Barbados is known for its beautiful, pristine beaches. So of course, there are many water activities available such as jet-skiing, surfing, boogie boarding, and paddleboarding. But what if you want to do something a little different? Luckily, Barbados also offers many different catamaran cruise options! Let’s take a look at some of the top Barbados catamaran cruises and tours.

In this article:

Planning your trip to Barbados?

These are some of my favorite resources for booking Barbados travel.

✈️ Flights: I’ve had the best luck finding Barbados flight deals on Skyscanner . (Use airport code BGI for Bridgetown.)

🚗 Rental Cars: DiscoverCars has easy car hire pickup from the airport or town.

🏨 Hotels : Booking has good hotel and resort deals around the island.

🏠 Vacation Rentals : Check out VRBO for rentals and beach houses.

🌴 Guided Tours & Activities: Get Your Guide and Viator are my go-to’s.

Why Take a Barbados Catamaran Cruise?

Barbados has some of the best Catamaran cruises available. How could it not with its crystal clear waters and abundant sea life?

Taking a Barbados catamaran cruise is not only a great way to explore the area, get closer to nature, and see the island from a new perspective. Some Barbados catamaran cruises offer a luxurious experience that will leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed, and pampered. Some experiences focus on snorkeling and adventurous water activities.

Most cruises offer a meal of some sort and some even offer wine as you step aboard the boat. No matter what you choose, get ready to have a wonderful, memorable catamaran experience!

What to Look for in a Barbados Catamaran Cruise

When looking at Barbados catamaran trips, consider what activities you want to be included in your package. Some catamaran outings offer tours, some offer snorkeling, and some offer multi-course meals with bottomless drinks.

Ensuring your expectations line up with the planned activities on the catamaran trip will make sure you have the best experience possible.

Another tip is to check the catamaran departure and return time for your selected trip. Make sure it aligns with any other activities you have planned. For example, if you want to be back at your hotel by lunchtime, make sure the catamaran trip itinerary matches your desired timeline.

Types of Barbados Catamaran Cruises

There are three main types of catamaran cruises in Barbados – private tours, sunset cruises, lunch and snorkel cruises.

  • Private Catamaran Tours.  These are great for people who are seeking a more exclusive event. The catamaran is reserved just for the individual’s group, making this a perfect option for hosting a special event like a wedding, a date night (think proposal!), and even a honeymoon activity. Private tours are customized to your requested length of time and preferred activities.
  • Sunset Cruises.  Sunset cruises are exactly what they sound like. These catamaran cruises typically begin in the late afternoon and continue into the evening. Unlike private tours, sunset tours have established start and end times as well as pre-planned activities and meals. Most sunset cruises will include activities like snorkeling and dinner. This option is perfect for travelers who want to experience a Barbados sunset on the open water.
  • Lunch and Snorkel Cruises.  These catamaran snorkel cruises offer tasty lunches and snorkeling at some of the best spots around the island. Swim among sunken ships while admiring diverse marine life and even sea turtles! Cruise-goers will also enjoy sipping drinks and relaxing on the boat while sailing up the West Coast of the island. These cruises also have set start and end times and pre-determined activities. Perfect for travelers who want relaxation and those who want a bit of adventure.

Let’s take a look at the top catamaran cruises available in Barbados. All of the cruises listed below have great reviews on TripAdvisor and knowledgeable captains.

With over 500 excellent reviews on TripAdvisor, Calypso Cruises has a lot to offer. Calypso Cruises provides all three types of cruises – private tours, sunset cruises, and lunchtime snorkel cruises. Captain Nick has wonderful reviews for being a fun, well-informed ship captain.

Maxing out at 12 people per cruise, Calypso Cruises is best for small groups and intimate outings. Cruises last 3-5+ hours depending on which package you select.

I’ve gone on the Calypso snorkel cruise several times and it’s always one of the highlights. FAQ: Taking a Catamaran Cruise in Barbados

How much is a catamaran cruise in barbados.

