A Guide to Superyacht ETO and AV/IT Careers

eto job yacht

Following on from our guides on superyacht   deck,   interior,   engineering and chef  careers , it’s time to get technical and clear up some confusion around the roles of an ETO and an AV/IT officer. To keep us on track with the latest training requirements for both, we spoke to Scott Molloy of SEACertify to get his input for this latest guide courtesy of the careers guidance platform,   Academy by Ephemeris.

What is the difference between the role of electro-technical officer (ETO) and that of superyacht AV/IT officer?

The AV/IT officer role generally encompasses interior automation, entertainment, IT and some satellite systems. Essentially, they oversee the technology systems beyond the remit of a traditional ETO, which is mainly marine electronics.

Before the Manila Amendments to STCW, superyachts interpreted the ETO role to include the ever-growing consumer technologies and IT on board, but it is now more important than ever to distinguish between the two roles.

In practice, an individual can fulfil either or both roles, however AV/IT has nothing to do with the role of the ETO - they are completely different.

What size of vessel would typically have both an ETO and an AV/IT officer?

Generally a superyacht longer than 90 metres almost always has a dedicated AV/IT officer.  Below this length, a vessel is likely to have a crew member in another position assume the AV/IT role.

Whether the vessel has an ETO is less size related, but falls under two general scenarios:

Where the vessel has an ETO dictated on its Safe Manning Document (SMD). A flag state such as Cayman Islands is more inclined to ask for an ETO ticket amongst the crew when the vessel has diesel-electric propulsion, rather than the size of the vessel or the number of guests/passengers on board.

There is no ETO on the SMD, but the vessel/management have otherwise decided there is a crewmember with the job title ETO, as originally stated in the MCA’s MSN 1860 (now revised to MSN 1860 Amendment 1 )

What qualifications do I need to become an ETO?

As for all crew working on board, to be a superyacht ETO you need to have completed your STCW basic safety training (a five day course) and have a valid ENG1 medical certificate.

The ETO’s remit was covered by a new Certificate of Competency (CoC) under regulation iii/6 of the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments. All crew sailing under the job title of ETO should now hold this ticket.

Paragraph 1.5 of The MCA’s MSN 1860 Amendment 1  states that: “If you are employed on a ship as an ETO, you must hold an STCW ETO Certificate of Competency whether or not an ETO is listed on the SMD (safe manning document)”.

How long is the training to become an ETO and what does it involve?

The standard route (without a higher education in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent Electro-Technical subject) is currently three years.  A candidate requires sponsorship through a shipping company in order to complete five phases, split across college phases and sea time. The standard route leads to either a Foundation Degree or HND in Electronics and Marine Electrical Engineering.

All of the academic subjects, short courses and sea time required are offered within the route to enable a candidate to apply for a Notice of Eligibility (NOE). Once they have this, they can then sit the MCA Oral exam and gain their ETO Certificate of Competency (CoC) if successful.

Candidates must currently obtain at least 12 months of combined sea time and workshop skills, and have completed a Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) Training Record Book (TRB) while on board ship.

For those candidates with a higher level Electrical Engineering qualification or equivalent, there is now a fast-track cadetship route , which can take 18-20 months. This route is currently only being offered at South Shields Marine School. Candidates require sponsorship or approval from a shipping company to complete required sea and workshop time on this route.

Individual requirements vary depending on prior studies/sea time experience, which can be assessed by the Marine School. If eligible for this route, they can produce an action plan for a candidate to follow in order to obtain the required pre-requisites for their NOE. Once they have their NOE, they can then sit the MCA Oral exam and gain their ETO Certificate of Competency (CoC) if successful in passing the exam.

Ephemeris ETOs 1

How do I progress through the ranks as an ETO?

Only some large superyachts are required to carry an ETO under their flag state’s safe manning requirements for the vessel. Other yachts may still choose to have an ETO to compliment their technical department. But with usually a maximum of one ETO on board some of the large yachts, there isn’t the same career progression on board you would see on larger vessels, such as cruise ships that have junior through to chief ETOs.

On superyachts, ETO career progression more often involves moving onto new positions with more responsibilities and an improved employment package on other vessels. In either case, it is essential to compliment the continuing on-the-job professional development with further short courses such as vendor-specific training or by gaining AV/IT skills also.

For those willing to gain an MCA SETO (Senior Electro-Technical Officer) endorsement in their CoC, this will assist in career progression also.

This can be obtained as follows:

12 months' sea time as an ETO with an ETO CoC

HND/Advanced Diploma, Foundation Degree or Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

HELM(M) course completion certificate

High Voltage Management course certificate

Pass a SETO MCA oral exam

For more details on the SETO endorsement also see the MCA’s MSN 1860 Amendment 1.

