I can't believe how light the helm is, slight weather helm when close hauled

but otherwise direct. She tacks so cleanly in all winds, with no need to back the foresail and even with just the main around she goes. With the other boat and a reefed foresail I could only gybe her round. Performance: got her on a reach in a Force 5 on flat water, wow what a blast and no rooster tail and no spray, I couldn't believe it and when the lee float started burying no drama, really impressive. Light airs show good performance, with the mono sailors motoring back we sail right through them and they can't believe it. Interior room is really good, loads more room and more comfortable than my previous 28ft boat and she looks really good. Have really enjoyed building the boat, your excellent plans have made it relatively easy and I get the feeling that am going to enjoy sailing it just as much.

F-22S – the premium standard model, with more options available, and being built in New Zealand. Limited volume only.

HULL CONSTRUCTION

NPG Gelcoat – the most water resistant gelcoat available, and backed with vinylester/epoxy resin under waterline, and isophtalic polyesters elsewhere

Foam Core sandwich construction throughout, with double bias or bi-axial glass fabrics. Carbon fiber is used selectively in highly stressed areas, while main hull keel is reinforced with Kevlar, both sides of core. This helps stiffen the hull for rig loads, plus is an excellent barrier against hull penetration should boat go on rocks. The gold colored Kevlar can be seen in below photo.

Resin Infused – all parts are fully resin infused under a high vacuum which draws the resin through the various reinforcing fabrics and perforated foam core simultaneously, giving aerospace quality laminates.

Reinforcement – All reinforcements, either glass or carbon, are a stitched fabric (not woven) with either double bias or biaxial fiber orientation

Core – PVC foam core is used, with high density inserts where required for all fittings. All exposed core edges are de-cored and filled.

Seamless Float Construction – floats are clean and smooth, and the internal join system makes them the strongest available.

No Interior Liners – heavy gelcoated hull liners are avoided to minimize excess weight, and allow easy access to structure and all fittings for maintenance.

COMPUTERIZED CONSTRUCTION GUIDES

A computerized assembly procedure is used for all parts, which means every operation is specified, in a step by step sequence, with each step then being signed off as completed in one master guide for each boat.

Construction begins with over 50 colorized lamination guides, detailing each individually colored reinforcement, to ensure nothing can be overlooked.

Highly detailed construction checklists (over 90 pages) then guide all subsequent assembly procedures, specifying each task, and when and how it should be accomplished.

Quality is checked at every step, and again with a final 147 item Checklist. Even the shipping procedure on trailer or the shipping cradle is guided by a Checklist to avoid any problems in transit or delivery.

BEAM CONSTRUCTION

Beams are a carbon/glass composite, with multiple layers of carbon fiber unidirectional, top and bottom. Fully resin infused with a vinylester/epoxy resin to optimize structural properties.

The Latest Third Generation Beams have folding strut pivot points integrated, with metal brackets eliminated – stronger and eliminates corrosion problems. The new integrated wingnet lashing eyes eliminate 36 stainless saddle eyes and 72 stainless fasteners. Simply the most modern and advanced folding beams available.

The innovative new beam shape also minimizes drag, while trapping and directing any spray down and under the beams, for a drier boat.

FARRIER FOLDING SYSTEM™

Third Generation Compression Pads transfer inward compression loads from beams into hull. Now being on top of the beams they are fully visible and accessible for easy adjustment as required. These eliminate any beam creaking that may occur with earlier designs (annoying but harmless) where compression pads are difficult to see or adjust.

Folding Struts ™ – CNC machined high strength aluminum struts, with over size Type 316 stainless steel pins and custom high strength plastic bushings.

Self-Draining Anchor Well with optional vents in aft wall, which can be used to ventilate interior with dry air through well, even when raining

Self-Draining Cockpit – storage lockers both sides, while the boomless traveler is located well aft for an uncluttered cockpit. A new aft mast support has now been added which can stay in place all the time and also act as a stern rail. Cockpit lockers are also larger

STANDARD EXTERIOR FEATURES

The following items are included as standard on the F-22, F-22S and F-22R. Only sails & safety gear need to be added for sailing.

