Anyone heard of Homer, Virgil, Ulysses, Socrates or Troy?

Greece Luxury Yacht Charter Hot Spots

As a Greece yacht charter covers so much territory. Let’s have a brief look at the main areas to charter your yacht. The first four are the main Greece charter areas: the Ionian Islands, the Aegean & Sporades, the Cyclades and last but not least the Dodecanese.

Each Ionian Island in Greece holds a different charisma and charm for sailing yacht charters vacations. The Islands that you can explore on your yacht charter include Eptanisa (The Seven Islands): Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakinthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxi and Kythera. Some highlights include the busy touristy but beautiful Corfu as well as the Smugglers Cove. It can only be accessed by sea at Zakinthos and is one of the most famous and stunning beaches in Greece. The Blue Grotto is another spectacle of the ocean.

Greece’s Aegean Islands are less visited than the Cyclades, which makes them the perfect place for a less crowded yacht charter holiday, particularly if you’re interested in art, culture and history and also the fertile countryside is simply beautiful. Some of the islands include Samos, Lesvos and Samothraki. The Northern Sporades on the eastern side of Greece are also a very popular yacht charter area with some of the prettiest, thickly wooded, islands in the Mediterranean.

The Cyclades offer both culture and the offer of hedonistic pursuits. There are ancient sites, Byzantine castles, museums and lively nightlife, shopping, dining, and of course the famous beaches. Some hot spots in this area include Mykonos, Delos, Santorini, Sikinos, Paros and Naxos, and Serifos.

The Dodecanese is the most southerly group of islands in the Southern Sporades. The group includes the 14 larger islands of Lipsi, Patmos, Leros, Kalymnos, Kos, Astypalea, Nisyros, Symi, Tilos, Rhodes, Khalki, Karpathos and Kasos, together with some 40 smaller islets and rocks; plenty to see and explore on your yacht charter.

Corfu is by far the largest island of the Eptanisa ("Seven Islands") in the Ionian Sea, located on Greece's far western coast. It combines a populous east coast with plenty of beaches and a dramatic west coast where few tourists go to cliff-faced inlets and coastlines. Corfu is extremely busy in the 'high-season', best time to visit Corfu on your yacht charter is in May or June.

Athens, the capital of Greece, is a captivating destination to be visited on any Greece yacht charter itinerary, which boasts of important history spanning around 3,400 years. Athens yacht charter is a fantastic way to discover the numerous treasures of this city while enjoying the luxury and unparalleled comfort of your preferred Athens charter yacht. Over the years Athens was occupied by many conquerors who built the many impressive monuments gracing this fascinating city. For more information about Athens follow this link.

Cephalonia is the most mountainous of the Ionian Islands and a perfect place for hiking amidst breathtaking views. The tallest mountain, Mount Enose of 5,340 feet is covered with the Kefallonian fir trees. On your yacht charter in Cephalonia you could also visit the Gentilini winery or that of Calligas, or experience great nightlife at Assos, with its fantastic panoramic views.

Zakinthos' real fame today lies in the native nestling grounds of the endangered loggerhead turtle, however it has also caused clashes between the irate environmentalists and villagers bent on developing the turtles' beach-front nesting ground. The main beach at Laganas is to be avoided as one of the main turtle nesting grounds. However, visiting Zakinthos while chartering a yacht you could go and see the Byzantine Museum in town for examples of the Zakinthian school of icon painting. From here you could sail around to Volimes for a look at the beautiful Blue Grotto.

Visiting Ithaca or Ithaki on you charter yacht you will come across rich deep-blue bays and mountains of flowers and trees. This patriarchal home of Odysseus is filled with mythology of Odysseus from a castle named after him to a cave where he is said to have hidden the treasures of the Phaiakes.

Paros, located south of Mykonos, is another paradise for beautiful, fine-sand beaches. This charming little port is full of fishermen's houses and Athenian retreats. Like Mykonos, Paros is a centre of world famous windsurfing championships. Travel inland to the South for the Valley of the Butterflies which pulsates with thousands of fluttering wings in summer. For a quiet anchorage, stay at the sister island Antiparos, where there are many beaches, and an amazing cave called Spileon.

Approaching Santorini aboard your luxury yacht, you will be greeted by sheer, striated cliffs and white cubist villages perched at the summit. Enjoy a drink and a gorgeous Santorini sunset overlooking a seamless custard bay where the volcano lies dormant. Drop anchor on the easily accessible east coast for a swim at black volcanic-sand beaches and unbeatable deep-sea diving. Don't miss Santorini's superb archaeological sites, including Ancient Thira, a Doric city- fortress from the 9th century B.C. high on a southern coastal promontory, and farther south, fascinating on-going excavations at Akrotiri, which is an even earlier Minoan settlement.