With requirements in place for ETO certification, what is the current status for AV/IT training and certification?

A working group involving the relevant superyacht industry professional bodies and individuals has been developing a qualification framework for AV/IT training. This will result in crucial, yet non-mandatory, AV/IT training standards for the superyacht sector. The advantages include a new clear career pathway for superyacht AV/IT and also the creation of a new, easily recognised and industry-specific training standard. The most basic level of the qualification framework is close to launch, and once the independent assessment platform is finalised, may be completed within the next few months.

What is the working relationship between the ETO and the AV/IT officer?

On a vessel large enough to have both a dedicated ETO and AV/IT officer, they would both typically work under the chief engineer and be expected to assist each other as required, with some crossover of responsibilities possible. But most vessels are not large enough to have both as dedicated crewmembers, and they become roles. In these cases, the electrical/electronics role of the ETO and the technology role of the AV/IT officer fall to whichever other crew are deemed most suitable.

With thanks to Scott Molloy, Managing Director of  SEACertify  marine electronics training, and Spectral Marine , New Build AV/IT Consultancy.

Having chosen a marine career (good choice!) as your field of work, here is some information to help make your search wider. You are determined to find a job at sea then we offer you a suitable option for that- an electro technical officer.

An electro technical officer is one of the most important people on a vessel, especially when it comes to his/her expertise of handling electrical equipment of the vessel.

For those who are interested in maritime jobs , a ship officer handling the electrical supervision of the vessel can be a suitable career choice. As an electro technical officer, your main duty would be to ensure functioning and maintenance of electrical equipments on vessel.

Electro Technical Officer

What does an electro technical officer do?

An electro technical officer handles several responsibilities on vessel mainly related to electrical systems. Like most jobs at sea, as a ship officer handling electronics on a vessel, you are most likely to work under a chief engineer who supervises everything on a ship. And while under a chief engineer, your ship jobs would include the following things.

  • Maintenance and working of electrical equipments on board
  • Working of electrical parts like engine rooms, radio communications, electronic navigation needs like echo sounders, Gyro compass, Weather Fax, auto pilot, RADAR system , Broadcast and internal aerial system, telephone and talk back system and satellite communications
  • Look into basic electric needs like refrigeration , bridge systems and control rooms
  • Maintenance of emergency systems including emergency switches, fire alarms and detectors
  • Vessel’s electrical components like navigational lights , battery backups and electrically operated propelling machinery
  • Assist chief officer in handling routine works especially related to electrical handling
  • Coordinate work with on shore technicians
  • During emergencies, an electrical officer plays important role like every other ship officer. You would be required to handle the emergency situations and ensure all the equipment needed for safety is always ready
  • An electro technical officer looks into electrical and technical aspects on a vessel. Hence working of computer controlled machinery would be supervised by an ETO.
  • An electrical officer is immensely important on cruise ships and passenger vessels which have huge electrical requirements and unmanned technology handling them. Everything from refrigeration to air conditioning on such vessels would come under your supervision as an electro technical officer.

What are the knowledge and skills needed to be an ETO?

An ETO can be seen as a higher version of anelectrical officer. The qualifications and qualities needed to become an ETO are

  • A foundation degree in electrical/engineering/electrical engineering/marine engineering  field
  • An electrical engineering degree- a minimum Bachelor’s level qualification
  • Electro technical training like STCW 95 basic safety training course including fire fighting, fire prevention, elementary first aid course training
  • ENG1’ seafarer’s medical certificate and/or certification for physical and mental fitness
  • Training for handling electrical, navigational and communication equipment
  • A course in Electro Technical engineering (optional but not necessary but may come as an added advantage)
  • As Per New STCW-2010 Manila amendments, Elector technical officer has to obtain certificate of competency from Maritime Authorities  by applying for exams conducted by them.

Besides a simple Bachelor’s degree in engineering, as an aspirant of an ETO post, you can also take up additional short term diploma courses of full Bachelor’s courses dealing with electro technical handling and maintenance. Besides these qualifications, for a person seeking careers at sea, you must possess following qualities too.

  • Physical strength to handle heavy duty on board work
  • Mental fitness
  • Ability to stay away from family for long intervals
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to handle practical situations
  • Independent decision making capacity
  • Task prioritization and organization
  • Ability to keep calm and not panic under emergency situations
  • To be able to work under a senior while maintaining a team of your own
  • Flair for circuits and wires ( a must)

What is tentative remuneration?

