engage with the art of sailing itself. As the winds fill the sails and the craft cuts through the Aegean waves, there’s a sense of harmony and connection with the natural elements that is both thrilling and soothing. Sailing boats are also very versatile, suitable for a romantic getaway, a solo adventure, or a family trip.

On the other hand, catamarans offer an ideal choice for those seeking stability, space, and luxury. With their twin hulls, catamarans provide more stability than a monohull sailing boat, making them an excellent choice for those prone to seasickness. Their large decks and spacious interiors are perfect for accommodating larger groups or families and make for a comfortable and luxurious living space.

Whether you opt for the charm and adventure of a sailing boat or the comfort and stability of a catamaran, rest assured that our vessels are equipped with all the amenities you’ll need for a memorable journey. At Yachting.Rent, our mission is to provide an unparalleled sailing experience in the gorgeous waters of Naxos. Whatever your preference, we’ve got the perfect charter ready for you. Set sail with us and let the winds of Naxos guide your unforgettable voyage.

Cyclades Sailing Itinerary

Yacht charter day 0 – arrival in paros.

Our 7 Day Cyclades itinerary starts from the island of Paros , famous since antiquity for its fine white marble that was used for the Temple of Apollo on Delos , the Venus of Milos, and many other famous statues and landmarks. Paros has quickly risen to the top of some of the most popular spots for Greek summer holidays but still retains that laid-back touch and local aesthetic. Arriving early on the island will allow you to take a stroll around Naoussa and Parikia and acquaint yourself with the cubic whitewashed buildings around its narrow streets or do some hiking and explore the town from above.

> Sailing in Paros – important information:

  • The main harbor of Parikia is relatively sheltered and the busiest port on the island
  • Don’t miss Antiparos and the stalactite cave

> Sailing in Paros – don’t miss:

  • Swimming at Kolymbithres beach
  • Walking around the picturesque Parikia and Naoussa
  • A visit to Lefkes village

catamaran charter naxos

Yacht Charter Day 1 – Paros to Naxos

From Paros , we start our day early, with plenty of time to make it across to nearby Naxos . The largest island in the Cyclades , Naxos is also one of the greenest and most diverse islands , with lush valleys and impressive mountains that offer plenty of hiking opportunities. Here you will also find beautiful monuments and one of the finest traditional cuisines in the Aegean.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a beach on Naxos island that isn’t amazing. Agios Prokopios , 5km south of Chora, is a Blue Flag beach with a large soft sand sandbed that has space for everyone. On the western coast, we find Plaka and Saint George , two of the most popular beaches for water sports activities. Anything from windsurfing, water-skiing, SUP, and jet skiing equipment.

> Sailing in Naxos – important information:

  • There are half a dozen anchorages in Naxos to pick from
  • Lots to discover, so consider extending your stay here if possible to enjoy everything on offer

> Sailing in Naxos – don’t miss:

  • A stroll around the Old Town of Naxos
  • Hiking Mount Zas for panoramic views
  • Tasting Naxian potatoes and Kokoras me Makaronia (rooster and pasta)

catamaran charter naxos

Yacht Charter Day 2 – Naxos to Ios

Heading south past the small islets of Iraklia and Schinoussa , we reach the island of Ios . A vibrant island, Ios has been known for its nightlife . It is a pole of attraction for young holiday goers who seek to experience parties, loud music, and flawless sandy beaches. But there are also plenty of other attractions should you desire them, like a visit to the Byzantine fortress of Palaiokastro so you can appreciate the view from above and beautiful churches like Panagia Gremiotissa and Aghia Ekaterini.

> Sailing in Ios – important information:

  • The main port on the island is Yialos
  • Anchorages of Milopotamos, Koumbaras and Manganari offer access to beautiful beaches

> Sailing in Ios – don’t miss:

  • Enjoying the nightlife and party scene
  • Swimming at Manganari
  • Visiting Homer’s Tomb and seeing the view from above

Ios Island Greece Cyclades

Yacht Charter Day 3 – Ios to Santorini

The queen of the Cyclades could not be missing from your itinerary, so after enjoying the sandy coves of Ios , we head towards the volcanic landscape of Santorini . As one of the most popular destinations for honeymooners in the world, this is where you can enjoy majestic sunsets , excellent local produce, including the famous Vinsanto wine that has grown since antiquity, and discover the history of the Akrotiri peninsula. The settlement of Akrotiri is one possible location for the long-lost city of Atlantis, which was destroyed in the 16th century BC and brought to light in 1967.

> Sailing in Santorini – important information:

  • The safest anchorage is Vlyhada public marina
  • Plenty of shoals at the entrance
  • The caldera is incredibly deep – no anchoring possible

> Sailing in Santorini – don’t miss:

  • A visit to the picturesque village of Oia with views of the Caldera
  • Tasting Saganaki cheese, fava dip, and white eggplants

Yacht Charter Day 4 – Santorini to Folegandros

On Day 4, we set sail towards the island of Folegandros . With its distinctive architecture and rugged landscape, Folegandros is an opportunity to explore a different side of the Greek islands. Unlike the nearby islands of Mykonos , Santorini , and Naxos , Folegandros enjoys fewer crowds and is preferred for its laid-back aesthetic and feel. Wandering around the “ Kastro ” in the main village of Chora is a must, as is a walk up to the Church of Panagia to enjoy the view. The beaches tend to be wild and unspoiled, with trees offering their shade and not much else in terms of infrastructure.

> Sailing in Folegandros – important information:

  • Two main anchorages: Karavostasi and Ormos Vathi
  • Night approaches not recommended for Karavostasi
  • Most beaches on the island are only reachable by boat

> Sailing in Folegandros – don’t miss:

  • The walk to the medical castle for panoramic views and the Church of Panagia
  • A swim at Agali beach
  • Snorkelling at Katergo beach with crystal clear waters
