6 Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Boat
If you own a boat, you know that it requires regular maintenance to keep it in good condition. Neglecting your boat’s maintenance can lead to expensive repairs and reduced performance. Here are six essential tips to help you maintain your boat: Following these essential tips, you can keep your boat in top condition and enjoy it for years.
Clean Your Boat Regularly
Cleaning your boat regularly is essential to maintaining its appearance and preventing damage. Saltwater, bird droppings, and other debris can cause stains, rust, and further damage your boat’s surfaces.
Use mild soap and water to clean your boat’s exterior and interior, and rinse it thoroughly to remove any residue.
Check and Change Fluids and Filters
Your boat’s engine and other systems require regular fluid changes and filter replacements to perform optimally.
Check your oil, coolant, and other fluids regularly, and change them according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Also, check and replace your fuel filters, air filters, and water pump impellers as needed.
Inspect and Maintain Electrical Systems
Electrical systems are essential to your boat’s operation, so inspecting and maintaining them regularly is crucial.
Check your battery for corrosion and damage, and test it regularly to ensure it’s holding a charge. Inspect your wiring for wear or injury, and repair or replace any damaged wiring.
Check and Maintain Your Hull and Bottom Paint
Your boat’s hull and bottom paint protect it from damage caused by saltwater, UV rays, and other elements. Check your hull and bottom paint regularly for cracks, chips, or other signs of wear, and repair them promptly.
Applying a fresh coat of bottom paint every few years can also help prevent damage and prolong the life of your boat.
Schedule Regular Maintenance
Regular maintenance is essential to keeping your boat in top condition. Schedule regular maintenance appointments with NN Marine Services to have your boat inspected, serviced, and repaired as needed.
This will help you catch any problems early and prevent costly repairs.

Bottom Painting Services
Marina mile yachting center.
- Bottom Painting
Bottom paint is also known as antifouling paint and is designed to discourage weeds, barnacles, and other aquatic organisms from getting attached to the underwater portion of your boat’s hull. If your vessel stays in the water year round, during most or all of the boating season, application of bottom paint is a must.
Did you know?
If your boat has never been bottom painted and you’re considering antifouling application, make sure you understand that:
- Once the bottom paint is applied, the die is cast, and that periodic bottom-paint application, cleaning, and renewal become a permanent part of the vessel’s routine maintenance schedule.
- The application of bottom paint in some cases (particularly on trailersized boats) may be viewed as a negative to potential buyers if you decide to sell later on.
Call today and enquire about our consolidated “All-Inclusive Bottom Paint” specials!
Bottom Paint Services
The Best For Your Boat:
Marina Mile Yachting Center of Fort Lauderdale offers certified underwater paint applicators working under manufactures direction with all your favorite waterproof paint brands including but not limited to:
- SeaHawk Paints
and more…
Other Services Available During Haulout:
- Running gear paint applications
- Underwater Antifouling removal and new system applications
- Anode removal and replacement
- Prop and shaft and rudder removal and re-installation
- Propeller and shaft reconditioning
- Cutlass bearing replacement
- Spurs Service and Installations
- Tide seals and repacking
- Transducer and underwater light installations
- Stabilizer Seals
- Thru-Hull Valve Servicing and installations
As you can tell by the sheer number of antifouling coats available on the market, not one bottom paint type or brand works best in all water, weather, and locations. A yacht anchored in Seattle will require a different antifouling paint from one docked in the tropical waters of South Florida. While there are plenty of bottom paints to choose from, there’s only one place you should take your vessel: Marina Mile Yachting Center.

Five bodies found by divers searching sunken Bayesian superyacht
Divers have continued to search for survivors off the coast of Sicily amid hopes some survivors might be trapped in air pockets inside the ship.