Like most jobs at sea, the salary of an ETO greatly varies with the experience you own, the kind of responsibilities you handle and the rank that you work on. However, even with so many variables, ETO remains a highly paying job among all careers at sea. As an ETO, you can expect a salary of $3000 to $5400 per month. Those working on bigger cruise ships can expect even up to $10000 per month depending on the size of the cruise ship and the duties handled.

The biggest advantage with this particular option among all maritime jobs is that it is a new field. Since electrical aspect and IT on vessels has combined on recently, not many people have been duly trained to handle them both together. With increasing need for such people, there are immense opportunities for people to make use of their knowledge and skills. Work handled by an electrical officer now needs expertise of an ETO now. Considering that, it seems viable that this option among all marine careers should be seen as a highly lucrative choice by most mariners.

You forgot to mention there is no promotion available for this kind of officer,so no salary increase during your life time as others do.

@ Martin: Yes. This post does not have any promotion aspects but there will be salary rise as per the industry standards but not like engineers or deck officers who will be getting salary as per their promotion.

Electrical Officer is most degraded Job on Merchant Vessel .He undertakes job may be slightly less than an oiler.Full career he is doing operational level unlike the other engineer who barely know Electrical /Electronic sits on top as Chief Engineer .The present Manila amendments dosen’ do anything good for the Electrical officer .The designation changed and more lengthy process to get struck in that job .So I would say that Electrical Officer /ETO doesn’t offer a career progression. So aspiring person who like to join Merchant navy look for a Mariner Engineer ladder and not Electrical ladder .

i am b.tech ec final year student can i join eto but i uses specticals 1.5d.

I am b.tech in electrical (EEE) decipline student in final year can i join ETO in superior progression level

Sir may i joine E.T.O ,iam B.Tech Electronics communication Engineering please explaine about ability and qualification

ETO are the best when it comes to electrical troubleshooting and prevention of damages. Unlikely chief engineers hiding problems until someone get injured or the damage is too big to be handled simply because they don’t want to show their weakness in competence and do not understand in full the electrical theory. ETO should take major decisions onboard on the electrical side in agreement with chief engineer and not being subordinate, that’s why he is onboard. It will be always too late until IMO recognize that ETO carrier is no different from the engineers career because the have the same technical background and study and spend the same time at sea!!!!!

do not take ETO route: they pay you next to nothing, expect you to troubleshoot every system that is moved by signals/sdensors/electrons ….on board with no help whatsoever. You are left alone.

and then dump you like a garbage when the technology progresses and they will double the systems like on an aircraft to cut costs on wages.

believe me, shipping industry is very very short sighted, and least considerate to the human being

exemple of technological redundancy is th on board Radio Officers. Those technicians were very qualified in electronics, and the industry did not manage to retrain by simply update a little with the high voltage electrical systems/generators in the engine room and some CPU controllers update.

I am current ETO officer that knows what he is talking about.

Good luck and choose a shore based industry.

My Dream Is to joint merchant nevy, But As i am ECE Engineer so i have only option Is Electro Technical Officer (ETO).

@Monzur: Yes, you can.

@Prajwal: Job market is not that great as of now. There is no harm in doing the ETO course as ET officers are required onboard ship.

Sir, Government had issued notice to the institution that, their responsibility to provide 100% jobs for their student. Is it true news? and how seriously institutions follow it.

Dear Career makers !!!

today’s date much more job shortage and cadets are comes in this merchant navy line, special ETO,GME Batches, don’t joint merchant navy career. The Bachelor & post graduated holders are comes to here with much more career hopes & they are also invested lots of money in this line, sometimes for middle class family that much of money is not affordable, but due to fake agents easily traps to aspirants/students regards job prospectus & unnecessarily agents also takes money from it. also agents are gives much more sailing waiting period for that cadet, those gay’s whose expended total money & age of career.

HI, can I join cruise ships after completing ETO course and not container ships… I finished my EEE in engineering. Also which is the best collg in South India to join ETO course? What is the career scope after 3years in this field?

Helo sir iam working as a assistant refrigeration engineer in cruise ship i have 9 years in this field is that possible to to do eto caurce i did air conditioning and refrigeration diploma caurce

@Chiranjeevi: Cruise ship companies will only take experienced ETOs. It will be difficult to get into a cruise shipping company. You will be joining as a trainee ETO and post 3 years you will be working as Sr. ETO.

In case of eto will they get the salary promotion according to their experience

Can an eto become chief engineer

@Nidheesh: No, he/she cannot. However, an ETO can shift to engine department by applying for Class IV exams to become a 4th engineer. After that, you can proceed on a career of a marine engineer to become chief engineer.

