X-Yachts X-41 review: from the archive

First of all, the X-Yachts X-41 is not simply a larger X-35.

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

Although they are clearly from the same stable, Niels Jeppesen has given her a deep T-keel for stability.

But the X-Yachts X-41 carries a comparatively lower sail area than her sister.

The reason for this, according to Jeppesen, is that the X-Yachts X-35 was designed specifically to establish a class in the Mediterranean, requiring plenty of sail to cope with light conditions.

Choosing to market her as a one-design has also let X-Yachts fit her with all the toys as standard – carbon spars, wheel and some tidy line handling arrangements.

The deck layout of the X-Yachts X-41 rewards close scrutiny.

There’s an abundance of tweaks to be made, with barber haulers for the head sail and spinnaker sheets and powerful outhaul, cunningham and kicker purchases led to camcleats on both sides of the coach roof.

The mainsheet is led under the side decks to the aft pair of cockpit winches, avoiding any trip or chafe problems for crew sitting out.

A powerful traveller runs the full width of the cockpit within easy reach of the helm or the main trimmer.

Both mainsheet and traveller lines are continuous, the traveller line routed through small blocks clipped to the guard wires to keep it to hand.

Backstay adjustment is through X-Yachts’ patented Magic Wheel, as fitted to the IMX40, IMX45 and most recently the X-35.

This impressive system uses a huge drum below decks to provide most of the purchase, allowing rapid backstay adjustment simply by pulling a lot of line.

It’s tidy and quicker than hydraulics and is routed conveniently through a small tube which emerges just below the centre of the traveller.

The innovations don’t stop there. X-Yachts have fitted Harken’s dual diameter Quattro winches to the coachroof, which allow fast sheeting of the spinnaker sheets via the large diameter drum or a lower gear by simply shifting the line up to the main drum and self-tailer.

The big carbon wheel was comfy to use from either side of the cockpit and offered a good view forward.

Lifting the GRP cover below the helmsman’s feet reveals another clever detail – the quadrant is immediately abaft the helm and as close to the centre of the wheel as possible, allowing short cables to be used and eliminating slack.

All good in theory, but does it work on the water? In a word, yes.

The X-Yachts X-41 is a thoroughbred racer which is already showing her class – the team won the first race of the Warsash Spring Series by 15 minutes on corrected time.

We sailed the boat twice; once for the second race of the series, then later for a detailed test.

On the first occasion, the wind ranged from 30-38 knots, giving us a fast run to the course and race organisers the jitters.

A stiff performer

They cancelled the race, but skipper Jochem Visser suggested we should go for a sail anyway.

It was a bumpy ride upwind under reefed main and jib, conditions that the hull’s steel reinforcement, which picks up rig and keel load, is designed to counteract.

Turning for the spinnaker run, we drove the boat hard, surfing down waves to reach speeds up to 15 knots.

The 12 crew were necessary to sail and balance the boat in these conditions and proved that the large cockpit could work well when fully crewed.

The second session couldn’t have been more different – bright sunshine and light winds averaging six knots.

The crew of 12 were essential for spinnaker work and helpful weight on the wind.

Sailing upwind and sacrificing a little height for power, the X-Yachts X-41 turned in a more than respectable five to six knots, often matching or exceeding the true wind speed.

She responded well to crew placement, delivering much better helm balance with plenty of weight to leeward.

The big carbon wheel was comfy to use from either side of the cockpit and offered a good view forward, and there were plenty of brace points for the helmsman whatever the steering position.

Helming was finger-light yet positive – the boat responded well to small corrections and the steering system showed no slack.

Even in these light airs, feedback was good and she proved easy to keep in the groove.

Upwind in 30 knots: the X-41 proved a good all-rounder.

Tacking is fast and straightforward thanks to the non-overlapping rig.

Bearing away and hoisting a symmetric spinnaker, we nudged seven knots, reaching as the wind filled in slightly. Again, she proved positive to handle, rewarding puffs of wind with good acceleration.

Under engine the 41 performed well, cruising at over eight knots and reaching just over nine knots flat out.

As can be expected from her narrow keel. the turning circle was tight – 1.25 boat lengths – and performance astern was secure and positive.

