Stamford Yacht Club
Today the club is most noted for the Valeur-Jensen Stamford to Denmark Friendship Race, held in the Fall, and the annual Vineyard Race, held every Labor Day weekend since 1932. NSHOF has a video commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Vineyard Race in its Film Library.
Stories from Stamford Yacht Club
The Stamford Yacht Club is located in Stamford, Connecticut on Stamford Harbor, and was founded in 1890 at the home of William Lottimer. The Club’s earliest members were active people living in interesting times. The Merritt Parkway is, indeed, named after the second Vice Commodore, whose Commodore, Henry K. McHarg, built a railroad town in Texas that is still called Stamford.
Like hundreds of members who followed them, the founders preserved and enhanced the Club, both for their contemporaries and for generations to come. When commemorating fellow members of earlier generations, club membership works to not only express gratitude, but also gain a sense of personal responsibility as stewards between the Club’s last century and its next.

The Stamford Yacht Club
The Stamford Yacht Club was one of the many fine boating institutions in the city. The Club was founded on October 16, 1890 at the home of William Lottimer. The first race sailed at the club took place in August 1893. According to Yachts and Yachtsman of America, the race was open to sloops and cutters, 36 to 43 feet long. The course was from Cow's Buoy, off Shippan Point, to Matinnecock Point, then to Eaton's Neck and back, for a total of 25 miles. Kathleen, sailed by P.M. Hoyt of Stamford, was the winner.
“The yachting interests of Stamford have experienced remarkable development and expansion within the last few years, notably through the organization of the Stamford Yacht Club in the early spring of 1891. Its first important step, after the choice of officers and trustees was the purchase of a suitable location on the west side of Shippan Point, containing about four acres of land, on which to build its club house. This property was still further enlarged in the early summer of 1892 by purchase of the adjacent lot and cottage of Mr. Frank H. Hoyt. The main building, bathing house and driving sheds, together with a one-hundred-and-fifty-foot dock reaching low water at a solidly constructed crib pier, were put up in 1891, in time for the formal opening of the institution which took place on the 25th of July.” - Picturesque Stamford, 1892, in Marine Commerce and Yachting, pp. 205-214, writes about the Stamford Yacht Club

Very nice, when I went to go get my tennis racket and they were nice about letting me borrow one
Our dinner with a large group at the Stamford Yacht Club was preceded by some very tasty hors d'oeuvres, notably a memorably succulent shrimp teriyaki. Going straight downhill from there, the meal opened with a salad of baby field greens. It featured dried cherries, Stilton cheese and "spiced pecans" which seemed oddly more like nuggets of rock candy...pure bits of sugar containing no discernable pecans. The plainness of the entrée that followed, a small fillet of roasted branzino (about 4 1/2 ounces) was not enhanced by any tomato confit, tapenade, or braised spinach (as advertised). It was instead served "au naturel", atop a 2-oz. helping of undressed mashed potatoes and alongside 8 or 9 haricot verts, similarly unadorned. There were no seasonings or sauces on the fish either, which was somewhat overcooked and had a decidedly gummy texture. Something like hospital food. Meals cooked for a large crowd will never be superb but we've encountered many better outcomes than this. The somewhat small portions were undoubtedly right-sized for most people, as the limitless flow of hors d'oeuvres before dinner ensured there would be no one going hungry. The staff was helpful and attentive.
I booked our company Christmas party at the yacht club and it was absolutely beautiful... The food was great (despite not having time to eat, as I was running around most of the night)... we had Pecan Crusted Swordfish, penne a la vodka, and a stuffed chicken with tomato and prosciutto... The staff was helpful, and James helped give us the ideas and set up that made the party both intimate and fun. I would absolutely have another party at the Stamford Yacht Club.
Rude Rude Rude!!!!! I was there last weekend for a wedding and I could not believe how rude most of the staff was! From the manager to some of the servers, I felt like I was an unwanted guest. From a woman blatantly asking me if i needed a place to change because i wasn't wearing my tie yet, to the server who asked if i was done with my cocktail plates, I said no i'm working on them, and she said "well can you condense them because it looks bad." I said i'll get to it then she tried to do it for me! How rude! The food was pretty good and some of the servers were very nice and attentive, but no way in hell will I be going back.
In a nutshell. Worst ever. Taking the bride and groom out of the equation, the place needs a total transformation. The Cocktail hour. Not enough seats and spread out all over the place. People could not sit down. They had the food and the bar in a small room creating the perpetual line of waiting for what? Finger food. Ever try and eat with fingers for an hour. Food that clearly were not finger food. The First barrage of stupid was asking people, mostly old timers to hunt for a chair that could barely support the weight of a person, you know the party rent all white plastic that was not stable. Then the standing in the mud. Oh yes what a charm. people who went out and bought new shoes and or lady's with their high heels sinking into the sod that was watered all day. About a half hour into the cocktail hour people went back to their cars to get flip flops not to stand in the mud. Then the trek up what is wood slippery stairs with wet feet. At one point people just got sick of waiting on line for what was going to be crums of this and that. The service was pretty bad. Scowls on the faces of the staff all night. Poor service, don't ask of anything otherwise they get mad at you like can i have some 1/2 & 1/2 or this now cold cup of coffee. OR can i have some water. The food for dinner was the appetizer, small portions, poorly cooked meat. I sat at table where the consensus was, hey want to get some McDonalds as we were all hungry. The service , the amount and the quality of the food was so bad that we just felt silly for being there. The worst weeding I ever attended. From the service, the the food then the seating arrangements and the lack of feeling like we were welcome by the staff, stay ten miles away from the place. Almost cartoonish bad.