Rhodes' main town Mandraki is full of shops, tourists and tourist paraphernalia. It is advisable to visit in early morning hours for its Medieval citadel built by the Knights of St. John, an order of Crusaders who ruled here for 213 years. In the old city, visit the memorable Byzantine Museum and the Mosque of Suleiman, subsequent conqueror of Rhodes. Inland, visit the lovely Valley of the Butterflies in summer, and Archangelos, the island's largest village, famous for soft leather goods and pottery.

Poros is well-known for its "loukoumades", deep-fried batter cakes served hot with ribbons of honey. But it's also known for charming small streets, a long, impressive quay and the verdant lemon tree forests on the mainland across the narrow channel that separates the two.

Hydra is a sea captains' island. It was mentioned in the writings of Herodotus as early as the 5th century B.C., but a relatively recent history as a boat-building center from the 17th century on made it an island of note. Since the 1960s, its winding, picturesque streets have attracted jet-setters and well-to-do international hippies. Take a walk up these charming streets, climbing far up to catch a glimpse of superbly renovated old Greek houses. Later, descend to the port for some of the best restaurants on any Greek island.

Spetses, a very small island, is likely the favourite site for affluent Athenians to build their modern weekend houses. But this island also has the distinguished good luck to be the birthplace of Bouboulina, fighting heroine of the 1822 War of Independence from the Ottoman Turks. Take a small trip from Dapia to the Bekiri cave on the west coast and to the south, sail past shipowner Stavros Niarchos' private islet Spetsopoula.

Kea is lovely, quiet and traditional. It is like going to the most remote islands in the Aegean. In the vilage of Ioulis you will come across a fantastic labyrinth of white Cycladic houses perched on the side of a mountain with a great main square.

Heading to Mykonos on you Greek yacht charter vacation you will encounter one of the most expensive Greek islands, with its countless resorts and its many, many good restaurants and bars. Mykonos is popular for the glamour of its nightlife which has been this barren island's chief attraction. Arriving here, anchor outside Mykonos Town's "Little Venice" with its row of waterfront cafes over-looking the water, and visit the Folklore Museum and the Archeological Museum at both ends of the quay. Shop by day or take in one of Mykonos' extravagant bars for a sunset drink.

A 'must' on any Cyclades Yacht Charter is the tiny, windswept Delos, also known as Apollo's birthplace. It was also the centre of the pan-Greek Delian League which the city-state of Athens grouped around itself for defence purposes. For 1000 years, the sacred island of Delos also hosted the Delian Festival, which until the 4th century B.C. was the greatest in Greece. During this period, Delos was a free port and nearly the entire Levant traded and probably banked here under the protection of shrines erected to their various deities and religions. The remains of this greatness are vast and impressive.

Greece also boasts magnificent natural beauty. The stunning aqua or dark blue waters and the faultless blue skies are a draw card for sailing yacht charter vacations as well as luxury motor yachts. Greece is still one of the most sought-after yacht charter areas in the Mediterranean, be it luxury crewed yacht charter or bare boat yacht charter, due to the huge number of things to see and do and the relative close proximity of everything by water.

Perhaps it’s the sexy sophistication of Mykonos, the music and dance of Zorba and the timeless romance of Santorini that attracts Greece’s shores. The Greek Islands are an intense blend of past the present, old and new. The Greeks are strong in their traditions and beliefs. Widows dressed in black can stare accusingly at the scantily dressed tourists, yet moments later, invite you in as welcomed guests. Bustling taverns and modern discos entertain the young and young at heart.

The Greek hospitality is unchallenged. A sailing yacht vacation or a power boat charter is a great way to experience all the Greek Islands have to offer. There is also increasing demand for luxury yacht charter and superyacht charter in Greece. After the sunset you can relax in your charter yacht’s cockpit sipping on Greek wine, Dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves) and Tzatziki whilst listening to the soothing sounds of Bouzouki music drifting from a little harbour village.

Greece Luxury Yacht Charter Tips

With its many amazing beaches, beautiful clear waters and fantastic bars, it’s not surprising many visitors head for Greece every year. Here’s some advice if you’re planning a yacht charter vacation this summer.

1. Choose the right time to visit Greece

Greece’s holiday season is quite long starting in May and finishing in mid-October. If you visit before or after these months, there aren’t so many people around especially on the more popular islands. Mykonos for example doesn’t have many visitors in May so the nightlife isn’t as vibrant than in July or August. If, however you love relaxing in the sun and prefer a quieter vacation, avoid these two months.

2. Take the weather into consideration when planning your holiday

Always check the weather when you decide to take a yacht charter holiday in Greece. It’s usually warm in the early and late season although the sea temperature is a little cooler in early summer. December brings colder weather and cold waters so swimming is out unless you don’t mind being a bit on the chilly side. This month late in the year on the other hand is a good time if you wish to see the culture and history of Greece as it’s fairly quiet. Most yacht owners and charterers prefer to visit the Greek Islands between May and early October, so expect busier times when choosing to sail during these two months.

