And whilst cruising the Mediterranean might not impress Christopher Columbus, the fact is from Barcelona you can explore the entire picturesque Costa Brava coastline, full of golden sands, hidden coves, fishing villages and Roman fortified towns.

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

KIWIS ON TOP AT LOUIS VUITTON PRELIMINARY REGATTA

Barcelona, once again, put on its finest display today on day two of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta with outstanding sailing conditions for the sailors and wonderful viewing opportunities for the spectators. All along the Barceloneta beachfront and at the free-to-enter Official Race Village and Fanzones, the crowds were out in force for a spectacle of high-octane racing at its very best.

The standings show that Emirates Team New Zealand sit on top of the leaderboard tonight and today, the Defenders of the Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup, were on it right from the start. A first race against INEOS Britannia was sublime with Peter Burling and Nathan Outteridge tying Ben Ainslie and Dylan Fletcher up and forcing them off their foils in the final approaches to the start line. From there it was all one-way traffic, and the Kiwis romped to a 52 second win.

The Kiwis second race was against Orient Express Racing Team in the last match of the day, but unfortunately the French had to retire ahead of the start with what skipper Quentin Delapierre described as a “major issue” that could not be resolved on the water, but Delapierre confirmed they would be back for racing on Saturday.

Speaking afterwards, Blair Tuke, Flight Controller and Trimmer for Emirates Team New Zealand was pleased with day but still saw the bigger picture saying: “Well we had a great start against INEOS, real battle there, they haven't been shy in throwing the boat around in the pre-start and we’ve been seeing that for a number of days now, and so we knew that was coming, and I guess we just got the better of them there with that last minute double tack that we executed better, got on the inside of them and they flopped off the foils so race over. So good for us, it was a well-executed start, you know we've come into this series really wanting to get the most out of it. We don't get that many opportunities to get battle hardened so we are trying to get as much out of every race as we can and we’ve certainly done that so far.”

For INEOS Britannia, it was their second straight defeat today, but the team are well aware that this regatta is a warm-up in their eyes for the Louis Vuitton Cup starting on the 29 th August. Talking about the race Sir Ben Ainslie said: "it was a shame because it's over at the start. We made a mess of the execution on the double tack, they did a really nice job of getting inside us to force us of the foil so, shame, a missed chance to line up against the Defenders and after that we just had to make our own way around the course. Performance wise there was a bit difference in headsail choice which is quite interesting, so a few things to take away. Obviously disappointed with the start but this is why we're here, and we will try and get that right for the next one.”

Performance coach for INEOS Britannia Xabi Fernandez, echoed Ben’s views saying:“A tough day and we feel like it was a missed opportunity to measure ourselves against the Kiwis. We went for a move that was, I would say, not aggressive, but we tried something new in the start box and the double tack didn’t happen."

Asked about the difficult start to the regatta for the British crew, Fernandez commented: “It’s not been the start that we wanted but, you know, we have been here before, and I think we are able to see the big picture. When you start to line up with the others and you have some new data it’s amazing what you can improve and learn, so the mood in the team is good.”

NYYC American Magic also had two races today with the first against Alinghi Red Bull Racing being a superb opener to the second day of racing. NYYC American Magic aced that encounter by 56 seconds after a solid start and first cross, but then faced down the significant challenge of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli where they succumbed to a 40 second loss, having been forced high by the Italians on the starting line in the final approaches.

Paul Goodison, port helm on ‘Patriot’ was positive about the day, saying: “Like every team, we have to learn how to dominate the start box. I think anybody who is out there and dominating the starts is going to be really tough to beat. We did a great job of that in the first race, got off clean, and managed to get our nose just in front. From there we sailed really well, were able to dominate the sides of the course we wanted to and slowly stepped away – which was really, really promising. We had a similar plan for the second start, but it didn’t go our way. The Italians did a good job of holding us outside the line, which was tough for us. But the reaction on board was really good, the way we kept communicating, and we didn’t let it turn into an easy runaway. So, all-in-all, quite a positive day.”

Arnaud Psarofaghis, skipper of Alinghi Red Bull Racing, was sanguine about their first loss of the regatta and saw the positives in defeat, saying: “It was a really interesting race in all aspects. We just misjudged the start, came back a little late to push American Magic but they nailed it really nicely, from there the race was won and they really locked the game down, and so we just tried to sail our boat well and try to get as much data as possible to see what we can improve for tomorrow and mainly for next week. But really positive day for us, massive learning and I mean we didn't win the race, but we learned a lot of stuff.”

Francesco Bruni, helmsman for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, who looked remarkably slick all around the racecourse, acknowledged the challenge before them but was pleased with how the team raced today, saying: “It's a positive phase for the team, and for sure the boat is going well. The team is sailing well, but we have to stay focused because things can change very quickly from one day to another and we know that all the teams are looking at us and looking how to improve, so we have to keep improving that's the most important thing. We can’t just say ‘okay we are good, we are fast’ because if we stop improving, it’s going to be at the end so yes, we had a good race with a good day but my mantra is just to keep, keep, keep, improving.”