Recent weddings and engagements across Boston and New England. Tips for making your day one of a kind, without the stress.
Engagements

When Bridget and Charlie got engaged, they knew exactly where in New England they wanted to get married. Charlie’s family have been longtime members at the Stamford Yacht Club, so a Connecticut wedding there was a no brainer.
A Big Greek Connecticut Wedding
On our first phone call, Bridget described how Charlie comes from a big Greek family and how the wedding might be just like the movie — minus the roasting pig on the front lawn. Like all big Greek weddings, this one happened in the Greek Orthodox church that Charlie’s family had also been longtime members of. Charlie’s Uncle would be their Koumbaro — which, in Greek literally translates to “sponsor”. In practice, he’d play a part in the ceremony and help to bind the marriage.
At their reception, Bridget and Charlie would enter for their first dance. This would, of course, being followed by Greek dancing to officially kick the night off!
Their Wedding Design and Vision
Family and sentimental value aside, the Stamford Yacht Club is the perfect setting for what Bridget imagined. She wanted coastal chic, without everything feeling too preppy. The yacht club is situated right along the Connecticut coastline, where Bridget and Charlie would do their first look and enjoy their sunset cocktail hour with guests later in the evening.
Bridget and Charlie used the yacht club’s property to create a classic but modern wedding design. Small touches, like Bridget’s grandmother’s pearl necklace added to their classic New England style; while the color palette played into a more modern approach to the overall design. They decided on a jewel-tone color scheme, with the bridesmaids wearing a mix of navy, Bordeaux red, emerald green, and mustard yellow. The group was told to select a floor-length dress in their assigned color, but in any style of their choosing!
Guests would be welcomed to the yacht club lawn following the ceremony — the raw bar, of course, was a focal point along with their signature cocktail drinks. Following yacht club tradition, a cannon would be set off exactly at sunset and guests would be welcomed inside to enjoy dinner and dancing. Hues of blue and gold were used to complement the interior decor of the yacht club — also tying back into the overall jewel-tone color scheme. Sailboat escort cards and nautical rope knot table numbers all subtly added to the coastal CT wedding theme.
Full Wedding Weekend Coverage
With family and friends traveling to the wedding from all over the country, I helped Bridget and Charlie to capture the full wedding weekend! Beginning with their rehearsal, I was able to meet both of their families and photograph the group for their full run-through of the ceremony. The rehearsal is always a fun thing to see — personalities always come out without a crowd in the pews and everyone is pretty excited. Being there also allowed me to see the specific church setup and plan for how to photograph it the next day — where my second photographer and I would stand to capture various important moments of the ceremony; how I would light the room.
Following the rehearsal itself, I joined the families for the rehearsal dinner at The Water’s Edge at Giovanni’s . Toasts were given, wedding party gifts exchanged, and the group celebrated all that was to come the following day.