3. Pack a large suitcase

With around 2,000 Greek islands to choose from it’s a good idea to do a little research about the island or islands you intend visiting - see above. There are historical islands, islands that are sophisticated and islands that are totally uninhabited. You won’t need a huge suitcase of clothes if you’re going to an island that’s underpopulated and you just plan to swim, sunbathe or eat on board your superyacht. All you will need are shorts, T-Shirts and swimming costumes.

However, if you decide to visit islands such as Rhodes, Paros or Mykonos you may need a large suitcase. Dining out in smart restaurants, dancing the night away in clubs or wanting to be part of the jet set means you will probably want many changes of wardrobe. Pack luggage accordingly, taking casual along with elegant clothes to suit all occasions.

4. Throw away the guide book

A guide book isn’t really that necessary if you’re heading to the Aegean Sea on a superyacht charter. Islands in this region are close together and there’s plenty of information elsewhere. With so much info on so many places, it’s an impossible task to read it all so maybe a short summary is the best bet about each place you intend to visit.

Get a general idea of accessibility to certain islands, make sure you can moor in the dock and find out the size of the port. Do a little homework about the nightlife, attractions and the types of beaches to expect. You can then work out an itinerary of the island you prefer to spend time on and where to go, as well as what to see once you’re there.

How about reading some of the more notable books about Greece? The Story of Ulysses or Odysseus, the King of Itheca or Homer’s Odyssey make interesting subjects to get you into the swing of this beautiful country.

The Charter Season & Climate

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Greece yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have strong Meltemi winds blowing frequently. This is also the high season as far as numbers go. The best time to charter a yacht is probably either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are the most comfortable, the wind lighter (yet reliable) and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive or have just left in their largest numbers.

Greece Yacht Charter Enquiry

Dear Josh, I was just about to write you one word "WOW!!!"Thank you very very much! Your recommendation is now becoming a brand :-) I can now blindly trust your advice :-) I loved the boat. It is in excellent condition. It is rather big, but cozy. We had all the chances for interactive sailing and for the discreet leisure time. We hardly ever went anywhere out of the upper deck, because it was so lovely! The master bedroom was perfect. The idea with two bathrooms is great! I loved the crew. Everyone was welcoming, ready to help and in general they were very pleasant people! Especially the captain and his senior assistant Tasos. We felt as if we were hosted by the family of old friends. Despite the short trip, they shown us lovely places to swim, advised on the island hiking, entertained us with the tender/toys. Food. Majestic! It was the first try for the new chef on Gitana. And he exceeded any expectation! Quality, quantity, the table service ...were impeccable. Your wines arrangement worked very well too! Sailing. We had just two chances to open full sails. But it was great! Otherwise the motor was perfectly sufficient. The boat was remarkably stable while on the go. So, our last minute booking turned out to be a fantastic adventure! Thank you very much! I am glad that you were there to help with this difficult booking. Really appreciated! S/Y GITANA / Athens, Greece / Oct 2

Athens, the capital of Greece and a crucial hub for human culture and knowledge

History buffs will be in awe at Greece’s myriad of other ancient ruins and treasures during a Greece yacht rental. Home to the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the hilltop citadel, and a variety of other precious fortunes, Athens, on mainland Greece, is the capital and veritable birthplace of the country.

Here, the tales of Grecian heroes and epic battles against the prevailing gods were born. The city is also claimed to be the birthplace of Western civilization. As you wander through the streets of antiquity, take in the history that abounds, enjoying and exploring every moment. Athens isn’t just old-world, however, as the city has grown to a more cosmopolitan section. You can plan to spend a day ashore in the Psiri district of Athens, a trendy spot to shop, dine, and enjoy a night on the town. Afterward, head back to the comfort of your yacht for a nightcap, followed by a restful sleep in your beautifully appointed stateroom.

Exploring Poros and the Peloponnese on a Greek journey

Just south of Athens, you will find Poros, a small pair of islands in the Saronic Gulf. This archipelago is easily accessible from the mainland and is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enter into a world of pure perfection with our Greece yacht charters cruising the ionian sea. Despite its size, only 31 square kilometers, Poros is home to many irresistible beaches, fascinating archeological sites — including the Sanctuary of Poseidon — and a picturesque little town that will make you feel like you’re in a storybook. The laid-back atmosphere combined with lively tavernas makes Poros a must-visit while on a luxury boat rental to Greece. Don’t skip a stop in Peloponnese, a stunning region in south Greece and an incredible location to explore and admire. There you will find ancient relics and ruins amongst ancient Olympia, where the first Olympics were held in honor of Zeus.

