Watch: 47m Admiral superyacht Ethos runs aground in Greece

The 46.6-metre Admiral motor yacht Ethos has run aground in Kefalonia, Greece. She was travelling to the smaller, neighbouring island of Ithaki when the incident occurred.

Footage indicates the yacht may have deliberately run aground to prevent from capsizing in open sea. The video shows her rapidly taking on water and listing on her starboard side. The cause of the incident is unconfirmed but local reports attribute it to water ingress through an open hatch.

Five guests and five crew were also on board but have now been safely evacuated. A salvage attempt is already underway, with authorities attempting to extract water from the vessel to prevent it capsizing.

According to BOATPro , Ethos had been anchored on the northernmost section of the island prior to the incident.

Delivered in 2014 by Admiral, a brand of The Italian Sea Group , Ethos has an exterior designed by Luca Dini . Her interiors were recently refitted by Njord Bergman Design House at Perama Shipyard in Greece.

Refit works included a new "feature wall" for the main saloon, new interior architecture in the owner's cabin and a series of finishes and decor by local Greek artisans.

The extent of damage is unknown. BOAT International will update the story as it develops.

Moment luxury 150ft superyacht with five tourists on board starts sinking off Greek island

Footage shows the moment a superyacht started sinking off a Greek island after a member of the crew left a side door open.

The 150ft megayacht “Ethos” was seen taking in water off the coast of Kefalonia.

Videos showed the vessel off balance in the water.

According to reports, the five tourists on board safely disembarked with the five crew members.

The stunning Italian yacht first set sail in 2014 and can host up to 12 guests and nine crew, costing renters a whopping £180,000-a-week.

Superyacht sinks latest: Investigators reveal where bodies were found as probe looks at 'crew's responsibility'

Italian officials revealed at a news conference there could be "a question of manslaughter" as they opened a shipwreck investigation and said the probe is also looking at the "crew's responsibility".

  • Eyewitness: Sombre scenes greet rescue teams as final body is brought ashore
  • Live reporting by Niamh Lynch

We're ending our live coverage for this evening but here is a recap of what we know:

  • Prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation into the Bayesian sinking;
  • Officials have revealed more details on their investigation and the difficult five-day rescue mission;
  • The six bodies found during the search in recent days were all in cabins on the left-hand - and highest - side of the ship. Five were found in the first cabin and the sixth was found in the third;
  • Prosecutors said the six passengers were most likely asleep when the boat sank;
  • The probe is now focusing on the crew and their responsibilities, with the captain set to undergo more questioning.

Monday 19 August

The Bayesian yacht, flying a British flag, sinks at around 5am local time when the area was hit by a tornado.

Fifteen people are rescued from the 56 metre vessel - including a mother and baby - but another seven remain missing.

One body, later confirmed to be the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, is found near the wreck.

It emerges that British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among six people that remain missing.

Tuesday 20 August

The search continues for the six tourists missing.

It is reported that among those missing are Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Police divers try to reach the hull of the ship, resting at a depth of 50 metres.

Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco say early inspections of the wreck were "unsuccessful" because of limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages.

The operation is later described as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

Tributes pour in for Mr Thomas, with his friend Gareth Williams saying: "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit."

Wednesday 21 August

The search for the six people unaccounted for enters a third day, with crews carrying out inspections of the yacht's internal hull.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrive in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.

A helicopter is drafted in to help with the search effort and remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search.

Five bodies are found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon. Only four of them are brought to shore.

Body bags are seen being taken to Porticello in the afternoon where dozens of emergency services staff wait.

Searches finish for the day just before 7.30pm.

Thursday 22 August

The search resumes for the remaining missing person.

The body of the fifth missing person, found but not recovered the previous day, is brought to shore.

A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returns with a blue body bag to the port of Porticello just after 8.45am local time on Thursday.

Tributes pour in for Mr Lynch and Mr and Mrs Bloomer after they are identified as having died.

The search is called off at around 8pm in Sicily, with divers expected to begin again at 6.30am on Friday.

Friday 23  August

The search continues for the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian, Hannah Lynch.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, says the search for Hannah has not been "easy or quick", comparing the sunken yacht to an "18-storey building full of water".

The coastguard confirms in the late morning that her body has been found.

A green body bag is brought to the port of Porticello from the site of the sinking.