You will be joining as Trainee ETO and after a certain experience, you will be promoted to ETO. ETO is the only and the highest position on the ship for an electrical officer.

I’m from the field of Instrumentation and control engineering. Is it possible for me to undertake ETO course?

@Kavin: Yes, You can.

May cousin is a license electrical engineer on the vessel. It is posible he is apply for to be a captain of the ship? Even he ddnt study a marine transportion course but he has working as a ETO. In merchant vessel. Thnx in advance if ever you ever you answering my question

Is doing ETO course a good option for a long term ?

@Manoj: entirely depend on your career interest. even if you become successful ETO, but do not enjoy the job, I will not consider it as a long term option. Practically, the job market is yet to improve for a new joiner (be it engineer, deck officer or electrical engineer)

@Louis: No, he cannot.

Hello I am nitin grover, basically from india. Currently pursuing MBA in Canada. I have taken bachelors of electronics and communication in 2010. After that i have 2 years experience in translink metro as project engineer in india. Then i joined merchant navy as electrical officer for 5 years with reputed company. Can someone guide me how and where can i apply for job in shipping industry to continue my career in same field in canada.

Regards Nitin

Which institute is better for eto according to you ? which give 100% placement after complextion? Eligibility creteria of eto?

Sir, I have 2 years job experience in DG systems …will it help me to get high pay job if I go for merchant Navy course now?

@Saurabh: You need to have a CDC to get a job on the ship. Also, you need to fulfill the age criteria too. Looking at the job market, it is very difficult for a fresh marine engineer or deck officer to get job on ship.

I want to join Trainee ETO AT cruise ship. Is it a better option than Cargo ship . What are the salary of ETO on cruise.

Sir I got 67% in 12 but in PCM only 48 % and completed b.tech in electronics instrumentation with 65 % so I am eligible or not. And in maths 33% in 12th.

@Athrav: If you want to pursue an ETO career, you can enter with your b.tech degree.

@Ahamad Khan: It will be extremely difficult to get a trainee job on a cruise ship. You need to complete your training in a cargo ship. For entry-level, there ain’t any difference.

sir I’m completed grd after completion of eto course u will provide 100% placement for me.or give me suggestions how to get placement as traine ero

Sir I completed my diploma in EEE 3 years course with 74%. Now I want to join in marian as eto. So I have to complete the 4 months course in eto . What is the fee for 4monts course.

sir i have completed b.e in electrical engineering. my age is 31 i wants to join merchant navy as eto. is there would be any problem about age in future for permotion. and which college is better for placement. what about the placement in tmc shipping college after eto course….

Kullai: Depends on the company you join. As you will be joining as trainee ETO first, you will be earning USD 200-500.

Hi I am IT I fitter also done apprentice ship Nctvt ship repair companies I have indian cdc with stew certificate. How can I get job in marchant navy.

I’m feel depressed now I wanted to move on field job it’s better to move or I can barrow money and pay to agents to get job in Marine filed… Guid me plz sir…

Hello, I’m still a student taking Bs Electrical Engineering. I found this ETO career very interesting. Is it possible for a fresh grad student to be an ETO? or do I still need an onboard experience first?

@Ajay: The seafaring industry is going through a hard time in terms of jobs and freshers are most hard hit by it. The wise option would be to find an alternative job for the time being and continue searching for the ETO jobs side by side.

Yey: You need an onboard experience as Trainee ETO along with Certificate of Competency for ETO.

Sir, i hv completed diploma in mechatronics .. am i eligible for ETO Course

@Navin: Yes, you are.

Sir which is good eto college other than AEMA, TMI, anad GEIMS?

@Anubhav: That institute which is giving sponsorship for the training.

Sir, I completed my b.tech in EEE and have an experience of 3 years in my field. Now i wanted to switch so i thought of joinining eto course. will it be helpful? Am i going to get any benefit of my experience? Or getting a sponsorship will make any difference?

@Sandeep”” You are eligible to join the ETO course. Your experience will help you understand the field. Sponsorship is important looking at the current job scenario as freshers are not getting jobs and they are kept in waiting for more than a year to get the ship experience.

Sir, i have completed my 12th with 50% and diploma in electronic and telecomm with 75% and BE in electronic and telecomm( with a gap year with 55 % am i eligible for the ETO course ? And if yes what are the job prospect after completing the course ?

@Tanmay: Yes, you are eligible academically for the ETO course.

Hye, i had finish my study in bachelor marine in electric and electronic tech.. and i have a cert ssa, bt, btoct, dsd, and bsom.. what type of ship can i joint? And can u suggest a best company for me to start my new job? 🙂

@Nassie: You also need to do basic STCW training courses. You can join any type of ship which needs ETO on ships.