Although primarily a racing boat, the X-Yachts X-41 still offers a few cruiser comforts.

The cockpit is a good width for bracing and deep enough to feel secure, and has two good lockers for fenders and lines plus a large lazarette accessed through the floor behind the helm.

The racing foil on the headstay can be replaced with roller-reefing gear with the drum mounted below deck. But the really neat concession to cruising is the anchor box.

X-Yachts’ system lets you fit an anchor well and windlass which can be entirely removed when racing, using a fully sealed hatch to prevent water ingress. It’s not a quick job, admittedly, but impressive nonetheless.

Light and welcoming

The interior layout is similar to that of the X-35, but the extra length has allowed a few welcome changes, notably a larger galley, forward-facing nav station and doors and lockers for the aft cabins.

Yet the first impression below is of simplicity – there’s a light, welcoming feel thanks to teak being restricted to necessary joiner work, a generous use of white and lots of opening lights and hatches.

Starting at the bow, there’s a zippered, mesh panel which opens into an empty bow cavity suitable for sail stowage, but would be filled with the anchor box when cruising.

The forecabin has a conventional triangular berth, its split mattress easily moved to allow access beneath the berth.

The hatches which offer access to this stowage space are too narrow to accept anything but the smallest sails, but provide plenty of stowage for other objects.

Other stowage is provided by a large locker with hanging and shelving space. Both aft cabins feature a similar locker.

X-Yachts-X-41-review-heads-credit- X-Yachts

The heads and shower are basic, but practical.

Forward and accessed through the saloon, the heads is large enough for showering and has a large locker behind the usual mirrored doors the space below the sink is left open.

The saloon has two long settees either side of a drop-leaf table.

As on the X-35, the seat backs hinge upwards, giving access to the full width of the cushions when sleeping.

It’s a shame no extra cushion is provided, so that the hinged section can double as an upper berth.

That said, because the boat is able to sleep ten, few people are likely to find this restricting.

X-Yachts-X-41-review-saloon-credit- X-Yachts

Plenty of white makes a bright interior.

The settee cushions and their plywood bases also hinge up to allow access to the water tank to port and diesel tank to starboard, plus limited stowage. Grab handles below the portlights run throughout the saloon.

A large nav station is at the foot of the companionway, with plenty of space for paper and electronic navigation.

Stowage is in a stack of four drawers in the pedestal and there’s even a handy pen box under a flap in the chart table top.

Opposite, the galley is large enough for standard cooking and has good stowage above the stove.

However, less successful is the stack of four drawers adjacent to the stove – with an inside width of only 9cm, you have to wonder how useful they will be.

The simple aft cabins have a large locker each and berths that are mounted low in the boat, with little space beneath.

A pipecot is also fitted should you need to squeeze three people into each cabin.

The engine box, which protrudes into both cabins, can be readily removed, as can the companionway steps, to provide superb all-round engine access.

For sheer adrenalin, the X-Yachts X-41 takes the honours. She’s fast and fun, and rewards careful trim and handling with clear returns of speed.

The big rig, deep draught and high sail area/displacement creates a stiff, responsive yacht that can put a smile on your face and some results on the board.

My guess is that X-Yachts X-41’s will spend most of their time in racing mode.

That said, just as many a sports car driver has never been near a track, several owners of the 40 or so boats already pre-sold admitted that they never plan to race at all.

Terrifying moment 300ft superyacht crashes into smaller boat leaving passengers screaming

Terrifying moment 300ft superyacht crashes into smaller boat leaving passengers screaming

It might be 'rich people problems' but it's still really scary.

Jess Battison

A pretty unnerving video shows the terrifying moment a 300ft superyacht crashed into a smaller boat, leaving its passengers screaming.

I mean imagine, you’re just minding your business, chilling on your little yacht on holiday (like I said, use your imagination) when an absolute monster of a boat comes straight at you.

A monster a whole three times bigger that is. The 90.1-meter Llurssen superyacht ‘Ice’ was cruising along off the coast of holiday hotspot Yalıkavak in Bodrum, Turkey , at the end of August when it crashed.

And dramatic viral videos show it seemingly going into 31.08-meter Numarine yacht ‘A.Mey’ at full speed.