Contrasting Color Non-Skid – with a user friendly stick-on pattern, and excellent grip. Very easy to repair

Stainless Bow Pulpit – side mounted to provide extra width, and more clearance for jib, which allows the best sail shape most of the time. Can also be slid further outwards for extra anchor storage in special brackets. Netting or lashing can be used in the open side areas if wished. Pulpit sides are also easily removable for racing if required.

Through Bolted 6” Mooring Cleat with two fairleads each side of bow.

Foredeck Hatch – Low profile Lewmar SZ 50 hatch (350 x 480 opening). Standard on F-22S and F-22R, but optional on F-22

Float Deck Hatches – Two Sopac 360 x 460mm (14 x 18”) rectanglar hatches, and two Armstrong round hatches

Forward Mast Trailering Support – holds the mast securely in the trailering position. Removable when not required

Main Cabin Side Windows – in tinted acrylic

Pop-top Hatch – lifts up for full standing headroom, plus being multidirectional it can also slide forward, and be semi raised as shown.

Companionway Hatch Boards – in tinted acrylic and more open than shown.

Wing Nets: Heavy duty open mesh black nets, with end lashing gaps covered by beam spray flanges for better safety.

Harken 20.2PTP Aluminum Winches – two are standard on F-22R, but optional on the F-22 and F-22S

Lewmar D1 Clutches for halyards on mast base where required

Mast Rotation Controls: for positive control of mast rotation – F-22 has a 1 : 1 system, while F-22S and F-22R come with a 2 : 1 system as standard.

Harken R27 Traveler System for boomless mainsail (standard) with HK 1628 car and HK 2730 ends. The optional side mounted outboard shown is easy to reach and tilts well clear of water.

Harken Mainsheet System – 6 : 1 & 12 : 1 fine tune using Harken blocks 2604, 2140, 2616, and 2650.

Ronstan RC72540 Jib Sheet Tracks and leads with provision for 2 : 1 sheeting (for F-22 without winches)

Aft Mast Support – supports mast while trailering, with a roller for easy mast moving. The mast spreaders will also clear the roller assembly so there is no need to lift them over when rolling back, allowing raising to be done single-handed. Aft mast support can be left in place while sailing, which helps secure the stern area, plus makes a great place to hang a life buoy. The new style shown is stainless steel, it’s lighter, doubles as a stern rail, and can also be used as a boarding ladder. The mast rollers just lift off when not needed.

Aft cockpit area is now more open, being lighter, and allowing better use of the storage area under the seats with either netting or shelving

Daggerboard – high aspect tapered carbon/glass & foam composite for maximum efficiency and reliability. A ‘kick back’ centerboard is optional.

Daggerboard Rudder – carbon/glass all composite construction. Precision PETP bearings are used to eliminate slop.

Outboard Bracket – A fixed outboard bracket is standard for the F-22, and this is bolted to a molded pod on hull side. A pivoting outboard bracket (as shown above) adds variable prop depth and tilt height when required. This is standard on the F-22S and F-22R, and an option for the F-22.

Safety Gear Container – in hull side at aft end of main cabin where it is well protected and always accessible from inside and outside via an Armstrong hatch.

Type 316 Stainless Steel Fasteners are used on all fittings, to eliminate the rust staining that can be common with Type 304.

Insulated Fasteners – All stainless steel fasteners are insulated from aluminum by nylon or acetal washers, or a bedding compound in order to prevent corrosion

MAST AND RIGGING

F-22 and F-22S Alloy Rotating Mast – standard aluminum mast is 9.6m (31.5′) long

F-22R Alloy Rotating Wing Mast – 10.8m (35.4′) long, and a Southern Spars carbon wing mast is now optional

Custom Mast Step – all carbon deck step for both alloy or carbon masts for minimal corrosion and a lower weight. Mast foot is aluminum, and mast rotation is automatic in most conditions, rotation controls not being essential.