Five bodies have been found by divers searching the wreck of the superyacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily.
Four bodies have been brought ashore and efforts to recover the fifth will continue on Thursday.
The body of the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas, had been recovered already, the Italian coastguard confirmed to Sky News on Tuesday. The discoveries bring the total number of confirmed dead to six.
Authorities are yet to confirm the identity of the bodies found on Wednesday. One person remains missing.
Superyacht search - latest updates
British tech billionaire Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter were among those missing after the Bayesian went down as a result of being hit by a tornado on Monday morning.
Six were missing in total - with Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and US lawyer Chris Morvillo also unaccounted for, along with their wives, Judy Bloomer and Neda Morvillo.
Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the firm which built the yacht, said he had been left in "disbelief" at the news of the Bayesian sinking while anchored off the coast of Sicily.
"Being the manufacturer of Perini and knowing very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said, "and as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."
He added their structure and keel made them "unsinkable".
Divers involved in the search and rescue operation for the sunken Costa Concordia in 2013 have been called in to stretch the amount of time underwater to 20 minutes per dive. For the past two days, a major challenge for divers had been their limit of 12 minutes on each dive, including the time to go down and come back up.
But the Costa Concordia divers have cylinders containing particular micelles which allow for a longer dive.
Divers have been looking for survivors in the hope that some might be trapped in air pockets inside the ship, but experts believe the chances any are left alive are slim.
Divers from the local fire service have been entering the water with torches attached to their headgear at the site of the shipwreck on Wednesday afternoon.
A police boat was also at the scene, while a helicopter hovered overhead.
Dr Jamie Pringle, a reader in forensic geoscience at Keele University, told Sky News there have been cases where people have survived for about 60 hours in similar depths of water.
But he says they are "very rare" and the longer time goes on, the less likely it is they will be found alive.
Simon Boxall, a senior lecturer in oceanography at the University Of Southampton, said it is "fairly certain" they are still on board.
He said it is also possible they were thrown from the boat and into the sea, so a search of the surrounding waters will continue.
Sky News correspondent Ashna Hurynag reported that eight divers from across Italy had been working to find survivors.
In total, there are between 20 and 50 emergency personnel involved in the operation.
The Bayesian, a 56-metre (184ft) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early on Monday as it was moored a short distance offshore.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his lawyer and four other people are missing after a superyacht carrying 22 people sank off the coast of Sicily, authorities say.
Fifteen people, including Mr Lynch's wife, have been rescued after the boat was hit by a violent storm at sunrise, according to the Italian Coast Guard.

Divers had located the wreck 50 metres underwater and search operations are continuing.
British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his lawyer and four other people are missing after a superyacht carrying 22 people capsized and sank off the coast of Sicily due to bad weather.
Mr Lynch's wife and 14 other people were rescued, including a one-year-old girl, and one person has died.
A person familiar with the rescue operation confirmed to Reuters that Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah has not been accounted for.
The British-flagged, 56-metre Bayesian had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, representing British, American and Canadian nationalities, the Italian Coast Guard said.

Managers of the sailing yacht Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank near the Sicilian capital Palermo, Italy, at 4:30am Monday, local time.
"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.
Fifteen people were rescued and taken to shore at Porticello, where eight were receiving treatment in hospital and remain in a stable condition, the Italian Coast Guard said.
One body has been recovered and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters where it had been anchored.
British Bill Gates missing
Mr Lynch is often dubbed by UK media as "the British Bill Gates" and the BBC confirmed the luxury yacht was tied to his wife, Angela Bacares.
According to maritime data service Equasis, the owner of the the Bayesian is listed as Revtom Ltd, the BBC reported.
Additionally, the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.
Mr Lynch was acquitted in June by a jury in San Francisco of fraud charges linked to the sale of his software company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard for $US11 billion ($16.4 billion) in 2011.
He said at the time that he was "elated" to be cleared in the criminal trial in which he denied any wrongdoing, and blamed HP for botching the integration of the two companies.
In a separate incident, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday after a road accident left him critically injured.
Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — had been placed on life support after being hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning.
Rescued baby held above waves
The coast guard said that rescue efforts had located the wreck at a depth of 50 metres underwater.
The Italian fire and rescue service agency said search operations at sea were continuing with the coordination of the Italian Coast Guard, in a translated post on the social media platform X.
One of the survivors, identified only as Charlotte, said she had momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported.
A spokesperson for the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said they were providing support to British nationals.
"We are providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families following an incident in Sicily, and are in contact with the local authorities"
Captain of nearby boat helped rescue passengers
The captain of a nearby boat that helped to rescue passengers from the Bayesian said that when the storm hit he turned his engine on to keep control of the vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian.
"We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," Karsten Borner told Reuters.
He said that his crew then found 15 survivors on a life raft, including three who were seriously injured and took them on board before the coast guard picked them up.
"There were 15 people inside," he said.
"Then we communicated with the Coast Guard and after some time, the Coast Guard came and later picked up injured people, and 2 hours later they picked up the other people."
Mr Borner said "a little baby and the wife of the owner" were among the survivors, while the owner of the sunken ship and another child were among those missing.
He described the conditions as "very strong" and said that his vessel was "heeling" but the Bayesian "went flat on the water and then down".
"There was a light and we saw that the ship was aside and then we saw a triangle," he said.
"So I think she went back down."
Storms and heavy rainfall swept Italy in recent days
Prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation to look into what had gone wrong.

