For $16 million, indiana’s first riverboat casino can be yours.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana’s first riverboat casino is up for sale again.
New Orleans Paddlewheels Inc. has announced it is pursuing a sale of the Riverboat Louis Armstrong . That riverboat initially served as Casino Aztar’s gambling riverboat on the Ohio River in Evansville.
The boat, originally named City of Evansville, opened as Indiana’s first riverboat casino in 1995. In 2017, the casino, then operating as Tropicana Evansville, moved to land-based gambling and closed the riverboat.
The riverboat was sold to the New Orleans-based group, where it underwent renovations and opened as the city’s “most luxurious, and most unique concert and events venue on the Mississippi River.”
“In light of the recent changes to the local tourism market and hospitality industry, especially the ones that have resulted in the cancelling of future conventions in New Orleans, New Orleans Paddlewheels, Inc., has decided to pursue the potential sale of the Riverboat Louis Armstong,” company president Walter Reuther Jr. said in a statement. “Although this is somewhat unexpected, the change in circumstances arising out of the significant post-COVID changes has necessitated this path, and the sale of the vessel will permit the company to redeploy assets and personnel in other areas.”
The company is reportedly seeking $16 million for the 3,000-passenger riverboat. A Facebook video released in January 2022 features a tour of the riverboat .

Former Indiana Riverboat Casino is Looking for a New Adventure

If you happen to have some cash just sitting around, you could own your very own riverboat - and this one just happens to have ties to the city of Evansville, Indiana .
Gambling on the Water
In 1993 Indiana passed legislation to legalize casino gambling, but there was a catch - it couldn't be done on land. In 1995, Evansville became home to the state's first-ever riverboat casino - Casino Aztar. Docked on the Ohio River , along Riverside Drive in the city's downtown, those who wanted to try their luck could enjoy table games, slots, and more. Ch-Ch-Changes
After nearly twenty years, Casino Aztar was purchased and its name was changed to Tropicana Evansville, but the casino was still housed on the 310-foot riverboat. In 2015, Indiana made changes to the laws regarding where casinos could do business, and in 2017, Tropicana Evansville became Indiana's first land-based casino. (The land-based operations continued as Tropicana until 2021 when the casino was purchased by current owners, Bally's.) Bye Bye Riverboat
The longtime riverfront fixture departed the River City for a fresh start in the Crescent City. In 2021, the vessel, which holds 3,000 passengers, made its way down the Ohio River, and along the Mighty Mississippi to make its way to what would be its new dock in New Orleans . It was here that the boat took on its new name and new life as it was transformed into a night club and events space known as the Riverboat Louis Armstrong . It even made an appearance on Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve in 2021 .
Up For Sale
The riverboat is now up for sale and if you happen to have $15,995,500.00 to spend. What exactly would a new owner be getting for that kind of cash? According to OceanMarine Brokerage Services , that price tag brings the potential for "turn key operation." Originally built in 1995 as a replica of a Civil War Era steamboat, the vessel was updated and rebuilt fully in 2019.
This vessel is a replica of the Historic "Robert E. Lee racing sidewheel steamboat" crafted nearly 130 years ago. Construction took 200 workers over 12 months to complete.
Big Bang for Your Buck
Most recently, in July of 2022, a certificate of the inspection was completed by the United States Coast Guard. The riverboat boasts nearly 80,000 square feet, with just over half of that being public area. The brokerage firm says the fair market value for the former Casino Aztar riverboat is $31,000,000.000. Former Tropicana riverboat up for sale for the 2nd time
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Tropicana riverboat that was once in Evansville is now up for sale again.
Evansville’s former riverboat was sold in 2017 and reopened as the Riverboat Louis Armstrong in New Orleans bank in 2019.
The boat became a landmark in Evansville since it first opened as Casino Aztar in 1995.
Since being rebuilt in 2019, the riverboat became one of New Orleans’s newest nightclub and event venue spaces on the Mississippi River.
The former Evansville casino, since the first sale, has held concerts, music events, weddings, conventions, and large-scale parties since leaving.
The current owners of the riverboat have now decided to sell the boat, making this the second time the boat has been up for sale.
The asking price, as of now, is $15,995,500.

Horseshoe Southern Indiana Riverboat Casino to Close as Land-Based Venue Ready for Operations
Only a few days remain for the Horseshoe Southern Indiana as the Caesars new land-based property is about to open. Caesars Interactive has been working on a $90 million project, the Caesars Southern Indiana casino, for quite some time and the opening date is just around the corner . Before the new land-based venue can open, the riverboat must shutdown. The Horseshoe will end its long-running operations on December 9 th .
Over the weekend, the Horseshoe played host to a Bon Voyage party as the venue prepares to close. Since 1998, the riverboat has provided a prime spot for entertainment and many locals are sad to see it go. The party showcased the history of the riverboat casino and how it helps to bring casino gaming to the southern portion of Indiana back in the 1990s.
In the beginning, there was hesitation regarding bringing casino gaming to the region. However, the boat did well, bringing jobs as well as travelers to the region, helping to boost the local economy. Known as The Glory of Rome, the riverboat is the largest in the US and the largest gambling riverboat in the world.
After operating for 21 years, the time of the riverboat casino has come to an end. In 2015, lawmakers of the state decided to allow boat casinos to move to dry land and now it is finally time for the Caesars property to make the move.
Horseshoe Southern Indiana Vice President and General Manager Brad Seigel commented on the change, stating the boat is for sale and they expect it to be sold but when is uncertain.
Caesars has been working hard on the new land-based property, creating a space that offers a Las Vegas experience. Visitors will be able to walk directly into the casino once visiting, instead of having to travel across a parking lot to get to the riverboat. While the experience will be different, players are looking forward to the larger space and more amenities.
According to the developer, the property is sleek and attractive, offering the ability to play casino games as well as enjoy dining and entertainment. The property will include a casino floor and sportsbook, with plenty of options for visitors.
A VIP Lounge is located on site as well as the Piazza that will offer five restaurants for dining. While the old riverboat is a nostalgic experience, the newer venue is sure to bring in more foot traffic and will be appealing to travelers from out of state.
The Caesars Southern Indiana venue will open on December 12 th , just days after the Horseshoe closes its doors. We shall see in the coming weeks how receptive the locals as well as tourists are to the new venue. It will take a few months before we can see the financial impact the facility has on the local gambling economy. Once reports surface, we will provide insight on these details.

To mark the closure of the boat, a party was held over the weekend. When it officially closed, the slot machines were moved into the new land-based casino.