A spokesperson announces on behalf of the Lynch family that they are "devastated" and "in shock" after the deaths of Mike and Hannah.

Hannah's sister Esme pays tribute to her "little angel".

Saturday 24 August

A press conference is held in the court of an Italian town, Termini Imerese.

Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio tells reporters that his office has opened an initial investigation against unknown persons into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.

As the focus now turns to the manslaughter investigation, here's another reminder of the seven victims of the sinking and the 15 people who survived.

A close friend of the Lynch family has added to the chorus of tributes for British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died in Monday's superyacht sinking.

Susannah Gurdun, who lives in Suffolk, recalled being "daunted" when she first met Mr Lynch at a dinner party, before discovering he was "so much more than the corporate cliche".

"He was riveting.  He was funny, and kind, and endlessly interesting; capable of talking about anything and everything," she said.

Ms Gardun said the businessman also had a "thrilling ability" to make complicated subjects "accessible to those of us less blessed with a science acumen".

"In particular, he was wonderful with children.  I will never forget hearing him explain to a group of them - including our ten year old son - the physics of why the sky went pink at sunset," she said.

She went on describe Mr Lynch as a "true genius" and "phenomenal creative".

Ms Gardun said his daughter Hannah was also showing "serious literary promise", and added that it was "beyond tragic that we will never know where her own particular brilliance might have led".

"I still feel blessed to have shared that time with them in Spain.  Not just because I witnessed Mike’s incredible storytelling; but because I was given a chance of understanding what that moment said about all four of them as a united vibrant loving family," she said.

"He was an extraordinary human being and it was - truly - a privilege to have known him."

A yacht crew member who survived the sinking has paid tribute to Hannah Lynch, calling her a "diamond in a sea of stars".

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, has released a statement after divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage, which is believed to be 18-year-old Hannah.

"Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars," she said.

"Bright, beautiful and always shining. What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

"While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

"I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive."

Ms Murray's statement comes as a new image of Hannah Lynch and her father Mike Lynch is released:

Prosecutors announced in this morning's news conference that they have opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation.

Officials were unable to answer several queries from the media, saying they needed time to establish the facts, but what are the key questions facing prosecutors?

Why weren't passengers who remained on board the vessel warned about escaping from the yacht?

The prosecutor in charge of the case, Raffaele Cammarano, suggested that some passengers may have been asleep when others were awake.

Asked why they were not woken up or alerted, he said that is something investigators are trying to work out from the statements of the survivors.

He called it an "essential" part of the inquiry.

Why were several of the passengers in one cabin?

The press conference heard several bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which was not theirs.

Mr Cammarano said investigators currently do not know the reason for them being discovered in the same cabin.

The chief of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht pinned to the right and suggested people tried to go on the other side, taking refuge in cabins in the higher part of the wreck.

Why did the boat sink?

The vessel had been deemed "unsinkable" by its manufacturer - Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

The Bayesian was hit by a downburst, according to Mr Cammarano, which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.

Officials will look into the safety equipment on the sunken vessel.

Mr Cammarano was asked about whether there is a black box and if the hatches were left open.

He said investigators do not have exact information about the black box and that the first phase of the inquiry will look into it.

Why were nearby vessels not similarly affected?

Another yacht, the Sir Robert BP, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian when extreme weather hit.

Its crew helped to rescue 15 people from the stricken vessel.

Italian officials said they would be looking at how the downburst could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels.

What weather warnings was the Bayesian alerted to?

Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, said the weather at the time of the yacht's sinking was abnormal and there was nothing to suggest such an extreme situation would arise.

He said there were forecasts of winds and a storm alert, but there was no warning of a tornado.

"Given that the conditions were such, there wasn't anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising," he said.

"There are vessels that can monitor, after all, these events and one would have thought that the captain had taken precautions."

How long will it take to recover the sailing vessel?

Mr Macauda could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht.

"Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe of the retrieval of the wreck and of course all that has to be submitted to the port authorities and in parallel of course there will be the inquiry results and it's only really then that we will be able to authorise the operation," he said.

"I can't say, like some experts who have already spoken on the subject, [said] that it will be eight weeks."

He made clear that the owners will bear the full cost of retrieval, although he could not estimate the figure.

Italian authorities detailed the challenging and meticulous rescue operation to recover the six missing people from the Bayesian wreck (see 9.18am post).

But why was the five-day search so difficult?

Read more below...

