1974 Beetle Cat
- Description
Seller's Description
Beetle Cat, 1974, 1974 classic Beetle Cat that is somewhat of a project boat for sale for $1625. Important fact: this boat #1688 is fastened with silicon bronze.
I bought the boat 16 years ago from the Beetle Boat Shop in Mass. The shop installed a new centerboard trunk and skeg.
I brought the boat to Houston; Wooded it, stripped and varnished all bright wood, replaced canvas deck, recaulked with cotton, covered below waterline with two layers of West System cloth and epoxy, sanded and painted topsides and added a black tape boot toping. All materials came from the Beetle Boat Shop.
Please look up Beetles on the web to learn more about this boat.
Also check Sailing Texas listing from 2012. The boat was sold then and the day before pick up the buyer said things had changed for him and I decided to keep such a fine boat. I now have a 1955 mahogany Whirlwind and will be spending my time with her. Over 4000 Beetles have and still are built of wood and cost about $20K new with sails. Would suggest adding watertight sealing around centerboard trunk or inside trunk. If sailing often then just presoak bilge preferably with salt water before launching to let the cedar expand. The boat comes with all parts and and extra sail and cockpit cover. Brass letters GOOD TERN on bright transom.
Suggested work:
Refresh varnish-can use Jamestown Distributors Lust varnish with no sanding between coats. Use old floor boards as a pattern to replace. Young man starting a sand blasting business got carried away and chewed up the boards and trunk using baking soda. He should have stopped, he apologized. The trim around the cockpit coaming is 1/4 round synthetic that can be bent with a hair dryer. Try using larger size or steambent wood if you know how.
Beetle Cats look good, photograph well, are very seaworthy, carry lots of children and generate good conversation at the launch ramp.
Many pictures of New England show a Beetle swinging at a mooring at sunset or sailing in a fleet in Martha’s Vineyard.
Black trailer designed for a Beetle is available as a separate item.
Freshly painted with good tires and new wheel bearings. Extra price to be discussed. or phone 713-248-3329
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
The ‘authentic’ BEETLE CAT is a strict one-design class and built of wood. After World War II, Carl Beetle, son of the designer, passed the rights for construction of the original Beetle Cat Boats to the Concordia Company. As of 2014 it was being built solely by the Beetle Boat Shop. (Beetle Cat Inc.) There are, and have been, numerous boats modeled after the original BEETLE CAT, of fiberglass and other methods of construction. (In the US and elsewhere.)