The key internal halyards use rope clutches mounted on rotating mast foot, which allows these halyards to be led directly to a winch when required (as shown) with no need for any deck turning blocks (less deck clutter). Unused halyards or control lines can just be led into the cabin as shown, to keep them tidy, or they can be stored in mesh bags velcroed to the pop-top roof or its aft edge. These can then just be flipped up forward onto the pop-top when a clear hatchway is required.

Messenger lines are included in the mast for other halyards (if not ordered). F-22RS deck layout shown, with optional spinnaker tack line clutch.

All Synthetic Stays with Colligo Deadeyes – eliminates stainless steel wire, saving weight, and avoiding the damage wire can do to the boat when rigging or de-rigging.

Stay Tensioners : Shown in photo above – not always necessary, as rotating masts usually have a slack rig, to allow mast to rotate. However, they are needed to sail jib only in order to keep the rig tight enough to support jib. Main only does not need them, but tensioners are still useful to take out any unwanted slop in leeward stay, plus can they can be eased off when needed to make mast rotation or folding easier.

Single-Handed Mast Setup – The mast step system is designed for easy single-handed mast raising using the supplied Mast Raising Anchors that just clip onto cabin sides. Mast can be raised on the trailer, or on the water.

Mast Lowering Video

Mast Raising Pole – coupled with the raising wires to cabin side anchors makes raising mast easy. Two additional light lines from raising pole to specially located eyes on the side of anchors makes it even easier, as mast foot will automatically align with pivot ball, as mast is fully raised.

Mast Raising On the Water – a special block assembly just clips onto bow, and allows mast to be raised on the water (while folded or unfolded), by using a cabin top winch. Trailer winch is used on the trailer.

INTERIOR STANDARD FEATURES

Forward Double berth – 2m + (6.5′) long and with ample room for two. Large storage area underneath.

Two side Settee Berths: extend aft into quarterberth areas on each side of cockpit.

F-22R & F-22XR

The F-22R is a racing version of the F-22, with a simple basic interior, while F-22XR is a more restricted class racing version. Main differences are as follows:

Rudder – has 200mm (8”) longer blade

Daggerboard – is all carbon

Mast – taller 10.8m (35’ 5”) aluminum wing mast (carbon wing mast now optiona).

Spinnaker – is an available optional

Will be the dedicated class racing version of the F-22, and is currently still under development

OPTIONS

These are available at additional cost, as listed in more detail on the separate Price List

Fully Battened Mainsail and Jib – roller furling boomless main with battens, 2 reefs, & bolt rope luff. Main can be rolled up for easy storage once sailing is complete (see video). Photo shows main partly furled, and reefing controls can be quickly added at this stage. The furling ability keeps the main neat and tidy and under full control when reefed – there is no need for any sail ties.

Jib Furling Video

Roller Furling Jib – with KZ furler and mounted to chainplate below deck, so only minimal sail area lost when a furler is fitted. The furling line runs aft along deck, to pass under forward beam, and then up through wing net lashing area to be anchored to aft beam by a bungy cord, and cleated in a supplied Harken cleat on cockpit seat edge. Keeps deck clean and free from clutter.

Note that the furling jib does not need a halyard, and connects directly to mast, eliminating jib halyard and clutch. This was done on boat #1 and worked very well, to where it is now standard with furled jibs.

The furling jib then acts as the forestay (another line eliminated), modern furler systems coupled with a structural anti-torque line being strong enough for this. Jib can still be lowered should the need ever arise, by having a zipper luff, with an internal luff halyard.

Note that F-22 masts will still come setup with a jib halyard sheave and a separate forestay pin above as is traditional, allowing use of a separate forestay (synthetic) with a traditional ‘hanked on’ jib, once a jib halyard and clutch is added

Bow Pole – with integrated fittings. Required for either screacher or spinnaker. F-22 pole shown, while F-22R pole outer end is extended out for spinnaker. Pole can pivot up to be out of the way.