Thessaloniki is widely renowned as the cultural capital of Greece. Situated in Macedonia, the city is heaving with history. Ancient Byzantine walls surround the city and protect its museums, galleries and cultural enclaves. Foodies will appreciate the abundance of incredible restaurants found in Thessaloniki, where you can indulge in fantastic cultural delights and delicacies. Featuring the most incredible Grecian-style fare, diners will be delighted by the options available. Just south of Thessaloniki is the Halkidiki region, which is famous for its incredible sweeping views and beautiful beaches. Have breakfast aboard your luxury yacht in the Aegean Sea, then spend your day lazing on the sand and enjoying lively beachclubs, nightclubs and bars in the evening.

What's better, a motor yacht charter or a sailing yacht charter in Greece?

Whether you charter a motor yacht or sailing yacht in Greece depends on your preferences.

Motor yachts are roomier, so you may prefer a motor yacht if you want a luxurious sailing experience with plenty of space and amenities.

If you are looking for an adventure and want to truly experience the Greek coastlines, then a sailing yacht is the right choice. Sailing vacations have advantages over a holiday aboard a luxury motor yacht, such as lower fuel costs and quieter cruising. Sailing yachts are also the right choice for those wishing to enjoy the sheer thrill of harnessing the power of Mother Nature.

Ultimately, it all comes down to your personal boating preferences and if you desire the comfort and convenience of a motor boat. Whether you want to island hop the Greek Islands aboard a luxury motor yacht or sailing vessel, Northrop & Johnson can connect you with your ideal crewed superyacht. Contact our team today.

Which islands in Greece have their own airports?

What is the best time to cruise the greek islands.

The best time to enjoy a cruise aboard a luxury yacht in the Greek islands is spring – April to June – summer months, and fall – September to October. These months are less busy than the peak months of summer, July and August, yet the weather is still warm, and there is little chance of rain.

The sea temperature is at its warmest during September and October, having been warmed by the summer sun, making these months ideal for those wanting to maximize time on the water and make use of their yacht’s tenders and water toys. The winter months in Greece are cooler, with a much higher chance of rain, so they are the least popular months for a Greek yacht charter.

What's the wind like in Greece, and is it good for sailing?

The wind in Greece is legendary. Known as The Meltemi, or the Etesian wind, it blows from the end of June through to the end of August. This dry northern wind blows mainly in the afternoons, which means that most motor yachts will move in the morning, while sailing yachts will harness the wind in the afternoon, when it is typically at its strongest, providing truly spectacular sailing conditions. The Meltemi only affects island groups in the Aegean Sea, not those in the Ionian Sea, which is too far west. Yacht captains boast in-depth knowledge coupled with state-of-the-art cruising and navigational technology, ensuring charterers are kept safe at all times and enjoy a comfortable cruise. They will also be able to adapt itineraries if needed.

What are the best groups to go on a yacht charter in Greece?

Multiple groups can enjoy a yacht rental in Greece; however, Greece is an in-demand destination for  families . This is because the many islands of Greece offer something for everyone, ensuring amazing itineraries that will suit everyone in your group. The charter specialists at Northrop & Johnson boast in-depth knowledge of Greece and the Saronic Gulf and can tailor itineraries and experiences to meet your group’s needs.

Is a yacht rental in Greece good for older people?

Absolutely, luxury yacht charters are accessible for all, with  itineraries  and  experiences  tailored to meet the needs of all age groups. Greece offers fantastic experiences ideally suited to more mature charterers, including world-class museums and fascinating ancient ruins and historical sites, many of which are UNESCO-listed sites. Additionally, Northrop & Johnson boasts a superb fleet of  accessible yachts , ideal for those with mobility issues. An accessible yacht will feature wider passageways, providing ease of access for wheelchair users, elevators to all decks, easy-access shower facilities, larger gangways, and strategically placed handrails throughout the vessel. Contact our charter specialists today if you want to visit Greece aboard a luxury crewed yacht.

What water sports equipment should I ask for to cruise the Greek Islands?

Greece’s crystal-clear blue waters make it the perfect destination for making the most of your time on the water. Many luxury yachts for charter boast a fantastic selection of  water toys . Typical water toys include snorkeling, scuba diving equipment, Jet Skis, water skis, kayaks, standup paddleboards, and inflatables. Many yachts will also boast a  tender , making accessing small marinas, coves, and beaches effortless. No matter what water toys you desire when cruising the Greek islands, the team at Northrop & Johnson can help.

Who is going to look after me in Greece?

On a luxury yacht charter, you will be looked after by your private yacht’s  crew . The number of crew will depend on the size of the vessel, but all luxury yacht charters will include, at the very least, a Captain, several stewardesses or stews, and deckhands. A luxury yacht may also include a trained private chef, qualified spa therapist, fitness trainer, sommelier, and watersports operator, such as a dive master. A yacht’s crew comprises highly trained and dedicated professionals who will provide exceptional service levels at sea, guaranteeing an incredible experience and a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. During a superyacht charter in the greek waters, you will also benefit from shoreside support from your charter broker at Northrop & Johnson.