More on this morning's press conference.

One of the main updates from prosecutors was that they have opened manslaughter and shipwreck investigations after the deaths of seven people in the Bayesian sinking.

Watch the announcement below...

Prosecutors have given a lengthy news conference this morning on their investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian.

Read the full report on the prosecutors' probe below...

Marine investigator James Wilkes has been speaking to Sky News after this morning's press conference.

"Naturally, there are more questions than there are substantive answers at the moment - that's the nature of investigative work.

"Something forced that yacht to roll beyond its nominal stability limits, such that it wasn't able to right itself with the ingress of a certain amount of seawater that was coming into the yacht.

"So the investigators are going to ask themselves one initial question - what must the conditions have been for this to happen?

"Then they are going to look at the contributing factors to the yacht, sinking, and, and the unfortunate loss of life."

Prosecutors said this morning that the future of the investigation is reliant on recovering the wreck.

Mr Wilkes said the yacht is a "major piece of physical evidence in and of itself."

"It's lying at 50 metres, which is a recoverable depth.

"If it was significantly deeper, then I'm not sure they'd be considering salvage at this stage or certainly, the salvage question would be a lot more complicated to answer.

"But if there was the ability to raise that yacht in one piece safely, then it gives the investigators physically more to look at."

Mr Wilkes said he was unsure if the yacht would have a "black box" - called a voyage data recorder in shipping.

"It would record things like GPS position, heading speed, engine telemetry, whether the radars were on, what they were recording, alarms, communications from the yacht itself, any audio on the bridge.

"But more often than not, these are on merchant ships. The yacht was a commercial yacht in the sense that it could be chartered out so it's quite possible it has a voyage data recorder on, but I'm not sure that it does. I don't know that as a matter of fact," he said.

Inside the shocking Sicily yacht tragedy that left 7 people dead

There was a violent storm, but even then, luxury yachts are built to weather such events. so why did this boat sink off the coast of sicily, leaving seven people dead, by natalie finn | e news • published august 24, 2024 • updated on august 24, 2024 at 9:34 am.

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

Discover mystical Kefalonia

Just like the other Greek islands, Kefalonia is also surrounded by ancient Greek myths and legends. The first king of Kefalonia, Taphius, is said to have been the son of Poseidon. Many Greek myths associated their rulers with being related to the Greek gods. Taphius' son and Poseidon’s grandson named Pterelaus was made immortal by his grandfather with one golden hair. The only condition to remain immortal was it needed to stay on his head. Losing his golden hair would mean death.

Temperatures can reach 40 degrees and water temperatures can get to 24 degrees, making Kefalonia the perfect destination for a summer sailing vacation. If you want to avoid the tourist crowds, you should travel to the island in September when the weather is still warm, but not too hot.

Sailing season in Kefalonia and the Ionian islands is from May to October, but July and August are the most popular months.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Kefalonia?

The price of your boat rental in Kefalonia can vary depending on the type of boat, the size of the boat, the amount of people joining you, the season and amenities on board. Also, keep in mind that hiring a skipper in addition to your bareboat charter in Kefalonia might come with extra costs, but also with more free time to enjoy your sailing vacation on the Greek islands. But don’t worry! Greece is one of the cheapest sailing destinations in the Mediterranean.

On average, renting a sailboat in Greece costs as little as 50 EUR per person per day. Renting a motorboat in Greece will cost you 190 EUR per person per day on average. A catamaran will be a little cheaper at an average price of 150 EUR per person per day. Rent a gulet in Greece for an average price of 105 EUR per person per day and a RIB for 93 EUR per person per day. As you can see it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune to go on a boat holiday in Greece. And remember: These are average prices, so you might even find cheaper deals - especially when booking your sailing vacation during shoulder season.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Kefalonia?

Depending on the type of sailing holiday you want to experience, you should choose your boat wisely. If you want to explore the beautiful hidden beaches and caves that Kefalonia and the other Ionian islands have to offer, you might regret renting a sailboat later on.

Rent a catamaran in Kefalonia

Pros of renting a catamaran on the Ionian islands

One advantage of renting a catamaran on the Ionian islands is the fact that they come with a shallow draft and not a keel. This makes them the perfect choice for an adventure to discover the most beautiful remote beaches on the island as well as stunning caves like Melissani Cave . Catamarans are great for sailing in shallow waters. This also allows you to anchor closer to the shore than with a sailboat. You won’t have to worry about hitting something that is hidden underwater and get to enjoy a fun day out at a more secluded beach like Kaminia beach which is known to be a nesting spot for the beautiful loggerhead turtles Carretta.