Catamaran cruises in Barbados typically cost between $75 and $150 USD per person for a half-day, non-private charter. Usually, this includes several hours of exploring, snorkel equipment, drinks, snacks, and a meal.

How long is a Barbados catamaran cruise?

Catamaran boat trips typically last anywhere from a few hours to a half day, depending on the offer you book. When you make your reservation, your captain will tell you when to meet the boat and what time you can expect to return.

What do you wear on a catamaran cruise in Barbados?

Most Barbados catamaran cruises are casual and involve lots of swimming, so I recommend wearing a bathing suit with an easy coverup or tee shirt for when you want sun protection. A hat is nice to have for keeping the sun off your face, and you’ll definitely want to bring sunscreen and sunglasses. It’s also a good idea to bring a quick-drying towel so you can dry off between snorkel sessions. On your feet, a pair of flip-flops is fine since you’ll take off your shoes before you get on board.

The Perfect Packing List for a Catamaran Charter

in Caribbean , Travel Tips & Resources on 05/19/18

catamaran cruise one week

What to bring on a catamaran vacation? This article will help you pack!

Going on a Catamaran Soon? Here is the Perfect Packing List

Have you just booked a Catamaran Charter and wondering what to pack? If so, you will want to read this article.

I was in the same boat like you. It was my bucket list dream to travel the British Virgin Islands by a catamaran. Once the trip was booked it was time to start thinking of packing and buying some new clothes. If you are like me, you have a tendency to overpack. This was one of the first trips I actually wore almost everything I packed. Once on the trip, I learned what I would bring and what I would not.

First things First- A Rolling Duffel Bag

I don’t even own a rolling duffel bag! One week prior to the trip I was convinced I would bring a suitcase. Two days prior to the trip I was convinced I needed a rolling duffel bag by all the packing lists I read. My friend going on the Catamaran strongly suggested not to bring a suitcase. Turns out everyone was right! I would have been sleeping with that suitcase! There isn’t any room onboard to store large bags in a catamaran stateroom.

My wonderful husband took his motorcycle parts out of the only rolling duffel bag that we own the night before our departure. He had to clean it because it smelled of oil and gas. TSA loved my bag! I had a TSA card in the bag when I arrived in Fort Lauderdale and my outfits were not in the order I had packed them in. At the St. John airport five TSA personnel were surrounded all around my bag. My husband used a duffel bag to pack but it didn’t have wheels. He threw his back out and had to book a Massage prior to getting on the boat and a chiropractor once he got back. Lesson learned, buy a rolling duffel bag!

catamaran cruise one week

How am I going to bring all of this?

I laid out all the outfits out on my bed. How am I going to bring all of this? Here is what you really need.

Packing List

  • Swimsuits- We had a seven-day charter so I packed 3 swimsuits. You will spend a lot of time in the water snorkeling and swimming. 3 swimsuits were the magic number. My husband packed two.
  • Rashguard for sun protection- when you spend a lot of time in the water and sun a rashguard will offer sun protection and dry quickly.
  • UPF Light Weight Sun Shirt- My favorite one is the Hanalei Full Zip Hoodie from Title 9. I had never ordered from them before and I lived in this lightweight sun shirt every day.

catamaran cruise one week

This is the best lightweight UPF shirt for summer

  • Another Favorite Item, I wore almost every day and wish I had purchased a second one is the Dream Skort from Title 9   The material is lightweight and dries fast if it gets wet. It is so comfortable you will want to live in it which I did. Sports bras, sports tops from Title 9 or Athleta that dry quickly are the clothes you will want to wear. I did bring yoga pants but it was too hot for them to wear. Stick with the skorts instead. The key is lightweight and breathable materials that dry fast.
  • Sundresses- Sundresses are perfect for the evenings whether you visit a restaurant, bar, or stay onboard for dinner. I packed three since we had three dinner nights ashore.