Mykonos yacht charters.

Boats moored at Mykonos marina

Mykonos yacht charters have attracted well-heeled guests time after time with the island's sugar-cubed villages combined with cosmopolitan allure. Mykonos' main attraction is undeniably its vibrant nightlife; amid its myriad seafront bars and clubs, partygoers dance till dawn under rose-gold skies. But this is not the island's only appeal.

Wander around the enchanting vividly-colored houses of Little Venice as the sun sets; savor a candlelit meal at one of its many fine-dining options (such as Nobu); and discover some of the magnificent bays such as Ornos . Of course, there are also a vast array of beaches to bronze on: from the iconic Paradise Beach  to the hip and happening Psarou or the more tranquil Agios Sostis .

Vouliagmeni Yacht Charters

Beautiful lake in Vouliagmeni

A Vouliagmeni yacht charter is highly exclusive, with the idyllic coastal town being a popular superyacht haven for vacations beginning or ending in Athens. Located 13 miles southeast of the capital, yacht charter guests can moor here with ease at its peaceful bay. It's an absolute must whilst you are here to take a dip in the emerald-hued waters of the lake, hugged by soaring cliffs and gently warmed by thermal springs. For the more adventurous, be sure to make the most of the bountiful underwater caves.

Santorini Yacht Charters

View of colorful houses in Oia, Greece

A Santorini yacht charter is a firm favorite amongst discerning travelers who fall in love with its endless, dramatic beauty at every turn. Dappled with whitewashed cottages and cerulean-hued domed churches tumbling down the hillsides of  Oia to and up to the capital of Firá , guests have no shortage of backdrops for sunset tipples or sights to gaze at. Visiting the world-famous Red beach in nearby Akrotiri village whilst you are here is also a must.

Santorini is also superbly located for cruising towards the crystalline shores of Magganari beach on Ios island: an ideal location for snorkeling or taking out the toys.

Five Reasons to Visit Santorini on a Luxury Yacht Charter

Hydra Yacht Charters

Crystal blue shores of old main port in Hydra, Greece

Jetsetters have long adored Hydra for yacht charters , largely owing to its heavenly seascapes. The sheltered island enthralls guests onshore, who feel as if they have stepped into a bygone era: no cars roam around, just donkeys who hobble around its picture-perfect, labyrinthine streets and harbor. Soaring escarpments set the scene for sun-drenched meals under a lingering sun, with seafood served so fresh that it's practically dripping straight from the water. Admire also the innumerable secret coves and bays to be found here, many of which can be explored on your tenders.

Milos Yacht Charters

Kleftiko Bay, Greece

The luminous, volcanic island of Milos and its fabulously turquoise bays are a superyacht favorite, yet remain largely undiscovered to the wider public. But why do the elite cruise towards its shores? For the staggeringly beautiful beaches (more than 70 of them, in fact) perfect for bringing out the water toys.

The spellbinding Kleftiko bay , the geothermal Paliochori beach, and the surreal charms of Sarakiniko beach  (with its moon-like surfaces flecked by countless caves) are popular spots here. Abound with ancient ruins, make sure you also pay a visit to the Catacombs of Milos near the village of Tripiti , and the achingly pretty hilltop Venetian Castle of Milos .

History and Culture

Greece's location at the confluence of the East and West, as well as its Roman and Ottoman occupations, have had a huge cultural and historical impact that can be still felt today in terms of cuisine and architecture.

Greeks are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture. Marvelous regional traditions permeate mainland Greece and the Greek islands, ranging from religion to music, language to food and even wine, making a Greek yacht charter a truly thrilling experience.

Types of Yacht Charters in Greece

Superyacht Irimari underway in Greek waters

Greece has a very diverse yacht charter market, so you can be sure to find the perfect yacht for you and your charter party. There’s a wide variety of motor yachts for charter , as well as sailing yachts and traditional Turkish gulets.

However, be aware that all yachts wishing to begin or end a yacht charter in Greece must be in possession of a valid Greek charter license. Speak to a  yacht charter broker for more information.

If you’re unsure about the type of yacht you’d like to charter, here are some things to consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in Greece

Charter yacht at anchor in a quiet cove in greece

For those looking to rent a motor yacht  in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from.

The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you.

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Luxury sailing yacht at anchor in Greece with water toys

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

Gulet yacht at anchor in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter.

  • A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
  • A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria.

The three tax brackets are as follows;

  • VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
  • VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters.
  • Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

Greek Charter Licences Explained

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

Quiet cove in Greece

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures.

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

Aerial view of Piraeus, the busiest passenger port in Europe

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination.

