There was a saying was that many people feel they don’t need to learn to drive a car or make love... ( a fallacy on perhaps both counts for many) , perhaps we need to add drive a tender to that list ? At any rate we can all improve in our endeavours with a little upskilling and helpful advice . Whether it’s on the road in the bedroom or on the water . Speed and distraction are always your enemy . A yachts tender may take many forms but over the years has morphed from the 8ft pram dinghy under oars I used to love rowing as a kid to a high speed RIB with usually a 15hp engine . The rowing boat kept you healthy and others safe . The RIB is superb for covering distance , carrying heavy loads and sadly killing swimmers , turtles and anything else in your path . Many spend hours considering all sorts of safety equipment from EPIRBS to the right satellite communicator or personal locator yet don’t consider the biggest risk factors . If you don’t concentrate and or use a kill cord your RIB will run over you if you mess up a high speed turn . Similarly at 25-30 k you have little chance of seeing a swimmer checking the anchor of the yacht your admiring . You are the captain of that vessel your driving. You may seriously wound or kill someone including yourself. You are liable to be charged with manslaughter if you kill the person on the water operating at unsafe speed . You will never forgive yourself . So many times I see a near miss. So please use a kill cord and go slowly through anchored yachts . Think carefully about the consequences . Please have a sober tender driver after a session ashore and can I encourage the RYA to consider that a yachtmaster who cannot train and ensure that dinghy drivers , handle boats safely is not much of a yacht master at all . By Dick - 15 Sep 2020 Nigel Studdart - 9/15/2020 Hi Nigel, I share your concern and applaud your bringing it to wider attention. May others follow your lead. I think training institutions can certainly play a part in bringing some common sense and good seamanship into the use of dinghies. That said, I do not think it is the whole story or even most of the answer. Most everyone goes to some form of driver’s education, but there are still lots of drivers who take risks with other people’s lives as well as with their own. It is a bit of a theme I have going that we, the recreational boating community, are best served by monitoring, even policing, ourselves. In your shoes, I have actively motioned for those going fast in anchorages to slow down with open hands pushing down. If possible, I speak to them. It is often dinghies, but small runabouts run similarly fast and they throw up a big wake. A group that may be useful is the Seven Seas Cruising Association (similar to the UK’s Cruising Association) as there are often a number of SSCA boats in any Carib anchorage and they are likely to share your concern: Their motto is “to leave a clean wake”. (Get to know their burgee.) They might be a good group to join as well as we benefitted from membership in CA when in the UK. Boats with children are also likely to share your concerns. I was wandering around a marina yesterday and was dismayed to see how few folk have made the conversion from two or four stroke tenders to the quiet, reliable electrics that some of us adopted a decade ago. Like electric car drivers, I suspect electric tender drivers tend to drive with range and economy in mind. Generally that means less speed and less danger. Maybe a shift from 15hp fossil fuelled, froth makers to solar refreshed electric outboards would save lives and inflict less pestilence on peaceful anchorages? I don’t know if you noticed but the latest OCC Challenge Grant is being used to move towards an electric future in the wold of endangered whale surveillance. Simon |
By Nigel.Studdart - 6 Oct 2020 As an Update to this yesterday morning we pulled a young man out of the water in Admiralty Bay Bequia who made a fast turn and threw himself out of the dinghy. Fortunately I was having my morning coffee on the aft deck at 7am and saw the dinghy circling and a head in the water a few hundred meters away at the back of the anchorage . Our tender was in Davits so a crewmember Sher shot below to radio for help while I rapidly launched the tender. A very brave Bequian was approaching in a Kayak as the dinghy circled at full speed around the guy in the water. I managed to get a tender over waved the kayak to safety and then get over dodge the boat and pull him up into the tender after the fastest I have ever launched a dinghy . Next was the incredibly dodgy ,in hindsight, task of capturing the dingy as it circled menacingly at full speed . We managed to come alongside and grab the kill cord and kill it. God was smiling at all of us that day and that was an incredibly lucky young man. In hindsight, so was I lucky in stopping that boat without getting injured . On reflection next time I would let it be , and stand off ,or use a floating anchor line ( I keep a floating line for the dinghy anchor) to Foul the prop and stop it . Getting alongside was not the safest manoeuvre and I wouldn’t repeat it. I also certainly would not recommend it . On several attempts that dinghy stern swung dangerously close and it would be easy to get sideswiped by the prop. I would not advise this method of coming alongside. I was running on adrenaline . On reflection stand off or foul the prop . Please use your kill chord and use a safe speed . I got the guy back aboard and he left back to his boat shaking . He wasn’t the only one . |
By Nigel.Studdart - 6 Oct 2020 This casualty was a 4m tender with a 15 or 25 hp engine on it running at full speed so I’m guessing the friction control on the throttle was also tight . One other learning from this is keep that friction loose so the throttle goes back to low speed if you release . That engine and boat were positively demonic at that speed and incredibly difficult to deal with. |