catamaran cruise one week

  • A Book- If you like to read bring a good book to read. I only had time to read one but if you enjoy reading you may want to bring two just in case. Check out the best seller list of new reads from Amazon
  • Sunscreen- A high SPF & facial sunscreen
  • When it comes to make up keep it light. You won’t wear as much as you think you will. Lipgloss, eyeshadow, blush, waterproof mascara, and a tinted moisturizer with SPF is all you need.
  • The salt water dries out your skin- bring a travel size skin moisturizer.
  • You can not bring hair curling irons or hair dryers. Just pack a styling gel or trial hotel sizes of shampoo & conditioner. A coconut hair oil spray helped get the tangles out when I couldn’t wash my hair. Your cute hair ties come in handy with pony tails and braids with wet hair. Tip- put your wet hair in a loose braid and once it dries you have natural, wavy hair.
  • Snorkeling Equipment – Check with your charter and see if they supply snorkel gear. I like to bring my own. This is what I travel with.

  • Do you have a themed planned? We had a Hawaiian Night, a Colorado Night, and a Nautical Themed Night for the dinners on board. Themed nights create a fun photo opportunity. Pack outfits accordingly. Nautical wear is always perfect for a boat cruising.

catamaran cruise one week

A Nautical theme is perfect for a Catamaran Charter.

  • A swimsuit cover- up to wear on the islands or on the boat after swimming. Pack one or two.
  • A tank top and shorts to sleep in. It can be hot at night all I wanted to wear was a tank top and shorts. I buy mine from Victoria’s Secret. Bring two or three pairs of pajamas for a week long excursion.
  • Two pairs of inexpensive sunglasses with a sunglass Croakie cord. You will have a back up pair in case you lose a pair in the water.
  • Check to see if your Charter provides Beach towels. If not buy one as a souvenir in St. John or bring one. I didn’t need to bring mine, one less thing I could have packed.
  • Shoes- Flip flops and a sturdy water shoe. You will not need gym shoes or high heels. I did not bring water shoes and I wish I did. We hiked rocks and wet rocks and I did it in blingy flip flops. They were definitely the wrong shoes!

catamaran cruise one week

Bring sturdy water shoes. I had hiking boots but not good, so I wore blingy flip flops on these rocks as the waves would crash. Really bad idea! (Photograph by Captain Kevin Hughes)

  • I seldom wear shorts so I often opt for a skort instead. However, I packed one pair of linen shorts and a t-shirt. It’s a good outfit for day onshore shopping or going to a bar.
  • Check the weather, I packed a long sleeve Athleta Beyond Soft sweatshirt for the evenings. I never wore it because it was too hot.
  • Wet Wipes- Water is precious onboard. I love showers but wet wipes were easy to use as a substitute shower and to stay clean. Just don’t flush them down the toilet.
  • Ziplock bags- aka A Sailor’s Wallet. My friend recommended packing each outfit in a Ziplock bag. This was a great idea. Our clothes stayed fresh. In the case of our friend’s cabin- they forgot to latch their window and their cabin was soaked. Luckily they had packed their outfits in plastic bags so their clothes were dry. You can use these for wallets and cameras when going ashore.

  • Pool Floatie – A boating trip is the best excuse to float on the water. Check with your Charter company and see if you can Amazon Prime your float directly to them. I shipped my Gold Swan directly to Soulshine Charters in St. John via Amazon .

I’ve got my Veuve and Goldie Swan

  • If you are a light sleeper pack ear plugs. I actually had a hard time sleeping because of the waves and new sounds I was not used to.
  • Don’t forget your passport!
  • Every restaurant and bar in the Virgin Islands took Visa. American Express not so much.
  • The British Virgin Islands will accept US $$. I used my Visa card for the majority of my purchases. Bring cash to tip your crew.
  • Your favorite high-end Champagne or wine. Check with your charter on what is included. I knew I wanted to have a Veuve Champagne moment onboard!
  • Sun Hat with tie string- It can be windy so bring a sun hat with tie string to tighten it. My favorite brand is Wallaroo. The Julia sun hat is UPF 50+ too. It is worn in the above photograph.
  • Games- Our charter had many games onboard to play. Check which ones they have onboard before your trip.
  • Sea Bands and Bonine- Everyone swore the Bonine works the best. I wear the Sea bands and I haven’t gotten sea sick wearing them.