Another advantage of renting a catamaran in this part of the Mediterranean is the fact that they stand on two hulls. This gives the boats a lot of stability and means that it will be less shaky to stay on the boat.

One really amazing thing about catamarans is the fact that they are equipped with a sail AND an engine. This means that you can sail when the wind is blowing and use the engine to move forward when the wind suddenly stops blowing. You are getting the best of both worlds - comfort and adventure!

Catamarans are not available for rent in Kefalonia, but you can rent them this type of boat on another of the Ionian islands and sail over to Kefalonia to get the full experience, for example in Lefkas city: Catamaran rental in Lefkada

Cons of renting a catamaran on the Ionian islands

One of the downsides of renting a catamaran is the fact that they can be bigger in size than other types of water vehicles. This makes it difficult to find a spot for mooring in the marinas - especially during the incredibly busy summer months.

Rent a sailboat in Kefalonia

Pros of renting a sailboat in Kefalonia

One of the advantages of renting a sailboat in Kefalonia is the fact that you don’t need an engine to drive your boat. You can simply use the wind as your natural fuel. And you’re lucky: The Greek islands are generally blessed with ideal sailing conditions. If you just want to relax on your vacation rather than sail yourself or don’t have a boat licence, you can always hire a skipper in addition to your bareboat charter.

Chartering a sailboat also means that you want to enjoy the actual sailing experience rather than chase the most beautiful beach or cave. You get to feel the wind on your skin and will be incredibly content to sail in this part of the Mediterranean. Unlike the Cyclades, which are waters that are a bit more challenging to tackle, the Ionian islands offer ideal wind conditions while being beginner friendly.

One of the most popular AND beautiful sailboats to rent in Kefalonia is Sailboat Ocean Star 51,2 . Up to 18 people fit onto this gorgeous water vehicle, making it the perfect boat to bring all your friends together for a fun summer vacation. Offering both heating and air conditioning means that you can sail in the hot summer months as well as in the winter without having to worry about freezing or melting. Another amenity on the boat is the sundeck which allows you to sunbathe on the boat. Due to the necessary sailing equipment that has to be stored on deck, there is usually not enough space to do so, making something so simple a real luxury.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Kefalonia

One of the downsides of renting a sailboat is the fact that they are solely dependent on the wind. If it suddenly stops blowing, you might find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea. It can be very frustrating. However, you shouldn’t worry about it too much as the wind conditions are generally quite good in this part of the Mediterranean.

Rent a motorboat in Kefalonia

Pros of renting a motorboat in Kefalonia

One of the advantages of renting a sailboat in Kefalonia is the fact that motorboats are generally faster than other types of boats. If you want to see as much as possible from the island and its surrounding, you should go for this type of boat.

Another advantage is the shallow draft of motorboats. This makes them the perfect water vehicle to explore the many hidden beaches and caves around the island. Why don’t you head over to Melissani Cave or Foki Fiskardo beach ?

One of the most popular motorboats to rent in Kefalonia is Motorboat Thunderbird Marine Formula 370ss which offers enough space for up to 10 people. One of the best things about renting this motorboat is the fact that it comes with a captain who is going to sail you to all the amazing destinations around Kefalonia and beyond.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Kefalonia

One of the disadvantages of renting a motorboat in Kefalonia is the fact that fuel is expensive. Especially when you aim to see as much as possible of the island and its surroundings, it can come with a hefty price tag. After all, fuel prices are increasing like crazy and they won’t drop in the foreseeable future.

Motorboat rental in Kefalonia

Charter a luxury yacht in Kefalonia

The Greek islands regularly attract the rich and famous who love sailing on luxury yachts. If you have the funds and want to feel like a celebrity for a week, you should consider chartering a private luxury yacht in Kefalonia for seven days. One of the nicest luxury boats to rent here is the Motorboat Cruisers 440 which is available for pick-up in Argostoli Yacht Marina, Argostólion .

What kind of boat license do you need when renting a boat in Kefalonia?

