Santana 20 class, today was a good day..

Today was a good day. Who would have expected a perfect evening of racing practice on Monday. For the last three weeks, I have been attending Kerry Poe’s sailing seminar on sail trim. And tonight set the perfect venue to test or observe what he talked about. I had a well seasoned crew of very technical sailors and just being on that boat trying to contribute was special for me. If you can sail past sunset because you can appreciate what life gives you, you’ll know what I mean.

But for now, admiring the fading outline of Mt. Hood towards the east, the wind rushes off your face on the starboard side. The sun sets and we are going for another run. It’s a spiritual journey.

That’s how I started my week.

Visit to a Sail Maker

My first impression of a loft was that I always envisioned it to be near water, preferably near a marina. Not where the loft was among the food venues on Alberta District. Not for Dale Waagmeester. Go ahead, say it. That’s definitely a sail maker’s name right? I don’t know. The very shape of his last name makes me think of a long viking ship. And if you met him in person, this man is definitely a man designed for a craftsman’s work. His passion is in design. His art is in sail making. On this Saturday, Dale was very nice to invite a group of about 25 for an intimate tour of his work shop. Factory floor, canvas materials, Singer sawing machines, yarn, samples, and materials everywhere. When I first walked in I saw two large sails on the factory floor. I drooled over how crisp and beautiful they were. How the heck do you fold these sails, I wondered. They were so ….. well….. new! At any rate, after a few impromtus, our host gathered us round for a demonstration of how he designs sails. Queries on manufacturing, production and sail design were asked by the attendees. We were treated to a live-demo of how he cuts sails and the workmanship of the sail is clearly evident in the final product. Those two new sails on the floor were just incredibly well constructed. I may have not sailed for a long time, but I am a fan of quality.

The Santana 20, A Rich Sailing History

Source: http://www.wdschock.com/santana-20-62

Schock continues its more than fifty years of tradition building quality, family oriented performance sailboats. Consider the new Santana 20, the definitive small keel boat beautifully packaged as a one-design racer.

“Affordable, easily trailered and very fun to sail,” described the S-20 when we introduced it in 1976. The description still applies, but today’s Santana 20 is better than ever!

A new deck features rounded cockpit seats and foot braces for the skipper and crew. Schock uses Harken hardware to accomplish the most complete and efficient deck layout of any race boat. A strong, growing, and friendly class association with established fleets around the country promotes and preserves the class through seminars, regattas, and social events.

Take advantage of the years of experience in one-design sailing built and promoted by the W.D. Schock Corporation by joining in the fun. Whether cruising with family and friends, handicap racing, or class racing, the Santana 20 cannot be matched as an affordable, easily trailered and fun to sail 20 foot boat.

A Letter to our Readers

Dear Friends,

This blog is being created to inspire community through the sport of sailing.

On the Columbia River, the largest river in the Pacific Northwest region of North America, sailboat racing is fairly organized. It is in this body of water that Fleet #10 from Portland calls home.

Today, the fleet is developing its emergence back to the Santana 20 Class Association, that has local, regional and national racing events throughout the year in sailing waterways across the United States.

And although the focus of this blog will be to highlight Santana 20 Class Association racing,  this site will also provide how the Fleet is engaging with the community in terms of promoting the sport.

As Editor, it is my hope that I can convey the spirit of competition with articles that help sailors become better. Ultimately, it’s about how we can use sailing as a way to interact with the community: through education, engagement and enrichment.

Respectfully yours,

Carlo Narciso / OIC, Fleet #10