After our charter, these are the items I would pack again on a future charter. It’s not fun to pack too much and not wear it. In the case of a Yacht vacation, less is more. Hope this helps. Don’t forget to take a ton of photographs so bring your waterproof camera.

Luxury Yacht charter Cancun Catamarans Sailing Riviera Maya

Cancun sailing vacations Catamaran

Our trip sailing the waters just off the Yucatan Peninsula's northeast coast provides a taste of the excitement and luxury combined with exploration of beautiful white sand beaches, rich local Mayan history and pristine underwater wilderness unique to the regions spectacular reefs and atolls. You can get a perfect vacation on most of  Riviera Maya along  the coast of the Mexican Caribbean and combine with a few days aboard of our luxury catamarans. We offer Catamarans, Sailboats, and Luxury Yachts to accommodate up to 8 people in 4 cabins, from 3 days cruise to one week you can use to take an Island tour for south of Mexico and Belize coast. This cruising vacation gives you a glimpse of the less-traveled path and introduces you to the quaint island lifestyle of Isla Mujeres, the beautiful beaches and natural parks of Contoy and the historic ruins reserved only for those of us under sail.

Guests are amazed by the abundant sea life they encounter on this extraordinary vacation. From dolphins, sea turtles and beautiful coral to the amazing whale sharks, this experience is one which will create memories of a lifetime.

For the cost-conscious traveler looking for a convenient escape to paradise, this is the perfect opportunity. Major international airlines as well as charter airlines have direct or connecting flights to Cancun every day. Now more than ever Cancun International Airport is easily accessible from almost every major city in the world. From the United States, you can take advantage of extremely affordable, direct flights. Leave your home in the morning and in only a few hours youll be enjoying the beautiful waters of the Mexican Caribbean from the bow of our catamaran.

Upon arrival into Cancuns international airport, our  limo transfer  take you on a 25-minute ride to our departure base located at Marina Hacienda del Mar, in the north of Cancun. At five oclock we welcome you aboard with a cocktail as we get to know each other and discuss the plan for the coming days.

  Day One:

After a light breakfast, we begin our first sail for Boca Iglesias. Around the ocean side of  Contoy Island , on the way, well enjoy some fishing in hopes of securing a catch of the day. Upon arriving at Boca Iglesias well view the ruins of a 16th century Spanish Colonial Church, wherein 1523 Francisco Montejo Jr. led an expedition ashore and was attacked by the local Maya. To reach the ruins will be a day of adventure, but prior to our arrival, we stop to snorkel in search of octopus and lobster. After lunch on board, we start our journey to the Church.

To reach the abandoned site of Boca Iglesias we navigate through the mangroves and walk through a dense jungle. During the hike, keep your eyes to the trees which are home to the local spider monkeys. Following our excursion, we return to the yacht for a relaxing dinner and cocktails.

  Day Two:

In the morning, we set sail to the island of Cayo Sucio (Dirty Cay). We break up this two-hour sail with a stop at Coco Reef for some amazing snorkeling. Upon arrival at Cayo Sucio, our crew will prepare lunch while you can explore in the sea kayak or swim and snorkel nearby. Today, After lunch we invite you to relax on the beach or snorkel just off the coast where you may encounter a wide variety of sea life including turtles and manta rays. These waters are also a popular location for whale shark viewing! One of the largest living fish species, the whale shark is a gentle giant and poses no danger to snorkelers and divers. They do offer a spectacular photo opportunity and can be a definite highlight of the days activities

  Day Three:

We awake to the smell of fresh coffee and enjoy a delicious breakfast prior to our sail to  Isla Mujeres , The Island of Women. The story of Isla Mujeres provides a colorful history that explains how the island got its name. In 1517, when the Spanish expedition led by Francisco Hernandez Cordova, landed here they discovered a stone temple filled with female shaped Mayan idols. These idols represented the goddess Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. Today, Isla Mujeres has earned the reputation of being the regions more laid back and relaxing island offering a quaint little downtown with local shops, beautiful beaches, and restaurants.

