The RYA Yachtmaster Theory course (also referred to as the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory Course) is an in-depth course for experienced skippers. The course looks in detail at all aspects of coastal navigation and ensures that you have the necessary navigation skills to be able to undertake complex passages and entries into more challenging ports and harbours.
Course Duration
6 days from 9am to 5pm.
Instructor – student ratio
4 – 6 students per Instructor
Prior experience
This is the top level RYA navigation theory course for either those looking to work commercially or experienced leisure users. The entry requirement is the RYA Dayskipper Theory course. If you do not hold this qualification then we would seek reassurance from speaking to you that you have a commensurate level of experience.
What do I get with the course?
You get a full RYA Yachtmaster Theory Course pack which includes course notes and RYA Training Charts. The workbooks that you complete as the course proceeds are also yours allowing you to practice again after the course if you wish. You also get a course completion certificate upon successfully passing the end of course tests.
Minimum Age
Whilst there is no minimum age for this course realistically we’d suggest 16 is probably the youngest for an individual to attend this course.
Course cost
The course costs £450.
Each price quoted in the ‘Key Course Details’ section above is the price per head for 1 person, for 2 persons the per head cost reduces by 2.5% and for three people by 5%. The price shown is inclusive of VAT.
Is there an end of course assessment?
Yes there is. On the final day of the course you will sit two papers – one focuses on the collision regulations and the other on the navigation aspects of the course.
The course though addresses everything that comes up in the papers and you will have worked through many examples of similar questions leading up to the final day.
What’s best – doing the course online or in the classroom?
In all honesty if you can afford the time to come to us and do the course in the classroom in our opinion this is by far the best way. Whilst the online course is excellent what you really miss out on is the real hands on experience of our instructors who have many years of experience afloat and add to the syllabus to maximise the benefit of the course and your investment in it.
However if you want to do the course away from the classroom, or of course, simply cannot afford the time to be in the classroom for that length of time then the online course is great.
I’m a sailor – is this course valid for me too?
Absolutely. The RYA Yachtmaster Theory course has been written to be completely relevant to both powerboats and those boating under sail. Our instructors use both powerboats and sail (they just love the water!) so are equally at home at both speeds of travel and are totally at ease with the issues specific to sailing boats.
Why choose Powerboat Training UK for your Yachtmaster Theory course?
The simple answer is our instructors. Our instructors have current, real hands on experience of helming fast and slower power driven vessels and vessels on passage under sail all over the world and their experience of using the navigation techniques that this course covers is a key component of what makes this a great course for everyone who gets afloat.
As a professional full time school our classrooms are well equipped and dedicated to the running of these courses so have all of the materials expected so that we can run first rate courses.
Over the 5 days that this course lasts you will develop your existing understanding of navigation and chartwork onto a higher level giving you the skills to plan more complex coastal passages and enter ports and harbours wherever in the world you find yourself boating.
The course is aimed at those who already have the RYA Dayskipper Theory course (or a comparable level of knowledge) and whilst covering a syllabus very similar to the Dayskipper Theory syllabus does so in far more detail and to a far greater depth.
The syllabus covers:
At the end of the course there is an exam which covers all of the above areas. Success in the exam leads to the award of your course certificate
You must already have RYA Dayskipper Theory or a comparable level of knowledge to attend this course. Those possessing the Dayskipper Theory course already are advised to spend a few hours ‘brushing up’ ahead of attending in order they can make the most of the course. Those not possessing the qualification are asked to chat through their existing experience with us ahead of booking.
The RYA Yachtmaster Theory course is an essential course for those working commercially and keen to move up the qualification ladder but also for those seeking to enter the commercial world. Leisure users also find that the course is a perfect way to ensure they have the skills to make extended coastal passages and channel crossings.
Some examples of the sorts of people that have attended this course include:
If you have a large group to train….
For yacht clubs and other organisations requiring group training we are happy to train in large groups and are happy to travel throughout the UK. We have run in-house courses for various government, military and Fire & Rescue services during the last 12 months.
Please contact us to discuss this option and the associated costs – which may be far less per head than our standard rates depending on the numbers being trained.

The RYA Yachtmaster® Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers. It is a well known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper. Unlike other qualifications in the cruising programme, there is no formal training course to become an RYA Yachtmaster. Instead, provided you have sufficient experience, certification and seatime, you can put yourself forward for an exam to test your skills and knowledge. There are a number of RYA navigation courses that will help you prepare for your exam. Many RYA Yachtmaster candidates also choose to book themselves into an RYA training centre for some specialised exam preparation training, but this is not compulsory.
You are capable of coastal passages
You are competent to undertake passages up to 150 miles offshore
You have the knowledge and experience to sail worldwide
The Coastal and Offshore exams are practical tests afloat, and the Ocean is an oral exam. Find out more about qualifying passages, exam fees and how to book.