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens.

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Exploring secluded coves - luxury yacht charter vacation

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

  • Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
  • Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.
  • Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here.
  • Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
  • Rhodes Marina:  world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.

Where to End a Greece Yacht Charter

Beginning or ending your yacht charter in Athens, one of the most exciting cities in the world, is a popular choice. Be sure to explore this historic destination in all its glory before you leave.

How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece

Planning your yacht charter with a Broker

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination.

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.

Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.

That said, it is possible for a foreign-flagged yacht to charter in Greece so long as the charter begins and ends in international waters, such as Italy and Albania for yacht charters around the Ionian Islands or Turkey for charters around the Aegean islands.

Greece Yacht Charter Q&A

Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.

You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.

The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands.

The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.

The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.

5 Superyacht Owners' Favourite Greek islands

Greek shipping magnate Harry Vafias has been cruising the Greek archipelago since he was about five years old. Vafias reckons to have visited about half of the almost 2,000 islands, so we asked him to give us the insiders guide on when and where superyachts should visit...

Mykonos is my all-round winner, because it has the best of all worlds. It has the prettiest set of beaches in Greece ,  with more than 20 fantastic strips of golden sand. And these beaches cater for all tastes: family beaches such as Lia, trendy beaches like Psarou and quiet beaches such as Agios Sostis. Mykonos is also in the middle of the Aegean, so if you want to go west or east, it’s very convenient. Again, if you want to go out there are both cheap (try Bandana) and expensive restaurants (Nobu is here) with cuisine from all around the world. Two or three bays are big enough for large yachts to moor, notably Ornos and Psarou. Of course the islands is also famous for its nightlife and has a reputation as one of the best party destinations in the Mediterranean .

Rinia is more of a niche island — it’s very small and situated just south of Mykonos. It has only two or three small bays that big yachts can use, but it’s got very good protection from all kinds of weather, because the bays are quite deep. It has some of the cleanest seas, and a huge fantastic sandy beach that’s shallow for a long way out. There is nothing on the island apart from a few ancient ruins, and the huts that farmers use when they arrive by boat to tend their livestock and land. There are no restaurants or tavernas, so you can have your dinner on the beach in complete solitude. It’s only 45 minutes from Mykonos by boat, so if you need a couple of days with a change of pace, go to Rinia, relax and enjoy the quiet and the beach. When you get bored you can quickly get back to Mykonos.

This is actually a pair of islands, close to Naxos and south east of Mykonos. They have the benefit of Rinia’s quietness and privacy, but with a few small hotels and tavernas. The upper island has some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean , along with beautiful, natural seawater pools.

The small rustic restaurants, like Fos Fanari and Finikas, serve only fresh fish caught by the local boats. It’s not very crowded because there are a limited number of ferries and the two or three hotels are tiny. This is a great place if you want lovely sea to swim in, fantastic beaches, lots of fresh lobsters and fish — and relative privacy. There’s a big bay for yachts up to 50 metres to anchor.

Chios is my family’s ancestral home. It’s in the east of the Aegean, close to Turkey. It’s the fifth-biggest of the Greek islands, and you won’t find the same profusion of great sandy beaches as on the top three islands. There are still lovely places to swim, such as Maura Volia and Karfas, and the water is amazingly clean, although colder than normal because it sits in a stream of colder water. Instead, you’ll find fantastic medieval villages and the 11th Century Byzantine monastery of Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well the castle and great museums. A lot of history is on this island, and if you like old civilisations, monasteries and medieval villages, visit, grab a scooter and have a look.

Chios also has a big airport, so you can send the boat ahead and join it by air. Very few foreign tourists are on the island, but lots of Greek visitors — avoid the hordes of English backpackers! Again there is fantastic fresh food, and it’s much cheaper than Mykonos for lobster because they don’t have so many high-end tourists or big yachts visiting. And finally, you can combine the trip with a charter down to Turkey .

Vouliagmeni

Not actually an island, but I include it because it has recently become very popular. Vouliagmeni is a coastal town about 13 miles south east of Athens. This is the nicest place to swim if you live in Athens, and the water is clean. It’s possible to moor in the bay with a fantastic view of the Astir Palace Hotel, the largest hotel complex south of Athens.

This is some of the most expensive real estate in Greece, so very exclusive, and many yachts visit for a couple of days’ break, before or after Athens. It’s convenient if you have business in Athens: you can commute every day from the yacht to the city, with a helipad in the Astir Palace Hotel complex. It doesn’t feel like you are in the capital city, but on an island. It has a lovely sandy beach with great restaurants, especially in the hotel complex, and you can use all the services they provide.