Hai sir i completed my diploma in electronics and communication engineering i eligible for eto course ?

@Arjun: Yes, you are eligible.

Most Filipino Electro Technical Officers are actually Electrical Engineers and Electronic Communication Engineers But before we can get certified as Electro Technical Officer at MARITIME INDUSTRY AUTHORITY here in Philippines, They require a lot of training’s for ETO. WAKE UP ALL ETO, We are educated during our college degrees, we studied Bachelor of Science in Engineering, we studied a lot from Electrical Engineering but these does not credit on our Marine Profession. And what sucks most even English course are included for the very expensive training’s , why won’t they evaluate and compare ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CURRICULUM to lessen the gap in marine electrical profession. We already studied controls and instrumentation, motor design, electrical designs, programmable logic control and etc. We studied Electrical Engineering for Five years and our diploma and License as Engineers must be credited on board.

sir which good carer between eto and g.m.e or fourth engneer

Sir I have completed 4 months eto training from BP MARINE Belapur Any vacancies for Trainee ETO??

@Swarajkumar: We are not into job palcement or assistance.

I’m a building electrician for 3years…and I’m interested to be an ETO.. can I take it?

If you have a degree or diploma, than you can pursue ETO course.

sir i’ve a degree in electrical and electronics eng. what should i do next if i have to pursue this career

You need to take courses for STCW certification. Few institute provides training to get the required qualification.

Sir, I have C&G levels 1,2 &3 respectively in Electrical Engineering.

Can put in for ETO.?

I have done my B. Tech in 2012 and my age is 30 Can I join marchant navy as eto

The Age limit for the ETO course is-35 years…Yes you can.

Yes, you can.

I really appreciate you for publishing this blog here; it’s really a helpful and very useful for us. This is really appreciated that you have presented this data over here, I love all the information shared. Great article!

Modern vessels are furnished with sophisticated electronics which requires skilled handling and occasional troubleshooting, so ETO or Electro-technical Officer is an important member of the Engine Crew who operates and maintains all computer operated machinery onboard.

If elaborate, ETO’s job profile usually includes:

  • Working with and repair of electronic equipment such as Automated Engine Room Controls, High Voltage Systems, pumps, maintenance of ME alarms;
  • Keeping in order ship’s electrical components for instance lighting system, emergency batteries, navigational lights and so on;
  • Faults detection and troubleshooting on the bridge: upkeep of navigational equipment i.e. radio, echosounders, Gypocompasses, DP system, etc.;
  • Maintenance of cargo systems and cranes electrical components.

Electro Technical Officers’ salaries may fluctuate slightly depending on the vessel type. For example, the wage rate for Bulk Carriers and Container Ships vary from USD 4 800 to USD 5 500 . Salaries will be a bit lower - around USD 4000 for Heavy Lifts, Multi Purpose ships, Reefers and similar dry bulk vessels, but there are some decent exclusions.

General Cargo vessels and Coasters are at the bottom of the list with about USD 2 500 - USD 3000 wage rate this position.

ETOs are in demand among crewing managers focusing on tanker fleet. Oil Product Tanker and Chemical Tanker ETOs will be offered from USD 5 500 to USD 6 000 and for LPG/LNG carriers stakes go even higher to USD 7 000 to USD 8 020 per month.

Offshore fleet recruits a lot of Electro Technical Officers as well. Wage rates vary considerably. For most unsophisticated AHTS, PSV, Seismic vessels, AHT, etc. it will constitute USD 150 - 180 per day. Bigger and/or more technically advanced vessels will offer USD 200 - 220 and more per day. Incidentally, ETO’s salary at Jack up rig will begin from USD 300 daily.

Lured by Oligarch’s Cash, Soccer Star Enlivens Dagestan

eto job yacht

By Seth Mydans

  • Sept. 11, 2011

MAKHACHKALA, Russia — Here in the dangerous mountains of Dagestan, an elite soccer player from the top tier of the game ran out onto the green field of a tiny stadium on Sunday to begin what he said was an adventure into the unknown.

The player, Samuel Eto’o , 30, was bought just last month from the Inter Milan soccer club in Italy by a Russian oligarch for a sum that sportswriters say makes him the world’s highest-paid soccer player.

He has left behind a life in the limelight on the European circuit to play for an obscure team here in Makhachkala, a city so unsafe that he will fly in only to play, as he did this weekend, and then fly out again to Moscow, where he and his team live and train.

In his first home game, Mr. Eto’o scored one of two goals in a 2-1 victory over Volga. Supporters chanted his name and the name of his new club, Anzhi. As he walked off, small boys ran out to touch him, chased and sometimes tackled by security men with black batons.