During this 2 hour sail to Isla Mujeres, we stop for a quick dip and some snorkeling before we arrive at Villa Vera Marina. Here we hop on a golf cart for a tour of the island, stopping to take in the sights of downtown followed by lunch back on the catamaran. After an afternoon of sailing around the island and exploring the beaches, we head back to the marina and enjoy cocktails prior to dinner ashore and exploring the entertainment options of downtown Isla Mujeres.

  Day Four:

After breakfast we set sail south navigating the bay waters and the coral reef stopping on the way to enjoy the spectacular snorkeling in the waters of El Angel Reef and the sunken shipwreck of Triunfador, then we sail back to Cancun and our home base at Hacienda del Mar Marina where we say our goodbyes and exchange emails to share our wonderful photos and memories of an unforgettable vacation.

Itinerary of your cruise

To avoid the flood of tourists as well as the Meltemi wind, which is particularly strong in the Cyclades during the summer months, GlobeSailor has put together a 7-day itinerary for the Saronic Gulf, enabling you to discover some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful gems. We've kept cruising and navigation periods short and confined to the morning to let you make the most of the destinations, the local culture and of course... to give you time to relax. This cruise is sure to keep everyone happy!

Day 1 : Athens - Poros (about 30 nautical miles) The crew will meet you at 14:30 at the Alimos Kalamaki marina. Your boat is located on pontoon 9, between place 914-927. You will be welcomed with a welcome drink before attending the briefing of your skipper and leaving the moorings around 3pm. A lunch prepared with local produce will be served during the crossing. You will anchor in Poros at the end of the day. This island will seduce you with its old-fashioned charm and pastel-coloured houses and traditional taverns. Dinner at your leisure. Day 2: Poros - Hermion (about 21 nautical miles) You will leave Poros and head for the Tselevinia Islands for a relaxing stop. You can take the opportunity to jump into the blue waters and take a dip before lunch. You set sail again towards the south of the Peloponnese. You will stop at Hermione, a fishing village, mentioned by Homer in the "Catalogue of Ships". Once ashore, you will have free time to explore each alley of the old town. Dinner at leisure. Day 3 : Hermione - Spetses (about 11 nautical miles) You set sail again towards Spetses, an island with a sweet jasmine scent, very popular among Athenian high society. You will anchor in the old port before exploring the island on foot or even by horse-drawn carriage. You can discover the lively district of Dapia, with its shops, cafes and restaurants, and also see the impressive Poseidonion Hotel built in 1914 to develop tourism. Dinner at your leisure. Day 4 : Spetses - Dokos (about 5 nautical miles) Breakfast, then departure for Dokos, a wild and uninhabited island completely untouched by tourism. A favourite place for sailors, its idyllic anchorages, such as the bay of Skintos, will make for an enchanting stopover. Take a seat around the table and enjoy the delicious local dishes prepared by your hostess, then get out your fins, mask and snorkel to observe the extraordinary sights under the water. Dinner on board. Day 5 : Dokos - Hydra (about 7 nautical miles) The crew hoists up the anchor and heads to one of Greece's most beautiful islands, Hydra. You will appreciate the peaceful atmosphere that prevails on this island where motor vehicles were banned years ago. As your day is free, you can explore the island at your own pace and discover the Assumption Monastery, the Museum of Archives and many others. Climbing to the top of the hill overlooking the city, you will have a breathtaking view of the port. At the end of the day, the colors are even more spectacular. Lunch and dinner at your leisure. Day 6 : Hydra - Perdika (about 22 nautical miles) Your cruise continues a little further north. You will stop in Perdika, a charming fishing village located southwest of Aegina. Its rocky beaches are beautiful. We recommend you pick a spot on one of them and take a swim or relax under the warm sunshine. You can taste delicious local seafood by visiting the fish market which is located near the port. This evening you will enjoy dinner at your leisure while admiring the sunset. Day 7 : Perdika - Athens (about 21 nautical miles) Why not start your day with a morning swim? You will spend the morning on Moni (nature reserve, located just 1 mile from Perdika) and meet hundreds of peacocks, unique inhabitants of the island. Moni’s crystal-clear water is perfect for a snorkeling session. After lunch, it will be time to set sail again for Athens. You will dock at the marina around 18:00. To end your trip in style, we recommend a short getaway to the ancient city to visit Acropolis and its archaeological treasures. Dinner at your leisure. Day 8 : Athens Your disembarkation is scheduled after breakfast, around 9am. Please note: It is possible that your crew will not be present on board for the last night at dock. Indeed, the crew enjoys spending time in a real bed between cruises. In this case, the skipper will give you all necessary instructions to follow to have your cold breakfast before departing the boat.