For Quentin Delapierre of Orient Express Racing Team, it was a tough day but he kept things in perspective saying: “Yeah nothing major just a little thing on the FCS (Foil Cant System) so I mean we will fix it for tomorrow. I think today, it wasn’t super important for us to go against the Defender, but the next few days are really, really, important for the team, so we just wanted to make sure that the boat will been in shape for all the next few days.”

The weekend brings more incredible action out on the glistening waters of Barcelona and the forecast is looking promising for Saturday but a complete switch in wind direction on Sunday. The race for the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta is heating up – don’t miss a second of it.

America’s Cup: Team NZ win preliminary regatta, but lose to American Magic in intriguing day

If there was ever the illusion that any of the America’s Cup teams were unbeatable, it has well and truly been shattered now.

On a revealing final day of the preliminary regatta in Barcelona , it was made clear that any team is capable of having their moment on the Mediterranean.

Results-wise, Team NZ came away with the regatta title, beating Italian team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli by 34sec in a gripping final, after losing to American Magic earlier in the day.

“It definitely wasn’t our prettiest work,” Team NZ starboard helmsman Peter Burling said after the final.

“We made life pretty hard for ourselves but absolutely stoked to walk away with the win. If you can make that many mistakes and still win a yacht race, it’s been a bit of a tough day for us with that first one as well, but we’re really happy to take this win.”

While the Kiwi crew celebrated the win, the day gave them plenty to ponder, with the races prior to the final likely to be of far more interest to the competing teams as they prepare for the challenger series which begins in just four days’ time.

An added layer of intrigue that comes with the Cup being raced in Barcelona is the impact of the sea state on racing and there was a glimpse of that on finals day with a decent bump on the water in winds towards the bottom end of the range.

While there were no major splashdowns and, for the first time in the regatta, every team completed their allotted races, every coach mentioned just how difficult the lumpy seas made things, adding another element to what is already some strong competition.

For Team NZ they will come away from the final day of the regatta with plenty to ponder, dropping their first race of the campaign when they were left in the wake of American Magic, but executing well in the final to draw a penalty on Luna Rossa in the pre-start to get away to a strong start.

Luna Rossa overcame their early deficit to push the action against the defender, taking the lead briefly, before a couple of aggressive moves from the Kiwis drew back-to-back penalties on their Italian counterparts which ultimately gave them space to guide Taihoro to victory.

For the Kiwis, it came off the back of a loss that was decided off the starting line. It looked even as the teams split the course, though the Americans clearly had their eyes on the left and it soon showed why as they picked up a good shift off the line and led at the first cross, only extending from there on their way to a 28sec win.

In the day’s other races, Ineos Britannia again had issues with unforced errors in their starts but were able to get the better of French entry Orient Express Racing Team.

In arguably the most aggressive performance of any team in the regatta, Alinghi Red Bull Racing managed to make a statement despite a losing effort against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

It kicked off in the pre-start, with the Swiss giving themselves plenty of room to dial up a charge to the line, approaching it at pace and catching Luna Rossa out as the Italians tried to burn time before the line. The Italians were forced over the starting line early and the Swiss got off to a flying start.

While they gave that lead up with a bad manoeuvre on the second leg and weren’t able to get the lead back, they sailed with confidence and intent in their decisions in a display of smart match racing tactics.

The teams will now take stock over the coming days, with the races that count beginning later in the week.

Although Helly Hansen is a favourite among outdoor enthusiasts, I must admit that my experience with their gear has been limited. The brand is well-regarded in mountaineering and sailing circles, but my pursuits lean more toward hiking and trail running.

Given this, I approached the Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket as something of a novice. My introduction to it came during a visit to the American Magic team in Barcelona , where I was gifted the jacket. Since then, it has become a staple in my wardrobe, accompanying me on various adventures, including a recent outing with the Amflow PL Pro .

My appreciation for the Foil X Jacket has only deepened over time. In fact, I believe it’s currently the best waterproof jacket available for any non-extreme activity. That said, I used it for mountain biking, and it worked just fine, so strike that last bit.

While the Foil X Jacket is undoubtedly a premium product with a price to match, its features, design, and comfort more than justify the cost. If you’re in the market for a new waterproof jacket this autumn, the Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket should be high on your list.

Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket review

The Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket was launched in spring 2024 and is available to buy now at Helly Hansen US and Helly Hansen UK for a recommended price of $600/ £500. Currently, the jacket isn’t listed on Helly Hansen’s Australian website. As such, AU price and availability are TBC.

The Foil X jacket is available in women's and men's versions. If you’re planning on using it for sailing, you can buy matching waterproof overalls for $400/ £400. Men’s sizes range from extra small to XXXL, while women can buy the Foil X jacket in extra small to extra large sizes. The coat is available in two colours: Cobalt and Ebony.

The Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket was designed using feedback from American Magic professional sailors. American Magic is a professional sailing team and one of the challengers in this year’s America’s Cup. Helly Hansen is one of the sponsors of American Magic and has been heavily involved in the team's preparation for the race.