Full details of the exam syllabus and requirements are shown in the RYA Yachtmaster Scheme Syllabus and Logbook (G158) available from the webshop (see right).
RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams can be taken under sail or power and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly. The candidate or a training centre provides the boat and the RYA provides an examiner. Note: All qualifying sea time and passages must be gained on vessels appropriate to the type of exam i.e. gained in sailing vessels for a sail exam and power vessels for a power exam.
There is no formal training course leading up to the exam, but those who have not previously taken RYA courses often find it useful to book themselves in for some informal training at an RYA centre prior to their exam. This training can be tailor-made to your specific needs and helps to fill any gaps in your knowledge that may become apparent.
The exam will include an assessment of your skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of the IRPCS, meteorology and signals.
Documented minimum sea time completed on a seagoing sailing or motor yacht (as appropriate) in the last 10 years: which may be reduced to 25 days if the candidate already holds an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence ; ; , which may be reduced to 1250 miles if the candidate already holds an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence if the candidate already holds an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence
At least half the qualifying sea time should be gained in tidal waters and on vessels less than 24m LOA, and all seatime must be on vessels of the same discipline as the exam to be taken, i.e. sail or power. Contact if your sea time is on a yacht greater than 24m and 500gt. For example, an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Sail wishing to be examined for RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Power | |

You may use your own boat or a boat that you have chartered or borrowed. You will be responsible for ensuring the boat is seaworthy and suitable for the area in which the exam takes place and equipped as shown below.
The boat used must be between 7m and 18m (LOA) and be in sound, seaworthy condition, equipped to the standard set out in the RYA Boat Safety Handbook 2nd Edition (code G103). The boat must be equipped with a full up to date set of charts and navigational publications along with working instruments and either plotter or GPS. In addition to the candidate there should be two crew on board as the examiner will not take part in the management of the boat during the exam.
There may be vessels that will meet the guidelines outlined above but by virtue of their layout, construction, handling characteristics or other factors may be unsuitable for use for an RYA Yachtmaster Practical examination. The RYA reserves the right to refuse an exam on a vessel that, in the view of the RYA Chief Examiner, will not allow the examiner to conduct an examination to the standard required by the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Qualification Panel.
Before you book your exam please check that you:
If you need your Certificate of Competence in order to work on board a commercial craft subject the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed .

Coronation Street fans were left fearing for the character's future as they predict danger is on the way
In Monday's episode of Coronation Street, ITV viewers saw Beth Tinker, played by Lisa George, lurking around the precinct after discovering Sid was selling their counterfeit t-shirts and pocketing the profits.
However, she was taken aback when Kit Green approached the shady businessman. Deciding to document the situation, she later confronted Kit on the street.
Initially, he feigned ignorance until she showed him the video. Eventually, she demanded he pay over £400 by the next day, promising to delete the footage in return, reports the Express .
However, it appeared Kit had a scheme to outsmart Beth, by coaxing her son into confessing his darkest secret. Later, Kit admitted to PC Tinker, played by Colson Smith, that he'd done something compromising his integrity as a police officer.

Despite confessing he doesn't feel fit for the force, Craig tried to reassure him he was an ideal member. Unbeknown to him, Kit was attempting to extract information from him, aware that he's keeping a sinister secret.
Playing with his feelings, Kit suggested that only fellow officers could understand their predicament, hoping to prompt Craig to disclose his dark past. Coronation Street fans will know that PC Tinker once assisted ex-Faye Windass and Emma Brooker in covering up the murder of an elderly man, a secret he's kept to himself.
As Kit gets closer to Craig, could he convince him to reveal everything unaware his so-called mate will turn them against him? Viewers immediately hit Twitter with their thoughts on the unfolding drama, many worrying over Beth and Craig's fate.
One user expressed their anxiety, tweeting: "Beth blackmailing Kit which could end badly..." Another voiced their opinion: "Clueless Beth is out of her depth with Kit."
A third chimed in with a foreboding comment: "#Corrie kit digging a hole for Beth's body..." Another viewer said: "Think he's gonna bump off Beth he's dodgy!!"
An alarmed fan, commenting on Kit's influence over Craig, posted: "FFS Craig silly idiot." Another viewer wrote: "So Kit is playing insecure copper with Craig and he'll go on to play hardball with Beth I bet! Idiots."
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
Manchester united slumped to their first premier league defeat of the season on saturday as they lost 2-1 to brighton and hove albion.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Manchester United's captain Bruno Fernandes was laughing at Erik ten Hag after being substituted in the defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Reds found themselves 1-0 down at the interval after Danny Welbeck tapped home from close range to give the hosts the lead. At half-time, it was clear something needed to change with Joshua Zirkzee being introduced to allow Fernandes to drop deeper into his preferred No.10 role.
United's change had the desired effect on the hour mark as Amad's deflected strike brought the visitors level. Alejandro Garnacho thought he had made it 2-1 shortly afterwards but his goal was ruled out for offside after an agonising touch by the offside Zirkzee on the line.

Instead of pushing for the winner in the final ten minutes, Ten Hag chose to try and consolidate the point as Scott McTominay was introduced for Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder looked unimpressed by the decision as he left the field and ultimately it would backfire.
Brighton won the game with the last chance of the game as Joao Pedro headed home unmarked at the back stick to win it for the Seagulls. Following the match, Wright told his podcast Wrighty’s House that he saw Fernandes do something that would likely unimpress his manager.
"A lot of things happened in that game that I just couldn’t understand or see happening," the former Match of the Day pundit said. "Like I can’t understand why he took Bruno off and went so defensive.
"Why are you taking him off? When he ran off, he was actually smiling and laughing. He was like: 'What the f***? I can't believe this guy.
"That’s the vibe I got from it. If anyone is going to win a game for you it’s Bruno Fernandes."
Ten Hag has shown a lot of trust in Fernandes since arriving at Old Trafford . The midfielder was named captain of United in the manager's second season and recently signed a new lucrative deal at the club.