It pains me to say that I would completely support you not doing anything more than rescue the swimmer next time. It is not worth getting hurt dealing with someone else’s poor judgment. Now anyone can suffer from bad luck, but there are just too many out there now on boats who should not be: They are unprepared and using poor judgment. I have focused on boats doing offshore passage making in my writing, but you are absolutely correct in pointing out the same dynamic in an anchorage. You could have been hurt. SAR personnel could be hurt when they go out for a rescue. Too often, as was your rescue, it should not have occurred in the first place. PORTICELLO, Italy — Survivors of a storm that sank a superyacht off Sicily recounted their ordeal to one of the doctors who rushed to their aid, with some saying it took mere minutes for the 180-foot ship to go down.
Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News on the phone Thursday that he arrived in the seaside village of Porticello before dawn Monday, about an hour after the $40 million Bayesian sank in the violent and sudden storm.
Of the 22 people onboard, 15 survived despite storm conditions and darkness, climbing onto a lifeboat before being rescued by a nearby sailboat. The crew members have made no public statements so far, though some have been interviewed by investigators.
“They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down,” Genco said, recounting what the survivors told him. “All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries,” he said.
It appears they had just minutes to abandon the sinking ship, Genco said.
“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”
Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the Bayesian's shipbuilder, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”
In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said.
Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in.
When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair.
“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found .
Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.
Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday.
Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.
Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help.
“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.
Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said.
Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water.
The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank.
“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”
Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid.
“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.
The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

You may think I am a little crazy, but I like tender ports . They give me that feeling of adventure and exploration that I love so much.
However, if you are not familiar with this topic I will explain, in a simple way, what tender ports are . Following that explanation, there’s a complete list with all the tender ports for each cruise line. I am sure it will be useful to you.

Tender Ports are ports where cruise ships cannot dock directly at a pier due to different reasons . The most common are shallow water depth, the port’s size being too small for large cruise ships, or environmental and preservation concerns.
To solve this, and to allow passengers to still reach land, cruise ships anchor offshore and passengers are transported to and from land via smaller boats known as tenders or water shuttles.
Very often these tenders are part of the cruise ship’s own lifeboats or can be provided by the local port authorities.
This type of disembarkation requires a more rigid organization . For big cruises, passengers are usually assigned to groups and given specific tender times to avoid overcrowding and ensure a smooth transfer.
As I was saying at the beginning of the article, the use of tenders adds an adventurous element to the cruise experience .
I like it, and I think it is an interesting experience for children as well. The journey between the ship and the shore, although short, can offer unique views and a closer look at the sea and the local marine environment. It’s almost like it’s an integral part of the excursion experience .
However, as with most things, there are also downsides. One of the most evident and most frequent among passengers is seasickness .
The boats used for this transfer are quite small and are greatly affected by wave movement.
Moreover, I don’t like that this method is not 100% accessible to passengers with disabilities . Usually, cruise lines offer assistance to people in need but passengers who use assistive devices may not be able to get on or off the ship .
Destinations that require tendering often include hidden gems . These kinds of places usually offer more intimate and exclusive exploration opportunities.