Screacher – roller furling with KZ furler (F-22) or Colligo furler (F-22R) and sheeting to strap around aft beam. This allows sheeting angle to be easily adjusted.

Screacher Control kit: halyard, Lewmar D1 clutch, furler (Colligo 1.5 or KZ1), cleats, sheets, and sheet blocks.

Asymmetric Spinnaker: (F-22R only)

Spinnaker Control kit: halyard, tack line, two Lewmar D1 clutches, cleats, & blocks, and sheets (also to aft beam)

Kick-Up Centerboard can kick back when going aground – offset case gives more room inside

Centerboard fully down at left, and retracted at right for minimal drag.

Bow Nets with very open weave netting

Performance Package – For more efficient controls. Includes: Barber haulers, masthead Windex, tiller extension (several options).

Bow Side Windows – these give more light inside, plus a view forward from the cabin. Optional for F-22, standard on F-22S and F-22R

High Folded stability: This is very good when fully folded, as shown above. But care should always be taken with an R rig in strong cross winds. If ever concerned, then use the widest folded position, or unfold one float.

Trailer – This is a high quality ‘state of the art’ trailer to perfectly match the boat. It has an galvanized steel frame, while cradle, winch post and mudguards are all fiberglass.

Features include alloy winch, alloy jockey wheel, alloy 13” wheels, override disk brakes, separate removable lights, spare wheel.

Length – 6.7m (22′) Weight 310 – 330kg (680 – 720lbs) Capacity 1100kg (2400lbs) Wheels – 13″ (330mm) Tires – 165R13LT 600mm dia.

The trailer is very user friendly, with its well carpeted fiberglass bed, making it very hard to damage boat when being launched or retrieved. It may not yet be approved for some markets, and this may be required for the first trailers to arrive in a particular country. A new boat being hosed down at the ramp after test launching. Note plenty of clearance for the towing SUV. This is the original #1 factory trailer, and has had the drawbar extended to just the right length. All subsequent trailers come at this length.

Shipping Cradle – this is the actual fiberglass bed from the trailer, and it can be converted into a wheeled launching dolly, or eventually a full trailer from plans (still in process) after the boat has been delivered. A cradle is not required when a trailer is ordered.

Outboard – Yamaha 6 or 8 (only available for NZ delivered boats at present).

Lifting Eyes – four Wichard 6684 fold down pad eyes, with one at each corner of main cabin, for lifting boat into water

Anchor Package – Galvanixed S13 Danforth, or Manson R4 Racer (aluminum) with 10’ (3m) of chain & 164’ (50m) of line

Pop-top Cover – coming – fully encloses and weatherproofs pop-top for full standing headroom while overnighting. Insect screens optional. Can be left up while sailing. Shown fitted to an F-27 in above photo.

Bimini Top – coming – also shown above behind Pop-top cover. Shades cockpit area on hot days and can also be left up while sailing. Folds back out of the way when not in use.

F-22 Trimaran

Between performance and comfort, which would you choose? To end the debate, Ian Farrier designed the F-22, a folding, transportable trimaran, built for a no-compromise programme combining above average speed and liveability. Until now, it has been built as a one-off by motivated amateurs, but mass production will be starting in 2012.

The architect is offering several accommodation plans, with a short or long coachroof, an aft cabin, etc.