His new club’s owner, the oligarch Suleyman Kerimov, signed the Cameroonian player away from Inter Milan, putting an unusual twist on a brilliant career that has included three European Champions League titles with Barcelona and Inter Milan, as well as a gold medal in the Sydney Olympics in 2000 with his national team, making him the biggest name ever to play for a Russian team.

“I have already swept all possible awards, and I’d like to start a new stage in my career,” he said at a news conference at the stadium.

“Anzhi’s new history is just beginning, and I want to go all the way from A to Z with the club. I will be happy to write my name into this history.”

All of this has puzzled many soccer players and others who follow the sport.

“I really think that in choosing to go over there to Russia he has to some extent signed his sporting death warrant,” said a former goal keeper of the Cameroon national team, Joseph-Antoine Bell. In transferring to an obscure club, he said, Mr. Eto’o is squandering the twilight years of a great career.

Clearly the money drew him: $30 million per season, according to news reports, although team officials deny disclosing that figure, calling it a trade secret.

Mr. Kerimov has promised to build a new stadium to replace the city’s run-down facility that now seats fewer than 16,000 people.

It was not clear how much Mr. Eto’o knew about Dagestan, a mountainous region on the western shore of the Caspian Sea that has surpassed Chechnya as the most violent republic in the North Caucasus.

Dagestan’s violence grows from a seemingly intractable knot of clan and business rivalries, religion, separatism, crime and extortion, feuds, and vendettas whose roots run deep into its region’s history.

Every year, according to reports, 100 police officers are killed here.

On the night before Mr. Eto’o’s arrival, two gun battles were reported in Dagestan, killing five people.

“Plenty of people will be looking out for my security, and if I took this decision it’s because I don’t consider that my life or that of my family are in any danger,” he said on his Web site. “I’ll travel there on the day of the match or the eve of the match and then I’ll go back to Moscow. It’s that simple.”

A team official said that Mr. Eto’o’s wife and children would live with him in Moscow.

Many people who live here, beaten down by poverty and almost daily violence, appear to be watching the billionaire oligarch’s indulgences without rancor. Dagestan has an unemployment rate of at least 40 percent and survives on subsidies from the Kremlin that make up 75 percent of the region’s budget, said Biyakai Magomedov, of the newspaper Chernovik.

“The baron does what the baron wishes,” said Kamil Isayev, 39, manager of a telephone shop, using a phrase that echoes the feudal nature of Dagestan. “He decides where his money goes. He spends here, he spends there.”

Soccer fans, of course, were thrilled.

“Now he’s ours, he’s a Dagestani,” said Magomed Dosanov, 22, a professional boxer as he waited outside the stadium to see Mr. Eto’o. “Soon we’ll have everything. It all starts with soccer.”

Mr. Kerimov, 45, who like many in Dagestan is more interested in wrestling than in soccer and is chairman of the board of trustees of the Russian Wrestling Federation, made his billions in oil, mining and finance and is now reported to be worth $7.8 billion.

He has spent tens of millions of dollars since he bought the Anzhi club in January to buy big-name soccer players, and the team’s position in the standings has been creeping upward. Foreigners now make up 30 percent of the team.

Some say he is spending his money to further political ambitions with a demonstration of civic-mindedness. Some say he is fulfilling a pledge by regional oligarchs to Vladimir V. Putin, the prime minister and a former president, to put some of their money into local projects.

Or he may just want a soccer team. Buying teams and players has itself become a sport among Russia’s so-called oligarchs, who mostly got rich in the 1990s by cornering natural resources after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

“It’s just like he’s collecting mistresses or diamonds or yachts, just a demonstration the extent of his wealth,” said Andrei Piontkovsky, a political commentator in Moscow. “It’s the classic style of the nouveaux riches. There’s no soccer industry here. You can’t make money by running a team, you can only spend money.”

The best known among these sporting oligarchs is Roman Abramovich, who bought the Chelsea soccer club in 2003. Another, Alisher Usmanov, is a major shareholder in London’s Arsenal soccer club.

Vladimir A. Antonov, a banker, bought England’s Portsmouth Football Club this year. Mikhail D. Prokhorov, who is now a presidential candidate, owns the New Jersey Nets.

Some Dagestanis take pride in the reflected glory of their oligarch.

“All people know about Dagestan is guns and bombs,” Mr. Isayev said. “Now they will know that there is a soccer player here too. This is definitely the biggest more-or-less good news in recent years.”