Greeks third in super-yacht ownership

Greeks third in super-yacht ownership

Greek shipowners represent the world’s biggest merchant marine fleet, but also the third largest fleet of super-yachts (40 meters and over). Greece’s seas are also the fourth most popular destination for these luxury vessels, with more than 100 super-yachts with an average length of 50 meters sailing or at anchor within two miles of the country’s shores every week of the summer months.

The findings from two recent reports by Knight Frank and Bloomberg have come as something of a surprise, even to experts in the field of luxury yachting, and show the sector growing at rapid pace in recent years, alongside tourism. This also boosts docking and repair services – as dozens of these vessels will also be spending the winter in Greece – along with the super-yacht construction sector in this country.

Lists of the world’s biggest yachts already include several built in Greece, such as the Atlantis I and Atlantis II, constructed in the early 1970s at the Skaramangas Shipyard when it was owned by Stavros Niarchos, but also the 85-meter O’Ptasia, which was built in Perama earlier this year for Greek-owned Golden Yachts.

At the same time, an entire industry of builders, suppliers, crews, brokers and managers has taken root, promising high-quality services to some of the most demanding individuals in the world, while supporting the Greek economy with a high value-added activity.

Knight Frank, one of the world’s biggest private wealth investment managers, has dedicated a part of its Wealth Report 2018 to super-yacht ownership by nationality and size. Setting the category threshold at 40 meters and above and using data from SuperYacht iQ, the report notes there are currently 4,795 leisure craft that can be described as super-yachts in the world right now. When it comes to such vessels, Greece, with 107, ranks behind Russia (168) and the US (407) in terms of absolute ownership numbers. The average Greek-owned super-yacht is 50 meters in length, Russia’s is 59 meters and the US’s 52.

Fourth place is occupied by the UK with 96 super-yachts and Saudi Arabia with 54, while the average length in the latter’s fleet is 68 meters.

Many of these super-yachts, particularly those owned by Greeks and Saudis, sail in Greek waters, which data show are the fourth busiest in terms of super-yacht traffic, behind the US, French and Italian seas. This interesting fact was reported by Bloomberg, which used the AIS ship tracking system, which most super-yachts are equipped with, and found that over a random period during the summer season there were at least 100 super-yachts of an average length of 51.7 meters at a distance of two miles from the country’s coast, compared with 200 in Italy, 147 in France and 143 in the United States. Spain comes a close fifth, with Croatia and Monaco lagging in sixth and seventh place.

It is worth noting that the presence of these luxury vessels also helps boost the popularity of smaller yachts – as is more than evident in Greece’s seas in the summer – but also the development of the country’s marinas and investor interest in them, foremost among which is Alimos Marina on Athens’s southern coast, which is set for privatization.

Over in the Piraeus suburb of Perama, workers at the Golden Yachts shipyard are building the biggest mega-yacht ever to have been constructed there. Started just a few months ago, it is a 95-meter behemoth and the company’s most ambitious project to date, known in-house as the GY95.

Golden Yachts, which is entirely Greek-owned, has already built or completely converted 14 yachts. Among these, the O’Ptasia was launched in April and completed a series of successful tests runs in the early summer. At 85 meters in length, with a maximum width of 13.8 meters and a cruising speed of 16 knots thanks to its twin 3,386hp Caterpillar 3516C engines, it is the biggest ship in the Golden Yachts fleet – at least until the GY95 is rolled out. The company, meanwhile, is also making plans to start building 100-meter-plus mega-yachts.

Golden Yachts opened in 1996 as a consultancy firm and entered construction in 1998, with the O’Rea. It started by specializing in the construction of leisure boats of 28 to 85 meters, but has now put its focus on cutting-edge, super-luxurious yachts of 60 to 110 meters. It owns many of the vessels it has built, as the aim from the outset was chartering. The firm is also active in manning and managing mega-yachts through a separate company.

Power boats also a growing market

Not a lot of Greek businesses can claim that their products are coveted around the world from Sydney to Miami and from the Maldives to Helsinki, but Technohull can. The designer and builder of cutting-edge rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) is based in the coastal Athens suburb of Alimos and has production facilities at the eastern Attica port of Lavrio.

The export-oriented company is active in the high-end part of the international market for luxury power boats, selling its products at surprisingly competitive prices – as much as 40 percent below the competition. How does it do this?

“With a lot of hard work but also with restraint in regards to our profit margin,” says Gerassimos Petratos, chairman and CEO of Technohull.

In 2005, the company was able to put together two or three boats a year. Last year it delivered 50 vessels and this year it is aiming for 70. At the same time, sales have soared from a few hundred thousand euros in the second half of the 2000s to just shy of 10 million euros last year. And from a staff of three in 2005, Technohull now employees 50 people part-time and works with 20 associates and contractors.

Around 70 percent of the company's clients are located abroad, with Technohull exporting all over Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, parts of the Middle East, Australia and the US, among others.

“The amounts we invest in research and development are among the highest in the world in this field, comparative to our size,” says Petratos.