Jack and ema were wonderful

We really enjoyed our time on the sea. Jack and Ema were so friendly and knowledgeable of each port. They made recommendations on where to go and made sure that we were taken care of the entire time. Ema’s meals were delicious and she always created a peaceful atmosphere.

Honestly the best holiday we have every had!

From the first email enquiry, to stepping off the boat with a heavy heart...this was a dream come true. AMAZING service from Francesca with the quotes and booking and for arranging something extra special for my birthday on board too. The boat was excellent and plenty of room for all to either have some alone time, or be with the other guests. Very comfortable cabins with plenty of space and many options for seating, lying down, sun tanning on board. Jack and Emma were legends and we had so many laughs and they were the perfect skipper and hostess and just lovely people. The experience and knowledge they both have in so many different topics was brilliant and we couldn't imagine another sailing trip without them. Emma fed us the most delicious and varied menu. All so so good and was always so much food that nobody ever went hungry...and she did all of this with a massive smile on her face too. Could not recommend this experience more highly! Thank you for make my dream of a sailing holiday come true, and giving me the best 50th birthday I could ever imagine....we WILL be doing another cruise, that's guaranteed.

Fantastic experience

This was a dream vacation. Our skipper Jack is a true sailor, Very knowledgeable of the Saronic Islands, super skilled at sailing. He kept us well informed of the schedule all along the way. We had some higher level winds the week of our trip, and he adjusted the schedule slightly so that we could take advantage of getting good time under sail, but still found a quiet protected cove that would allow all of us to have a great night sleep. Hostess Emma, is warm and friendly, putting everyone at ease. She is a great cook, the meals were all fantastic. She is also very knowledgeable of the islands and restaurants and shops, giving helpful tips at each stop. Before boarding we were a little unsure how the comfort of the cabins would be. Happy to say the beds are approximately Queen size, easily accommodates 2 tall adults. There were enough cubbies and drawers to put all our clothes and toiletries in without issue, but would recommend that you pack light. (It is a little like glamping.) The boat itself has many different areas to lounge or sit. It allows the passengers the choice of interacting or getting time to themselves. Also good options for sun or shade. The very best part of the trip was all the swimming and snorkeling. The water is just incredible. There are multiple opportunities to get into the water each day. I highly recommend taking advantage of every stop..

Awesome way to meet new friends (cabin booking)

We booked a cabin and was concerned with the tight quarters with strangers. I would say don't fear! It was a wonderful way to make new friends and the boat is roomy enough that you can have your privacy or hang out and visit. Captain Jack and Emma were wonderful in insuring everyone was safe and having fun. I would definitely do this trip again.

Bella esperienza

A presto!

