Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Sunflower is a Young 43, designed by the well known and respected NZ designer, Jim Young.

The Young 43’s were designed and built in Auckland, NZ. They were designed as a “Luxury Cruising Boat”, by Jim Young, although they were never mass produced, each one was customised to the owners specs, whilst retaining the main excellent basic design features. Young 43’s have circumnavigated many  times, and we have met several in our travels. They are serious blue water cruising boats.

We are only the 4th owners and have had the pleasure of calling Sunflower our permanent home since 2003. We have sailed many thousands of miles in her, always safely and snugly regardless of   weather or sea conditions. Like her previous owners we have kept her in tip top condition and regularly upgraded her electronics to the  current state of the art options. We regard good food as a necessity whether at sea or on shore, so Sunflower’s galley has been upgraded with Corian tops and sinks as well as a top of the range stove. Along with a microwave and bread maker there is a large freezer and fridge which allows for storage of 3 months worth of meats and meals for 2 people.

Storage on board is exceptional with not a spare inch wasted and most of it easily accessible. Sunflower has been set up as a comfortable home for 2 people although we have regularly hosted guests in the double V berth   which has it’s own dressing area and head. We enjoy our comfort so there is a slim line TV which folds up against the ceiling when not in use, we have Carframo fans in each bedroom, the forward head and 2 in the living area, there are also a couple of portables which plug into 12 volt sockets if extra cooling is required in the cockpit. There is a twin tub washing   machine on board which stows comfortably in the ‘tunnel’ between the main salon and master bedroom in the rear. It is very lightweight and is easily moved in to the main shower area for use. A 50 litre per hour Echotec water maker ensures no rationing of shower or any water! A double filtration system means our drinking water tastes better than most bottled water.

Construction is very solid with fibre glass below the waterline and balsa core above the waterline. The balsa core provides excellent sound and temperature insulation. There is a waterproof crash bulkhead at the bow.

The centre cockpit design features an original factory- built hard dodger with fully enclosed canvas bimini. The fully enclosed cockpit means extra comfort while under way and on anchor. There is no need to wear wet- weather gear while sailing as all sail handling is done from within the cockpit. An electric winch to makes handling of the boom furling main and head sail easy. The fully enclosed cockpit also makes an extra room on anchor, during wet weather etc. As well as being very safe with it’s high combing, the centre cockpit design also allows very easy access to both sides of the engine.

In 2014 the hull was taken back to the gel coat, primed and then painted with 6 coats of International 2 part paint. Below the waterline all old anti fouling was removed back to the gel coat, (no osmosis found) sealed, primed and 2 coats of Seahawk anti fouling applied. Also the teal deck   stripe was repainted with 2 part paint.

There is an extensive list of spares and extra equipment on the separate page.

Sunflower is being sold as a fully equipped, world cruising home. We will leave all galley equipment, electronics and linens   as required. Sunflower is ideally located in Fethiye Turkey. There are lovely sheltered cruising grounds in which to familiarise yourself with your new boat then you have the whole Med at your disposal   to begin your cruising adventures.

As we have a villa here in Turkey, we can assist with your inspection visit and move onto the boat.

Brochure

If you're in the market for an extremely capable blue water cruiser, with the ability to go around the world in comfort, then this is the boat for you. The Young Sun is a heavily built world cruiser easily sailed by two persons, and performs surprisingly well in light air and is outstanding in heavy weather. This is a serious cutter-rig that is a true blue water cruiser. With her combination of molded fiberglass hull and magnificent teak, she is a classic double ender that will take her new owners anywhere in the world.

The knowledgeable owner is an extremely experienced sailor who spent 2 years preparing the vessel for a voyage to New Zealand and beyond. Following a 4000 mile mostly solo shakedown cruise from Ft Lauderdale to the Eastern Caribbean, then to Cartagena, San Blas, as well as several Panamanian ports, he returned singlehanded to Ft Lauderdale which was a 12 day non-stop 1400 mile journey. Upon his return, the 78 yr old owner has decided this vessel is a bit too much for his ability to singlehand at his age, and has reluctantly put her on the market!.

  • Aluminum Mast and new standing rigging (replaced original wooden mast and rigging)
  • 88 HP Yanmar (1998)