An article on Monday about the excitement in the Russian republic of Dagestan generated by an elite Cameroonian soccer player hired by an obscure club there that is owned by Sulyman Kerimov, a Russian oligarch, misstated the salary of the player, Samuel Eto’o. He is being paid $30 million per season, not $30 million over three years.

The article also erroneously included a wealthy American industrialist of Russian descent among a group of sporting oligarchs who have purchased or sought to purchase professional teams. The industrialist, Len Blavatnik, never expressed interest in purchasing the West Ham United team of Britain. So it is not the case that he “tried and failed in an attempt to buy West Ham United,” a rumor that had been generated by a speculative article in the now-defunct News of the World tabloid on July 11, 2010, which was refuted at the time by Mr. Blavatnik’s representatives.

Putin rattled after Moscow ‘under attack from biggest ever drone strike’

Moscow came under one of the largest attacks yet by Ukrainian drones since the start of fighting in 2022, further rattling Vladimir Putin as he attempts to fight Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region.

The Ministry of Defence claimed that Russia downed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 11 destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 over the Bryansk region, six over Belgorod, three over Kaluga and two over Kursk.

Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel: ‘This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones.’

He said strong defences around the capital made it possible to shoot down all the drones before they could hit their intended targets.

Some Russian social media channels shared videos of drones apparently being destroyed by air defence systems, which then set off car alarms.

Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, reported a ‘mass’ attack on his region but that 23 drones were destroyed.

The moment the Russians shot down a Ukrainian UJ-22 kamikaze drone with a 500 miles range.

While Ukraine has been bogged down in a land conflict in eastern Europe in which the Russians have been driving forward slowly at a heavy cost to both sides, Kyiv has also been attacking Russia with drones.

Ukraine has targeted oil refineries and airfields in an attempt to weaken Russia’s fighting potential, and has also targeted the capital several times.

The drone attacks come as Ukrainian forces are continuing to push into Russia’s western Kursk region.

The daring incursion into Russia has raised morale in Ukraine with its surprising success and changed the dynamic of the fighting.

A major kamikaze drone strike by Ukraine on capital Moscow

But it is uncertain how long Ukraine will be able to hold the territory it has seized in Kursk.

It has also opened up another front in a fight where Ukrainian forces were already badly stretched.

The gains in Kursk come as Ukraine continues to lose ground in its eastern industrial region of Donbas.

The Institute for the Study of War, a think tank based in Washington, said in its daily report late on Tuesday that the Ukrainians had made additional advances in their incursion, now in its third week.

The Russian state news agency Tass reported that 31 people had died since Ukraine’s attack on Russia began on August 6, citing an unnamed source in the medical service – figures which are impossible to verify.

Update: Divers Retrieve 5th Body From Mike Lynch Yacht Sunk Off Sicily

eto job yacht

Italian search and rescue teams have retrieved a fifth body from a sunken yacht off Sicily, where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and Morgan Stanley International chair Jonathan Bloomer are among those feared to have died.

The body was recovered Thursday morning as search on the wreck resumed for a fourth day, according to an Italian official briefed on the operations who asked not to named. No statements identifying any of the bodies have so far been issued officially.

A total of six people likely were trapped and died inside the Bayesian when it was hit by a tornado near Porticello, Sicily, on Monday, according to authorities. Adding to the complexity of the search mission is the “narrowness of the spaces” inside the sunken yacht and “the presence of many objects,” the coast guard said.

Overall, of the 22 passengers in the boat, 15 were rescued on Monday and one victim was formally identified.

Yacht Insurer OMAC Is Hull Carrier for Sunken Yacht in Sicily, Sources Say

Authorities are meanwhile investigating exactly how the luxury yacht sank — and why it sank so quickly — in the early hours of Monday morning, with the captain and other survivors answering questions from the local prosecutor’s office, according to local media.

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch said it’s also probing the incident, with questions surfacing around the expansiveness of the yacht’s mast and the state of the hull.

“Right now there is no evidence that the mast has been snapped,” coast guard spokesman Vincenzo Zagarola told Bloomberg News. “We can also say that, so far, there is no evidence that the hull has been broken. But we don’t have a clear idea yet of the full damage.”

Crews aided by military ships, remote controlled underwater vehicles and helicopters have been searching for missing passengers since Monday. Six guests, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, and nine crew have been rescued. The body of Recaldo Thomas, the ship’s chef, was found soon after the Bayesian sank.

eto job yacht

Lynch and his daughter Hannah, Bloomer and his wife Judy, and Clifford Chance partner Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda were identified as the missing passengers on Tuesday by authorities in Sicily.