If you want to rent a small boat with less than 30hp, you don’t need a boat licence to rent it in Greece. If you want to rent a bigger boat in Kefalonia, you need to be in possession of a valid boat licence. Boat licences of EU-residents are automatically valid in Greek waters while boat licence holders of non-EU-countries are not as lucky. Their boat licences need to fulfill the same requirements as Greek boat licences in order to be accepted in Greece. If your boat licence is in another language than English or Greek, you need to ensure that you carry an official translation of your licence in either Greek or English.

If you want to be on the safe side, you should carry the International Certificate of Competency or short ICC .

“I have used Ionianbluesailing on at least four occasions. Great boats and presented in way above the average condition for a charter boat in Greece. Immaculately clean, everything works, well equipped & clearly a lot of effort made to ensure the boat is great condition for your charter. Chris is always available by sms or phone for advice on route, latest weather/wind forecasts etc. Thoroughly recommended – you won’t find better!” (Jeff & family, Bareboat Charter)

“Excellent standard of yacht compared to other companies we’ve used. Chris genuinely cares about both the equipment and his clients. His passion for sailing and knowledge of the area was fantastic. It made our trip effortless and safe. Would highly recommend” (Vicki, John and Tim, Bareboat Charter)

“We’ve had the most amazing week sailing. Your support and knowledge really made a difference and thank you so much for your patience!” (Steve D and family, Bareboat Charter)

Testimonials

A real gem of a find – june 2018.

super yacht in kefalonia

We are frequent charterers and have sailed in the Med for the past 43 year. I have not only chartered but for many years ran the operations of a major charter company. I can safely say that it is not very often that one comes across a charter company as efficient and flexible as Kefalonia Sailing .Spiros and his team were quite outstanding and nothing was too much trouble. Changes of charter dates, plans and island excursions were all handled swiftly and with courtesy. There is a lot to be said for using a company where the owners are hands on - something the mega charter companies lose with size. The boat was in excellent condition for age and we had no problems with her whatsoever. One other big advantage was the far cheaper flights to Argostoli rather than Preveza -amazing difference. We have no hesitation in recommending Spiros and Kefalonia Charters.  --- Bareboat Charter Cyclades 43.4 , June 2018

Sailing the southern Ionian

Spiros provided an excellent charter service. Quick to respond to any questions and everything was very well organised. The yacht was equipped to a very high standard. A technical issue at the start was dealt with quickly and sympathetically. We enjoyed a wonderful week exploring the southern islands along with a few days ashore in Kefalonia which I would highly recommend. Spiros went out of his way to welcome us on arrival and made us feel like valued clients. I have no hesitation in recommending Kefalonia Sailing. --- Bareboat Charter June 2017

One of our best Family Holidays – August 2019

This was our first sailing trip ever and each moment was better than the rest. Spiros was incredibly helpful with any and all questions we had and accommodated every request we had. The beautifully appointed Lagoon 42 was captained by George, an extremely knowledgeable and friendly gentleman. He brought us to the most beautiful places in the Ionian Sea and helped make our holiday one of the most memorable ever. He was fantastic! Thank you, Spiros, for pairing us with the perfect boat and the perfect captain. --- Lagoon 421, August 2019

A great experience

I can’t speak highly enough of Spiros and his attitude and approach. From his first email to the handshake goodbye, Spiros was friendly, efficient, responsive and honest. He found us exactly the type of boat we needed; he was there to meet us at the airport; he and his team were always available on the phone when we had questions; and when we did have a little problem with the anchor, he did all he could to resolve the issue as quickly and painlessly as possible. You always worry when dealing with a company many miles away with something as important as a holiday involving paying for an expensive boat: I can say with confidence that Spiros and his team are entirely trustworthy and won’t let you down. Happy sailing! --- Bareboat Charter September 2017

Kefalonia sailing experience — July 2019

Very good sailing experience. The boat was in good condition and we had no problems. Mr. Nikos is a superb charter professional. He is very helpful and supportive and I can highly recommend him ! --- Sun Odyssey 33i, July 2019

Fantastic Service – October 2017

Wanted a last minute week sailing in October but needed to get a boat from Kefalonia rather than lefkas. Found kefaloniasailing.com. but prices were almost too good to be true so was a little sceptical. From the point of initial enquiry to arranging airport transfer and then meeting us at the boat in person, the service from Spiros was fantastic and I couldn't rate him more highly. We took out a Bavaria 41 which was in great condition. We will definitely charter through Spiros again! Ed (Cheshire, UK) --- Bareboat Bavaria 41, October 2017

Mrs — June 2019

super yacht in kefalonia

We received a well kept clean boat.A helpful crew answered all our questions, gave information and enabled us to have a perfect sailing week. I would gladly recommend this company for a perfect chartering week --- June 2019, Bavaria 51

very friendly and helpful

same as 2019, we came back to Spiros and his team to charter in ionian sea. sun odyssee 33i from 2015, but well maintained and in good conditions great holidays, great service, always friendly and helpful for any request. sure we come back to Spiros!

