Fire Erupts at Marina del Rey Yacht Club, Injuring Two and Destroying Business
H orrifying videos of the California Yacht Club devoured by fire are circulating the web, showing the historic two-story Marina del Rey clubhouse completely engulfed in flames, KTLA reports .
The Los Angeles Fire Department began fighting the fire at the 4400 block of Admiralty Way after a call around 11:30 pm on Monday. They arrived to see the building already erupting in smoke and flame, consuming the upper floor.
Despite their best efforts, a second alarm was quickly called for more resources. The fire was not completely extinguished until two hours later, around 1:30 a.m. Two firefighters received moderate injuries from the struggle and were taken to the local hospital. KTLA states that both men were released in the morning.
They’ve since discovered that two employees were inside the building at the time and that the fire looks to have started near the kitchen area. However, a definitive cause remains to be uncovered, and an investigation is still ongoing.
The fire had blazed so high that it immediately caught the eye of locals in nearby buildings, though even by the time they called, much of the building was lost. As the sun rose, it revealed the scars it left on the club and surrounding areas. Thankfully, all the boats remain unscathed. However, now club members are unable to gather at their favorite spot before the holidays.
Former owner Steve Hathaway and his wife looked over the charred remains of the club, telling CBS, “It's been our home for home for how many years now…this is such a tragedy to see this club burn like this.” Hathaway’s father helped build the club in the 1960s, and it's been a center of the community since.

Fire destroys California Yacht Club
Published on December 12th, 2023 by Editor -->
A massive fire decimated the California Yacht Club located in Marina del Rey, CA.
The fire was reported around 11:30 pm on December 11, with crews arriving to find heavy smoke and fire engulfing the two-story building. Two firefighters suffered moderate injuries before the blaze was knocked down just before 1:30 am on December 12, 2023.
Among the prominent California clubs, it has been a frequent host to national and international regattas, with recent events including the J/70 World Championship, US Junior Women’s Championship, Martin 242 North American Championship, and CFJ National Championship.
The club was started in 1922 in Los Angeles harbor by a group of dedicated yachtsman – most from Los Angeles Athletic Club and the rest active in other early yacht clubs of the day. But when the USA went to war in 1941, the club’s facilities were taken over by the Coast Guard.
After World War II, the facilities were so run down that CYC was forever gone from its birthplace. However, a group of previous CYC members and other prominent yachtsmen were encouraged by the development of Marina del Rey and reactived California Yacht Club in 1961.
Former owner Steve Hathaway noted that his father helped build the club in the 1960s. “It’s been a home for so many people. We are so heartbroken right now… It tears me apart to see… It’s just terrible,” said Hathaway.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Comment : This one is personal as Scuttlebutt was founded at California Yacht Club with two generations of the Leweck family having photos and trophies that perished in the flames. – Craig Leweck, Scuttlebutt
Excerpt from Los Angeles Times on December 15, 2023:
The blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club. Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.
John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night (Dec. 11). The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.
The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.
Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.
The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said the fire was first reported around 11.30pm Monday at the Yacht Club on Admiralty Way.
When crews arrived at the scene, thick smoke and flames engulfed the two-story building that was founded in 1922 and built in 1967.
'My dad built this place in the early 60s and it has been our home for many years...such a tragedy to see it burn down,' Steve Hathaway, the former owner of California Yacht Club, told CBS Los Angeles.

The blaze was extinguished just before 1.30am Tuesday, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The two male firefighters who were hurt suffered mild injuries while they battled the flames. They were taken to a local hospital, Los Angeles County Fire Department PIO Fred Fielding said. No other injuries were reported.
Pictures revealed the now charred perimeter of the clubhouse, which according to the California Yacht Club, was where the fire damaged.
The many boats surrounding the club were intact, and the roof of the clubhouse also appeared to be untouched by the flames.