"The wind was very strong," a coast guard official in Palermo told Reuters.
"Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude."
After weeks of scorching heat, storms and heavy rainfall have swept down Italy in recent days — with floods and landslides causing major damage in the north of the country.
Local media said a fierce storm, including water spouts, had battered the area overnight but skies were clear and seas calm by Monday morning.
The ANSA news agency said the yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, had been moored off the port at Porticello.
The yacht had won a string of awards for its design and can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites.
The Bayesian was known for its single 75-meter mast, one of the world’s tallest made of aluminium and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank.

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.
Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.
Divers recover at least 1 body during search of yacht wreckage off Sicily
The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.
Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.
Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:

Who is Mike Lynch?
Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.
Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).
Search resumes for British tech magnate and 5 others after yacht sinks off Sicily
Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.
Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.
Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.
Who else was aboard?
Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.
Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.
Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .
Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.
Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?
The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).
The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.
The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.
What about the rescue effort?
Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.
Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.
When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.

Canadian dead, others missing after superyacht sinks near Sicily
Social sharing.
A Canadian man has died after a luxury yacht was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm and sank off the coast of Sicily early on Monday, local officials said.
The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long sailboat, was carrying 22 people and was anchored just off shore near the port of Porticello when it was hit by ferocious weather, the Italian coast guard said in a statement.
Eyewitnesses said the superyacht vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn. Fifteen people escaped before it went down, including a one-year-old girl.
The Palermo Port Authority told CBC News officials recovered the body of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-born man who had been living in Antigua. He had been the ship's on-board cook.
Some media, including CBC, had earlier mistakenly reported his name as Thomas Recaldo or Ricardo Thomas.
Global Affairs Canada said it was "aware of reports" Canadian citizen had died.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this tragic event," it said in a statement.
- What we know about the capsized superyacht off the Sicilian coast
Six other people were missing after the sinking, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his teenage daughter Hannah and Jonathan Bloomer, president of Morgan Stanley International, La Republicca reported.
The Italian coast guard said those who were missing had British, American and Canadian nationalities.
'The ship behind us was gone'
"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coast guard official in the Sicilian capital Palermo told Reuters.
Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency said a mini tornado known as a waterspout that forms above the water had struck the area overnight.
Eight of the 15 people rescued were transferred to local hospitals. All were in a stable condition, local media reported.
One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Emsley, said she had momentarily lost hold of her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother.
The father, James Emsley, also survived, Cocina said.
The captain of a nearby boat told Reuters that when the storm hit, he turned the engine on to keep control of the vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian.
"We managed to keep the ship in position, and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," Karsten Borner told journalists.

Cocina of the civil protection agency said Bacares was among those rescued, but it wasn't immediately clear if she required hospital treatment.
Lynch, 59, is one of Britain's best-known tech entrepreneurs. He built the country's largest software firm, Autonomy, from his groundbreaking research at Cambridge University. His PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on one of the mathematical theories of English statistician Thomas Bayes, after whom the yacht was named.
Lynch sold the firm to HP in a multibillion-dollar deal in 2011, before the transaction unravelled spectacularly following the acquisition, with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud.
Lynch spent much of the last decade in court defending his name. He was acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June after he spent more than a year living effectively under house arrest.
In a grim coincidence, one of his co-defendants in the U.S. fraud trial, Autonomy's former vice-president of finance Stephen Chamberlain, was hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning, two days before the Bayesian capsized. He was placed on life support and died Monday, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke with Reuters.
Divers find wreckage
The coast guard said divers were inspecting the wreck of the Bayesian, which was lying at a depth of 49 metres.
Prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation to look into what had gone wrong.
Storms and heavy rainfall have swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, which had lifted the temperature of the Mediterranean sea to record levels, raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts said.
"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 C, which is almost three degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," said meteorologist Luca Mercalli.
"We can't say that this is all due to global warming, but we can say that it has an amplifying effect."
The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor," according to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder.
A U.K. Foreign Ministry spokesperson said British officials were in contact with local authorities over the capsizing and were ready to provide consular support for Britons who were affected.