Echte Empfehlung: prima organisierter Familienurlaub! – Mai 2018

super yacht in kefalonia

Sailing from Kefalonia – August 2018

We had a wonderful one week charter in October sailing from Sami around the Ionian Islands. We chartered San Giorgio, I beautiful 2017 Lagoon 42 which was luxury indeed. We set sale with 2 families on board to explore the Ionian and had the most wonderful holiday visiting beautiful bays with turquoise seas as well as amazing villages like Fiskardo. Spiros was extremely helpful and a pleasure to charter from, always quick to respond to any questions and make sure we had the best possible time, we also had support from the owner which was much appreciated on a couple of technical problems. He recommend Kefalonia Sailing and would definitely use them again. A happy Sailor --- Bareboat charter, Lagoon 42, August 18

Arrival Day

  • Transfer time from the airport to our yacht base in SAMI is about 1 hour. Our yachts are ready for boarding at 3pm on arrival day. Our team will be on the quayside to meet you. After a short briefing about living on board, safety and the local town you’ll be left to relax and sort your things out. You have the option of going to the local beach, a nearby swimming pool or just relaxing on the boat. Everything begins the next morning at about 10am.

Yachts anchored in the Ionian near Fiscardo

Day 1 (12NM):

  • We’re northbound with a short hop up the strait between Kefalonia and Ithaca. It’s the first day on the water and we spend time practising mooring techniques and boat familiarisation.
  • Our destination is Polis Bay , a stunning, secluded bay on the North West corner of Ithaca. After mooring up on long lines, there’s a walk to the nearby taverna and some stunning views of the bay.

Yachts moored on the quay in the Greek harbour

Day 2 (12NM):

  • We continue North and sail up to Sivota on the south-east coast of Lefkas island. Verdant hillsides join seamlessly with rocky coves and sandy bays to create a picture postcard setting. The harbour is beautiful, with a small flotilla of colourful local fishing boats found lining the shore. Shops, tavernas, cafes and mini markets are all close by.

Aerial view of yachts on the quay in Kalamos

Day 3 (16nm):

  • Kalamos is probably our favourite little place in the Ionian. Honestly, time has stood still here. An abundance of bays to anchor in along the way, perfect for snorkelling and exploring. Stern to on the quay if there’s space, if not a long line ashore. Grab a beer and watch the yachts coming in with the brilliant harbour master “George” taking charge!

Small harbor in the Greek Ionian islands

Day 4 (14nm):

  • A really easy day today. A short sail around Kalamos and then head North West, towards the captivating little harbour of Vathi on Meganisi island . Pastel-coloured houses huddle on the clifftop overlooking the deep blue bay below – where you happen to be moored up. Wander around the old harbour and village and discover another world and some brilliant tavernas. Great swimming, great food and quite simply heaven on earth. You’ll never want to leave here.

Busy harbour in Greece

Day 5 (24nm):

  • We head South today, sailing from one Vathi to another: Vathi Ithaca – the home of Odysseus in Greek mythology. Once in Vathi, there is plenty to see with a gorgeous harbourfront area to explore.

Kefalonia island harbour of Sami

Day 6 (18nm):

  • The last leg of our flotilla today as we return back to Sami with a nice easy run past the southern tip of Ithaca. If there is time on route, Antisamos beach is well worth a stop.
  • Check out is by 10am the following morning. Our local team can assist with arranging onward travel.

Qualifications required

What qualifications do i need.

To charter a yacht in Greece as part of a flotilla or independently you will need a qualified skipper on board, and a competent crew member.  The ICC  ( International Certificate of Competence ) is probably the best ticket to have as it is widely recognised by the authorities here on the islands. This, or the  Day Skipper  practical certificates are the minimum required.

Feeling a bit rusty?