A few cables from the Croisette and its palaces, ‘Nid d'Abeille’ has just celebrated by parading through the roads of Cannes, clothed in bright yellow and carbon. The F-22 trimaran, built by Thierry Hémard, was impressive on its trailer, but didn’t really have a wasp-waist. The convoy nevertheless threaded its way without difficulty to the small slipway. But when the moment came to manipulate the trailer by hand on the slipway, the mask fell: behind the bulky appearance its ‘body-built’ shape gives it, hides a lightweight young lady, as light as you please, to play the star on the beach…and spoil the fun on the finish lines at regattas. It must be said that the damsel has undergone a strict diet during her construction: lightened foam sandwich at each meal, and liposuction under vacuum to eliminate any excess epoxy resin. Final verdict: less than 600 kg on the scales, when its competitors of an equivalent size show 100 to 200 kg of additional spare tyre. We could also quote the example of spectacular anorexia noted on an F-22 weighing just 480 kg, built completely in carbon by Melvest Marine, whilst other examples have opted for an aluminium mast and less high tech construction,...

Removal from container costs, and local transport to the final destination will then be buyers responsibility, as will all destination entry or customs fees, insurance costs, or any destination duty or taxes that may be applicable.

Freight quotes will normally give two rates, one to the nearest port only (CFR), and one to final destination (DAP) which is direct to place of assembly, and includes local clearance and delivery costs (not taxes). Note that freight rates can vary greatly over time and with different destinations so it is not possible to give an accurate freight cost in the shopping cart system. This will be done by a separate quote at time of shipping, but the above is a good guide.

NZ buyers can pick up direct from factory or local NZ wide delivery can be arranged.

The container can be delivered to any convenient yard, so that boat can be removed from container and assembled by owner. This is not difficult, and fully detailed removal/assembly instructions will be supplied with every shipped boat. The following links give a general idea of the procedure:

If required, a Farrier Marine representative can also assist with assembly for an additional fee, plus any expenses. The larger F-33 takes longer to assemble after delivery, with a more work involved, but the basic principles are the same.

RESERVING A HULL NUMBER

This can be done at any time by making a deposit via the Production Deposit Link at top left. Your deposit will be confirmed by a return email along with your reserved hull number

Depositors will receive a notice 40 - 60 days before construction begins, and the full order with options should then be formulated via the links below and submitted using the F-22 Order check box when checking out.

Ordering online saves a management layer (less cost), and helps avoid any confusion - your final order will be used as the actual factory order. Progress payments will then be due 30 - 40 days before construction begins, payment procedure being as follows:

25% prior to construction beginning (initial deposit is subtracted off this)

25% when main hull and deck are made

25% when beams and floats are made

25% before shipping

Payments can then be made in several different ways when due, as is detailed at the end of the ordering process.

Refund Policy

Full deposits can be refunded prior to construction beginning, with just a $100 administration fee required. No interest will apply to deposits, and as exchange rates can vary over time, any refund will be equal to what was originally paid in the currency of country of residence. It will also be paid to that country, unless otherwise agreed.

Tu-22 History

During the 1950s the Tu-16 'Badger' bomber had entered service and served as the backbone of the Soviet Long Range Aviation Regiments. But in the mid 1950s speed was considered a bomber's main defence against fighters. Although the first air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles were being developed at that time, the bomber's primary opponent was the interceptor. The Tu-16 'Badger' was a subsonic bomber and the British and Americans were already running several development programs for supersonic interceptors. So a new supersonic bomber was needed.

The Tupolev OKB-156 design bureau was already working on supersonic aircraft in 1950-1953. So on August 10 1954 official authorisation for a supersonic bomber was given by the government to Tupolev. By the end of 1955 a design was finished called Samolet 105 and selecting of the aircraft components began. In December 1957 the prototype of the Samolet 105 was completed and flight trials began with the first flight on 21 June 1958. A redesigned Samolet 105A prototype was built and would be powered by the new Kuznetsov NK-6 engines. However it was not ready in time, and the VD-7M engines were used instead. The first flight of the 105A took place on 7 September 1959 and was subsequently lost on 21 December 1959 during the seventh test flight.

Before the loss the government authorised production at State Aviation Plant No.22 in Kazan and replaced the Tu-16 production line. The first three series produced Tu-22 bombers were finished in July-August 1960 and used for more flight trials at Zhukhovsky. The first flight of a production Tu-22 was on 22 September 1960. Onwards until 1965 multiple upgrades were carried out to fix problems with flight control systems.