Now, the Greek company has set its sights on being able to deliver 100 boats a year by 2020. To this end, it is also looking to expand its production facilities and investing further in product development and design.

Hundreds of miles of undeveloped, virgin coastlines mean that intimacy and natural seclusion are integral parts of Greece’s charm. The Eastern Mediterranean’s mild climate favours yachting and sailing all year round and offers warm temperatures and brilliant sunlight even during the autumn months, amid the total safety which the seas of Greece are known for. Sweeping, cloudless skies await, with a refreshing summer breeze permeating each of the hundreds of quaint islands and uninhabited islets to be discovered. Secure waters and the element of privacy set the ideal scene for a yachting experience beyond compare.

Worldwide fame has not marred the beloved traditional character of Santorini; its uniquely amphitheatrical towns, like the beloved Oia, are gems of authenticity and breathtaking beauty. This is one of the best places on the planet to sail through the sunset or approach the mythical caldera by yacht.

This well-known Cycladic island is coveted worldwide, and for good reason! Moor your yacht or sailboat in the New Port to discover the whitewashed alleyways studded with boutique shops and high-end restaurants; an unmistakable cosmopolitan aura abounds here. The characteristic 16th-century windmills are an intriguing cultural landmark and point to its fascinating history.

Sculpted by the sea over many millennia, the coastline of Milos is filled with natural rock formations that simply beg to be admired. Inspiration abounds here; this is where the world-renowned Venus de Milo was found, as well as several other poignant sculptures which now grace some of the world’s most highly visited museums. Many of its most radiant shores are only reachable by sea, like Kleftiko on its southern coast, so this is the ideal place for a sailing or yachting trip; Sarakiniko Beach is a definite must-see for anyone visiting Milos, for its spectacular views.

The Saronic Gulf simply wouldn’t be the same without Hydra! Only an hour away from Athens, this perfect break from the city features stunning Venetian mansions and traditional monasteries, as well as superb pebbly beaches. Brimming with personality, Kos is a stunning member of the Dodecanese island group studded with palms and filled with stories of a vibrant past. Its shady and cool Plaka Forest is inhabited by peacocks, making it the perfect place for a nature stroll. Kos is also where you should break out your diving gear, with intriguing shipwrecks and bustling marine life to peruse on an undersea excursion. Majestic city walls are an unmistakeable Rhodes landmark, and are best admired when approaching the island by yacht. This gorgeous capital of the Dodecanese has been dubbed “The island of the Knights” because it was conquered during medieval times and turned into a thriving cosmopolitan centre; now, the Medieval City of Rhodes is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site which should absolutely be explored.

The Sporades are most easily discovered with the charming Skiathos as a home base! Small distances between islands mean that the captivating Skopelos and Skyros are some of the best destinations to tour by yacht or sailboat; however, be sure not to miss the picturesque Skiathos Port as it’s well known for its charming houses and lovely harbour.

This stunning member of the Sporades is characterised by its lush orchards and olive groves; it also hosts an array of wildlife at its National Marine Park, which is home to the Mediterranean monk seal, as well as dolphins and rare seabirds, and is surrounded with islets that are best explored by yacht. Its postcard-perfect Votsi Bay and Agios Dimitrios Beach are known for offering wonderful sea and sun as well as peaceful seclusion.

The crown jewel of the Ionian Sea, Corfu is as cultural as it gets when it comes to the Greek islands! Its intriguing history has offered it some truly stunning architectural gems which display Venetian, English and French influences, including the Achillion Palace which was built for the Empress of Austria in 1890. Its beaches are surrounded by viridescent forestry and perfect for approaching by yacht or sailboat.

The oasis of the Ionian Sea, Lefkada is a verdant paradise, characterised by beaches that are more easily approached by yacht due to the steep ocher-toned cliffs which they are enveloped by. Porto Katsiki and Egremni are two such coves which are complete must-visits for their crystal clear waters and pale sands. Lefkada is particularly well known for its picturesque, traditional villages; a perfect example of this is Nydri, easily approachable by yacht as it is situated on the island’s lush coastline.

Odysseus spent ten years trying to reach this island, and we can tell why! This tiny Ionian haven sparked the notion of “nostos”, a literary term which has coloured the lives of Greeks and the entire world. With a population of a little over 3,000 inhabitants, explore this island’s idyllic coastline by yacht in a single afternoon as the sunset colours its crystalline waters.

Paxos & Antipaxos

Among the 20 most beautiful islands in the world, Paxos has been renowned throughout history for its mythical allure and rugged, natural scenery, including the Blue Caves of Paxos on its west coast. Its capital, Gaios, looks as perfect as a postcard; but rather than whiling the days and nights away in its quaint seaside cafes, take a yachting tour to Antipaxos to discover the gorgeous Voutoumi Beach.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.