Many of our guests sometimes feel their skills aren’t quite ship-shape when they arrive for their yacht charter. There is the opportunity to practise your mooring skills under the guidance of our brilliant flotilla crew (subject to staff availability)

Skipper on Board

If you think you would like some further assistance for your first day of sailing, then an instructor can join you on board for the day and help you ease into the sailing.

Skipper on board is £165 per day (subject to staff availability)

Experience the Sailing… and the food!

You’ll experience some amazing Greek food whilst on a yacht charter, from classic Greek kitchen dishes cooked by local chefs, seasonal salads, mind-blowing tomatoes and freshly grilled sardines, pork chops and club sandwiches – the food in Kefalonia and the other Ionian Islands on a flotilla holiday is delicious and very reasonably priced.

super yacht in kefalonia

When it comes to wine, there are 48 varieties of grape grown locally and some very fine internationally recognised wines to try, along with some fantastic Hellenic beers, there’s plenty to enjoy.

Wander along from your mooring and you’ll be sure to find coffee and fresh pastries for breakfast, plus pop into one of the great little mini-markets to stock up your yacht fridge for some lunchtime treats on anchor somewhere.

Both our yacht bases in Sami and in Lixouri have an excellent selection of mini-markets, bakeries and other shops available for buying provisions at the start of your flotilla week. If you happen to be in Lixouri, be sure to pay a visit to I-Scream Ice cream parlour on the left-hand side of the town square – you won’t be disappointed!

Evening Meals

Part of the joy of Flotilla Sailing is sitting down to a Greek feast at the end of a fantastic day of sailing. For the first evening, we arrange a group meal at a local restaurant  (not included in the holiday price)  and then for the rest of the evenings, the choice is yours.

Whether you’re moored at anchor and rowing to shore to a beachside taverna or simply stepping onto the harbourside, your Flotilla Skipper and 1st Mate will let you know the best options for where to eat. In the busier harbours, there’ll be many fantastic options to choose from. In the quieter locations, it might be just one or two.

For some of our harbour stops, there will be the option of a complimentary mooring for dining in a particular restaurant, but you are still free to eat where you like!

In the local area

Here are some options to check out in the local area:

  • A sunset meal at one of the best beaches in the Greek islands is also a must. Petani beach and taverna “Erasmia“. Only a 15 – 20 minute taxi ride from the club this place is incredible – get there early for a swim and settle down for a wonderful eating experience.
  • Head into town and Lixouri square, 5 – 10 minutes in a taxi from the club (1 taxi for 4 people is ~€10 one way). A wonderful place to watch the world go by with countless cafes, tavernas and bars. Whatever you do, don’t miss the best ice cream in the world at “I-Scream” – it’s divine and we love it!

Getting there

Our yacht base in Sami is quick and easy to get to, with a reasonable flight time of 3hrs from the UK and many regional departure airport options direct to Kefalonia airport. The transfer is approximately 60 minutes.

Thursday changeover day

Transfers are not included but can be easily arranged via our website. Bookings are made with our recommended transfer partner, Kefalonia Taxi Transfers.

On arrival in Kefalonia airport make your way to the arrivals gate exit and your pre-booked taxi will be there ready and waiting for you. It’s a 60 minute transfer to our yacht base in Sami

Moment luxury yacht sinks off coast of Italy caught on camera, with 6 presumed dead

B ritish tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer are presumed dead along with four others who were aboard a luxury superyacht that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday morning, according to a report.

Lynch and Bloomer were among the six people still missing, which include Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Bloomer’s wife Neda, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Judy, Italian coast guard officials said on Tuesday, per the Wall Street Journal.

The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, was moored about a half-mile offshore when a storm rolled in before 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Grainy film from closed-circuit cameras from shore, broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia, showed the illuminated 246-foot mast of the Bayesian weathering the storm and then disappear over the course of a minute.

MORGAN STANLEY INTERNATIONAL CHAIRMAN, WIFE AND 4 OTHERS STILL MISSING AFTER LUXURY YACHT SINKS OFF SICILY

Lynch was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology. He was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp. Lynch, those who helped defend him in the case and their families were celebrating his recent acquittal aboard the yacht.

Christopher Morvillo was one of Lynch’s lawyers, while Jonathan Bloomer testified in Lynch’s defense.

WHO IS MIKE LYNCH, THE BRITISH TECH ENTREPRENEUR MISSING AFTER YACHT SANK?