The superyacht can be seen coming straight at it. (TikTok/@muratgunesresmi)

Reportedly worth a whopping £84million , Ice went directly into the path of the smaller yacht.

The crash can be audibly heard as eyewitnesses watched on from dry land and the A.Mey ended up in chaos as the superyacht continued to seemingly push it along the water.

FIRST PHOTO OF TITAN SUB FOLLOWING IMPLOSION RELEASED

VICTIMS 'SUFFOCATED TO DEATH' IN £33M YACHT DISASTER

Superyacht Times reports that the extendable platforms at the stern of Ice may have been open. And this suggests that the whopper vessel might have been experiencing a technical or mechanical failure resulting in this scary collision.

Sources told the outlet that A.Mey was having to undergo repair work as the upper deck was ‘completely torn off’. A little unsurprisingly to those who have seen the terrifying moment, the vessel has apparently suffered ‘serious damage’.

In various viral videos the smaller boat is shown getting dragged a short distance by the front of Ice before being crazily spun around the port side of the superyacht.

And one video shared to TikTok in particular taken from onboard the A.Mey shows the sheer panic of the collision.

The Ice towers over as it gets closer and closer, ramming right into the littler boat and causing passengers to scream, shout and fall in the quake.

While many TikTok users slammed the incident as ‘rich people problems’, plenty agreed the ‘big boat is completely at fault’.

Others wrote: “Holy moly that was a huge boat that hit u guys hope everyone is ok.”

Many couldn’t understand how this could possibly have happened, which makes it likely people’s theory the A.Mey was anchored, while the Ice had a technical problem is true.

It doesn’t seem anyone has been reported as injured following this incident, but it’s clear the boat must be at least a little f**ked.

“ We particularly wanted to sail one of the new X yachts Pure range and so chose X-Yachting. We had a great week's sail, feeling secure in the X yacht despite the Meltemi blowing, and it was also good to have the charter team at the end of the phone / whatsapp to answer questions / advise on routes etc' ” Nick, UK Charter
“ The third time we have chartered from X Yachting, and the second time we have chartered “Ariadne”, an XC45. A pleasure to sail, she is the ideal yacht for that little extra bit of comfort and stability. Professionally prepared by the team in advance we look forward to sailing on her again in the future! Thank you again X Yachting for a wonderful family holiday! Your warm hospitality, and professional attitude continues to impress us! ” Stefan, UK Charter

“ A perfectly maintained boat. The best we ever were able to charter! The closest experience to owning an X is: to charter it here ! ” Andy and the NorXL crew, Switzerland Charter
“ We chartered the X49 for a late September sail. Moderate temperatures, uncrowded marinas and towns. Impeccably clean and comfortable 50’ yacht Sails, lines, winches, navigation systems all in perfect condition. Our skipper George was very knowledgeable piloting our boat, and worked with us on plotting a fun itinerary. Gave us great suggestions on places to visit on different islands, We will be back! ” David, USA Charter
“ We had a fantastic time - on top of that your team makes the experience seamless from a to z, a real joy being your client! ” Cornelis, Germany Charter
“ We spent the summer 2022 island hopping in the Greek islands and had our x-yacht based at the Olympic Marine where there was an x-yacht agent, but did not know what to expect . After meeting Jason and his team and providing them with a long snag list of works to be done on the boat , we never looked back . The team took full ownership, resolved all snags in no time , with such professional flair and friendly approach . We were so impressed that we returned there the following year , contrary to our original plans . If you are planning for a problem free holiday on your boat in Greece , the Olympic Marine in Athens is the place you can call home , having your boat in perfect hands with Jason and his amazing team there. ” Chris, Malta
“ From the initial point of contact with X Yachting I can testify that the level of service offered was of the highest quality, from booking the charter, to arrival, to stepping off the yacht at end of the charter the very highest standards were offered in a friendly and cordial way by everyone in the X Yachting team ” Stefan, Cyprus 'Ghost skipper' Charter
“ The cruise was amazing, the boat is incredible and Taki the skipper the best we could ask. I will consider fors sure to have another experience like this one next year ” Filippo, Italy Skippered Charter
“ Absolutely great! ” Kevin, Denmark Bareboat One-way Charter
“ We had a super week as a family with two young boys on a brand new 4-6 with a fantastic skipper. All organization went very smooth from airport transfer, jumping on the boat and finding nice spots to anchor. Can't wait to come back again! ” Bas, Netherlands Skippered Charter
“ I wanted to thank all the team for the warm welcome and very professional way our cruising has been prepared and managed. All the crew have spent a fantastic week on this outstanding X 4.6 The boat is really impressive, a true X, fast, well balanced, easy to handle, and very comfortable (far more than my old 412!) Some metrics of our cruise, around 230 Nm, 37 litres of diesel, 300 liters of water, max speed 15+ kn surfing downwind in 25/33 kn of Meltemi (one reef main and jib) between Macronisi and Kea the first day. Hope to come back ! ” Patrick, France Charter