Lynch, 59, and his family were celebrating his recent acquittal from fraud charges with a small group of advisers when the violent storm struck. The charges stemmed from Lynch’s sale of his software firm Autonomy Corp. to Hewlett Packard Co. in 2011. The Silicon Valley giant went on to accuse Lynch of accounting failures. He’d spent years working to clear his name in court and restore his reputation as one of Europe’s most successful entrepreneurs.

A little over two months before the yacht accident, a San Francisco jury found Lynch not guilty of criminal charges that he duped HP into overpaying for his company. He was still fighting HP in a civil case in London, where a British judge held him responsible for creating the illusion of a company much larger and more successful than it really was.

Rescue workers have had difficulties gaining access to the yacht 48 meters below the surface, citing the depth and position of the vessel’s hull.

“The search will go on as long as necessary,” Zagarola told Bloomberg. “For sure the whole hull will need to be inspected meter by meter.”

Family clings to hope of air pocket in sunken superyacht as debris hampers search

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers searching for six missing people from a superyacht which sank off the coast of Sicily told NBC News Wednesday that debris inside the vessel, as well as its depth, were making their job difficult.

As hopes of finding anyone alive dwindled, the divers said that they had managed to force open one of the Bayesian’s access doors but access to the cabins where people could be trapped was being hampered by detritus.

The divers, who were not authorized to speak publicly, added that the depth of the wreck meant they were left with only 10 minutes to search the 184-foot yacht once they reached it. Then they had to return to the surface, they said.

On Wednesday, the dock where they set off from was swarming with vehicles, boats and rescuers. Nearby tourists, reporters and photographers have gathered, eager for news. Helicopters occasionally fly over the area.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the yacht remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

Rescuers said Tuesday that there might be people trapped inside the cabins, especially considering the timing of the storm, but that they had so far been unable to check through the ship’s portholes.

“The operations are long and complex,” Italy’s national fire department, whose diving teams have been participating in the search, said on X .

Italy's coast guard also said Tuesday that divers were also using a remotely-operated underwater vehicle to aid in the search.

Sailboat sinks off Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized near Sicily’s main city of Palermo in what Italian officials called a “violent storm.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers and Bloomer, who testified in his defense, on the trip.

Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told the BBC on Tuesday the family was “coping the best we can” and he was hopeful there might still be air pockets inside the hull.

Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello and Yuliya Talmazan from London.

Claudio Lavanga is Rome-based foreign correspondent for NBC News.

Steve Jobs' former yacht Venus collided with another superyacht off the coast of Naples

  • Venus, the yacht built for Steve Jobs , collided with another yacht off Italy's coast.
  • It's unclear which yacht struck which or when exactly the crash occurred.
  • With a minimalist design, Venus is one of the world's most iconic superyachts.

Insider Today

Venus, Steve Jobs' former superyacht — now owned by his wife, the philanthropist and investor Laurene Powell Jobs — has collided with another superyacht off of the Italian coast.

A spokesperson from Powell Jobs' Emerson Collective who spoke with a crewmember confirmed to Business Insider that Venus, the 78-meter yacht Steve Jobs commissioned, had collided with Lady Moura, a 105-meter yacht. The collision happened on July 22 off the coast of Naples, Italy.

The spokesperson said that only crew were onboard the yacht and that both boats were anchored when a sudden change of wind led to the collision.

Venus is cruising in the Ligurian Sea, while Lady Moura made its way to Mykonos on Wednesday, based on publicly available tracking data from Marine Traffic.

Videos posted on social media show the strikingly minimalist Venus and the Lady Moura coming into contact. It's not clear from the videos which superyacht struck which, though someone who said they were aboard the Lady Moura seemed to blame Venus' crew on social media, SuperYacht Times reported. The person said the damage was "only a scratch, albeit a significant one that will be costly to repair."

Others on social media said that the Venus appeared to be moored and that Lady Moura seemed to have swung into the boat. BI hasn't been able to independently verify either claim.

Related stories

The Italian Marina Militare didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. The owner of the Lady Moura couldn't be reached.

No matter how little damage may have been done, insurance will probably cover it. Yacht insurance , which can cost six figures each month, is one of the largest costs incurred by yacht owners.

Venus, built by the top yacht-builder Feadship, was delivered after Jobs died in 2011 and was worth $130 million upon completion. The Apple cofounder was heavily involved in the design process alongside the French architect and decorator Philippe Starck.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck spent four years working on her design, the designer told Vanity Fair , holding monthly meetings to discuss her specifications. She has six identical cabins, was built to maximize absolute silence, and, upon delivery, included the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes." August 7, 2024 — This story has been updated with a statement from a Laurene Powell Jobs spokesperson.