Ten crew members and 12 passengers, including British, American and Canadian nationals were onboard when the vessel capsized. One man's body was recovered, onboard chef Ricardo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen, and 15 people were rescued, including a 1-year-old girl, authorities said.

The Bayesian was owned by Lynch's wife, who survived the disaster.

Fox News’ Pilar Arias and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

From €140 per day, charter a private yacht in kefalonia with scansail.

Located in the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia is a beautiful Greek island waiting to be explored. This island is the largest within the Ionian archipelago and offers visitors unique culture, landscape, and gastronomy. A private yacht charter is the perfect way to discover its sparkling waters, hidden caves, and lush greenery.

How much does it cost to charter a private yacht in Kefalonia?

There are many factors to consider when calculating the price of a private yacht charter such as the type of boat, the size of the vessel, and the duration of your travels. Here is a list of the average prices according to yacht type:

€3,200 per week in the low season

€4,150 per week in the high season

€3,150 per week throughout the season

€4,200 per week throughout the season

€6,300 per week in the low season

€8,400 per week in the high season

What type of yacht is the best for my charter in Kefalonia?

Deciding what yacht to charter for your boating holiday in Kefalonia is not an easy task. For this reason, Scansail has search filters where you can select boat types, dates, and prices to help narrow down your options. If you are looking for a daily charter with fewer people, you may want to choose a RIB or motorboat as they are easy to navigate and can take you around Kefalonia easily. However, if you are planning on taking a longer journey, we recommend chartering a sailboat or catamaran. These yachts have more cabin space and can go great distances, making them perfect for island hopping!

What is the climate in Kefalonia?

Like other Greek islands, Kefalonia experiences a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Therefore, if you want to experience temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius or more, visit during July and August. However, these summer months also coincide with peak tourist season. Consequently, we recommend visiting Kefalonia in May, June, and September. This allows you to enjoy the warm weather without the crowds.

Should you charter a private yacht with or without a skipper

It is possible to charter a private yacht without a skipper in Kefalonia as long as the boat owner agrees and if you meet the regional requirements to do so. You may be able to rent a smaller vessel such as a RIB without a license, but larger yachts typically require nautical experience. This being said, there are many advantages to having a professional skipper on board with you. For example, they will handle all of the sailing, docking, and anchoring of the yacht so you can just focus on relaxing. For the ultimate luxury experience, you can also opt for having a crew that will cook and clean for you during your journey.

What to do in Kefalonia

The gorgeous Greek island of Kefalonia is filled with numerous activities that can be enjoyed by families and friends alike. We have compiled a list of recommended things to do and enjoy while on your private yacht charter to have unforgettable memories.

Of course, one cannot visit a Greek island without enjoying the beautiful beaches that are offered. If you have taste for the finer things in life, you can head to Makris Gialos Beach. This beach has soft, silky sands and premium sunbeds, ideal for laying out and soaking up the Greek sun. Following this, the most famous beach in Kefalonia is definitely Myrtos. Framed by steep cliffs, this family-friendly beach is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the turquoise waters. Ultimately, the best part of a private yacht charter is that you can go along the coast and see what beaches you like more. Whether you’re interested in hidden coves to snorkel in or lively beaches with plenty of activities, you’re certain to find this in Kefalonia.

The towns scattered across Kefalonia also bring an immense amount of charm to the island. If you head to the northern tip of the island, you will reach Fiskardo, a quaint fishing village known for its Venetian architecture that remains from Venetian rule. This town also has amazing upscale restaurants, luxury yachts, and a lively atmosphere. For a look into more archaeological sites, Sami is a gorgeous coastal town that reflects some of the deep histories of Kefalonia. Once there, you can visit the Melissani Cave, a natural wonder that brings tourists from all over the world. The cave has a lake inside with trees and forests, and a certain magical essence thanks to a big hole at the top that lets the sunlight beam through.

Where to travel nearby Kefalonia

If you want to charter your private yacht for a longer period of time, you should definitely take advantage of Kefalonia’s close proximity to other amazing Greek islands. What better way to explore a country than island hopping? Continue along the Ionian Islands and visit Corfu, Lefkada, and Zakynthos for more beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters. If you have even more time, consider exploring other archipelagos in Greece! Head to the Sporades, the Cyclades, or the Dodecanese for an unforgettable experience.