According to the brand, every detail and feature of the Foil X Jacket is optimised for aerodynamic performance, allowing quick manoeuvrability and full protection. From the 4-way stretch fabric that enhances your range of motion to the Velcro straps that ensure a perfect fit around your waist, it's clear that Helly Hansen has thoughtfully considered every aspect of this jacket.

The Foil X Jacket is part of Helly Hansen’s Professional range, which uses cutting-edge Helly Tech waterproofing technology. Helly Hansen Professional garments have a hydrostatic head (HH) rating of over 20,000mm. They are also extremely breathable (over 20,000 g/sq.m/day) and fully windproof.

Some of my favourite features include the tall collar lined with brushed fleece, which not only feels comfortable but also keeps the wind away from your chin and neck. Speaking of chins, the Foil X Jacket has a brushed tricot chin guard, ensuring the YKK AquaGuard zips don’t cause any unnecessary rubbing.

One aspect that reveals the Foil X Jacket’s sailing-oriented design is the placement of its pockets, which are positioned lower than those on hiking jackets like the Mountain Equipment Makalu Jacket or The North Face Stolemberg 3L DryVent Jacket . While this may make the jacket less ideal for backpacking, it’s a small trade-off for such a remarkable piece of gear.

Another excellent feature of this jacket is the removable hood. Sure, it makes sense for such a hardcore waterproof jacket to have a hood. However, it also makes sense for a coat designed for sailing to have a removable hood since you might be out boating in broad sunshine. Plus, it’s nice that the hood doesn’t flap around in the wind when there isn’t that much rain.

With its 3-layer construction, the Foil X Jacket is heavier than lightweight shells like the Arc’teryx Beta Lightweight Jacket . However, this added weight translates to superior comfort—the materials are soft, pliable, and produce minimal crinkling noise as you move. The fully sealed seams enhance water resistance and significantly reduce chafing, while the absence of shoulder seams ensures the jacket won’t irritate your shoulders when worn with a backpack.

The seams are fully sealed, which helps keep the water out and significantly reduces chafing inside the coat. Better still, there are now shoulder seams, so the Foil X won’t rub your shoulders raw when worn with backpacks.

The only notable drawback is the lack of recycled materials in the Foil X Jacket, at least as far as I can tell. While I understand it’s a professional-grade garment and may not be a bestseller due to its premium price, it would have been encouraging to see an effort toward sustainability. Helly Hansen has noted that many of the technological innovations in the Foil X Jacket will eventually be incorporated into other HH products, so it would have been ideal to see a commitment to environmental responsibility in this design.

As I mentioned in the intro, I have used the Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket pretty much continuously since I received it in June this year. Of course, the weather has been decent on occasions, but there were plenty of rainy days, and on those, I always reached for the Foil X Jacket.

I used the coat for sailing (well, chasing the Patriot with a RIB in Barcelona), mountain biking, shopping, hiking, walking and more. The Foil X performed flawlessly on all of these occasions.

Its soft yet resilient 3-layer design makes it better suited as a coat than most thin and lightweight waterproof shells. This adds to the coat's versatility, as you don’t necessarily need many layers underneath to help you keep warm. I would probably pair the Foil X Jacket with one of the best fleece jackets in cold weather, but if it’s not terribly chilly, one of the best base layers will do.

The lined collar is sublime, not least because it’s somewhat taller, which helps tremendously to keep the draft out of the jacket. The same goes for the adjustable hem and cuffs; it’s super easy to tailor the Foil X Jacket to your body shape to keep water and cold air away from your core.

The jacket is highly waterproof and windproof, yet I found it breathable, too, which is not often the case. Most ultra-waterproof jackets have thicker construction, which makes them less breathable. Although the Foil X Jacket has a 3-layer setup, it somehow perfectly balances waterproofing and breathability. I’ve never felt too toasty or exposed in the coat, that’s for sure.

Who’s the Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket for?

Even though the Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket was designed for performance sailing, it is perfectly suited for any other purpose, from dog walking to hiking, when you need a reliable waterproof jacket. I wouldn’t recommend it for trail running or thru-hiking, though, as the heavier, more insulated nature of the Foil X might hinder those activities.

Should you buy the Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket?

The Foil X Jacket is a premium outdoor garment and is priced accordingly. As such, I’m sure it will be outside of at least some people’s budget. That said, it’s a fantastic waterproof coat made from quality materials that works perfectly for its intended purpose and goes the extra mile. I would highly recommend it to anyone in need of a new waterproof jacket.

The Helly Hansen Foil X Jacket is an exceptional waterproof shell that combines premium materials with thoughtful design, making it ideal for a range of outdoor activities beyond its intended sailing focus. While the jacket's heavier, more insulated build might not be suitable for trail running or backpacking, it excels in providing comfort, protection, and versatility in various conditions. The Foil X justifies the cost with its superior waterproofing, breathability, and windproofing features. If you’re in the market for a durable, high-performance jacket, the Helly Hansen Foil X is a top contender.