Ukraine Invasion Day 911: RU may have inadvertently laid the groundwork for UKR's incursion
Col. Gen. Alexander Lapin dissolved a border defense council earlier this year—just months before Ukrainian forces launched a successful counterattack on Russian soil.
Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations throughout the Kursk Oblast salient on August 21 and have made additional marginal advances.
Russian forces conducted a series of missile and drone strikes against Ukraine on the night of August 20 to 21.
Ukrainian Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk reported that Russian forces launched two Iskander-M or North Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles from Voronezh Oblast, a Kh-59/69 cruise missile from the airspace over Kursk Oblast, and 69 Shahed-136/131 drones from Kursk Oblastand Yeysk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Krasnodar Krai. [92] Oleshchuk stated that Ukrainian forces shot down one Kh-59/69 missile and 50 Shahed drones over Khmelnytskyi, Poltava, Cherkasy, Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kherson, Donetsk, Kirovohrad, Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts. Oleshchuk added that 16 Shahed drones did not reach their targets and likely fell due to Ukrainian electronic warfare (EW) suppression and that another Shahed drone flew from Chernihiv Oblast's airspace into Belgorod Oblast's airspace via Belarussian airspace. The Kyiv City Military Administration reported that Ukrainian forces destroyed up to a dozen drones near Kyiv City. [93] www.understandingwar.org/...
A Russian general who was recently appointed to a position in charge of border security may have inadvertently laid the groundwork for Ukraine’s successful incursion into the Kursk Oblast, according to a report. Earlier this year, Col. Gen. Alexander Lapin dissolved an interagency council in charge of border security, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The council brought together military officers with local and regional security, but Lapin argued that only the military had the resources to defend the border—and that other agencies need not be involved in the process. It's not the first blunder for Lapin. The general previously drew criticism for his role in the Russian retreat at Lyman—an early defeat for the Russian army at a strategic city in the Ukrainian region of Donbas. www.thedailybeast.com/… www.understandingwar.org/... Additional geolocated footage published on August 21 indicates that Ukrainian forces hold positions in forest areas east of Aleksandrovka (northeast of Koreveno and 33km from the international border). Geolocated footage published on August 21 indicates that Ukrainian forces have advanced into southern Russkaya Konopelka (east of Sudzha and 12km from the international border). Geolocated footage published on August 21 shows drone operators of Russia's 155th Naval Infantry Brigade striking Ukrainian forces in and around Vishnevka, confirming that Ukrainian forces have likely advanced into and beyond the settlement. Geolocated footage published on August 21 also shows that elements of the Russian 200th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade hold positions along the 38H-564 road east of Zhuravli (east of Koreveno and 21km from the international border)...indicating that Russian forces either recently retook these positions or that Ukrainian forces have not yet closed the small salient along the 38H-564 road near Zhuravli. A Russian milblogger claimed that a reinforced platoon-sized Ukrainian element unsuccessfully attacked from Vishnevka towards Komarovka. Another Russian milblogger claimed that Ukrainian forces conducted a platoon-sized mechanized attack towards Korenevo but were unsuccessful. Russian milbloggers continued to claim that Ukrainian forces are advancing north of Sudzha near Malaya Loknya & are encircling Russian forces in Martynovka. Elements of the Russian 810th Naval Infantry Brigade (Black Sea Fleet) are reportedly facing encirclement in Martynovka. Geolocated footage published on August 21 indicates that Ukrainian forces have advanced into southern Russkaya Konopelka (east of Sudzha and 12km from the international border). The Russian 810th Naval Infantry Brigade appears to be deployed particularly sporadically throughout the Kursk Oblast salient — various Russian sources have reported that its elements are operating as far north as the Kauchuk area and between Martynovka and Spalnoye.
STOCKHOLM – Since 2014, Russia has brazenly violated Ukraine’s territorial integrity with incursions, illegal annexations, and a full-scale invasion. And now, Ukraine is violating Russia’s territorial integrity with its own incursion into the Kursk region. There is, of course, a substantial difference between the two cases. The Russian Federation has officially, albeit illegally, absorbed Crimea and conquered territory in Ukraine’s Donbas region, and Vladimir Putin makes no secret of his intention to subjugate all of Ukraine. By contrast, Ukraine has made no territorial claims on any Russian land. Still, for Europeans, territorial integrity is key, and Ukraine’s counteroffensive has brought the issue back into focus. While countries may have different reasons for supporting Ukraine in the conflict, defending the principle of territorial integrity is a shared imperative. After all, most of Europe’s borders were drawn in blood, and allowing them to be redrawn now would invite even more bloodshed. For decades, the current borders have been sacrosanct, because everyone understands that territorial integrity is the foundation underpinning peace on a continent that, until 1945, had been ravaged by centuries of war. When the multinational, polyglot state of the Soviet Union broke up more than three decades ago, this principle was fundamental to achieving a mostly peaceful transition. In drafting the Belovezha Accords in December 1991, the leaders of key Soviet republics agreed that existing borders must be fully respected, even though many of them did not follow any ethnic or geographic logic. Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley might be the most obvious example, and a dangerous insurrection did erupt there three decades ago. Similarly, Crimea was a highly controversial territorial issue at the time. www.project-syndicate.org/... ? Key Takeaways: The Kremlin appears to have launched an intricate messaging campaign aimed at justifying to its domestic audience why Russia is prioritizing maintaining the initiative in eastern Ukraine over immediately expelling Ukrainian forces from Kursk Oblast. Putin notably appears to be demanding that Russia defeat Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk Oblast without sacrificing the stability of his regime, deprioritizing the offensive in eastern Ukraine, or firing his incompetent but loyal lieutenants. The results of such a strategy are too early to forecast. Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations throughout the Kursk Oblast salient on August 21 and have made additional marginal advances. Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Republic of Chechnya for the first time in 13 years on August 20, likely in an effort to shift domestic focus away from the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk Oblast and posture normalcy and stability. Recent US intelligence assessments highlight Ukraine's efforts to develop alternative and asymmetric capabilities in the face of Russian manpower and materiel advantages, as well as Ukraine's continued dependence on Western security assistance. Ukraine continues efforts to attrit Russia's air defense and aviation capabilities. Russian authorities may have attempted to block Telegram and other non-Russian internet communications services on August 21. The Russian government is reportedly supporting a bill that would allow Russian authorities to draw up administrative protocols against Russian citizens who violate Russian law while living aboard. Russian President Vladimir Putin and People's Republic of China (PRC) Premier Li Qiang discussed deepening bilateral economic and trade relations in Moscow on August 21. Russian forces recently advanced southeast of Pokrovsk, southwest of Donetsk City, and northeast of Robotyne. Russian occupation authorities continue to create Cossack organizations in occupied Ukraine, likely to build out Russia's military reserves and law enforcement bodies in occupied Ukraine.