The aircraft was first revealed to the public on Aviation Day 1961 over Moscow. NATO originally codenamed it 'Bullshot', then 'Beauty' and finally 'Blinder'. The air force ordered concurrent production of the Tu-22B bomber variant and a reconnaissance aircraft designated Tu-22R. Initial production batch was planned to be 12 and 30 respectively, but this was trimmed back to seven and five.

The Tu-22B bombers produced proved to be very trouble prone and were used primarily for training. They were accepted into service in September 1962 with the 43rd Combat Training Center (43 TSBP i PLS). After one year they were transferred to the 203rd Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment of the 46th Air Army.

The Tu-22R was also accepted into service in 1962 with the 260th Separate Guards Long Range Reconnaissance Regiment (OGDRAP) of the 46th Air Army and the navy's 15th Long Range Reconnaissance Regiment (DRAP) as part of the Baltic Fleet. In 1965 two additional regiments were raised, the 199th OGDRAP with the 46th Air Army and another navy DRAP attached to the Black Sea Fleet. The Tu-22R replaced the navy's Ilyushin Il-28R aircraft. The navy's Tu-22R fleet was in peak strength during 1969-1970 when it deployed 62 aircraft.

After only 15 Tu-22B bombers were produced the Tu-22B was dropped. By 1960 the primary threat of the bomber would be radar guided SAMs, not interceptor aircraft. The Tu-22 was designed to operate at high altitude, within the range of the SAMs. The design limits and lack of terrain following radar meant that the Tu-22 would not be able to operate at low altitude. As an alternative the Soviet air force decided to use its current bombers as missile carrier to launch stand-off strategic missiles outside the range of enemy SAMs.

The Tu-22K 'Blinder-B' was designed as missile carrier, but the introduction of intermediate range ballistic missiles were threatning further development of the Tu-22. The missiles were designed for the same continental range targets, the Tu-22 had been designed for. However the ballistic missiles proved to be ill-suited for strikes against maritime targets. The Tu-22K would be able to survive the political climate if it could strike the NATO carriers effectively. The K-22 (Kompleks-22) weapon systems was fitted to the Tu-22K missiles carrier and the Kh-22 (AS-4 'Kitchen') could be carried semi submerged in the bomb bay. Problems with the aircraft/missile combination, such as flight control, fuselage stress and fuel leaks occurred because the aircraft was not designed to carry such a large missile. The Kh-22 missile was accepted into service in 1964 before Tu-22K trails were completed.

Although viewed as a failure, Tupolev used its political pressure to avoid the program from being cancelled. During 1965 Tu-22K bombers were issued to bomber regiments, but it was not until 1967 when the testing was completed and the type was accepted into service officially. Three regiments of Tu-22K became operational in 1965, the 121st DBAP (Long Range Aviation Regiment), the 203rd DBAP and the 341st DRAP, all attached to the 15th Heavy Bomber Division of the 46th Air Army. Although it was reported that another regiment was serving with the Tu-22K in the Pacific Area with the 30th Air Army.

The Tu-22 had a bad reputation starting in the early 1960s when the first Tu-22Bs were rolled out. Air crews called the aircraft 'unflyable' and at a certain time crews refused to fly the aircraft. Design flaws in the aircraft made it difficult to fly and operate. The Tu-22K was pushed into service prematurely resulting in a high accident rate. The downward firing K-22 ejection seats could not be used during take off and landing, which were the most difficult and dangerous moments of flight. The high landing speed compared with the Tu-16 made transition onto the aircraft more difficult. The aircraft suffered from a tendency to pitch up. When landed flaws in the shock absorber caused the gear to collapse, when the Kh-22 missile was carried this could lead to fatal explosions. The pilot had difficulty seeing the runway when flying with cross winds. Crew attached strings and hooks to cockpit levers which were out of reach. Visibility from all stations were poor. Ground crews used specially built scaffolds to service the aircraft engines, but these were not always available. The ground crew had to wear specials clothing to protect them from toxic fumes of the Kh-22 missile fuel.