An innocent mistake could well have proven a death sentence for those aboard the doomed luxury yacht Bayesian, as the desperate search for survivors continues off the Sicilian coast
A sailing expert says an innocent error could well have doomed those aboard the ill-fated Bayesian, which sunk to depths of 165ft in the early hours of Monday, August 19.
The luxury superyacht sank in a freak tornado off the coast of Sicily , turning what should have been a dreamy excursion into a waking nightmare. Speaking with Italian media, survivor Angela Bacares, who is married to missing billionaire tech tycoon Mike Lynch, revealed that passengers were awoken by a 'slight tilt' shortly before 5am. It was then that the sickening sound of shattering glass made it clear something had gone catastrophically wrong.
Out of the 10 crew members and 12 passengers, 15 made it back to shore, including a courageous British mum who saved her one-year-old baby from drowning .. Sadly, the body of chef Recaldo Thomas has since been recovered, while six others remain unaccounted for. There is still a glimmer of hope, however, as it's believed those trapped inside the capsized sailboat potentially could have survived thanks to air pockets inside the cabins.
As the third day of searching continues, the Mirror takes a look at the cruel twist of fate that resulted in tragedy...
The day before the horror incident was filled with Italian sunshine, reaching highs of 33C. A sailing expert believes hatches and doors could have been left open overnight to improve airflow, with the balmy temperatures making it difficult to sleep.
Sam Jefferson, editor of magazine Sailing Today, told BBC News: "I would have said that the boat got hit very hard by the wind, it was pinned over on its side. I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that.
"The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge. It acted almost like a sail. [It] pushed the boat hard over on its side. [The boat] filled with water before it could right. This is all speculation, but that's the only logical explanation."
This comes as a new CCTV clip taken from a villa just 200m away from the wreckage site emerges, showing the £30m vessel slowly vanishing off the coast of Porticello, engulfed by heavy rain. Lights from the 56-metre yacht can also be seen in the distance just before the horror began.
As reported by Italian publication Giornale Di Sicilia , one witness told of how he went to check his cameras after hearing the devastating news. The villa owner said: "In just sixty seconds, you can see the ship disappear. Of about twenty cameras installed in the house, only one was not disturbed by the wind and rain. You can clearly see what is happening. There was nothing that could be done for the boat. It disappeared in a very short time."
Getting inside the wreckage has proven difficult for brave divers, who are only able to search for ten minutes each. On Tuesday, the rescuers were able to reach the living room area by cutting a hole in the hull, but the cabins unfortunately remained inaccessible as they were reportedly blocked by a number of objects. But on Wednesday, the expert divers finally managed to break through to access the master cabin on the vessel.

Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht owned by the family of a British tech mogul that sank Monday off the coast of Sicily in southern Italy were working Wednesday to recover the remains of most of the six people left missing after the accident, Sicily's civil protection agency confirmed to CBS News. Two bodies had been brought to shore in Porticello, near Palermo, and two more were in the process of being brought ashore.
Five bodies have been found, and one person was still missing, reported the AP, as searches concluded for the day.
Rescue efforts have been challenging because the Bayesian is now lying on the seabed at a 90-degree angle, at a depth of 164 feet. Divers can only spend 10 minutes at the dive site before having to resurface to avoid decompression sickness, or "the bends."
Britain's Telegraph newspaper reported that the bodies of Mike Lynch, the technology entrepreneur , and his 18-year-old daughter were among the remains recovered Wednesday, but the civil protection chief would not confirm that report to CBS News.
Six people, including Lynch and his daughter, were left missing after the vessel sank in a violent storm early Monday morning. One man, the Bayesian superyacht's chef, was found dead soon after the boat capsized.
Fifteen passengers and crew managed to escape the accident, including Lynch's wife, who owned the vessel.
Along with Lynch and his daughter Hannah, the technology mogul's American lawyer Chris Morvillo, a former assistant district attorney in New York, his wife Neda, and British banker Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, were also missing.
Lynch was acquitted in June of fraud charges in the U.S. that could have landed him in prison for decades. Lynch's co-defendant in that fraud case, who was also acquitted, died Saturday after being hit by a car while out jogging in England.
Questions have intensified on how the state-of-the-art vessel could have sunk in mere minutes, while boats nearby were largely unaffected. Vessels of this caliber have numerous safety measures, including watertight sub-compartments designed to keep them from sinking quickly even if taking on water.
Italian prosecutors are questioning the crew and passengers in an effort to reconstruct events, including the ship's captain, 51-year-old New Zealander James Catfield.
One possible culprit is the ship's keel, a fin-like structure designed to prevent the boat from being blown sideways by the wind, thus giving the boat greater stability. The Bayesian had a retractable or lifting keel, which could be retracted to 4 meters (useful to enter a shallow harbor) or extended to 10 meters. If the keel had been up, it is possible that fierce winds could have caused the ship to capsize.
When asked whether divers had discovered that the Bayesian's keel was indeed up, a spokesman for the Italian Coast Guard told CBS News that it was up to the prosecutors to answer that question.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.
Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.
Here's what we know so far:
The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time.
Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.
Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank.
"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.
"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.
Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.
"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added.
Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.
"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.
Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.
Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.
Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.
The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".
Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event.

There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht.
Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.
Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing.
They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.
Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.
"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.
Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy.
The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.
He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006.
He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million.
HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.
As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges.
He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling.
He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year.
Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion.
Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."
The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.
Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support.
The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.
It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.
The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.
Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

The ship also won a string of awards for its design.
Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking.
It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.