The Kremlin appears to have launched an intricate messaging campaign aimed at justifying to its domestic audience why Russia is prioritizing maintaining the initiative in eastern Ukraine over immediately expelling Ukrainian forces from Kursk Oblast. Russian government sources close to the Russian Presidential Administration told Russian independent outlet Meduza that the Kremlin is actively trying to condition Russian society to accept the limited Ukrainian presence in Kursk Oblast as a “new normal” and downplay the significance of the incursion. [1] The sources noted that the Kremlin will use propaganda to encourage Russians to wait for Russian forces to retake these territories after an “inevitable” Ukrainian defeat in eastern Ukraine. The sources also added that the Kremlin is redirecting Russians’ concerns over Kursk Oblast by preoccupying domestic society with humanitarian assistance drives to assist the affected residents of Kursk Oblast and noted that the Kremlin decided against canceling the upcoming Kursk Oblast gubernatorial elections scheduled for September to minimize panic in the region. [2] The Russian Central Election Commission, however, decided to postpone local elections in the seven raions in Kursk Oblast that are impacted by the Ukrainian incursion due to security risks, and the Kremlin may have decided to maintain gubernatorial elections as scheduled to replace the interim Kursk Oblast Governor Alexei Smirnov, who has overseen much of the local Russian response to the incursion. [3] Meduza also highlighted Russian state media’s coverage of the incursion, which began increasingly portraying Kursk Oblast and its residents as supporting the Russian war effort in Ukraine, despite encountering some mild wartime disruptions to residents’ ordinary lives. [4] The Kremlin may be also attempting to weaponize state media's coverage of its months-long offensive in eastern Ukraine to advance its messaging campaign about the incursion. Russian state TV channels are notably covering Ukraine’s incursion in Kursk Oblast as a limited operation, while actively contrasting it with Russian advances in the Pokrovsk direction, which Russian media is painting as major victories.