It remains unclear what sparked the blaze but an Instagram post by the club said: 'we will work together on what's next'
Marina del Rey translates to 'Harbor of the King' in Spanish and is popularly visited by sail boats, powerboats, along with rented and owned charters.
Fishers also come to the water in hopes of catching yellowfin tune, perch, barracuda, rockfish, cod, mackerel and sea bass.
'Thank you to all of the first responders and our thoughts are with the two firefighters injured. Our community is strong and we will work together on what’s next,' the California Yacht Club said in an Instagram post.

West Coast Clubs Travel East to the New York Yacht Club Resolute Cup
A recent press release from the New York Yacht Club highlighted Bay Area racer Daniel Thielman and his crew from the Corinthian Yacht Club as a new invitee to compete in the annual New York Yacht Club Resolute Cup. This year, 28 teams have been invited to this all-amateur sailing event, including seven from the West Coast: California Yacht Club, Corinthian YC of San Francisco, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, San Diego Yacht Club, Seattle Yacht Club, St. Francis Yacht Club, and San Francisco Yacht Club.
Beyond Thielman’s active campaigning of his Melges 32 Kuai on the Bay, he’s also been active nationally, winning multiple championships in the Melges 20 class, where he’s also the defending world champion. He recently returned to the Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco with the IC37 National Championship title won during New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport, RI, sailed July 17–20. This September, however, will mark the first time that his club has fielded a team in the Resolute Cup, motivated by Thielman’s desire to qualify for the prestigious Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, which will next take place in September 2025.
“Members of our Corinthian Yacht Club purchased an IC37 back in 2023 to prepare for the Invitational Cup,” said Thielman. “After a year of preparation, we’ve assembled a team that is ready to make a qualifying bid.”
Thielman will be sailing with trimmers Jen Canestra and Auric Horneman, who have been his constant and trusted teammates for over 10 years of racing Melges boats together, and Nick Voss.
“We currently race in the Melges 20, Melges 14, and IC37 one-design fleets around the country, and PHRF race our Melges 32 on San Francisco Bay,” Thielman says. “We hope that adding Nick as a tactician for the Resolute Cup, with his many years of junior, college and adult team racing experience, will give us the edge we need to be competitive.”
Since 2010, the Resolute Cup has served as a Corinthian championship for US yacht clubs and the only guaranteed pathway for an American club to earn a berth in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, Corinthian (amateur) sailing’s most prestigious international competition. The seventh edition of the biennial competition — the event was not sailed in 2020 — is scheduled for September 9 to 14 at the New York Yacht Club, Harbour Court, in Newport, RI. The 2024 Resolute Cup will utilize the Club’s fleet of Sonars, with provided sails, equalized rig tune and on-the-water umpiring ensuring sailing’s ultimate level playing field. The 2024 New York Yacht Club Regatta Association regatta calendar is supported by Helly Hansen, Hammetts Hotel, Safe Harbor Marinas and Peters & May.
While Thielman has shown remarkable ability across multiple one-design classes, the Sonar, a displacement boat with a symmetric spinnaker, is a bit of a departure from what he and his team normally sail.
“Every boat we own, and every fleet we compete in, has asymmetric kites,” he says. “We have gotten in limited practices on J/22s to prepare, but with our aggressive championship race schedule in other fleets, we are mostly going to be winging it with a symmetric kite. I would not be surprised if we have a slow start, with results that steadily improve throughout the week.”
The complete list of competing teams is here: American Yacht Club, Rye, NY; Austin (Texas) Yacht Club; Bay Waveland Yacht Club, Bay St. Louis, MS; Bayview Yacht Club, Detroit, MI.; California Yacht Club, Marina del Rey, CA; Carolina Yacht Club, Charleston, SC; Charleston Yacht Club, Charleston, SC; Chicago (IL) Yacht Club; Corinthian Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA; Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco, Tiburon, CA; Eastern Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA; Edgewater Yacht Club, Cleveland, Ohio; Fort Worth (Texas) Yacht Club; Lakewood Yacht Club, Seabrook, Texas; Larchmont (NY.)