By the 1970s all flaws were worked out and experience with the type lowered the accidents. Nevertheless the Tu-22 was never popular and had the highest accident rates in the Soviet Air Force. 311 Tu-22 variants were produced, of which 70 were lost through 1975. Combat readiness was low resulting in a high loss-per-sortie number.

In the 1970s several air forces in the Middle East were interested in obtaining a more modern bomber than their Tu-16. The latest Tu-22M 'Backfire' design was not available for sale, so the countries wanted the Tu-22 'Blinder'. The first country to request the Tu-22 was Egypt, but the request was turned down. Export orders for Libya and Iraq were approved. Tu-22 production line at Kazan already ceased operation, so Tu-22R were converted to B configuration for conventional bombing similar to the original Tu-22A.

Iraq ordered 12 Tu-22 in 1973, one report says 10 of these would have been Tu-22B 'Blinder-A' aircraft. But in 1981 Iraq took delivery of 4 Tu-22KD/KDP and more than 200 Kh-22 and Kh-22M/MA missiles. The pilots were trained in the Soviet Union during 73-74 and the Tu-22K crews are reported to have been Soviet. The Iraqi Tu-22s were based at Al-Walid and saw action during the 1980-1988 war with Iran. The inventory after the war is reported to have been 5 to 8 aircraft, at least 3 Tu-22Ks have been lost. In January 1991, it was reported that 5 aircraft were still operational. In 2003 is was reported that these have all been destroyed by F-117s during Desert Storm, including one Tu-22U trainer.

Libyan Tu-22 Blinders were delivered from 1977 to 1983. The exact number remains a mystery, some say 12 to 18 while other reports only indicate 7 or 8 aircraft. The Libyan Tu-22s were based at Obka Ben Nafi Air Base near Tripoli. At least four were lost during combat in Chad and elsewhere in the 1980s. One of the Tu-22s was downed by a French NIM-23 Hawk battery, the cockpit section was found with inside all three dead East German crew members. It is thought that 6 to 8 Tu-22s remain in the inventory. These are probably not operational, given the low level of pilot training, shortage of spares and the Tu-22 maintenance problems.

The Tu-22 was used in a limited support role during the Soviet operations in Afghanistan. In October 1988 four Tu-22PDs were deployed to provide electronic warfare support for Tu-22M3 'Backfire-C' bombers operating near the border with Pakistan. The need for EW support arose because of concerns that Pakistani F-16 or SAM would be deployed. The Tu-22PD were replaced by other four Tu-22PD in January 1989. These saw little action and were withdrawn in February.

The Tu-22 never entirely replaced the Tu-16 as its intended. The Tu-16 had better range and could carry two Kh-22 missiles. Main role of the Tu-22 was that of long range reconnaissance platform, which it performed well after all the flaws had been ironed out in the 1970s. During 1991 the number of Tu-22s on strength were half the number produced. Reduced by attrition, exports and replacement. The Soviet Navy began retiring the Tu-22R fleet of the Baltic Fleet during the mid 1980s and disbanded the regiment in 1989. In 1994 also the other navy's reconnaissance regiment had been disbanded. Only six aircraft remained in service in 1991 as part of the Black Sea Regiment.

In 1991 the Soviet Air Force still operated 100 Tu-22K and Tu-22P and 55 Tu-22R outside Russia. When the Soviet Union collapsed the bombers mostly remained at their airbases in the Ukraine and Belarus. The Russian Tu-22s have all been scrapped in favour of the Tu-22M 'Backfire' replacement for the bomber and the Su-24MR recon aircraft which entered service in the 1980s. The number of Ukrainian Tu-22 continued to drop during the 1990s. It is reported that they remained in service until lack of spare parts. Most probably that have now all been scrapped.