Great cruise with a great crew

Emma & Jack are a great crew, skilled and friendly. They help, support and cuddle the people on the boat across the week spent in the lovely Island of gulf of Saronico. Special mention to the boat Marmar, kept by George in a very good shape. Lovely first week of honeymoon. Thanks Emma & Jack :-)

Croisiere reussi

Bellissima crociera

Splendida vacanza , skipper (Jack) molto competente, Emma (hostess) ottima cuoca e ottimo supporto tecnico nella navigazione, rotta splendida e mare perfetto.

Ottima accoglienza

Prima esperienza in catamarano, l'abbiamo trovato confortevole e mediamente pulito. Tappa a Hydra estenuante.

Traumhaft! alles super! empfehlenswert!

I Spent A Week On One Of The World's Largest Cruise Ships, And This Is How Much Food They Actually Need For 6,000 Passengers

About 16,000 bottles of wine and 30 tons of meat are served every 7 days on one of the world's largest cruise ships.

Spencer Althouse

BuzzFeed Staff

Hey! I'm Spencer , and I love cruises. I just got back from my eighth sailing, this time traveling through the Mediterranean on one of the world's tallest cruise ships. I'm always fascinated by how much food it takes these massive ships to serve everyone on board, and I managed to get a private tour of the galley and their off-limit decks, so here are some of the wildest things I learned.

Man in swim trunks sitting on beach chair holds a small cup of food, with text "this was so good" and a red arrow pointing to the cup

To give you an idea of how much food they go through each week, you need to understand how big the 6,000-passenger ship actually is. I traveled on Sun Princess , which is over 1,100 feet in length, meaning it's longer than three football fields put together. This 21-deck ship is by far the tallest I've ever been on, and it weighs nearly 178,000 tons, which is almost 400 ~million~ pounds. Okay, now onto the food!

A person stands in front of a cruise ship with "Sun Princess" on the side. The ship is described as being longer than three football fields

1. In total, 180 tons of food supplies are loaded onto the ship for every weeklong voyage. That's about 400,000 pounds of provisions, which, to put into perspective, is just shy of how much the Statue of Liberty weighs. Below is what some of that food looks like when stored on the lower decks. The left pic, for example, shows a crewmember loading potatoes, which is a tough job when you consider that the ship goes through over 13,000 pounds of potatoes each week.

Two people load large plastic containers onto a pallet of potato sacks in a ship's kitchen. Text reads, "13,200 pounds of potatoes are loaded each week."

2. They also load about 50 tons of beverages onto the ship. This includes over 16,000 bottles of wine and champagne, along with upwards of 120,000 bottles of beer.

3. The ship I just sailed on had 28 different bars on board, and they served over 200 unique cocktails, the most popular being Piña Coladas and strawberry daiquiris. Most cruise lines offer unlimited alcohol packages to their guests, which usually cost between $50 and $80 per day. I did the math, and depending on which line you travel with, you typically need to order at least five beverages each day to get your money's worth.

People holding various drinks, including a strawberry daiquiri, with text reading "this strawberry daiquiri was so good."

4. But if coffee is more your style then don't worry. They serve about 6,000 cups of regular coffee each day. And that's not even counting cappuccinos, espressos, iced coffees, and so on.

A cappuccino cup filled with soup and foamy broth

5. Between seated dining, buffets, specialty restaurants, room service, and more, the culinary teams are responsible for 8,000–10,000 meals every single day. In other words, a typical seven-day voyage can serve upwards of 70,000 meals.

Several fruit plates stacked on a trolley, ready to be served. Text: "Here are a bunch of fruit plates that are about to be served."

6. And that means the machinery in the galleys (i.e. the cooking areas) is absolutely massive. Below is a picture of me standing next to one of the giant mixers, which was about to prep 440 pounds of pizza dough at once. For reference, I'm 5'11" (a real 5'11", not a Tinder 5'11").

Me standing by a large dough mixer in a commercial kitchen, the mixer can mix 440 lbs of dough at once

Passengers consume about 1,500 pounds of flour during every seven-day period, but I guess that makes sense when you think about how many pizzas and pastries get made.