Mit Horst Janson, Gerit Kling, Sigmar Solbach, Daniela Ziegler, Sanne Schnapp u.a. | Buch: Knut Boeser | Regie: Gero Erhardt

Superior Sailing Pleasure

The X5 6 is a fifty-six-foot performance cruising yacht, designed with serious cruising in mind; it could be crossing the Atlantic, or exploring beautiful Mediterranean islands. The X5 6 joins the hugely successful and critically acclaimed Pure X Range and is now the largest yacht in the range.

The design philosophy was very clear from the outset - like all our luxury yachts, we place a huge emphasis on giving the owner a superb and comfortable sailing experience, on a yacht that is easy to handle by all the crew.

The first X5 6 were launched in November 2020 and we celebrated her world premiere in January 2021 in Haderslev, Denmark.

X-Yachts has developed an online web-configurator for each of the Pure X models, enabling you to design your own version of the sailing yacht. Configure your own dreams.

Light, strong and stiff

With the introduction of the X-65 in 2007, X-Yachts started to infuse hulls for performance yachts utilising epoxy resin. Epoxy infusion construction offers fantastic control over the laminate allowing it to be optimised to maximise strength and stiffness, whilst saving weight.

In the X5 6 all weight saved, is used to increase the yacht’s stability, enabling the crew to have a more relaxed time and to feel safer and more comfortable. The fact, that the hull is cured, baked at high temperatures for almost 24 hours, not only optimises the hull material properties, but also minimises the risk of the darker coloured hull surfaces to suddenly start posturing, losing the surface finish.

With over 10 years of experience building epoxy infused yachts, X-Yachts took the decision in 2018 to build all models using this technology, one of the only yacht builders to do so.

Interior craftmanship

Danish design and architecture is famous for its clean, timeless style. The X5 6 is a showcase of luxury interior design; the yacht has a great sense of light and space, whilst maintaining practicality and functionality, with a design that works out on the open seas as well as moored in a harbour.

The flush deck hatches and coachroof side windows allows a lot of light into the boat and offers great ventilation. Large hull windows offers fantastic views from the spacious saloon.

High quality materials

The X5 6 is offered in a range of finishes: Nordic Oak veneer is standard on all furniture, or optional teak can be chosen.

All veneers are hand-selected in Italy by our specialists, from one of the most exclusive suppliers for the marine market for high quality yachts.

When combined with the top-quality craftsmanship X-Yachts is famous for, this translates to affordable luxury. As with all models in the range, there are a large number of options for soft furnishings;

The standard mast is an aluminium 3 spreader mast with discontinued rod rigging and racing turnbuckles. Option is a carbon mast, and a Furler Boom with carbon mandrel.

It could be argued that the sailplan for any yacht is one of its most important features. From the inception of the Pure X Range, flexibility has been key. X-Yachts took the best from our performance and cruising ranges, which is why you’ll find the X5 6 can be specced with a self-tacking jib for ease of handling when short handed and longitudinal genoa tracks to maximise sailing performance - the choice is yours.

The X5 6 has a large moulded bowsprit as standard allowing asymmetric spinnakers to be flown from the front and has space for a Code-0 furler in front of the main forestay, the innovative new shape of the bow allows both the furlers to be pushed further forward maximising the J measurement to improve upwind performance.