7. I've traveled on four different cruise lines, and I think non-cruisers are always the most shocked to learn that none of the food on board is pre-cooked. This means that the galleys basically have to cook for 1,500 guests at a time during each dinner service. After one round of dining is done, they immediately do it all over again for the next service, and so on.

The galleys are divided into sections based on each type of food: meat, fish, soup, salad, dessert, etc. They're also U-shaped so waiters know exactly where to go when they need to grab certain dishes to serve.

8. Believe it or not, all of the pastries and desserts are made from scratch too. Below are some photos I took to show what that process looks like. For example, on the right you can see the different stages of how they prep hundreds of cheesecake dishes to be served during a dinner service.

A massive baking carrier with hundreds of unbaked pastries stacked on top of each other on trays

9. Thousands and thousands of pastries and desserts are made each day — I personally had a donut and Danish every single morning with breakfast, and I have no regrets. This means the ship has to go through a lottttt of eggs and milk. To be exact, 3,900 dozens of eggs and 1,700 gallons of milk are stocked for each seven-day period.

Three chefs in a kitchen preparing pastries, with a "Before" label in the top left

10. Cruises go through a lot of meat and fish too. About 30 tons of meat and 15 tons of seafood are loaded onto the ship every single week.

A gourmet dish featuring beef tenderloin, lobster claw, asparagus, baby carrot, ravioli, and a potato puree, beautifully plated on a dark plate

11. But if you're a vegetarian or a vegan then you shouldn't worry. Exactly 28 tons of vegetables are brought on board each week. In fact, guests consume over 2,200 pounds of fresh salad alone in that same time period.

A chef prepares multiple bowls of salads with various vegetables in a kitchen. The image text reads, "this chef was prepping sooooo many salads that were about to be served."

12. Of the 6,000 passengers on board, about 4,300 are guests and 1,600 are crewmembers. The culinary team makes up 20% of the total crew and is comprised of chefs and stewards, i.e. those who clean all the food equipment and prepping stations. These people are responsible for making allllllll the food that gets served from the 26 (!!!!) different galleys on board.

Stacks of clean plates with small portions of food in a commercial kitchen. Text reads, "they have to wash so many plates every single day."

And that doesn't even include the 400-ish crewmembers on the dining staff. These are the people who serve and prep the food at each restaurant and buffet. Basically, food is a 24-hour operation on cruises, so they even have people working overnight to help keep guests fed and happy.

13. All of this food obviously means that there's a lot of trash on board, and since real estate on a cruise ship is super important and expensive, they recycle and "digest" as much as possible. For example, there are 15 biodigesters to help eliminate food waste. All the soft foods get put in them, which basically act as a stomach to break and grind everything into a “slurry." Yes, this room smelled as bad as you think it did.

A bin labeled "soft food" containing uneaten food scraps, including bread, vegetables, and meat, to be processed by a biodigester

14. All of that food is then placed in a dehydrator so the moisture can be removed, and it gets reduced by eight times its original size. Here's a pic I took of the end result, which sort of looks like coffee grounds or dirt.

Metallic industrial dehydrator machine with green components. Red arrow pointing to a button with text "this is the dehydrator."

15. Finally, I was shocked to learn that all of the water on board is actually made from seawater. The ship basically uses evaporators and does something called "reverse osmosis" to purify everything and separate the salt, turning the seawater into fresh water. The water is then filtered, which makes it safe for everything from drinking to showering.

Man using chopsticks to eat sushi in a restaurant, text above him reads "all of this water...", with a red arrow pointing to a glass of water

And, no, the water didn't taste weird or anything like that. It just tasted like regular filtered water! Plastic water bottles were also available on board, but there were some self-serve fill-up stations for passengers like me who brought their own reusable bottles too.

I'm personally a huge fan of cruises and the food on board, but let me know your own thoughts in the comments!
